[Elecraft] [KPA500] Reduced band sensitivity when in OPER
I just noticed that if I flip my KPA500 into OPER, the band sensitivity drops by a huge amount. I have a KAT500 between it and my rig. If I flip it back to STBY, the band reception is back to normal. The amp still puts out power according to the W2 that is after it. Hmm. I figured it sounded like something not-good. The setup hasn’t changed in years, so there isn’t a configuration change in play here. I’ll give them a call tomorrow unless they pipe in here. [Elecraft] [KX3][2M] Assembly Advice - Going Nuts!
I am installing my third 2M module on a KX3 for a friend. On this particular unit, the nut that I guess was being held on by some adhesive I never noticed, fell off the back of the FET heat sink. I’m having a stickler of a time trying to figure out a clever way to hold the nut on there so I can re-insert the board and get the lock screw through the side of the case. (Figure 20, Page 27) Any wise men around have any sage advice? /ponder Chris K6OZY __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] [KX3][2M] Over heat question
I participated in a local ARES net with my KX3/2M combo and a mirage B-310-G and B-34-G amps. We were using Olivia 1000/32 using 2M verticals to pass traffic around the valley and Tucson testing various power levels. Long story short, these mirage amps work well but the 310 consumes 9 amps even when driven with .3 watts in / 30w out from the KX3-2M, and the B-34 uses a more field-use reasonable 3.9 amps when driven with 3 Watts In/ 20 watts out from the KX3. The net current usage is more optimal with the KX3 + B34G, but using this combination the KX3 over heats and shuts off. Here's where my confusion comes in. The back of the KX3 where the primary FETs are were hot. I was under the impression that the KX3 used a 50Mhz IF to drive the 2M module and the 2M FET on the side would be where the heat is generated, ultimately being the part that would overheat if driven too long. But it seemed that the rear FETs were where the max heat was generated, ultimately resulting in a self protection shutdown. Can I get some clarification on why this happened and what the drive level of the IF is? I have a heat sink to install but have not done it yet. I have two KX3's, and will likely make one my digital high-duty cycle KX3 if this is unavoidable at even 3W. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3][2M] Over heat question
OK Good to know. I could not get all the way through a single radiogram on Olivia 1000/32 with an average transmit time of 2.5 minutes without it shutting down a hair after 2 minutes in. I just installed all the SideKick panels and Fred's heatsink on my newest KX3 and will retry tonight. Is there a reason why you chose 50mhz instead of 28mhz for the IF? The KX3 is very inefficient on 6M it seems. I have two KX3's each with a 2M module. Both units have had the temp calibration done to them. When using CW, there is a noticeable drift in the received CW side tone. The module install was easy. The instructions were perfect. There was only one scary part where you have to slightly bend a toroid on the PA board. Re: [Elecraft] Why is KX3 phase noise so much less than the K3 ?
Thanks Wayne and Alan, for that super detailed info. The radio side of things are still very magical to me! I'm a software guy, not a hardware guy. :) I don't own a K3, but two KX3's for my knob radios. I use a Flex 6700 and 6300 for home use. I'm assuming the 6700's -147 dBc@10kHz, -152 dBc@100kHz phase noise values are pretty good then, if anything higher than -140 dBc is acceptable. Even the 6300 is spec'd at -140 dBc@10kHz. I do agree that my old (and sold) 3000 was messing up the bands during Field Day last year. This year we are using a K3, two 6300's, and a 6700, so I'm hoping for better performance all around. Again, thank you for the info! On Jun 9, 2014, at 9:08 AM, Wayne Burdick n...@elecraft.com wrote: Chris Johnson elecr...@ozy.us wrote: 1) Is phase noise the measurement of the instability of an DDS? That's one contributing factor. But the DDS signal drives a mixer, and the other input to the mixer may be the larger source of phase noise in transmit mode. 2) How does this impact TX only, and why does it create such an issue to nearby listeners? In the case of the KX3 and Flex radios (e.g. Flex 1500/3000/5000), the limiting factor is probably the transmit D-to-A converter. Its performance is limited by quantization and sampling noise, setting an upper bound on phase noise. The KX3 has an advantage in that its synthesizer uses a DDS-driven PLL, while the Flex radios are DDS only, without a following PLL. But the TX DAC is still a factor in both cases. In a well-designed superhet like the K3, the TX DAC's noise floor affects only the in-band portion of the transmitted signal, i.e. the portion within the I.F. crystal filter passband. The K3 has two crystal filters in series in transmit mode, which results in very high rejection of noise outside the SSB passband (typically 100-3000 Hz). This means that the limiting factor on wideband transmit noise is not the IF injection into the mixer -- it really *is* the synthesizer. The K3's synthesizer is extremely clean at wide offsets (another DDS-driven PLL), and that is why its transmit phase noise is so low. 3) Does phase noise go down if you use a faster master clock? The Flex 6700 uses a 983.04mhz vs a 122.99Mhz clock in the 6300. That is a completely different design (direct digital up/down conversion), which requires very high clock speeds, very expensive ADC and DAC components, and high current drain in receive mode. It can be made clean in transmit and receive modes, although in receive mode this architecture will still have typically 15-20 dB lower blocking dynamic range than a well-designed superhet. None of this is applicable to the KX3, which is obviously intended to be an ultraportable radio with low current drain and low cost. 4) Do low phase noise radios allow in-band use, such as someone on CW on 20M and someone up on voice on 20M? Yes. In general this is only a problem if you have stations in very close proximity. In this situation, the K3 is better than any other radio on the market. This is why the K3 is highly favored for Field Day and DXpeditions. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Why is KX3 phase noise so much less than the K3 ?
Pardon my ignorance, but can I get some clarification on a few things? 1) Is phase noise the measurement of the instability of an DDS? If so, does this mean a cheap part is being used? Does a GPSDO or a OCXO reduce phase noise? 2) How does this impact TX only, and why does it create such an issue to nearby listeners? 3) Does phase noise go down if you use a faster master clock? The Flex 6700 uses a 983.04mhz vs a 122.99Mhz clock in the 6300. 4) Do low phase noise radios allow in-band use, such as someone on CW on 20M and someone up on voice on 20M? [Elecraft] KXPA100 ATU Issue
My KX3 and KXPA100 has been off for about 1 month due to Life getting in the way. Today I turned it back on, checked available firmware and updated my KX3 to the current FW and my KXPA100 to the 1.09 beta. When trying to use the amp ATU.X, nothing happens. The SWR light flashes continuously after the attempt and the unit makes no ATU sounds. If I turn off the amp via PA-OFF, and try the internal KX3 tuner, it is working fine. I then reverted the KXPA100 back to non-beta 1.04 with the same results. The utility connects and can see status. If I tune to a band that does not need a tuner, such as 20M on my windom, and hold XMIT to send a carrier, as long as I am under 10W using the KX3, power is being output. When I go above 10W, the output is as shown: https://www.flickr.com/photos/ozy311/12624894153/ My fault table also looks very odd. No way my power was that high, but that may be from v1.0 firmware. And my SWR and voltage never dropped that low, unless it faults that when power is removed and the supply drains. https://www.flickr.com/photos/ozy311/12625150863/in/photostream/ I really hope nothing is wrong. I need to use it Thurs-Sunday at our camping event. :( Please help! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Updated KX3 audio-Morse user interface (for blind operators and mobile use)
The DISP key sends the Y of X.YYY.ZZZ on the display. Is there a way to read the X and ZZZ parts too? You can get it to send X.YYY by changing bands, but I'd prefer to be able to get a full readout without changing bands. But we just improved it by making the following changes: * Holding CWT switch on power-up turns on audio-Morse feedback and sets speed to 20 WPM. (The other way to do this is via the SW TONE menu entry, which allows you to set different code speeds. However, menu entries themselves are not yet supported by the audio-Morse interface.) * Switch activation truncates any audio-Morse output already in progress. * 'R' substituted for '.' and 'T' substituted for ‘0’ to speed up frequency reports, etc. * SWR reported after TUNE or ATU TUNE (SWRnn.n). * The receiver is now muted during all audio-Morse output. I can appreciate that. And I would not want it to delay other features. But to compare to other radios, most are inverted in this operating method. They are locked into bands of their localization and require either modification or proof of MARS license to open it.I'm not for locking it down either, and would be satisfied with band edge beeps. I have a blind ham that uses this radio quite a bit, and it would be optimize his operation of the radio. I love my KPA500. I don't use it enough because of all the low power digital I do. I was wondering if the quality of my signal would better if I let the KPA500 produce the output even if the wattage is 50 or less watts. If I drive it with 1 to 5 watts, it produces 10 to 50 watts. I like the thought of offloading the thermal load of my long JT65 JT9 duty cycles onto the KPA rather than my main rig which is a Flex 6700. Does the KPA500 make a much cleaner signal than the built in barefoot amp because its running at such a higher voltage? A week or so ago, I took the leap into the twenty-first century, when I purchased an Elecraft K3 transceiver. We know the reputation, and versatility, and expandability of the K3--why even some of the operators on this list have taken the plunge. In my humble opinion, after being a ham for forty-six years, there is no better combination than the Elecraft K3, and our own Rob Santello's Hampod. Kenwood, Icom, and lastly Yaesu, can't hope to hold a candle to what K6DQ has built, the Hampod K3 Reader. I seriously doubt that there isn't anything that the K3 Reader doesn't tell you about what the K3 is doing. Rob has even built in some macros that perform vital functions for blind ops, with a simple push of a button. Sighted folks don't get that kind of service from their visual display. Further, can you tell me which Kenwood rig will decode CW and PSK31, and and read it aloud to you? If there is one, I must have missed it. The elegance and cutting edge technology employed in the K3 is brought to life for the owner by the Hampod K3 Reader. I was amazed to find that the radio even has a temperature sensor in the front panel that can be queried by the Hampod, to tell you the ambient temperature. Now that's really slick. The K3 Reader which was developed by Rob, K6DQ over many months, and is still evolving is a labor of love from which we all can benefit. Rob hand-builds each unit, and, as some on this list can attest, he stands behind what he does, providing service that any larger company can't duplicate. It didn't work, and the owner had a brand new unit in his hands within less than a week, newly assembled and tested. Some may grumble that the Elecraft is expensive. In my opinion, the prospective owner can scale the radio to his budget. Limited funds, you can start small, and since the radio is modular in design and operation, you can add options to the radio as finances allow. Start out with the ten watt version of the K3, and see what it's like running QRP. When you have the bucks, you can add the watts, and any other options that are available. Sure, the K3 Reader doesn't cost what a VGS3 does, but it's not a VGS3 (hope I have that model right). The operator is not subject to the whims of Kenwood engineers who decide what's gonna talk, and what ain't. With the K3 Reader, if the radio shows it, the Hampod K3 Reader says it. Ask a Hampod owner. So, if you want to cruise the bands in extraordinary style Elecraft and Hampod is a marriage of technology we can all appreciate. Hooking up the KX1 to the same service monitor, I noticed that my KX1 is acceptably aligned within +/-10hz on 80m, 30m, 20m. On 40m, it is ~685hz above the dialed frequency.Does anyone have any tips on adjusting just 40m? It seems the calibration procedure would impact all bands. 685hz is pretty noticeable, or am I just expecting too much? Re: [Elecraft] [KX1] Alignment Question
Hi Don, I am using my elmer's very expensive service monitor to watch the frequency that the KX1 is generating. I set the VFO to a given frequency, type that same frequency into the service monitor, then start a solid tune on the KX1. There is a BNC cable connected between both devices. The service monitor then shows on its spectrum display the exact frequency the KX1 is generating and also shows how many Hz it is deviating from the frequency entered. Are you saying that BFO / DDS settings are only dealing with the RX portion of the KX1? I understand you thinking this because the offset is ~ 600hz, the standard offset for CW. This is not the case, and only happens on 40m. TX deviation on 80m, 30m, and 20m is only off by a few hz. If this is controlled by the firmware, how can this be calibrated? I picked up a second KX1 off eBay this week for an emergency radio and will also check its alignment. Tap the band button and see if there is a u in the left of the display when the 7 digit is displayed. The KX1 firmware controls both the transmit and receive frequencies. The receive frequency is offset by whatever you set into the sidetone pitch, and the frequency indicated on the dial should be the transmit frequency. So, if the transmit frequency is indeed off, it must be due to the firmware. That has nothing to do with the BFO and DDS settings on the KX1. Are you certain the receiver you are using to listen to the KX1 is in CW mode? If it is in SSB mode, its dial indication may be shifted by the amount that receiver has set in its sidetone pitch parameter. I know Yaesu changes the displayed frequency when going from SSB to CW, and they shift the transmit frequency when in CW mode. Elecraft does it differently and always displays the transmit frequency, but shifts the frequency for receive. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/18/2012 2:39 PM, Chris Johnson wrote: I guess using the word Dial may be misleading. I am simply trying to say that on 40m the frequency that is being transmitted on is 685 hz higher than what is on the display. This is only on 40m. The other 3 bands are pretty accurate. The BFO and DDS menu options are set to 0. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)
Hi Guys, I made a video and posted it on youtube to better explain the issue I'm having. Please watch and then reply to it here if you would. Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] Help with KeyLine Interrupt on KPA500 (Video)
Hi Eric, I do not have the AUX cable. As described in the video, I am only using the RCA cable from the Flex 3000 into the KAT500 and then another cable from the KAT500 down to the KPA500. I am not using this with a K3 radio, which in that case, would only use the AUX cable and no RCA Key Line. The tuner always interrupts this line when it is tuning. This can be done either via the the AMP keying line RCA connectors on the Rig, KAT500 and the AMP, or via the KPAK3AUX cable connections between the K3 and KAT500 and between the KAT500 and the KPA500 when the K3 is used. Some customers have hooked up the AMP keying line to the amp two ways in parallel. One correctly through the KAT500 to the amp (usually via the KPAK3AUX cable), and the other incorrectly via a second path directly from the Rig's Key out RCA connector directly to the amp. This second path will nullify the KAT500's attempt to open the AMP keying line to theMAP during tune. 73, Eric --- www.elecraft.com On 12/7/2012 1:35 AM, Chris Johnson wrote: Hi Guys, I made a video and posted it on youtube to better explain the issue I'm having. [Elecraft] KX3 Pelican Case
I saw that the smallest case so far used is a Pelican 1170. Does anyone have any pictures of this? Since I have not received my key yet, I am not ready to start plucking foam, but would like to see what others are using. I'm hoping to get the KX3 with integrated key, mic, and if possible an extra set of NiMH's and headphones. I need the smallest fit possible for SOTA trips. Please let me see your setup! I have my KX1 in a super small pelican 1150 case and love it. I can fit it with the headphones and extra set of NiMH's on the side. I got my KX3 last week and love it.
