I would be cautious about using a transformer above 40 meters, as the
stray capacitance may be too large.  I haven't tried it, though, so it
might work with some transformers.

The best solution, I think, is to build your own L-network tuner.
One coil, a 3-position switch, and one variable capacitor.  You don't
have to get a perfect match, just within the range of the internal
ATU, like 3:1. Once you find the right coil tap positions, the
internal ATU should be able to handle the small mismatch with
different antenna installations, etc.

It may seem like a lot of trouble, but if you can match the EFHW,
it's just about the most effective simple wire antenna you can use.

Re: [Elecraft] PAR/LNR EFHW antenna

2018-01-08 Thread Bill Johnson
I agree with what has Scott has written. EFHW from what I have read and
experienced, generally have ~ 3000+ ohm impedance at feed point. Thus the need
for an adequate transformer, most usually to match 50 Ohms. I use one on 160
and 80 meters (where it is really a full wave) at home by using a toroid and
windings with a tap. I do use a tuner for slight changes when the length
doesn't match the frequency I choose to use. A counter balance removes the
idea and radiation of the EFHW. A very short ground is important to remove
static potential on the low side of the coil to protect equipment. If you
google EFHW's you will finds loads of great stuff to read and help you. Good
luck.

I happen to like the ones I am using, but did buy a factory built coil after I
found my personally built could not give a native match at the desired freq as
my toroid did not have adequate specs despite what I had calculated would work.
The site I got my initial info from was incorrect and the co I bought the
toroid and wire from had an inadequate description. Live and learn. My home
made works best on EFHW above 40 meters.

My commercially built transformer in the 160 has very narrow bandwidth. A
remotely operated tuner broadens it but efficiency is reduced once off the
designed frequency. In the design is the selection of wire length and height
into the matching transformer. I do have the multiband EFHW but that requires
the appropriate wire length on each band. I carry the appropriate wires in my
antenna kit inside the KX2 large case. The small gauge silk-like wire is also
light and small. I have a super light 43' collapsible shore fishing pole to
string out the wire, versus getting a launched wire stuck in a tree and then be
potentially guilty of littering in the state park where I like to hang out.

Everything is present EXCEPT the little matching network that couples the EFHW

they couldn't do that, BUT they would sell me a new version of the complete
antenna for the paltry sum of around $80! I said "no thanks" and hung up the

I am after the schematic or the best guess of the components and parts
placement that will resonate this 40-30-20M antenna. It's not rocket science
but it's close!! As I understand it these antennas are fairly high impedance
wise, so I need some kind of matching network to bring that down to around 50
ohms for the KX2.

Failing that path, has anyone hooked an EFHW to the internal ATU with good
results? I would also include a cut to frequency ground radial that I would lay
out below the antenna. That would be the easiest thing and simple to employ.

Over the next 10-12 days I am planning on doing some portable operating from MD

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Another symmetry question

This "feature" has been commented on in the past. It appears the P3
automatically recomputes the display limits in Fixed Tune mode if the K3
frequency is changed via the RS232 port (i.e., the P3 gets the frequency
change command). When I use the Band buttons on the KPA500 to change
bands the P3 display limits don't change -- probably because the
frequency change is commanded by way of the serial bus between the
transceiver and the amp.

I also find this quite annoying and would like the P3 to respect my
manual settings when a QSY is commanded.

[Elecraft] Elecraft Hex Key worth?

2018-01-08 Thread john
Sorry, I was not aware that you were referring to an Elecraft CW paddle. I
was not aware that they made these. To me a hex key is the same as an Allen
wrench which is inside an Elecraft envelope with every transceiver and
k-pod.

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Another symmetry question

2018-01-08 Thread Bill Frantz

I think the following issue may be part of the same problem.

For the WARC bands, I like to have the P3 set up to show the
whole band. When I use wsjt-x to switch to 17M, the P3 changes
from showing 100KHz between 18.068 and 18.168 to showing 100KHz
from 18.100 to 18.200. Annoying.

Re: [Elecraft] PAR/LNR EFHW antenna

2018-01-08 Thread Rich Arland
Dennis, Mel and Rich:

Thanks for the quick replies. I have googled the EFHW and have some baseline
info to play with.

My original idea was to use the internal ATU of the KX2 coupled directly to
antenna and put a counterpoise on the ground side of the a rig's antenna
connector.

I have the Super Antennas MP-1 with extra extension mast sections and a bunch
of radials, so in the grand scheme of things if I can't get the EFHW to work
properly I can revert to the MP-1.

The QRP Guys have a neat little tuner that I might try. My parts bench stock
has dwindled over the last few years and Radio Shack is no longer with us for
parts and components, so it looks like I will be scrounging!!

Re: [Elecraft] PAR/LNR EFHW antenna

2018-01-08 Thread brian

Consider what W8JI says about end fed ants. He also addresses the PAR.
Interesting observation from one set of calcs he did- Maximum antenna
current is .758 amperes, while the coax common mode current maximum is
actually 1.02 amperes!

https://www.w8ji.com/end-fed_1_2_wave_matching_system_end%20feed.htm

Without a decent counterpoise, the Z you see could be anything. What
you see will be a function of your particular counterpoise.

Yes it can work with the KX2 with no coax feed line and those power levels.

His remarks about using high power are interesting.

[Elecraft] [P3] Another symmetry question

2018-01-08 Thread Fred Jensen
I have a K3/100.  For CW and RTTY below 10 m, I normally run a 20 KHz
span with the ends of the span on even 20 KHz boundaries [3500-3520,
3520-3540, etc].  I'm in Fixed Tune mode where the span edges remain
fixed and the VFO cursors move as I tune.  Tuning off the edge results
in a full 20 KHz shift [IAW, a new 20 KHz span].

When I change bands using BAND UP/DN, the P3 seems to preserve this
configuration from band to band.  The same seems to hold when I use
direct frequency entry.  However, when running N1MM+, typing a frequency
into the call sign window will go to that frequency on the radio but
will put the span edges at odd 20 KHz boundaries [3510-3530, 3530-3550]
and sometimes at 3515-3535.

Does anyone know how the P3 recalculates the span edges on band changes
from an external control program?  If I knew, I might be able to compensate.

Re: [Elecraft] PTT switch for K3

2018-01-08 Thread Bill Frantz
I built my own with a pushbutton switch that had what seemed
like a good feel from a ham fest.

It consists of two wedges of wood to set the angle of the pedal,
a base of 1/4" plywood with the switched recessed so just the
top is above the base, and a piece of 3/16" plywood hinged to
push the switch with the foot. The hinge is a piece of gaffer's
tape -- duct tape would also work. I may have to replace the
tape sometime, but it has held up well for about 4 years.

After I used it for a while, I added a "dead pedel" on the right
side. This lets me rest my foot on the dead pedal and just twist
the foot it to transmit. I would look for a dead pedal feature
in any commercial pedal, since holding my foot up caused sore
muscles after a while.

Some of the musician pedals can be switched between push-on,
release-off and push to toggle on/off. If you talk for a long
time, this option might be attractive and a substitute for a
dead pedal.

Re: [Elecraft] Panadapter Symmetry Question

2018-01-08 Thread Wes Stewart

Doug,

I have two K3s and two SDR-IQs and don't see this on either.  How wide are you
sweeping?  Across a 190 kHz band there is a little difference probably
attributable to filtering in the K3, but it's really minor and more-or-less
symmetrical.  I usually use 50 kHz in the menu and then sweep only 20 or 30 kHz.

Have you contacted the Elecraft Hex Key Collectors' Association (EHKCA)
website, or joined their e-mail list on QTH.net?

Frankly, run-of-the-mill garden-variety Elecraft hex keys seldom bring more
than a C-note, even when accompanied with the original Elecraft sales
receipts, owner's manuals, and authenticating certificates. It's common
knowledge in the Elecraft hex key collector community that only low
serial-numbered hex keys with the winged Elecraft emblem bring top dollar or
trade. If you are the lucky owner of one of those extremely-rare and
highly-desired beauties, announce details on the list I noted above or on
the "Classifieds" page of the EHKCA website. You may be able to arrange
even trade for a new K3s/KPA1500/P3 combo!

Good luck!

also really enjoyed having the RIT controls close to the keyboard.

I've been using foot switches since 1957, with my Viking II and 75A-4.
The first one was somewhat crude.
IMHO, the Linemaster series of industrial-strength footswitches is the
best. Very rugged, but responds to a light touch.

Mine gets used a LOT, and I expect it to outlast me!

Usually most guitar players have an abundance of  "stomp boxes". Of
course select one that doesn't have all the electronics and controls
included inside.

I checked with a local music and instrument store and asked about one
that was perhaps junk just to get the base.  The fellow asked what and
why I wanted one.  I told him and he handed me a used one, needed
cleaning and a paint job, and said, just change the connector to what
ever your need.   Nothing better than a Free Of Charge stomp box.  I'm
happy.

About 1/2 way down the post is a down-loadable spread sheet of

Eric,

Some of those functions are already present in the K3/K3S - read the
*entire* manual including the chart of menu functions to see more things that
you can do.

- jump up/down x kHz, see VFO OFS
- increase/decrease step of tuning encoder, see VFO CRS
- switch to a different band, see "Quick Memories" - I have not used the
BAND+ BAND- switches in a long time, band switching is a quick two
button tap.

[Elecraft] P3 “Point and Click” (again)

2018-01-08 Thread Ed Schuller via Elecraft
This is my once a year request for “point and click” functionality for the P3.
Being able to quickly move a mouse pointer over a signal on the P3 and click to
change frequency would be a welcomed feature. When you can’t hear half the
signals that populate the local band map, being able to click on what you can
actually hear would be a big plus.

[Elecraft] Panadapter Symmetry Question

2018-01-08 Thread Doug Millar via Elecraft
Hi, I have been noticing that on my P3 and on an SDR IQ hooked to the iF output
of either of two K3's,  that there is a small difference in level from one side
of zero beat to the other. The noise is about five db higher on the high
frequency side than on the lower side. Same on two different K3's, both with
upgraded PLL's. I know it is minor, but I am using the K3 as a back end for my
EME station and the higher noise tends to cover some signals.  Anyone else
noticed it? Any fixes or adjustments?   JPEG available.    Thanks, Doug K6JEY

I have used one of the "steel" types for many years. The "iron types" are
really rugged but require, in my opinion, to much force to operate. Mine

Untried but they have a PB pendant type too.

They are my go-to company for many items. Located here in NJ and I can

[Elecraft] K1 : L1 to L8 valuesss

2018-01-08 Thread Pascal Deveaux
Hello,

I have a K1 with 2 band (30m and 20m) and I would like to know the value (or
reference) of L1 -L8 value on the filter board.

L1 L2: 10MHz premix band-pass filters

L3 L4: 14MHz premix band-pass filters

L5 L6: 10MHz RF band-pass filters

L7 L8: 14MHz RF band-pass filters

I can't found the info in the owner's manual.

Thanks for your help,

Pascal Deveaux

Re: [Elecraft] Macros

2018-01-08 Thread Dave Cole (NK7Z)

Eric,

If you look at:

http://nk7z.net/adding-external-keypad-k3/

You will find a short article on adding a 64 key pad to the K3 for macro
selection. It assumes you have a P3 as well.

About 1/2 way down the post is a down-loadable spread sheet of macros,
they don't give you exactly what you wanted, but they may help in
getting you started in writing macros...

Fred's book is a really useful item to have, as well as Elecraft's P3
Macro programming manual.

73s and thanks,

[Elecraft] KX2: mono headphone with dual-watch enabled ok?

2018-01-08 Thread John Harper
Good morning all,

A recent article in CQ Magazine describes a technique of listening to a
station on two slightly different frequencies (65-80 Hz apart) in order to
possibly increase the ability to copy weak signals. Both frequencies need
to be provided to both sides of the headphones to achieve this effect.

I know that the KX2/KX3 can receive two freqs at once with dual-watch
enabled and that with stereo phones, this puts one VFO in each ear.

My question is, would using mono headphones (with dual watch enabled)
damage the KX in any way? The article is described here, along with the
comment from a reader that prompts this question:

https://ae5x.blogspot.com/2018/01/improving-signalnoise-of-cw-signals-by.html

There's a 6X6 concrete post in the ground with a bronze plaque on it from the

For about a month, 30 years ago I had an RF transmitter in my barn that was
used as a locater beacon for a test program that used doppler shift from its

Still have a 2 inch cork in the wall plugging up the hole where the coax fed

[Elecraft] K-Pod and/or K3 programmig?

2018-01-08 Thread j...@kk9a.com
I set both of my K-PODs to switch to specific bands. I am not at home now
or I would copy the programs however it was easy to find in the manual. If
you cannot find it I can send it to you tonight. I used this feature a lot
over the weekend, it is much nicer than pressing the up/down toggle on the
K3S. I just wish there was more room on the K-POD to label the buttons. I
also really enjoyed having the RIT controls close to the keyboard.

Eric,

Some of those functions are already present in the K3/K3S - read the
*entire* manual including the chart of menu functions to see more things
that you can do.

- jump up/down x kHz, see VFO OFS
- increase/decrease step of tuning encoder, see VFO CRS
- switch to a different band, see "Quick Memories" - I have not used the
BAND+ BAND- switches in a long time, band switching is a quick two
button tap.

I use my old J-38 straight key wired to a RCA plug that goes into the PTT
jack on the rear of the K3. The advantage is that you don't have to pick it
up to use it or put it down to type. Easy to wire up too. Buy an audio
cable, lop off one connector, dress the leads out and connect them to the
key binding posts.

BTW, have you considered using VOX in the contest? Completely hands free.

and I bought it at our annual HamFest. It looks to be of decent quality,
but I don't know his source.  Anyway, if this one dies, I am definitely
going to try a sustain pedal. They typically have a switch which
switches the operation from on/off to a variable resistance (depending
on what you are using it for). It should work fine for PTT operation in
the on/off mode, and they are fairly rugged. I may have to try it soon
just to see how one would feel in actual operation.

If you don't want to build something, check out a music store.  The
kind of foot switch bands use is very rugged and reliable.
