Re: [Elecraft] 32 bit Elecraft Utility Apps

2018-04-12 Thread David Fleming via Elecraft
Yes.. No worries. All new releases of the Mac and Linux versions of the
Elecraft Utilities will be 64-bit. As a result, OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) will
no longer be supported and users of 32-bit Linux will need to upgrade to a
64-bit distro. This will be a gradual process as new revisions of the Utilities
are released.

Out of curiosity, is anyone still using OS X 10.6?

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 and SCS Pactor Modem Setup

2018-04-12 Thread Erlend Grimseid
Finally something i can help with. :)

I have used an scs DR 7400 modem with my KX3 for some time, with great
success.

The first thing you would need to do is to make an cable to connect the tnc
to the radio. I made an custom plugg of two stereo male plugs and one
female. From the head phones connector i connected one side to the cable
going to the tnc, and one side to the female connector for monitoring.
Remember to hook up the ptt line as pactor is really sensitive to ptt
timing. All molded in polymorph plastic.

If anyone is interested i could make a quick write up on my blog.

Then for settings. I suspect that the kx2 would be similar to my kx3.

And credit where credit is due. I got this from Greg VA7BC.

On radio (KX3):
-MODE: USB or USB Digital
-COMPression: OFF
-Turn MIC gain off then gradually increase during PACTOR transmission so
that 4 ALC bars are lit
and the 5th bar may flash occasional. For me, MIC=3 does this
-AF gain = 2

Also remember to turn off vox, and sett mic button to ptt BEFORE entering
Digital mode on the kx3. I dont know with the KX2, but with the KX3 I could
not change this after switching to data mode. This might have changed with
software updates. I have't checked.

In RMS-express select radio K3 as the dont support KX3. I dont know if this
will work with the KX2.

Give me a line if you have any questions or if anyone is interested in a
blog post on this subject.

Re: [Elecraft] 32 bit Elecraft Utility Apps

2018-04-12 Thread Dave Sublette
Good morning David,

A curious bit of circumstance forced me to use an earlier version of the
Apple O/S recently. My old Mac Mini died when its UPS went hysterical and
cycled the power violently several times. I bought a new one, complete
with 16GB RAM and the 1TB Fusion Drive (and a new power backup system).

My old Mini setup ran Parallels and Win7/64 so I could run several amateur
radio programs on it. When I tried partitioning the new drive for 250GB
for Boot camp. It wouldn't do it. There is a BUG in High Sierra that
causes this and I have informed Apple of it. They have had others report
the same. They had o way to fix it at the time I was having the problem
in late March.

My solution was to wipe the new drive and install an earlier version -- in
this case 10.6 -- temporarily. The older disk utility will partition the
new drive the way I needed it. After installing Win7/64, I reinstalled
High Sierra and all was well.

This is an example of how I had to drop back to an older O/S, if only
temporarily.

[Elecraft] K3s and KX3 driving KPA500

2018-04-12 Thread Michael Blake
Prior to acquiring an ACC cable to interconnect my KPA500 to the K3s I used an
RCA WYE cable to allow me to parallel the KEY signal from both the K3s and the
KX3 to the KPA500. This has worked well allowing me to get about 350 watts out
of the KPA500 when driven with the KX3.

After reviewing the KPA500 schematics it appears that pin 10 in the ACC cable
is diode ORED with the KEY In jack so connecting the K3s via the ACC connector
and the KX3 via the KEY IN RCA jack should work as before.

Is this correct?

[Elecraft] Subject: Astron VS-35M Powwer Supply V-

I agree with Joe. I do not like the connections with modern radios
concerning power and also microphone. I loved the old Cinch Jones on Drakes
and Swans or 9 Pin Collins Power Connections. This power pole stuff is
really rotten weak and cheap and the same goes for the Mike connections.
Concerning how spectacularly the Elecraft radios work on RX and also TX and
how delighted we are I sincerely hope that the K4 will have inputs we are
happy with. Why are the CW and Earphone jacks traditional when everything
else is cheap and junky?

Always use DATA A mode for data. That is a USB mode that automatically turns

On the other hand, the K3 Utility has to my knowledge never been available for
ARM, 32-bit or otherwise.
32-bit Linux is pretty dead as OS on desktops/laptops. Sure, many embedded
systems still are 32-bit, but the K3 Utility is a desktop application.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 168, Issue 13

2018-04-12 Thread Bob McGraw K4TAX
With #10 AWG wire for the DC power cable, set the supply no load voltage
to 14.0.  This is well within the safe operating range of the radio per
Elecraft specifications.     [Minimum 11.0 volts, Maximum 15.0 volts]

In transmit 100 watts, you should see 13.5 volts or more at the radio.
You can easily and accurately monitor the voltage at the radio, no load
and load, by setting the DISP to read voltage.  If you have more than a
0.5 volt drop between receive and transmit in CW mode, 100 watts, key
down, either there is a power supply regulation issue, or the IR drop in
the power cables and connections are  excessive.

Also, the radio should be connected direct to the power supply terminals
and not through some other power distribution means. { I don't care what
the advertisers say.} IR drop is IR drop and every conductor and
every connector is a contributor to IR drop.

Do to my longer lead length (power supply on floor) I used 8ga wire. This
was difficult to stuff into the K3S sized PowerPole. Even with the shorter
leads that I use on contest expeditions along with a switching power
supply I found that I need 10ga wire to keep the voltage above 13.5 on TX.
I think that larger PowerPoles or studs would have been nicer for those
interested in keeping the K3S voltage in the desirable range. Double as
Joe suggested would also work if you wanted to run two sets of wires.

Re: [Elecraft] Astron VS-35M Powwer Supply V-

2018-04-12 Thread James Wilson
Buck,

Running a heavy power supply line with a lighter gauge wire at
the radio end OR a lighter wire at the power supply end, the
overall net supply resistance (and voltage drop) will be the same.
For example, 100 Ohms in series with 1 Ohm equals 101 Ohms net total
resistance.

Likewise 1 Ohm in series with 100 Ohms is still 101 Ohms.

It doesn't matter if you take the voltage drop at the input or
at the output end of the power run if the total load is at the
end of the run.

I checked with Dr. Ohm to verify this. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 and SCS Pactor Modem Setup

2018-04-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

All,

While those connections and settings may work, I see 2 things that can
be considered improvements.

First is to use DATA A - its default sideband is USB and it turns off
compression and EQ leaving your normal SSB EQ and Compression settings
as you choose.

Secondly, using DATA A turns the MIC input into a LINE Input which will
make the MIC Gain settings more mid-range. A low setting of 3 does not
have very fine granularity which may give trouble setting the KX2 ALC to
4 bars with the 5th bar flashing.

Also in may be better to lower the audio levels elsewhere in the system.
This is basically a soundcard audio application, so the information on
my website www.w3fpr.com may be helpful - on my site, scroll down the
left column to the last entry and click to open that link. It has
information on setting the various audio controls that may be available
(set them to mid-range to start).

Finally something i can help with. :)

I have used an scs DR 7400 modem with my KX3 for some time, with great

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Revival of a resting one...

2018-04-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Jon,

I don't think the serial number information for older K2s is still
available from Elecraft.

As for the upgrades, I suggest you download the instructions for the K2
A to B upgrade. That is only the basic upgrade. The 1st page of the
instructions lists several other upgrade kits. Download the
instructions for each of them to determine which (if any) have been
installed on your K2. Installing all of them will give you a K2 that is
almost equal to a new K2.

In addition, changing the IF crystals to the current crystals will
improve the filters on your K2. If you have the KSB2 board, change
those crystals as well - Elecraft sells a set of 14 matched crystals for
the K2 and KSB2 as well as a set of 7 for the base K2 only.
While you have the crystals off the KSB2 board, it is easy to change the
filter capacitors to extend the filter bandpass from the original 2.1kHs
to the new 2.4kHz - the capacitor kit is SSBCAPKT.

As far as firmware, upgrade the MCU and KIO ICs to the new version. The
only other firmware upgrade that is needed may be the KSB2 which should
be upgraded if you ever add the KPA100.

The KAT2 wiring change was only valid for a short run of boards when the
vendor printed the boards upside-down.

Download the KSB2 PSK mod instructions to see if you have the updated
resistor and capacitor changes - if not, change them.

If all that is done, your K2 will perform like a new one.

Been looking over the various places of K2 lore, for updates and so

First order of business ,  is it possible to have my S/N looked up?
Found a database that I don't seem to be in,  found that the Elecraft

of looking things up,  though I have a few questions there and probably

Another next,  I've been having difficulty checking to see which
versions of firmware are the latest,  and what the various versions
add.  Is there a version change log or something like that?

Here's what I have so far,  looks like the two main ones are down a

MCU    2.01f
RF        1.02
KSB2    1.04
ATU 1.03 f

Here's the PCB versions marked on the boards:

Main rev A
Control rev A
ATU     rev C (note, the board does NOT match the picture of the recent
note stating some cut and jumper rework should be done on a rev C)

NB and 160m  rev D
SSB    don't have,  will have to yank it to read

So, the beginning of a journey.   Will greatly appreciate whatever tips
and directions I could be pointed in.

Sure there are 32-bit desktops out there, therefor I wrote pretty dead, not
completely dead ;-)
Two years ago, Ubuntu did a poll and 92% answered they used the 64-bit
version. Now that is hardly representative for all distributions, but on the
other hand it was two years ago...
Maintaining a 32-bit desktop is getting harder and harder. Bugs that only
affect i386 is getting more common as hardly anyone testing new versions run
i386. And the 3GB memory per process limit is starting to be a real issue.
The larger distributions will probably drop i386 support in a year or two.

Let's not get into a technical Linux discussion here. We hams probably keep
old computers around way longer than the average user. The (sad) truth is that
most people today see their laptops and phones etc as consumables that you

I agree that providing both a 32-bit and a 64-bit version would be nice. But
if Elecraft need to chose between either 32-bit or 64-bit (and two versions
obviously cost more than one to maintain), then 64-bit is the obvious choice
today.

[Elecraft] K1 BUILD ISSUES

2018-04-12 Thread KENT TRIMBLE
The following two issues arose during a K1 build that, while obvious to
some, weren't to me, and probably wouldn't be to many . . .

(1)  Even though the Errata sheet says trimmer caps C13 and C20 "may
look different from what is shown", the trimmer caps shipped with recent
K1 kits not only look different, they are structurally different in that
they have no "flattened" side which is the indicator for how they are to
be mounted.  However, continuity testing between the tuning slot (the
metallic tab that the screw driver turns) and each contact leg will
reveal that the leg with the continuity is the same as the "flattened"
end.  I would have guessed it was the leg with the dab of red paint but
I would have been wrong.

(2)  At first I thought I was missing eight 0.1mf capacitors said to be
labeled "104."  A strip of eight, blue, square components with no "104"
was remaining in the RF board bag, and I eventually surmised they
constituted the missing capacitors, although they looked different from
any capacitor I had ever seen in my 58 years in the hobby.

My thanks to Don Wilhelm for saving me a lot of extra work.

Suspecting the K1 and K2 kits are probably not long for this Earth, I
bought both last Fall with the intent of building the K1 this Spring and
the K2 this summer.  A close friend talked me out of my KX1 a while back
which, for some reason, resurrected an urge to build again.  I've built
all the mini-modules and the big rigs, but screw-driver assembly isn't
nearly as satisfying as solder-assembly.

Note that twisting power conductors only helps prevent coupling to and

Use *realistic* resistance values. For example, a 10 foot piece of

#12 wire (1.5 milli-Ohms per foot) is equivalent to 11' 3" of #8

The *contact resistance* in a 15A Power Pole (0.88 milli-Ohms) is,

Ohm's Law is *exactly* why we would all be better off if the power
jack on the K3/K3S was doubled up and the power cable replaced with
#6 or #8 wire even if it were necessary to splice in some 4" pieces
of #10 or #12 wire to mate with the 15A Power Pole connectors.

#10 or 1/4" bolts for the power terminal with #8 wire and ring
terminals on both ends would reduce the voltage drop in the power
cable by 75%, if the bolted connections were torqued properly,
compared to #12 wire and 15A Power Pole connectors.

For example, 100 Ohms in series with 1 Ohm equals 101 Ohms net total

Likewise 1 Ohm in series with 100 Ohms is still 101 Ohms.

It doesn't matter if you take the voltage drop at the input or

[Elecraft] [KX3] New Product: SPX3 External Speaker

2018-04-12 Thread Robert J. Morris
I've built a prototype powered external speaker for the KX3, and would
like some feedback on what folks would desire in terms of features, and
whether folks would want to own one.

The speaker currently is designed to match the overall look of the KX3
and PX3, and accept similar third-party panels and covers as for the KX
line. Presently, it uses the same legs and feet as the KX3 and PX3, and
is the same height and depth as those. There is one USB port for
charging the internal lithium battery, and input and output stereo
jacks. The speaker is mono. The output jack redirects the right channel
from the stereo input for a second speaker, just like with the Elecraft
SP3 and other similar external speakers. The speaker is amplified.

The SPX3 puts out a maximum of 3W, and is about as loud as any external
radio speaker gets. Volume is adjusted by the KX3. It plugs into the KX3
PHONES jack. There is a built-in low pass filter to reduce noise and
improve the listening experience.

The prototype, as you'll see in pictures in the links below, is slightly
narrower than the expected finished product. The speaker driver and
on/off switch are both waterproof, but - just like the KX3 and PX3 - the
case isn't. So, don't drop it in a lake. It will handle all conditions
appropriate for the KX3, and is meant for indoor and outdoor use. Having
matched the case design so closely to the KX3, it isn't as airtight as
I'd like it, so the next prototype will have the case halves join in a
more customary way, but remain the same dimensions and overall look.
This will also improve ingress protection.

You'll see the speaker is not a polished finished product yet, as it's a
rough first prototype made by hand. Your feedback will assure the final
product is what you want gracing your portable shack.

Please note, the KX3 in the photo is only to demonstrate the speaker.

All feedback is welcome. Please let me know which reasonable
enhancements or simplifications you'd like to see.
Examples:
* Would you want an output USB port to use the speaker to charge your
phone?
* Would you want to dispense with the built-in battery, and run it
entirely from external power?
* Would you want a second passive speaker driven by the first to save on
weight and cost? That is, a SPX3A (active, with battery, charger, and
amp) and SPX3P (passive, with only speaker driver)
* If you're a KX2 user, would you like me to produce the SPX2 (also in
development)?

Re: [Elecraft] K1 BUILD ISSUES

2018-04-12 Thread Don Wilhelm

Kent and all,

The K1 needed to be discontinued because the enclosure metalwork was no
longer available, and the cost for a new vendor to tool up was prohibitive.

OTOH, the K2 is around and selling for just as long as possible.
Procurement of thru-hole components becomes more difficult as
manufacturers are switching to all SMD components. So far Elecraft has
been able to provide suitable substitutes such as the SA612 IC mounted
on a carrier board so it can be used in a thru-hole board. Other such
substitutions will be coming in the future, but Elecraft is dedicated to
keeping the K2 kit alive for as long as possible.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S birdies?

2018-04-12 Thread Fred Jensen
We had a sudden case of "birdies" in a K3 on 160 at W7RN.  Strangely,
they began abruptly as you tuned up the band [around 1838 IIRC], and
extended for *exactly* 15 KHz where they then disappeared.  Problem
turned out to be a shield dislodged from the syn.

Make sure the internal cables with the little TNC connectors are all seated
properly. A poor shield connection can contribute to birdies.
Oxidation or vibration could create this condition over time.

Hi All.

I've been monitoring this list for a while, and have gained some

I built my K3S #11310 last July, and I added the 100 watt amp and
sub-receiver last December.

A few weeks ago, I started hearing some unusual tones around 14380 KHz
and 7259 KHz. The tones are much louder on 14380 than on 7259. At
14380, I hear a lower-pitched tone on 14279.80, and a higher pitched
tone 14279.85. I hear both of these with no antenna connected. On 40m,
the tone is quiet enough that the background noise overcomes the tone.
But on 20m, the tones are quite loud. I also hear the tones on the
sub-receiver.

Prior to a few weeks ago, I'm certain these tones were not present. I
saw the thread from 2012 about moving cables around in a K3, but if
there was a build problem, wouldn't these sounds have appeared
immediately? My routers are far away from my shack, and there is no
new equipment in the shack.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

[Elecraft] Astron VS-35M Powwer Supply V-

2018-04-12 Thread j...@kk9a.com
That is some lossy wire in your example:) The reason for the lighter
gauge splice suggestion was to provide a way to connect heavy wire to the
Elecraft K3 and K3S. I can directly connect 1 awg wire to my Astron power
supply but technically only 10 awg to the small PowerPole connector on the
transceiver.

Yes. This is done to minimize inductively coupled crosstalk between
pairs, which is critical to Ethernet transmission. A pair from CAT5/6
cable used to carry audio or RF provides very good rejection of
differential mode coupling to/from the cable. It's a great choice for
telephone wiring if RFI to the phone line (including DSL) is a problem.
A CAT5/6 pair is also a great choice for adding a ferrite common mode
choke to a low band receive antenna. I've completed a set of
measurements on this and will publish an applications note in the near
future.

Re: [Elecraft] Astron VS-35M Powwer Supply V-

2018-04-12 Thread Edward R Cole
I run all my 12v equipment (almost anyway) on a 50A Astron PS. Since
the PS is rack-mounted in a half-height cabinet the dc cable is about
12-foot long, so I used #4 welding cable that terminates on a 30A
Fuse holder. That feeds two HD barrier strip terminal blocks (for
pos and neg rails). The terminals accommodate No. 10 awg cables to
the heaviest current loads. A secondary strip handles small stuff
(under 5A total).

The PS runs 13.71v and drops to 13.5v at the fuse holder. K3 sees
about 13.35v (radio is 10w version). I have only two PowerPole
equipped pieces; the rest use terminals or other connectors like
Molex, etc. (even one Cinch-Jones). I count 14 loads connected to
the 13v power distribution (not all are used simultaneously).

In the case of running to a regular-sized PP connector I just add a
few inches of no.14 awg (splice is two wires soldered and covered
with heat shrink)

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - Revival of a resting one...

2018-04-12 Thread Jon

Hi Don...

Well,  so far I'm pretty certain I did the A > B changes,  and I did do
the IF and the SSB crystal and cap filter mods.  I'll be reading thru
that again,  in my first look I got the impression there might have been
a later, better, version of the Xtals? Wasn't sure.   PSK was just
starting out, and I recall doing the IMD improvement change. (What ever
happened to PSK-31 and keyboard ragchew contacts, anyway?  Ooops, don't
want to start anything...)

Finally building and using the KIO2 is pretty slick,  have been running
WSJT-X and monitoring some WSPR and FT8,  kinda cool to have computer
control of the rig, watch it do auto bandswitching while collecting WSPR
spots.  I still have to find the spare mic connectors I used to have
handy and build the TX half of the cabling.  Don't worry K9YC,  there
will be #31 ferrite involved...   And, I'm pretty sure I did the Pin 1
issue mods, grounding the mic shell and headphone jack solidly...

OK, the AT issue sounds like it happened after my board.  And, someday I
might get the KPA100 and do the two box setup, so the KSB2 FW update is
something to remember.

I know I used to have my S/N in posts here... kinda surprised I haven't
been able to find a single post of mine,  going back thru the reflector
site archives. I had the kit around 2000,  would think I was chatting
away into 2001 or longer,  where the archive ends.  I dont see any
easier search method than opening a month at a time though,  might be
missing them.  Anyone know if there's a more comprehensive search
method?  My S/N was in the 1500's,  if I remember right...

Definitely need to go thru my filters,  had been tweaking them a bit,
not in the way you're supposed to,  and I know they're not right now.
Have a few audio spectrum programs that we wish we had back then,  so

the instructions lists several other upgrade kits. Download the

is almost equal to a new K2.

In addition, changing the IF crystals to the current crystals will
improve the filters on your K2.  If you have the KSB2 board, change
those crystals as well - Elecraft sells a set of 14 matched crystals
for the K2 and KSB2 as well as a set of 7 for the base K2 only.
While you have the crystals off the KSB2 board, it is easy to change
the filter capacitors to extend the filter bandpass from the original
2.1kHs to the new 2.4kHz - the capacitor kit is SSBCAPKT.

As far as firmware, upgrade the MCU and KIO ICs to the new version.
The only other firmware upgrade that is needed may be the KSB2 which
should be upgraded if you ever add the KPA100.

The KAT2 wiring change was only valid for a short run of boards when
the vendor printed the boards upside-down.

Download the KSB2 PSK mod instructions to see if you have the updated

If all that is done, your K2 will perform like a new one.

Jon,

If you want to confirm that you have the latest crystals, look at the

If you add the KPA100, you should have the K2 Keying Waveshape Mod.  The

they became obvious.  A kit is not currently available from Elecraft,

Buck,

Running a heavy power supply line with a lighter gauge wire at the radio end
OR a lighter wire at the power supply end, the overall net supply resistance
(and voltage drop) will be the same.
For example, 100 Ohms in series with 1 Ohm equals 101 Ohms net total
resistance.

Likewise 1 Ohm in series with 100 Ohms is still 101 Ohms.

It doesn't matter if you take the voltage drop at the input or at the output
end of the power run if the total load is at the end of the run.

I checked with Dr. Ohm to verify this. :-)

Re: [Elecraft] KX2 "HI CUR" Warning

2018-04-12 Thread Chris
Thanks to everyone for your assistance. After exhausting the ideas
suggested in this thread, I did have to send my KX2 to Elecraft for
service. They determined the issue was "U20, U22 drivers for PA at fault."

Looking at the schematic, these two components appear to drive the final
FETs.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what may have caused this failure? It's
not clear to me whether a high SWR could have provoked this.

Note: U20 and U22 are located on schematic "Assembly E850729", Sheet 3
of 4. It has these as SGA7489, but this part may be discontinued.
Elecraft replaced both of these with part E600447/ GALI-84+.

Speak for yourself Sir.

There are 100's of 1000's of us out here with older hardware, happily
running current 32 bit os's such as Mint 18.x 32 bit, and all works fine.

Why follow the MS/Apple flock of sheep, just because they are moving to
64 bit systems?

There is no advantage for 99.9% of users, to move to a 64 bit OS,
whatever the flavor.

The hardware wont support the oft quoted 10's of GB of RAM (even if the
CPU might.)   Plus, for the ram we've got, with the system maxed out (be
that 4, 8, 12 or more GB) any given app takes twice the space compared
to 32 bit code, same with the storage.

It's marketing BS foisted on us by the likes of MS and that Fruit company.

Plus you then have to load 32 bit compatibility tools in some OS's, to
carry on running the software you have!

So why bother...

As to the K3/KX3 utility, well, the transfer to the radio is over an 8
bit wide path.  Need I say more.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Digest, Vol 168, Issue 14

2018-04-12 Thread BJ ROLLISON
First, just to be transparent I worked as an software engineer at Microsoft for
20 years.

I agree there is sometimes no need for some users to move from a 32-bit system,
to a 64-bit system. For example, if you have a computer dedicated in your
shack, and mostly run apps for amateur radio or the internet, do not do run
multiple programs simultaneously and switch between them frequently or do a lot
of code crunching or image processing than you may not need a 64-bit machine.
Also, since it is very unlikely that most amateur radio apps will likely be
ported to 64-bit anytime soon.

However, there is tremendous advantage of a 64-bit system over a 32-bit system
for many users who use their computers for more complex operations besides
running a few limited apps and browsing the web.

Simply put, a 64-bit system will process large amounts of data through RAM more
efficiently compared to a 32-bit system. In layman's terms that means that
searching a large database of QSO's will take less time; especially if you have
other apps running in the background.

While a 64-bit system will use more memory space compared to a 32-bit system;
it is false to say the space is 2x more.

The 64-bit system also allows users to exceed the 4Gb limit of 32-bit systems.
And many modern apps are memory intensive. Also many users who multi-task apps
on their computers, use memory intensive programs (photo processing, code
crunching, etc.) or use browser apps that are constantly auto refreshing, will
greatly benefit from a 64-bit system. Also, while a 64-bit system will use 4GB
of RAM more effectively, I personally would not recommend anything less than
8GB of RAM.

32-bit Linux is pretty dead as OS on desktops/laptops. Sure, many embedded

Re: [Elecraft] 32 bit Elecraft Utility Apps

2018-04-12 Thread Joseph Reed
Actually there is a Linux version of the KX3 utility. The error posted
suggests it might have been the Windows X86 version, or needs to be compiled
for the ARM processor instead of the Intel/AMD. Regardless the source code is
not available so move along folks, nothing to see here. And since Raspbian is
a Debian derivative you would kind of sort of think it would work. Debian,
yuck, CentOS :)

All of my Pi 2B and Pi 3 units are deployed with application specific tasks.
But I have a couple of Pi Zeros that aren’t earning their keep. When I can
find the time I’ll test it.

Re: [Elecraft] 32 bit Elecraft Utility Apps

2018-04-12 Thread Thorpe, Jeffrey
Yes - you are correct. It didn’t occur to me when I installed it that it
shouldn’t run due to the different architecture.
Turns out that the first thing I installed to the fresh installation of
Raspbian was Exagear Desktop to test with a different application (a windows
one.) I had thought that you had to tell ED to start the 686 emulator prior to
running an x86 app, but it appears to automatically invoke when it detects the
different architecture trying to load. So it started the emulator and runs KX3
Util inside it.
It isn’t perfect though - for some reason it fails to connect to
ftp.elecraft.com with a 127 error, even though the x86 machine can go to the
internet. KX3 Util does connect to the KX3 and can do everything else though.
Guess I’ll have to figure out how to correct that one problem.

I expect that a some time in the not-to-distant future they will release a
64-bit version of Raspbian. It would be nice to have a native KX3 Util program
compiled for the Arm. Raspberry Pis just get more popular for ham radio. It
runs the FL suite, WSJT-X, and Chirp.

Use *realistic* resistance values.  For example, a 10 foot piece of
of #8 wire (0.63 milli-Ohms per foot) with a six inch "pigtail" of
#12 wire (1.5 milli-Ohms per foot) is equivalent to 11' 3" of #8
wire or less than one foot of #12 wire.

run on 64 bit operating systems? If that's the case then elecraft will release
a 64 bit version of the utilities. If the 32 bit utilities  do run on a 64 bit
OS then what's the point? There is no point. A 32 bit version of their
utilities will work just as well as just fast over a rs232 connection no matter
if the OS is 64 bit 128 bit or 256 bit. So the question is will these utilities
not run on a 64 bit OS? They are 32 bit and run just fine on 64 bit windows..

Re: [Elecraft] KXPA100 fan for dig modes

2018-04-12 Thread Walter Underwood
I see it is spec’ed for 12 V. Does it catch fire if you run it on 13.8 V, like
most ham power supplies? Or 14.8 V, like my shack?

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] New Product: SPX3 External Speaker

Hi Paul,

Thanks for sharing your interest. I'm glad you don't want a USB output
port. Although it wouldn't be difficult, it's beyond the purpose of the
product.

Re: [Elecraft] 32 bit Elecraft Utility Apps

2018-04-12 Thread Martin Sole
This probably started with the Mac OS thing. My understanding is that
post High Sierra it will be just 64 bit and they will start dropping
support for 32 bit so very possible that on a Mac lots of (some?) 32 bit
apps may not work.

When are we going to see 128 bit OS's :)

Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] New Product: SPX3 External Speaker

2018-04-12 Thread Joan
What I would love [to buy] for the KX2: a pair of speakers, thus: an SPX2A
speaker (with an inboard stereo amplifier) which can be used alone as a
monaural speaker—but which is also configurable for stereo audio with the
addition of the optional SPX2P
