Re: [Elecraft] K3/KAT500/XV integration

2020-04-16 Thread GWK

Jack;

In my setup, the XV is connected to 12V, but is not "on" until it is
selected by changing the K3 to 2 meters (which, of course, is just what
it won't do.) The KAT500 is normally left on 24/7. I do not use the
"Auto" selection on the KAT500, so it can't surprise me with an unwanted
tune.

You think a straight-through (Y) cable will work? I'll have to make one
and try, if I can find some DB15's.

Thanks for the info,

George

George;

That message occurs because something is loading the Auxbus when the K3 is
powered on. Make sure that the KAT500 and the XV144 are both powered up when
you turn on the K3. They can be powered on at the same time, but the task needs
to be done before the K3 enumerates the Auxbus, which is done in the latter
part of its power-up sequence.

There may be a further issue with this setup, however. Whenever the KAT500
decides it needs to do a tune, it will disconnect the Key line from its AUXIO
output port. This is needed to cause the KPA500 to drop out of transmit. You
don’t have a KPA500, but you do have an XV144 connected to that port, which
will also drop out of transmit at that time. While you probably won’t see this
issue, it is best to use a real AUXIO Y cable (15 pins straight through between
all three connectors) to connect both peripherals to your K3.

GM,

I am trying to get my K3 - KAT500 combination (which works well alone) to accept the addition of a
XV144 (which works well with the K3 alone). Having to plug and unplug control cables to switch
from HF to VHF is a non-starter. I had hoped to pick of the control for the XV144 from the
"AMP" socket on the KAT500, but when this is done, I get the message "turn on
KAT500" on the K3 display, and nothing works until the plug is removed from the XV144.

I have contacted Support about this, but thought I would also see if the
collective wisdom of this group can give any guidance.

Thanks for your consideration,

Thanks for the reminder about this -- I vaguely remember reading about their

than a quarter wave above ground? A few years ago, I did an NEC modeling study
of HF verticals that showed that doing that improved the vertical pattern and
seemed to suggest that it reduced ground losses. Your thoughts?

Re: [Elecraft] [KPA1500] Auto start KPA1500-Remote in host mode ?

Can you shut off the Win 10 automatic update? You could on older
Windows versions.

However, it doesn't remember it was in "Host Remote" mode and just comes
up waiting for mouse clicks that will never come -- since it's on an
unattended PC running RCForb.  I'm using it in "Ethernet" mode, though
the KPA1500's USB cable is also connected to the same PC for RCForb.

There doesn't seem to be any command line options yet, or at least
nothing is documented or listed from a /h, /help, or /? command line
parameter.

Am I missing something in the setup dialogs?

Other observations:

When the "Start Hosting Remote" command button is clicked, I get the
warning dialog: "IP Address Appears not to be a Local IP or Invalid IP..."

My IP addresses are sane as both the PC and the KPA1500  have valid
addresses in the 192.168.x.x address space.  Could this warning dialog
be getting in the way of the auto-start of Hosting Remote mode.

The process name shows up in task list as "KPA500-Remote", though I know
it's really the KPA1500 version of the app.

Constructive suggestions welcomed.

[Elecraft] Running backwards

2018-04-28 Thread GWK
Reminds me of my first chain saw - I bought a demo, already assembled,
and it didn't cut for beans! Finally noticed the chain was on backwards.

At the risk of spinning this off topic, I am reminded of the lesson I
learned years ago when I drilled a through hole through the foundation for
our low voltage walkway wiring.

I wondered at the efficacy of my brand new shiny Dewalt hammer drill
because it was taking me freaking hours to go a few inches through the
concrete. After a couple of these tortuous hours, I cursed and looked
closely at the drill - and noticed that the direction switch was on
"reverse". Attention to detail is important in any endeavor.

Ted,

The routing of the 240 volt wiring is a discussion between you and the
electrician - but there is always "a way" - even if that means drilling
through concrete (not nice, but possible).

Unless the wiring route is short, take Jim Beown's (K9YC) advice about
conductor sizes. Large conductors are not required for the current
draw, but oversize wire will help reduce the voltage drop when current
is drawn.

Putting all shack receptacles on a dedicated circuit for both 240 volts
and 120 volts AC will help a lot with received noise in your receiver,
and will isolate your shack powering from other circuits in the house.
K9YC gives good advice on this subject, even though your electrician may
consider it overkill for Jim's recommended wire size.

way out of sight. It would also then be in the kitchen on a floor above.
Not aesthetically the best that way, either.

As I described in reply to one other suggestion:

The "shack" is a spare bedroom in the lowest (of three) level of the

house, which because it is built into a hillside and therefore half of it
is below grade, has 12 inch concrete walls and a six inch (as I remember
it) concrete floor covered only with a carpet and carpet pad. The ceiling
of that room is finished as is the entire interior. The problem with
snaking a line through the walls from the distribution box which is on a
deck above ground level is that the entire space between the inside side of
the concrete and the drywall is filled with cellular foam insulation. It
was, when we had it built, the recommended way to go for the mountain
climate. I did think to have a conduit put through the wall to allow
antenna feedline coax to go through; but the electrician who was there said
there is now no way to get a 220 line through the walls without major
destruction. I might bring it overhead (between the finished ceiling of
the lower level and the floor of the next lev
el up) but then to get it down to a usable level in the "shack" would
require a conduit running down the inside wall surface. That may be what I
will have to do . . .

conductor surface, but rather the way in which the conductor material is
arranged. And I do realize that this is a very misunderstood subject. I’m not
saying that flat ribbon doesn’t have skin effect, but just where the rf flows.
Much of the outside surface in the middle of the ribbon has a high resistance
to rf. So if you are using a ribbon of wire, it would have to be much larger
than a round wire to have any advantage.
I have the Radio Engineers Handbook also and it does not have the same chapter
on skin effect.

Re: [Elecraft] Sub RX Deaf??

Chris,
When I built my K3 years ago, the Sub-Rx didn't work. I found I had
plugged the synthesizer module (KSYN3 at that time) into its socket just
one pin off - very hard to see. Corrected it and never looked back.
Fortunately, no damage to the synthesizer in doing this.

So maybe?

Keep the list as at present.  Filter on "Subject = [Elecraft] " will put

Just made a couple of 1000-watt QSOs around 50.125 (SSB and CW). Not exactly
exotic DX, but not bad for 8 watts and a dipole at 25 feet.

If you haven’t tried 6 meters before, now would be a good time :) See

Re: [Elecraft] K3 P3 and KAT500

Yes, it does - in general, 600 W into 10:1 SWR, 1000 W into 3:1 SWR
(except 500 W into 5:1 SWR from 30 to 60 MHz. This is ICAS with equal
time on and off, 5 min max at full power. See manual for details.

I am using a KAT500 routinely with the K3/100, and on occasion, the
AL-80a, which can produce 600W CW or 1000 W SSB peak. No problems so far.

And the reason you "need" the extra 1000 W is that the others in the

match.

If the new Elecraft amp is indeed 1500 watts it might be worth considering
that going from 500 to 1500 watts is only about 4.5 Db or less than 1 S-unit
in signal strength. If I owned the KPA 500 it would be a hard sell to get
