[Elecraft] Fwd: Need a logger recommendation
-- Forwarded message - From: Brian F. Wruble Date: Wed, Dec 22, 2021 at 4:20 PM Subject: Need a logger recommendation To: DX List , DX Reflector I have been using CommCAT (by Howard, W6HN) for at least 15 years. I have been a beta tester. It has one feature that really set it apart. Every time a DX spot appeared that I needed for a new bend, mode, both, grid, etc., CommCAT could send a text message or an email to my iPhone. W6HN has stopped supporting the program, and the text alert function is gone. Can anyone recommend a good logger that includes some kind of alert via text or email when a spot appears for one I need? Thanks. Happy New Year to all. 73, Brian, W3BW -- *Brian F. Wruble, C.F.A. The Conch Republic "We seceded where others failed." -- *Brian F. Wruble, C.F.A. [Elecraft] No sub-receive after repair
Hi all: I recently sent my K3 back to Elecraft for repair. I had attempted to install the new KAT3A, and I messed up the subreceiver, and I lost my output power. I also had them install the new KXV3B so that I could have the built-in 6 meter preamp. Elecraft returned my rig, received yesterday, and cautioned me to use the new config files they had set up. I am finding that I cannot get signals on the sub-receiver. Here is my setup: KRX3 Ant = BNC (same as before the repair) KXV3B = Nor L - Mix - R = A b KAT3 = byP (I use the KAT500) SPKRS = 2 SPKR + PH = YES SUB AF = bALAnCE I find that if I load my last saved config file, before the mods, the subreceiver works fine --- I can rotate Balance and move the sub-receive audio to my right earphone, keeping the main receive audio in my left earphone. This is obviously a config problem, and I don't want to keep using the old config file because it doesn't recognize the new KXV3B.. I am just now getting ready to install these. Does anybody have advice on the best order to install them? Or any cautions, lessons learned, etc.? Tnx. 73 de Brian W3BW Brian F. Wruble, C.F.A. [Elecraft] KAT500 "Bypass SWR"?
My KAT500 utility program shows the tuned VSWR, generally a low number, and it also shows "Bypass SWR". Is that a reading of the feed line SWR without the tuner in the circuit? Re: [Elecraft] Logging Programs
Try CommCAT. Www.commcat.com. I have been a beta tester for years, and it keeps getting better. It integrates beautifully with the Internet. LOTW uploads are very easy, as are downloads of QSL info from LOTW. It works well with my K3 and my rotor. It has very detailed packet spot alerting, so you can get quick info about which spots you need to work for new bands/modes, etc. Howard, W6HN provides fabulous support, fixes bugs quickly, and is always upgrading capabilities. 73 de Brian W3BW Brian F. [Elecraft] Selecting Antennas via Band Decoder
My K3 is connected to a TopTen "Band Aide" band decoder. It works great for selecting antennas based on the band. I would like to be able to select a different antenna depending on *where* in the band I am operating. To be specific, If I am operating at 3500-3600, I want to select a dipole tuned to the bottom of the 80 meter band. It needs to tell the TopTen to select 80 meters, which is what it does now. If I am operating in the range 3601-4000, I want the TopTen to be told to select a different dipole, one tuned to 3800. The K3 needs to tell the TopTen to select some unused band which I can then rig to select the relay for the dipole tuned to 3800. Is there a way to set up the K3 to do this? I have been able to accomplish this by selecting different antenna outputs at the KAT500, but what I really need is a way to tell the TopTen to select different relays at the base of my tower. Changing antenna outputs at the KAT500 requires a separate cable run to the tower. I am sure this must have been covered at one time, but I can't find the right thread. [Elecraft] Strange "Ticking" sound with K3/0 Mini to RemoteRig for remotely controlling K3.
Hi All: The symptom I am describing persists despite changing routers, internet systems, and cities. In a QSO this morning, the other parties reported a ticking sound on my transmitted signal --- faint but noticeable --- and I could also hear it in XMIT Monitor. I was operating my remote gear as a test --- in the same room as the K3, and on the same LAN. I have now set myself up 110 miles away, and the sound persists. I am able to work others, get good signal reports, but I can hear the tick tick tick, about 2 per second. In testing, I find the sound is there even if I power down the gear --- the radio and the control end. It persists if I remove 12VDC from the K3/0 mini. Also if I remove the wifi module from the RemoteRig control box. If I remove power from the RemoteRig, it goes away. With power to the RR, the ticking goes away if I unplug the "TTL" line from the K3/0 mini. Unplugging the other lines makes no difference, though it becomes fainter if I unplug "Aux/Mic." It persists if I remove the ethernet cable connecting the RemoteRig to my router. It persists if I unplug the USB line from the RemoteRig to my PC. This symptom appeared after a good period of time when everything worked. And all functionality is still there --- just this maddening tick tick tick --- like something from Edgar Allan Poe. All ideas gratefully accepted. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] Copper Sheetin g Suppliers?
Hi all: I am recovering from a lightning event at W3BW on Maryland's Eastern Shore. I have lost 3 PolyPhaser 1S-RCT. These units have become hard to find and incredibly more expenseive than in 1999 when my tower went up. I have decided to try using an Array Solutions ASD-16SP which protects 16 lines. All of that is a lead-in to my question. The mounting approach for the AS-16SP is different from that for the PolyPhasers. i need to find some thick copper sheet that I can bend to fabricate the mounting I need. Can anyone recommend a supplier for copper sheet --- maybe 1/8" to 3/16" thick --- and available in sizes of about 1ft. by 4" or bigger? Thanks. BTW, The PolyPhasers protected all my remote relay lines --- those relays are cheap and in the base of the tower. I did not get the same protection for the rotor lines --- lost my Orion rotor --- expensive and at the top of the tower. Oh well 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] Lightning Damage at W3BW
Hi guys: Lesson learned! I should not be attempting remote ops to my station on Maryland's Eastern Shore during the summer months. We get lightning strikes, and I got creamed a couple weeks ago. Everything was hooked up, and I am now having to replace my Orion 2800 rotor, and repair or replace my Green Heron RT-21 rotor controller, my TopTen band decoder, my Alpha DAS band decoder and some PolyPhaser lightning protection gear at the tower. The PolyPhaser failed to protect the rotor, and the rotor and relay lines from the tower run 350 ft. to my house. I needed protection at both ends. I will be a long time coming back from this. Now for the Elecraft part of this long whine... The good news: The K3 and the KPA500 survived. The bad news: The KAT500 is not behaving. It is not going through its normal tuning cycle, and the one or two times it did, into a dummy load, it left all the SWR lights on. That is not normal. if the K3 shows SWR= 1.1, the KAT500 should show the same. I can connect to the KAT500 from the PC using the KAT500 utility program, and that is all normal. I loaded in the last set of good parameters. This made no difference. Anyone have any troubleshooting steps to suggest? And, my W2 Wattmeter is completely dead, no lights at all. Or only a brief flash of all the top line of yellow lights, and then nothing. I cannot talk to the W2 using the utility program. I have no idea if the directional coupler survived. Same question --- where do I begin? I will try to send both to Elecraft for repair, but if there is something simple I can do here, that would be great. Thanks for any help you can provide. 73 de Brian *Brian F. [Elecraft] RemoteRig WiFi Puzzler
Hi all: I have been successfully using RemoteRig along with a K3/0 and my remote K-Line at the main station. This is a superb line-up of gear, and I have complete control over the K-Line as long as the internet is good at both ends. I have added the WiFi card to the control-end RemoteRig (RRC-1258 MkII with latest firmware.) At first, everything seemed to work normally. I could go into the RemoteRig using the Microbit Setup Manager (ver 1.20), go to the "WiFi" tab, select the "Setup" tab, click on "Scan", and all WiFi networks in my vicinity would pop up. I could select one, fill in the password, the RemoteRig would connect to it, and I could then access the RemoteRig using a browser on the same LAN by going to the right ip address --- in my case 192.168.1.169. At some point, things changed. The Microbit Setup program scan now show only "x" where previously it had shown the name of a Wifi access point, on my local LAN. I assumed that something had gone wrong with the RemoteRig WiFi adaptor, so I swapped in one from another unit --- same result. Then I tried typing in the name of my LAN, even though the scan showed only "x", and the password. I was immediately connected to my network. If I then go to the RemoteRig using my browser, and ask for a WiFi scan using the browser window, all broadcasting WiFi routers show up, complete with names, signal strength and the kind of encryption they are using. To add to my confusion, I moved the whole thing to a different home, in another state, and it worked as before. So, in NJ, my RemoteRig WiFi scan shows me names of Wifi signals available using the Microbit Setup software. In MD, where is used to show the same, now I get only "x" next to each WiFi signal being received. This is surely something to do with my network and router setup in MD, but I cannot figure out what it is. My iPad and my iPhone both "discover" all available networks. The RemoteRig WiFi adaptor does the same if accessed through the browser, but comes up with only "x" when accessed through the Microbit Setup Manager. Not a big problem, but I am very curious as to why this should be the case. Any ideas? 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] K3 Encoder Knob installation?
Hi all, For reasons unknown, one of the small encoder knobs (E980088 for the high cut filter on the front panel of my K3) broke. Elecraft very kindly sent a few spares. I checked the manual for installation instructions. They are just supposed to be pushed on --- lining up the flat part of the shaft with the flat part of the inside of the knob. For whatever reason, i cannot get the replacement knobs to go on --- or at least I am afraid of damaging the encoder because of the force needed. All of the replacements they sent look the same, all look right. The replacement is sitting about 3/8" higher (further from the panel) than the others. Any advice? 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] KRC-2 Possible Lightning Failure
Hi all: I have had my K-Line (K3, KPA500, KAT500, P3) all working brilliantly, both local and remote using my new K3/0 Mini. While I was away, a severe electrical storm passed through the QTH in Maryland. I returned, moved cables around to get local operations geared up. The KRC-2 band decoder seems to have failed. I have 5 volts after the voltage regulator, U3, but I cannot get 12V at any of the "high side" driver outputs on J6, J7, J8 and J9. The unit communicates with the configuration program, and I have firmware version 1.6. I have re-loaded the firmware. What should I try next? Tnx es 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] CW for K3 Using Navigator Interface
Hi all: I have just returned from our 1/2 year in Key West to the Maryland summer QTH. I successfully ran using K3/0 and RemoteRig controlling the MD K3 all winter. I now don't seem to be able to get back to my usual configuration. I have everything working except CW keying using the ACC line. My paddle keys the Navigator --- the CW light on the Navigator blinks, though I seem to have no side-tone. Using any of my logging software options, I also have the Navigator keying. However it does not key the K3. I have set WinKey PTT on the Navigator to On. I am sure this is operator error, but I can't figure it out. All suggestions appreciated. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. If it doesn't work successfully by itself, chances are great that the two won't work together! When doing the Microbit setup, 4 Virtual Com Ports were created (Com0-3) for Remote Rig to use, and were tied in to specific hardware ports in the computer. You should go into Device Manager and write down the 4 comport pairs- you will need this info. If your comport numbers for the 1st 3 comports are less than 8, you're all set, otherwise you need to make all but the FSK comport to be 8 or less. Radio CAT for RR Control Unit 1. Connect DB9 cable direct from computer to radio. Choose a comport that is NOT in use as a virtual comport. For my K3, I use Com1 (a real hardware comport) and 38400N81-Off-Off; make sure the radio control works. 2. Unplug RS232 Cable from computer to K3, and plug it into RRControl Com1. 3. Plug in RS232 Cable from RRControl Com2 to K3. 4. Radio Control through the Computer should now work- verify. CW Keying 1. Connect the USB cable from a USB port on the computer to the RRControl. 2. Using one of the virtual comports you identified, config N1MM using the computer Com port number; in my case, Com 3 was the comport I used, and it was tied to RR Com0. In N1MM, I configured Com3 for "CW/Other", and set "DTR to CW". 3. Open a browser and go to the IP for the RRControl box. Under IO settings, make "USB DTR as CW" to be "COM0", submit and update. 4. The remote rig should now be keyed via N1MM messages. SSB 1. The supplied microphone cable was of no use to me, as I don't have a mike with an 8-pin DIN plug, so I made my own cable using a CAT5 end from a damaged piece of cable, a 3.5mm stereo jack, and a phono jack. If you make your own cable, Mike Hot is the Green/White striped wire, Mike Ground is the Blue wire, PTT Hot is the Blue/White striped wire, and PTT Gnd is the green wire. This was from a standard CAT5 cable piece. 2. I could not figure out a way to use VOX on the unit without an outboard carrier operated relay type setup. RTTY 1. The manual shows the correct way to setup MMTTY. If you use MMTTY version 1.68A, it will support comports up to 15. I went back to Device Manager, and made my virtual FSK Comport to be Com15. 2. There is nothing to setup in N1MM; just put Comport 15 into MMTTY. 3. The audio from the RRControl unit to the Sound card was too high a level, so I had to reduce the Radio Settings- Codec Out Gain to 220. 4. A tip- hook up the decoding audio chain before you try and transmit. I didn't hook up the audio decoding and transmitted, and MMTTY doesn't drop back into Rx unless the audio decoding is hooked up. Now I can use N1MM to send RTTY messages via Remote Rig. Radio Control- Remote Unit 1. My remote unit is housed at a contest station, and we wanted to minimize recabling when going from Remote to normal station use. Just follow the setup for the RR Control Unit above and it works just fine. One more tip: I'm using the K3 Twin concept with the Remote Rig. When I turned on the Control Radio and it was already in TERM mode, the audio was not muted and didn't mute unless I went to NORM mode and then back to TERM mode. To avoid this problem, I reduce AF Gain to minimum and THEN turn on the Control K3. When it connects, there is no audio from the Control K3. [Elecraft] K3/0 to K3 with contest programs
Hi all: I have a very nicely functioning remote setup. I control the complete K-Line in Maryland from a K3/0 in Key West. However, I have tried and tried, and I cannot get CW keying to work with N1MM or Writelog. I do have CW working with my regular (non-contest) logger, CommCAT. It uses the CAT line to both read and command frequency and mode, and also to key the transmitter in CW. Can anyone who has N1MM or Writelog working with CW send me screen shots of the setup of those programs? Can you possibly also send the HTML exported configuration files for the radio and control end RemoteRig uints? For these, screen shots of just the "Radio Settings", "Serial Settings" and "Advanced Settings" would be sufficient. Feel free to black out (using "Paint") the "Sip Contact" info, if you want, or just email me the settings for those windows. that way I'll have none of the private stuff. I have something wrong in either my setups for the contest programs or the configurations of the RR boxes, or both. Tnx. Merry Christmas to all. Brian *Brian F. [Elecraft] Fwd: K3/0 to K3 RemoteRig issue: NEVER MIND
I apologize for all these posts. Hopefully, I am done. For those who plan on upgrading to ATT U-Verse ADSL internet --- it is clear the Motorola NVG510 router is a problem. There are pages upon pages of posts on various forums about difficulties created by the change to this modem. Mine worked fine until a tech came to upgrade to a static ip address so some surveillance cameras would work. After that, my K3/0 to K3 hookup using RemoteRig was in kind of a "single duplex mode" it appeared to carry audio both ways, control signals from the K3/0 to the K3, but no data fed back to the K3/0 telling me the frequency, mode, etc of the distant K3. This came along with some truly weird other symptoms too numerous to list. Early today, it started working on its own. By afternoon it was back to "single duplex" kind of behavior. Hopefully, I may have just solved that by plugging the RemoteRig into a downstream daisy-chained standard D-Link wireless router. That will slow my speeds, offsetting some of the benefit I got by upgrading the internet service in the first place. However, now if I am on 40 meters, the K3/0 shows a frequency that begins with a "7" :>) That is progress. Again, sorry for the bandwidth. Perhaps this will help somebody in the future. 73 and Happy Holidays to all, Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] RemoteRig K3/0 to K3/100 Issues
Hi all: I have my remote gear all working extremely well. I can set up the control end as close as the same LAN as the radio end, or as far as 110 miles away, and the results are excellent. I have a nagging bug, however. Quite frequently, but not always, after I have shut down the K3/0 (which shuts down the remote K3/100), when I turn it back on again, it fails to make the connection. This can happen a day later or an hour later. Fortunately, the problem is always solvable from the control end --- it seems to relate to the control RemoteRig's way of connecting to its LAN --- I think. The kinds of things I try that usually result in restored comms include: Switching from wifi to hardwired at the control end. Or ... going the other way. One thing that almost always works is cycling the radio-end router, which I can do using a remotely controlled ip power switch. Bringing the radio end router down for 30 seconds and restarting almost always works. Has anyone a suggestion for what might be causing this maddeningly intermittent problem? [Elecraft] RemoteRig with K3/0 and K3/100 No Audio on Transmit
OK, I need ideas. I have my K3/100 with RemoteRig setup on the same bench as my K3/0 with RemoteRig, plugged into the same router. I have perfect control of the K3/100 using the K3/0, and received audio is solid. I have tried everything to get transmitted audio, and it just isn't happening. Here is the setup: I am using a Heil ProSet Elite. * I have JMP1 removed from the control RemoteRig ("RR")* I have the K3/100 set for rear panel. For the mike menu options, I have tried "HigH, and "Low", and Bias on and Bias off. Nothing makes any difference. Of course, I have selected the rear mike jack in each case. I have tried setting the Radio Settings on the RRs to Dual "yes" and Dual "No" I have tried several different "audio quality" settings, included the one recommended in the K3/0 manual, and I always have them set up to match between the remote and the control RR. I have perfect CW operation, but I get a correct (locally generated) sidetone in the right earphone, and a not-accurate (lots of dahs) sidetone in the left earphone. Another mystery --- when I power down on the control (K3/0) device, the remote (K3/100) XMIT light goes on briefly as it powers down. Perhaps that is a clue. Can anyone suggest a process I might try that will get me up and running? Tnx. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] RemoteRig + K3/0 setup with microphone
This must be in a manual someplace, but I can't find it. As my control rig, I have RemoteRig with a K3/0, sitting for the moment on the same table, plugged into the same router. For some reason, the RemoteRig for a *K3 used as the control station* comes with a cable that has a microphone connector. The cable set for the *K3/0* *used as the control station* has no such cable, so one must assume you are supposed to use the K3/0 front panel mike connector (since the rear panel mike connection is used for RemoteRig.) Nothing happens when I do that. No transmitted audio from the local ("control") site. I would plug into the control RemoteRig box, but there is no obvious place to do that. I can't tell the K3/0 to use the front panel mike and high bias, because the remote K3 follows every menu change I make at the local k3/0. I feel pretty dumb, but what is the answer. Thanks, guys, 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 won't key on 6 meters
Well, it worked for little awhile then stopped. If I go direct from the K3 to the KPA500 without running the control cable through the KAT500, it works. I restored the last working configuration file to the KAT500, but that made no difference. I have not locked out 6M in the band map menu. Every band keys properly with the control lines running through the KAT500 and then to the KPA500, except 6 meters. Ideas??? Brian *Brian F. [Elecraft] KPA500 Remote Control power on/off Questions
Hi guys: I have been roaming the archives and emailing with a few of you. i have determined that the method for getting the KPA500 to power up remotely is by connecting Pin 11 of the K3 ACC jack to Pin 8 on the KPA500 AUX connector. (Thanks Bob, K6XX) Then a macro can be run at the local K3/0 to cause the remote KPA500 to turn on and off. My setup has a KPAK3AUX cable from the K3 to the KAT500 and another KPAK3AUX cable from there to the KPA500. Can anyone confirm that it is ok to tie pin 11 at the K3 to pin 8 at the KAT500 and then pin 8 at the KAT500 to pin 8 at the KPA500? Also, to avoid surgery on the heavy-duty E850463 cables from Elecraft, I thought I'd try buying a pair of straight-through DE-15 cable extenders, surgically tie pin 11 at one end to pin 8 at the other, and clip off the same pins that the Elecraft-supplied cable has clipped off. Will that work? Alternatively, can someone describe the best approach to making this modification on the Elecraft KPAK3AUX cables? Thanks again! de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] K3/0 to K3 Working
I have the remote setup working on the desktop. It is pretty neat the way the K3 is slaved to the K3/0. Every button, every knob --- they move in lockstep. Audio quality is definitely degraded even though both RemoteRig is plugged into the same router. I have an immediate question --- is there a way to get the KAT500 and the KPA500 to power up and power down along with the K3/100 when commanded from the K3/0? And, is there a way to get the KPA500 to go into "Operate" mode? And, is there a way to force the KAT500 to re-tune from the K3/0? Thanks for any help. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receive Attenuation with KPA500 in Operate
Got it. Thanks. Figure 1 in the KAT500 manual leads one to believe that both cables need to be KPAK3AUX, as both DB15 cables in the diagram are labeled "3", and one of the cables has the warning not to use a standard VGA cable. The note, "3" also suggests 2 of that particular Elecraft cable. An obvious conclusion --- though wrong --- is that both need to be the same, and both could be the special Elecraft (KPAK3AUX) cable or a modified VGA cable to be the same as the KPAK3AUX.. My understanding on the tuner issue was that the KAT500 could be damaged by going through a retune cycle at high power. Thus, some kind of safety lockout is needed to prevent that. If I can configure the KAT500 to tune when the KPA500 is in "operate" mode, how do I prevent that kind of damage from occurring? Brian *Brian F. F red, thanks. I am using that cable both places where my diagram says "DB15 Cable". I guess I needed to have invested in only one. Everything seems to work, and the tuner protection works as well. I proved that by lowering K3 output power to 5 watts (just to be safe), allowing the KPA500 to key and asking the KAT500 to re-tune. it refuses to do so. That is the right result. 73, Brian *Brian F. Hi Don, Thanks for the prompt response. Yes, I am using the DB15 and the PTT line. I got it working. Here is my new cable lineup: 1. ACC on K3 (DB15) >>> DB15 Y Cable | >>>DB15 Cable >>> "XCVR" (DB15) On KAT500 | And | >>> "ACC" on Navigator Interface 2. "RS232" on K3 >>> "XCVR" (RS232) on P3 3. "PC" on P3 >>> "RS232" on Navigator Interface 4. "AMP" on KAT500 (DB15) >>> DB15 Cable >>> "AUX1" (DB15) on KPA500 5. NO PTT LINE into KPA500 or into KAT500 6. No "Key Line Interupter" anyplace. With this lineup, is the KAT500 protected from the KPA500 keying when the KAT500 is tuning? I must admit, I have mightily confused myself in this process. Thanks again, Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] K3 Receive Attenuation with KPA500 in Operate
Hi all: I am running a newly assembled "K-Line" --- K3/100, KPA500 and KAT500. The K3 is pretty "loaded" with KRX3, KAT3, KXV3A, etc. I just noticed that received signals are down 4 S-units when the KPA500 is in Operate. In Standby, signals pop right up. Reading past reflector emails on the topic, I found one thread that suggested this may have to do with the state of the KPA500 PTT. I found that pulling the PTT RCA plug out ended the problem. Then I replaced the PTT plug, and still had no problem. However, once I actually transmitted, and the PTT acted to key the KPA500, the problem recurred >>> Low sigs when the amp is in Operate, Full sigs when in Standby. Has anyone figured out a fix for this? 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] KRC2 Configuration --- More
OK, After many tries, I got the configuration almost right. Since the KRC2 has no 6 meter terminal, I have tried to assign 6 meters to any terminal I am not using. To be specific: I have a 160/80/30 dipole. I assign 160, 80 and 30 to the KRC2 80M slot. I use my 40 meter beam for 40/17/12. I assign 40/17/12 to the KRC2 40M slot. I have a tribander for 20/15/10. I assign 20, 15 and 10 to the KRC2 20M slot. I have tried to assign 6M to 10M, 160M, 17M, 12M, XV1. Every time, it winds up attached to the 20M slot. So, if I put the K3 band on 6M, the band decoder puts 12V on the 20M terminal --- not what I want. Yes, I have the switch in the "DL" position when i load, and in the "OP" position when I test. [Elecraft] How do I change the bandmap on my KRC2?
Hi guys, I have searched the reflector archives with no luck. I have been able to modify the bandmap (on my PC) using the latest (rev. 2.17) KRC2 configuration utility, but I can't figure out how to write it to the KRC2. The utility is reading the KRC2, comes up with a message "KRC-2 Firmware = version 1.6". I created a "Map 2", I can save it to the PC, I can "write to KRC-2", and it acts like it is writing, but nothing I do seems to tell the KRC2 to use Map2. It always winds up with Map1. Reading the manual suggests there are jumper changes I might need to make, but the manual is pretty impenetrable to me. Can someone explain? Tnx. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] LP-100 Wattmeter Won't Boot up
Hi guys: I have had an LP-100 wattmeter for a long time, and it was in my spare parts bin, for whatever reason. I brought it back out to put it back into service with my new K3, and it won't light up. The power light comes on, but the screen stays black. [Elecraft] K3 S/N 7394 Weird Symptom
Hi all: My K3 has been working flawlessly. It is part of a K3/KPA500/KAT500 lineup. I was monitoring FSK441 on 6M for several hours, no problems. I turned it off for breakfast, came back and turned it on. The front panel LCD fully lit, but with no characters on it, just blank. All front panel buttons were unresponsive. I couldn't even turn it off without cutting 12V and re-connecting. I tried connecting to the configuration utility, but it wouldn't connect. Then I discovered the 12V supply had disconnected from the KAT500. I reconnected that, and the K3 came back to life. I am completely mystified. This is repeatable. If I disconnect power to the KAT500, the K3 loses front panel responsiveness, and just stays in whatever state it was in when power was lost. The KAT500 connects to the K3 using the special 15pin KPAK3AUX cable. When I disconnect that, the problem goes away. Reconnect it, and the problem recurs --- K3 frozen in whatever state it was in when the 12V power to the KAT500 was disconnected. Anybody know what is going on here? Tnx de Brian W3BW *Brian F. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 270V Error
Thanks, Ron. I disassembled the top and left side panels and reassembled. I did the test you suggested on the interlock, and the fault was still there. However, after I reassembled it, it worked for awhile, then gave the fault again. I cleared the fault, and I now have it working at very low power into a dummy load. I will report any return of the problem, but I sense there is still something intermittent going on. Standby ... Now, it is good into the KAT500 and from there into an antenna, at full power. Weird, but I like having it back. 73, Brian *Brian F. Re: [Elecraft] KRC2ACC with K3 and Navigator an P3
Don, does the "Y" connector Elecraft sells work for this? I have on order a KAT500 and a KPA500. I can't quite figure out what the KPAK3AUX does, but will that address the problem? Here is the long-term plan. I want to operate this station (in Maryland) remotely from our home in Key West. I will get a K3/0 when the mini comes out, and the RemoteRig gear. I will not need the P3 hooked up for that, so maybe that frees up the needed pathway. But while I am in MD, I do need the P3. I want the KRC2 only for antenna switching. However, the audible feedback was the way I was going to be sure the antennas actually switched --- by monitoring the station remotely (including the readout of the rotor) using a webcam and mike. . If that is the only reason to keep a PC running, I can give that up. Of course, I can probably give up the Navigator (only when operating remotely) if I am getting audio in/out using RemoteRig. So my questions are: Other than the audible cues, what do I give up by loading the KRC2 firmware vice the KRCACC firmware? I really only must have antenna switching. Will the Y cable from Elecraft work with a KRC2 (not ACC) and a P3 and a Navigator? What does the KPAK3AUX do for my eventual station (full remotely controlled K-Line)? Does the Y cable that comes with that fit my needs? Thanks so much for your help. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] KRC2ACC with K3 and Navigator an P3
Hi all, OK, I have built my KRC2ACC, and it passes all the tests. I have built the special cable for use with my K3. Now am stumped again, so I am hoping someone can "baby-talk" me through this. I use a Navigator interface for digital modes. That occupies the ACC jack of the K3. I use a P3 Panadaptor, and that occupies the serial (RS232) port of the K3. The Navigator uses the RS232 port of the P3. There is no place left to connect the KRC2ACC. The manual makes reference to "daisy-chaining", but always in connection with the K2, not the K3. So I am stuck again. Where do I plug it in, and what jumpers do I set? Thanks in advance, Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] KRC2ACC Problems continued
1. I have quadruple-checked the polarity of every diode, electrolytic and resistor pack. 2. I have quadruple-checked the orientation of every ic and transistor or voltage regulator. 3. I have reheated every pin I could reach. 4. I have not reversed X1 and X2. 5. I have loaded the latest version of firmware, and it seemed to work fine. I used the correct version for the KRC2ACC. I still do not seem to pass the initial checks. I cannot get voltages to appear on any of the "band relay" terminals. Yes, I am checking at the terminal itself, not the screw. What is my next move? Thanks for any and all suggestions. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] KRC2 Troubleshooting
I have completed my KRC2 to the point of the smoke test. No smoke ... I guess that is good. When I power up, the LED lights (low), but no "short delay while the KRC2 performs diagnostics." The first test step, "Holding F1" , fails to produce 12 volts at the 60M source, or at any of ther terminals. I have done about 2 hours of visual inspection. Every diode is correctly oriented, as are all the ICs and the electrolytics. I am beginning to wonder if I have the voltage regulator in backward, though it looks exactly right. TGhe schematic says I should have +5 volts at C14 and +12 V at C13. I have the reverse. Before I try to unsolder U3, can someone confirm that those 2 caps are correctly labeled on the schematic? Also can someone describe the pin numbering for U3. It really looks like it is in there correctly. Also, the +5V end of D8 reads +5V (which should be right), but the -12V end of R12 is only -10.4V. Do these clues suggest anything? Tnx. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] RP2 Orientation for KRC2
I am building the RPC2. The instructions for installing resistor network RP2 (47K) says to orient the network with pin 1 (black dot) toward Pin 1 of the PCB outline. I cannot find a black dot on the component nor any other indication of a preferred end. Anyone know what I am, missing? Is the component, in fact, symmetrical so orientation doesn't matter? The instruction for RP1 make the point that it is symmetrical. The instruction for RP2 is very specific about requiring the correct orientation. Thanks in advance. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] Replacing J93 in K3 S/N 7394 Subreceiver
I have just received a replacement J93 jack for my KRX3. I broke the original jack while trying to plug in the miniature coax. I have removed the KRX3 from the K3. I have removed the top cover of the enclosure for the KRX3. Now I am stuck. The board does not come out of the bottom cover readily --- I recall it kind of snapped in during the build. I am afraid to force it. I think I need to get to the bottom of the board to do the job. There seems to be a pin still stuck in the through-board hole for one of the pins, and I will have to get it out from the bottom. One other question. This jack has 2 pins on the ground side, and one center pin. Please describe where they should go on the board. Nothing is marked, at least on the side I can see. Also, just for curiosity, what is J93?It is a jack with no center pin, and it seems to connect to nothing in the assembly process. Tnx de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] K3 S/N 7394 RF Out = 0 Problem: SOLVED
Gary and all who offered help: I have no idea what the problem was. However, I unbuilt all the way back to a K3/10, then built it back up. I added the KPA3, and it passed all the RF tests. I added the KRX3, and the subreceiver seems to work, and I still have RF out. That was where it failed the last time. Now I just have to replace a busted J92 Female on the KRX3 (not needed except for when using a separate receive antenna), and I'll be good to go. I have already requested a few of those from Elecraft. They are pretty delicate, and I wouldn't be surprised if some of the others develop intermittent problems at some point. Thanks again for the help, and especially for the excellent support by Elecraft. By the way, I am 70, have terrible reading vision and arthritic thumbs. I'd still rather build them then get them built. It is nice to know what goes on inside them. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] K3 S/N 7394 RF Out = 0 Problem
This is a continuation of yesterday's issues. In retracing my steps, I see that the basic K3 passed the Transmitter Gain Calibration step and the rig with the KPA3 installed did as well. Something went awry after that. After that, I added only the KRX-3. I got distracted by a problem with that, and I never realized things had changed in the RF Output department. Does anyone have a checklist of voltages, resistance readings, etc. that I can go down in looking for the problem. I will start by removing the KRX-3 (subreceiver), and seeing if it works then. Your thought are much appreciated. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. That control acts normally. I can set the power from 0 to 100+ watts, and the green light is on. After the calibration run, power = 0.0.briefly flashes up, and then it goes to where I had the power set before the run --- 5.0 watts in my case. *Brian F. [Elecraft] K3 Setup Failing
Hi guys, I am in a fight with my just assembled K3. I have gone through all the steps, and everything worked. However, I could not get the sub-receiver to receive anything --- just noise. So I figured I would put that aside for awhile and try transmitting into a dummy load. I had already run the TX gain Calibration steps at 5watts and 50 watts, both with no problem. I found that though I I can hear my audio (sounding good) in the XMIT Monitor, I had little to no indication of RF out, either on the rig's meter or an external meter. So I reran XMIT gain calibration with this result: OS Version 6.1 Build 7601 Windows 7/Windows Server 2008 R2 K3 MCU revision 04.67. RS-232 speed 4800 bit/s. Starting 5 watt calibration Calibrating at 1.900 MHz Calibration power settled at " 0.0 W ;" Elapsed time: 5 seconds Tx Gain calibration failed because transmit power did not reach the expected value I saved my configuration, then did a reset. The result was the same. I reloaded my configuration file, result the same. The 50 watt test gives a similar error. No smoke by the way. What have I done? Tnx de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] Big Oops on KRX3
Somehow I broke the connector J92. The center pin broke flush with the board while I was inserting the coax connector. What is my next move? I thought that line was needed only if I want to use the external BNC connector for "receive only" on the sub-receiver. However, I seem to have no signal in the KRX-3 --- S meter zero, just noise. There is somthting about this I don't understand. I am prepared to do without the BNC connector option. How do I get the sub-receiver working? Is there something I have setup wrong? de Brian W3BNW *Brian F. Re: [Elecraft] KPA3 Fan Speed
It's working. I don't know what changed. I completed installation of the KPA3, and I tried the fans again. There is a distinct difference in speeds as I go from Fn1 to Fn4. I just didn't hear it before. Tnx. Brian *Brian F. [Elecraft] KPA3 Fan Speed
Hi guys: I am assembling a K3, and I am at the point where I am adding the KPA3 amplifier. There is a step where you test the fans --- under CONFIG --- going from FN1 to FN2, FN3, FN4 in steps. The fans are supposed to progressively run faster. Mine seem to maintain the same speed (seems fast, but they are silent. I almost can't hear them) for all 4 positions. I cannot tell the difference. Anyone know what this is about? Tnx de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] K3/0 Question
I was planning to use my K3, currently being built, remotely. I note in the operator's manual that you are advised not to interrupt power to the rig, but to always use the power button to turn it on and off.. That kind of kills my plans for remotely powering up and down using an internet controlled switch. My question is: *Does the K3/0 handle power on/off for the K3?* * * Tnx. 73 de Brian W3BW *Brian F. [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Assembly Resistance Check is low
OK, I read the archives. The consensus seems to be that DMM's can have inaccurate measurements in this circuit. I powered up, and no smoke. Everything lights up like it is supposed to. Onward! Wruble Date: Sat, May 18, 2013 at 1:25 PM Subject: K3 Assembly Resistance Check is low To: Elecraft Reflector My K3 fails the test on page 45 of the assembly manual. The resistance from a pin on U12 to ground is 447 ohms. One of you asked a question ... was the reading the same with the leads reversed? The answer is no, that reading is about 4.5 kohms, and it acts like the meter is charging a capacitor in that direction. It takes a long time for the meter reading to settle down. I put a fresh battery in the Fluke DMM, and I also tested a batch of 5% tolerance 1/4 watt carbon resistors I had. They all read a little low, none read high, but none were low outside the 5% tolerance. So, my reading of U12 to ground is 10% low. The manual is pretty clear that the resistance must be >500 ohms. What is my next step? Thanks. Brian W3BW *Brian F.
