[Elecraft] K60 XV key line
Hi I have installed the K60XV into my K2 #3666. I wish to key a KXPA100, using the J2 connector key line. Will the circuit handle this? Or any better idea to implement amp keying? Re: [Elecraft] K60 XV key line
Chris, Yes, that keyline will handle the voltage and current of the KXPA100 Keyin line with no problem. The 2N7000 will handle up to 60 volts and 200 ma. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/23/2014 5:24 AM, Chris Meagher wrote: Hi I have installed the K60XV into my K2 #3666. [Elecraft] RM-11708 proposal to FCC threatens CW and digital modes
Perhaps others like me are unaware of this proposed FCC rule that would allow digital communication modes 2.8 kHz in width to be used robotically in the CW and data sub-bands without regard to interference. ARRL supports this and evidently initiated it. http://www.arrl.org/files/media/News/RM-11708%20Briefing%20Memo.pdf However, information on websites savecw.com and saveRTTY.com indicates it would cause grave interference with CW and narrow digital modes. There is evidently a short window of opportunity to submit comments to the FCC about this, and there are instructions on the noted websites for how to do this online within just a few minutes. If you google for RM-11708 you can read some well-reasoned comments submitted by other hams to the FCC electronic docket. I can't evaluate the claims being made about ARRL's motivation but it seems important not to allow such bad interference, so I submitted a comment. Re: [Elecraft] RM-11708 proposal to FCC threatens CW and digital modes
Hello, I bought a KX3 to induce me to learn the code and operate portable. Randal Evans, who is not a ham, wants RM-11708 approved, so he can use the ham-bands to download movies. Imagine that happening where I want to operate CW and PSK31. Here is Evans' message to the FCC sent in last week: 7521315143.txt To: FCC - RM-11708 The sailing forms are all engouraging us to file comments in support of RM-11708. This is my first filing and if I mess this up, please see SailNet Forum at: http://www.sailnet.com/forums/general-discussion-sailing-related/111746-us-c itizensurged-support-fcc-rm-11708-a.html I have experienced very dependable service from the amateur radio Internet Winlink system. Its a great service because all of the other available Internet services cost money. Even when I am topside crusing the system runs automatically below deck publishing my position reports and downloading my email. I use the system for sending position reports, ordering supplies, repairs, chatting with friends and posting to facebook. My only complaint is that it needs to be much faster. I am not a amateur radio operator yet but a friend lets me use his call with a SIDD on the end. I hope to get my own ham call soon. From what I read on the sailing forums, RM-11708 will allow Winlink eMail to run twice as fast. That is great and I am for that. Some of the technical folks are saying that if RM-11708 is published with no bandwidth we can get even faster Internet and might be able to stream movies on the Winlink Internet. I'm for passing RM-11708 into law with no bandwdith limits. I sent to the FCC my notice that I don't want RM-11708. I don't want the ham-bands used for email and movies when commercial services can do that. 73 Jerry KM3K -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of jsdroys...@nc.rr.com Sent: Monday, June 23, 2014 9:14 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] RM-11708 proposal to FCC threatens CW and digital modes Perhaps others like me are unaware of this proposed FCC rule that would allow digital communication modes 2.8 kHz in width to be used robotically in the CW and data sub-bands without regard to interference. think my comments on RM-11708 went thru. This is very serious to ANYONE who wants to retain narrow band digital communications like JT9 and PSK31 and RTTY!! Also to CW Dxers and contesters! If this passes, it will change amateur radio as we have known it forever. There will be no weak signal operation possible with the onset of digital noise in the analog receiver. It will violate the 300 baud or less rule of keeping wideband digital OUT of the narrow band digital space! Re: [Elecraft] RM-11708 proposal to FCC threatens CW and digital modes
The worst part of the quote from the yachtsman that really ticks me off is where he says: Its a great service because all of the other available Internet services cost money. Really? We end up with this QRM so boaters don't have to pay for internet services? In my comments to the FCC I stated that if there is an emergency and the faster communications is needed then the FCC has the ability to declare an emergency and allow otherwise unauthorized modes. Just like they do when they set aside a certain frequency. This is not an emergency nor is the guy checking his email a reason to change rules to suite them! The proponents say this will not cause problems. What I see is the interference this will cause to these stations amongst themselves in there narrow bandspace, they will then start moving out from each other taking up more and more bandspace! Moving other modes out as they do so. This is a disaster waiting to happen. BTW, this affects ALL amateurs so this crosses in to the on topic line. If this comes to fruition there will be a mass exodus of regular hams and this will affect not only Elecraft but all ham radio manufacturers! 73, Tim Herrick, KQ8M k...@kq8m.com AR-Cluster V6 kq8m.no-ip.org User Ports: 23, 7373 with local skimmer, 7374 without local skimmer Server Ports: V6 3607, V4 Active 3605, V4 Passive 3606 -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Sandy Blaize Sent: Monday, June 23, 2014 10:59 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] RM-11708 proposal to FCC threatens CW and digital modes think my comments on RM-11708 went thru. [Elecraft] KPA500 270V ERR
I sent the following email to Elecraft support today but would appreciate any input that the reflector could offer. 73 Paul K9NU My KPA500 (S/N 1073) gave me a 270V ERR message last evening. I removed the top cover (over-road the interlock switch) unplugged the white connector from the PA assembly and measured the no-load voltage at the gray wire. When AC power is applied, the voltage slowly rises to at best, 180 Vdc (starts off at about 90 volts and slowly raises to 180 volts in 15 seconds). The 75 volt supply is work fine. I have removed the power supply board from the amp. I see no visual damage to the board taking particular notice in the 270 volt area of the PCB. I applied 55 Vac to J1 J2 via an Isolation transformer and a variac. One at a time, I paralleled c9 thru c14 with another 10UF, 100 volt capacitor with no change in the output voltage noted. The voltage drop across each diode of the 6 diodes (d7, 8, 9) is around 8 to 10 volts. Can you give me some input as to where or what to do next? Re: [Elecraft] RM-11708 proposal to FCC threatens CW and digital modes
Your argument is basically free speech vs. the wishes of the forum owner. The list owner has observed that any post on amateur radio politics is going to generate a lot of traffic and is inevitably controversial. Re: [Elecraft] [XOT] freedom of speech...
Note: there is no freedom of speech on a forum such as the Elecraft e-mail reflector (and most other similar forums). Indeed, this forum could be placed in moderate mode by Elecraft and they can censor, reject, and even modify a posting, without any needed cause -- just per their whim! The subscribers are not protected by the first amendment in this situation. Actually, technically I think the freedom of speech only applies to grievances and protestations against the federal government but that is left to the constitutional lawyers to wrangle. 73, phil, K7PEH On Jun 23, 2014, at 10:03 AM, Lynn W. [Elecraft] Off-Topic - ARRL Field Day 630M Beacons
Sorry for the off-topic message; just attempting to distribute this information effectively. Thank you. Several Amateur Radio operators will be running Part 5 experimental 630M CW beacons during the ARRL Field day event: WG2XKA (op WA3ETD), 1W ERP 472.5 kHz VT WG2XJM (op NO3M), 20-30W ERP 473.0 kHz PA WG2XIQ (op KB5NJD), 1W ERP 474.0 kHz TX WD2XSH/20 (op N6LF), 20W ERP 475.0 kHz OR The WG2XJM 630M station consists of an Elecraft K3 operating in transverter mode (IF 10 MHz) with a VK3XDK 630M linear transverter. A 10 MHz GPSDO (Thunderbolt) sources a K3EXREF module as well as providing LO for the transverter. Reception reports and/or message copy is very much appreciated. Elaborate equipment is not required, many Amateurs already listening on the prospective 630M band are effectively doing so with existing or simple antennas for reception, including 80M dipoles, HF verticals, K9AYs, BOGs, 80/160 beverages, et.al. Many current HF radios with general coverage receivers (incl. ElecraftKX3) will also tune to the 472-479 kHz range. Best reception will be between sunset and sunrise (Saturday evening - Sunday morning). Please pass this information on to your Field Day group, local and/or regional nets, and fellow Amateurs. This operating event is being orchestrated to promote awareness of 630M operations, and is neither sanctioned nor in affiliation with the ARRL or Field Day directly. Many countries currently have secondary 630M Amateur allocations (including Canada) and the US should eventually follow suit. Reports can be sent to their respective station operators above. Thank you and have a fun and safe Field Day. 73 Eric NO3M (WG2XJM) n...@no3m.net http://no3m.net/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K2/100 Transmit shut down
Art, Normally, PA HOT and Hi REFL are 2 different things. For the PA HOT, let the KPA100 cool to ambient temperature and then power it on and check the K2 CAL TPA menu setting - it should be the room temperature in degC. (normal room temperature is about 23 degC). If it is much different than that value, set it to the ambient temperature. As for Hi Refl - do you get the same indication working into a dummy load (I know you specified a dummy load, but I am covering all bases)? If not, then you may want to investigate what has changed in your antenna system. OTOH, if you get Hi Refl on the dummy load, then the most likely cause is that the KPA100 wattmeter diodes have been damaged. The most likely cause is a static discharge from wind, rain, or nearby lightning while the antenna is connected. I would first replace D16 and D17 in the KPA100 and see if the problem is corrected. In most cases it will be. After that, you can help close the barn door after the horse got away by making certain all your antennas have a DC path across the feedline to bleed off static - a 5k to 50k non-reactive resistor (2 or 3 watts) will do that job just fine - connect it across the feedline. At the antenna feedpoint will work, but lacking that, place it inside an antenna switch in the shack. Speaking of antenna switches, arrange your switches to connect the K2 to a dummy load or a short to ground when not operating. If you have no antenna switch, then disconnect the antenna when not in use. Yes, I understand that other transceivers do not have those requirements, but they do not have a sensitive wattmeter right at the output to detect the actual power output. 73, Don W3FPR On 6/23/2014 8:23 PM, Arthur Lewis wrote: *My k2/100 has just developed a transmit problem. [Elecraft] Alignment and Test, Part 1 ... K1 2-band
I’m building a K1 for a fellow ham whose hands won’t allow the fine soldering work that this kit demands. This is the second K1 that I have built. All of the test points before alignment and test, part 1 have been nominal. I have successfully completed the tests on the LED and LCD/Error Codes without problem. When I plug in a pair of stereo headphones, the funny business begins … There is no output from the headphones. I rotate the AF GAIN without change. And, the LCD display immediately goes blank when I plug in the headphones. That said, I can remove the headphones and see the display fine. I can tap the MENU, set and edit the STL and STP without a problem. But, plug in headphones and the K1 goes blank. I have been reading this list long enough to know that 99% of problems during a build have to do with cold solder joints. I believe I’ve looked at the solder joints. I reflowed the 3 joints at the headphone jack. Any ideas about how to troubleshoot this problem? I’m missing something in this process. I will go back and make sure that I haven’t left any parts out, but I don’t think this is the case. Yes, you would be correct. The primary problem with most of the errors is an operator problem. Re: [Elecraft] Way OT - The Metric System is Inevitable
Engineering was metric (MKS) in the late 60s when I got my degree. Sure we did some calculations with feet and inches by mostly it was meters, kilograms, etc. Brian KB1VBF Sent from my iPad On Jun 22, 2014, at 11:06 PM, Dauer, Edward eda...@law.du.edu wrote: Three of the more important aspects of my life already are metric - healthcare (dosages are are almost universally in mg/l and many infusions are calculated in mg per meter of body surface squared); bicycling (even American-made frames use hex bolts measured in mm); and wine (a quarto is 250 ml, a bottle is 750 ml). The other stuff, like engineering, will eventually catch up. On the other hand, the legal system is still rather British. Re: [Elecraft] Using a KAT-500 and THP HL-1.5KFX
Bump… Anyone? I'm about to be in the same boat pretty soon. Already have the 1.5kfx and I'm going to have a k3 and a kat500. I'm hoping that that there is a way to make them work together smoothly, much like the k3/kpa500/kat500 do… On Sun, Jun 22, 2014 at 6:43 AM, Peter Chamalian W1RM w...@comcast.net wrote: Is anyone using this combination with automatic bandswitching/tuning? I have the amp and K3 along with the special cable that connects the K3 to the amp for auto bandswitching. I'm hoping that will also work with the KAT-500 added.
