[Elecraft] Weird KIO3UPKT problem

2018-03-31 Thread Fred Bennett

Howdy folks...

I've been chasing this problem for a while thinking it was in my audio
system.but NO!! I use a laptop computer with an external HIFI audio
board. The HIFI audio board drives a very nice amplified JBL speaker
system with a subwoofer. The external audio board occupies one USB port
on my laptopwhen I plug the KIO3UPKT cord into any of the other 3
USB ports on my laptop I get what sounds like 60 cycle hum out of my
HIFI audio system. It doesn't matter which port I plug the HIFI audio
interface intoas soon as the KIO3UPKT is plugged in I get the hum.
The KIO3UPKT seems to function just fine in all other ways except for
inducing this noise. Any ideas???

[Elecraft] For those at Dayton (KAT500)

2012-05-18 Thread Fred Bennett N9TA
The price as I was just informed when I ordered via phone was $699
assembledI don't remember the un-assembled price but I think it was in
the low $600s. A bit steep for a tuner...but I'm betting it'll be worth it!!

[Elecraft] K2 Carrying Handle/Strap???

2009-03-17 Thread Fred Bennett N9TA
   Hi Gang

I completed the build of #6705 last night with the installation of the
SSB option.
I built this K2 (my third) with the thought of portable operations. The
options I
included are K160RX, KSB2, KAT2, KBT2, and KIO2.

It's been years since my last K2 but I remember discussions on this
email reflector
about a carrying strap. With the inclusion of the KBT2 (battery) option
the K2 is
a heavy little buggerand I can see how a carrying strap would be
nice to insure
that no drops happen while moving the rig about. Has anyone here
installed a carrying
strap and is there anything to be concerned about?? I'm sure I can find
a carrying
strap to affix to the side of the K2the question being...is there a
structural strength
issue to be concerned about since the side panel is attached to the PC

This email group is primarily concerned with solving problems in the use

 Hi,

When I use Logic 8 there is a nice feature where there is a DX Spot
log. This reflects on the air spots and evaluates my database to let
me know what is posted that I need on which band for which award.

When I click on a call, the K3 automatically goes to what band and
mode was posted and even moves the transmit/SPLIT to the DX's
 listening freq if posted.

Almost perfect except for some reason, when engaging this, the
command also moves the K3 to listen in the reverse position.

I've learned to click on the spot in logic and then press the ALT on
the K3 to put the signal to normal but I'd like to be able to have
the ability in the config menu to tell the K3 to ignore the REV
comand unless physically selected by the ALT button or just to ignore
it totally unless I intentionally enable it again.

 Possibilities?

 Thanks,

[Elecraft] What is wrong with my K2 #6705 ??

2009-03-10 Thread Fred Bennett N9TA
   Hi Folks

I stayed home from work today to do a little work with #6705.
At first I had NO output on 12 metersFIXED...just WAY out
of adjustment on C44 C46 (Very touchy until in the ballpark on
C44).

Here's the remaining problemlow output across the bands:
All readings taken with digital wattmeter into 50 ohm dummy.
80 5.37
40 7.61
30 7.09
20 7.38
17 7.72
15 7.67
12 4.27
10 3.48

CAL/CUR has been set to 3.5 amps (Should be WAY high enough)

Here's the interesting partduring these TX tests the BUILT IN power
reading shows in excess of 10 watts (meter pegged) while the outboard
meter shows MUCH less. I've double checked the component placement,
soldering, and Taken out and measured the values of R67, R68, D9, R66,
R69and confirmed that C77 is a .001 cap. Everything looks ok in the
RF Output Detector section. I've noticed however, that when I first
go into TX mode the output spikes and cuts back very rapidlyit seems
that #6705 thinks it's putting out WAY more power than it really is.
The question why???

Any help would be much appreciated!! 73..de..Fred N9TA

On a whim, I measured the DC resistance of my dummy load (old oil filled
MFJ paint can). It reads 63.7 ohm.could this small a mismatch give me a
false power reading??

Re: [Elecraft] What is wrong with my K2 #6705 ??

2009-03-10 Thread Fred Bennett N9TA
   Don

We're thinking alike I think. I've started with the assembly of the KAT2
option.
I've still got the KAT2, Batt, SSB, KIO2, and 160M options to build. I'm
hoping the installation of the KAT2 will fix my problem.

Fred

Don Wilhelm wrote:
 Fred,

That dummy load is way off at DC, so who knows what the actual value
is at RF. It could be the only source of your problem.

Specifically, *any* deviation from 50 ohms pure resistive will cause
the basic K2 to indicate (and control) power incorrectly.
That dependency is removed when the KAT2 or KPA100 or KAT100 are added
because those options contain true wattmeters.

I don't have any assistance to offer other than to say find a known
good dummy load. Ridge Equipment has a 50 ohm dummy load flat to 1.5
GHz for $11.99, but you will likely need an adapter for the input -
they sell those for $5. See
 https://www.ridgeequipment.com/store/dummyloads.html

The base K2 has only a diode detector to measure the RF output, so it
can only measure the voltage. Using the 10 watt level as an example,
with a 50 ohm load, the K2 measures 22.3 volts of RF and declares that
the power is 10 watts (and it actually is). If the load is instead 63
ohms, and you request 10 watts, the K2 will control the power until
the RF voltage reaches 22.3 volts, but the actual power being
 developed is only 7.9 watts.

Your dummy load likely has some reactance as well as resistance, so
who knows what the actual impedance is at the various frequencies.

[Elecraft] K2 #6705 is alive...sort of

  Hi Gang

My basic K2 (no options installed yet) is alivealthough sputtering a
bit.
I've no time to troubleshoot the thing tonightbut here's what's
going on:
Low power out 80M thru 10M (6-7 watts), except on 12 meters where there
is NO output!! I've probably missed a solder joint in the 30M section or
somethingbut what would be the things to look at for the low power
output
on ALL the other bands?? I'm using a power supply at 'round 14 Vdc...I'd
tweaked it up a bit to use with a previous battery option K2. Also I did
raise
the current cutback on Cal/Cur to 3.5 from 2.5 to make sure it wasn't
current limited.

 Fred,

It is all relative. If the 8 volt regulator output is on the lower
side of its spec (it is a 10% tolerance part), then everything will
work out just fine, set it to the maximum.
Reason - the IF amplifier is the stage controlled by the AGC, *and* it
is powered by the 8 volt regulator. When the IF Amp supply voltage is
reduced, the ACG action begins at a lower voltage point than at higher
 voltages.

Bottom line - if you are able to set the S-meter parameters with the
lower AGC Threshold voltage, then all is well. If you cannnot adjust
 the S-meter, then a 10k to 15k resistor soldered across pins 3 and 4
of Control Board RP6 will allow you to adjust the threshold upward.

Yes, a manual errata sheet should be published IMHO. The 3.8 volts is
not graven in stone. There is an implication in the K2 manual that
the AGC threshold can be optimized later on, but there are no details
of how to do that - in fact, that optimization is simply reducing the
AGC Threshold voltage so that receiver noise does not activate the AGC.

[Elecraft] K2 #6705 question...missing part.

2009-03-07 Thread Fred Bennett N9TA
Hi Gang

The trials and tribulations with #6705 keep comingHI HI
I have looked high and lowover and overand I can find
no RFC15. This is a subminiature 100uH choke that is tacked
onto the bottom of the RF board. I have the Qty 4 of the regular
100uH chokes that I'm supposed to havebut no additional
miniature 100uH.

Now here's the question: I've looked at the schematic, and RFC15
feeds power to the Synthesizer (U4). Without power to that chip I
am through with the assembly of #6705 til Elecraft can get me a
RFC15 shipped out. So I used one of the regular 100uH chokes...
keeping the lead lengths as short as humanly possible...and it actually
fit rather well. Is this likely to have any ugly consequences? I will
contact Elecraft about the shortageand I'm sure they'll handle it with
the efficiency we've come to love and respectbut I don't want to
lose this weekends effort! ActuallyIF the installation of the larger
choke gives me no instability issues, is there a reason to bust up a
sexy solder job on the larger one I cabbaged in??

Re: [Elecraft] K2 #6705 question...missing part.

2009-03-07 Thread Fred Bennett N9TA
Hi Don

Actually, I thought I HAD added the errata. I put a note that the COLOR
of the choke might not be as listedbut if it mentioned the SIZE as
changed I missed that!! In any case, the parts list a QTY of 4 large
100uH chokes...which I have. And then it lists the miniature 100uH choke
which I do NOT have. So I would have thought I'd have found 5 (FIVE)
large 100uH chokes if I'm supposed to use one of them for RFC15

 Fred,

Check the last part of item 15 in the Errata sheet - that explains
that the choke for RFC15 may be the same as the other 100 uH chokes.
You *did* transfer all the information in the errata sheet into the
manual before you started did you not? If not, that is standard
 operating practice and very important.

I cannot emphasize the importance of the errata sheets enough - they
contain the latest information and using that information can avoid
many errors. In this case, it has only caused a bit of confusion.

interesting to see what serial number they are up to now!! I keep them
for a couple of years and then trade them for something else.one of
my many faults is always looking for something better...HI HI. I really
struggled this time thoughK3 or K2 was the question. In the end I
chose lower power consumption for working off battery power. Besides,
after watching numerous K2 and K3 videos on YoutubeK2 just seemed

RE: [Elecraft] Sidetone volume

2006-12-27 Thread Fred Bennett N9TA

Tnx Don

I think you may have hit the nail on the head. I DO have to reduce the
volume greatly when using the headphones. From my perusal of the schematic
for the K2, it looks like if I changed R36 it would change the AF level on
both the speaker AND the phones...NOT what I *think* I want. It looks like
R35 (a 82 ohm resister) is in line with the AF feed for the phones. Does
this look right??
On Phones I use a sidetone level of 25...on speaker I use a sidetone level
of 140is it possible to deduce from this what a good value of resister
would be for R35??

TNX for the help!! 73...de...Fred N9TA
___
Fred,

Since you are reducing the setting of the AF gain control when changing from
headphones to the speaker? If so, that is the reason in a 'nutshell' - the
level of the sidetone is not controlled by the AF gain.

So, if you set the sidetone level to be correct for your speaker volume,
then it will be too loud when you reduce the AF Gain for use with the
headphones.

I would suggest that you try increasing the value of R35 and R36 on the K2
RF Board so you do not have to reduce the AF Gain as much when using the
headphones - or switch to a less sensitive set of headphones.

You can also just change the sidetone level in the menu (assigned by default
to the PF1 button) when switching from speaker to headphones.

It imulates a standard serial port so you should be good to go.

[Elecraft] K@ DSP Audio Filter Product Suggestion

2005-03-26 Thread Fred Bennett
Hi Gang

Having played with my new DSP gizmo I have come upon the
Man, I wish I could idea that would seem easy to
carry out. When setting up the audio filters, I would
like to be able to select GAIN settings for each filter
bandwidth. Right now, there are a possibility of 4 different
filter bandwidthsBUT they all share the same Gain setting.
If I could have different Gain settings for each filter
bandwidth, then I could set up a variable CW PEAKING filter
that could have progressively higher Gain for progressively
lower bandwidth. This would allow me to take a small slice
of the band and amplify the signal for reallyreally weak
signals!!!

   Any possibility??? 73deFred N9TA

RE: [Elecraft] K@ DSP Audio Filter Product Suggestion

2005-03-26 Thread Fred Bennett
Exactly the idea! Surf the band in a higher bandwidth/
lower gain setting, and if you come across a weak signal
you want to pop out you go to a progressively lower
bandwidth/higher gain Afil. However, if you have to leave
the gain at a high setting and you surf thru a load signal,
then unpleasant noises may result. :-)

-Original Message-

This is an interesting idea.

A potential problem is that the KDSP2 is not really intended to provide
gain in the normal sense of amplification. The gain adjustments are
intended solely to to provide equalization, so the apparent insertion
loss of the KDSP2 should be about 0 dB.

Here's why.

The input analog-to-digital converter has a certain maximum voltage that
it can accept from the product detector in the K2. The output
digital-to-analog converter has the same voltage limit. If you apply
too much internal gain in the DSP to a weak signal, and a strong signal
comes in, you may overdrive the digital-to-analog converter, resulting
in loud and unpleasant distortion.

The K2 AGC normally mitigates this by limiting the input signal to the
analog-to-digital converter, but some operators turn the AGC off. With
the AGC off, the risk of unpleasant acoustic consequences increases!

Thus, I recommended setting the gains solely for equalization. As you
narrow the DSP, just turn up the AF gain control on the K2 :-)

Enjoy!

This K2 was built with the KAT2, KIO2, KSB2, K160RX, and KBT2
options.

I seem to have rather low power output..at least I remember the
last K2 I built seemed to have higher output than this one.might
I have a problem somewhere??? I tried the alignment both with and
without the ATU installed.so I know the ATU is not the culprit.
These power readings were obtained into a dummy load and measured
with the same digital wattmeter I used with the last K2.

  160M.13 watts
80M.14.13 watts
40M.12.8 watts
30M.13.26 watts
20M.13.1 watts
17M.12.6 watts
15M.11.0 watts
12M.10.4 watts
10M.7.74 watts

Also, I may have wasted my money on the battery option. The
instructions for the battery option say to charge the battery from
a 14V +/- .2V...I run my K2 from a solar charged battery setup.
At night with NO sun the system runs about 12.7V. During the
day with FULL sun it'll run about 13.7V. I had hoped to be able to
grab the K2, key, and portable antenna and head off into the woods
for an afternoon of play..but it looks like I'll have to charge the
battery from some other source. I kinda hate the thought of that!!
So far in it's life, K2 #4502 has had NO commercially produced
electrons inside it..seems like blasphemy to plug it in...HI HI

 Any thoughts, ideas, comments???
