[Elecraft] Wireless SNAFU

2010-06-19 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Elecraft List  Readers:
I bought a new PC to manage my home wireless network, along with a new
Verizon modem/wireless router  - lighting took the old ones out
earlier this week but not my K3 and K2 and other radio equipment.
The new Compaq is much faster than the old computer and runs Windows
7. The wireless is working and I can connect to the internet from the
new computer but neither my XYL's MacBook or my HP/laptop can connect
to the wireelss system.  The Geek Squad at BestBuy wasn't much help,
saying only" it happens with Window 7 and the best way to resolve it
is with a home visit"... starting at $149.95!
I have been to the control panel to trouble shoot the "network and
internet" connection but it's  unable to diagnose any problem.
Have any of you experienced a similar problem and , if so, how were
you able to resolve it?

[Elecraft] KAT-500

2012-08-02 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Originally Elecraft estimated an August 15 shipping date for the KAT-500 but,
realistically, did you really believe it?
Of course not, delays are bound to come along and if it ships during the Aug
31-Sept 7 window now posted, I'll be a happy hambut realistically,
it might be later but it'll be worth it. At Dayton, I ordered the 2nd KAT-500
and am looking forward to receiving it!

Dayton - kit orders received after mine are being shipped but then my Dad

[Elecraft] K4 Already!

2015-04-02 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
A K4? With all the upgrades Elecraft has supplied and the options I've added,
there's no doubt in my mind that my K3-100, serial #3448, is now a K4. I sold
my first K3, #0178, and that was the worst radio decision I've ever made - w/o
doubt! If I still had it, it'd be the equal of my #3448 - no question!
Thanks, Elecraft, my K3 just keeps getting better!
73 & keep the improvements coming!

P3 Panadaptor, too, but can't recall serial #!

[Elecraft] Titanic radio traffic link

2012-04-12 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
The sinking of the Titanic
A very interesting version of the wireless narrative of the sinking of the
Titanic is offered by the BBC World Service. BBC producers used computer
generated voices of actual telegraphic exchanges to simulate the frantic
network traffic.

I expect this is of deep meaning to all amateur radio operators. The very
foundations of our service are clearly laid in this narrative. You'll hear
urgency, courage and disbelief from the wireless operators. You'll hear our
on-air jargon even as it is used today. You'll recognise network message
frustrations. You will be amazed when you hear echoes of our amateur radio
service as it is today--especially in times of disaster and recovery. Please
have a listen.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00q89fy

The valent efforts of the wireless officer John George "Jack" Phillips as his
ship sank are beyond description.

Elecraft is taking orders at Dayton for its KAT-500 auto antenna tuner
- my order was #2. $649.95 for a kit, $699.95 assembled.

[Elecraft] K3 & MacLoggerDX connection

2011-10-27 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
A big "Thank You" to the dozen or so who responded to my question about logging
program recommendations for a MacBook; very much appreciated!
I purchased MacLoggerDX yesterday and now am pondering how to connect the
MacBook to the computer. I think I need an RS-232 to USB cable, is that
correct?

[Elecraft] K2-100 For Sale

2011-11-11 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
K2-100 #4991 for sale; well equipped with KAT2 (internal tuner), KSB2, KDSP2,
KIO2, KNB2, FDIMP, and MH-2 hand microphone and Anderson PowerPole cable. It
has Don's (W3FPR) constant-level audio output module installed, as well as the
K6XX CW tuning indicator (blinks the far left LED on S-meter when within 20
hertz of a CW signal). Assembled by a very experienced kit builder (NJ3V) who's
a Naval Academy graduate (engineer) and high school physics teacher; rig has
less than two hours on the finals; non-smoking environment and never outside.
It performs beautifully; all documentation (and it's extensive!). Reason for
selling? I use it very little since acquiring a K3-100 (#3448) about two years
ago. Kit price today for a K2-100 with these options is about $1900. Asking
$950 and I will ship CONUS only. Please reply off reflector to h3c...@gmail.com

[Elecraft] K3 Hum on transmit

2012-01-23 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
K3 Experts: My K3-100 has been flawless in its performance until yesterday. I
had a schedule with W5ZNN who told me I had a hum on my signal; I put my
headphones on and sure enough there it was on transmit. I tried plugging the
Astron 35M directly into the AC outlet instead of the outlet strip - no luck,
hum was still there. I connected the K3 to my SEC 1223 switching power supply
and, you guessed it, the hum is still there. I hate to think there's something
amiss with the K3 but it looks that way. Any ideas?

You know it's hard to tell the difference between a buzz and a 60 hertz

there is no buzz or hum! I'll start troubleshooting the mic cable now!

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Hum on transmit

2012-01-23 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Took the mic connector apart, even the Heil mic (gasp!). Could find no short
on the connecting wires, although I did clip out the unused posts in the 8-pin
connector. Put it back together, connected it to the K3 and, miraculously,
like Phil, the hum/buzz is gone. Have no idea what I did, just glad it's gone
after only 30" of effort!

[Elecraft] Missng parts

2012-02-15 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Well, finally got to open KPA-500 #698. I did a parts inventory and found the
Rear Panel Envelope (#850475) is missing.
It contains some essential things so my build is stalled with the bottom panel
and power supply and left panel done.
Hope it doesn't take days to get to Virginia from Aptos! I know, everyone makes
mistakes but it is disappointing.
RATS!

[Elecraft] KPA-500 low voltage on start

2012-02-16 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Just finished my build and it went together beautifully. My 220 socket is
wired like a dryer 220 socket so I removed the plug from the cable (OK per Dale
at Elecraft0 and installed a 220 plug for the socket. When I start it up the
HV reads .1 (yes, point one) and 0 current. Could I have the neutral and live
backwards? I have a call into Support but he's on another call so i figured
maybe someone out thee knows?

[Elecraft] The fix: KPA-500 low voltage on start

2012-02-17 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Don:
It was an easy fix. I changed the yellow and red wires on the TAB per Dale at
Elecraft (Dale said it didn't make any difference)...I'd had the red one on
because book said that was one for 220 range.
Checked it with interlock manually depressed and got 76 volts, right in the
middle of the target range. Put cover back on and was back to .1 HV - what the
heck?
In checking the activation of the interlock switch, it seems I neglected to put
the nut on the shaft which activates the switch.once I fixed that, all
works FB!
Makes me wonder if the red wire would have been okay for the 220 but I am not
opening the cover again as everything is working well.
Now to hook it up to the K3, just in time for a contest weekend!
Again, thanks for your help!

KPA-500 #698 sings beautifully. A great kit and Dale at Elecraft and Don,

about taking this kit on, don't be...it is a breeze, just take your time and
enjoy as the kit building goes all too quickly! Now for the ARRL DX CW contest

Thanks, Elecraft, see you at Dayton!

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 problem

2013-01-13 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Following up on my High SWR problems (no response from Elecraft Support on
Friday to my email):
I disconnected the KAT500 and KPA500 and connected A4S feed-line directly to
the K3. It loaded beautifully and the internal tuner read 1.0-1. Good, not
the feed line or the K3…
Next I connected the KPA 500 (without the KAT500) and turned the K3 on….the
display "froze" a few characters into the "welcome K4TM" message and the power
button would not turn the K3 off - I had to turn the Astron 35M off to cut
power to the K3. When I turned the K3 on again, I get a blank screen and must
shut the power supply off to turn the K3.
I've had a Kenwood 520SE and a 570D and a TenTec Omni Vii - Drake TR-4 before
all that and I know the K3 is smarter than I am but I have never encountered
issues like this before! Any ideas?
Thanks for listening and any help that is directed my way!
And I guess I won't be checking into the Elecraft net today as a result.

[Elecraft] K3-KAT500-KPA500 issues resolved

2013-01-18 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Hi, David:
A note to say that, as you suggested, I "exercised" the KAT500 over all
bands (10-40 meters) on both CW & SSB sections so there are memories
established for each band.
All is working well and, again, I thank you for your interest and
patience in helping me resolve the issues I encountered. Looking back, the
three real changes were: (1) update firmware in KAT500 and KPA500 [and P3
Panadapter], and (2) to eliminate the data cable connection between the K3 and
the KPA-500 and use the PA Amplifier Key cables between the K3 and KAT500 and
between the KAT500 and KPA500, and (3) ground all units.
Elecraft service is simply the best! Thank you, David, for your
excellent assistance.

[Elecraft] K3 Power problem: won't shut down and blank screen on power on

2013-04-11 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Elecrafters: Tech support at Elecraft is closed at the moment. I had a nice
QSO with W0YY a few minutes ago and when I went to shut down the K3, the
"Power" button did not work. Tried pushing it from a variety of angles, no
dice. I powered down by turning my Astron RS-35M off - that did the trick!
After supper, I sat down for some 40 meter fun and, lo and behold, the power
button worked BUT the display is BLANK…no K4TM welcoming message….TOTALLY BLANK!
Any ideas before Elecraft tech support comes on line for me about noon tomorrow?

[Elecraft] K3 shutdown

Hi, Chuck:
I had the same problem with my K3 using an Astron 35M; tried my SEC1223

tracked it down to the Anderson Power Pole connectors! I am not a fan of those

[Elecraft] N8LP Tuning Relay w/ K3/KPA500 - help, please

2014-07-22 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Elecraft Reflector participants:
If any of y’all use the N8LP tuning relay w/ your K3 and KPA500, I appreciate
your help.
My kit went together smoothly and all ohm meter checks A-OK. When I plug the
relay into the SteppIR control box the green light comes on.
I have RCA phono plug cable running from the PTT connection on the relay to the
PTT In connector on K3 and another from the PA Key on Amp to the LOOP plug on
Relay box.
When I key PTT while SteppIR is tuning, KPA500 does not switch to standby as I
believe it should.
Obviously I’m doing something wrong. I even tried the Key Out connection on
the K3 but that didn’t work either.

[Elecraft] N8LP Tuning Relay success

2014-07-23 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Dick, Jim, & Pete (W4WWQ):
Thanks for your help. N8LP Tuning Relay now working as advertised.
The “Interrupter” was key to getting it to work and once, with the help of Dick
& Pete, I figured the phono plug on the K3 belonged on the Key Out jack and not
the PTT jack,
it works perfectly. As Dick explained, the KPA500 will not switch from Operate
to Standby but there is no power output and no LED’s are lighting
up while the SteppIR is tuning - this is one slick little box!
 Again, thanks for your help!

[Elecraft] P3 trouble

2010-12-26 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Reflector:
My P3 Panadpter #888 went together like clockwork in a few hours
earlier today. On receive it does as advertised and the display is beautiful.
HOWEVER, when I transmit with my K3-100 on SSB, after 2 seconds or
less, the power to the K3 and the P3 cuts off; when power to the P3 is off, the
K3 transmits A-OK.
I have checked to be sure that my cables are properly connected and
they are...the P3 is drawing power from the 12VDC jack on the rear of the K3.
Any ideas on what might be causing this problemBTW, I used an
antistatic mat and was grounded during the assembly process.
Any help will be appreciated!

Mark, Don, & wes-
Well, who knows what caused it!
I disconnected everything and then re-connected all cables - for the 3rd time -
and now it is working as advertised.
Glad Murphy's visit was a short one and hope this problem doesn't return.
Happy New Year!

[Elecraft] K3 Power Shutdown

2011-03-23 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
I've used an Astron RS-35M power supply for about 25 years, that's what I used
when I got my K3-100 #3449. A few weeks ago, the K3 began to shut down in
transmit25 watts seemed to be the magic number...below 25 watts, OK; above
25, dial lights flicker (no error message or High Current warning) and the K3
shuts down. It will turn back on immediately but the same thing happens.
High SWR?...no, showing 1.1-1antenna connected? YES, it does the same
thing with my tri-bander, dipole, and dummy load! Not the antenna or feedline.
Must be the power supply, right? Well, I ordered a Samlux SEC 1223 which
arrived UPS today and that's not the problemK3 still shuts down!

Have I done anything to the K3well, as a matter of fact, I used some of my
VHSL basketball officiating money to add the Digital Voice Recorder. No easy
feat installing that as the front panel has to come off but, hey, I "built it",
I can do it... and did...complete with anti-static mat, etc. DVR works so I
did something right or maybe not

My Icom 706MkIIG works fine with the SEC 1223 and all the antennas, including
dummy load. Alas, the problem must be inside my K3...Absent error messages,
plus nothing in the manual under troubleshooting that covers it, I'd appreciate
some help in tracking this problem down and resolving it!

[Elecraft] Power Shut Down Resolved!

2011-03-24 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
Many thanks to Mark, N2QT; John, NI0K; Bob, K2TK, and Don (of course), W3FPR
for pointing me in the right direction to solve this problem!
The reason for the power shutdown? The ground (black) connector in the DC
power cable was not locking in place and causing an intermittent high current
that shut the K3 down quickly - that fail safe feature works wonderfully! In
fact, the black ground connector won't lock in place so I will order a
replacement set. When I substituted my K2 power cable, the problem disappeared.

I know there are many that are fans of the Anderson Powerpole connectors but I
am not one of them!
My thanks to the hams listed above who helped me resolve this pesky situation!

[Elecraft] KX3 radio settings for WSJT-X

2020-08-26 Thread Hunsdon Cary III
I am finally getting around to setting my KX3 Up for FT-8 and have watched
several YouTube videos on setting up the KX3 and read Don Wilhelm’s excellent
paper on setting up Elecraft radios for digital modes (Tnx, Don).

My hang up is the radio settings tab in WSJT-X: baud rate, data bits, stop
bits, PTT, etc. Any help would be appreciated!

[Elecraft] K4 vs. K4D shipping

I’ve been following the “Shipping Status” page for the K4. It’s readily
