[Elecraft] KPA1500

2020-02-19 Thread Ed gilliland

Hello Everyone,

I'm getting the following error codes on 80 meters, 160 and 40 are working.

I suspected the 80m antenna so I tried using a dummy load and I get the
same error codes. Reducing the input power does not help.

I've reloaded firmware 2.38.

Anyone run into this problem?

Ed W5TM

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 LOW GAIN FAULT

2019-04-30 Thread Ed gilliland

Hi Vic, thanks.

That's the first thing I tried, should have included my checks in the
first message.  Here is what I've done so far.

Put a dummy load on the antenna 1 port

Confirmed that the amp was on antenna port one

Checked the SWR between the K3 and the amp 1.1 without the K3 tuner

Re-seated all the cables on the KPA1500 rear panel

Tried the amp again and it works.  I have no idea what cable fixed the
problem.  I am using a back to back cable between the K3 and the KPA1500
AUX ports but it's been installed for months and I've experienced no
problems.  We'll find out in tomorrow's CWT.  I think I'll run the amp
at 900 watts until I gain confidence.

WOW! WHAT A RELIEF!

Ed

The first thing to do with any amplifier failure is to try it with a dummy
load. If the problem still occurs, you can rule out SWR or RF feedback
problems. It doesn’t seem like any of the above if it occurs on all bands, but
it’s easy and a good start to a systematic diagnosis.

[Elecraft] Elecraft P3 - Fixed Tune Mode

2019-04-15 Thread Ed gilliland
I am unable to put the P3 in "Fixed Tune Mode", the display remains
constant and the VFO A cursor moves across the display.

I'm sure that I have something configured incorrectly but haven't been
able to discover the error.  I have a RS232 cable from the P3 PC port
and a RS232 port on the PC and a cable from the P3 XCVR port to the RJ45
connector on the K3s.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ed,

Are there magenta and green arrows toward the bottom of the spectrum display?

yes

These indicate where the cursors are relative to your current center frequency.

Understood

If you are in fixed tune mode, you can easily re-center your VFO A cursor by
two consecutive long presses of the SPAN/CENTER button.

In Fixed Tune Mode, two consecutive long presses of the SPAN/CENTER button
didn't help. Green and Magenta arrows are still at the bottom left of the
display

If all else fails, a memory reset can be performed by holding down the MENU
button while powering up the P3. Note that this will erase an function key
settings.

I did a memory reset. The green and magenta arrows are still at the bottom
left of the display.
I reloaded all firmware with the latest versions. The Green and Magenta arrows
are still at the bottom left of the display.

The P3 seems to be working with the exception of the U and BAR cursors.

Maybe Elecraft would fix the link to the KAT500 utility. This link -

Is there any provision for extending the standard Elecraft cable that is only

6 or 7 ft. would be ideal in my situation.

Thanks Bob,

I looked at the USB-B connector again, unplugged from the WinKeyer and
plugged into the KPA1500, no virtual port was created.

Elecraft agrees with you about the USB chip being bad.  They've sent me
an RSA so the amp will go back for service.  I asked if we could do a
board swap but they have other mods to make to the RF deck and that they
will give the amp top priority repair status.

I used USBDeview, no PROLIFIC drivers and the three COM ports listed are
all using FTDI drivers.  Nice utility, thanks.

Ed,

Did you ever install any Prolific USB devices in your system?
Prolific Device Drivers are buggy and can often interfere with the
FTDI drivers.  Prolific Device Drivers can be uninstalled.

You can use the free USBDeview facility to look for this:

https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html
<https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html>

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click to download the
64-bit version, (direct link
https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview-x64.zip
<https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usbdeview-x64.zip>). Unzip to empty
directory, then run usbdeview.exe. Scroll way over to the right
and click on the column header "Device Mfg" to sort by that
column.  Look for "Prolific" in the list.  Right click and
uninstall. Then reboot and reconnect the USB cable to the KPA1500.

If it's still not recognized, you may have a bad USB port on your amp.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for the reply.

I'm using Windows 10 Pro, Windows Defender.

I thought that you had nailed it.  I checked the Allowed Apps in Windows
Defender and the KPA-1500 Utility wasn't listed.  I added it and
restarted the computer, no help.  Shouldn't I hear a notification sound
when I plug/unplug the KPA-1500 USB cable.  I do when I unplug/plug the
keyboard.

Thanks again, Ed

I replaced the USB cable with a known good cable, no help.

I am using the K3s.  I neglected to order the AUX cable when I ordered
the amp but since have placed one on order and should be here tomorrow
but I don't think it will help in this case.

Maybe Elecraft Support will have an answer.  I REALLY don't want to send

I'm almost positive that the USB port is used during manufacturing testing for
the burn-in process that exercises all amps before they leave Watsonville, so
at some point it was working, at least with their cables, their computers and
their device drivers.

Are you using a K3S? Can it be reached with the same USB cable?

Sorry!

Hi Barry,

Yes it's on receive. It's more than leakage, more like both antennas are
connected during receive.

Perhaps Ed will clarify, but my take is that Ed's post is a different
issue.

I believe he is saying that while he's in RECEIVE mode with the RX ANT
selected, there's leakage of the receive signal on the transmit antenna
feedline into his receiver - poor isolation in the receive antenna
selection.

Personally, I haven't seen this but I haven't listened specifically for it
either.
