[Elecraft] KPA-1500 issues
I've experienced some of these same issues with my KPA-1500. In addition, sometimes the amp will switch to stand-by for no apparent reason, on 6 meters the AT won't tune a 1.7 to 1 SWR under 1.5 to 1, and one of the exhaust fans got a good deal noisier after about 25 hours of operation. My amp is back at Elecraft for service as I write. 73, Dick- K9OM On Mon, Nov 26, 2018 at 5:15 PM K9MA wrote: > This was my first serious contest effort with the new amplifier. [Elecraft] KPA-1500 ATU not working well
I'm wondering if anyone else is having problems with their KPA-1500 ATU on 6-meters? My antenna is cut for 50.100 and has a 2.2:1 SWR at the 50.313 FT-8 frequency. The very best the ATU will do is to lower the SWR from 2.2:1 down to 2.0:1 which is almost no improvement. The 2.0 to 1 is with exciter power, when I switch the KPA-1500 to operate and transmit at 1,200 watts the SWR increases to aprx. 2.2 to 1 and the KPA-1500 will fault and trip off occassionally. Hoping there's a fix for this. I'm using the latest KPA-1500 firmware. [Elecraft] Ed Re: KPA-1500 Question
Hi Ed, Thanks for all the RTTY Qso's! I read your post on the Elecraft reflector with interest. I have two different sets of Bose QC-15 noise canceling headphones, and when I use either one, and running on CW or RTTY, the fan noise from my KPA-1500 is loud and annoying when the Fan hits level 2, and extremely loud and extremely annoying when the Fan it hits level 3. It's hard for me to copy CW signals when the Fan hits level 3 and extremely difficult to receive when the Fan hits level 4. Many people have complained that the Yaesu Quadra has noisy fans when transmitting and running at full speed, the fan noise from my KPA-1500 is louder at Fan level 2 than my Quadra fans are when operating at full speed. Also, when the KPA-1500 fans are at Level 2 the noise bleeds through my noise canceling headphones louder than the fan & blower noise from my Alpha 8410. So either your noise canceling headphones work better than mine or your "field-test" KPA-1500 is a quieter than my production model. Please advise what type of noise canceling headphones your using? Thanks & 73, Dick- K9OM From: Ed W0YK Anecdotally,? I've operated several RTTY contests with a field-test KPA1500 and it just loafed along.? I didn't critically examine fan noise.? [Elecraft] KPA-1500 fan speeds and fan noise
I think the KPA-1500 is a very nice amplifier and am happy to won one. That said, I'd like to see Elecraft find ways to reduce the fan noise, and I believe there are solutions, such as: in "Fan 1" mode: rather than have Fan 1 turn on at full speed with full noise, I'd much prefer to have all 3 fans turn on and run at 1/3 speed as the noise should be reduced while the air flow would be about the same. When the 3 similarly sized fans on my Yaesu Quadra run at slow speed while the amp is in stand-by or receive mode they are pretty quiet and only generate about the same amount of noise as many desktop computers, and when the Quadra is transmitting the fans go to high speed and produce about the same amount of noise as the KPA-1500 when it's running in the "Fan 2" position. I imagine Fan positions 3-4-5 are needed because the heat sink in the KPA-1500 is relatively small because the physical size of the amp is small? 73, Dick- K9OM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] K3 Noise Blanker
I really enjoy my K3s. That said, I agree with K9MA's post that "I have never found the K3 noise blanker to be effective". Though I would probably modify the word "never" to " very seldom". I realize that a great deal of work has gone into making the K3 NB all it can be but it needs improvement. I've found the NB on other radios to work a a great deal better reducing both impulse and even the "Electronic generated noise" mentioned by K9YC. There has to be a way to improve the K3 NB and I sincerely hope that more work will be done on this needed improvement. 73, Dick- K9OM On 9/3/2017 9:18 AM, K9MA wrote: > I have never found the K3 noise blanker to be effective. > BTW, the K3 noise blanker uses a filter with a bandwidth of about 100 kHz. It's important to understand that there are many kinds of noise. Noise blankers are most effective on IMPULSE NOISE, which is the result of something arcing, usually in the power system, but also electric fences and neon signs. Most of the residential noise we hear today is ELECTRONIC noise, generated by switch-mode power supplies and microprocessors.? Noise blankers must be very different to suppress this sort of noise. [Elecraft] K3S USB audio output needs to be adjustable in Menu
Hello Elecraft, When feeding the audio from the K3S USB port to the CPU, the K3S audio level is extremely high and way too hot for good performance on many digital modes. Example, even with my CPU's sound card set at the lowest possible level of "01" my K3S is hitting the JT-65 software with a super strong signal that is much higher than the software wants to see and performance is degraded. The same is true when operating RTTY using MMTTY or 2Tone software. The USB audio output on the K3S needs to be adjustable in the K3S Menu as it was on the K3 Serial port. As was posted on the Amps reflector a few months back: > The LDMOS devices are designed to tolerate 65:1 SWR, 3:1 probably > wouldn't be a problem so where is the need for a tuner? Most ham antennas don't exceed 3 to 1 SWR even on the band edges. New amps that are constructed with LDMOS finals should be able to handle nearly all antennas without a tuner. Operating a legal limit amp into an antenna with an SWR greater than 3 to 1 should be avoided for many reasons, such as: poor radiation efficiency, harmonics, RF in the shack, RFI, etc. 73, Dick- K9OM In a message dated 4/1/2017 8:48:28 P.M. Then 25% of the power is reflected. Note: at 10:1 you reflect 67% of the power so that means 500 W reaches your antenna and 1000W is dissipated in the Drain-Source junctions of your expensive RF transistors! Clearly, a practical solid state amplifier capable of tolerating, say, a 3:1 SWR needs an autotuner. (Very few of us have the luxury of perfectly matched antennas across all bands.) That said, the autotuner should permit maximum flexibility, including multiple settings for the same band. I'd like the KPA-1500 designed for 2kw so it will easily make 1,500 watts in "run" mode all weekend long on all modes, including RTTY. Too many of today's "legal power amps" often won't make legal power. Note also the comments about receiver IF bandwidth of 500 Hz except in extreme cases. Even in big RTTY pileups such as I encounter sometimes in DX locations, Again, I've anecdotally found that 500 Hz decodes better most of the time. I seldom go lower. This also implies turning off the K3 Dual-Tone filter. Both of these points (no, or minimal, AGC and moderate IF BW) are not intuitive, especially for an experienced CW operator. [Elecraft] K3S Band data 1 connection to the Yaesu VL1000
Hi Tom, Your initial thought is correct: "the K3VL1K1 is not wired correctly and will not key the amp". I had the exact same issue and spoke to the fellow who made the cable for Array Solutions, and he said he purposely didn't wire the cable to key the amp. He gave me a reason why but it made no sense to me. Fact is, I purchased the same type of K3S to Quadra cable for another fellow and it does key the Quadra as needed. I think we should ask Array Solutions to change the cable construction so it keys the Quadra. 73, Dick- K9OM Date: Wed, 30 Nov 2016 17:48:38 -0500 From: Thomas Donohue To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3S Band data 1 connection to the Yaesu VL1000 query Message-ID: <8447a436-470c-4662-93ec-960838347...@gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 Hi to all: This subject has been posted before and I found the answer on the Elecraft historical threads web page. In any event I tried the recommended solution but have not been able to get the K3S to key the VL1000. Specifically, I?m using a Band data one cable put together by Array Solutions (designator K3VL1K1) to connect the ACC output on the K3S to the Band data 1 input on the VL1000. With the VL1000 turned off and the power supply turned on, I can use the K3S on all bands FB; When I turn the VL1000 on and select input 1, I can use the K3S on all bands, with auto band switching by the VL1000. However, when I press the operate button on the VL1000, the unit will not key on any band, but the auto band switching function on the VL1000 continues to work. My initial thought is that the K3VL1K1 is not wired correctly and will not key the amp. But, when I checked the wiring it appeared to be wired correctly. So my query is (1)Is the K3VL1K1 the correct cable for what I?m trying to do (i.e. auto band switch and key the amplifier?, and if it is the correct cable is there a config menu setting that needs to be implemented (i?ve checked and haven?t found any)?, or is there something I?m missing or not doing. Any thoughts or advice will be appreciated. [Elecraft] K3S USB driver problem
My K3S with Elecraft USB cable going the radio to computer worked great on my old Windows 7 64-bit computer. Now I'm trying to use the same radio and same USB cable with another Windows 7 64-bit computer and cannot get it to work as I'm having problems getting the driver installed. Some related thoughts: 1) This Windows 7 64-bit computer cannot auotmatically find a Driver for the USB cable. I'm, quite sure my old W.7 computer installed the driver automatically without me downloading it manually. 2) Since the new computer cannot find the driver automatically, from the Elecraft website, I downloaded the Driver file: "CDM v2.12.24 WHQL Certified" and then unzipped it to the Documents folder. (there are 8 files within that folder) Using Device Manager, I try to install the new Driver, but regardless where I place the zipped or unzipped "CDM v2.12.24 WHQL Certified" driver file, Device Manager reports that it "cannot find the driver". Please advise what I'm doing wrong? Such as, it there on particular file I need to select manually? Or perhaps this CDM v2.12.24 driver file needs to be placed in a particular folder? [Elecraft] KPA-1500 needed
I agree full heartedly with Greg. Please put me on the list for a KPA1500 too! 73, Dick- K9OM In a message dated 7/31/2016 7:15:50 P.M. Central Daylight Time, elecraft-requ...@mailman.qth.net writes: It's amazing how many people offer an opinion on what the market would be for an Elecraft 1500 watt amplifier. People just know it wouldn't be successful without a clue who might or might not really be interested. They're right...the QRP'ers would not be interested, for one, would be very interested. People who have amplifiers sitting on shelves collecting dust would not be interested. So who would be interested -- contesters and DX'ers. I own a KPA500 and it is very nice; the integration with the K3 makes it a pleasure to use...but I want the capability to run full legal limit. I own several full legal limit amps but would gladly get rid of one or more for an Elecraft amp. At my age and being retired, I care more about value, engineering design, and service than I do about price. There are lots of people who spend $6 - $14K on a radio...why not an amplifier? The majority of serious contesters and DX'ers own a K3. If a KPA1500 had the same features as the KPA500 then it would be compatible with the K3, remember the drive required on each band, put the K3 back at 100 watts when in standby, be upgradeable through Elecraft's utilities, have Elecraft's service commitment, would match the K-line, would be fully self-protected, and it would be made and serviced in the USA. Elecraft has already dealt with the requirements for an amp to be compatible with other rigs than the K3 so that would not be an issue with the 1500. Contesters especially would appreciate convenience with the instant band switching with no need to touch drive controls or worry about antenna selection. I'll offer my opinion that a lot of people who already own a 1500 watt amplifier would go ahead and purchase an Elecraft amplifier for all the reasons mentioned. Alphas used to be the cat's meow but the products and service they have now don't measure up to what Dick Ehrhorn used to offer. I wouldn't discourage Eric/Wayne from considering a KPA1500. I hope they do it. [Elecraft] KRC2 For Sale
I have a KRC2 band decoder and control kit for sale; asking $80 plus shipping (USA). Am selling the KRC2 because I have 12 mono band antennas (6M - 160M plus 75M NVIS) and the KRC2 will only control 10 (10M - 160M). Doing a bit of research (actually blind luck when perusing the Array Solutions web site) I found their Bandmaster III will control 12 antennas, and I picked one up at the Array Solutions booth in Dayton last week. Though the KRC2 will work with several other manufacture's radios, I have only used it with a K3 (and now a K3S). I have never had any problems or issues with it; I am the original owner, and it has always been in a smoke free environment. For the K3/K3S (and I think all the Elecraft radios), control is best asserted by using the AuxBus; this requires one wire from the KRC2 connected to pin 2 on the AuxIO connector on the K3/K3S. If interested, please fire off an email to me at either richarddw1...@yahoo.com or k8...@yahoo.com; or feel free to call me on the land line (am an ARRL DXCC card checker, and my phone number can be found on the ARRL webpage). Re: [Elecraft] Rerouting the KRX3 AUX Input from the Rear BNC to the KAT3
Don, I have my sub receiver connected to the AUX input, and it still works just fine with diversity receive. The way you do is connect your receive only antenna to the RX in BNC on the back of the K3, then run a short piece of coax with male BNC connectors on each in between the RX OUT and the AUX input. Not sure why this method has not been mentioned in the manual. I have being doing this since I purchased my original K3. [Elecraft] K3: roofing filter configuration settings
A question regarding roofing filter "configuration bandwidth" settings on the K3: The factory default roofing filter "configuration bandwidth" setting is to set the 250hz filter at a setting of "250". Therefore, the 250hz roofing filter will engage at the same time as the 250hz DSP filter. However, since the 250hz roofing filter has an actual BW6 of 370hz, aren't there times when it would be more beneficial to have the "configuration bandwidth" of the 250hz roofing filter set to 350 or 400? I'm thinking this may be especially true when operating RTTY since the average RTTY bandwidth is aprx. 370hz. Perhaps there are times when this would be beneficial when operating other modes as well? Likewise, the 400hz roofer has a BW6 of 450hz, so perhaps for certain modes a "configuration bandwidth" setting of 450 rather than 400 could be beneficial as well? If anyone is wondering where I'm getting the term "configuration bandwidth" from, it's a configuration heading on the K3 Utility programs filter configuration page. [Elecraft] K3: best roofing filter on RTTY
Hi Guys, I'd appreciate your thoughts on the best roofing filter: 250hz vs. 400hz, for RTTY contest conditions. While I really like the K3 on RTTY, I believe improvement can be made to my K3 RTTY reception. Some contesters have told me that they use the 250hz roofing filter exclusively when operating RTTY contests. Since the actual bandwidth of the 250hz roffer filter is close to 370hz, and RTTY signals are typically about 370hz wide, then the 250hz roofer along with a 400 or 500hz DSP setting should be close to ideal when maximum selectivity is needed. However, on both of my K3's, when I switch from the 400hz roofer to the 250hz roofer, the RTTY signal is decoded a lot less often, about 25% less often. It doesn't seem like the 400hz roofer should decode 25% more often than the 250hz roofer. (but perhaps that's normal?) Perhaps there is a receiver setting change I can make to the K3 that will improve RTTY decoding when using the 250hz roofer? I've tried various shift settings when the 250hz roofer is engaged and sometimes it improves RTTY reception, but not consistantly. Perhaps there's a setting change I can make to MMTTY? By the way, I'm using both MMTTY and 2Tone software's for decoding RTTY, with basically the same results when the 250hz roofer is engaged. Thanks in advance for your thoughts. 73, Dick- K9OM __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
