[Elecraft] KPA1500 operating posture
I have to temporarily re-arrange my amp table to troubleshoot one of my two amps. The only way to do it is to move the kpa1500to my main desk and place it on its left side with the rubber feet. I know heat rises but once the fans come on it should direct the heatout of the normal top vents. Is this a bad thing to do? We intended to remove this because it resets TX GAIN calibration and other data. This, too, will be handled in a more nuanced fashion under the CONFIG function. Please don't use "Restore Defaults". While the backup/restore routines work, we'd suggest not using these either. CONFIG will do a much better job of managing your backup needs. [Elecraft] KPA1500 display on 28mhz
In the recent 10 mtr contest over the weekend, after just a couple transmissions the display goes berserk and then just displays "28 MH with PWR under that".Then when transmitting the PWR will read anywhere from 1 to 4 digits of the power. It will stay that way until the amp gets switched off then when turning it backon it will do the same thing after a transmission or two. I thought I saw this reported at one time and wonder if there are any explanations of this behavior? It works fine its just the display missing its normal readoutof everything to the right of what is showing. Re: [Elecraft] The ERR 12V Message Question
The problem is in the male and female connectors. I don't think a shorter power cable will do anything. There is no substitute for replacing the connectors. When I had mine act up Elecraft sent me the wrong parts. I had a contest coming up and wouldn't have enough time to get the correct parts. I took the boardout and cleaned the pins (you could see they were discolored and needed replacing). That worked for the upcoming contest and didn't fail all weekend and for 2 or 3 more weeks then the ERR 12v fault returned. I had received the correct partsshortly after the contest weekend and did the replacement. All has been fine since. That was almost two years ago. BillK3WJV p.s. You might want to refer to online blogs about the process, or Youtube videos (if any). Sorry, I don't have the links, but one hint: after you snip the connectors off the board use an alligator clip to grasp the pin stubs for desoldering; it's easier than trying to manage it with a pair of dikes. 73, Drew AF2Z On 07/02/19 21:07, Joseph M. Re: [Elecraft] Silent power supply for a K3s
Somewhere around 1980 I was talked into buying a power supply at a hamfest by my good friend who was a great technician. He told me it was a terrific deal. He was right. I don't remember what I paid for it but I know it was lessthan $100. It was a 56 amp rack mounted Llamda metered supply. The model is an LM G12-M. I believe it weighs about 75 pounds. I used to have it in a relay rack at my old QTH shack. In my present shack I have it sitting on a furnituredolly which makes it easy to roll around on the floor. It sits under my desk. It developed an audible arc when turned on so I leave it on 24 - 7. I'm sure the new cost of it would be pretty high but I'm so glad I followed my friend's advice tobuy it. No RFI and no fans. I apologize, I think. BillK3WJV p.s. I am still partial to tube amps though, hi, but do love my kpa. Hi Charlie, The '7610 is an impressive and capable radio. We have one in our shop and have put it on the air. It's a bit of apples/oranges comparison to the K4, though. Since you asked ... here are some K4 characteristics to consider: * Controls -- The K4's UI is quite different, borrowing heavily from the K3, but with an infusion of versatility due to the 7" display. It has the widest available viewing angle and is very bright. (K4 tire-kickers at Dayton were extremely complimentary about the display, which was gratifying after 200 or so iterations on the concept drawing by yours truly.) There are three multifunction knobs (not just one), each mapped to a semantic group, e.g. "XMIT". Their functions adapt to the current operating mode, etc. On the right side of the radio there are three 400-count, ball-bearing drive optical shaft encoders, for VFO A, VFO B, and RIT/XIT offset. No need to multi-task one or two controls. Bottom line: ease of use. If you do get stuck, there's a built-in help system. * Dynamic range -- The K4 is a direct-sampling, dual-receiver radio in its base configuration. But those in high-signal environments can add the dual superhet module to realize a 20 to 25 dB improvement in headroom (blocking dynamic range) over any radio that is direct-sampling only. This is the same delta as, for example, a K3S vs. any other non-superhet on Sherwood's list. * Portability -- The K4 weighs only about 10 pounds, draws only about 2 amps on RX, and can run down to 11 volts. It will try to drag you off to a Field Day site or remote island if not bolted to your desk. • Remote control -- The K4 comes with remote-control via Ethernet built in. One K4 can controlled by another, or by a tablet or PC. Eric must have demonstrated this 500 times at Dayton and I daresay he's getting good at it. * Modularity -- We segregated the K4's modules in such a way as to facilitate easy update to units in the field if/when new tech becomes available. For example, we could quickly and cost-effectively incorporate a new ADC or DAC. Call it planned non-obsolescence. This the 20th anniversary of the K2, and the 10th anniversary of the K3. Both are still shipping. * Extensibility -- In addition to the HDR module, the user will be able to add a VHF/UHF module, which in turn could morph in the future. This philosophy extends to software as well, given the K4's general-purpose computing module [not Windows]. I like to think of it as our "app engine," limited only by the imagination of our software team and other talented contributors. * External monitor output -- HDMI, not DVI. (To each his own?) * Tuning aid -- The "mini-pan" is one of our favorite features of the K4. When you tap on a signal you don't just get a geometric magnification of the main panadapter's pixels; you get a re-sampled, high-resolution spectral display of as narrow as +/- 1 kHz (varying per mode). This is great for signal auto-spotting and left/right peak search. The mini-pan is per-receiver and can either be turned on automatically or by tapping either S-meter. • IO -- The K4's IO is a superset of the K3's, meaning it comes with all of the analog and control I/O you might need as well as 4 USB ports, Ethernet, etc. * Antenna sources -- There are up to 3 ATU antenna jacks and up to 5 receive antenna inputs. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft IC-7610,
Yeah, the 7610 surely resembles the K4. But how different can you make a rig with 2 vfo's and touch screen very much different looking. Take the top and bottomcovers off each rig and see what's inside and hook each up to an antenna and see how they perform in contest condx copying some weeny teeny signal. There is a reason the 7610 is different than a K4 and it's not only the price. But the 7610 is a decent radio too. It all depends on what you want sitting on your shackdesk. Whatever tames your pileups. The K3 is one of the best radios I have used and am glad I decided to buy it in 2009. I've listened to a lot of radios since 1963. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 PSU mounting position
Interesting. I just told my friend W2irt that it was OK for vertical mounting of the power supply from the several posts on here a few months ago and I thought onewas from Elecraft. Its hard to imagine vertical placement of the power supply being a problem. It never even approaches getting warm unlike the rf deck. Air passing through the power supply is from left to right in a horizontal manner. This means that it will not work properly standing on its side. Seems logical that setting it on the side would restrict the air flow severely. I'd have liked to place mine vertically on its side but did not based on this. Mine sits under the desk on a riser so I did not lose foot space. I've never seen a 10 degree fluctuation but itis regularly 6 degrees and has approached 8 degrees. I only work cw for the most part. I see it all the time when the duty cycle goes up like when contesting and thatis when I start looking at the temp more often so that's how I noticed it to begin with.. I've learned to live with it, at least for the time being, for the following reason. I contacted Elecraft and talked with one of the engineers. Apparently this problem was addressed during early engineering but leave it to me to be the first one toexperience this. He explained that there might be a possible fix for it that would require installing a cap, most likely an SMD type. I would be more comfy with a discretecomponent, hi. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 Fan Noise - Not An Issue
Well said, Don, and I agree. Its not an issue with me either. Even though its my first solid state amp I realize the need to cool it. They're already up to suggestingwater cooling. I think we need to talk about hydrogen cooling, something the radio room on the Enterprise from Star Trek might have, hi. The future firmware change might ease some of the "issues" some may have. Even with that change I will still manually set the fan speed to 2 or maybe 3 duringheavy contesting depending on the situation at the time. I still prefer tube amps like my Acom 2000a but am glad I bought and own the kpa1500. BillK3WJV On Sunday, June 3, 2018, 7:36:52 PM EDT, Don Butler wrote: A post this afternoon refered to KPA1500 fan noise as an "issue" that might need to be addressed. I personally think that is an unfair suggestion. Fan noise with this amplifier is NOT an issue to me. I have made previous comments and have also posted a video on this thread, and if I have given the impression that fan noise is a problem in my shack I apologize, because that is simply not the case. Quite frankly, I think all the hubbub about KPA1500 fan noise is a huge overreaction. The reality is that the fans will NEVER be required in most operating situations. I've had my amplifier for three months now, and it has gotten many hours of use. Typically, with the amp idling in standby as I tune and complete occasional short CW QSOs, the fans NEVER do kick on. And if they do they will rarely rise above Level 2. Levels 3, 4 and 5 may be required during very heavy duty only, and, at least at my station, I cannot foresee that happening more than 1 or 2 percent of the time. I have manually selected level 3 on just two occasions, and have never had to use levels 4 or 5. I personally believe that folks out there are fretting over fan noise that may never occur. IMHO the KPA1500 is a great amp. Amps are going to get hot. The more an amp is put into transmit mode the hotter it's going to get. So it has to be cooled. There's no free lunch. When my amp does get hot enough to require speed level 3 or above I will simply put on my earphones and continue to operate (I use earphones most of the time anyhow). As I mentioned above, in the three months that I have owned this amplifier, I have manually switched to level 3 just two times (once while CQing for hours while running in a CW contest and once when I spent about 30 minutes chasing a DX station in a major CW pileup). To me, increased fan cooling capability is one of the KPA1500's uniquely great features. Yes, the fans create noise, but they also rapidly cool the heat sink (probably better than any other amplifier out there). But folks seem to be more concerned about this noise thing when (I think) they should really be appreciating the KPA1500's superior cooling capabilities. I think we should get over this fixation on noise and just enjoy our amplifiers. As far as I'm concerned fan noise is NOT as issue with the KPA1500. To your questions on the AUX cables, you can actually connect 2 of them in series without a problem. This will give you about 6 feet of cabling. We've tested this with our E850463 cables on a KPA500 and it will work, assuming you don't have a problem with RF in the shack at 1500 watts. The limiting factor in extending the AUX cables is that the high-speed, single-wire AUX BUS system we use in the K3/K3S is extended to the KPA1500 so that the amp can 'talk' to the radio. The increased capacitance of the AUX cables are the limiting factor as extender cables are added. So, plan on a maximum of 6 feet or 2 E850463 AUX cables. Now that was back then and I don't know if there has been any more testing or engineering accomplished. I opted for two cables to let me put the amp where I wanted it. I had seen an article about making a longercable for the kpa500 by AD5X. Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 Fan Noise
After I ordered my kpa1500 back in August I asked that same question to Elecraft. My intent was to make my own AUX cable to put the amp where I wanted. The response was that the AUX BUS can only be so long and it was hinted that about 7 or 8 ft might be the most you should have. Since one AUX cable wouldn'tbe nearly enough I ordered two of them and have the amp where I originally planned to put it. The AUX BUS line is the critical one. It seems everywhere I read within Elecraft Documentation is that standard VGA cables should NOT be used. It certainly would be a way to extend the distance between the K3/K3S and the KPA1500, but still retain the functionality between the two. When the new firmware comes out, and the amp can be controlled by the function buttons on the K3 (PF1-operate/stby and PF2-antenna switch), it would be a sure winner. I run some high duty cycle modes so I notice the fans kicking into speed 3 a lot when the PA temp gets to 68-70 degrees. That setting does a good job of reducing the temp and keeping it from climbing past 73 degrees. I've changed my min fan speed threshold from 0 to 1 to also help. As you have pointed out 1 is barely perceptible and this helps to reduce the amount of time that fan speeds are on 2+. I'd like to have more separation between the K3S and the KPA1500 RF deck to further distance any noise but the KPAK3AUX cable is only about five feet long, it would be great if that were more like ten feet. Since the cable pin out is straight thru I would imagine a DB15 VGA M-F extension cable would suffice? That would put the potential fan noise even further away but have the RF deck still plenty close enough to view. Les, N1SV #113 > Date: Fri, 1 Jun 2018 23:07:20 -0400 > From: "James F. So far for the short time I've had the 1500, I've used it very heavily in WPX CW recently. At constant running , sometimes getting no answers which is probably max duty cyclefor this kind of operating, I never went over about 74 degrees C which kicks in fan speed 3 (I think, hi, I had it manually on 3 anyway in this situation and of course 1500 watts). I am wondering it something similar can be done with the Elecraft KPA1500, perhaps an option like the K-Pod, so that the noise source is further from the operating position? John KK9A Thanks for the offer, Clay. But we actually did extensive thermal analysis of both the heat sink and fans, tested many different fan types and configurations, and did comparative noise testing of the KPA1500 vs. a number of other amps. As you allude to, there's no magic bullet. Heat must be removed, with various physical and electrical constraints to be satisfied. We have some pretty amazing thermal imaging devices that we use to examine heat signatures of electrical components. These were used during R&D, which is how we determined that two LDMOS devices were far better than one for heat distribution. We also used it to evaluate the design of our very large/very thick copper heat spreader. On the production line, we review all modules for hot spots during burn-in and make sure the cooling is working perfectly (onset temperature, air distribution around modules, etc.). Of course supplemental cooling of various types has been used with amplifiers in the past. I believe we have a couple of customers and staff experimenting with this idea, and anything that emerges will be posted here. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to k3...@yahoo.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] 2nd Report
Yeah the fans are pretty noisy especially when CQing without answers which keeps the amp duty cycle high. At least when you get answers the amp has a chanceto cool just a bit and keep it below 70C which is where the hyper drive fans come into play, hi. I'm still happy with the amp for several reasons but I still prefer tube amps.I thought I would have two Acom 2000a's but when I saw the new 1500 I figured I would take the solid state plunge for instant on capability but I still prefer my 2000.Tube amps have the same speed fans no matter how hot and how many CQ's you call. The 1500 sits on top of the Acom quite nicely though, that couldn't happen withtwo Acoms, hi. A friend of mine keeps his amps in the basement with his shack upstairs. He is awaiting his 1500 to return from Elecraft for a repair but I already emailed him and toldhim he definitely would like to remote the 1500 to the basement, hi. I could use the Acom more for running somewhat but I was giving the 1500 a pretty rigorous testover the weekend. I don't know how well noise cancelling headphones will do with the 1500 fans when they start singing over 70C. I keep the manual speed to at least2 while contesting and sometimes 3. While you're at it test how long it takes to reach 60C with and without the modified fan system.I'm comfy with hearing the fans come on and I even set the fan speed to 1 or 2 if I'm in a contest mode. I don't think there's a thing astoo much cooling for a solid state amp running 1500 watts. The brief time I've played with mine it doesn't take too long to get to 60Cif you xmit enough. Good luck. If you are going to depend on those 2 fans sucking hot air out of the amp instead of using the internal fans that push it where it needs to go, I think you arepulling hot air out of the amp and that hot air has already done its damage. [Elecraft] kpa1500 new issue
In the last few days I have made about 21 Qso's with the new amp casually and about 75 Q's in a few contests over the weekend. The first night I had a problem that seemedto disappear. It only happened on 40mtrs. I was xmitting and the power dropped like I went into stby but no indications on the front panel other than the power LED's showinga power drop. I chalked it up to maybe not having things setup right as it hasn't happened again. But tonite I was making some 40 mtr Q's and everything looked normal except the temp was jumping from 6 to 8 degrees low, meaning the temp was climbing normally then itwould fluctuate rapidly down about 6 degrees. If I stopped xmitting the temp was stabile but xmitting it would jump down and back up quickly. And now as I'm typing this postthe temp has gone down to normal but the same thing is now happening. Every time I xmit the temp jumps down about 6 degrees and fluctuates back and forth. I checked on 20 mtrs and it doesn't happen there so either I've got some rf floating around on 40 or there is a problem in the amp. I ran the power down and it happens all theway down to about 500 watts out but only fluctuates about 4 degrees. Just checked on 80 and its OK there. So will look into this tmrw some more. About time, thank you Eric, hi. I contemplated adding to the whines and wishes but decided against it. I think the quote by an NFL player "for who, for what" crept in my head. But I guess while I have the space now to make one comment, no matter what is in any radio on my desk, the only thing I have ever needed isthe main tuning knob, the AF gain, sometimes the bandwidth. That is pretty much it in a nutshell. As long as I have everything else available I justnever really need or use it. I operate so2r with the K3 and an FT1000mp 99% in heavy contesting mode. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 S/N 160 delivered today
Larry The zero just means that the fans are off (manually). You can set the fans to be on at speeds 1 through 5 regardless of temp. They will stay on continually. That said, the fans will operate automatically according to temp. They will ramp up as the temp increases. I think the first to engage is the center fan but youcan easily see this yourself. I did some CQing in the King of Spain contest to get the temp up and test things out. They indeed came on at 60C. I forgetwhere I stopped, I think at 71C, but the fans will come on starting at 60C with the fan speed on zero. I will give it a more robust test this Wednesday during the cwts but that is only a one hour test. During WPX at the end of the month I will probably set thefan speed to 2 to get more cooling power below 60C. When the PF1 & PF2 buttons become programmable I will probably set them to turn the fans on or off.For me a fan speed of 2 is acceptable during a major contest situation even with headphones off which I really never do normally. I did find it interesting tonight to see my shack tv get blanked out on xmit. I only checked 3 bands. TV was ok on 80mtrs but blanked the picture and soundout on 20 & 40 mtrs, hi. That never happened with either of my tube amps. I will look into that at a later date. Good luck with your amp. BillK3WJV p.s. The pwr supply fans run whenever you turn the amp on but fans set at zero no amp fans should be on until 60C. Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 S/N 160 delivered today
I can only give you a half a "duh". The preliminary manual supplied with the amp only gives you the menu description of fan speed and it doesn't really describe the operation. The paragraph in the online manual labelled "Amplifier Cooling" is NOT in that preliminary manual. The half a duh is for the first line of the menu description of "fan speed min".It says the speed varies per temp but after that sentence there is not much of a description. It then says greater than zero all the way up to all fans running, leaving you in the dark. It doesn't explain it like you or Roy explained it. I really figured it would work like you explained but unless you read the online manual you are missing the amplifier cooling paragraph. Thanks to you and Roy for clearing thisup for me. Re: [Elecraft] K3 spurs
If you have an older K3 there was a problem with them generating a spur. I had the problem when a friend reported hearing me on a 2nd freq.I'm guessing nobody still has an older K3 though with this problem. We have determined that a small number of K3/100s and KPA3s left the factory earlier this year (2009) with capacitor C3 installed by mistake on early Revision C KPA3 PC boards. This part location should be empty on Rev. C KPA3s. Installation of C3 causes the PA bias supply to oscillate on some KPA3s at approximately 15-20 kHz, resulting in spurious TX sidebands at that spacing from the carrier. Info is on the Mods & Notes page almost at the bottom. http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_app_notes.htm BillK3WJV On Tuesday, May 15, 2018, 9:30:41 AM EDT, Roger D Johnson wrote: I was watching 6m yesterday and noticed several spurs. [Elecraft] Switching RX ant between ports
All this talk about how great Diversity is had me wondering, but when I try it out I realized I had to move the receiving antenna to the Aux RF jack. The Kady boom mentions using an RF splitter to allow the receive antgenna to be used for both purposes. What have other members of the list used for this purpose? Seems like a fairly broadband, low noise amp would do pretty well. 73 de Chuck, WS1L I use a 2 position switch to send the rx antenna to the AUX or RX ant in jacks. Its on the wall out of the way but easily accessible.I don't even label it. It corresponds to the back of the K3. Left is RX in and right is AUX. [Elecraft] K3 extra xmit frequency
A friend of mine (100 miles away) recently noticed a dual signal being transmitted from my K3 possibly coming to lightsince I went to high power. The problem has surfaced when I xmit on 40 & 80 (don't know of other instances). Thereis a duplicate signal 18khz lower on cw, reduced of course but pretty loud. The first cw character starts out with a chirpbut cleans up after the transmission begins, but still seems like its not a pure signal according to my good friend. RADIO HISTORY: added the 2nd vfo, synth boards, newer dsp board, newer kio3 also had a K4 tell me I had strong dual signal in a recent contest (not sure but might have been on 20 mtrs) Any ideas on the cause(s)?? BillK3WJV p.s. sure would be nice if I had one of my S line rcvrs operating to gain possible causes right in the shack! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] (OT) Touchscreens
Not sure why I needed to know about an Icom 7300 and am guessing it has a touchscreen. Leave the touchscreens to the smart phones, IMHO. If I had a smartphone I wouldn't have a problem with its touchscreen. I have 3 laptops and have mice for all of them, can't stand touchpads either. Radios should have knobs, buttons, and switches. I feel confident that Elecraft wouldn't go there. Let Icom and whomever else make a radio with a touch screen. 73Bill K3WJV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
[Elecraft] QSK and the K3
When I first got my K3 in 2009 I thought the QSK was fabulous and used it every so often. Then for a few years I was working too much and wasa little inactive. I finally retired and heavy into ham radio once again. I got the KXV3B for the preamp and had to jump from version 3 somethingmcu to version 5, and now have version 5.29. Has anybody else thought the QSK to be "slower"? I am performing some tests recommended byElecraft to see if I have a problem but am looking for opinions from other users.
