Re: [Elecraft] Possible AC Line noise
Mark, I had a noise problem too. I just new it was the next door neighbor's solar panel! With the P3 set to visualize the noise, I went around the house unplugging stuff. As it turned out, the noise was being generated by a cheap replacement laptop power supply! It's the old story of out of sight, out of mind. Gary at Elecraft ALSO suggested using a portable AM/FN radio set to maximum of the interference and doing a walkthrough. Keep the antenna horizontal and rotate the direction to find hot spots. Re: [Elecraft] Orion I for K3
Caveat Emptor .FWIW: I had an Orion, years back. It was a very good rig. But it was announced that the manufacturer of its signal processor was changing dies which could affect availability and future maintainability of the Orion I. I made a decision then to upgrade to the OMNI VII, because of the OMNI lineage. Boy was I disappointed with the pseudo roofing filter when that rig was employed in the CQP (as compared to the Orion I.) So, in less than a year I turned to the K3. The K3 was a massive improvement for detecting weak signals and separating strong signals. Another consideration is the upgrade path for Orion I vs. the K3. The P3 is a game changer. I don't know how I lived without it. OTOH the spectrum display on the Orion I was useless to me. Then there is the KPA500 which, like the P3, integrates all its functions seamlessly with the K3. As a Ten Tec owner I tried the Ten Tec blog for a limited time. I quit because of the elitist flaming. I'll stick with Elecraft, thank you. 73, Fred __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] OT Hypothetical KAT500 antenna connection question
I have a question about connecting the KAT500 (outside version) to an 80 thru 10 meters wire antenna. As an example, I have a Mystery antenna which, like the G5RV uses a tuned length of twin-lead as part of the antenna design. Therefore I will have two possible places to couple the KAT500 to the old antenna: a. At the present input end of the twin-lead. b. At the antenna center point (do away with the twin-lead.) Another alternative would be to replace the old antenna with a new wire. I believe this alternative would require selecting a longest length of wire which avoids a quarter-wave length multiple on any band. Any ideas on what length that would be? Since getting the KPA500, I have added tuned antennas on 10, 15 and 40. On those three bands, I can use the amp w/o a tuner. I'm leaning toward a new wire to replace the Mystery antenna for 80 and 20 meters. Last week at 0500Z, I worked Cape Town, South Africa on 20 meters with 200 watts (KPA500 sometimes blinking red.) So, now is the time to prepare. I welcome your thoughts and I assure you that I have great respect for your input. 73, Fred, AE6IC, K-Line __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 General Questions
Joe es all, I have three wire antennas in my back yard mounted below the roofline; so they can't be seen from the front yard. I use tuned 15 meter and 40 meter antennas that are center fed from a common balun but spread apart by about 90 degrees. The KPA500 is in the green with this combination at 500 watts all across both bands! My other wire is a Mystery antenna, similar to a G5RV. The typical SWR on 20 and 80 meters is 2.7+ (not good.) This weekend, I was able to use the KPA500 in the Texas QSO party at 200 watts (low power) on 80M CW, 20M CW SSB. It's not the best situation but the KPA500 took it in stride. I have never heard the fan except when turning the amp off! I still have to use the K3/KPA100 barefoot on 10 Meters, but the KAT500 will solve that real soon I hope. 73, Fred, AE6IC, K-Line __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] P3 report card
Way to go Alan. This weekend I used the new P3 FW for the 1st time. The redesigned curser with the heavy line on one side made a big difference in the heat of the Salmon Run. I was using SP and the curser made CW and SSB signal alignment easy plus helped focus on the sideband in use. The P3 waterfall made it easy to distinguish between atmospherics, spy radar, CW, SSB, AM, TTY and digital signals without having to tune each one individually. You see where each one is instantly. The waterfall also makes it easy to spot running stations by their periodic signal bursts. The result: when changing bands, I was able to spot and tune potential contacts immediately. I look forward to running in the California QSO party on 1-2 October. [Elecraft] Need help to determine most effective K3 vs KPA500 output
I have a K3-100 with KAT3 and a KPA500 w/o a tuner. I use an all-band Mystery (similar to a G5RV?) wire antenna. Because of the KAT3, the K3 sees a 1:1 antenna match which is good. However, I would like to operate up to 200 watts out (low power) for the California QSO party. The KPA500 tolerates a 3:1 SWR at 200 watts across the 20 meter band and in the CW portion of the 80 meter band on the mystery antenna. My question is which option is the most effective, 100 watts with 1:1 or 200 watts with 3:1? Keep in mind that both options use the identical antenna and feedline. Thanks in advance. 73, Fred, AE6IC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Need help to determine most effective K3 vs KPA500 output
Thanks Don. No, it's not a trick question, just tricky for me! And yes, the feedline is ladderline. So the bottom line is that the 200 watts w/o a tuner is slightly better than 100 watts w/tuner using the same feedline and antenna. Every little bit helps. I live in an area where CCR antenna limitations force the use of a stealth wire. snipNow if you were tuning that antenna at its feedpoint rather than at the transmitter, it would make the difference between a matched feedline and one with SWR - that is the advantage of a remote tuner. endsnip I can't wait to see the Elecraft KAT500, especially the remote tuner. That will be a whole new ballgame for me. By not having to use a tuned antenna design, I can then string a longer random wire to increase the RX capture area. [Elecraft] OT: California QSO Party, 1 2 October
Hams have a lot to celebrate here in California, USA. Of course, everyone knows its home to Elecraft. However, this year there is a special reason for the Hams of Oceanside, CA to celebrate: We fought the city to stop an ordinance that would limit ham antennas to 36 feet plus impose a number of onerous conditions. Part of our presentation to the city included the 2009 CQP spreadsheet (look under resources at www.cqp.org http://www.cqp.org/ ) showing how HF operation requires different bands at different times. This data plus a simple discussion on ground effects and its relation to antenna height won the day. Thanks NCCC. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Bose Headsets
Juan, I have used the Bose QuietComfort (headset only) and they work FB. However, the noise-canceling feature is not very useful in my ham shack. It does little to reduce random noise like people talking, dog barking, kitchen clanging, etc. It's really more suited for cutting out the drone of airplane engines and other constant or reoccurring noises. If you want a good headset with boom-mike you might consider the Yamaha CM500. They work great with the K3. Unlike the Bose which requires a AAA battery, the CM500 can be powered directly by the K3 by selecting the mic power using the menu. With all the chatter (which is good) about K4s, color displays, DC to daylight coverage and you name it; I hope that Elecraft keeps its focus on completing the K line with the KAT-500. Re: [Elecraft] KPA500 and KAT500 Ports
To all: I'm enjoying this thread because it directly addresses my two greatest concerns. First of course is human error. The second concern is connector problems. Elecraft has addressed the first by using kit options on the K3/P3/KPA500 so that I'm more aware of the result of my actions, and also by the outstanding communications interface between the K3/P3/KPA500 units. Then there is the second concern of connector failure. Elecraft has maximized the digital capabilities within the K3, thereby limiting that cabling concerns. They have also created a fool proof RF path for TX/RX (I.e. the KISS KPA500.) Now, the Elecraft team has asked what features we would like on the upcoming KAT500. Here are mine: 1/ Maintain the integration that exists between K3, P3 and KPA500. The threat here is that if they try to placate those with max power amplifiers, Elecraft would open Pandora's Box for problems not of their making. What's going to stop the human error of slamming max power across an 8:1 SWR and causing a KAT500 crispy-critter? This would drain company resources. 2/ Keep the KISS principle in the TX/RX path. I live in a restricted deed area. About 80 percent of all new housing has restrictive CCRs. This limits me to two stealthy wire antennas. Two RF outputs are fine with me. Why not make a BASIC tuner with the OPTION of adding an expanded switching matrix? That way I'm not paying for something I don't need. Elecraft has created the awesome K line. It is based on a long line of frugal, super effective capabilities. I hope that Elecraft will continue to focus on THAT K line. Their forte is one baby step at a time . options, options, options, . 73, Fred, K3#2241, P3#100, KPA500 #115 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] KAT500 Suggestions
Eric and Wayne, To optimize desktop space I suggest the upcoming KAT500 be designed so that its tilt stand arm can be installed in either the front (normal) or back of the unit. That way if I set it atop a front tilted KPA500 I could raise the back of the tuner to offset the tilt, which would a nice. And, it would be great if I could switch between the two coax feedlines that I have set up. Sure, this would require software differentiating the antenna switching by the K3 and antenna switching by the tuner. However, it would simplify operation and greatly reduce the possibility of me using the wrong antenna. BTW, the KPA500 kit is working FB. Congratulations to all. Then my son, KJ6JUS, researched the problem and came across the link below. Wow, enlightenment. [Elecraft] K3 and WriteLog
If you are a WriteLog user you may want to check out their new webpage look. WriteLog has had some succession problems in coming up with the right people to take over from the old guard. Hopefully they have succeeded and will once again be able to grow the product. I proposed the upgrade below to WriteLog and Steve responded. Hi Fred, I'll forward your request on to Wayne. You're the 2nd person to request this recently. :-) Steve N9OH Wayne, Nice new look for the WriteLog webpage. I've used WriteLog since 2003 and feel comfortable with it. My problem now is I need a way to introduce Elecraft K3 Commands from WriteLog. Is there any chance that you could add a menu option to choose either sound card for voice output as it is now OR instead use the function keys to send a text string to the rig to initiate the K3DVR? This would be a killer new capability for WriteLog and for users of the new SDR oriented rigs. 73, Fred, AE6IC, hamkt...@att.net Do or Do-not. [Elecraft] P3 Questions concerning measurement
Hi all. While waiting for the P3 I have a few questions on setup and measurement. Since I have never used LP pan or similar devices I'll need some Elmering. Specifically there are two capabilities listed in the Elecraft P3 page that I need help on: 1. Adjustable reference level and amplitude range scaling 2. User calibration of the display to show absolute signal level in dBm Number 1 suggests two parts. It has an adjustable reference level. Question: WRT what reference: 0 dBm, the bottom of the spectrum display baseline or some particular value? The other part adds amplitude range scaling. Is this a separate function or is part 2 the conclusion of the process? My second question concerns the use of the absolute signal level in dBm. If I am assisting a Ham friend in adjusting his signal, will this capability allow me to evaluate such things as his BW and compression? I know that I can do that now by ear but will the P3 give me a visual clue WRT onset of changes over-the-air? I have an HP Spectrum Analyzer that I have used to check my own K3 on- the-bench. So the phrase over-the-air is the big question. These questions do not pertain to the main reason I am looking forward to the P3 (I.e. operating) but rather to the other useful possibilities. I appreciate the group's Elmering. 73, Fred, AE6IC, K3 #2241, P3 #? __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Adding options later for the K3
Hi Mike. You might get things needed for building the K3 ahead of time, like a static pad/wrist strap, and a 50 Ohm dummy load. Get a good Phillip's Head screwdriver. I use a Husky 90044 #1. It has an 8 shank which helps reach areas where my fat fist won't fit. You'll need a signal source for calibration. If you're looking for an inexpensive signal source I suggest the Elecraft 2T-gen kit. This is an easy kit to build and it is perfect for use with the automated gain setup in the K3 Utility program. I use the Heil footswitch and HM-10 mike so your Goldline should work just fine. Just set the Menu: Mic Sel to fPH (front panel, high) if you use the mike jack on the front of the K3 or rPH if you use the rear PTT and MIC jacks. The K3 kit itself does not require any soldering and the options are a snap. Doug Turnbull wrote: * No matter what some say there are a number of us waiting for the P3!!! * I agree Doug. Many of us have good reason to prefer the P3 over an amplifier. CCR's limit us to stealth antennas and low power. My previous three rigs: Jupiter, Orion 1 and OMNI VII had limited spectral displays that IMHO were useless. OTOH the waterfall added a new dimension to the Navy's SONAR capability and will do the same for contesting and DXing. Although there are other ways to achieve the P3 capability, they also add clutter. The P3 will prevent clutter and thus allow me to focus on finding that extra point or that elusive contact. [Elecraft] K3 Blank spots in RF gain contol
I just had an enlightening experience with the K3 RF gain control that may help other K3 owners. As the RF gain control was rotated clockwise, a significant drop in output occurred over a segment of 3 to 4 degrees at about the 1 o'clock point. It seemed to me that the pot had a worn spot in it (I'm an old analog type.) However, when I contacted Elecraft Support, Gary recommended that I reload FW and do an RF gain calibration. His suggestion worked! The RF gain now works smoothly. I hope this info is helpful. BTW, the Elecraft XG2 signal generator sure made calibration easy. Re: [Elecraft] Reflector Traffic
Hi Gary, I suspect David is correct. Elecraft is concentrating on getting the K144XV out the door. Being a very small company, they must focus their resources. Everybody is getting antsy about the P3 (its' my 2009 Christmas present!) I can't imagine waiting for the Dayton Hamfest to introduce it. Re: [Elecraft] P3 question
As I recall some of the discussions at the Santa Barbara Hamfest, a mouse interface would greatly complicate the design of the P3. The standard computer-to-mouse interface requires a software driver which is not trivial to design and maintain (drivers are written in machine code for a specific processor architecture.) IMO though, It should be possible to design a mouse-like remote to the P3 that emulates the knob and buttons. 73, Fred, AE6IC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Newbie Questions for K3
Phil, you pose some great questions. Here goes: 1. The one option I would not get is the high accuracy oscillator.but that's just me. 2. As far as esoteric parts are concerned, Maybe Eric or Wayne should answer that one. I had an Orion 1 a couple of years back. But it did not have an internal tuner. At that time There was no upgrade path, so I looked into the Orion 2. (Too expensive) but then learned That the manufacturer of the signal processor in the Orion 1 had discontinued their part! I don't know what became of that issue but I didn't want to become a victim of passed repair. I tried an OMNI VII for a few months but its receiver didn't measure up to the Orion's. That's when I decided to try the K3 kit and I have been totally happy with it and support. 3. Assembly is a piece of cake, even for a 73 year old like me. There is one caveat. Protect your investment by using electrostatic pad and wrist strap. Hope this helps. 73, Fred AE6IC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 MDS calculations using the Elecraft XG2
I set up the K3 Rx sensitivity test (using 1 microvolt signal) according to XG2 manual. It seems to work in general except that the resulting MDS calculations seem too low: 123 dBm on 80 meters, 132 dBm on 40 meters, and 130 dBm on 20 meters. I am using the front headphone jack on the K3, with the CONFIG:SPKR = 1. AGC is off. Preamp is own, RF AF gains are at maximum, and the CW passband is set to 500 Hz. The AC measurements were made using a Craftsman autoranging multimeter. Example: on 40 meters the reading was 0.310 V with XG2 on and 0.018 V with XG2 off. (0.310/0.018) = 17.2. Log 17.2 x 20 = -24.7 dBm. MDS = -107 dBm -24.7 dBm = 131.7 dBm. I was expecting a better value (maybe -137 dBm?) Could it be a problem with the DMM? If so, is there a recommended DMM? [Elecraft] The real P3 Objectives
There have been many very good suggestions for P3 options. For me it boils down to simple use during normal operations. Normal operations may be meeting friends, DXing, or contesting. If you are meeting up with friends, someone may ask you to look at their signal. You have lots of time to fiddle with buttons. But if you are DXing or contesting, you must focus on the moment. The last thing you want to do is tweak buttons. Therefore you want a limited setup of preferred options that minimize the need for your attention during the event. I've never used a panadaptor so I have concerns about what features are best suited for the event and how to apply them. A. Contesting has made Ham radio a new hobby for me. I could use the P3 to check if a band is open. For CQing, I would like to know where the least amount of QRM QRN is located. For SP I need to know when the strong new signals present themselves. I also would like to know if a nearby signal might be wiping me out. B. I'm not a DXer but I can imagine that a very narrow BW would be handy to see if the DX station was favoring a particular response frequency or to visualize the clearest point in response time. I'm sure you all have many great P3 operating ideas and I sincerely hope you will post them for all Elecraft users to share. Have fun. 73, Fred AE6IC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] P3 review et al
I've just about recovered from the trip from Oceanside, CA to SBARC and back so now can post the results. 1st: Kudos to Alan, Eric, and Wayne for successfully demonstrating a P3 prototype and Kudos also to SBARC for picking up the pieces of the SW ARRL convention (that was going to be held at Riverside, CA.) To be sure, Elecraft stole the show (99%.) What I saw was: a) bright, well defined, color display of both spectrum and waterfall. They were selectable singly or split-screen with waterfall on top. b) Tracking that changes the K3's frequency based on the red vertical marker on the P3. There was a yellow vertical marker (not yet programmed) for the sub receiver . c) Plug and play with the K3. NOTE: either a KXV3 or KXV3A is required. d) Minimal wiring required: Power (12VDC), Signal, and RS-232, all of which are at the back of the P3. e) FW which will be fully upgradable via the K3 utility. The P3 FW designer, Alan N1AL, had been up till 2:30AM tweaking things! Poor guy will probably crash when he gets home. In spite of being tired, he was like a proud papa answering questions about the P3. Not all of the buttons were implemented yet but those that were: spectrum, waterfall and K3 tracking, seemed very stable. The system uses a PIC-type chip which has a built-in signal processing capability (what will they think up next)? One nice design feature is the ease of inserting the P3 into my present setup (K3 to WriteLog via microHAM Interface ll). All I have to do is move the RS-232 plug from the K3 to the P3's RS-232 jack! That's it. Everything is linked between the two. What could go wrong? Well, they seemed to be concerned about its light weight (If you were blind-folded and picked up the P3 you might think it was an empty box.) The upshot: a means of interlocking it with the K3 will be required, otherwise, every time you push a button on the front panel, the P3 will move. That's an issue that will have to be addressed. I'd buy it now if they'd let me. No one would address price yet. When will we see it advertised for sale? Hope was expressed for the end of this year. No promises were made, just stay tuned. Merry Christmas, I hope. Another word for Finished is Dead. 73, Fred, AE6IC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Two questions
Wayne, I have two questions concerning the upcoming panadaptor: 1. Will I need a KXV3, IF Out/Interface? If so, I'll take care of it now to save time later. 2. Is the panadaptor likely to be available in time for the California QSO contest (1st weekend of October)? I'd be happy (along with a thousand other K3 owners) to assist in wringing out the bugs. Thanks to all you folks at Elecraft for breathing new life into ham radio. Happy 4th. 73, Fred, AE6IC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Stealth antenna insulators
Greetings from the CCR capital of the world: California, where stealth antennas are a way of life. The current discussion about how certain display colors are more discernable than others begs a point: what if you don't what to see it? Since 2003, I've used one inch electrical PVC pipe to make stealthy antenna end insulators. Its bluish grey color has less contrast than the glossy white or black of store bought insulators. About a quarter inch ring cut from the PC is sufficiently strong to support 12 gauge wires. 73, Fred, AE6IC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] CQ Contest
Richard, your comment about Golden years was right on. Amen. At 73 rotations, I'm a little slower, my right hand has a bit of the palsy, and I need a nap after lunch. But, I still love Ham radio. Fortunately, the great people at Elecraft came along. The K3 is, hands down, the best rig I've ever owned. During a contest, if other Hams can copy me, I can copy them (key clicks splatter not withstanding.) 73, Fred, AE6IC. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Transister Theory flaw
Ah yes, specialization: where you learn more more about less less till you know everything about nothing. 73, Fred __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
