One of the most common forms of hearing loss starts at the high
frequencies and works its way down with age, but that's far from
universal. When one or more notches develop at certain frequencies, it's
often the result of noise exposure at work.

Re: [Elecraft] Copying CW and Pitch

2021-03-13 Thread Dave Cole

Jim,
Here is an interesting story:

I had a hearing test many years ago, and asked to see the results.
Turns out I had a null at some frequency I don't remember right now, but
it was exactly where I had selected my sidetone to be... My guess is
because I heard less noise there... Anyway--

I re-selected a new sidetone, lower in frequency, and on a small peak...
My CW speed for copy increased probably 10-15%.

Now whenever I get a hearing test, I ask for a copy, and put the
sidetone where my highest peak is, within the range Elecraft allows for
sidetone.

[Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement

2021-03-13 Thread kevinr

Good Evening,

The week began with wet weather.  Perfect for an net search to
follow a hint by K0DTJ.  Brian mentioned the Merlin phone app, which
helps you identify birds.  https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org Part of it
is sound files.  Deeper digging got me to
https://www.macaulaylibrary.org/guide-to-bird-sounds/ which had exactly
the sound files I wanted.  $20 for over 4000 sound files from 900
species of birds in Canada, the US, Mexico, and parts of South America.
It is interesting to notice the regional dialects of a species.  The
local Pileated Woodpecker population may not understand the call from
their Carolina cousins.  This summer I will put a few speakers out this
window and see who I can attract.  Last night the Saw Whet owls woke me
up.  Maybe I should play their tune during the daytime :)

One small sunspot is showing, while the auroral oval is stronger
than last week.  Flux is at 77 sfu.  I expect more noise with deeper
QSB.  However, you never can tell until you try.  I took a hike to check
the growth on the thinned trees.  Along the way I tightened the guy
lines to my antennas.  The winter winds had pulled them upward on the
shrubs they were holding.  When the weather turns sunny again I will
trim the central tree of dead branches.  That will let me raise the
antenna about twenty feet. Then I can test how it works when it is not
behind a wall of soil.  Luckily that is on the western side; off to the
east the way is open well into Washington.  On a clear day that is where
Mt. St. Helens would appear.

Notice the time change.  Same sun angles as last week just one hour
later on our normal clock.

Please join us on (or near):

[Elecraft] New release of Win4K3Suite is available

2021-03-13 Thread Tom
Hello,
There is a new version of Win4K3Suite available. This release has a fix for
cases where the KAT500 is used without the KPA500.

Win4K3Suite is a full featured control program for the K3/S, KX3 and KX2.
It has a built in Panadapter that works with LPPAN and a sound card, as well
as the SDRPlay RSP's. It supports the KAT500, KPA500/1500 and the KXPA100 on
most of the above radios.
A unique feature is that is has 6 built in Virtual Radios, each of which
works just like an Elecraft radio. This allows sharing of a single COM port
with up to 6 applications. It also has a built in HRDLogbook server and the
EiBi Shortwave database.
There are many more features like full access to menu items, a cluster
display using your ClubLog credentials and many more.
You see more information here:
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=win4k3suite
and download a fully functional 30 day trial at va2fsq.com

Re: [Elecraft] QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo this weekend

2021-03-13 Thread Kimo Chun
I cannot vouch if I have this all correct. A local ham contacted one of the
vendors who provided this link. It is the sign-in page for AirMeet.com.

https://www.airmeet.com/event/da5bfe00-5f01-11eb-9af0-f5e009e37ce1

The QSO Today Expo lets you visit vendors but I could find no way to get to
any sessions, only the advertised listings for them.

The QSO Today Expo site allows you to create your own e-ticket based on the
receipt ID you received for your payment. It's weird. When you hit Submit
it seems like nothing happens but the top entry field should change to
E-ticket (in blue and is a link). Click on it.

You enter that 5 digit code when you sign up at the Airmeet site and create
your online meeting ID/avatar, whereupon the emailed Airmeet confirmation
gives you the 6 digit verification code. With that you can get into the
online presentations. However, I can't vouch for the times posted. The LIVE
ones are at the top. Pending (who knows really when maybe they were earlier
-as scheduled but never happened so they weren't technically completed) are
listed in the middle and those Completed are moved to the bottom of the
list of events.

I just monitored/re-scrolled through LIVE ones, so-marked, each hour and
joined them if they were of interest. This included Eric's (added?)
afternoon session. He mentioned tomorrow's. (check early as it will become
Daylight Savings in Pacific Time by then).

I give up keeping track and will look towards viewing others later on
playback. Only if you have specific questions for Eric or others is it
critical to attend. Some ended early and some went long. It's up to the
moderator if meeting attendees stop asking questions...

I hope I got this procedure correct. Apologies if it isn't. I'm not going
through that again... maybe you can see Eric's presentation tomorrow if you
get this in time. Someone will correct me I'm sure.

Good luck,
Kimo Chun KH7U

Re: [Elecraft] Copying CW and Pitch

2021-03-13 Thread Drew AF2Z
My default sidetone pitch is 440 Hz, which is plenty sufficient (for me)
to discriminate between two very close signals signals, if they are not
too unequal in strength.

I am more interested in choosing the optimum pitch for particular filter
bandwidths and QRN conditions rather than for discriminating between
multiple stations. I suppose the wpm speed of the CW signal might also
come into play in optimum pitch selection. This is probably more
complicated than just "lower is better".

I'm looking forward to "live" adjustment of signal pitch on the K4.
Seems to me that adjusting the pitch of the signal would be the natural
final tweak needed to enhance it.

Re: [Elecraft] PSK31 with a KX2

2021-03-13 Thread K8TE
Times change. ClubLog publishes a weekly summary of uploaded DX contacts at:
https://clublog.org/dxreport.html. For this past week, PSK was 0.11% of all
those contacts. This is a representative sample (not scientific) of
activity by those who use ClubLog.

FT8/4 made up about 61%, SSB & CW just short of 38%. This gives us a pretty
good idea of where to find the activity. The summary includes other modes
along with other information. You may not like it, but it is a close
approximation of reality.

RTTY fans (0.69% in this summary) can't believe there are so few operating
RTTY, except during contest weekends. If one picks a mode with such small
numbers, one can't expect to find much activity.

I use multiple radios, one of which is dedicated to FTn. This allows me to
make CW/SSB contacts while the other radio is making FTn contacts. FTn has
filled in a lot of band-slots and even States on 12m toward 9BWAS for me,
with little skill and minimal effort. If one pays attention to FTn details,
one can make even more contacts there. I get tired of clicking. I don't
like to move my hands off the home keys.

Thanks, Dave. The system is in even worse shape than it was last time. I
finally got in by

1. following the instructions to re-generate a ticket - you have to be
careful to enter the original order number, a five character string
you got when they acknowledged your order, in the third field.
2. When it re-generates the "ticket" you click on it and get to a page
with a huge logo, instructions on how to repeat the ticket
re-generation process (don't do it), and some menu items at the top
to go to exhibits, auditorium, etc.
3. DON'T LEFT-CLICK the menu items - that puts you in a loop back to
re-generate the ticket. Instead, RIGHT-CLICK the link which pulls
down some choices and select Open in a new pane. That works, at
   least for me.

Some of the speakers are very fuzzy, others are clear. Most of the audio
is OK. The various windows all invoke different sorts of user interfaces
for the different styles of viewing and interaction. It's all similar to
Zoom but not quite the same and there are many flavors. YMMV.

Re: [Elecraft] Copying CW and Pitch

2021-03-13 Thread Dave Fugleberg
Jim, that’s an interesting bit of information. Is that the case even for
people who have excellent hearing at higher frequencies? In other words,
would people with excellent hearing at higher frequencies also benefit from
using a lower frequency side tone?

As a retired designer of large sound systems, I had to learn a lot about
acoustics and psychoacoustics (the science of how humans' ear/brain
interprets what we hear). That science tells us that, like most of our
senses, hearing is logarithmic both with respect to frequency and
loudness. This means that our discrimination of one frequency as
compared to another increases with decreasing frequency. That is, we are
better able to separate signals from each other with RX pitch set to
lower frequencies.

Re: [Elecraft] QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo this weekend

2021-03-13 Thread Dave Fugleberg
Hopefully they'll sort it out and come up with a way for latecomers (like
me!) to register to get the replays. I had not planned to attend this
weekend for various reasons so did not do the 'early bird' registration.
This morning I checked the speaker list and saw a few sessions that sounded
interesting. The website indicated that the sessions will be available
until mid-April, so I thought I'd register 'at the door' so to speak, and
watch them over the next couple of weeks.
However, the registration page has not been updated for 'at the door'
sales. Then I saw all these emails about problems with tickets and such.
So, I think I'll wait and see if they get it sorted out.
I attended the inaugural virtual expo last year, and it was pretty well
done, so I suspect this is just teething problems with the new ticketing
system.
Hope the ticketing issue doesn't leave Wayne and Eric all alone in their
booth waiting for customers that can't get past the gate!

Looks like the added K4 Q&A session on the virtual hamfest that Eric mentioned
earlier for 4:00pm EDT today didn’t make.

There’s another one on the calendar for 9;00 am PDT tomorrow.

Re: [Elecraft] March/April NCJ

2021-03-13 Thread Dr. William J. Schmidt
I had a similar thing happen after purchasing an antenna switch of well-known
brand. I didn't try the switch before it went to the top of the tower but I
quickly found that one position had a bad relay. I was able to use another
position to get the thing working. I posted on eHam and rated it below average
in quality because I expected a switch... something so simple... to work out of
the box. I quickly received an email from the manufacturer berating me,
suggesting it was my fault for the switch failing for being just another dumb
ham (yes, for a simple 12V switch), and that my review would "ruin his
business". This went on for some time, but I did not bend to such rude tactics
in favor of the truth. I also commented that the kick-back diodes were, in my
opinion, at tower end where they are not easily serviceable after static
discharge (this was not the problem causing the box to fail).

Evidently this has become common-place.

I bought a European made tri-band Yagi antenna from a friend who had never
installed it. (I won't mention the manufacturer) It was still in the unopened
box after sitting in my friend's garage for some time. The pieces of tubing
were shipped inside each other (graduated metric sizes have a lot of clearance
between sizes) and when I extracted them all I found two pieces for the same
element were very corroded. I used my household lye/vinegar method to clean
them up and assembled the antenna. It worked fine and I decided to write an
eHam review.

Based on the QC issue I rated it a four stars. I almost immediately got an
email from the company in which I was accused of improperly storing the antenna
and all sorts of other things. It was also claimed that anything less that
five stars would ruin their business, etc. I sent photos of the tubing and
heard back that this was impossible, it's never happened before and so on and
so forth. I got so much grief about this that I wrote the reviews people at
eHam and asked them to pull my review, which they did.

I was warned that Yelp has that same problem. 1) I've been told eHam is
the same, I've never posted a review as a result.  2)  About all the
Yelp reviews seem to be good for is identifying that a business is closed.

Re: [Elecraft] March/April NCJ

2021-03-13 Thread Wes
I bought a European made tri-band Yagi antenna from a friend who had never
installed it. (I won't mention the manufacturer)  It was still in the unopened
box after sitting in my friend's garage for some time.  The pieces of tubing
were shipped inside each other (graduated metric sizes have a lot of clearance
between sizes) and when I extracted them all I found two pieces for the same
element were very corroded.  I used my household lye/vinegar method to clean
them up and assembled the antenna. It worked fine and I decided to write an eHam
review.

Based on the QC issue I rated it a four stars. I almost immediately got an email
from the company in which I was accused of improperly storing the antenna and
all sorts of other things.  It was also claimed that anything less that five
stars would ruin their business, etc.  I sent photos of the tubing and heard
back that this was impossible, it's never happened before and so on and so
forth.  I got so much grief about this that I wrote the reviews people at eHam
and asked them to pull my review, which they did.

A CW sidetone pitch of 400 Hz is consistent with what little research there

Re: [Elecraft] QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo this weekend

2021-03-13 Thread Grant Youngman
Obviously the Virtual Hamfest is having some issues.

I was always able to get to everything except the lobbies and booths. Got an
email last night, instructing an email to supp...@qsotodayhamexpo.com if there
was an issue. Did that. Received a reply quickly that it was fixed. But it
wasn’t. Reset my ticket as indicated in this morning’s email. That didn’t
help either. Sent a second email to the support address this morning telling
them it still wasn’t working. A few minutes later it had actually been fixed.

Apparently some bottom feeder decided to have fun, and, instead of just playing
music or putting up a sweeper over the AM Window, QRM’d the hamfest site with a
DDoS attack, which complicated things even further.

Anyway … it was a good presentation this morning, especially with Eric
indicating they hoped to have Group #1 out the door by the end of May, +/-.
That was encouraging news, especially if you were, like I was, a couple of
months late to the party. I may still live long enough to get my K4D :-)

There is another K4 Q&A session with Eric added to the schedule for 4:00pm EDT
this afternoon.

I agree that a preponderance of 5 ratings are from people congratulating
themselves on their choice, and the text often goes like "this is a fine rig"
or "met all my expectations."

And out of roughly 2,200 eHam ratings I once profiled just for grins, almost

which tells you nothing about the rig itself.

I also agree about the need to look for trends in the comments to find any

I look at the ones by people who are not so satisfied, there is usually
more useful information there. Sure there are the folks that give a 4
rating because "it only comes in black", but if you look for trends you can
often find trends.

Re: [Elecraft] QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo this weekend

2021-03-13 Thread David Herring
I don’t know if this will help or is even applicable to you, but in my case I
was able to regenerate my ticket once I remembered that I paid with PayPal and
that uses a different email than I typically use for ham radio correspondence.
Supplying the billing email resulted in a ticket that got me right in.

[Elecraft] QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo this weekend

2021-03-13 Thread Dave Van Wallaghen
For any of you attending the QSO Today Virtual Ham Expo this weekend
https://www.qsotodayhamexpo.com/
I was scheduled to present a couple of sessions regarding Elecraft's
Classic Line of products with a discussion on buying used rigs and
getting a start in building our kits. There have been a couple of
technical issues, and so at this point, they still have not been
scheduled as yet.

But, I will be working in my shop most of the day, and we do have a
Classic Line Table in the Elecraft booth if you would like to stop by
and chat. I will login to the table with my camera and mic muted, but if
you see our logo with my initials DV at the table, just make some noise
so I know you are there and we can chat about anything you would like
related to Elecraft's Classic Line of products.

Hope to talk with you soon...
