[Elecraft] K3 Filter Settings Main and Sub Receiver Track For Data Mode Only
Using the latest K3 firmware MCU 5.35 for my K3 (not K3S). In the Data mode only, setting the bandwidth of the main receiver also causes the subreceiver bandwidth to track and be identical. The BSET control XFIL for Data has no effect. In CW and SSB modes the main receiver XFIL can be adjusted and the subreceiver XFIL changed independently using BSET. This was definitely not the case for previous firmware versions. This operation is not band dependent. I have checked all of the firmware notes and the latest K3S manual and can’t find anything to explain this operation. Am I missing something? Is this a new and unwanted improvement? Re: [Elecraft] Configuring a K3 for the PR6-10
I would suggest that you get the appropriate male-female gender changer cable, remove pin 11 from that part and install it in series with the KPA500 cable. Keeps the original cable intact. 73 Elliott WA6TLA On Jun 15, 2014, at 11:44 AM, Mike K2MK k...@comcast.net wrote: Hi Ted, If you are using a KPA500 and a PR6 you will have to remove pin 11 from the cable that goes to the KPA500. It has popped up on this reflector once or twice but it is not mentioned in either the PR6 or the KPA500 instructions. If you wonder if this will work just pull the 15 pin cable off of the KPA500 and you'll see that the PR6 works as you would expect it to work. 73, Mike K2MK Dauer, Edward wrote I need to ask for help configuring a PR6-10 on the K3. Installed OK, removed the internal jumper per instructions and am using the control line on a Y splitter to allow the KPA and KAT to connect to the K3 as well. Physically, all seems fine, and the K3, P3, KPA and KAT work just as they always did. Then to operate the pre-amp I configured digout1 to ³on² for 28 Mhz on the K3, per instructions. OK so far. The PR6-10 manual says ³Tap RX ANT to enable preamplifier.² When I do so the noise level goes way down and the signals disappear, as if there were no antenna connected to the receiver. Removing the power plug from the preamp made no difference in either mode RX ANT on or off. I recall when building the K3 that there were elections to be made about antenna configurations when installing the sub receiver and/or the KXV3. I also remember that there are a myriad of ways the antennas can be routed via the configuration menus. I have a feeling that the elections and internal configurations I originally made in the K3 are not compatible with getting the PR6-10 to work simply by pressing RX ANT, but I can¹t reason my way through it all. Re: [Elecraft] PR6 6 meter antenna connections
Or it you have a dedicated 6M antenna and the ATUconnect it to Ant-2 and make sure that ant position is selected for 6M! 73 Elliott WA6TLA - Original Message - From: Lew Phelps K6LMP k6...@me.com To: Elecraft elecraft@mailman.qth.net Cc: Gil WA5YKK wa5...@centurytel.net Sent: Thursday, April 29, 2010 12:32 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] PR6 6 meter antenna connections Don't feel alone, Gil. I went through the same head-scratching several months ago, when I bought my PR6. connection is actually quite simple. Your 6 m antenna connects to the HF antenna jack on the back of the rig ( ANT-1.) Connect the 6 m preamp to the receive only bnc jacks on the transverter interface. connect 12 V power to the preamp using the supplied RCA plug that goes into the auxiliary 12 RCA-style 12 V jack on the back of the rig, enter connects to the preamp with the small 3-pin connector attached with red and black wires to the RCA plug. Make sure it is oriented properly; the red wire goes toward the rig and the white wire away from it. The plug is not polarized, so it is possible to put it in backwards. No harm if you do, but the preamp won't work. You have one additional setup question to deal with. Do you want to preamp to be powered whenever the rig is on, or only when the rig is tuned to the 6 m band? If always on is your preference, your setup is done. If you want the preamp to be powered only when the rig is tuned to 6 m, then you need to remove the jumper from J2 (see instruction manual), and connect the supplied db-15 connector with one white wire coming out of it to the AUX DB-15 jack on the back of the rig. Go into the config menu and set DIGOUT1 to on with the rig tuned to 6 m, and to make sure that DIGOUT1 is set to off for all other bands. That configuration will power up the preamp when you switch the rig to 6 m. To engage the preamp, simply tune your rig to the 6 m band and press the RX ANT button on the front of the rig, (near the power button). When you do that, the K3 will automatically route the receive signal to the RX ANT module, through the 6 m preamp, and back to the front to end of the K3 receiver. When you transmit, the rig will automatically bypasses the receive antenna circuitry, and sends the transmit signal directly out through the ANT-1 connector. For normal use on 6 m, you don't connect anything to the outboard pair of bnc jacks on the preamp. those basically exist to provide the receive only antenna functionality for every band other than 6 m, since the preamp is bypassed when the preamp is powered off. in this mode, a receive only signal goes directly from the outboard pair of BNC jacks to the inboard pair that are connected to the rig itself. When you first hook this thing up, it's natural to assume that the 6 m antenna ought to connect to the 6 m preamp, but it doesn't. The 6 m received signal simply takes a little detour from the main antenna input jack through the preamp, and then back into the receiver. It's like stopping at Starbucks for an espresso to give yourself a boost before you go on a long trip (through the receiver). Hope this helps. Lew k6lmp For the six meter PR6 owners and users; I've followed the factory guides on the PR6, no problems with installing it, but I'm totally befuddled about where the 6 meter antenna itself is connected! All the text does is refer to different K3 connections, in terms that are fuzzy to me at best, bearing in mind that my brain is still fuzzed over from a case of the flu, and a lot of items aren't making sense right now anyhow. Would the experts in the group kindly give me an explanation of what cable goes where, to make this system work? The Elecraft tech support goes into a vernacular which makes little to no sense to a late '50s era beginner, before logic gates and bypass modes. Sorry for sounding like a babe in the woods, but I have almost no time for thinking things through, too many work items to accomplish with a spine that's telling me I'm nearly headed for a wheelchair! __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I just found that I can tune the receiver using the RIT knob without the RIT button engaged and the RIT icon not shown on the display. This seems strange to me as I did not notice this before. I'm using firmware 3.30. Have I accidently engaged something when I pushed and held the PF1 button?? [Elecraft] K3 6M Question
I will be using my K3 driving an Alpha 87A. The amp operates up to 10M. I am using a Steppir so the same antenna will be used for 6M. The question is does anyone have any experience using the K3 barefoot through the 87A when it is off or in standby? If it can't be used that way, I will need to come up with a switching scheme to bypass the amp. I have a question in to Alpha but don't expect a reply until after the holiday weekend. 73 Elliott WA6TLA __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] New K3 Menu Setting
My new K3 is complete except for installing the some remaining filters and the KRX3. I am in the process of understanding the functionality of all of the menu items and finding the various buttons!! I will be using the K3 with the Steppir controller to automatically change bands as the radio is retuned. I see that the AUTOINF entry needs to be changed to AUTO 1 to provide band data information on the RS232 port. My question: When using the RS232 port with the K3 Utility, does this menu item need to be returned to NOR for proper interface compatibility? For anyone using the K3 with the Alpha 87A. Is any setting for the TX DLY other than NOR 008 more optimum for proper QSK operation? The mike jack connections as shown on page 13 are pin 1 audio, pin 7 and 8 ground. I assume that either or both ground pins can be used and their is no need to use one versus the other. My experience with other radios using multiple ground pins is that one had be associated with the audio input and other for control purposes. The isolation was necessary to prevent noise on the audio input. I have a KDSP2 that was built and installed in January 2007. I have played with it and find that it works fine. However, being an old CW op I prefer to use the anatomical filter between my ears!! If you have a KAF2 and want to try the KDSP2 it will go directly in place of the analog filter. If you haven't installed any filter you will need to modify the control board and order a 3 pin and 5 pin female header from Elecraft to be installed. In either case, you will also need to obtain a Gray Foam retention piece for the K2/100 and the Black Foam retention piece for the basic K2. These items shouldn't total more than 2 or 3 dollars. I just finished the build of the various KX1 items that I purchased at the Viasalia DX Convention. All went well at each stage of the build from basic KX1+KXAT1+KXB30+KXPD1. I am checking out the total configuration and I notice something now that I don't recall see earlier. After I finish transmitting and the display has shown the 5/6 tick marks their is approximately a 2-3 second delay of blank screen before the frequency is shown again! Is this normal? [Elecraft] Yaesu FT-2000 v K-3?
I am owner of a K2 with all of the accessories etc. Very nice radio and I enjoyed the build and operation of the radio. I use an FT1000D as my main station radio. I enjoy the 200w capability and 99% of the time I don't need my Alpha 87A. In fact, a lot of the time after turning on the amp I work the station with the exciter before the 3 minute warmup period is over! I am considering an FT2000D as a possible replacement for the 14 year old FT1000D but I intend to wait a long time for Yaesu to get the bugs out of the software and hardware design. I don't like being the test guinea pig for new equipment! I had an opportunity to play with the K3 at the Visalia DX Convention. The features are very impressive and the front panel is very user friendly. I like the modular concept and would go the build it myself route when and if I decide to buy. I can't enough good things about the Elecraft design philosophy and customer service. One thing that would help would be an additional option for a 200w capable radio the K3D!!! Re: [Elecraft] Rework Eliminators: when to use them, and why
The pin jumpers are available from places like All Electronics for 50 cents for a 40 pin header. Cut the header into appropriate lengths and solder jumper wires and caps/resistors across the correct pins. Put the jumpers for the each mod in a small envelope appropriately marked and ready for use if necessary. I can't see spending big bucks when $2 will do for something you will rarely use!! It really is that easy. 73 Elliott WA6TLA - Original Message - From: wayne burdick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft Reflector elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, November 30, 2006 9:28 AM Subject: [Elecraft] Rework Eliminators: when to use them, and why Gary and company have done a very professional job on the Eliminators. Some builders will find them useful. On the other hand, Elecraft's documentation and staging of construction is consistent and carefully planned, so they are not a necessity. It's clear that builders can successfully complete the K2 using either method. Here's my recommendation: - If the notion of plug-in substitutes for future options strongly appeals to you, and you don't mind *carefully* following the additional set of instructions that comes with them, then by all means consider this method. - If you'd prefer to minimize the amount of documentation you have to deal with in building a kit, then stick with the Elecraft manuals. If you're capable of building a K2, then you certainly won't have any trouble adding options our way. Disclaimer: I'm the principle designer of the K2 and wrote most of the manuals, so I could be biased. [Elecraft] KPA100/KAT100
I have just completed successfully installing the amplifier and tuner in an EC2 and interfacing it with the K2 and KIO2 data interface. No difficulties were encountered and the alignment went exactly as described in the assembly manuals and the information from KK7P. The one question I had regarding an interface voltage check turned out to be normal because the interface between the KAT100 and KIO2 has a 1/2 voltage divider created by the series resistor in the KIO2 and the base-emitter resistor in the KAT100. I completed all of the alignment steps for the KPA100 with the K2 and then installed it in the EC2. Great project, getting excellent keying reports and now I'm putting in the hours of operation needed to do the recommended retightening of the power transistor mounting hardware! 73 Elliott WA6TLA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I have completed the initial construction of the KPA100 and performed the initial tests using the ribbon cable interface. All of the resistance checks are within tolerance. All of the voltage measurements are within spec except for U1 pin 27 at 3.92 instead of 5.8. The value of RP1 is 3.9k so it appears that the 8R line is 3.92v. I finally finished my K2 and installed the various accessory pieces. I had two problems both solved with the reapplication of a soldering iron!!! It's a great little radio and I enjoy breaking DX pile ups and rag chewing at the 5 watt level. I have a question regarding the power control. I can adjust the power in 0.1 w increments per the manual. However for example, if I set the level at 5.0w the resultant output is usually higher. Sometimes by almost a watt. Other times it will be a little lower. I am using the ATU that is calibrated properly. From band to band the same power isn't always the same with no adjustmnet to control.
