Re: [Elecraft] [K2] W3FPR Fixed audio out - installation options or ideas?

2010-11-20 Thread g3ymc

I have built Don's fixed audio out board and fitted it as suggested with no
problems whatsoever. Output is taken to a phono socket fitted in one of the
unused transverter holes in the top panel. When I fitted the 60m option
which includes the transverter interface I used the new heatsink so the
transverter sockets use the holes in there, making the ones on the top panel
redundant. It works fine.

Re: [Elecraft] [OT] Frequency Guide

2010-09-21 Thread g3ymc

A couple of points:

7040 has been used as the QRP frequency CW in the USA, but elsewhere in the
world it has always been 7030. The ARRL new plan is an attempt to bring the
USA into conformity.

40m bandplans changed last year with the increased allocation in Region 1
after the broadcasters moved away. 7000-7040 is now CW only, PSK is allowed
above 7040 and SSB (Region 1) above 7050. Unfortunately PSK and other data
operators in Europe seem to turn a blind eye to the bandplan and insist on
using 7035.

I have seen this on occasion with my K2. Occasionally I get a very long DAH

I only run 5W so I don't think it is RF, I suspect a bug in the firmware.

Re: [Elecraft] Using /QRP in CW contests

2010-05-13 Thread g3ymc

In fact in many countries of the world the suffix /QRP is not allowed or is a
grey area in their licences.

I operate QRP but will NEVER send G3YMC/QRP. If a station calls me with /QRP
I might make a note in my logbook that they are QRP but will omit the suffix
from the callsign I put in the log and not use /QRP in responding to them.
Many operators will do the same. In a contest you should certainly never use
it, it slows down the exchange and virtually none of the contest stations
you work will actually log it. It also causes big headaches for LOTW and
eQSL in that as a different callsign it won't match with what the other chap
sends so you won't get those cards.

And I always tell people that those who send /QRP in a pileup get 559
reports. I get 599 like everybody else!

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Sales service goes from bad to worse

2009-03-17 Thread g3ymc

I would agree that your criticism is somewhat inappropriate Julian, Elecraft
still do an excellent job especially since they deal with a very much
greater customer base these days.

A couple of points worth commenting on though. I recently ordered some
upgrades for my K2 (yes some of us still use those...). Confirmation of
order and dispatch was very quick. A few days later the tracking at UPS
after it had left customs also showed they attempted to deliver but clearly
had not. In fact what happens is that Parcel Force send you a postcard to
instruct you how to pay the customs fees and that time corresponded to when
they had sent that postcard, not when they delivered (the postcard, with a
different Parcel Force tracking number, arrived the next day and I paid and
arranged delivery for the following day).

There were a couple of small omissions in the parcel, so guess Elecraft do
sometimes make mistakes. An email to sales resolved these, the missing parts
were dispatched the same day and received here yesterday.

So apart from that slight hiccup I am a very satisfied customer.

Just want to be sure I'm not going to hurt something. :-)

Manuals say I can charge the internal battery from a power supply with the
 battery switch in either position.

Just curious if I need to use caution while operating.

 Thanks and 72:

This is stated in the KBT2 manual:

CAUTION: If you connect an external battery or a power supply of other than
14.0 V to the K2, you must disable the internal battery using the battery
on/off switch. Otherwise, the external battery or low-voltage supply will
charge the internal battery to an inadequate voltage, greatly reducing the
internal battery’s life.

Not sure whether the reason given is entirely correct, but in essence if
your external supply is 14V or so you can use the K2 with the rear switch in
the ON position, which is the normal charging condition. If you have a lower
voltage supply you cannot - I suspect what happens there is that the
internal battery tries to discharge through your external supply.

You need the rear battery switch in the ON position to charge the battery,
it is in series with it. The manual is referring to the front power switch -
have it on if you are using the K2, off if you are just charging.

Came across this last night. I am checking out a second hand K2 for a
friend. The K2/100 lid was fitted, the QRP lid with the battery had been
sitting idle for a while and its battery was down to 11V. Something for
those of you with both lids to keep an eye on!

certainly not say it was easy and it took quite a few mornings before I
managed it. I also made quite an effort on 80m and 30m CW though didn't
quite make it although a couple of times I got the impression the op was
hearing me but couldn't quite read my call (but that is pure speculation
from my part). The thing which has amazed us over here in the UK is the
phenomonal strength of their signals. This morning they were peaking 599 on
the meter on 80m, and my antenna is lousy to work anything on 80m never mind
a chap in the Pacific

As for working spit, that is the way, and the only way you will make a QSO.
DXPeditions simply do not work co-channel and although a 25kHz split is
rather more than the norm it worked well in this case. Obviously the KX1
falls down here though and cannot do such a wide split. As for speed,
25-35wpm is the norm for most of HF dx and contest work and that is the
speed you need to get competent at, sorry.

[Elecraft] K2 Knob tip

2008-01-24 Thread G3YMC

Like many of you I suspect I have been plagued with the black paint rubbing
off the front of my K2 knob over time. I have repeatedly tried touching it
up with black car touch-up paint but before long it looks a mess again. I
have been considering attaching a new front plastic disc on it to sort the
problem, but with my mechanical skills it would unlikely look very pretty.

Today I was eyeing a pile of electrolytic capacitors in the junk box. I
picked up a 470uF 400V cap and noticed it had a nice black plastic disc on
its top, covering up the aluminium below. Even better it was 34mm diameter,
about the same as the K2 knob. A quick cut and pare with the wire cutters
and it was removed and stuck on the front of my knob. Superb. Maybe
won't last, but I have quite a few more of those caps! And this mod doesn't
even make the caps unusable, they work just the same without their plastic
top!

 the cycle was getting tiring!

Last week's sunspot from the next cycle does indeed show the start of the
next cycle, but you won't see any real improvement until 2010 at the
earliest, maybe later. That was a single spot, later ones were still from
the last cycle. The sunspot number at the moment is zero, conditions
basically flat, yesterday's disturbance not caused by spots at all. Any
feeling that you had good conditions was just in the mind...

(by the way, you can now delete the 'Waiting for K3' from your

We are unfortunate in Europe that after MSF stopped broadcasting time
standards on HF (apart from 60kHz) in not having a reliable standard to
check against. WWV (always recommended by Elecraft) is normally inaudible
here. The only available one is RWM on 9998kHz (also on 14996) and is what I
originally used to calibrate my K2 against. But I can't even hear that at
the moment...

For a rough check, most of the broadcast stations at 7MHz are fairly
accurate and on the 5kHz intervals. I just checked and the one on 7200 is
pretty spot on as far as I am concerned.

In the ideal world yes. Unfortunately the bandplans do not reflect the
increase in interest in RTTY contests and the space they need. Hence the
spread of activity. I have always been a strong advocate of bandplans and
deplore out of bandplan operation in contests, but you have to be realistic.
As it happened there was no contest activity below 7020 this weekend and
plenty of space for QSOs down there. Don't do RTTY or other data here but am
a keen QRP operator and get great results in contests as well. Well meaning
though they are, contest gripers do little to help our hobby.

some of the Nabble ones don't...?

My spam seems to have dropped to an all time low of one or two a day, but
maybe I shouldn't say that in case the spammers hear...

I am using the Nabble interface as well (but in the UK and not getting any
bounce messages from my posts...). Maybe it is one of the quirks of Nabble,
it does not always seem to show all messages. Maybe nobody on the email
version is seeing this thread at all???

But I guess going somewhat OT.

Re: [Elecraft] No Elecraft List

2007-12-19 Thread G3YMC

I have also just emailed Andy direct and reminded him that he can also see
posts on the Nabble archive (http://www.nabble.com/Elecraft-f28632.html)
which some of us are now using to keep the traffic down. Seems to work
fairly well but I do get the impression that some posts don't make it
through to Nabble and also it often doesn't thread them correctly. But saves
me scrolling though several email digests a day

Caught sight of a few of the boards of M0XDF's K3 last night, looks
impressive!!

Re: [Elecraft] OT - 10 meter contest

A lot better than in G land. Left the receiver running on 28020 yesterday and
a couple of times signals popped out of the noise but had disappeared again
before I could copy their callsigns. Effectively zilch - and I won the QRP G
certificate last year with a massive 18 QSOs...
