[Elecraft] K2 low power

2010-03-17 Thread Conway Yee
I have found low power on initial transmitter tests of my K2 construction.
I am unable to get above about 1 Watt before I get High Current.

I can not find any obvious error in winding T1-4. I reflowed all the
joints involved in the toroids.

Q6 is warm. I am unable to assess the temperature of Q7 or Q8 because of
the heatsink.

No errors noted in the resistors in measuring power output.

[Elecraft] Q7 fails resistance checks.

2010-02-17 Thread Conway Yee
I have just finished the basic construction of the RF board.

Both the base and collector of Q7 fail resistance checks, being near
shorted out (0.1-0.2 ohm). I must have a solder bridge SOMEWHERE,
otherwise unidentified. No obvious bridges noted.

Logically, it should somehow be associated with T3 and/or T4.

What is the most likely souce of my problem? Should I take out T3 and/or

[Elecraft] On the advisability of selling kit radios

2010-02-08 Thread Conway Yee
The threads about a kit amplifier got me thinking.

It is now 1999. The market is saturated with well established companies
such as Yaesu, Icom and Kenwood selling high quality radios. Ham radio
technology is stagnant with no major leaps in the horizon. The average
amateur is aging rapidly with very little influx of new blood. The youth
are all interested in computers and the internet. The days of Heathkit
are long past; there is no way to save money building kit electronics.
The only kit manufacturers sell small inexpensive radios that can be
built in a few hours.

Certainly there is no good reason to start a company selling a 100 Watt
kit SSB/CW rigOTOH Elecraft bet it could and it would appear that they
are successful.

It is now 2010. The same arguments are being put forward for an solid
state HF amplifier. In addition, the legal liability of high current
electronics is daunting. The population of customers of amplifiers is
even smaller than that for 100 Watt kits. Are these arguments
correct? I don't know but suspect that there would be a niche market
for such kits as long as the manufacturer has no business presence in the
US.

Hopefully such a kit starts getting sold in the next few years. It
sounds like fun.

Searching some more, I am no longer certain that this is the case, I have
been using a Fluke 77 for AC voltage measurements. Checking the spec
sheet, it appears thaat AC voltages are measured from 100mV to 750V with a
frequency range from 45Hz to 1KHz. Certainly the BFO voltages are too low
and the frequency too high to register.

Testing this theory, I place my Fluke 77 to TP3 which is KNOWN to have
12099Hz, I read 0V. This MAY explain my zero measurements on TP2 and pin
6 of U11.

Trying the frequency probe on pin 6, I see 4913.11Hz This is also seen
on pin 7 (as expected). I also see the same on both sides of D37
(although slightly higher frequency 4913.38Hz. Nothing is seen on TP2.
and possibly on C168 (unstable number much smaller than 4913, mostly in
the 2000 range). In summary, assuming that the signal is from the
crystal, I see it up to the gate of J310 but not on the source.

Does this mean that I have managed to fry Q24?

I note that V_{alc} is zero. Could I have missed something that is
supposed to be hooked up to the other side of R98? I still can't find a
jumper in the instructions that is supposed to be soldered to the tracing
extending from the other side of R98 toward the control board.

Also, what test equipment am I supposed to purchase that is able to
measure voltages in the MHz range? I can break out my oscilloscope but
this seems overkill for the job. Is there a handheld multimeter that can
handle HF frequency measurements?

[Elecraft] K2 BFO not oscillating

2010-01-30 Thread Conway Yee
TP2 reads 0 MHz.

Checking the components involving the BFO, No obvious missing components.
No obvious cold joints.

I checked the to pads adjacent to L33 which I believe to be the pads to
the BFO crystal filters (two more are hidden under L33). With power on,
the voltages are different making me suspect that I did not short the
crystals.

The manual tells me that the BFO isn't working or the frequency probe is
not hooked up (which it is). It also tells me to go to the
troubleshooting section. The table in the section doesn't seem to
illuminate anything. The signal tracing part only seems to tell me to
check the voltages (which are lower than the 0.020 volts).

What do I do?

[Elecraft] followup on K2 contruction and assistants

2010-01-25 Thread Conway Yee
My daughters (3yo and 7 yo) and I are continuing the K2 build.

Both daughters are now capable of holding the soldering iron and the
solder during soldering. They take turns now: one holding the solder and
the other holding the iron. Both are sitting on my lap when soldering is
done.

Needless to say, the 7 year old is steadier than the 3 year old but both
are capable. No obvious cold solders and Dad occasionally reflows the
joint when suspicious. I am having them do only resistors/capacitors. No
semiconductors.

I haven't tried having the 7 year old hold both the solder and the iron at
the same time but will try in the next few days. I don't think the 3 year
old can hold both.

>Much of it comes from the fact this reflector seems to be 95% K3 talk.

I've been thinking about this thread for awhile. Is the K2 outdated
technology? I would say yes almost without equivocation.

Ham radio in general is outdated. I have a cellphone in my pocket that
has <<1 watt output and gives CONFIDENT point-to-point communication
around the world under virtually all reasonable circumstances. The
Internet also gives much more convenient worldwide communication. The
only advantage ham radio has in communication in the absence of
intervening infrastructure.

The construction of the K2 is also outdated technology. The IC choices
are now increasingly difficult to find (in any form factor as the designs
themselves are getting discontinued). SMT is now the norm in industry and
DIP is outdated. Software defined radio rather than hardware is now
becoming the norm.

The K2 is the state of the art in ONLY an extreme niche. Specifically it
is likely the highest performing hardware radio that is available for
construction by a hobbyist from the component level. Given technical
advances in electronics, it is likely to remain the state of the art for
the foreseeable future.

As far as maintainability, I see no insurmountable challenges. After all,
there are Model T and Delorean clubs keeping those cars on the road. With
the Internet available, communication with enthusiasts are easier than
with newsletters (e.g. FoxTango). Elecraft is too small a company to
manufacture any part that is not easily reversed engineered. Sooner or
later nearly all the DIP IC's will be not available on the market. At
this point, since the technology used in the K2 was relatively generic, we
will figure out that the chips (say 612 or the 3150) was used in massive
quantities in a Sony Walkman or a Technics audio amplifier. Ebay prices
on such items will be negligible and Elecraft enthusiasts can buy someone
else's junk for pennies on the dollar.

Yes. I know. Given the instructions, I figured MOST would just jump in

inventory. To each his own.

I inventory the ENTIRE kit and designate the destination of each

All inconsistencies MUST be understood before proceeding. This is how I
worked out that there were two capacitors short on in the control panel

Before soldering each part, I check its identification AGAIN.

I believe, however, erroneously that this decreases my risk of putting the
wrong part in the wrong location.

This list of 5 capacitors is already in the Errata. This brings the
inventory to 38 of 43 capacitors. There are still 5 capacitors missing.
Assuming that only one line was cut off at the top, the remaining
capacitors are missing from the last line (i.e. >C175). The line

I agree that it is likely an error in the parts listing. The word
processor likely leaves only a certain amount of space which is exceeded
by having 28, 43 entries. I prefer LaTeX which calculates ALL of these

Gentlemen,
Your recommendations are appreciated. I checked the IC joints VERY
carefully for cold joints and bridges. I reflowed all joints as well.
My leads are long as well.

I have a followup question. The instructions specifically say NOT to
remove the backing on either side. My LCD backlight assembly has white
diffusers on both sides (so far so good). There is, however a SECOND
thin plastic translucent (not white) film as well on top of the assembly
which seems to be removable. Can I remove this second film?

tnx.

[Elecraft] K2 front panel LCD soldering

2009-12-26 Thread Conway Yee
On page 27, right column of the current K2 construction manual, the
revised instructions tell me to place the spacers beside the LCD leads and
remove the spacers after soldering. The original instructions tell me to
place the LCD leads THROUGH the holes in the spacer. Presumably these
spacers are the LCD spacers broken from the RF probe/switch spacer at the
beginning of the construction.

Why did they change the instructions? What is the advantage?

Not knowing the benefits of the new instructions, it would appear that the
old instructions make more sense. The new method leaves the LCD supported
by only the leads. The spacers add support.

tnx.

[Elecraft] K2 front panel board

2009-12-20 Thread Conway Yee
I am working on the front panel board. I have a problem with pin 10 of
RP1. The hole is not completely formed. There is a small sliver of green
plastic blocking the hole about half way through the board.

Suggestions?

tnx.

Is there any current source for the PCB's that EA3BLQ provided?
I was looking at the site and the mods look rather interesting.

[Elecraft] Elecraft HF amplifier?

2009-11-17 Thread Conway Yee
Is there a chance that a Elecraft will develop a HF amplifier? Is there
another kit manufacturer with such a beast? It would be nice to have a
kit station from Alpha to Omega.
