Re: [Elecraft] K3s can only transmit wsjt if the K3s codec is windows default.
Peter, Absolutely brilliant! I never have seen this windows page or read about it, but it absolutely did the trick. I now have an alternate soundcard selected in windows sound control panel and have WSJT-X configured in App volume and device preferences. I have to experiment to be sure nothing gets out sound-wise from the computer but at first exposure, this looks to be dead on. How many others have not yet discovered this! 73! When I first moved to the SF Bay area in the early 1980s, I was surprised by the number of power outages, compared to where I grew up in Louisiana with heavy weather. The first light rain would be accompanied by outages. With six or more rainless summer months, dust and grit would accumulate on the power line insulators. The first light rain would create conductive mud and trip breakers. So perpetual drought is just a way to build up more dust on the line. I think we take coaxial cable for granted. It was a brilliant invention and a real gift to people who love radio. Re: [Elecraft] K3s can only transmit wsjt if the K3s codec is windows default.
G'day Gary, This should work : Run WSJT-X Go to the system settings via the cog in the start menu. Click on "System (Display, sound, notifications") Click on "Sound" Scroll down to "Other sound options" and click on "App volume and device preferences". Select WSJT-X from the list of displayed apps and select your USB CODEC for both input and output. Note that I don't use WSJT-X but that's how it's done for everything else. Re: [Elecraft] KAT 500 and open wire
Using matching transformers and my spectrum analyzer with tracking generator, I measured a 100 ft length dry and I measured it wet. My measurements indicated the velocity factor changed when wet, i.e. the electrical length of the line changed. Thus explains to me the reason to "retune" when the line is wet or covered with frost, ice or snow. With my tuner, that means I must push a button. Oh geez. I agree the loss does increase a wee bit when wet in a horizontal position. Considering we have less than 100 days with recorded or measured precipitation in my area, it is no big deal. My window line is mostly vertical and that which is horizontal has about 5 twists per 10 ft. Still worst case, I find it has less loss than coax and less expensive than coax which has equal or less loss. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 1/18/2019 8:08 PM, Al Lorona wrote: G3TXQ's work here is awesome, as is N7WS's before him. Re: [Elecraft] WSJT-X Frequency Anomaly
One subtle point is to make certain in CW mode that you have tuned WWV to the carrier frequency and not to one of the transmitted tones. You also must tune to the audio pitch you have set for your sidetone. That is why SPOT is so important. Listen for the WOW-WOW-WOW of the beat note between WWV and your SPOT frequency. Tune the VFO until the WOW-WOW-WOW slows to a stop if possible - then look at the frequency. If it does not have a string of zeros to the right side, adjust the K3 Reference Oscillator as indicated in the manual Calibration Procedures - Use Method 2. I mention this because I have encountered many hams who do not know what zero-beat is. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/18/2019 6:15 PM, Bob McGraw K4TAX wrote: One easy method is place the radio on the CW mode. Do a sanity check by listening to WWV. That will tell you if your various radios are telling frequency lies or not. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 external mains switch
Bill: That is my general objective. Having surge protector strips all over the house has not proven worthwhile. On the other hand, the installation of whole house surge protection has proven to be much more successful. This also takes care of switching transits cause by load balancing by the power company. As to protection for lightning, that's a totally different approach and methodology. Lightning rods installed on the house, all ground rods bonded together, copper plumbing to ground system, all services {phone, cable, TV antenna, satellite dish and etc} connected to the bonded ground system. Still if there is a direct strike, as we have received, get ready to repair and replace some stuff. Hopefully, the house is still standing. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 1/18/2019 3:43 PM, Bill Johnson wrote: Bob, totally agree and this is exactly what I have. Main breaker box, whole house protection. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 external mains switch
If lightning is the item of concern, there's bigger fish to fry in that regard. Lightning protection is an entire other story and a very specific approach to lightning mitigation. I use the word "mitigation" to emphasize the point that all efforts for lightning protection is an effort to "minimize" the damage. Notice I didn't say eliminate the damage. Won't happen. I told a friend who had asked "how do I protect my equipment from lightning damage?". My answer; "put it in the box, seal the box, place the box under the bed and hope that a lightning strike isn't the cause for the the house to burn down". Come to think about it " do houses burn up, or do they burn down?" Guess it makes no difference. 73 Bob, K4TAX On 1/18/2019 11:25 AM, Macy monkeys wrote: Yes, lightning was a concern. Re: [Elecraft] WSJT-X Frequency Anomaly
The obvious first places to look are the calibrations of each radio. My K3 (always one, has the TCXO option) stays within a cycle or two and I can 'net' it to within about a quarter cycle (using the WOW method). Who ever answers on the tone freq I use in FT8 (actually kind of rude because multiple callers cause a mess, use an offset) is typically within one cycle of what I've selected, so it's not a common issue. I'd venture proper calibration hasn't been done within that group. If no one else has done that, your mileage WILL vary. This is the most likely reason since phone folks tend to tolerate frequency variations easier than other modes. The other place is to make sure that the XIT (or second VFO) is not engaged. First question is - did you get good frequency readings for the PLL Reference Oscillator range? If it fails, you see a strange frequency reading at the high frequency end (when BAND+ is tapped). Now, the other "funny" thing is that it sometimes checks OK with the internal counter probe plugged into TP3, but fails when the probe is removed. Under those conditions, the PLL and VFO do not lock together So the first thing to try is to solder a 10 to 15pF capacitor between the source of Q19 and ground. Then between a combination of adjusting the red turns on T5 and L30 see if you can obtain the correct R30 voltage. If that is successful, then all should be well. If not successful, get a replacement Q19 from Elecraft. Send the part number and description to pa...@elecraft.com and ask for a replacement. If that does not correct things, then email me and we can go through some other checks to determine the source of the failure. 73, Don W3FPR On 1/18/2019 8:48 AM, K2bew wrote: Don et al, Since I know Don monitors the reflector as well as the support emails, rather than email Don directly I thought I would ask the question on here because I know I always find it helpful to read other peoples questions on here and Don's answer. VFO frequency set at 4000.00 kHz I initially got 3.5 volts and bottomed out L30 to get it to 5.5 volts, and then I over screwed it to try to get that last half a volt and ended damaging it, so, then I carefully took out L30 and put in a new one. I also took out T5 and rechecked all the ends for continuity, rewound the green wire to space it exactly in the middle of the red winding and spaced everything evenly. I confirmed it is the large yellow core, I have 16 on the red wire and 4 on the green (by the way the illustration shows 14 turns of red) . I verified I have R30 as Br-R-Br 120 ohms with both my DVM and by color, and I verified C72 is 271, and I reflowed the solder on both. With a new 4.7 inductor (large slot, no red mark) in L30 I now get 2.75 volts on the left side of R30 to start with and it bottoms out at 4.5 volts (I was very careful to not bottom it out too hard this time and damage this one, and I have already ordered a couple new ones from Elecraft). What else can I do to increase that voltage? Would changing the number of windings on T5 change it enough to get to 6 volts? [Elecraft] K2 VCO Alignment T5 L30

Re: [Elecraft] Sorta OT - assistive technology assistance needed
Quick and dirty solution is to use PC out to one channel of stereo headphones and radio out to the other channel. Then if needed amplify via small low cost stereo amp. -- Sent from: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/ __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
