I can't imagine that you would have any problem with just plugging
the KUSB into the USB port on the PC with Win7 and let it find the
driver. I don't have a KUSB, but I use FTDI USB to Serial cables and
have not had a problem with Win7 finding the proper driver for them.

Win7 found everything it needed to use any of the popular logging
programs with USB to Serial cables for the K2, K3 and WinkeyerUSB.

on another band. In the NAQP mults count on every band (including 160),
and you change bands a lot.

I was reminded again of a K2 firmware "bug" that has been very annoying to
me: after changing bands, the K2 transmit power is reset to zero. I takes
several dits for the power to come up to 100%. That means if I change
bands, the first station I call gets something like "AOGW" instead of
N4OGW! If I forgot to hit the tune button or send a string of random dits,
the station I was calling frequently came back with "?" I'd rather not
have to QRM other stations "tuning up" every time I change bands.

Is it possible to make the K2 start out at 100% TX power? Is this supposed
to protect the finals?

In the NA Sprint contest (coming up in September!) this is a really big
deal. There, you must QSY after calling CQ, and if the station I am
calling misses my call, I may never hear him again!

I use Logger 32 connected to the DX Cluster through the Internet and
have noticed that when I click onto a Cluster spot, the K2 correctly

cancelled and the K2 returns to its default setting of no SPLIT.
This happens whether the Secondary Menu SPLT option is set to NOR or
PER.

Is this the norm, and if so is anyone aware of a mod that can be done
to prevent it happening, please?

Chris

The short answer is yes and nothing!
Yes it is the norm and nothing can be done.

Then the longer answer That's how Logger 32 works. It will not
send split
frequencies to the DX Cluster nor will it recognize them from the
cluster. The
ham who writes Logger 32 does not believe in split operating. Every
time the split
subject comes up on the reflector for Logger 32 it results in a

sometimes volatile, thread happens on most reflectors, doesn't it?

Logger 32 is a fully featured program with more stuff than I use - the
price right and

it does have a few things that are whims, or beliefs of the software writer.

The Kenwood MC-43S is a good microphone, however you said "for Contests

It is very difficult to either keep a log sheet with pen or pencil, or
to type on the keyboard
and picking up the microphone on every QSO.

I would recommend one of the Heil Prosets, and the Heil foot switch to
give you hands-
free operation and make it easy to log the QSO's while you are talking.
We have used
them with the K2 on several DX trips to FP, V47, etc and they have
preformed very well
with the K2 (and other radios). My favorite with the K2 is the Heil
Proset IC with the

Heil Icom adapter, and the K2 microphone header set up for Icom.

The K2/100 can handle the voltage/current requirements . But he
relay in the Ameritron amps is not the fastest relay to pick -- it
takes at least 50ms or more.
During that time the K2/100 sees a high SWR during this time and shuts
down the amp, so you start sending and the amp has no output - and you
never know if you aren't watching the meters. K6XX has a "relay
accelerator" circuit on his web site that works great in speeding up the
relay - my AL-1200 with this circuit built on a terminal strip has not
failed since I put it in place.
Doesn't happen with other radios and the Ameritron amps Just the
K2/100's.

Geez, thin line between sarcasm and reality, as I read it, although I've
wondered about that sometimes listening to 75M SSB on my K2 (see - it's
on a topic about K2's!).

This discussion is going on at the QMN/NREN reflector much more objectively!

I think we all need to lighten up and go along with the changes because
the only thing that never changes is change its self. And with some
objectivity we can make it better.

And another K2 comment:
This coming November look for FP/K8DD FP/AC8W and others.
We will have about 4 or 5 K2/100's and a collection of amps and beams
and wires from Miquelon for CQ WW CW.
PSK-31 and RTTY before and after the contest.

This is a schematic that I have used to switch between two K2's.
I do not operate that much SSB, so I did not include the relay to switch

but the logging programs that I use (CT, Logger32) switch the keying and
amp T/R line using

Pin 14 on the LPT port.
You could also do it with a manual switch.

Logging programs are like wives . find a good one and stick with it!

My choices would be:
For general logging - Logger32 - very full featured for awards and all

www.kc4elo.com

For contesting -
DOS NA Logging Program. It covers QRP-ARCI format contests. But

AGC - was [Elecraft] OT-Preserving CW memories

2004-12-13 Thread Hank Kohl K8DD
I was at VO2AAA in Labrador City for CQ WW CW with K2/100 #850 and an
AL-1200. We were next to a residential area with a very high line noise
and precipitation static.
On 80 and 160 meters with the AF gain about 3/4 way up and riding the RF
gain and DSP with noise reduction made some of the second & third tier
stations copyable. Sometimes you have to be really fast on reducing the
RF gain to save your ears!

I don't really like the "sound" that I get out of my K2 with the DSP, but
when you are digging stations out of the noise the NR and the DSP filter #1
really helped.

The K2 as the run station was good for about 3000 Q's, the mult station for
a couple hundred. And 3.4M points. Think I remember working a couple
calls from this list!

Ron and all,

Are you aware that reducing the RF gain will reduce the AGC action as

With this technique, the residual AGC provides some 'limiting' protection
for the ears while allowing one to dig for really weak signals - this is
applicable at any bandwidth, but more so for wider ones.

73,
Don W3FPR

- Original Message -
To this day I still prefer a wide filter, even with moderate QRM. With my K2
on CW, I use the SSB filter more than any other. I love being able to keep
track of what's going on around the frequency I'm using. The trick of
course, is to turn off the AGC so stronger signals in the passband won't
depress the receiver gain. One of these days I'll add a hard limiter to
protect my ears. The dynamic range of the K2 allows really huge peaks to
come through without the AGC.

Re: [Elecraft] KNB2 (or any NB) performance

2005-01-02 Thread Hank Kohl K8DD
From sitting at my desk with 2 K2/100's and an IC-746 and an
IC-706MKiiG in the truck .

It seems that noise blankers in general .
Work sometimes
Don't work sometimes
degrade signal quality sometimes
don't degrade signal quality sometimes
Coupled with (or without) a combination of pre-amps, attenuators, DSP
noise reduction and / or the DSP filters .. You could even add one
of those noise reduction boxes that use a sense antenna.
You might get rid of the noise. Or you might not!

The KNB2 works real well for a $40 noise blanker. How many would be
willing to pay several hundred dollars for the noise blanker that I'd
bet Wayne could have designed?

But it's just like paddles, cars, wives and cold drinks . one
size/type/model doesn't fit all. I could say "use what works", but that
may not be politically correct in this case - so I didn't!

73HankK8DD

John Huffman wrote:

I'm in a noisy city environment. The KNB2 works 70% of the time.

I have found that messing with the pre-amp and attenuator sometimes
gets it to work.

Also, I can only remember a few times when high or low threshold made
a difference and only once where NB1 vs. NB2 made a difference.

The NB2 is adequate most of the time. I built my K2 to have one of
the very best receivers available, regardless of price. For low power
draw and portability, the K1 and KX1 fit the bill nicely. But, the
prime draw of the K2 is it's top performance.

It would be great if the NB2 could be brought to that standard.

On CW, it depends on the amp. If it is the "traditional" amp with a

However if you get a QSK amp, like some of the Alpha's or TenTec's, you

The other pair I got the new ear piece covers that look like a stocking.
They are better, but I can't tell you why, but they just don't feel

Neither of them keep a whole lot of ambient room noise out - like
relays, blowers, kids, wife, etc.

Now for cq-contest reflector .
One short thread that I've found (Noisy shack? Here's the cure) recommends:
From KF9YR
http://www.racingradios.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=12
The David Clark headsets have 24 db noise reduction and cost 59.95. It
would be possible

to mount a boom mike on them if you really have to operate SSB!

Also, you could go the K6LL route.
1. Buy a Peltor H10A hearing protector 30 db noise reduction (about $25)

2. Buy two little speakers from Mouser (253-5405) $4 each.

3. Use sticky-back Velcro to mount the speakers in the hearing
protector. Unless you have ears like Dumbo, there's plenty of room in
there. Dumbo may have to pluck out some foam to get more clearance. Just
run the wires over the ear cups. I used speaker wire from the 99 cent
store, but RG-174 might be nicer.

4. Buy a Heil HC-4 or HC-5 element (about $33)

5. Take a one foot piece of #14 copper wire and solder a copper penny to
one end. Glue or Velcro the HC-4 to the penny. Twist the other end of
the wire around the headband wires of the hearing protector.

6. Glue some of the acoustic foam that comes with the HC-4 over the mike
aperture to protect it.

Then K8DO recommends ANR aircraft headsets.
Be sitting down when you check the prices at
http://www.anrheadsets.com/products.asp

They appear to be top of the line.

There are some nice stereo headphones out there that sound ok, but I
think I'm going to try a pair of ear protectors and the Mouser
speakers. Or maybe take the speakers out of one of the Heil's.

Maybe it's time for an Elecraft kit - Hearing protector, speakers and a
cord. Boom microphone optional!

Hi,

I am going to operate a little in the CQ WW 160 meter contest this weekend. My

try using my 20-meter quad as a receiving-only antenna.

The question is: the quad is right next to my inverted-L transmitting antenna.
If the quad is connected to the K2 rant input, is there any danger of
damaging the K2 when transmitting at the 1.5 KW level? 100 watts?

Re: [Elecraft] SO2R setup

2005-02-02 Thread Hank Kohl K8DD

In CT, CTWin, NA contesting programs the PTT delay is
used to immediately key the radio (and amp, if used), delay
the keying from the program for a user defined time, send
the CW from the PC buffer and quickly drop the PTT.
PTT delay will not work with the K2 because it is common

to the dit line, or it will key the radio to full power, depending
on how the keying is set up.

I'm not sure about N1MM WroteLog and TRLog, but I believe
they are the same.

I have a box with a couple relays and a transistor to use LPT1
pin 14 to switch the keying line, amp relay line and eventually
(when I get around to it) switch RX audio.

Probably by the time I'm done with my homebrew box I'll have
the price of a DX Doubler and then some in it!

Just as a reminder to those of you who are contemplating SO2R operation with

will work fine, but I believe there are some that key both rigs and depend
on the PTT routing to select the proper transceiver. I am investigating the
methods used by various programs right now.

There is a 'cure' - take a look at my 'PTT for CW' article on my website

Re: [Elecraft] K2 - NOISY POLLING

I got rid of the computer polling noise on both of my K2/100's by
removing the right side panel and tucking the ribbon cable up as
high as possible - away from the main board.

Not that I would recommend doing it the way that I did it (with
the power on and CTWin up and running), but I could hear the
polling noise go away on each radio as I tucked the ribbon cable
up as close to the top cover as I could get it.

Again I would not recommend that you do it with power on unless
you like living on the dangerous edge of life in the K2 lane!!

Does anyone else have a problem with noisy polling with their K2 when
used with a computer logging program, and is there a cure for it?

I have two K2/100s which both have the 160m, NB and DSP options and
one has the SSB option. I am using N1MM Logger with an old desk-top
(about 300MHz) computer under Windows 98 and when I listen to the SSB
K2 on any band with the AF gain at minimum, I can hear a soft pulse
every second or so. This does not increase as the AF Gain is
advanced and normally the sound of signals, etc masks it, but it is
slightly annoying when tuning on a very quiet band.

Re: [Elecraft] Trip to Canada

2005-03-03 Thread Hank Kohl K8DD

Yes, you can take it along.
You should, however, take it in to US Customs at the border crossing and
have it registered on a Customs Form 4457. That will show that you had
it when they looked at it! And, when you return to the US and the
Customs person at the re-entry point asks "what are you bringing back
with you?" and you say "nothing" and he says "what about that radio that
you bought in Canada?" . you will have the piece of paper that says
you had it before you entered Canada.
If the Customs person wants to be a complete PITA, he can pull you into
secondary and make life miserable.
If you have the original receipt for the radio, complete with the serial
number, that should work too.

That said . I have gone to Canada and returned probably several
hundred times with radios and other electronic "stuff" and only been
questioned about Form 4457 one time . and that guy was almost a PITA!

And that said it is far better to be prepared because US Customs
can be one place that it is NOT better to ask forgiveness than it is to
ask permission! So my best advice, after quite a few DXpedition trips
that have taken us into or through Canada would be to take the safe
route and have the paperwork!

And you can have fun operating /VE3!

I would agree with Don! The K2 & KAT2 should match it great . with

When I was a young General in about 1959 or 60 I had great luck on 80 &
20 AM with a 60 - 65' longwire from the second floor window out to a
tree. The shack was on the first floor with about 40 ft of coax of
questionable quality, and I used a tuner. (WRL Globe Chief 90, homebrew
cathode modulator, WRL tuner and an SX-99 and a homebrew TR switch).
The more OT's that told me it shouldn't work, especially with no ground,
the better it seemed to work!

Give it a try and be sure to report back when you put the K2 & KAT2 on it.

Tom,

The KAT2 should adequately match the antenna system that you have, but I
would recommend that you scrap the coax and feed it with open wire line
because the feedpoint impedance on 40 meters and above should be a lot
greater than 50 ohms - the line losses and SWR on the feedline should be
rather high.

BTW, you could add a couple radials cut for 80 meters and use it on that
band too - the 60 ft wire is almost a quarter wave on 80 and it should
behave similar to a 60 ft high vertical (with some horizontal radiation too
depending on how much it slopes)

Depending on the amplifier, you may need to use a "relay accelerator"
circuit to force the amp's t/r relay to close fast enough to avoid the
KPA-100 shutting down.

Re: [Elecraft] KAF2 v. KDSP2

2004-07-22 Thread Hank Kohl K8DD
In the CQ 160 CW contest this past winter we used my K2/100 (SN 850 A)with
the KDSP2.
No receive antenna (that's a whole story by itself!) and an Inverted-L with
a flock of radials.
Probably 80% of the time we ran with out any NR or DSP filters. If you
could put a dollar
amount on multipliers, the KDSP2 got us about 4 non-North American mults
that we most

likely would not have been 99.9% sure that he was coming back to us without it.
In the month or two after the contest the thing got me another 5 countries
that I probably

would not have heard well enough to work.
Would a KAF2 done that? Don't know - the other K2/100 (SN 3519 B) has a
KAF2 but no

160M board in it yet, but I don't think so.
That said, I don't like the KDSP2 at all for normal QSO's or HF contesting
(160 is MF), but
it's like that hammer drill I talked the wife into letting me get -- when
you need it to do the

job, you're glad you have it.
And the clock is cute!

kind of circuit would this require or could I just parallel

the lines together?

I don't use the internal keyer in either of the K2's either, so I parallel
the lines together. I use phono jack cables for most everything and use a
"Y" phone cable to join the memory keyer and the PC keying lines. Works great.

Switchers probably won't induce hum, but might cause in-band birdies by
virtue of their switching frequency and (for some) lack of adequate filtering.

OK here's the new program!

Supplies with real transformers can cause hum in the K2
Supplies with switching can cause birdies in the K2

What's the option? No power supply?
No power supply, No hum, No birdies, No problem?
Well, the sensitivity goes to Hell in a handbasket.

The solution?
The new K2-PSQ and K2-PSH

K2-PSQ is a 4 amp power supply to power your K2 with a bit of current to spare.
K2-PSH is a 25 amp power supply to power your K2/100 with a bit of current
to spare.
Both power supplies fit in an enclosure that fits right under your K2 or
K2/100. How do they do it? SMT - the new technology. Brought to you by
the Godzilla PoWer company, Surface Mount Transformers that can deliver up
to 1 watts of live of power. In conjunction with Elecraft LLC, and
QRP-L, Godzilla has miniaturized their line of very high power supplies to
fit into the Elecraft KAT-100 1.5" enclosure with 99.89776% regulation
(mandated by qrp-l, and several 6's).
Just send the name of your financial institution and a letter from them
with a line of unlimited credit to . well, you get the picture!

Ok . wife brought the little white pills to calm me down and said she
will let me go back to the shack for some 40M cw in a short while. They
tell me I haven't been the same since Godzilla came out with the 3 db per
hundred feet gain special coax. Guess I never should have ordered that
1000 feet spool!
