[Elecraft] K3 Filter Settings Main and Sub Receiver Track For Data Mode Only

2015-10-23 Thread Elliott Lawrence
Using the latest K3 firmware MCU 5.35 for my K3 (not K3S). In the Data mode
only, setting the bandwidth of the main receiver also causes the subreceiver
bandwidth to track and be identical. The BSET control XFIL for Data has no
effect. In CW and SSB modes the main receiver XFIL can be adjusted and the
subreceiver XFIL changed independently using BSET. This was definitely not the
case for previous firmware versions. This operation is not band dependent.

I have checked all of the firmware notes and the latest K3S manual and can’t
find anything to explain this operation. Am I missing something? Is this a
new and unwanted improvement?

Thanks for your comments.

Re: [Elecraft] Configuring a K3 for the PR6-10

2014-06-15 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I would suggest that you get the appropriate male-female gender changer cable,
remove pin 11 from that part and install it in series with the KPA500 cable.
Keeps the original cable intact.

If you are using a KPA500 and a PR6 you will have to remove pin 11 from the
cable that goes to the KPA500. It has popped up on this reflector once or
twice but it is not mentioned in either the PR6 or the KPA500 instructions.
If you wonder if this will work just pull the 15 pin cable off of the KPA500
and you'll see that the PR6 works as you would expect it to work.

I need to ask for help configuring a PR6-10 on the K3. Installed OK,
removed the internal jumper per instructions and am using the control line
on a Y splitter to allow the KPA and KAT to connect to the K3 as well.
Physically, all seems fine, and the K3, P3, KPA and KAT work just as they
 always did.

Then to operate the pre-amp I configured digout1 to ³on² for 28 Mhz on the
K3, per instructions. OK so far.

The PR6-10 manual says ³Tap RX ANT to enable preamplifier.² When I do so
the noise level goes way down and the signals disappear, as if there were
no antenna connected to the receiver. Removing the power plug from the
preamp made no difference in either mode RX ANT on or off.

I recall when building the K3 that there were elections to be made about
antenna configurations when installing the sub receiver and/or
the KXV3. I also remember that there are a myriad of ways the antennas
can be routed via the configuration menus. I have a feeling that the
elections and internal configurations I originally made in the K3 are not
compatible with getting the PR6-10 to work simply by pressing RX ANT, but
I can¹t reason my way through it all.

Hi Ron,

correct, you'll loose the voice memories then. But you know there's
PF1/PF2 for macros available on the front panel, too, right? Might save
you from needing to assign to M1-M4 if 2 are enough. ;-)

It seems to me that having the macro available on the front panel is more
convenient than downloading it from the K3 Utility.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Chassis Issues

2012-02-12 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I just completed assembly of my KPA500 shipped last week. To everyone
discussing problems with the fit of the top cover and distortion of the
chassis.none found here. Top cover is perfectly flat WRT the front
panel. Everything as usual for Elecraft products. I followed the
instructions to the letter. Power turned on and all appears normal. To late
in the day to finalize station connections but will make some RF tomorrow.

I can attest that obtaining UL, CSA and foreign

and costly process. I went through the process a few
years ago with a medical product, and I can understand
why Elecraft might want to avoid marketing AC PSU's.

[Elecraft] KPA500 to K3 ACC Connector

2011-04-03 Thread Elliott Lawrence
Can any of the field testers using the ACC Connector interface verify if the
K3 end of the cable has a through mounted female connector (back to back
male/female conncectors) that the mating connector for the PR-6 pre-amp can
use for access to pin 11 without having to make any wiring changes? This
would also enable access to the other K3 functions and the KPA500
simultaneously. If not, sounds like a good option to me!!

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] PR6 6 meter antenna connections

 Don't feel alone, Gil.

I went through the same head-scratching several months ago, when I bought
 my PR6.

 connection is actually quite simple.

Your 6 m antenna connects to the HF antenna jack on the back of the rig
 ( ANT-1.)

Connect the 6 m preamp to the receive only bnc jacks on the transverter
interface. connect 12 V power to the preamp using the supplied RCA plug
that goes into the auxiliary 12 RCA-style 12 V jack on the back of the
rig, enter connects to the preamp with the small 3-pin connector attached
with red and black wires to the RCA plug. Make sure it is oriented
properly; the red wire goes toward the rig and the white wire away from
it. The plug is not polarized, so it is possible to put it in backwards.
No harm if you do, but the preamp won't work.

You have one additional setup question to deal with. Do you want to preamp
to be powered whenever the rig is on, or only when the rig is tuned to the
6 m band? If always on is your preference, your setup is done. If you
want the preamp to be powered only when the rig is tuned to 6 m, then you
need to remove the jumper from J2 (see instruction manual), and connect
the supplied db-15 connector with one white wire coming out of it to the
 AUX
DB-15 jack on the back of the rig. Go into the config menu and set
DIGOUT1 to on with the rig tuned to 6 m, and to make sure that DIGOUT1
is set to off for all other bands. That configuration will power up the
preamp when you switch the rig to 6 m.

To engage the preamp, simply tune your rig to the 6 m band and press the
RX ANT button on the front of the rig, (near the power button). When you
do that, the K3 will automatically route the receive signal to the RX ANT
module, through the 6 m preamp, and back to the front to end of the K3
receiver. When you transmit, the rig will automatically bypasses the
receive antenna circuitry, and sends the transmit signal directly out
 through the ANT-1 connector.

For normal use on 6 m, you don't connect anything to the outboard pair
of bnc jacks on the preamp. those basically exist to provide the receive
only antenna functionality for every band other than 6 m, since the
preamp is bypassed when the preamp is powered off. in this mode, a
receive only signal goes directly from the outboard pair of BNC jacks to
the inboard pair that are connected to the rig itself.

When you first hook this thing up, it's natural to assume that the 6 m
antenna ought to connect to the 6 m preamp, but it doesn't. The 6 m
received signal simply takes a little detour from the main antenna input
jack through the preamp, and then back into the receiver. It's like
stopping at Starbucks for an espresso to give yourself a boost before you
go on a long trip (through the receiver).

 Hope this helps.

 Lew k6lmp

 For the six meter PR6 owners and users;

I've followed the factory guides on the PR6, no problems with
installing it, but I'm totally befuddled about where the 6 meter antenna
itself is connected! All the text does is refer to different K3
connections, in terms that are fuzzy to me at best, bearing in mind that
my brain is still fuzzed over from a case of the flu, and a lot of
items aren't making sense right now anyhow.
Would the experts in the group kindly give me an explanation of what
cable goes where, to make this system work? The Elecraft tech support
goes into a vernacular which makes little to no sense to a late '50s era
beginner, before logic gates and bypass modes.
Sorry for sounding like a babe in the woods, but I have almost no
time for thinking things through, too many work items to accomplish with
a spine that's telling me I'm nearly headed for a wheelchair!

2010-03-20 Thread Elliott Lawrence
The firmware is NOT show as a 3r79.zip file and a brower refresh doesn't
change the situation. This is different from all of the previous releases.
If you want to download and save version 3.79 you need to create a new
folder and transfer all of the required files into that folder. This will
create an archive for previous versions. Going directly to the Elecraft
website via the K3 Utility does not create an archive folder.

 Steve,

If you tried looking on the Elecraft website and did not see it, you may
have to refresh your browser. Click the Firmware and SW link on the
left, then select the K3 Firmware page - Release 3.79 should be at the
top of the box on that page.
If you have K3Utility pointed to detect new firmware on the Elecraft FTP
site, it should detect that version and download it if you elect to do
that. See the K3Utility Help page if you have trouble setting it up to
automatically notify you of new firmware available.

Yesterday I noticed the same issue on the RF power output using Data A. I

takes about 10-15 seconds it remains the same for future transmissions.

[Elecraft] Firmware Request

2009-11-21 Thread Elliott Lawrence
Boy the firmware changes keep coming and coming even before I can load the
previous beta a new one arrives.

I would like to make a firmware change request. Several times while in the
Data A mode I have accidently hit the M1 button where I have a voice message
of my call stored. Of course before I can stop it my call is sent on the
RTTY frequency out of band!!! Not a good thing.

Please consider updating the software to inhibit the voice message or only
use a CW message previously stored when in the Data Mode. Actually having
the CW message played in Data Mode would be good in a pile up as you could
send your call without using the paddle and actually complete the QSO with
only using the M buttons!!

Well, the CQ WW is over, I'm rested and I finally got to play with 3.47.

From all the emails, there's not much left for me to test!!
I did a few and it was a smooth, slick operation.

I like the idea of an Aux bank of Programable switch that fits under the
 K3.

 Question:
Is there going to be any switches available on the P3 to control the K3??
 Speakng of P3, any news?

Wayne, thanks for letting my test 3.47.
And thanks for including the users in on all your development, planning
 and
 options.
 What a concept!!

F4 settings. I do not notice any audio blanking in the F5 through F8

[Elecraft] K3 Firmware 3.44

2009-10-18 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I installed the latest 3.44 firmware and the associated DSP firmware
yesterday. The install went without a problem although I am always a bit
anxious at the completion bars slowly march across the screen!

I've noticed with the NR engaged and the BW control being adjusted that the
audio blanks as each step occurs (a popping sound). I don't remember that
being there with my previous version 3.3. The blanking does not occur with
the NR off. It just smoothly changes the bandwidth.

Does anyone else notice this condition? Is it a function of the changes
made to eliminate the audio screech? So far everything else seems to be
functioning OK.

Elliot,I installed my FW 3.44 yesterday and now that you mentioned I gave it
a try and your are right, with the NR engaged, in my case best result at
F4-1, every time I move the WIDTH step by step,I hear a pop sound at the
speaker and the audio blanks out for a fraction of a second,no big deal for
me but the WIDTH tunning is not smooth as it was before, all the other
functions works ok,maybe Elecraft team will fix this with the next
upgrade, that's why they want us the beta testers do all the test and let
them know what is wrong,73

[Elecraft] K3 possible subject for firmware update.

2009-09-28 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I use a Steppir antenna here. No problem tracking the frequency as shown on
VFO A. When I go split and therefore transmit on VFO B the antenna
frequency is not updated for operation in a different band segment. It
still tracks VFO A. On my previous radio, FT1000D, the freqency information
followed the VFO selected for transmission. Not a big deal since the
antenna is reasonly flat even when not optimized for a different part of the
band.

I just found that I can tune the receiver using the RIT knob without the RIT
button engaged and the RIT icon not shown on the display. This seems strange to

[Elecraft] K3 6M Question

2009-09-05 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I will be using my K3 driving an Alpha 87A. The amp operates up to 10M. I
am using a Steppir so the same antenna will be used for 6M. The question is
does anyone have any experience using the K3 barefoot through the 87A when
it is off or in standby? If it can't be used that way, I will need to come
up with a switching scheme to bypass the amp. I have a question in to Alpha
but don't expect a reply until after the holiday weekend.

[Elecraft] New K3 Menu Setting

2009-09-03 Thread Elliott Lawrence
My new K3 is complete except for installing the some remaining filters and
the KRX3. I am in the process of understanding the functionality of all of
the menu items and finding the various buttons!!

I will be using the K3 with the Steppir controller to automatically change
bands as the radio is retuned. I see that the AUTOINF entry needs to be
changed to AUTO 1 to provide band data information on the RS232 port. My
question: When using the RS232 port with the K3 Utility, does this menu
item need to be returned to NOR for proper interface compatibility?

For anyone using the K3 with the Alpha 87A. Is any setting for the TX DLY
other than NOR 008 more optimum for proper QSK operation?

Thanks and 73

[Elecraft] K3 Mike connections

2009-08-25 Thread Elliott Lawrence
The mike jack connections as shown on page 13 are pin 1 audio, pin 7 and 8
ground. I assume that either or both ground pins can be used and their is
no need to use one versus the other. My experience with other radios using
multiple ground pins is that one had be associated with the audio input and
other for control purposes. The isolation was necessary to prevent noise on
the audio input.

Thanks,

[Elecraft] FOR SALE: KDSP2

2007-05-28 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I have a KDSP2 that was built and installed in January 2007. I have played
with it and find that it works fine. However, being an old CW op I prefer to
use the anatomical filter between my ears!!

If you have a KAF2 and want to try the KDSP2 it will go directly in place of
the analog filter. If you haven't installed any filter you will need to modify
the control board and order a 3 pin and 5 pin female header from Elecraft to be
installed. In either case, you will also need to obtain a Gray Foam retention
piece for the K2/100 and the Black Foam retention piece for the basic K2. These
items shouldn't total more than 2 or 3 dollars.

The KDSP2 is perfectly assembled and tested. I am a retired electronics
engineer and 53+ year ham. I am asking $220 shipped Priority Mail.

Please contact me directly.

I just finished the build of the various KX1 items that I purchased at the

something now that I don't recall see earlier. After I finish transmitting and
the display has shown the 5/6 tick marks their is approximately a 2-3 second
delay of blank screen before the frequency is shown again! Is this normal?

Nice little radio but using my TH7 antenna for approximately 10db of gain to
check it out. Able to work guys even with the poor conditions we are

[Elecraft] Yaesu FT-2000 v K-3?

2007-05-10 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I am owner of a K2 with all of the accessories etc. Very nice radio and I
enjoyed the build and operation of the radio. I use an FT1000D as my main
station radio. I enjoy the 200w capability and 99% of the time I don't need
my Alpha 87A. In fact, a lot of the time after turning on the amp I work
the station with the exciter before the 3 minute warmup period is over!

I am considering an FT2000D as a possible replacement for the 14 year old
FT1000D but I intend to wait a long time for Yaesu to get the bugs out of
the software and hardware design. I don't like being the test guinea pig
for new equipment! I had an opportunity to play with the K3 at the Visalia
DX Convention. The features are very impressive and the front panel is very
user friendly. I like the modular concept and would go the build it
myself route when and if I decide to buy. I can't enough good things
about the Elecraft design philosophy and customer service.

One thing that would help would be an additional option for a 200w capable
radio the K3D!!! I wonder if that is a future possiblity??!!

I can't see spending big bucks when $2 will do for something you will rarely
use!! It really is that easy.

Subject: [Elecraft] Rework Eliminators: when to use them, and why

Gary and company have done a very professional job on the Eliminators.
Some builders will find them useful. On the other hand, Elecraft's
documentation and staging of construction is consistent and carefully
planned, so they are not a necessity.

It's clear that builders can successfully complete the K2 using either
method.

Here's my recommendation:

- If the notion of plug-in substitutes for future options strongly
appeals to you, and you don't mind *carefully* following the additional
set of instructions that comes with them, then by all means consider this
method.

- If you'd prefer to minimize the amount of documentation you have to
deal with in building a kit, then stick with the Elecraft manuals. If
you're capable of building a K2, then you certainly won't have any trouble
adding options our way.

Disclaimer: I'm the principle designer of the K2 and wrote most of the
manuals, so I could be biased. You decide :)

[Elecraft] KPA100 Upgrade

What are the specific incremental upgrade changes to go from C to D? My amp is
revision C so if I wanted to make only those changes, what needs to change to
make it a D? The amp runs just fine as built

[Elecraft] KDSP2 Performance

2006-08-04 Thread Elliott Lawrence

I am thinking of adding the KDSP2 to my trusty K2. I have listened to the .wav
files on the Elecraft site and the reduction in ambient noise is impressive. I
know that the DSP is designed to handle random/thermal noise but can anyone
comment on its actual ability to handle pulse/burst noise such as that
generated by power lines etc.

Re: [QRP-L] Re: [Elecraft] K2 Frequency Display Problem

2006-06-11 Thread Elliott Lawrence
Just change bands before turning off K2. The information is immediately
stored in the EEPROM without waiting for the 30 second timer.

time I turn the radio on, I see 14063 on 20M no matter what frequency I
was on when I turned it off. Same problem on every other band, no
matter what frequency I was on when I turned off the radio, it turns
onto a particular frequency when I turn it back on, for example,
18143.90 on 17, 7241.09 on 40. Any ideas on how to fix this?

 The K2 manual says:

 Backup Timer

While you're moving the VFO, a 30-second data backup timer is
being continuously re-started. Once you have completely stopped
tuning the VFO for at least 30 seconds, the K2 will then save your
current operating frequency in EEPROM. As long as you stay on a
particular frequency, no further updates will be done.

... so the simple answer is wait 30 seconds without tuning, you
 impatient so-and-so :-)

[Elecraft] KPA100/KAT100

2006-06-06 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I have just completed successfully installing the amplifier and tuner in an EC2
and interfacing it with the K2 and KIO2 data interface. No difficulties were
encountered and the alignment went exactly as described in the assembly manuals
and the information from KK7P. The one question I had regarding an interface
voltage check turned out to be normal because the interface between the KAT100
and KIO2 has a 1/2 voltage divider created by the series resistor in the KIO2
and the base-emitter resistor in the KAT100. I completed all of the alignment
steps for the KPA100 with the K2 and then installed it in the EC2.

Great project, getting excellent keying reports and now I'm putting in the
hours of operation needed to do the recommended retightening of the power
transistor mounting hardware!

[Elecraft] KPA100 with KAT100 in EC enclosure

2006-05-29 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I have completed the initial construction of the KPA100 and performed the
initial tests using the ribbon cable interface. All of the resistance checks
are within tolerance. All of the voltage measurements are within spec except
for U1 pin 27 at 3.92 instead of 5.8. The value of RP1 is 3.9k so it appears
that the 8R line is 3.92v. It isn't obvious that anything is dragging the line
down. All of the interface checks with the K2 are correct.

Any thoughts on a possible problem or is this within acceptable limits?

[Elecraft] K2 Power Control

2004-12-30 Thread Elliott Lawrence
I finally finished my K2 and installed the various accessory pieces. I had two
problems both solved with the reapplication of a soldering iron!!! It's a
great little radio and I enjoy breaking DX pile ups and rag chewing at the 5
watt level.

I have a question regarding the power control. I can adjust the power in 0.1 w
increments per the manual. However for example, if I set the level at 5.0w the
resultant output is usually higher. Sometimes by almost a watt. Other times it
will be a little lower. I am using the ATU that is calibrated properly. From
band to band the same power isn't always the same with no adjustmnet to
control. Wonder if RF is getting in the ATU control circuitry or the feedback
path from the RF board?

Otherwise the radio is a joy to operate.

Happy New Year to all,

[Elecraft] K2 #4424 Complete

2004-11-25 Thread Elliott Lawrence
My K2 #4424 completed today after several months of off and on building. A few
part issues speedily resolved by superb Elecraft service and several cockpit
errors fixed along the way. Unit met every tuneup without a hitch the first
time. Only slight issue is approximately 8.5 watts output on 12/10 meters. T1
thru T4 wound and placed exactly as instructions require. All other bands in
spec. Will try a beefer power supply to see if that might be limiting the
power out.

Now on to the accessories.
