Re: [Elecraft] Could this operate on a motorcycle?
A KX3 or any of the K line is not suitable for use on a vehicle that requires so much concentration, coordination and attention to all aspects of its operation. Especially a road bike where all of the fore mentioned is of upmost importance for safety and staying uninjured and alive. As others have pointed out, a much more appropriate communication device would be either a handle bar mounted, or even a belt mounted hand held transceiver, for either 2 meters or 440 MHz, or one with a dual band capability. They operate in the FM mode, thus are more immune to man made noise and ignition noise interference. Once set to a desired (mutual with all operators) channel, they don't require further rider attention, other than maybe an occasional adjustment of the audio volume. They can be used with helmet mounted hearing pieces and microphones. A conveniently located, handle bar mounted, Push To Talk (PTT) switch coupled with a low profile(19) quarter wave whip, mounted on the rear of the bike, will be required. Depending on the terrain, the bike to bike range, can be as much as 15 miles, more than enough for the leader to be alerted to a problem by the tail gunner. I'm a long time dirt bike, dual sport, quad and side x side rider and have organized and participated in many group rides and events. We have often used similar equipment for event control. In fact I have a permanently mounted, mobile, dual band (2M/440 MHz) transceiver in my competitive grade Polaris RZR side x side. [Elecraft] [KX3] SOTA Spotting with KX3
Is there anyway to use the KX3 running barefoot to SOTA spot? In a number of recent SOTA activations cellular spotting has proved impossible and thus I'm unable to send in a SOTA spot. This makes activation difficult, particularly when band conditions are poor. I could by an APRS enabled handheld but it's a pretty costly option to provide another potential spotting solution. Thus, I was wondering whether is possible to spot using one the the KX3 digital modes and perhaps something stored in memory. 73's Gary __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Issues with KPA100 (K2/10 is 100% OK)
Hi, my K2 works well but I have issues with my KPA100. KPA100 and KAT100 are both situated in an external enclosure but the KAT100 is permanently disabled (cal-mode). I used the KPA100 to drive my tube-amplifier ... I cannot exactly say what happend but for a year or so the maximum output power on all bands has been only 60W. It's enough for the tube-pa but now the output is zero. If I change the band or hit the antenna-switch the relays are working. So the communication seems to be OK. While pressing tune the K2 says high current and there is absolutely no output-power an the K2 and of course at the KPA100. (The K2 without any connections to the second enclosure works pretty well!!!). So the first guess was to check the diodes D16 and D17. I did not desolder them but I made some measurements with mit Fluke 177. D16: Diode-Voltage zero and the other direction shows 0.390 V. The resistor-values are 95.7 KOhms and 104,6 KOhms D17: Diode-Voltage zero and the other direction shows 0.387 V. The resistor-values are 95.5 KOhms and 105,2 KOhms Not so bad I think but what might be the problem? Any hints? Re: [Elecraft] Issues with KPA100 (K2/10 is 100% OK)
Holger, Those resistance values indicate that D16 and D17 in the KPA100 are faulty. The resistance in the forward direction should normally be much lower. You can check to see if your ohmmeter is reading properly by measuring a new or known good small signal diode. I believe if you check the power output with an external wattmeter and connected to a dummy load, you will find a higher than normal power even though the K2 display and LED Bargraph indicate no power. Re: [Elecraft] Limit topics in email
It is customary on this list to begin your subject with the model of Elecraft product(s) you are writing about. Many but not everyone does that. Most email clients provide for filters that allow you to identify messages by the subject, who they are from, and words in the body, and then take some action with the message. I use Thunderbird and have a number of filters set up. For example, I sold my Buddipole and couldn't figure out how to unsubscribe from the BP group so I have a filter that sends everything from that group to the trash. You could do something like: if subject does not contain KX3 then send to trash. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2014 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 2014 - www.cqp.org On 5/5/2014 11:40 AM, HREFAB wrote: Is there a way to limit the posts that are sent to my email address to a specific subject? But I checked the voltages at the diodes especially D11, D12, D13 and D14 in receive-mode: D12 and D14 have the right voltages at the anodes and cathodes when I switch from low-power to high-power and vice-versa. But the voltages at D11 and D13 are wrong. The voltages at the anodes and cathodes are always 13,8V. There are no voltages about ~140V. Re: [Elecraft] Issues with KPA100 (K2/10 is 100% OK)
Holger, That indicates that D11 is shorted. I would replace D11, D12 and D14 and remeasure. Do not substitute - use only 1N4007s. While those are normally power diodes, they work well for switching purposes too, and that is not true of most other diode types. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/5/2014 4:05 PM, dl9...@dl9hda.de wrote: Dear Don, thank you very much for your answer. Re: [Elecraft] Issues with KPA100 (K2/10 is 100% OK)
Holger, I didn't think of it before the last response, but be certain you are using the correct Diode Voltage chart. If you have a newer KPA100 or one that has been upgraded - with blue toroid cores at RFC1 and L15, then you must use the newer voltage chart (download the most recent KPA100 manual). With the newer design, the only place you will find a high voltage is at the cathodes of D12 and D14. OTOH, if you had red toroid cores at L15 and L16, you have the older KPA100 and the Diode Voltages in your manual should be correct. 73, Don W3FPR On 5/5/2014 4:05 PM, dl9...@dl9hda.de wrote: Dear Don, thank you very much for your answer. Re: [Elecraft] Possible bad KREF or K144XV Ref Lock or ???
Hi Victor, Thanks for the update - most interesting. I am using the K144XV in conjunction with the REFLock and found that the crystal and its grounding was the problem. May I suggest that you experiment with earthing the crystal can as suggested by Elecraft and / or changing out the crystal. As far as small RF relays are concerned I use the Teledyne TO5 can type 732 that will fit easily in the enclosure and have reasonable isolation across the contacts. I have not found any problems using MMICs and will continue to use them. In fact I use a PGA103 in my masthead preamp without a problem. Hope the above is of some help. 73 Peter G3SMT On 04/05/2014 09:28, Vic Goncharsky via Elecraft wrote: Hi Harry, Hope the info that follows will be useful. I have made some research of how to make the internal K144XV Elecraft transverter be useful in contests. Originally it was almost useless due to many parasitics all across the band even from S9 signals. The stronger – the worse and there were a lot of them even here in KN29AU. So in July, last year, during IARU R1 3-rd subregional VHF contest, the band was full of clones. HI HI. Comparying the schematics of both internal and external Elecraft 144 transverters shows three major differences that could have caused the different dynamic performance of the internal one. Firstly - the usage of three diode switching components in the Front-End chain up to the ADEX mixer. Secondly - usage of MMIC instead of BFR96 in the LO amplifier stage. Thirdly - the K144XV PHASE LOCK BOARD Here are some findings and possible solutions. 1.Remove (do NOT install) the K144XV PHASE LOCK BOARD! In this case transverter is using just its own Xtal generator and spirious signals caused, possibly, by leakage from the synthesizer are gone. 2. Bypass the input diode T/R input switch by using separate receiving path. Remove the shorting block from pin1-2 of the P3 connector and connect separate coax to pin2 – RF, pin3 – ground. This requires adding some front-end filtering and RF relays in PA, LNA or wherever you like. (I would have prefer to get rid of all diode switching in RX RF path but have no idea of RF relays small enough to fit into K144XV box). I have tested this setup in September during IARU R1 VHF championship and compared to July's event it looked like day and night. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Limit topics in email
This is the answer. Of course it requires that people correctly fill in the subject line. More and more people are having trouble with that or just don't care. On 5/5/2014 3:02 PM, Fred Jensen wrote: It is customary on this list to begin your subject with the model of Elecraft product(s) you are writing about. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Macro programming question?
Hi Glenn, I did something else for that purpose; I created a small pigs tail with a two pin female connector and a 6.3 mm female stereo connector at the other end for my straight key and plug the paddle in the key connector at the left side. In the setup I set the side connector to normal iambic and the front connector to HAND so I can use both without any switching at all. The rightmost 2 vertically oriented pins in the hole that is used to connect the portable paddle, are to be used in that case. The small connector was salvaged from some junk-box-PCB and sealed with shrink-tube. If you like I can send you a picture of what I made. 73, Peter Op 2014-05-05 22:25 schreef WA7SPY: elecraft@mailman.qth.net I would like to use my PF1 and PF2 buttons on my KX3 to do the following: PF1 change CW Key 1 from tip dot to HAND PF2 change CW Key 1 from HAND back to tip dot. [Elecraft] Shack rebuild
Looks great, Dave, and the running narrative on your website is helpful. Inspires me to do the same. A question for anyone who might have suggestions about the furniture part of a ham shack: I am pretty much restricted to a tabletop 60 inches by 24 inches, with a rolling file cabinet underneath, which isn¹t much space as the collection grows. I need to build a second deck, something like a hutch that sits on the desk, has room for the K-line underneath and a shelf where all the other stuff can go. My somewhat casual Internet research hasn¹t turned up anything useful. I may have to bite the bullet and hire a cabinetmaker (years ago I bought a power saw and immediately cut through its own cord, so I don¹t do woodworking or other dangerous sports), but thought I¹d ask if anyone knows a source for high-quality items that might be adapted to the purpose. Depending on the terrain, the bike to bike range, can be as much as 15

Re: [Elecraft] OT Shack rebuild
Try the shelving kits in the Big Box stores. I got mine at Target, they're about a foot deep, and have two shelves [one in the middle and one on top] separated by just under 5 inches. For the radio, the KPA500 goes underneath on the desk because of the weight, K3 above it, KAT500 on top, and P3 on top of KAT500. My FT-847 is also on top next to the KAT500. The other set are on the back of what I use for a work bench. They're made from particle board with wood-grain plastic covering. I cut a couple of small boards exactly the height of the spaces between the shelves and just put them in at the back to keep the weight from bending the shelves. KPA500 and K3 have about 1 1/2 of clearance above them. I'll send you a photo if you want. A LOT cheaper than having something custom made. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2014 Cal QSO Party 4-5 Oct 2014 - www.cqp.org On 5/5/2014 3:52 PM, Dauer, Edward wrote: A question for anyone who might have suggestions about the furniture part of a ham shack: I am pretty much restricted to a tabletop 60 inches by 24 inches, with a rolling file cabinet underneath, which isn¹t much space as the collection grows. That way the bike battery never ran down. I was never lonely on the road with the radios. The Iron Butt rides get lonely! I miss the fellows in the MARC club. They were dedicated riding and ham fanatics! Just writing this note makes me want to put the antennas back on and get out on the road. I always feared the 100 watts would interfere with the BMW engine/brake computers, but it never did. -- Pete / ??? / W6LAW 323 460-7018Hollywood home 323 461-7018Pete cell -- Message: 23 Date: Sun, 04 May 2014 23:33:13 -0700 From: Chuck Smallhouse w...@theriver.com To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Could this operate on a motorcycle? Especially a road bike where all of the fore mentioned is of upmost importance for safety and staying uninjured and alive. As others have pointed out, a much more appropriate communication device would be either a handle bar mounted, or even a belt mounted hand held transceiver, for either 2 meters or 440 MHz, or one with a dual band capability. They operate in the FM mode, thus are more immune to man made noise and ignition noise interference. Once set to a desired (mutual with all operators) channel, they don't require further rider attention, other than maybe an occasional adjustment of the audio volume. They can be used with helmet mounted

Where did you see about Elecraft suggesting earthing the crystal can? That is interesting From: Peter Torry peter.to...@talktalk.net To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, May 5, 2014 4:49 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Possible bad KREF or K144XV Ref Lock or ??? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to hlyin...@yahoo.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Also, reinforce them if at all possible... Think having them sit for 3 or 4 years with weight on them... They WILL sag. I add a 2X4 to every one of them I get. You might look for SUV passenger video LCDs. High-enders use these to keep the harmonics passivated. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 - how can I measure the kx3 pa temp while connected to the KXPA100 ?
Hi Jeff I use the KX3 OSC*##C to monitor the temperature of the KX3 and the PAx ##C to monitor the temperature of the KXPA100. That worked for me while I was running PSK31 and RTTY as W1AW/0 for North Dakota. I have ordered the extra heat sink for my KX3 as I think it runs too hot in RTTY and PSK31 but it is just fine on CW and SSB. I hope this idea works for you. 73 Ken W0CZ w0cz at i29 dot net Sent from my iPad On May 5, 2014, at 7:10 PM, Jeff Herr her...@comcast.net wrote: how can I measure the kx3 pa temp while connected to the KXPA100 ?
