Re: [Elecraft] KX1 initial LCD test

2009-05-02 Thread Craig Rairdin
"XV 1.6e" is a transverter part. I bet it got tossed into the wrong bin in
the kitting area. I'm sure Elecraft will send you a replacement on Monday if
you ask.

The good news is it lights up, so power must be getting to at least some of
the parts. :-)

[Elecraft] KX1 guide for non-builders

2009-05-01 Thread Craig Rairdin
I just finished building a KX1 for a friend and it occurred to me that you
pick up a lot of information about the radio during the build process that
could come in handy as an owner/operator of the radio. Unfortunately this
information is lost if someone else builds your KX1 or if you buy one on
eBay.

I wrote up a little 3-page guide for my friend and thought some of you might
find it useful. I've posted it as a PDF on my site:

http://www.craigr.com/Elecraft%20KX1%20Maintenance%20Guide.pdf

If you have trouble with the link just let me know and I'll send it to you.

The goal of the guide is not to repeat information from the manuals but to
help you find it. In some cases (such as a complete disassembly procedure)
there's nothing in the manual. In other cases (such as receiver alignment)
the procedure is split between two or more manuals.

Hope it's useful.

[Elecraft] KX1 Kynar wire

2009-04-25 Thread Craig Rairdin
What's up with this Kynar wire in the KX1 kit? I seem to recall this problem
when building my first KX1. The second one is no better. It's impossible to
strip it without causing it to break - either during stripping or after it's
soldered to the board. My "as seen on TV" wire stripper just cuts it. If I
carefully roll it under my exacto knife it either breaks when I pull off the
insulation or after I solder it to the board and bend it allow the board to
mount flat against the KX1 board. I don't think stripping it is causing the
problem. Even when I burn the insulation off so there are no nicks in the
wire it breaks when you manipulate it.

I've blown through the supply in the kit. The wire just disintegrates when I
touch or move it. I'll order more on Monday, though I'm thinking I'm going
to need a spool. I may pick up some locally so I can continue building. The
wire seems unnecessarily fancy for this job. I'm sure Radio Shack has some
lamp cord I could use that would accomplish the same thing. Well, maybe
something a little lighter than that. But certainly anything would work,
right?

Any suggestions for handling this wire so it doesn't just fall apart in your
hands?

[Elecraft] [KX1] Manual revision history

2009-04-17 Thread Craig Rairdin
I'm about to launch into building KX1 #1541 which I've had for a while. My
manual is Rev B; I see Rev C is current.

I've searched the Elecraft Web site and can't find a list of changes between
versions of the manual, nor can I find any notes about any modifications
that might be needed to bring an older kit up to the latest specs. I found
"Builder's Alert #1" from April 10, 2006. This particular alert is
incorporated into the errata sheets in my KXB3080.

What I'm curious about is what other changes prompted the update from Rev B
to Rev C? I'd like to be completely up-to-date when I'm done.

RE: [Elecraft] Two K3's, Same Band, Same Time?

2008-10-28 Thread Craig Rairdin
I don't know about two K3's but I can tell you that my K3 was swamped during
Field Day by the phone station operating with a beam pointed away from me,
directly off the end of my dipole, separated by about that 500' distance.
That was CW vs SSB frequency spacing.

We were ok when operating on separate bands; just not on the same band.

For Sweepstakes, we are thinking about using a large multi-multi contesting
station to house two separate single operator efforts. The station has two
yagi antennas on each band, separated by about 500 feet, and element tip to
element tip when beaming the US (antennas pointed in parallel).

The thought has crossed my mind that two K3's in such a situation might be
able to deal with the other signal, even strong and so close, if one station
is at the low end of the band (say 14005) and the other is at the high end
of the band (say 14075).

Would anyone care to weigh in about the likelihood of the receivers
surviving such behavior?

Other way around, but it actually doesn't matter. Any filter can be in any
slot and the DSP will select the right one as you crank the bandwidth down.
The reason for keeping them in some order is so that when you rotate through
them with XFIL they'll make sense (i.e. they get narrower and narrower each
time you press, then when you're at your narrowest the next press takes you
to your widest).

There were only two times when I needed anything other than my fingers to

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Positions - Warranty

2007-12-08 Thread Craig Rairdin
Like I said, I'm not a lawyer. But I can read the English language fairly
well. The first sentence gives the date when the warranty goes into effect:
The date of first consumer purchase (or the date the product is shipped to
the customer). So if I buy the radio and it ships to me on January 1, the
1-year warranty begins on January 1. If I sell it to you on January 5, it
doesn't change anything about the effective date of the warranty.

The fact that the "first consumer purchase" is mentioned has to be read in
context: We're talking about when the warranty takes effect, not who it
covers. Again, the semantics of the English language apply.

The only possible confusion would be over the next paragraph ("What is
covered"). In that paragraph it says the "purchaser" pays the inbound
shipping. That would imply the original purchaser I would think. Again, it's
not saying the radio is only covered while it's owned by the original
purchaser, it's just saying the "purchaser" pays the inbound shipping. The
confusing part is that in the case of Alaska, Hawaii and outside the US and
Canada the return shipping cost is paid by the "owner" -- who could be
different than the "purchaser".

I would interpret this to mean that Elecraft doesn't pay for the inbound
shipping, nor will they pay for outbound shipping outside the continental US
and Canada. The fact that they use "purchaser" and "owner" synonymously
indicates to me that they're not trying to identify the *original* purchaser
but rather they're refering generically to the person who is returning the
radio for repair.

And again, it's not talking about who is covered, it's talking about who
pays the shipping.

So like I said, the warranty is not a contract between Elecraft and the
original purchaser. It's a warranty on the goods sold by Elecraft. It's good
for one year and it applies to all kits and factory-built units. It covers
defective parts and materials, but doesn't cover any shipping except
outbound shipping in the continental US and Canada.

IANAL, YMMV, FWIW, caveat emptor, ad valorem, ad nauseum.

I'm not sure about that .. From the "Repair and Warranty
Information" page:

"Elecraft's 1-Year Limited Warranty*
* This warranty is effective as of the date of first consumer purchase
(or if shipped from factory, date product is shipped to customer). It
covers both our kits and fully assembled products. For kits, before
requesting warranty service, you should fully complete the assembly,
carefully following all instructions in the manual."

First consumer purchase would indicate that the warranty does not go
with the radio.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Positions - Warranty

2007-12-08 Thread Craig Rairdin
The Elecraft warranty isn't specific to the purchaser. It's a one-year
warranty from date shipped from the factory. It applies to the radio, not to
the radio in the hands of the original owner. I'm not a lawyer but I can't
find anything in Song Beverly (CA) or Magnuson-Moss (US) that would indicate
that the warranty terminates when the item is sold. In fact, it appears the
warranty applies to the merchandise for a particular period of time unless
it states that it applies only to the original purchaser.

If the original order was placed by a credit card that doubled the warranty
and the original purchaser sells the radio, why would he care if the double
warranty was lost? If the new purchaser thinks a two-year warranty is
important, then he should take that into consideration. The reason why
credit card companies give away double warranties is because they never have
to pay them (or they do so seldom that it doesn't matter). I wouldn't let
that stand in the way of getting a K3 next week instead of next year.

Remember you're not really selling your position, you're selling your radio
after you get it. Again, Elecraft doesn't need to be involved.

Also, if the person with the original order paid via one of the credit cards

If I were to sell off my K3, which hasn't shown up yet, I would:

A. Ask Elecraft if I sold it to person x, either before or after shipment,
would
they honor the warranty.
B. If they say yes, I would then ask the credit card company if the extended
warranty could be transfered.
C. If the credit card company says yes...then I would market it as a brand
new
K3, factory assembled, with two-year warranty.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Positions

2007-12-08 Thread Craig Rairdin
Just pay the owner directly and have them ship the unit to you when it
comes. There's no need for Elecraft to be involved.

I think it's nuts to just cancel your order when there are people here who
would pay a premium for your position. Put it on eBay. I for one would be
interested to see what it would go for.

On the other hand, the other thing I think is nuts is to sell your position.
These radios are shipping, albeit slowly, and the rate at which they're
shipping is ramping up. The same argument applies to why it would be silly
to pay a premium to get one "early". They're going to be shipping at a
pretty fast pace a month from now. The next thing you know they're going to
be caught up and you'll be able to get one within a few days of placing an
order. But if you want one now and can get one from someone who ordered
before Dayton, you're going to have it pretty darned quick. Even the Dayton
orders should be shipping pretty soon.

Nobody's mentioned it, but non-K3 orders seem to be moving through Elecraft
at a normal pace. I've ordered some K3 add-ons and they shipped the next day
just as one would expect.

Does Elecraft have a position on sale of these delivery positions to third

RE: [Elecraft] On a more technical note.....

2007-12-07 Thread Craig Rairdin
I think the hardest add-on to do after-the-fact is the transverter interface
KXV3. It requires removal of the KIO3 and the side and bottom panels. Based
on my guess about how the second RX board fits, I think adding the KXV3
might also require removal of the second RX.

I don't have the KDVR3 digital voice recorder option so I don't know how
hard that is to install. Otherwise I have all the rest of the options.

If I understand the second RX correctly, it will require removal of the top
and bottom panels and the stiffener. None of that is hard, and none of it
makes it worth waiting for the second RX before building the radio.

Are there any add ons that would be better ordered with a radio at the time

Are the add on modules more like computer cards where you will put the card
in the slot and then activate the feature?

Hello all,

I grew tired of waiting for a K3. Called Elecraft today and they said my
August order would not be shipped out until "after January
sometime." Never heard of ordering a radio and having to wait around six
months for it - maybe longer!

I cancelled my order and asked for my deposit back. To bad Elecraft
can't ship their premier product out the door in a timely manner. And
yes I've been a big fan after building a K2, K1 and KX1.

So now I'll Xmas shop for a new rig! It won't be a K3 - to bad.

And there you have it. The thread has finally looped back to the funny point
I was making when I originally brought this up. :-)

I wasn't complaining about the low resale value of my low s/n K3. I was
answering a question about why I LIKED having a low s/n K3 and felt I needed
some negatives to throw in there. So I made the same joke Thom just did;
that my low s/n K3 will eventually have less resale value than a more recent
K3, but it won't matter as I'll be dead -- implying, of course, that I don't
intend to ever sell the radio, so even my contrived "negative" is not a
negative at all.

Ah, these things are always so much funnier after they've been taken off in
another direction and you get a chance to explain the joke line by line. :-)

As a pilot, I'd be happy to fly S/N 0001 of just about any general aviation
airplane. At Oshkosh this year, Cessna introduced a entry-level 2-seat
airplane that's not going to ship for about two years. They took something
like 720 $5000 deposits in the first two weeks. Go figure.

I placed my K3 order within 15 minutes of the posting of the announcement to
the reflector because I have completely enjoyed my experience with the KX1,
K1 and K2 and wanted to get my hands on a K3 ASAP.

In addition to having it in time for CW SS, it was pretty cool to see one of
the manual errata sheets look like it was copied from my email comments
after building the kit. There's a certain pleasure that comes from plowing
the ground and making it easier for the next bunch of pioneers to move in.
It's like being on the development team but after all the really hard work
is done. :-)

There will come a time when my K3 will be hard to sell because it has a low
serial number. Fortunately, I'll be dead then and I won't care. My kids
already know they're pretty much screwed. They'll inherit a bunch of geezer
gear (ham radio equipment) and of course the Sunbeam toaster museum
(http://www.automaticbeyondbelief.org). Serves 'em right for making fun of
my hobbies. :-)

There's a separate K3 support email address which seems to light up every K3

I'd like separate mode buttons instead of one button that rotates through
modes.

I'd like it to pick a mode based on frequency. If it can do that, I haven't
figured it out yet.

There's no place to engrave my callsign on the clear plastic LCD cover like
there is on the K1 and K2. :-(

When going from 100+ watts down to 5 watts you have to turn the power knob
several revolutions. It would be nice if there was a "QRP" button.

That's about it. I'm not a heavy-duty user so my needs are simple. But
that's what I've found so far. Overall I really like it.

There is a note on Elecraft's shipping status page regarding deposits
that states that K3 orders received with a deposit before approximately
May 14th (which I assume is the 1st batch) will ship before other orders
received during that period. Orders after May 14th will ship in the
order received.

> if that has happened in the first batch, it's really shoddy

Let's clarify what those of us who made a deposit were promised: We were
told if we made a deposit we would be assured of being in the FIRST 200
SERIAL NUMBERS (until those were sold, of course). If only 100 deposits were
made, then Elecraft could ship in order-date order and still be keeping its
promise. If 200 deposits were made and the production run was increased to
300, Elecraft could ship in order-date order but reserve serial numbers
below 220 for deposit-makers and still be keeping its promise.

If more deposits were made than there were units in the first production
run, and if serial numbers < 220 are not being reserved for the first 200
deposit-makers, then Elecraft isn't keeping its promise to those who made
deposits.

Consider the possibility that there were 199 deposits made in the first 1000
orders, then the 200th deposit was made. If Elecraft sends serial number 220
to the 1001st customer, they would be fulfilling the promise to
deposit-makers even if the other 1000 radios get shipped first.

Since we don't know the number of deposits made or the size of the first (or
any) product run, we can't say for sure whether or not this promise is being
kept. We can only give them the benefit of the doubt. Note that if you order
today and make a deposit, there's no benefit other than the good feeling
that comes from helping Elecraft improve its cash flow during a time when
cash flow is dependant on shipping radios that are apparently hard to ship
in quantity.

FW: [Elecraft] [K3] Can you turn a filter off

> occurred to me (they do sometimes), in order to do A/B comparisons
> once I have my K3, can you leave a filter in place, but turn it

Yes.

The last time I tried this I had to then exit the menu and readjust the
width to get it to actually shut off. So if I'm sitting at 400 hz with my
400 hz filter enabled, then go to CONFIG and disable the 400 hz filter, I
would have to exit CONFIG, turn the width up or down one click, then back to
400 hz.

It's my understanding that a firmware change either has been made or will be
made that will allow you to manipulate this in real time. I haven't
downloaded the latest firmware so I'm not sure. And I'm not sure I'm
necessarily understanding the change correctly so I could be wrong.

[Elecraft] Requested pictures: K3 & K2 (plus K1 and KX1)

2007-11-25 Thread Craig Rairdin
Second attempt to send this... I waited an hour and didn't see it come
through. Sorry if you get two copies:

I spent some time shooting a few pictures of my Elecraft gear this afternoon
for people who wanted some size comparisions. There are front, side, and
rear shots of the K2 and K3 and some "family" pictures with the whole gang.

The pictures are here:
http://www.craigr.com/coppermine/thumbnails.php?album=71

Click on the little pictures to see bigger ones, then click on the bigger
ones to see full-size ones. The full-size images have sufficient resolution
to read all the labels.

If you click on the "2007" in the navigation line at the top of the page
(Home > Ham Radio > 2007) you can also get to the page-by-page K3
construction pictures. Go up to the "Ham Radio" category and down into 2006
for page-by-page KX1 construction photos. Back to 2005 for K2 and KPA100
page-by-page construction photos.

Thanks to the interest in Elecraft gear, my "most viewed" images are now K3
photos, including 500 views of the white unopened shipping box sitting on
the floor of my office. This makes me feel a little better as there was a
while there where my daughter's prom pictures had the highest ranking, which
I assume is mostly internet perverts, not family and friends. Hey, I guess
maybe that includes some of you guys, too. Well, if so, welcome back and
check out the K3 pics this time. :-)

I can use the keyboard or paddle for unanticipated manual sending. The
keyboard works great for CW.

Thanks for the info Craig.
My K3 will be here Wednesday and really looking forward to stand alone
digital modes.
It is my understanding that you just have to send CW from the K3
and it converts it to either RTTY or PSK31 for the modes.
Since the Microkeyer will send RTTY or CW with just a keyboard plugged in
and it has memories
I wonder if you have plugged a PS2 keyboard into the Microkeyer
and sent keyboard RTTY,CW and PSK without the need for a soundcard/computer
hookup. It sure will make a compact digital station.

I have the K2 cables for the MicroKeyer. The only connection to the K3 right
now is the key. I want to end up with a complete K2 and K3 setup so I'll
either get another MicroKeyer and cables for the K3 or the MicroKeyer II. I
haven't examined the feature list to see what the newer model offers. I
don't really use many of the features of the MicroKeyer but it works with my
contest logging program (WriteLog) and it's easy to set up.

I have the Elecraft mic and as far as I know it works ok. I used it in SS
and didn't get any negative reports. I'm not much of a SSB op -- SS is about
the only time I hook up a mic. Plus my call is great for CW but is really
bad for phone (try saying November Zulu Zero Romeo really fast). :-)

Nice pics Craig.
I see you have the MicroKeyer hooked up. I assume you brewed your own
connection cables since the website says they are not available til Dec 1st.
How does it work with the radio? Also notice you have a Heil Cable on the
K3, wonder what mic you are using and the results.

Has anyone with both a K3 and K2 taken any side by side photos? Are
they posted anywhere?

If not, then a frontal, top, rear and side view would be interesting.

And, if you want to have the UPS delivery person hold them, that's OK.

RE: [Elecraft] KRX3 2nd receiver

2007-11-24 Thread Craig Rairdin
I assume there will be standoffs to install, so the top and bottom covers
will have to be removed. Based on where the KRX3 sits, you might have to
remove the stiffener that runs across the top. Not sure about that.

The benefit of waiting would be that it could be installed before the
top/bottom covers are put on in the first place. On the other hand, there's
not much work required to remove the covers. I personally wouldn't wait. I
built my K3 when I received it, and have a KRX3 on order.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 - Possible Show Stoppers

2007-11-23 Thread Craig Rairdin
What fan noise? During long runs with lots of transmitting during SS I had
to stick my hand behind the radio to see if the fans were on. They were, and
the top of the radio stayed cool. You couldn't hear them at all.

I can't answer your question about key-up spikes, but my dipole ends 25'
directly above my head and I haven't noticed any effects of RF in the
transmitted audio. I'm only running 100W so that may not mean anything.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3 - Possible Show Stoppers

I am a SSB rag-chew operator and very interested in the K3. Have had many of
the rigs on the market in the last few years and like the features of the
K3. I have 3 questions that may be show stoppers for me.

1. Fan noise: How loud are the fans, what rig do they compare to. In
a long SSB transmission which of the 4 speeds will be engaged? The fan noise
in some rigs is not acceptable to me, like the Icom 706 or
Yaesu Mark-V 200 watt version. A lot of rigs are ok, like the IC-756 PRO,
TS-870, IC-775 or Mark-V Field.

2. RF in Transmitted Audio: My shack is not in an ideal location, it
is on a second floor with my beam antenna over my head, so sometimes
I have issues with RF getting into the transmitted audio. Some
radios work fine (with some work) like Icom & Yaesu, and some have
problems like Ten-Tec. With this said, has anyone tried the K3 in a
high RF environment?

3. SSB Transmit Key-up Spikes: Some solid-state amps do not like key-
up spikes. An example, I have owned two Yaesu FT-920s and my solid-
state amp would not tolerate the key-up spikes in them.

Thanks for your answers,

I'm in Ventura, CA tending a sick brother in the hospital. Looks like I'll
miss Thanksgiving at home. But I talked to the XYL yesterday, and a package

arrived at home. Guess what! My K3 arrived! What's strange is that I did
get a preliminary message about my invoice, but no message saying it had
been shipped. But I've been having horrible problems at this motel with my
email. I could receive, but not send emails. I won't even describe how I'm

sending this--I don't understand exactly why it seems to work, but it
apparently does.

Anyway, I have no idea what my serial number is, as my XYL couldn't find
anything that seemed to resemble it in the box. We were both afraid to have

her dig through it very much and maybe lose a part or something.

Another "good" thing--she saw the enclosed invoice and assumed I only spent
around $1400 for the radio! That was the balance due! I'm not sure I will
tell her the real number!

Oh, and one more good thing--yesterday just happened to be my birthday! Now

how did Elecraft know to have that K3 hit my front porch on that day???
Wayne and Eric are very clever, but I didn't realize they were that clever!

RE: [Elecraft] soldering suggestions?

2007-11-20 Thread Craig Rairdin
I think I used a 1.6 mm tip when building my kits. Your .05" falls between
my 1.2mm and 1.6mm tips so I'm not sure which they might call .05".

You might try turning up the heat a bit, say to 750F.

It shouldn't take 30 seconds to get solder to flow. My normal technique is
to wipe the tip on the sponge to clean it, then apply a little solder to the
tip. The solder on the tip helps heat to flow to the pad and the part faster
than a dry tip. Touch the tip to the pad and the part so that the edge of
the chisel tip is in contact with the pad (the more surface area is in
contact with the pad, the better and faster the heat transfer. The tip
should also contact the part. Apply a little pressure so you get good
contact with the board and the lead. Again, good contact equals good heat
transfer.

I touch the solder to either the opposite side of the lead from the tip, or
to the pad. If I don't immediately get solder flow, I touch the solder to
the tip to wet it and improve the heat transfer, then I can almost always
get solder to flow by touching either the pad or the part.

I've never noticed the flying-solder problem that you've seen. I've never
worn gloves and I haven't been burned even after building all four of the
Elecraft radios and several of the mini-kits. (I guess I shouldn't count the
K3 when talking about not getting burned.) :-)

So I think the secret is to use a little more heat, prime the tip with
solder, make sure you're laying the edge of the tip flat against the board,
use a little pressure, and make sure you have contact with the lead. Touch
the tip if necessary to get the solder flowing.

When it works right you should clearly see solder flowing on the lead and on
the pad, not just one or the other.

Hope this helps. There are others here who are professionals who might give
better advice. I just know that what I'm doing is working.

Subject: [Elecraft] soldering suggestions?

Hi,

Having purchased a K1 kit, but never having soldered before, I've
been working up to it by working on some other kits, such as an
electronic die, a signal generator, and an active null modem. I'm
using a hakko 936 and I have a .05" chisel tip. The solder that
I'm using is kester SN60PB40 #66/44 .025. (It is my intention to
use this solder and the .05" tip when working on the K1.)

There are some peculiarities with soldering that I'm uncertain about.

First is the time required to hold the soldering iron tip to the
component and pc board. When working on the active null modem (from
fox delta), the pc board pad is minute (compared to the velleman
kits) and was appropriately size for the .05" tip. (They are
comparable to the pads on the K1 pc board.) However, only
rarely would the solder flow in the 3 seconds that is suggested
in the K1 manual to avoid damage to components. (I'm applying the
recommendations in the K1 manual to these other kits.) The only
occasions that the solder flowed within 3 seconds was when I'd just
finished soldering a nearby location, for example when working on
a 16 pin socket. The solder tip was clean and silvery; the temperature
was set to 700 degrees (though I did not verify that with a separate
soldering tip temperature guage). Any thoughts on what I might be
doing wrong?

(The velleman kits that I assembled clearly needed a bigger tip than
I was using... 30 seconds was needed to solder some connections. I was
considering them to be mostly practise, as they were my first attempts
at soldering. Surprisingly, the electronic die did work. The signal
generator doesn't smoke, but there are no blinking lights to tell me
whether it is working correctly. )

I also sometimes noticed that, when soldering, a tiny piece of solder
would sometimes fly off the tip of the solder wire and would impact
the soldering iron about halfway up the metal shaft (two inches above
the solder tip). Is this indicative of a static problem? This occurred
two or three times. This made me want to wear gloves in addition to the
eye protectors that I had on.

thanks,
  robert

FWIW I'm a pilot and the transceivers we use in airplanes to communicate

Mine was pretty fresh. The board that contained the programmable ROM was not
sealed in its anti-static bag. It looked to me like they wanted to make sure
it had the latest so they kept it unsealed. On the other hand, by the time I
got it there was an update available.

It's really easy to do the updates. The software that talks to the K3
automatically retrieves the latest software from Elecraft then just takes
over the radio and downloads the update to it. It is effortless.

RE: [Elecraft] Filter Selection

2007-11-16 Thread Craig Rairdin
Yeah you can do that. There's a software update coming (or maybe it's
already out -- I haven't checked recently) that will make it easier. What
you would do is disable the 500hz filter and narrow the DSP to 500 hz, then
go to the CONFIG menu and enable the 500 hz filter. I think (but I'm not
sure) that the new software will immediately drop it in. The software I have
requires that you twiddle the WIDTH knob up or down a notch to make it
recognize the 500 hz filter is available.

My guess is it won't sound much different on a normal night on 40 m, but it
might be different in more crowded band conditions.

Here is a question for anyone having a K3.

You are listening to a CW note on 40 meters at night
with moderate static, maybe S7 is the resting point.

Copying a signal using the standard roofing filter and
the DSP narrowed down to 500hz.

Now you open up the passband on the DSP to 2.7 khz and
activate a 500hz crystal filter.

First - can you do that?

Second - if you can, how much different does it sound?
I'd expect more pleasant listening experience in the
former scenario...

Wondering if a consensus was developing about the
choice of roofing filters.
Seems like there a too many to choose from. Lacking
detailed plots for each
one, I can't believe there is that much difference
between say a 500hz 5
pole and a 400hz 8 pole or a 200 hz 5 pole vs a 250
hz 8 pole. Sure the 5 poles
will have wider skirts but will you be able to hear
the difference?

I admit I enjoyed using a KAT100 at FD, but I wonder
how much value it would be at my station.

For feeding my wire antenna with balanced line, I
suspect I need an external balun, that has to go
someplace, and better to be attached to one of the
tuner inputs. Currently I use a manual MFJ tuner
(with its internal 4:1 balun) to operate my wire
antenna on 30, 40, 80 and 160m. I can imagine the
autotuner being useful here, but I can't envision the
balun to use and how to attach it to the KAT100.

My other antennas are 2 multiband verticals (80/40 and
20/17/15/12/10), and these are nicely matched where I
operate - so not much utility for the KAT100 here.

So will a KAT100 make my QSY more seamless, and what
balun to use and how to integrate it ?

When you tap XFIL to rotate through the filters the discrete FLn indicator
lights up for that filter and also the VFO B display says "FL3 0.40", "FL4
0.25", etc. So you don't really have to remember.

Also my tendency is to use the WIDTH control to just dial it down and not
really think about what the absolute width is. If I can make out the signal
better, I'm happy. But either way (XFIL or WIDTH) the width is displayed.
You don't have to remember what's in what slot.

Also, you only have to take off half the bottom cover to change or move a
filter. It's the easy half IMHO.

FYI: I've been playing with both the 200 Hz 5-pole and 250 Hz 8-pole filters
and so far in my purely subjective tests I can't tell the difference between
them. What I think this means is that if you're not a numbers purist you can
get by with the cheaper 5-pole filter and probably never know the
difference. If performance means everything to you then by all means spend
more for the 250 Hz 8-pole filter and you'll be happy, too.

Pardon my ignorance but I don't understand how your station layout would be
improved with an external ATU. The KAT3 occupies the same space inside the
K3 as the KANT3. An external tuner would result in more, not less, space
being taken outside the radio (albeit remotely mounted), plus you'd have
another cable to route.

There may be something about having a 6m beam that works better with a
remote ATU and that's fine -- I just don't understand how this is all driven
by limited desk space. The same amount of desk space is taken up with the
ATU inside the K3 as outside.

I have the microHam microKeyer and haven't changed any parameters and it's
all but indistinguishable from the K2. The elements of the characters might
be a little shorter or the timing may be slightly different but I just don't
notice it at all.

I have my logging program (WriteLog) talk to the microKeyer as a WinKey
device. I think WriteLog sends ASCII to the microKeyer, so I don't think
there's any timing issues caused by WriteLog. I also have a PS/2 keyboard
plugged into the microKeyer and it sounds the same as sending from WriteLog.

Are you using a paddle or driving it from software? If the latter, make sure
the software isn't generating its own key presses but instead is configured
to use WinKey.

The K1 doesn't require much. I have a little 3A 13.8V power supply from
Radio Shack that has both terminals and a cigarette lighter jack that I can
use for the K1 and a variety of other devices that I normally run in the
car. I made my K1 power cable with a cigarette lighter plug so I can power
it from the car or the power supply.

RE: [Elecraft] K3 Assembly Manual......web or full???

2007-11-10 Thread Craig Rairdin
The Web version has low-res pictures and that makes it smaller. If it helps
any I built my K3 from that version of the assembly manual and the pictures
are sufficiently detailed to determine what you're supposed to do.

There are two places where the pictures are of a different (older? newer?)
version of the RF board (figs 56 and 58), but it's completely obvious what
they're trying to show you (the important components were in the same
location on my board as in the picture; it was two nearby components that
were different). Fig 57 shows the components in the location that matched my
board.

There are pictures of a couple connectors that need to mate when you're
attaching the front panel assembly to the RF board assembly that have plenty
of resolution but the connectors themselves were harder to see on my boards
than they were in the pictures (Fig 54). And it doesn't matter anyway
because that step is difficult no matter what pictures they show you.

There are some pictures very early in the process of locations of standoffs
that aren't very helpful (figures 7 and 9) but it's because they don't give
enough context, not because they aren't of sufficient resolution. If you
refer back to the location of the mixer board and noise blanker board in
figure 1 it will give you a clue where the standoffs go.

Don't forget to check the site for an update after you get your K3. The one
in the box (or the one you printed out today) may be older than the one on
the Web site. Also don't forget to apply the errata.

2007-11-09 Thread Craig Rairdin
> the best part in keeping with the Amateur Spirit...it's Free.

I'm not picking on you Gregg, because I've heard this statement many times.
I just don't understand it.

Is this a veiled condemnation of companies like Elecraft (and TenTec, MFJ,
StepIR, Kenwood, HyGain, Yaesu, Gordon West, HRO, etc. etc. etc.) who charge
money for amateur radio products? Is Elecraft not in sync with the "Amateur
Spirit"? And if not, then wouldn't one have to admit that the "Amateur
Spirit" really doesn't have anything to do with whether or not one charges
for one's product?

I agree that we all have mentors in this hobby and it would be weird if they
charged us for their advice or helping us put up an antenna. But I wouldn't
expect my mentor to pay my way to Dayton, or buy me a rig, or pay for my
vanity callsign. I think the former is just part of normal human
friendships; the latter would be strange.

So I don't think that doing something for free is a defining characteristic
of the "Amateur Spirit".

If anything the Amateur Spirit is about experimentation, building your own
equipment, and serving your community's emergency communications needs. If
you write your own K2 control program or your own logging software, then
that's in keeping with the Amateur Spirit. Whether you keep it for yourself,
give it away, or sell it is irrelevant.

Good idea. But do the right thing and put it on eBay. You'll probably get
more for your position in line than it will cost you for the K3, and someone
else will get a shot at this great radio. Since yours is probably going to
ship any day now, you'll probably even have the radio before the auction is
over, so you'll be able to turn it around quickly for the buyer.

Should there be anyone out there considering canceling their K3 order
or buying another radio because of slow deliveryDON'T DO IT, you WANT
this radio!! For a variety of reasons it has been 2 weeks since I took
delivery of
S/N 23 and I just got it operational yesterday. I haven't actually worked
anyone
yet, I've just been enjoying getting myself familiar with the awesome
receiver!

The receiver is quiet...my K2 is quiet but the K3 more-so. The AGC is silky
smooth
both on SSB and CW. Filters are the stock 2.7 kHz SSB filter and the 5 pole
500
Hz filter for CW and the data modes. These in conjunction with the almost
artifact free DSP I feel are all I will ever need for my operating style,
though I might eventually spring for the 1.0 kHz filter.

As others have observed, I've yet to find a signal that I can't hear on both

the K2
and K3 but I'm sure that will come in due course. It is a real joy to listen

to signals
totally disappear as you tune across them. Audio quality and strength are
excellent
though the high frequency content is a little high for my liking. I haven't
played
with the equalizer yet but I suspect that will solve the problem. Now all I
need
is a 10 watt QSO before I install the KPA!

As far as the build went it was pretty much uneventful. As always, the
Elecraft
construction manual was beautifully written and illustrated...follow the
step-by-step
and you can't go wrong. All of the parts were there and I'm almost to the
point
where I just won't bother to inventory an Elecraft kit (tnx Christine,
Lindsay and
Mariana!). The problems that did arise:

1. I was having difficulty mating J70 on the KANT3 board with P70 on the rf
board. Looked at the connector and found that one of the holes was
plugged. An email to Eric brought a quick reply that that was supposed
to
key the connectors but that the corresponding pin on P70 hadn't been
clipped.

2.) While attaching the front panel to the front panel board it was
virtually
impossible to get the mic connector through the corresponding hole
and keep the rest of the board aligned. The instructions make mention
of
this possibility and suggest "wiggling" the board and panel until they
mate. In this case there just plain wasn't enough wiggle room so I
used
a sharp pocket knife to slightly increase the diameter of the hole
with
  no harm to the panel.

3.) When I reached the "smoke test" stage all was well except that I
COULDN'T TURN THE POWER OFF with the front panel
switch despite the fact that it turned it on...very strange! A note
to K3 support got a quick response suggesting it was probably
a bent pin on one of the connectors between the FP board and
the rf board...not so! There was some more back and forth and
then Wayne asked if I had down-loaded the latest firmware...I
hadn't but that particular problem was solved by turning the
sub receiver rf and af pots fully CCW () don't ask me.
  ask Wayne!

4.) Firmware down load...I purchased the KUSB USB to serial port
interface and it didn't work with my one year old Dell Dimension
3000 running XP. A standard RS232 cable direct to the serial
port worked just fine. I plan to play with the USB configuration
some more and either get it to work or figure out why it doesn't.

And I assure you that the usual terrific Elecraft support is there!

RE: [Elecraft] K3

2007-11-06 Thread Craig Rairdin
It has actually "piqued" your interest, but either way, you're interested,
and that's good. :-)

I did some side-by-side tests with my K2 and K3 tonight and made a couple
interesting observations.

1) Both receivers did a similar job on weak signals. I'm sure the K3 is
better by the numbers but it's hard to find the exact signal on the air to
demonstrate that. I found when a signal faded to unreadable on the K2 it was
also unreadable on the K3 and vice-versa.

2) The K3 has more volume available. There were times at Field Day last year
that I was running full volume on the K2, what with visitors making a racket
and the generator running. (Actually the most distracting thing about the
generator was the smell. We ran biodiesel and it smelled like french fries
all weekend. M French fries). Where was I? Oh, yeah, the K3 can
be cranked up louder.

3) When I disconnect the antenna from the K2 I get a lot of hiss. When I
disconnect the antenna from the K3 it goes silent. Which leads to my next
point...

4) The S-meter on the K2 sat at about S3 when listening to a weak signal.
The S-meter on the K3 generally sat at S0 and bounced around in the S2 or S3
range when my target signal was transmitting.

Finally, this probably won't happen every time you have a problem with your
K3, but a couple days ago I reported that I was losing most of the audio
when I cranked the filter bandwidth below 350 hz, and today version 1.34 of
the MCU software was announced and the problem is gone. So, a) that's pretty
cool, and b) the software to download and install the update to the K3 is
idiot-proof (unless part of your idiocy is that you're not running Windows
-- but even then, OSX and Linux clients are in the works).

To answer my own question: In context of the auto-spot feature of the K3 I
asked:

> without moving the transmitter. Sometimes people answering my CQ's are

It occurred to me today I can just operate split. Set the transmit frequency
into B then I can monkey with A all I want, including using auto-spot to
zero-beat a CQ reply that is off frequency, thus pulling him into the
passband of the filter. So with a button push and a crank of the filter (or
assign the filter setting to one of the programmable buttons) I can zero-in
on an off-frequency caller without losing too much time or concentration.

I suspect it will be even easier when my subreceiver gets here. :-)

I think SS almost demands computerized logging so the sequence numbers are
handled automatically. I use WriteLog and interface to the rig through a
microHam microKeyer. The nice thing about this setup is I can speed up or
slow down by turning a knob. I have trouble sending by hand above about 25
wpm but no problem turning a knob up to 40. :-)

I take pride in the fact while I call CQ at 30 wpm I crank it down to 15 if
you call me at 15. You will be able to copy my "R TU" at the end, but the
QRZ will be back up to speed. Similarly, if you're calling CQ at 35 or 40
you'll get my reply at that speed.

I've been a private pilot for about 17 years. My dad is just learning to
fly. When he and I fly together into busy airspace like O'Hare, he's always
amazed at how I handle the complex communications. The secret is that all
controllers say the same thing in the same order no matter where you go.
Once you know the pattern it's easy to understand them because you're
already anticipating it. Copying contest exchanges at 40 wpm is no
different. You know what's coming so you can anticipate it. I copy
conversational CW in the 20 wpm range (OK, maybe more like 18) but have no
problem with any speed in a contest because I know what's coming.

> Decoders must be useful, the K3 has one
> Are they using the MFJ decoder

I turned on the K3 decoder for the contest and I glanced at it a couple
times when I wasn't sure I heard right. It does a much better job than the
piece of crap MFJ decoder (sorry, "piece of crap MFJ" is an oxymoron; I
shouldn've just said "piece of crap" and you would've known what I meant).

My pet peeve are the guys who send different parts of the report at
different speeds; as if sending their call at 50 wpm is going to increase
their QSO rate. I like to pause for a little longer than normal when I reply
to them just to eat up all the time they saved. Then there's the bozo who
decided not to send his call in the exchange, apparently because I already
know it. That really throws off the trick of knowing what's coming. All of a
sudden I'm getting numbers where I expect a callsign. I had to ask for his
ck and sec again, thus eating way more time then he saved on the next 100
Q's by not sending his call. And what's with the keyers that separate the
elements by nanoseconds instead of dit-widths? They sound like a solid tone.

Enough complaining. :-)

I noticed it when I took the board out of its bag. I don't think it's
assembly; I think it's shipping. They just get smashed by whatever is on
top. No damage; they're just disheveled. Like I said I noticed it but then I
moved on to the next step and didn't think any more about it. Next time I
open the radio I'll line them all up.

You could avoid the problem by convincing Elecraft to ship a "torroids only"
version of the kit. It would be the same kit but without the torroids. You'd
have the joy of winding them yourself and installing them on the board. Of
course you wouldn't get the benefit of factory testing of your finished K3.

I guess it's a matter of taste. I like something that looks like it was
crafted with the care of human hands instead of everything being lined up
perfectly by a heartless robot. It's amusing to me to think that the sales
person that took my order for a K3 could be the same person who may have
wound my toroids. It makes me feel like I'm getting a custom radio. I think
the K3 looks really beautiful.
Mine is a May 1st purchase so it can't be long now.

[Elecraft] K3 and CW SS

2007-11-04 Thread Craig Rairdin
Well I've worked a few of you so far in SS on the K3 including Vic K2VCO and
Craig AC0DS. I'm pretty sure that conveys some kind of blessing upon you.
:-)

It's pretty cool to be scanning down the band, hear a CQ SS, hit the SPOT
button and the radio just instantly zero-beats. I haven't looked yet to see
if there's a way to move the receiver without moving the transmitter.
Sometimes people answering my CQ's are far, far, off frequency and it's nice
to RIT them into the filter bandwidth at least.

One of the things I've noticed is that the rig runs cooler than the K2. With
the K2 if I spend an hour or two calling CQ I can hear that little fan wind
up and the heat sink gets warm. The K3 is just lightly blowing cool air out
the back and you'd never know it if you didn't put your hand back there.

The other thing that's odd that I never noticed with the K2 is there's
something about the sidetone and the QSK that tricks me. I'll punch a
function key in WriteLog to reply to a caller and my brain hears my signal
and thinks it's someone else calling the same guy. I don't know if that
means the QSK operation is smoother or I'm just tired.

Hey there's Craig AC0DS calling CQ on 80m. He just showed up on the
frequency I'm sitting on while I type this email. Too bad I've already
worked him. :-)

[Elecraft] K3 assembly pictures posted

2007-11-03 Thread Craig Rairdin
This message didn't seem to go through on my first attempt last night. Sorry
if you get two copies...

I've posted page-by-page assembly pictures of my K3/100 #25 at my web site:

http://www.craigr.com/coppermine/thumbnails.php?album=70

To view the pictures in order make sure you sort by file name, not title or
date. (Click the "+" sign to the right of "file name".) That might be the
default view.

The pictures are based on the Rev B assembly manuals. They are changing all
the time so the page numbers might not agree with yours when you get it. On
the other hand, I don't know if these pictures are as handy as the K2 or KX1
pictures I have at my site since there aren't many tricky steps or confusing
components. But they're fun to look at if you're waiting for a K3. There are
69 high-resolution pictures there; more than enough to drool over. :-)

[Elecraft] K3 S/N #25 is alive

2007-11-02 Thread Craig Rairdin
I just finished the basic QRP K3. I still need to do the PA. Total building
time was 5 hours and 48 minutes. I didn't waste a lot of time inventorying
parts up-front. Only 37 minutes was dedicated to counting screws. I
inventoried the "miscellaneous" bag, which has almost all the hardware, and
the front panel bag, which has some more hardware for the front panel.
Because of the way the K3 is kitted, the rest of the subassemblies can be
easily compared to the parts list as they're needed.

As is my custom I took a picture at the end of every page but frankly it's a
little boring when you're not watching the number of parts mounted to the
board grow as you flip each page. I'll probably post them at my site just to
be thorough, but I don't know if they'll be very helpful. The photos in the
manual are all you really need.

The build time also includes a couple of re-do's as I tried to handle a
situation where I didn't have the right screws for the job. The manual
called for two 3/8" screws, but I didn't have any of those. Looking at an
older version of the assembly manual I decided to substitute 3/16" screws.
Then after talking to the experts we concluded they must've substituted 1/4"
screws in my kit. So I removed the side panel and replaced the 3/16" screws
with 1/4". Then when I was almost done I found out I was two 1/4" screws
short so off came the side panel and back went the 3/16" screws to free up
the 1/4" for their true purpose. All of this is being reported back to
Elecraft so your kit probably won't have this issue. :-)

Hopefully I'll get the PA finished tomorrow and have the rig on the air for
CW SS.

The fact of the matter is that no amount of whining is going to change
anything. The more we whine, the more we whine. The product won't
necessarily be better, the building experience won't be sweeter, the radio
won't have more performance. It will just happen when it happens. Nothing is
changed when one person complains to the other 3000 of us on the reflector.

I finally came to the conclusion that I either needed to ask for a refund or
just wait. I think that's good advice.

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 Problem and new elecraft kit proposal

Hello everyone here.
Last week , I posted a mail on this list , reporting a problem with my K2.
Strange behaviour , sometimes loosing all the commands on the front pannel ,

sometimes loosing RX sensitivity , and recovering it by pushing band+ and
band - , I even found the K2 in TX mod e, mode where it decided to go by
itself.
Today I opened the box , and immediatly found the problem origin :

There is a unused RS232 connector hole in the rear pannel. A mouse entered
by this hole and used the K2 as an high cost toilet. I took all the boards
off the box and started to clean them. Tomorrow I will reassemble it , and I

hope all the problems will be gone away.
So U all K2 users , U should put the connectors in the options holes to
avoid this pb.

I suggest to the Elecraft crew a new kit:

K2BUG: ultrasonic board to avoid mouses , spiders ect... :0)

#66 went to a "beta tester" who was to build it and give comments. I
personally think that was the only one that shipped last week, or if more
did, that they went to a small number of pre-arranged test-builders. I think
the first real batch goes out this week. I believe I'm in that batch and my

It's prohibitively expensive and adds significant complications for the
manufacturer, who has to maintain revision information per-page. The
solution of offering a downloadable PDF of the manual is simpler for the
manufacturer and solves the problem for the relatively small number of
people who care about having the very latest software rev and manual.

If I was in charge I would provide an electronic manual supplemented by a
thorough quick-reference booklet like the ones from
www.niftyaccessories.com. Users could print the manual if they wanted, but
otherwise I wouldn't have killed as many trees, Al Gore would be happy, and
we'd save $10/unit sold over distributing a seldom-read manual.

Oct 8 was a holiday in the US and there was no mail service. By choosing

Only in America would we celebrate October 12 on October 8. But that's a

2007-09-29 Thread Craig Rairdin
I regret adding to the noise but I didn't see this in the FAQ and I'm
curious about it.

Are you making any effort to ship the K3's in the order that orders were
received or is there some other algorithm being applied? (For example, it
might depend on what options a person selected, what part of the
country/world they live in, or some other consideration.)

Are kits being shipped before (or after) assembled K3's? Or does it not
matter?

I realize this is a trivial question, but for those of us who take some
degree of pride in low serial numbers, the answers to these questions would
be at least interesting.

There's a thriving K3 group on Yahoo Groups:

move the K3 traffic.

This discussion has been squashed before and every time it comes up so it
seems somewhat pointless to bring it up again. I just point out the other K3

We all know the relative merits of a Web-based forum. I wonder if we'll be
able to keep this thread short this time around since it's all been asked

One thing I HAVE done is collected credit card payments in advance for a
product that didn't ship on its ship date. It's my understanding that when
you go beyond 30 days late you need to send a written notice to those who
paid by credit card with an updated ship date and the offer to cancel with a
full refund. You have to repeat that 30 days after the new date passes. I
may be mistaken; it may be that you only have to notify those who ordered by
mail. I can't remember if the rule comes from the credit card companies or
the US Mail.

I know it is challenging to bring out a new product, and especially to do it
under the scrutiny of your customers. I'm just once again pointing out that
while Elecraft is a great company they're not perfect. I think people are
well within their rights to complain about the delays. I'm not complaining;
just defending the rights of others to do so.

Since that recommendation is already in the FAQ for the list, apparently it
is impossible. Unsubscribe procedures are also spelled out in several
places, yet we have a thread on that topic. The request that we not chide
other members for excessive, off-topic, or impolite posts is also in the
FAQ, yet those are frequent topics of discussion. The FAQ also includes
suggestions for dealing with the volume of traffic.

There will always be users at every level, from n00bs to h4x0rz. The sooner
we either just accept that or learn to procactively adapt to the
inconveniences presented by other internet users, the happier we will all
be.

This is only true if package size isn't a priority. If it is, then it's a
feature that, as you say, has to be designed-in before other less important
considerations are implemented.

Whatever your priorities are in design should determine what else you can
do, and how you should do it. Elecraft values effortless portability over a
completely simple (one control per function) user interface. That may not
match your priorities. They could just as easily say that you're thinking
backwards because you could end up with a rig that is too big to be easily
portable.

So the issue isn't backwards thinking, it's different design priorities.

I have limited space and relatively frequent transportation of the radio. So
it works for me.

I think the issue for the tree-huggers is to multiply that by 100 million
households in the US and you're talking about a lot of wasted power and a
lot of global warming. Like the ad I heard yesterday telling you to put your
cream and sugar in the cup before adding coffee in order to save on the need
for disposable stir sticks, the idea is to get everyone to unplug to save
the planet.

Of course one new nuclear power plant would generate more than enough power
to heat your coffee AND keep your TV on AND it would destroy less ozone than
a coal-burning power plant, but we can't have any of that.

Anyway the solution to all this is to do what Al Gore does: Just buy some
carbon offsets, stick some kind of colored ribbon magnet on the back of your
SUV to show you love the planet, and quit worrying about it.

I would think you'd be interested in the improved receiver and filters,
espcially for rag-chewing when signal quality isn't ideal.

I don't do digital modes, either, but one of the features of the K3 I'm
looking forward to is its ability to decode/encode digital modes without a
computer. One of the reasons I haven't bothered with digital is not wanting
to take the time to figure out how to do it. Being able to just tune in a
signal and go might give me the opportunity to try a mode I haven't been
able to try before.

I'm a light-weight contester so the second receiver option allows me to take
a step up in the contesting world without much effort.

The 6m capability gives me a new band to explore. This will be my first
6m-capable radio.

I think the common theme is that the advanced features and specs of the
radio for a person who doesn't normally put a lot of demands on a radio give
me the opportunity to try something new without a lot of extra effort or
equipment. It seems like that might be something appealing to you.

RE: [Elecraft] Is the K3 capable of ESSB?

2007-08-12 Thread Craig Rairdin
As a CW op with no dog in this race, I wonder what makes splashing a 2.1 KHz
to 2.7 KHz wide voice signal across the band morally right but 6 KHz or more
morally wrong. Are those who are opposed to 6 KHz-wide SSB doing everything
they can to narrow their bandwidth down to as few hz as possible? That is,
is anyone working on NSSB (narrow SSB) out of a sense of moral outrage over
everyone wasting all that bandwidth at 2.x KHz? If not, then isn't the whole
argument just a spitting contest with no technical or moral merit?

(Sorry, I argue religion for a living and it's often the case that the
opposition is practicing the very thing they're arguing against, just in a
different direction or order of magnitude. I can't help but wonder if the
same logic doesn't apply here.)

RE: [Elecraft] K2 for a newbie HAM

2007-08-08 Thread Craig Rairdin
There are a couple important things to do:

1) Get the right equipment. Read the information at the Elecraft site and
get a real soldering station with a variety of tip sizes and an adjustable
temperature control. Get the right solder. Get one of those spring-loaded
solder suckers for fixing your mistakes. The bulb-shaped ones don't work.
(If you can afford a real desoldering station then that's even better, but
it's overkill.)

2) Read everything you can find at the Elecraft site about proper soldering
technique. Order a minikit or two to assemble first -- maybe the dummy load,
which is dirt-simple and is useful for tuning the radio when you're done.

If you have a good soldering iron -- not the fixed-temperature cheap Radio
Shack model -- and you have a good idea what you're doing, you should be OK.

You'll need some kind of magnifying glasses or one of those lights with the
magnifying lense built in. And you'll need something to deal with static --
like a static mat and ground strap all properly grounded.

Good luck and have fun!

Folks -

I am very new to amateur radio and have a question - am looking at my first
rig and leaning towards a k2 (would begin without the additional 100W's).

I do not have much experience with electronics but am (in general) very
handy - is this something that someone with little to no experience can do
if they are careful? Or is assembling the kit probably not a good way to go
for someone with limited experience.

Any opinions are appreciated in advance -

Thanks!

> While as a young EE engineer at Eastman Kodak, in

When I worked for Rockwell Collins (the old Collins Radio Company) they had
a "Productivity Improvement Program". We had to submit ideas for posters to
be put up around the building promoting productivity. I drew a sketch of an
engineer at his desk, hard at work. His hand was outstretched toward his
waste basket to toss a sheet of paper. On the paper you could read "Memo:
Productivity Improvement Program."

At another company I was on the executive committee that had to review the
ideas from an employee suggestion program. All the ideas were completely
lame but we were required to choose one each week and give the person a cash
reward, then implement the idea. The ideas were so dumb it became completely
demoralizing for the whole company. Of course the president of the company
(who was usually on the golf course) and the HR department kept it going
long after it lost its usefulness.

Back on topic: I will send a hank of appropriate solder to any new K2/K1/KX1
kit buyer for $9.95 and the cost of shipping.

I wasn't going to contribute to the noise, but with people questioning the
relative importance of size I wanted to add one voice in favor of small.

I work from home. I have two computers under my desk and two monitors on
top. My "shack" is an area about 24" wide and 24" deep on one of the arms of
my wrap-around desk. My K3 will be under my K2 which is under my K1 which is
under my KX1. The only reason (ONLY reason) I don't own any cool vintage
Collins equipment (which was made here in Cedar Rapids and is where I used
to work) is because I don't have room for it.

I know I'm the only one to whom size matters. We all have different reasons,
I'm sure, but I'm willing to bet that size, weight, appearance, cost, and
other "superficial" issues are at least as important, if not more important,
to many of us than are receiver sensitivity, band stacking registers,
roofing filters, and other features and performance issues. To make
supposedly "objective" observations about the relative merits of any one
feature or benefit of the K3 or any radio is to be myopic at best and
narcissistic at worst.

I've never understood the fascination with these connectors. They seem

move around too much especially with a heavy-conductor wire hanging off

friction.

speculation? I ask because I ordered on line and received a confirmation
via email on June 7th. At that time and for about another week or so,
the web site was indicating orders were still being taken for the second

LOL. This is the kind of blind, pie-in-the-sky loyalty and defensiveness I'm
talking about. :-) I love Elecraft as much as anyone but they're not
infallible and blameless. Like I said before, my last order was really
messed up, and my last email to Lisa regarding my K3 order has gone

the Internet, George Bush, or global warming for Elecraft's occassional

they're people. :-)

Or it could be Hillary Clinton's fault. :-) Yeah, that's probably it.

Excuse me? You buy a product from a company, pay 50% up front to help the
company out, and you get no acknowledgement from the company that a) your
order has been received or b) a receipt for your advanced payment. And you
excuse this on account they are busy?

I'm sorry, but I find that unacceptable. American companies pride
themselves on their great service - this isn't even common courtesy let
alone good customer service.

How long does it take to send a non-automated email? Someone at Elecraft is
keeping a track of all the orders (otherwise the'd have no idea of demand)
and an email takes maybe 30 seconds extra per order. Even if they have
10,000 orders (which I doubt very much), that is 83 hours of work, spread
over the last 2 months equates to about a quarter of a person. Of course,
automate the process and you don't even need a quarter of a person.

And of course, telling a customer that you have his order and his money
saves you having to answer the phone when the same customer calls in to
complain - except that doesn't take 30 seconds!

Or is it that we Brits now have a better sense of what makes for good
service than our American friends?

Dave and all,

I can add emphasis to what Gary has said, and I experience it in only a
small way - responding to emails requesting status of kits I have here
for repair/upgrade/build etc., does take considerable time and energy -
multiply that by a very large factor (your guess for the number of K3
orders) and you have a lot of time just to respond to order
status/confirmation requests.

While all of us who have ordered K3s have the same questions, I do not
have either written or email confirmation of my order. I do know that
everyone at Elecraft is very busy communicating with the beta testers,
getting all the production stuff in order, along with their normal
activities, and they are putting in a lot of overtime hours to get it done.

Have patience, try not to bother them any more than necessary, and in a
couple weeks the flood will be cleared and things will restore to
something more normal.

Craig,

While you can feed ladder line directly to anything (including a KX1),
the enclosure and whatever is connected to it can create unbalance on
the ladder line. The result is that the antenna tuning will change
depending on how the KX1 couples to ground - the antenna will behave
differently with the KX1 running on batteries compared to running from a
power supply.

It is wise to use a 1:1 current balun to decouple the ladder line from
those 'ground effects'. Use a 4:1 current balun if it provides a better
match to the antenna. An Elecraft BL2 is ideal, it has a switch so you
can change from 1:1 to 4:1 and use whichever matches better.

I should try it... I always add a balun.

Does anyone know a source where I can obtain one of those BNC to twin lug
adapters for the KX1? I am thinking of puuting up a G5RV fed with 300 ohm
ladder line.

Thanks and very 73/72!

Keep an eye on eBay. There has been a regular stream of K2's up there. I
haven't been watching the selling prices closely, but you can expect to pick
one up for at least 20% less than the kit price and perhaps as much as 30%
off. You may end up with an accessory or two that you don't want, but you'll
save a lot of money vs. buying a kit and having it built.

The K2 isn't that hard to build. If it's been working for the previous
owner, it will work for you. You can ask for close-up pictures if you want.

The K2 is a lot different than say the old Heathkit days. With all the
point-to-point wiring and stacks of components soldered to terminals, the
skill of the builder could dramatically affect appearance and performance.
And I don't think I ever built a Heathkit that worked right when I got done.
They required a lot of debugging after they were complete. With the Elecraft
kits you just build them and they work (with a few exceptions as some here
will testify). But the point is I don't think there is as much variability
in quality as you might find with other kits and homebrew projects.

Of course, they're designed that way. :-)

Subject: [Elecraft] K2 or K3

As some of you know, I've been looking at putting together a K2
station for portable RTTY/PSK31 operation. However, as I am looking
at the cost differences, I am now wondering if I might better off with
a K3. Here is my dilemma:

I am disabled and unable to solder because the medications I am on
make my hands shake like crazy. The person who normally builds kits
for me is unable to take on this task due to family and work
commitments. I have contacted three of the builders in the Elecraft
community and have received quotes ranging from $350 to $450 to do
what I want.

Therefore, by the time I buy the kits from Elecraft and pay for
assembly, I am looking at $1270 to $1370 for a basic K2 with what I
need for data ops.For $1399, I can get a K3/10 with the same
features plus many extras and better performance.

Maybe I should also look for a used K2 but I am real picky on build quality.

Any advice guys?

Thanks

[Elecraft] K2 FD report

2007-06-25 Thread Craig Rairdin
N0MA used my K2/100 for its CW station this year. We used a 130' dipole up
about 50', fed with ladder line to a 4:1 balun then to the KAT100. It loaded
up just fine on all bands.

The guys on the phone station wanted/needed to run their cool Alpha 1500W
amplifier (to make up for a lack of operating skill?) so that cut our points
in half and caused some interference when we were operating on the same
band. They had a 20m fixation so that helped... we were able to work 15, 40,
and 80 without interference. On 20m I turned off the AGC and the pre-amp and
that seemed to help. I still had trouble hearing weak signals over the hash
from the phone station but any moderately strong signal was OK. That made
CQing difficult but S&P was a breeze.

Once again the 100hz filter made the bands seem nicely organized and quiet.
I was doing a little demo for some guests and pointed out how I could work a
station, then move 500 hz up and wait and sure enough there'd be somebody
there calling CQ. Then I'd switch off the filter and you'd hear the
cacophony going on around you. Back to 100 hz and quietly work the station
and move on to the next.

I expected my K2 to not be bothered at all by the 1500W phone station
located about 300' off the end of (and aligned with) my dipole. I was a
little disappointed but we got along with it OK. We won't be at the top of
the results, what with our points cut in half and all, but we'll get a bonus
for our biodiesel generator that provided steady power and the smell of
deep-fried chinese food all weekend. :-)

It fits with the old-fashioned-ness of the hobby. The other embarrassing
word we use is "Elmer" to refer to a mentor.

In terms of its reputation and usefulness, ham radio seems stuck in the 50's
to me. Technology-wise it's pretty up-to-date but for the most part it's a
quaint throwback to simpler times. The name "ham" may be odd and
embarrassing, but people do know what it means.

I don't have enough data to draw that conclusion. Have you ordered yours

As I thought was obvious, both this post and my previous one were intended
to be humorous. :-) I assumed the OP was at least partially tongue-in-cheek
as well.
