Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR

2008-11-20 Thread Grant Youngman
It's remarkable how on any list for any radio, NR is the bugaboo.
Everyone expects magic. There ain't no stinkin' magic. To Bill's
point, it is far less effective -- to the fact of almost being
unnoticable at relatively narrow CW bandwidths.

Having used virtually every 3rd party box known to man in the search
for nirvana, and been in on much of the use, discussion and some
analysis of another high end radio's NR function, I find the K3 NR to
be extremely effective on SSB and CW, when the conditions (be they
band or radio settings) are right for NR to be effective, which they
are not always. As for the conjuration of it all, it's just dynamic
filtering, not something mystical (that is what at LMS algorithm does
-- there's nothing mystical about LMS, either).

Grant/NQ5T

It's interesting to hear the differing opinions on this subject.
While I found the NR on the O7 to be good, it wasn't exceptional. I
thought the NR function attenuated the desired signal, even at the
least aggressive setting.

The best DSP NR I've heard came from the Omni 6+ as well as the LMS
algorithm used in the W9GR DSP box. Both DSP NR occurs in these
devices at the AF level, rather than I.F.

Just curious, does the K3 implement a true LMS algorithm at I.F. in
one of its menu-selected NR routines? Lyle? I've never been too
impressed with some of the other contour optimized NR routines
like that used in the FT-1KMP series.

Re: [Elecraft] Questions from a Liberal Arts Major

Five DB steps that can be on or off with a flicker fall way short
for me as well, a convincing analog meter is 50% of the listening
experience at this QTH.

I'm trying to figure out how to hear an S_Meter, but I suppose we
all listen in different ways.

I'm really surprised, after happily monitoring this list in stealth
mode for some time while waiting for my K3 to arrive, how much it has
begun to sound from time to time like every other vendor/product list,
all of which I finally retired from after tiring of these sorts of
discussions. Or perhaps I just haven't yet realized how many serious
problems my new K3 has :)

[Elecraft] K3 2091 -- alive and well

2008-11-10 Thread Grant Youngman
I know I'm preaching to the choir here. But the ease of assembly and
setup, and (at least my initial take on) performance is just
outstanding.

I thought at first that I would have a terrible time with the one-item-
at-a-time menu system, or even even a bit of a problem with the size
and control spacing. Not so on either count. Having moved to the K3
after abandoning a couple of versions of another high-end radio, I
couldn't be happier. I need to start saving some shekels to add the
KRX3 and another filter set.

No, it doesn't have the audio heft on AM of an R-390 or SP-600, but I
think I can live with that. Maybe it won't be long until the SAM
detector shows up -- or the push-pull 6V6 output stage arrives as an
option :) In the mean time, it's time to drag the Begali back off
the shelf, and work some CW .

[Elecraft] Q re Missing K3 Kit part

2008-11-08 Thread Grant Youngman

I'm missing one lousy part -- a 5/8 nylon standoff that gets mounted
on the DSP board (assembly errata E-7, item 3) to provide some spacing
from the front panel board.

While I wait for Elecraft to see my email on Monday and send the part,
anyone know if this is a show stopper, or if I can proceed and come
back around and install this after the fact?

Thanks ... Grant/NQ5T

Re: [Elecraft] Q re Missing K3 Kit part

2008-11-08 Thread Grant Youngman

Thanks.

After looking more closely, I realized that the standoff just provides
extra stiffening at the connector. I found a hex nylon standoff in my
junk box, that works perfectly. It's was threaded 6-32, but it's a
snug enough fit without being screwed in place once the DSP board is
mounted.

Onward and upward .. :)

It just helps you provide a little extra pressure as you push the FP
to the RF board. It's nylon, it doesn't make a connection so
there's no apparent impact to the circuit.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this query. The issue is resolved.

Just got the covers installed, and I'm about to power up and start
setup and calibration :)

RE: [Elecraft] N6XI NAQP RTTY July, 2007 with K3

2007-07-22 Thread Grant Youngman
I'd much prefer to have this sort of thing external to the rig and
just use them to KEY the dedicated input on the rig.

Couldn't agree more. I think this stuff is made integral, even if barely
usable in any other than a lets see if this really works mode, to get the
blood heated up, feed the hype, and little else.

It's pointless and generally exceptionally poor in performance compared to a
simple PC and external software option, which virtually anyone owning the
radio has access to for essentially no money.

But you can tell from this thread (and old threads on the 7800 list for
example), that this sort of think is seen as a wow factor, even if it
turns out in the end to be little more than artificial flavor in the icing.
I don't know why the developers waste their time, other than at the behest
of the marketing department.

RE: [Elecraft] K3: elaborate on the DSP at AF

2007-05-30 Thread Grant Youngman

Bandpass filters, for example, operate at IF and at AF. It
 would be tedious
to list which functions occur at IF and which at AF, and some
 may change with
 future firmweare releases.

But, it is very important important in at least two areas -- notch (auto and
manual) and noise reduction.

There is a substantive difference in performance and effectiveness depending
on whether these functions are inside the AGC loop at IF or if they're done
after the fact at AF.

That would be good information to have .

Thanks .. Grant/NQ5T
