Thanks for the good info Keith - I quit using 12w yrs ago as one E'craft

Also heard from another that I could turn the fans on all the time which

The two Calibration numbers are for all bands!

So; Go into config menu WMTR LP (below 12W) or HP (above 12W). (note 6
meters switches at 8W)!

Make a note of both numbers so you can put them back!
Extreme numbers to get the KPA3 to click in at lower actual power
levels would be to set both for 180 (max).
You will have to use an external watt-meter to see what is going on as
the K3 internal watt-meter readout is all out of calibration now!!
I just played with a radio and it switches over at about 7 watts with
both numbers at 180

Have fun!

Yes, but, that also attenuates receive. I know, not much but I need
every fraction of a db on 80 and 160 for those weak ATNO's. Yes I know I
could switch one in/out but, remoting adds another can of worms,
especially when remoting.

I received some excellent advice from Fabio IK6ZER on the SPE reflector

the K3 back today.

When I first got the amp I made the mistake of running it in the high

warranty repair, and was an expensive lesson learned.

Over the  course of the 3 yrs. that I've owned the amp,  I have blown 4
LPA's in the K3 running it at 8-11w. With latest repair the tech
informed me that the "LPA is not rated for continuous duty at upper
power levels (like the digital Modes)" They suggested running 13w vs 11w
so the LPA wouldn't be used. If I do that it over-drives the SPE in the
mid-range.

What is my suggested recourse?

Use a USB port on the computer, not on a hub.

I am officially a serious geezer with hearing aids now. However, I am
having a problem getting a "streamer" device working with my K3.
Supposedly it can be connected to the headphone output and it will
transmit audio via Bluetooth directly to my hearing aids. It works fine
when I plug it into my computer's phone jack, but when I connect it to
the K3 -- either the front or rear phone jacks or the speaker jack or
even the Line Out connector -- the audio is very weak and distorted.

The device is a Resound Streamer II. Has anyone used this or something
similar successfully? More to the point, any idea why it doesn't work?

not operating. After a few minutes the K3 totally shut down. This had
nothing to do with the transformers under test; I get the same result when
running the KPA500 at 200W directly into the dummy load. After restart the
K3 shows no sign of problem unless the 200W endurance test is run again.
Then I increased power just a little bit so that the 100W stage kicked in. I
got 300W out of the KPA500, and now the K3 keeps going without shutting
down. I can see how 12W may be a bit much for the driver stage, but if so,
shouldn't the 100W stage kick in sooner? Also, I expected the K3/KPA500
combo to be able to produce any power level I wanted within its range. What
I see is that when the 100W stage kicks in, the output (as seen on an analog
meter) makes a big jump so that certain power levels cannot be achieved.

That delay is stated to "cover all bases" to include weekends.

There are several reasons.
First, there is simply the time to assemble your order and ship it.
Second is the time to process your order and get the paperwork from sales

Thirdly - yes, you order will be run through a final test before shipping.

Other delays may be possible if some part of your order is not currently
in stock, and in that event you will be notified and you will be asked
whether to ship-now, or hold until everything is available.

Shipping time is not included. Normal orders ship UPS Ground, and if you
are not in-state for California, UPS can take another 5-7 days to arrive.
If you are in a hurry, choose USPS Priority Mail and it will take 2 to 3
days.

line to the remote switch.

My station: At the moment I have an
Ameritron RCS-8V remote coax switch. I
also have a remote ICE Model 516 antenna
switch.

I use the ICE to switch between the
triband or the Ameritron controlled
antennas.

The Ameritron is controlled by 350' of CAT
cable, hardline is from the house to the
switch. My Ameritron controlled antennas
are wires in trees, I also have a
tribander which when I use it, I manually
switch. All the antennas are tuned so
there is no tuner other than the one in
the K3s.

I select the desired antenna thusly:

160M - 160 wire
80M --- 80 wire
40M --- 40 wire
30M --- 30 wire
20M --- 20 wire & tribander
17M --- 80 wire
15M --- 40 wire & Tribander
12M --- 80 wire & 160 wire
10M -- 160 wire & Tribander
6M 160 wire & Tribander*

* I have a homebrew addition of W1ZR's 6M
passive elements added to the tribander.

There are two transmit coax that exit the
house; one to hardline leading to the wire
antennas, the other is to the tribander.

So here's the dilemma... I'm thinking of
replacing the remote Ameritron switch with
one that will automatically switch
antennas as I switch bands, controlled by
the K3s band change. If I decide to switch
between the Tribander or wire, it would be
nice to do that at the touch of a button
but the ICE does a fine job.

My Alpha 77SX is incredibly forgiving and
if I don't make a proper antenna
selection, nothing fails & I correct the
problem & go. I am though considering the
new Elecraft KPA 1500 amp (Do I really
want to sell the SX or not... That is the
question to my getting the new amp...) so
why not make antenna switching foolproof
and get an automatic remote antenna
switch. I would though like to have one
that does not require a control line.

Suggestions, thoughts?

73,

Gary

Richard - I second your report, there is no fine adjustment for the

When the band is noisy, I have to reduce LIN OUT to 01 or
alternatively reduce the overall system gain with the RF gain (which
in the case of the K3 and K3s is IF gain).

When operating meteor scatter on 2M with an Elecraft K144XV
transverter I had to reduce the audio drive from the JT65 software to
50% to prevent RF power out overshoot and hunting, typical in
over-driven closed loop systems. This allowed me to advance LIN IN and
the end result was the power detection system of the K3s settled down.

There are work-arounds.

[Elecraft] Remoteing with the K3 Mini and the 1238 Twins

SPE Expert 1.3k - FA Amp., Green Heron Products for Rotor control and
their wireless remote boxes for switching antennas, and one Remoterig

From the control site (away from home) I will use a K3 Mini, another
Remoterig 1238, and my laptop. I am able to control all my antennas with
a client program from GH thru the internet. Last year I was using a
KPA500 and KAT500 and was using Elecraft's client program to control them.

What I'm wondering is how I can control the HF-Auto and the SPE from the
control site as neither have similar client programs available as the
Elecraft stuff did?

Anyone else with a similar setup?

All you have to do is remove the screws and pull the front panel board
off. There are rectangular cutouts on the bottom which can be used to
pry the front panel off with a screwdriver. The many pins provide a
good grip, so you have to pry it off a bit.

With the K3 (not K3S) you had to remove the left side panel to allow
you to remove one screw from the RF Board to 2-D connector which
interfered with the removal of the Front Panel assembly, but the K3S
has a notch in the board and that step is not necessary.

Many other "Elecraft" designs were done similarly, by someone else, PAs

You don't have to play with that 15 pin acc. or anything else. There is
a program on the Elecraft site that you host to the control site. Just
pecking a button in the program will turn it on/off. I used it for 3

I was hoping that there would be an undocumented way for the KAT500.

It will tune some but not consistently. Turning the RIT/XIT control

VFO A and VFO B respond to turning the knob on the K-POD normally.

With the rocker switch in XIT/RIT position on the K-POD and the K3
RIT/XIT function turned off then the K-POD tuning knob adjusts VFO A
in coarse mode. This is normal for the way I have the K3 programmed.

I assume this must be a bug in the 5.50 beta firmware which I have

As a side note installing the surface mount resister in the K3 is

My ideal scenario would to simply 'Plumb in' the RemoteRig box into my

I guess it comes down to whether all the elements can share the K3 ports of

Is this possible or is this fantasy?

That is not needed ... just use Elecraft's host programs for the KPA500
and KAT500. You will be able to turn them on and off and control them
all over the internet. Did it for 3-mos this past winter down in FL. -
worked like a dream.

to other software that one might use at the control point, and no one
at Elecraft has been able to come up with a solution other than RCForb

hardware, virtually no support and even less in the way of documentation.

Maybe what I'm looking for is simply something that Elecraft can't

At least Flex returns my email.

the time between the button presses on the K3's front panel. Granted, there
may be some time between pushing the appropriate F key in the application
(Wintest). But, this only addresses possibly the initiation delay.

Could some method/application be added to upload an externally generated audio
file, which uses some standard format, into an arbitrarily assigned message? Or,
at the very least, provide a means to change the K3 between receive & transmit
without suffering the delays due to button presses?

For the curious, when running at rates of 300+ QSOs per hour, the delays turn
out to be significant.

As a side note, also not able to record to the M1-M4 message keys on the

One nice thing about remote operation (if the transmitter is really
a good distance from your control position), you can use another
receiver and computer to monitor your data mode signals yourself. A
modest antenna should do OK for receiving your signal so you may be
able to 'sneak it' by the HOA or your building manager. Think

Re: [Elecraft] CQ WPX and the KSYN3A board?

2015-06-03 Thread DGB
I did participate, part time, but weathered thru about 1000 q's.
Received both boards and installed about 3 hours before the contest.

I was amazed how close qrm could be to a weak signal and not affect it
at all. Noticeable difference from the old boards indeed! Plus the rig
seems quieter as well, again great for the weaker signals. A long as the
qrm wasn't on the exact same frequency, I was able to filter them out
to hear the signal of interest!

Nice having a qrm-less rig! Don't have any idea how it would do on ssb.
I won't find out either, being primarily a cw and digital operator!

Highly recommended up-grade! Thanks Elecraft!

Checked my Cantenna today, 78 ohms.

Thanks for all the info on DL's.

I bought a NARDA 40w load with N-connector good to 12.6 GHz for $40
(from a friend on-line).

Yeah I had a 100w light bulb and a Heath Cantenna way back

Now mine mostly made by Bird, NARDA, M/A, Midwest MW, etc. My 500w is
made by Sierra and I paid maybe $50 at a flea market (it has built-in
power meter). SWR is not quite 1:1.00 (1.4 as I recall) - so what.

I use a Phonak accessory called ComPilot that works with my Phonak

to Bluetooth connect to my cell phone on my belt. It also has a 3.5 mm

[Elecraft] 270V ERR KPA500

2014-02-12 Thread DGB
I'm getting this error from my amp when I turn it on and set it in the
OPER mode. Then it requires shutoff via the rear switch to shut it off.
I've been running it off 120v and has been working fine.

What do I need to look for?

Re: [Elecraft] Error message ERR DSE

2013-12-21 Thread DGB
Running N1MM. The transmissions it occurs on are such as short as "W4TV
599 4 4 NS9I", so not long but only occurs when transmitting not on
receiving.

I was running in the rtty TEST today, or trying too!

Only running one cluster and have that filtered so not many spots coming
thru.

What logging software are you running and how long are your
transmissions? The problem appears to be heavily correlated
with logging software that polls aggressively (or users that
are trying to poll from multiple applications at the same time)

runs the K3's control processor and eventually the garbled input
generates a pathological command.

It don't matter if I run full legal limit or no amp with the rig power

I searched the archives and read reference to a DSP problem and
reloaded the firmware several times over the last few weeks. In addition
I saw reference to re-seating the front panel board. I disassembled the
K3 today, did that and most all the other connections.

Same symptoms are there.

Re: [Elecraft] Remote Knob

2013-05-10 Thread DGB
I recently acquired one and think it will be great tool in contesting.
Simple installation. Just connected it in series with my MKII. With it's
8 buttons, it's all configurable to suit u thru a most any simple
terminal program. I put mine right next to the right side of the
keyboard tray, in between the keyboard and mouse, so won't have to reach
for the radio much or think about it much.

have DIGOUT1 configured to ON on the 6m band and OFF on all the other bands.
Nothing is connected to BYPASS OUT. I notice an increase in gain when keying
the RX ANT in when on 6m. There are no sigs on 6m right now so I'm wondering
if it's working correctly.

Can I assume that the PR6 is seeing the 6m antenna thru the tuner and amp?

Unplug the antenna from the tuner and see if the noise level drops.
