My mouse is a MX Master 3S for Mac - same as for keyboards, they probably make
other 3 channel mice. The only thing I don’t like about the mouse is that the
channel switch is on the bottom. I rarely change channels so it’s not a big
deal.

Both are USB rechargable. They may work connected direct via USB - I’d have to
check. I always find the wireless operation more convenient.

Re: [Elecraft] A hat was saved (totally apropos of nothing)

2022-03-29 Thread Bob Schwerdlin

Wow!  At least you got a hat with your radio.

I put down my $1500 deposit on a K4 at the 2019 Hamvention and waited
almost 2 and a half years to finally receive the radio.  My very first
Elecraft purchase ever.  When Madelyn emailed me to say the radio is
ready to ship, I asked for at least a K4 lapel pin button, like the ones
given away at that hamfest, or possibly a baseball cap to be thrown in
with the shipment.  The radio was shipped with nothing but exactly what
I ordered.  I guess I should be pleased with that, after the EXTREMELY
LONG WAIT.  Unfortunately, I was never made aware of any K4 lapel pins
while at that hamfest, and it was never mentioned and I never saw anyone
handing them out. I was kinda disappointed.  I realize it was not all
Elecraft's fault.  So many issues came up during that wait period, but I
also feel like the radio was announced and sold before it was truly
ready for production.  All that money and EXTENDED wait, and not even a
"Sorry about the long wait... here's a little token of our
appreciation"  That would have been appreciated.

Flame off.

I can remember, shortly after SSB appeared on the ham bands that "ALC"
showed up and was immediately inducted into that top category of things like
canned beer and sliced bread. It would reduce the dynamic range of your signal
and fill out your RF envelope...
Maybe I'm not well-versed in today's whiz-bang technology, but to this old
sound engineer this sounds suspiciously like compression.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction

For me, the best noise blanker was on my old Drake R4C.  That thing
worked GREAT!

I find both the NB and NR on my K3 to be moderately underwhelming, not
sure why.  Ignition noise used to predominate in urban and suburban
areas and blankers like the one in the 75A4 were very effective.  I
don't know what Detroit did, but I haven't heard ignition noise in
years.  A general rule of thumb has always been to use blanking in
wider bandwidths which sort of makes sense I guess ... the blanking
pulses consume a smaller fraction of the overall signal passband.  My
understanding of the K3 NR is that the DSP processor tries to build a
matched filter around the signal on the fly.  It may be a bit too much
for the algorithms, I've never had much success with it on broader
noise such as power mains hash.  Backing off the RF gain seems to be
more effective.

The best noise reduction I've ever encountered was on the receivers in
the transportable AN/TRC-96 2.5 KW HF ISB system back in the 60's.  3
voice channels and 16 TTY channels on the 4th. Don't remember the mfr
and don't know how they did it but you could literally make noise
disappear with minimal effects on the signals.

Lots of good advice here. A major problem with the K3 NB is the way
it is described on screen and in the manual. There are two blankers,
one ahead of the crystal roofing filters, one after them. Each has
multiple tweaks. In contest conditions, I've found good noise
reduction from using the one AFTER the roofing filter, and set for
the greatest depth and shortest time. I THINK it's called the DSP
Blanker.

Yes, by their nature, NBs will modulate signals by the noise.

Let's hope the NB in the K4 is better.

Re: [Elecraft] K4 or K4D

2021-11-06 Thread Bob Schwerdlin

My situation is similar to Dave's.
I live on a suburban lot 70' x 140' but only have dipoles at the
moment.  I purchased a K4F (base K4) and have no regrets.  Although I
still have my FT-1000D and may try for SO2R at some point in the future,
the base K4 is perfectly adequate.

My question is this:  Does the K4D have a real advantage over the

Re: [Elecraft] K3 / WSJT-X Delayed Transmit

2021-10-12 Thread Bob Schwerdlin

The current version of hamlib is, 4.3

I had similar delay of TX issues with my FT-1000D and WSJT-X on Linux.
After I updated to hamlib 4.x from version 3.3, my issues went away.
Additionally, all the current rigs were updated in the library.  Note,
they are all now four digit radio codes, whereas version 3.3 was mostly
three digit radio codes.

Hi Folks,

Wondering if someone on the list might be able to solve this one.
I’m using a K3 and while CW is my main passion, I do dabble in FT8
occasionally. I’ve noticed that the radio does not start
transmitting right at the start of the 15 second FT8 cycle. It will
start anywhere from 2 - 5 seconds into the cycle. I can’t help but
think that is not a good thing and could be the cause of an
occasional missed QSO. I DO make QSOs but this kinda bothers me.
The audio signals are delayed this amount of time, as is the red TX
light coming on - I am using VOX . Same thing happens when I press
the TUNE button - it takes anywhere from 2-5 seconds for the rig to
go into transmit mode.

I really doubt it is due to computer overload, as the only
applications running are WSJT-X, MacLoggerDX (my logging program),
and JT-Bridge  - all other applications have been ended. Since this
happens when I press TUNE, that pretty much eliminates JT-Bridge
and MacLoggerDX as the cause. Some hardware and software specifics:

Mac mini, 32 GB RAM, 3GHz processor, 6 cores, Intel Core i5.
Mac OS Big Sur 11.5
WSJT-X 2.4.0
Audio Interface: Tascam US-125M external USB device
Values in the DT column are consistently about 0.1 - 0.4

Wasn’t sure if I should post this here or on the WSJT-X list, but I
thought I’d start here. Any ideas?
