[Elecraft] Lighting

2022-08-24 Thread Gene Robinson
Working at Collins in the 60’s we had a lab with no windows but we did have 18
foot vertical antennas on the roof.
We would have NE2 neon bulbs connected to the RF coax feed lines and when
thunderstorms were within 5 miles they would start to flash.
We all then went out to the parking lot and rolled up our windows.
The rain and lightning would arrive about 10 to 15 minutes latter.
The break down and flash voltage for a NE2 is 90 volts! Keep those antennas
disconnected when not in use.

Re: [Elecraft] Alpha Antenna/KX3.

2019-06-05 Thread Gene Moore via Elecraft
I appreciate all of the feedback I have received. After some deep digging and
a fair amount of research, I have gone with the W4OP. Basically, their customer
service went above and beyond to secure my business. At this point, the amount
of information they provided me with makes me feel comfortable I made the right
choice. They reviews are pretty impressive and the workmanship seems to be high
quality.

I appreciate all of the feedback I have received!

[Elecraft] Alpha Antenna/KX3.

2019-06-04 Thread Gene Moore via Elecraft
I have just submitted my order for my KX3. As part of the next step, I am
continuing my search for an antenna. At this point, I am leaning towards an
Alpha Antenna mag loop. Like some, I have HOA restrictions in my first and
second home and this somewhat limits me as to what I can put up. I have space
on my back deck as well as a terrace in my condo.

Can anyone provide feedback regarding an Alpha Antenna or possibly have any
additional suggestions that might be helpful.

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - (K2-100)

2019-01-10 Thread Gene O
I have a RS232 cable which I made for another project. I plan to change
one of the DB9 connectors to a male version.  In essence it will end up
being the cable that is shown in Figure 41 of the K2/100 manual, page 55.

My computer has a  RS232 port and the female end of this cable will go
directly to this port.

The male end shell will have to be notched since the socket at the rear
of the K2 has a bump/tab which prevents someone from plugging in a wrong
cable.  I am almost positive this mod was designed by N0SS but I can not
seem to find where I saw it.

[Elecraft] K2 - (K2-100) aux I/O

2019-01-09 Thread Gene O
I have a K2 with the 100W, K2/100, mounted in the top.  I want to obtain
a RS232 cable with male DB9 on one end and female on the other.

In order to make the connection in the back or the K2 it seems the male
plug needs to be modified.  That is a slot cut so that it fits the
key/tab that is on the connector mounted in the back of the K2/100.

Is there any problem with this as long as the cable just has the typical
3 wires for RS232 data?

Thanks.

[Elecraft] K2 with KPA-100

2018-12-19 Thread Gene O
I should have first stated that I do not have any K2 or any amplifiers
or tuners.  Just asking questions in anticipation of getting a K2.
Reading manuals and seeing photos of k2s is not as good as seeing the
actual unit.

I am aware that the top of the KPA-100 is a black fined heat sink.  I
was not aware that the KAT2 could not fit below it.

Now I know why Elecraft came out with the K3. Confusion reigns at least
for me.  Think I will just get a KX3 which is very much like my K3 which
I have had for over 10 years.

Thanks to every one who responded.

[Elecraft] K2 with KPA-100

2018-12-19 Thread Gene O

For a portable operation:

Can anyone tell me if I have a K2 with the KPA-100 and the KAT2 low
power auto tuner installed can it be operated at say 35 watts.  I will
have a battery large enough to supply power. (Will not use this setup at
100W).  Will the tuner work OK?

I've been hunting thru the archives trying to find an answer but it has
eluded me.

Thank you.

K3 -- While in Data-A mode, I press the XMIT button and the unit does
not transmit fully. It sort of goes into oscillation is the best I can
describe it. I am transmitting into a dummy load at about 20 watts.

I first noticed this while using WJST F8. At that time I thought this
was feed back since I rearranged my shack somewhat.

Has any had this problem?

[Elecraft] Freq. offset?? -- K3

2017-07-30 Thread Gene O
I believe I solved the problem. It seems in the P3 menu I somehow set
the "Ref Cal" value to 700. Perhaps I thought it should be the same as
the pitch??? (don't know what the hec I was thinking).

In any event I changed this to zero and I am now able to tune to a
signal with the K3 and the cursor of the P3 centers at the same
frequency. Also now able to tap marker "A", move it to a signal that
came up on the P3, tap the knob and the K3 move over to the same signal.

Life is good again.

[Elecraft] Freq. offset?? -- K3

2017-07-29 Thread Gene O
Just discovered when trying to copy a strong CW signal the frequency
seems to offset. I can see the signal on my P3 at say 7024.000 but I
hear the station the strongest at 7025.000. This occurs with either my
1.0khz or 400hz filter.

Is there some frequency offset that I may set in error?

[Elecraft] K3 Speaker question

2017-07-14 Thread Gene O
Several days ago I posted a question regarding setting the time and
about speakers not turning off.

I got the time straightened out. When plugging in the headphones the
speaker that turns off is the one in the K3 _not _the external Bose
speakers I have hooked up.

Thanks to all that responded.

[Elecraft] Fwd: K3 --- Head phone/speaker question, time set

2017-07-12 Thread Gene O

Just posted this question. Did not have "K3" on the subject line.

I have been off the air for about 10 months and just now trying to set
up my K3. I have 2 Bose speakers wired to the K3, (stereo plug in the
back of the K3). When I plug headphones into the front panel shouldn't
the speakers turn off? They stay on.

In the config menu I have the SPKR+PH option set to NO. Also the SPKRS
set to 2.

What am I missing?

One other question. The time is now 02.32. The time shown on the K3 is
02.39.37. I can change the 2 by turning the main VFO dial. How do I
change the the other numbers?

I am missing something here also.

Thanks, Gene

[Elecraft] K2/100 Power on no RX or PA?

2017-03-26 Thread Gene N4FZ
This has been an intermittent problem. When the rig sits for a week or so,
Upon powering ON, the RX is muted, the menu setting shows PA _ _ _, and it
will not transmit but shows a HI REFL message. I have it connected to both a
dummy load and a known good HF antenna. In the MENU, I can not adjust the PA
to come ON again. Powering the rig ON/OFF 5 or more times will solve the
issue. What could be causing this? Thanks Gene

Re: [Elecraft] QSLs

2016-07-26 Thread Gene Gabry
I think what Jorge might have been inferring is, LOTW doesn't have the same
capability as a log checker would to make a judgment that a two way contact
could not have been made on 160m between a station in Chicago at 12 noon
Chicago time and say Australia. What's to say a couple hams might have
coordinated together to falsely upload a contact as mentioned to finish off
an award? The times and frequency and calls match, confirmed contact. Most
hams would not even think of doing this. But, just as is the human condition
in life, cheating happens. I'm sure it happens to some % in the ham
community as well.

LOTW runs on GMT (UTC). If you keep your log in UTC, all will be confirmed.

[Elecraft] K3S Macro Command MICSEL question

2016-07-13 Thread Gene Gabry
I am wondering if there is a more direct command to toggle between the MIC
SEL FP and MIC SEL RP other than having to use the UP/DN command? These are
the two command statements I am using to switch between the two with FP.H
being the normal home position.

To switch to RP (Bias and H already activated) = MN053;UP;CP015;MG003;MN255;

To switch back to FP.H (H already activated) = MN053;DN;CP018;MG025;MN255;

Is there another command or address to directly activate the actual mic
location other than toggling MN up and down? I just want to switch between
those two locations.

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] K3S Macro command XIT

2016-07-07 Thread Gene Gabry
Thanks Wayne! That did it. I don't know how I missed that command string.
This phase of the K3S is all pretty much Greek to me, and I've read over the
programming manual several times trying to absorb it all before
experimenting. After a year of pushing buttons and turning knobs, I am
finally writing commands for functions I use most and want a one touch
button to get there fast.

Thanks again and 73

Gene, N9TF

To set a specific RIT/XIT offset, you can use the RO command. From the
programmer's reference:

   SET format: ROs

where s is +/- and is -. s can also be a space in lieu of +.

[Elecraft] K3S Macro command XIT

2016-07-07 Thread Gene Gabry
Hi

I'm finally diving into setting up command macros, and most are successful.
I thought there was a way to not only turn on XIT, but to also be able to
set an up or down offset. I've tried several different command combinations,
but no luck. XIT turns on but no offset.

Is there not a command string that turns on XIT and allows an UP or DN
offset?

Thanks

Re: [Elecraft] PTT KEY CONFIG setting volatile?

2016-05-23 Thread Gene Gabry
Check the updates to latest firmware version. There is a safe mode and Unsafe
mode for the PTT-Key line. In Unsafe mode PTT-Key line should not turn off.

* PTT/KEY USE WITH THE USB PORT IMPROVED: PC applications can activate PTT and
KEY at the K3S via the USB port's RTS/DTR signals. However, initial setup of
the rig's USB port by the PC may cause pulsed or continuous activation of the
transmitter. This can happen if the computer is turned on after the K3S, or if
the USB cable is not connected. There is now a "Safe" mode (the default) which
disables PTT-KEY transmit until the K3S receives a command via USB, such as a
read of the rig's VFO frequency. To turn on safe mode on/off, go into
CONFIG:PTT-KEY and tap '1' to select "USB SAFE" or "UNSAFE". Exit the menu and
turn the K3S off/on. Applications that use PTT-KEY via USB but never send
commands may require "UNSAFE" mode. In this case, unwanted transmit can be
avoided by turning the PC on before the K3S.

Danny,

Do a test without WSJT running. Set PTT key config to DTR - OFF, then cycle
power on the K3S. Does that setting survive the power cycle? If so, it is not
a K3S problem, look to the WSJT software for the solution.
If it does not survive the power cycle, contact K3Support.

Re: [Elecraft] RTTY

Wes,

I am also curious of any issues that might be unresolved? I've been using
the sound card in the K3S with N1MM+ and MMTTY as the engine, and it's been
plug and play since day one. I don't use VOX to key, as either with MMTTY by
itself or with N1MM+, I use the PTT line, and all is good.
Just curious what I might need to watch for?

Can you be more specific? I was able to set the audio transmit and receive
levels without problem (at least I think so), and the VOX level too for use
with MMTTY standalone (I use PTT with N1MM+/MMTTY).

What else should I be looking for?

Thank you.

Yes, I can confirm K9CT uses BP filters on his 6700's. His main reason for
switching to mostly 6700's at his contest station was for the "simplicity"
of being able to operate SO2R or multi -2 without the need for all the
access cables and extras required with the K3 set up. The WiFi ability that
comes with the Maestro made networking wireless as well. I believe he still
uses a K3S or two at his home station and uses K3S's on DXpeditions.

There are conditions and reasons where each platform can win, with proper
configurations, tools and expectations.

Jim,

Like I implied in my posting, portable operation is often more about
convenience than signal strength.

Your estimate of around 7 dB sounds reasonable. That's about 1.5 S-units, to
use the vernacular. When a band is open, this loss still allows a lot of
contacts to be made.

Example: A couple of months ago my son and I were doing a bit of hiking/bird
watching at Redwood Shores. While Griffin stalked hooded mergansers with his
camera, I quickly set up my KX3 at a picnic table. I attached the whip with
a right-angle BNC, along with the 13' counterpoise wire. 20 meter CW was
very active with EU contest stations, most of them probably running a KW
("or so"). I called several of them running 5 W, and worked most of them on
one call.

I may have been down 7 dB from a full-size vertical, but I got through
nonetheless. And I didn't have to frighten any birds away with my usual
weight-tossing wild-west antenna deployment routine.

Sometimes size doesn't matter.

hand-held at 3 to 5 W (internal battery).

single quarter-wave radial laying on the ground, and compared it with a
quarter-wave vertical (16.7 ft) with the same single radial. The model is
for poor soil, which is typical of most mountainous QTHs. The full-size
quarter-wave will be 7.4 dB louder than the shortened one. That's equivalent
to reducing a 15W signal to 3W. The difference is slightly greater over
better than average ground. The reduced efficiency is due to the greatly
reduced radiation resistance of the shortened antenna.

antennas work BETTER. If you can afford the weight of a means to support the
longer antenna (typically a telescoping fiberglass pole), it's well worth
it! And if a shorter antenna MUST be used, LONGER antenna, LESS coil is
better.

Re: [Elecraft] K3S audio board for K3 upgrade?

2016-03-22 Thread Gene Gabry
This has been an interesting thread to which I have experimented a bit more
and found the AGC setting recommendations from a couple of posters to be
very valuable, and Eric's suggestions on BW settings to be a nice compliment
to play with. Although, my ears still like a little HF, I like the sound of
a BW from 100hz to 2.7khz for SSB and usually the 500hz filter set to 300hz
with DSP. I now have AGC THR set to max and AGC SLP set to 0. I also set RX
EQ to flat and use hi/lo cut when needed. Really cuts down on the high
frequency hash I get from this qth. I leave the AGC settings the same for
SSB and CW and play with BW and cut between the two modes, depending on
conditions.

I've never ever put any stock into any manufacturers built in speakers. They
are there cause they have to be :) For the K3S I use a combination of a pair
of Polk Audio 5 1/4" book shelf speakers (60hz-24kz) and Pyle Pro 3" mini
cube speakers (90hz -18khz), per channel, and the sound is crisp and clear
audio. And, both speaker sets are black to match the K3S and all together
for all 4 speakers cost was $75.00 and change.

The AGC settings were a big game changer to these old ears.

Yes, excellent AF response, very nice for recording, but massive overkill. I
have a pair as well. BUT -- they are also RFI dogs. Keying a 5W 2M talkie
across the room will cause their woofers to move enough that you'll clearly
see it, and they're also susceptible at some HF frequencies.

In ARRL DX, convert cut numbers and enter real numbers. The letter
abbreviations like K and KW can be left as is in your log. If you get '1K',
you can enter that as is, too. Log checking will accommodate all these.

I've even had someone send 1OO with the letter "oh" instead of zeroes.
Should I log and submit the carbrillo file with these cut numerals as they

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] 6M power setting anomaly

2015-12-20 Thread Gene Gabry
Hi Vic,

I have the K3S with 5.33 firmware and see what you see. I believe this is
normal. Page 9 of the manual (Transmitter - output power) implies 6 meters
will be lower power max, although 106 watts is never actually stated. Based
on the statements of a lower max setting for 6 meters in this specification,
it would be a reasonable assumption the max power setting would be something
lower than 10-160m. Also, when setting CONFIG:PWR SET NOR, 6 meters will
operate independent of the other HF bands. Supporting some difference on 6
meters.
I actually thought I saw a thread some time ago from Wayne or Eric
confirming the difference in MAX power sets on 6 meters compared to the rest
of the HF bands, but have not been able to find.

This is strange. Firmware 5.33. On 6 meters when the PWR control is turned
all the way up, the VFO B display only reads 106 watts. On all other bands
it is 110 watts.

I know that the actual maximum power output might vary per band, but
shouldn't the PWR control set the requested power to 110 watts on all bands?

Do others have the same result?

Gene, you can tell N1MM+ to reduce the Radio Polling rate.

Go to Config --> Configure Ports, Mode Control, Audio, Other...

On the Hardware tab, click on the Set button for your K3 port and then select
"100% Slower" from the Radio Polling list. This may help.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Showing Transmit Signal

I wonder if this phenomenon could be related to N1MM+. I have never seen
this happen before (without N1MM+ running). I was using N1MM+ logging with a
lot of functions running. That might explain the delay. Interesting.

Gene N9TF

The K3 is supposed to send a command to the P3 to tell it whether it is in
transmit or receive mode. Apparently sometimes that isn't happening for
some reason. It could be an intermittent RS-232 connection between the K3
and the P3 or perhaps some software running on a PC is overloading the
RS-232 with tons of commands.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 Showing Transmit Signal

2015-11-24 Thread Gene Gabry
I noticed this a few times as well with my K3S and P3. When it happened, I
was running a frequency, and I would go into TX sometimes before the P3
would unfreeze and the P3 would display my TX peak, following my modulation.
Seemed to maybe happen at some transition of the P3 going back to RX when I
keyed the microphone. Also noticed sporadic freeze decay of P3 after
stopping TX. Most times it switched to RX right away, but sometimes it hung
up for a second or two. I thought I was seeing things!

Any ideas out there?

Works great! I'm only doing RTTY and PSK31 here. MMTTY through N1MM+ when in

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft SP3 External Speaker details

2015-09-15 Thread Gene Gabry
Johnny,

Are you sure that's not a knock off at that price? With the yen devalued,
hovering around 120:1(USD), I would think it would be more expensive in Japan
than what it sells for in the US. I've been to Akihabara many times, and I
would tend to question its authenticity. I'll be back there this October, and
will check it out.

For me, the AFX option was a real "WOW" experience. Over the years I have
been finding I have to turn my head back and forth listening to CW from a
single communications speaker, in order to find the right frequency peak in
my (failing) ears. With stereo configured speakers and AFX on, no more head
turning, and the sound is crisp. What a joy on SSB as well, especially
listening ESSB.

[Elecraft] Travel Cases on Sale

2015-07-14 Thread Gene Sochor
If you are looking for a relatively low-cost transit/travel case for
one of your radios, from the KX1 on up, be aware that MCM Electronics
has a sale on some quite reasonably priced, foam-filled,
weather-resistant cases. I've used a couple of the larger ones as
transit cases for test/measurement equipment shuttling around the
country with no ill-effects for a couple of years, but have no
interest in MCM or the manufacturer.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Tascam US-122MKII

2015-02-26 Thread Gene Worth (wor...@missouri.edu)
Deane:

I have the US-144, but it is similar enough to be applicable. I use the
Elecraft Line Out with a stereo cable to the Tascam Line In (L) jack. You
will need to use a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter to make this work. I use the L and
R line out jacks (RCA) with an RCA to stereo 1/8" adapter. This goes back
to the Elecraft Line In plug on the back.

You can look for the settings in Fred Cady's book for DATA A set up for the
K3. I use FLDIGI and VOX. Works well after getting the radio set up for it.

Now, for the tricky part. You must download and configure the USB/serial
port for this external sound card. I use a Mac so have no idea about the
Winblows drivers. I must start the Tascam driver software in the background
in order for the Mac and FLDIGI to see the external sound card.

On the top of the Tascam unit, you want to do the following:
1. Phantom is OFF
2. Mic/Lin is ON
3. Mono is OFF
4. Mon Mix is fully clockwise (Computer)
5. Once you have tuned a signal on your FLDIGI waterfall, then use the
Input Left dial so that you have a blue background with a light "snow" of
yellow dots on the waterfall. Try to do this in a segment of the band
without signals. You can alternatively select a "loud" signal then adjust
the dial until the Input Left LED goes from green to red peaks ... then
back off until it always stays green.
6. The LINE OUT is adjusted differently depending on how your radio is set
up so that you do not over-drive the LINE IN to the K3.

Hope that helps.

I don't know however I was just following the recommended list in the

[Elecraft] [K3] N3flp rig control

2014-11-14 Thread Gene
I don't know what is the real meaning of "rig control" but all I want to
do is have the K3 go to the freq. that is shown on the Dx list when I
click it.

Joe, w4tv suggested to the K3Menu: PTT-KEY set to OFF which I did.
I then set the following on the AClog rig settings:

Connection power =RTS
Ratio polling rate =500ms
Sellected TEST Button, polling rig button came on and K3 reponded.
Click "DONE" button at bottom. (NOT end test).

The K3 now will go to the Freq/Call selected from the DX list.

Thanks to all that responded.

[Elecraft] [K3] N3fjp rig control problem

2014-11-14 Thread Gene
I recently started having a problem with AClog which was working great
for a long time. I suspect I changed something in the K3 settings.

It seems when polling is enabled I can select a call/freq from the DX
list and the rig will follow but it is in transmit. It will only come
out of transmit if I disable polling.

I've checked all my com port selections and they are as they should be.

Any Ideas?

[Elecraft] K3 on 40 meters

2014-10-20 Thread Gene
I have noticed that signals on 40 meters do not appear very strong on my
K3. The audio and signal strength is very low. Other hams in the area
hear signals S9 +5 while these only register S1 at best on the K3.
Antenna type and height are almost identical as I have.

Attenuator is not on and noise reduction has minimal effect. Turning up
the RF gain does not help. Signals on other bands seem to be normal.
Has anyone experienced this?

[Elecraft] K2 Straight key auto detect

2014-09-18 Thread Gene N4FZ
I have tried unsuccessfully to get the K2 to work with my straight key. I
have the small 1/8" two tipped plug inserted and the Inp menu set to any of
the selections, and it does NOT detect the key. In fact, it will
continuously key the K2 whenever the key is pushed down with the Inp in the
HAND position. What is the solution? Thanks Gene

[Elecraft] K3 Noise reduction question

2014-08-31 Thread Gene
When holding in the NR button to adjust noise reduction, I get
F1-1,2,3,4 then F2-1,2,3,4 etc for F3 and F4. Going further this is
repeated for NRmF5, F6, F7 and F8.

Can someone direct me to where in the K3 manual it explains what these
settings mean and/or when to use NR or NRm?

Thanks.

[Elecraft] KX3-2M post install issue (solved)

2014-08-17 Thread Gene Sochor
Thanks to Warren, AB4GE and Don, W3FPR for suggestions relating to my
issue with a newly-installed KX3-2M module, coming up with 22.0
and 44.0 MHz (VFOA, B, respectively) after installation. Should
you encounter this, just holding the "kHz" button a moment reverted
VFOB to 144.xxx MHz, and VFO A remained the wrong frequency.
Using the B>A switch properly loaded 144 MHz into VFO A, and
operation was now corrected.

Those of you who have the menu item PA ON for use with the KXPA100
when testing the new setup without the KXPA100 connected will not
have use of your KX3AT tuner if installed until you turn it off.

Now to find out why nobody seems to use the repeaters around here any
more; Cell phones appear to be winning out!

smoothly. After powering off and on as instructed, however, instead
of a new 144 MHz band, I have now added a band which VFOA says is
22.0 MHz, and VFOB is showing 44.0 MHz instead of 144.0. Restored
the various settings as they were before the install, powered off and
on again, then redid the 2 meter settings, with the same
results. Has anybody else experienced this, or have suggestions?

[Elecraft] Expecting a delivery ... but didn't happen

2014-06-06 Thread Gene

I had the same problem with another item.

Go to the local UPS office. Ask to speak to a supervisor. Explain what
happened. They have very specific location device/software that uses
Google Maps. In my case the driver actually left it next door, about
100 yards at my neighbor's house and the Google Maps picture showed the
exact location..

I went to the house and showed the picture to my neighbor saying, "UPS
said I should show this to you and if the package wasn't here I would
have to go to the police and let them investigate." He said he was
about to bring it over.

Hope you get your unit.

[Elecraft] KXPA100/KX3 working great

2014-02-03 Thread Gene Sochor
For those still waiting for, or building, their KXPA100, the effort
is definitely worth it.

I just returned from a vacation trip to St. Barths Island for 10
days, operating 'vacation styl'-intermittently, and took my KX3 and
KXPA100 with a small switch-mode supply from Powerwerx, operating
from a rented villa. Ran up about 2200 QSO operating late at night,
mostly, using a 33' telescopic pole supporting a variety of monoband
PAR/LNR EFZ antennas as FJ/N9SW. Output stayed right up at 100 Watts
all bands without a waver.

The amp worked great, never got too hot, and its integration with the
KX3 was smooth and efficient. Had everything but the pole packed in a
modest soft, padded test instrument case, which I successfully
checked through 3 different flights, no issues. Reasonable weight,
high performance. Perfect!

By the way, the LNR/PAR EFZ antennas were also super1.2:1 or
better SWR on each of the bands I had with (40, 30, 20, 17 and 6),
right 'out of the box', Since the 40m model is 66' long, I ran the
wire through a round uncrimped crimp terminal that just fit over the
top of the pole, at about the 50% length point, and draped the
antenna like an inverted vee to the deck of the villa. This put the
feed point right at a comfortable level, and made no difference in SWR.

Nice work, Elecraft!

[Elecraft] k3 - JT65

2013-10-24 Thread Gene

Problem solved.
Thanks to Bob, WB4SON and Bill, W0BBI, JT65 is now running well on my
desk top computer with Win7.

To make a long story short my main problems were, (A) Line - In plug at
the K3 had to be Mono, ( I had used Stereo on my lap top). (B) Cable
from line-in had to go to speaker, green jack on the computer.
Line-out cable at K3 to Mic, blue jack on computer. (C) Windows 7 shut
down my Prolific USB to Serial converter but got it back ok. Don't know
why this happened but will keep an eye out for this. (D) Make sure the
com port you set in the setup page of JT65 is same as the USB to serial
converter you are using.

Thank you all.

[Elecraft] K3 - JT65

2013-10-22 Thread Gene
I used JT - 65 successfully on my lap top running XP. However, I am
having difficulty setting things up on a new computer running Windows 7.

Signals are being decoded without any problems but I can not transmit a
signal. My settings are:

Mode: Tx data A, Pwr: 10 -20 W, Mic line out level: 20 ( I have tried
lower and higher values) Mic Sel (Main menu) Line In.

Previously on the lap top I would increase the sound output from the
computer until the ALC would kick in at approx 4 to 5 bars. No matter
how low or high the sound output is now no ALC is present. I can hear
sounds like I am transmitting but there is no ALC or power out.

What am I missing? Any Suggestions?

Thanks,

Gene

[Elecraft] P3 hash

2012-08-17 Thread Gene Trasti
Thanks to all that responded. The problem was indeed the BNC cable provided by
Elecraft. Wish I had posted my problem a little sooner-I would have saved a
lot of time and effort. Once it was drawn to my attention I noticed that the
BNC connectors on the cables provided by Elecraft had a loose fit on the K3 and
P3. I Used an older cable out of my junk drawer, the BNC connectors had a
tighter fit and the hash on the P3 cleaned up instantly.

[Elecraft] K2 MH2 P1 jumper wiring w/5.6k resistor

2012-03-03 Thread Gene N4FZ
I just bought a used K2 that needs to be wired for the Elecraft MH2 mic.
Question: Do ALL the jumpers have to be soldered directly across, as per
instructions with the mic? The P1 strip looks different, (has exposed long
pins, that have pins 1, 2, 7, 8 jumpered and soldered), than the 2008
instruction sheet. It looks like pins 3,4,5 are unused. Any help is very
much appreciated! Gene

set to "Yes" - that allows the RIT/XIT knob to tune in coarse increments
when RIT and XIT are off.

It has nothing to do with ghosts and goblins, just your menu settings.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Know bug?

2011-10-31 Thread Gene Langendorff

I have just discovered something else. With RIT/XIT turned off, turning the
RIT/XIT knob changes the frequency of the K3 and the displays on both K3 and
P3. The rate is 0.1 kHz as if in "COARSE" tuning mode. I see no mention of
this "feature" in the K3 manual.

I thought having the P3 connected to the K3 might cause some interaction so
disconnected it -- same behavior on the K3.

Maybe it has something to do with the date today. The goblins are doing it
to us.
