[Elecraft] Introdution.

2009-12-11 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

my name is David Quental, calls CT1DRB, OK8RB, CU3HQ and now T6AG.

Some days ago I bought a new K3 to me, however just next April will see
it. At that time I will assemble.

Now I am in Afghanistan using call T6AG, it seems for states propagation
is not so good and due to diferent localtimes it is not easy to have
qso's with states. Anyway, I will be here until April and for sure they
will have enough time to work States.

Best regards and till next email.

[Elecraft] Anti-static stuff to assemble K3.

2009-12-12 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

like I have wrote previously, I will assemble my K3 at April next year,
however I have not anti-static stuff yet, I have found site that sells
anti-static stuff, like mats, gloves and ESD wrist strap. Could be
useful to buy all stuff, even that ESD gloves to assemble K3 ?

Here is the site:

http://www.leiritronica.com/electronica/index.php?cPath=139_147

Sorry, it is in portuguese language, but stuff is pretty visible.

Best regards and till next email.

2009-12-13 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

tks for your replay emails and best regards.

Ok I will not buy gloves according to your opinions, I will safe some
money :) , however I have another doubt:
at my apartment I have not a central earth connection, but some
electricity plugs (mainly from kitchen) have the earth cable attached to
plugs (of course not in same position of 220 Volts :) ), could I attach
terminals from mat and wrist strap to that earth connection from
electricity plugs ???

Best regards and till next email.

Tks for your pic, however that hand-strap, that I have sent website, has
a resistor of 1 mega ohm inserted. So I need to pay attention to mat
because has not that resistor.

[Elecraft] Elecraft K1.

2010-01-13 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

as you already know I have a new K3 just waiting for me to be assembled,
it misses about 3 months to do it. If no change to use K3 at home in a
normal way, because I have not antennas on my building because of my
"lovely neighbours", I am thinking to get an elecraft K1 for portable
operation and use K3 for contests outside home.

It is not for now, because I am in Afghanistan, but maybe end of the
year that I will need a K1, my intention is to buy an used K1 from an
elecrafter from this list, if possible of course.

K1 seems to be the perfect rig for portable operation since I do
exclusively CW.

If anyone pretend to sell an used K1 let me know, maybe later on we can
talk.

Best 73.

[Elecraft] Kenwood ts850sat for an Elecraft K1.

2010-01-19 Thread David Quental
Hello elecrafters,

best regards to all. Yesterday there was condo meeting at my building
and again was required permission to install antennas on my building,
again answer was NO. End of story and I must carry on.

So I am doing a crazy propursal, I have a Kenwood ts850sat that will not
need because of new Elecraft K3, so I do not mind to exchange 850sat
with a second hand K1. I should inform you that it is at my parents
home, just using on reception (my father is not ham) but time to time he
switchs on rig and let it on during some time, just to avoid internal
problems. It has also all cw filters available, even from inrad. I do
not know exactly second or third hand value of 850sat but I guess that
it worths more than K1 value.

Best regards and till next email.

[Elecraft] Question about K1.

2010-10-07 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

I have a nice K1, it works very well on 7/10/14/21mhz. Lately I had idea to
buy a KFL1-2 module to add 2 more bands to my K1. However it seems,
according to manuals, that if I want to use, for instance 80 or 17 (bands
that I want to add), I should swamp both Filter Boards, is that true or is
there any way to use at same time both Filter Boards ??

Any help will be welcome.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 firmware with APF and SSB improvements -- any takers?

2010-11-13 Thread David Quental
Hello Wayne and all Elecrafters,

I am a CW operator 100 % of time, so I tested, and still test, the APF
function.

Due to the fact that I have a simple mobile antenna in my balcony I do
not RX strong CW signals, however I did a qso with HA4FF some minuts
ago. In fact APF improves signal quality if CW is steady. With my
antenna limitations, with bad RX, it amplifies also some noise, it seems
for me. However despite my antenna situation APF works fine. Maybe mid
of December I will have an MFJ-1786X.

I am not confusing and performed all tests, however doing TX gain cal in
all bands manually I always get a power of 0.0 watts. I get power when
use ATU, then I see RF level that is power out. Just waiting for tips
from you and Elecraft as well.

[Elecraft] First impressions of my Elecraft K3.

2010-05-15 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

since some time ago I have my K3 assembled, almost a month, and just
yesterday I put it on work during a Portuguese Monument activation under
call CQ0ODX/P. K3 works everyday, however due to severe antenna
restrictions I am not able to test it in a normal antenna situation.

Yesterday I did my operation inside my car and there are a lot to
improve inside it to give me a confortable operation. Maybe using a
portable table will be better, however during rainy time, like
yesterday, it would not the perfect tool to use :) :) .

Despite big lacks of my side, it was my first operation inside my new
car, I was able to do 150 qso's on 30 meters using a 30m dipole. First
configuration was using dipole inverted shape, swr was 1:1, so no need
to use ATU and longest qso was to ZL2IFB, by the way, we started
operation around 8:00 o'clock, maybe a bit later.

K3 worked very nicely, was very easy to operate with and signals were
very easy to listen up. Time to time I needed to use RIT but that was
easy and pleasante too. At same time I used my winkey and again K3 had
no problems.

K3 is very suitable for activations like I did yesterday, its ergnomics
are very friendly and operation is very easy and smoth.

Sadly I did not pictures (I was all the time doing qso's or calling, so
no time for pictures) however CT1CQK and CT1FMX did pictures and films,
later I will give you link for both.

Best 73 and till next email.

[Elecraft] TV and computer interferencies - K3's fault ?

2010-05-18 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

yesterday evening I was calling on 17m when a lady warned me that I was
doing interferencies on her TV and computer. According to our ham law
when another Comm service claims against a ham interference we should
stop our activity until our Portuguese FCC cames and check ham
conditions here. She did not clarify me, and I did not ask, what was
wrong with computer. I know that she has a cable tv connection, but for
sure her TV-set was disconnected from cable system.

So I stopped and after a phone to CT4RK he advised me to stop my TXs and
call Portuguese FCC technicians. During our phone conversation he said
that deeply doubts that cause of interferencies could be due K3.
According to your K3 experiency could you say me if could be possible
that rig could cause that type of interferencies ???

My actual HF antenna is a 7m long simple wire attached to a 1:9 balun in
a spiderbeam pole through my window, very near building as you could
imagine.

Best regards.

I have already talked with our FCC and my neighbors should complain to

cause of interferencies is my neighbors TV-set and computer they will
pay services :)

In the past I had a very curious story about tv interferencies, when I
worked in shifts I remenber to arrive home, after a night shift, when a
guy approched and asked me:
are u ham ? I said yes and he replayed that last night his tv-set
received a lot of TVI, I answered him that I was in shift, so no
possible to be me, anyway he said that fault was mine and a complain was
going to our FCC.
2 days later I was checking his tv-set installation and was all a mess,
a coax not connected to building antenna cable, bad connection between
coax and tv-set etc etc etc, at that time I fixed and warned about bad
conditions.
2 days later I met guy and he said me that I was full of reason but even
that way he was about to complain :) :) :) :) . I never had problems
with our FCC cause of neighbors :) :) .

[Elecraft] Atu problems on 6 meters.

Hello all,

today I was on 6 meters doing qso's, all went fine with antenna, a mobil
one. Sudenly I saw that SWR was increasing a lot, around 3:0, full
scale, and stoped TX. Pressed ATU TUNE botton but SWR was always high,
so I came home.

Applied my dummyload and all is fine in all bands except 6 meters, even
with Transmitter Gain Calibration test it fails because of high swr on 6
meters:

Calibrating at 24,930 MHz
StopTune: Unexpected response 'TQ1;' to ''. State 77. Retrying
Calibrating at 29,000 MHz
StopTune: Unexpected response 'TQ1;' to ''. State 77. Retrying
Calibrating at 52,000 MHz
SWR 7.3:1 is too high for calibration

Dummy load is attached to AN1 I can confirm it.

[Elecraft] Ceramic microphone connections.

2011-08-05 Thread David Quental
Hello all,

I have bought a nice Ceramic microphone to use with my K3, however I am
in doubt how to connect it. The microphone has 4 wires:
a ground wire;
a white wire;
a red wire;
a black wire.

According to mic schematic, the ground and white wires belong to capsule
polarity (white for + and ground to ground symbol).

How should I connect these wires inside mic jack ?

White wire to pin nº 8 and ground wire to pin 7 or 8 ?

And about red and black wires, where should I connect them ?

Should I consider it as an electret mic or a dynamic one ?

rechargeable batteries at my own. What could be better, buy more
rechargeable batteries or a small battery, however bigger than AA
batteries, to operate with ?

Any answer will be welcome here.

Best 73 to all.

Re: [Elecraft] Batteries for K1

2011-04-21 Thread David Quental
Hi all,

tks for all your answers to my question.

I have bought today a 7AH-12 battery. It is small and weight is not so
bad. Maybe next weekend I will use it with my K1.

Again, tks for all your answers and best 73.
