 don't
think so. With any typical SSB filter bandwidth, AGC pumping is not a
 practical
issue (it IS a big deal for CW however).

Bill, I'm confused by that first sentence. How can a signal within the
passband NOT pump the AGC?

Normally when AGC pumping is discussed, it's a negative reference to an
adjacent signal that's outside of the passband.

I agree. Although I routinely use 1.8Khz roofing filters in ssb contests, I
doubt they help at all and are probably a waste of money.

What does help to copy a weaker signal in the presence of splatter is to
turn AGC off.

Stewart, you've essentially got it right. The other powerful SO2V technique

switching back and forth and dropping my call in as stations call qrz. Very

Good points, Don. And, Dick, thanks, for the off-list reply.

I just redid them as 160, 80, 40 for 1-3; 20, 15, 10 for 4-6; 30, 17, 12 for

One of the problems with RTTY pileups, as with the other modes, is many
people call endlessly. That makes it difficult, as you won't hear (or see)
just one signal when it's time for the caller to xmit a report.

I'm sure I'm in the minority using this technique, but I've worked RTTY long
enough to be able to recognize the sound of my callsign, CQ and 599 in my
head. Being a high speed CW guy probably helps, too.

When I tune with VFO B in DUAL mode, listening for the responding station,
besides having the display, I listen for 599 599.

[Elecraft] KPA500 s/n 346 on air

2011-09-04 Thread Barry Simpson
I have just completed building KPA500 s/n 346.

It went together pretty well and the initial power on test was OK.

However, I connected the K3/KPA500 cable I had bought and it wouldn't work !

Just a case of RTFM !

Updated the K3 firmware (and the KPA500 firmware as well) and turned on the
auxbus and voila it is working great.

No QSO's yet, just set up the stby and oper power levels and tested on most
bands.

QSO's to come later. Yippee !

Please excuse the grammar.

Yes and no. Perhaps in extremely crowded contests but maybe not for more
casual operating or on sparsely populated bands.

For more casual operating or on sparsely populated bands, the 1.8Khz filters
do just fine for me. After all, it's 95% dsp.

I find the advantages of the narrow roofing filter greatly outweigh any
minor advantage of having a wider cw passband in contests. When running,
they protect me from offending neighbors who would have otherwise ran me off
my run freq, which occurs a few times in EVERY contest - far outweighs the
one or two off frequency callers I might have missed. And in SP, the
narrow filters allow me to hear that weak signal right next to that s9+
running station and give me those dx mults in 160M contests.

I removed the 500hz filter pair that I used to also have installed.

Different strokes . . . .

Re: [Elecraft] Headphones

2011-07-09 Thread Barry Simpson
Hi Bill

I have been a long time user of a pair of Yaesu YH-77STA headphones. They
provide more volume than the various other Sony and Heil headphones that I
have and they are very comfortable to wear.

volume control just about at max most of the time, with RF gain also at max.
One of the headsets I use, is an old RS “HI-FI” pair that cost $40. way
back when, and yet, are less sensitive than my Sony ear buds. Also, for
some reason, the RS headset must have a low freq. cutoff near the 600 Hz
side tone, as I get more of a “thump” than a sine wave tone out of them. The
Sony ear buds, work better, (more volume than the RS ones, even without my
aids in) , and the side tone sounds better, than the RS “HI-FI” headset,
but, still less than the built-in speaker.

Does anyone have any experience with the “communications type headphones
sold by AES and other ham radio dealers, or that advertise in QST, CQ, etc.?

Would appreciate any guidance or advice from someone who’s “been there”.

There are two major problems with turning off the K3's AGC:

 1. There is very little dynamic headroom until the AF Limiter
causes severe distortion on even a moderately loud signal, even
if the AF Limiter setting is max.

That's not necessarily true, although probably true with most headphones on
the market. Assuming non-impaired hearing, the effective dynamic range will
be highly dependent on your baseline (ambient) noise level and subsequent
gain settings. That's why K3NA strongly emphasized the need for high
isolation headphone schemes in his original treatise on AGC-less contesting.
The higher the isolation, the greater the ability to hear low audio levels,
the lower the needed gain setting, and the greater the dynamic range before
onset of distortion/clipping/painfully Loud levels. With the highest
isolation schemes, distortion/clipping rarely occurs while the weakest
signals are still rendered audible. I know that in-ear type phones (ear
buds) can be very successful in this regard, but long term comfort is
suspect. Every over-the-ear headphone I've tried so far that was touted as
high or extreme isolation didn't quite deliver the degree of isolation
that was hoped for, and weren't any better than my Sennheiser HD-280. I'm
still searching for more isolation without compromising comfort.

[Elecraft] Receiving/transmitting into an empty antenna jack

2011-06-11 Thread Barry
Decided to listen on 6m today for the first time, ever. Heard a bunch
of signals, then tried to tune my multi-band dipole with the ATU.
Seemed to tune, but was erratic, and even worked a few stations in the
contest.

Then, noticed I was on ANT2, which is empty. Switched to ANT1 and it
worked much better ;.)

How was it I was able to hear and work anything on (an empty) ANT2?

[Elecraft] K2/100 #6459 alive and well

2011-06-05 Thread Barry Middleton
I would like to thank Gary and Richard for all the help that they gave
me in trying to sort out a distorted audio problem on transmit that I
had with my K2/100. I did not seem to be able to resolve the problem, so
looking at the list on Elecraft's Website of Hams in the UK that might
be able to help me I contacted Dave G3TJP. He said he was willing to
have a look at it for me so I took it to him, to cut a long story short
Dave found several problems and was able to sort them out for me. There
is one outstanding fault but it is not affecting it's operation, that is
I have lost the voltage/current measurement caused by a damaged MCU on
the control board also CP U3. I will replace these items at a later date
to bring it up to full spec. So thank you Gary, Richard and Dave and any
others I have forgotten for all the help. I know of no other Amateur
Radio manufacturer who offers such a first class support and help
service to their customers.

Not necessarily - if you have a low ambient audio noise floor (isolating

without constant cranking of the RF gain.

Several of us have been evangelists for this for quite some time and you can
search archives/Web for more info. IMHO, listening to a single signal or
tuning the band with a wide audio dynamic range is a much more enjoyable

the one specified (as in my case) ?
How is this supposed to influence operation (normal as well as diversity

How can things be improved, short of buying new filters?

By offsetting the 2.7Khz filter center freq, you may incur some slight
asymmetry in the passband response at the lower and/or upper knee of the
response curve, but the vast majority of the passband will be unaffected.
If noticeable, it will be relatively minor. The other options would be to
use closer matched 5-pole filters or use 8-pole filters.

Like some other threads, I'm baffled by this one. I installed the
KDVR3. I recorded some stuff from my Heil headset/boom mic I got from
Elecraft [iC element I think, plugged into the back jack] without
messing around with any of my audio settings. I played them back in TX
TEST mode, and they sounded like I sound to myself in the monitor audio,
including audio levels. I played them for a nearby buddy and talked to
him. He couldn't tell the difference. In the WPX SSB last weekend, I
got 3 unsolicited Great audio reports, one from 9K.

I have my TX EQ set as Jim, K9YC, has posted here several times, strong
low cut and moderate high boost. I'm nearly deaf, so I have my RX EQ
for SSB set to try to approximate the shape of my digital hearing
aids. It doesn't have near the gain they do, but it does help. I have
recorded off-the air [same buddy], and played it back to him on the air,
both with my normal TX EQ and with it flat. He can definitely tell the
 difference.

As I said, I'm baffled by this thread. My KDVR3 was literally plug and
play. I first used it in the ARRL SS for the static part of my
exchange and CQ. Several people said [unsolicited], nice to hear
recorded audio that sounds like you do. If there's a separate gain
control for it in the latest firmware, that's OK, I'll just ignore it.

[Elecraft] Paddle input with Y connector OK?

2011-03-27 Thread Barry
Is there any reason I shouldn't make a Y connector so my CW paddle can
be input to the K3 and another radio (or external keyer)? Yes, only one
will be on at any given time.
Tnx,

[Elecraft] Is DVR audio really getting equalized and compressed?

2011-03-26 Thread Barry
I started a thread a week or two ago about lackluster audio from the K3,
with the MH2 mic, as heard on GW4BLE's recording of the ARRL SSB test.
After several responses I am now satisfied with my live audio.

However, as I monitor my audio, the playback via the DVR still sounds
lackluster as compared with live audio.

Questions:
1. Does the DVR playback audio really pass through TX EQ and audio
compression before being transmitted?
2. If so, why does it sound so different from live audio, as I hear it
my headphones in TX Test mode?
3. Is there a separate audio gain setting for the DVR output that I'm
missing?

Tnx,
Barry W2UP

[Elecraft] Received KX1

2011-03-26 Thread Barry Fluxe

I just received my KX1 -with 30/80 meter board and Plug-In Keyer Paddles.

I've read all the posts for the KX1 (they were extremely helpful) and reviewed
the Builder pages - soldering ect .

I plan on doing the KX1 board first and do the tests at each phase and the
alignment.   Install the Keyer Paddles and make a few contacts on 20 and 40
meters.   After I'm sure all is OK on 20 and 40, then I plan to build and
install the 30 meter - 80 meter option.   At this point, I am planning on
winding my own toroids .

Do you have any suggestions for a new kit builder?

Thanks -

Re: [Elecraft] Is DVR audio really getting equalized and compressed?

2011-03-26 Thread Barry
I'm using a subjective term because that is what it SOUNDS like, both in
my monitor and over the air. I don't have a scope, so all I can go by
is PERCEPTION, which is really the bottom line. I'm just trying to
figure out why and how to fix it.

I'd be happy to try it on the air with you, or anyone else willing.

I think a part of the problem is the use of a very indistinct term,
lackluster, which could refer to low volume, frequency response,
desired artifacts of compression, etc. Can you be terribly specific
and technical about what you mean by lackluster?

It has been a measured fact since the middle 20th century, that people
do not hear either highs or lows as well as midrange when the volume
is low. This lead to the addition of a loudness setting in stereo
amplifiers which artificially raised the level of lows and highs to
have the same PERCEPTION of full frequency range at quieter listening
levels. Not surprisingly some found the sound harsh at higher volumes
 when the loudness was engaged.

If you have your monitor level set low for DVR playback, and you have
normal human hearing, you WILL hear LESS highs and lows. Comparison
of two results for sound spread and brightness must be done at
equal volume levels, or your ears will deceive you.

Re: [Elecraft] paddle key training

2011-03-26 Thread Barry
I use the traditional method of dits with the thumb of my right hand. Back
in the paper logging days, I learned to send with my left hand, reversing
the two connections, so dits were still with my (left) thumb. That way I
could write with my right hand at the same time as sending my left hand - a
skill not unlike learning SO2R.

BTW, most modern keyers have a REV command, so you can reverse the dot/dash
paddles without rewiring it, turning it around or upside down.

In my experience, using many paddles over the years, the Benchers are among
the worst. My favorites are N3ZN and Begali. My opinion, of course (and
no financial interest in any paddle mfr.)

[Elecraft] [K3] Lack of audio punch

2011-03-20 Thread Barry
Hi all,
I listened to my QSOs with GW4BLE in the ARRL DX SSB test via his web
applet (very cool!) at http://gw4ble.dxlist.co.uk/index.php

IMO, my audio lacks punch. I'm using the MH-2 mic with comp at 26. TX
EQ settings: -16 -16 -12 0 0 +6 +6 +4.

Any thoughts on how to improve the punch?

My callsign was pre-recorded and stored in the K3 DVR. When listening
thru the MON, live audio sounds much better than the DVR playback of my
callsign. Does recorded audio in the DVR go through the TX EQ filters
either when recorded or during playback? How about compression?

Tnx,

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft at the Orlando ARRL Hamcation this weekend

2011-02-11 Thread Barry Pfeil
I just left the Elecraft booth an hour or so ago and the K-Line (LOVE that
name) did look great with the K3-P3-KPA500 combination bolted side-by-side.
With
the amp at 26 pounds in weight per Eric, I'd guess the whole station comes out
well under 50 pounds . Of course you have to add a DC supply for the K3 but
you
might still get in under 50 lbs overall even with a KAT500R added. IMPRESSIVE!!

I live in Silicon Valley not that far from Elecraft and that's USUALLY where I
see Eric. But I'm in Florida visiting a relative so thought I would check out
the Hamcation. Since Eric wasn't expecting to see me it was fun to see his
little double-take when he did and admitted to wondering for a millisecond if
he
had REALLY just traveled 2500 miles :-) It's a pretty decent show - check it
out if you can,

Subject: [Elecraft] APF measurements: FW 4.17 better results by 2 dB

  Hello all,

Did some measurements on the different frimware versions. This time not
  a BW-plot but I measured S+N/N ratio's.

I have no lab equipment but I have a K3 with dBV measurements, XG2 and
  the stepped attenuator from elecraft.
I measured the difference of the K3 dBV-reading in signal off (=N) and
  signal on (=S+N)
AGC off, mode CW, 400Hz BW and 400Hz Roofing.
RX gain of the K3 has been calibrated with XG2 and the K3 utility.

  This is what I found.

_FW 4.25 and 4.21 (both give the same measurement values):_
At MDS level (stepped att on 20dB to reach this level)
normal 400 Hz BW: S+N/N = 3dB (as expected, hi)
  400 Hz BW + dual PB: S+N/N = 10 dB

Now signal level 6dB under MDS (26dB att instead of 20dB):
  normal 400 Hz BW: S+N/N = 0.5 dB
  400 Hz BW + dual PB: S+N/N = 4 dB

  _FW 4.17_
At MDS level (stepped att on 20dB)
  normal 400 Hz BW: S+N/N = 3dB (as expected)
400 Hz BW + dual PB: S+N/N = 12 dB (THIS is 2 dB BETTER)

Now signal level 6dB under MDS:
  normal 400 Hz BW: S+N/N = 0.5 dB
  400 Hz BW + dual PB: S+N/N = 6 dB (THIS is 2dB BETTER)

There are probably people that can measure this far more better than I
  did with better equipment.
But this is what I can come up with here.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: APF effectiveness

2011-01-25 Thread Barry N1EU

What you're describing (hear signals that aren't even there) sounds to me
like the APF is working just as intended. You're hearing faint ringing at
your sidetone frequency when no signal is present. When a signal is present
and tuned in, it will have precisely that same tone but will pop further out
of the noise than that phantom signal. It just demands a little practice
and patience along with fine tuning.

If someone wants a lower Q APF with less gain, they should try a dsp width
of 50hz without APF.

73, Barry N1EU

Ralph Parker wrote:

I was thinking exactly that myself last night on 160m - no problem with
 the
bandwidth, but I'd gladly give up a db or two of APF gain to reduce the
 ringing.
Because of the ringing, I can hear signals that aren't even there!

Re: [Elecraft] APF ringing

2011-01-24 Thread Barry N1EU

Bob, I'm not sure how you are using the APF but I'll make a few general
comments from my experience with it. The APF is intended for occasional use
only on weak signals that aren't much above the noise level. And when used,
it requires careful fine tuning so that the signal is precisely centered in
the K3 rx passband.

The over powering and ringing is by design, to make it effective in
popping those tuned-in weak signals out of the noise. The APF was never
intended to be left engaged while tuning the band.

The Elecraft Web site says K3's before: about Oct 7, 2008, about S/N 1900

[Elecraft] K3 line out

I've starting using the K3 line out for the first time driving some powered
speakers and really enjoying some great sounds. But I was surprised to find
that with my subreceiver turned OFF, there is no audio on the line out right
channel. I was expecting mono audio with main rx heard through both L R
channels. The subreceiver audio comes through fine on the right channel
when it's turned on.

Can some other folks please check their K3 line out and please let me know
if you hear the same thing? Perhaps this is by design.

No, you need to use the same offset values for the same filter position in
the main and sub receivers. If the marked offsets aren't too far apart, you

I can set all the Filter Offset's in the K3 Utility

Does that mean the KRX3 will work the same as if I had all 8 pole filters,

Prior to the K3, I had an Icom 7800, and before that, an FT1000D.
Shortcomings of the 7800 include a useless APF and crippled computer control
(I forget exact details, but as I recall there were some issues with split
operation and inability to clear RIT from the keyboard, using the popular
contest and logging programs). I loved my FT1000D, but it's getting old,
replacement parts are no longer available, etc. I have no regrets owning
the K3.

For everyone's info, the stock K3 A vfo knob makes a great K3 B vfo knob as
well.

It DOES fit and many of us have matching vfo knobs on our K3's.

A classic, Phil!
I've had solder drop on my leg while wearing shorts, but that was the worst

your post. She didn't get it - though Mr. Happy referred to a toy or

Shrieking and shouting... the blob stuck.

They stormed into my room followed by Mom and Dad.
Sisters friend was first into the room causing her to squeal as she tried

Thereby running into Sis and parents.
The solder was still stuck and still hot.
By parents wanted to call the Doctor...but I had enough humiliation for
one day so my Mom gave me the ointment and that was that.

This seems to come up every year after the ARRL 10M contest. Perhaps an
extra 10dB of i.f. gain on 10M could be programmed into dsp firmware.

However, I understand that some folks are resorting to external preamps for

[Elecraft] APF

2010-12-12 Thread Barry N1EU
It's been a while since the APF has really pulled out a signal for me that
was otherwise impossible to copy. As W4ZV has said, its effectiveness seems
dependent on the band condx (QRN vs signal strengths, etc). This morning
the APF allowed a weak V73QQ to pop out of the noise on 160M. Tuning with
APF is very critical (width is only 30hz) and I use the K3's fine vfo tuning
rather than shift. But yes, APF is still working just fine ;-)

[Elecraft] RFI from computer

2010-12-12 Thread Barry
Was playing in the 10m contest this weekend and had noise (like a dirty,
hashy carrier, similar to TV-generated noise) every 5-10 kHz as I tuned
the band. When I turned my laptop off, it went away.

My laptop is about 4 ft from the radio and about 25 ft from my balcony
dipole. Any thoughts on how to decrease the noise?
Tnx,

Knut, does that Spectrum Lab software allow you to do time averaging for the

[Elecraft] Audio mixer request: A - A and B - B

The keen reader will notice that option 5 equals option 1, and
option 6 equals option 2. This is probably a (cosmetic) bug.

Instead of correcting this flaw by removing options 5 and 6, I would
love to have the following settings for options 5 and 6:
A - A
B - B

This would enable me to implement an elegant AutoHotHey mono/stereo
toggle for my SO2V K3 (people doing SO2R with N1MM may know the
mono/stereo toggle as that what happens when you push the back-quote (`)
key).

I strongly agree. There's a great need for some simple utilities for the K3

Re: [Elecraft] An AGC story

2010-12-09 Thread Barry N1EU
Thanks Don. I just realized that I can do some quick experiments to get my
answer using an XG2's s3/s9 capability and noting audio level increase with
AGC Off and then with AGC On and reducing RF Gain until same audio increase
is accomplished.

An aside to KE7X and W4TV: I too wish we could try experimental firmware
that significantly raised the max AGC THR value.

And to K6LL: Yes, I too fear loss of weaker signals

  Barry,

Without doing any measurements it may be difficult to say precisely, and I
would think there would be a bit of difference from one K3 to another.

However, there is a quick and easy way to accomplish that - note that the
S-meter increases as the RF gain is reduced. So if you want to increase the
AGC Threshold by (say) 3 S-units, disconnect the antenna, and reduce the RF
Gain until you move the no-signal S-meter up by 3 S-units. That should be
 close to your goal.
