[Elecraft] Lighting
Working at Collins in the 60’s we had a lab with no windows but we did have 18 foot vertical antennas on the roof. We would have NE2 neon bulbs connected to the RF coax feed lines and when thunderstorms were within 5 miles they would start to flash. We all then went out to the parking lot and rolled up our windows. The rain and lightning would arrive about 10 to 15 minutes latter. The break down and flash voltage for a NE2 is 90 volts! Keep those antennas disconnected when not in use. I appreciate all of the feedback I have received. After some deep digging and a fair amount of research, I have gone with the W4OP. [Elecraft] Alpha Antenna/KX3.
I have just submitted my order for my KX3. As part of the next step, I am continuing my search for an antenna. At this point, I am leaning towards an Alpha Antenna mag loop. Like some, I have HOA restrictions in my first and second home and this somewhat limits me as to what I can put up. I have space on my back deck as well as a terrace in my condo. Re: [Elecraft] K2 - (K2-100)
I have a RS232 cable which I made for another project. I plan to change one of the DB9 connectors to a male version. In essence it will end up being the cable that is shown in Figure 41 of the K2/100 manual, page 55. My computer has a RS232 port and the female end of this cable will go directly to this port. The male end shell will have to be notched since the socket at the rear of the K2 has a bump/tab which prevents someone from plugging in a wrong cable. I am almost positive this mod was designed by N0SS but I can not seem to find where I saw it. [Elecraft] K2 - (K2-100) aux I/O
I have a K2 with the 100W, K2/100, mounted in the top. I want to obtain a RS232 cable with male DB9 on one end and female on the other. In order to make the connection in the back or the K2 it seems the male plug needs to be modified. That is a slot cut so that it fits the key/tab that is on the connector mounted in the back of the K2/100. Is there any problem with this as long as the cable just has the typical 3 wires for RS232 data? Thanks. [Elecraft] K2 with KPA-100
I should have first stated that I do not have any K2 or any amplifiers or tuners. Just asking questions in anticipation of getting a K2. Reading manuals and seeing photos of k2s is not as good as seeing the actual unit. I am aware that the top of the KPA-100 is a black fined heat sink. I was not aware that the KAT2 could not fit below it. Now I know why Elecraft came out with the K3. Confusion reigns at least for me. Think I will just get a KX3 which is very much like my K3 which I have had for over 10 years. [Elecraft] Freq. offset?? -- K3
I believe I solved the problem. It seems in the P3 menu I somehow set the "Ref Cal" value to 700. Perhaps I thought it should be the same as the pitch??? (don't know what the hec I was thinking). In any event I changed this to zero and I am now able to tune to a signal with the K3 and the cursor of the P3 centers at the same frequency. Also now able to tap marker "A", move it to a signal that came up on the P3, tap the knob and the K3 move over to the same signal. Life is good again. Thank you all who responded! I think what Jorge might have been inferring is, LOTW doesn't have the same capability as a log checker would to make a judgment that a two way contact could not have been made on 160m between a station in Chicago at 12 noon Chicago time and say Australia. What's to say a couple hams might have coordinated together to falsely upload a contact as mentioned to finish off an award? The times and frequency and calls match, confirmed contact. Most hams would not even think of doing this. But, just as is the human condition in life, cheating happens. I'm sure it happens to some % in the ham community as well. [Elecraft] K3S Macro Command MICSEL question
I am wondering if there is a more direct command to toggle between the MIC SEL FP and MIC SEL RP other than having to use the UP/DN command? These are the two command statements I am using to switch between the two with FP.H being the normal home position. To switch to RP (Bias and H already activated) = MN053;UP;CP015;MG003;MN255; To switch back to FP.H (H already activated) = MN053;DN;CP018;MG025;MN255; Is there another command or address to directly activate the actual mic location other than toggling MN up and down? I just want to switch between those two locations. Re: [Elecraft] K3S Macro command XIT
Thanks Wayne! That did it. I don't know how I missed that command string. This phase of the K3S is all pretty much Greek to me, and I've read over the programming manual several times trying to absorb it all before experimenting. After a year of pushing buttons and turning knobs, I am finally writing commands for functions I use most and want a one touch button to get there fast. Thanks again and 73 Gene, N9TF To set a specific RIT/XIT offset, you can use the RO command. From the programmer's reference: SET format: ROs where s is +/- and is -. s can also be a space in lieu of +. 73, Wayne N6KR On Jul 7, 2016, at 7:07 PM, "Gene Gabry" wrote: > Hi > > > > I'm finally diving into setting up command macros, and most are successful. > I thought there was a way to not only turn on XIT, but to also be able > to set an up or down offset. [Elecraft] K3S Macro command XIT
Hi I'm finally diving into setting up command macros, and most are successful. I thought there was a way to not only turn on XIT, but to also be able to set an up or down offset. Re: [Elecraft] PTT KEY CONFIG setting volatile?
Check the updates to latest firmware version. There is a safe mode and Unsafe mode for the PTT-Key line. In Unsafe mode PTT-Key line should not turn off. * PTT/KEY USE WITH THE USB PORT IMPROVED: PC applications can activate PTT and KEY at the K3S via the USB port's RTS/DTR signals. However, initial setup of the rig's USB port by the PC may cause pulsed or continuous activation of the transmitter. This can happen if the computer is turned on after the K3S, or if the USB cable is not connected. There is now a "Safe" mode (the default) which disables PTT-KEY transmit until the K3S receives a command via USB, such as a read of the rig's VFO frequency. To turn on safe mode on/off, go into CONFIG:PTT-KEY and tap '1' to select "USB SAFE" or "UNSAFE". Exit the menu and turn the K3S off/on. Applications that use PTT-KEY via USB but never send commands may require "UNSAFE" mode. In this case, unwanted transmit can be avoided by turning the PC on before the K3S. Yes, I can confirm K9CT uses BP filters on his 6700's. His main reason for switching to mostly 6700's at his contest station was for the "simplicity" of being able to operate SO2R or multi -2 without the need for all the access cables and extras required with the K3 set up. The WiFi ability that comes with the Maestro made networking wireless as well. I believe he still uses a K3S or two at his home station and uses K3S's on DXpeditions. Your estimate of around 7 dB sounds reasonable. That's about 1.5 S-units, to use the vernacular. When a band is open, this loss still allows a lot of contacts to be made. Example: A couple of months ago my son and I were doing a bit of hiking/bird watching at Redwood Shores. While Griffin stalked hooded mergansers with his camera, I quickly set up my KX3 at a picnic table. I attached the whip with a right-angle BNC, along with the 13' counterpoise wire. 20 meter CW was very active with EU contest stations, most of them probably running a KW ("or so"). I called several of them running 5 W, and worked most of them on one call. I may have been down 7 dB from a full-size vertical, but I got through nonetheless. And I didn't have to frighten any birds away with my usual weight-tossing wild-west antenna deployment routine. Sometimes size doesn't matter. The reduced efficiency is due to the greatly reduced radiation resistance of the shortened antenna. > > Bottom line -- yes, shortened antennas work, sort of, but full-size antennas work BETTER. Re: [Elecraft] K3S audio board for K3 upgrade?
This has been an interesting thread to which I have experimented a bit more and found the AGC setting recommendations from a couple of posters to be very valuable, and Eric's suggestions on BW settings to be a nice compliment to play with. Although, my ears still like a little HF, I like the sound of a BW from 100hz to 2.7khz for SSB and usually the 500hz filter set to 300hz with DSP. I now have AGC THR set to max and AGC SLP set to 0. I also set RX EQ to flat and use hi/lo cut when needed. Really cuts down on the high frequency hash I get from this qth. I leave the AGC settings the same for SSB and CW and play with BW and cut between the two modes, depending on conditions. I've never ever put any stock into any manufacturers built in speakers. They are there cause they have to be :) For the K3S I use a combination of a pair of Polk Audio 5 1/4" book shelf speakers (60hz-24kz) and Pyle Pro 3" mini cube speakers (90hz -18khz), per channel, and the sound is crisp and clear audio. And, both speaker sets are black to match the K3S and all together for all 4 speakers cost was $75.00 and change. The AGC settings were a big game changer to these old ears. 73 Gene, N9TF K3S 10057 -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Jim Brown Sent: Tuesday, March 22, 2016 4:11 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3S audio board for K3 upgrade? Re: [Elecraft] [K3] 6M power setting anomaly
Hi Vic, I have the K3S with 5.33 firmware and see what you see. I believe this is normal. Page 9 of the manual (Transmitter - output power) implies 6 meters will be lower power max, although 106 watts is never actually stated. Based on the statements of a lower max setting for 6 meters in this specification, it would be a reasonable assumption the max power setting would be something lower than 10-160m. Also, when setting CONFIG:PWR SET NOR, 6 meters will operate independent of the other HF bands. Supporting some difference on 6 meters. I actually thought I saw a thread some time ago from Wayne or Eric confirming the difference in MAX power sets on 6 meters compared to the rest of the HF bands, but have not been able to find. 73 Gene N9TF K3S 10057 -Original Message- From: Elecraft [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Vic Rosenthal 4X6GP/K2VCO Sent: Sunday, December 20, 2015 7:51 AM To: Elecraft Reflector Subject: [Elecraft] [K3] 6M power setting anomaly This is strange. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Showing Transmit Signal
Just wanted to share this tip from Al, as it worked. Although, I started by reducing the polling by 50% first, and that did it. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Showing Transmit Signal
I wonder if this phenomenon could be related to N1MM+. I have never seen this happen before (without N1MM+ running). I was using N1MM+ logging with a lot of functions running. That might explain the delay. Interesting. Gene N9TF The K3 is supposed to send a command to the P3 to tell it whether it is in transmit or receive mode. Apparently sometimes that isn't happening for some reason. It could be an intermittent RS-232 connection between the K3 and the P3 or perhaps some software running on a PC is overloading the RS-232 with tons of commands. Re: [Elecraft] P3 Showing Transmit Signal
I noticed this a few times as well with my K3S and P3. When it happened, I was running a frequency, and I would go into TX sometimes before the P3 would unfreeze and the P3 would display my TX peak, following my modulation. Seemed to maybe happen at some transition of the P3 going back to RX when I keyed the microphone. Also noticed sporadic freeze decay of P3 after stopping TX. Most times it switched to RX right away, but sometimes it hung up for a second or two. I thought I was seeing things! Any ideas out there? [Elecraft] Travel Cases on Sale
If you are looking for a relatively low-cost transit/travel case for one of your radios, from the KX1 on up, be aware that MCM Electronics has a sale on some quite reasonably priced, foam-filled, weather-resistant cases. I've used a couple of the larger ones as transit cases for test/measurement equipment shuttling around the country with no ill-effects for a couple of years, but have no interest in MCM or the manufacturer. 73, Gene N9SW Try this link: http://enews.mcmconnect.com/q/ltCpjDqPPhDmHQ0_fKiuZsazX2Cd5yfW76NGfhhW_UrZypcQDDCuvBbDV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and Tascam US-122MKII
Deane: I have the US-144, but it is similar enough to be applicable. I use the Elecraft Line Out with a stereo cable to the Tascam Line In (L) jack. You will need to use a 1/8" to 1/4" adapter to make this work. I use the L and R line out jacks (RCA) with an RCA to stereo 1/8" adapter. This goes back to the Elecraft Line In plug on the back. You can look for the settings in Fred Cady's book for DATA A set up for the K3. I use FLDIGI and VOX. Works well after getting the radio set up for it. Now, for the tricky part. You must download and configure the USB/serial port for this external sound card. I use a Mac so have no idea about the Winblows drivers. I must start the Tascam driver software in the background in order for the Mac and FLDIGI to see the external sound card. On the top of the Tascam unit, you want to do the following: 1. Phantom is OFF 2. Mic/Lin is ON 3. Mono is OFF 4. Mon Mix is fully clockwise (Computer) 5. Once you have tuned a signal on your FLDIGI waterfall, then use the Input Left dial so that you have a blue background with a light "snow" of yellow dots on the waterfall. Try to do this in a segment of the band without signals. You can alternatively select a "loud" signal then adjust the dial until the Input Left LED goes from green to red peaks ... then back off until it always stays green. 6. The LINE OUT is adjusted differently depending on how your radio is set up so that you do not over-drive the LINE IN to the K3. Hope that helps. gene WG7GW Message: 16 > Date: Thu, 26 Feb 2015 17:03:14 +1100 > From: "Deane Walkington" > To: > Subject: [Elecraft] K3 and Tascam US-122MkII > Message-ID: <003f01d05189$e8602990$b9207cb0$@internode.on.net> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" > > Before I start making cables to connect a Tascam 122 to a K3, I would > appreciate knowing how other users have connected this pair. > > > > Deane > > VK1DW > __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] KX3-2M post install issue (solved)
Thanks to Warren, AB4GE and Don, W3FPR for suggestions relating to my issue with a newly-installed KX3-2M module, coming up with 22.0 and 44.0 MHz (VFOA, B, respectively) after installation. Should you encounter this, just holding the "kHz" button a moment reverted VFOB to 144.xxx MHz, and VFO A remained the wrong frequency. Using the B>A switch properly loaded 144 MHz into VFO A, and operation was now corrected. Those of you who have the menu item PA ON for use with the KXPA100 when testing the new setup without the KXPA100 connected will not have use of your KX3AT tuner if installed until you turn it off. Now to find out why nobody seems to use the repeaters around here any more; Cell phones appear to be winning out! 73, Gene N9SW Sent previously: I just completed the straightforward install of my new KX3-2M 2-meter module in my KX3 s/n 335 with ATU, encountering no issues. [Elecraft] KXPA100/KX3 working great
For those still waiting for, or building, their KXPA100, the effort is definitely worth it. I just returned from a vacation trip to St. Barths Island for 10 days, operating 'vacation styl'-intermittently, and took my KX3 and KXPA100 with a small switch-mode supply from Powerwerx, operating from a rented villa. Ran up about 2200 QSO operating late at night, mostly, using a 33' telescopic pole supporting a variety of monoband PAR/LNR EFZ antennas as FJ/N9SW. Output stayed right up at 100 Watts all bands without a waver. The amp worked great, never got too hot, and its integration with the KX3 was smooth and efficient. Had everything but the pole packed in a modest soft, padded test instrument case, which I successfully checked through 3 different flights, no issues. Reasonable weight, high performance. Perfect! By the way, the LNR/PAR EFZ antennas were also super1.2:1 or better SWR on each of the bands I had with (40, 30, 20, 17 and 6), right 'out of the box', Since the 40m model is 66' long, I ran the wire through a round uncrimped crimp terminal that just fit over the top of the pole, at about the 50% length point, and draped the antenna like an inverted vee to the deck of the villa. This put the feed point right at a comfortable level, and made no difference in SWR. Nice work, Elecraft! 73, Gene N9SW __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K2 MH2 P1 jumper wiring w/5.6k resistor
I just bought a used K2 that needs to be wired for the Elecraft MH2 mic. Question: Do ALL the jumpers have to be soldered directly across, as per instructions with the mic? The P1 strip looks different, (has exposed long pins, that have pins 1, 2, 7, 8 jumpered and soldered), than the 2008 instruction sheet. It looks like pins 3,4,5 are unused. Any help is very much appreciated! [Elecraft] TX DELAY setting & FAULTs
Would the TX DELAY setting at 016mS cause a FAULT condition(s) to occur? I have had mine set at 16 and I just noticed this, and had many FAULT occur. Gene, You may have discovered the "key" - I suspect you have CONFIG: VFO OFS set to "Yes" - that allows the RIT/XIT knob to tune in coarse increments when RIT and XIT are off. It has nothing to do with ghosts and goblins, just your menu settings. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/31/2011 6:52 PM, Gene Langendorff wrote: > I have just discovered something else. Re: [Elecraft] P3 - Know bug?
I have just discovered something else. With RIT/XIT turned off, turning the RIT/XIT knob changes the frequency of the K3 and the displays on both K3 and P3. The rate is 0.1 kHz as if in "COARSE" tuning mode. I see no mention of this "feature" in the K3 manual. I thought having the P3 connected to the K3 might cause some interaction so disconnected it -- same behavior on the K3. Maybe it has something to do with the date today. The goblins are doing it to us.
