[Elecraft] [K2] QRP K2 for sale

2011-03-14 Thread J. Heide
Due to health and financial issues, my QRP K2 needs a new home. This is #6391,
the second K2 that I have built. Radio has 60M, 160M, SSB, noise blanker,
analog audio filter, internal battery, internal tuner, and Elecraft hand mic.
The only non Elecraft mod is a 1/4" phone jack for a straight key on the back
panel. I am asking $850 including shipping to anywhere in the United States.
Please contact me at k6zrx(at)sbcglobal.net

[Elecraft] Re. - O.T. UPS delivery

2010-10-13 Thread J. Heide
Most hams get a lot of UPS deliveries. I am both a ham and restore old cars. I
got to know my UPS driver well. If I know I have a package coming, I try to
flag him down and let him know. Then I leave one of my cars unlocked, he puts
the package in the car, and locks it up! Probably against protocol, but if both
of you are OK with it, fine. If he delivers while you are at work, look for him
in your neighborhood on you way home and flag him down. Mr. UPS is a good man
to be friends with, and every one I have ever dealt with has been a real nice
fellow. Also, once Elecraft gets to know you as a customer, I have had no
problems getting things shipped to my work or my parents house. I even got the
mailman to be good this way, too, but he's a friends uncle.

[Elecraft] K3 - chuffing noise in AM sync RX

2009-12-10 Thread J. Heide
I just upgraded to MCU 3.67 and DSP 2.49. I had been running MCU 3.63 and DSP
2.46. Noise happens with either one. Listening to KDWN 720 out of Las Vegas
with sync AM, USB selected (tried LSB, too), with the CWT carrier tracking
turned on. The radio jumps around 0.720.000, +/- .002 or so as I guess it will
do. When going from 0.720.000 to 0.719.999 or vice versa there is a chuffing
sound in the audio. Turning off the CWT makes it stay on whatever freq I dial
it to, so there is no problem. Tuning across this point makes the same noise
even in normal AM mode. I only noticed this since the radio was tuning itself
with CWT activated in sync AM. Has anyone noticed this on this freq or any
others, or more importantly, in the ham bands?

No big deal, but the firmware people might be interested.

[Elecraft] K3 - 2 meters and MARS/CAP

2009-05-26 Thread J. Heide

I just ordered the 2 meter option and the new wattmeter. On the VHF module,
will it be able to work on MARS/CAP frequencies and/or RX outside the ham band?
Just curious since the K3 is slowly replacing almost all the other radios in my
radio room as more features and options get added.

Th3 K3 seems to do almost everything. I hunt down DX when I'm in the mood, talk
with friends on 160 meters, but mostly work my 6 meter repeater on the main VFO
and listen to 910 KNEW on the sub receiver.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 going mobile?

2009-03-16 Thread J. Heide

Robert,

I have used my K3 mobile a few times. Be sure you have a good, heavy power lead
that goes directly to the battery with the proper fuse near the battery. If you
are going to run mobile for the long term, maybe install some Jack Nuts (like
Molly bolts in drywall, but for metal) and fabricate a bracket. See if there is
a tech bulletin from your car's maker on mobile radio installations. They might
have some warnings on where to run antenna cable. Be sure you use a high
quality double shielded antenna cable. I oversee radio installations in patrol
cars, and keeping he RF where you want it is important. I can't tell you how
the K3 noise blanker works on ignition noise...My car is Diesel.

[Elecraft] K3 - Another feature request

2009-02-16 Thread J. Heide
OK, since everyone is voicing their desires for K3 features, here are mine. Let
me start off that when not working HF, the K3 sits on my 6 meter repeater
frequency, and gets a lot of use there. I have discussed with Wayne in the past
about CTCSS decode and reverse phase burst on CTCSS. I was thinking with that
nice keypad doing nothing on TX that when in FM mode, it could send DTMF tones.
I would like it, but who else might, I don't know. Maybe something for the way
back burner. The K3 appeals to a wide range of users for various reasons. The 6
and 10 meter FM is what sold me on the K3. Some of us like FM DX and working
distant repeaters when the band is open. I know I like hearing distant voices
come in on my machine.

[Elecraft] K3 - KAT3 C10 blew up!

2008-12-25 Thread J. Heide
After running a little Olivia on 80 meters last night at abour 40 watts, I
switched over to my 6 meter repeater channel to call a friend. Upon keying on
6, I heard a little "pop" from the radio area. Didn't think too much of it,
just thinking it was expansion of the case from transmitting (it's cold in the
radio room.) This morning I was playing around with the new auto calibrate and
noticed bad SWR on 15, 12, 10, and 6 meters with the tuner bypassed and
transmitting into my IFR1900 service monitor. Power seemed low at the higher
settings, but I thought it might be the power cable that is wee bit too small.
Then there was a smell...Not the normal burned electronics smell, but a sweet,
smokey smell. I decided to look inside and also to pull the synth to put in the
56k resistor per the new mod. Carrying the radio to the bench, it rattled. C10
on the tuner decided to blow up, so it's a call to the big E tomorrow for a
replacement. Everything else looks fine
except for some residue on the relays. I wonder why this happened. Radio ran
fine on 80, and this happened the first keyup on 6 FM, using a memory channel
for the 6 meter freq. I have run data at more power for longer times in the
past with no problems.

And the KRX3 comes tomorrow

Re: [Elecraft] Phillips "hold-tite" screwdriver mod

2008-11-25 Thread J. Heide
If you have a phillips head screw just getting ready to strip out on you, just
put a touch of valve lapping compound on your screwdriver. The grit will give a
little extra grip to help prevent slippage. Works great, but finding valve
lapping compound is a bit hard these days. I drive a Plymouth with a flathead,
so it's in my shop.

Re: [Elecraft] OT - Looking for a "code buddy"

2008-05-07 Thread J. Heide
Thanks to everyone here, I have no shortage of help
with my CW! I now have some guys to work with me, and
some friendly frequencies to visit. Now all of you
know my call, and that I am new to CW.

It was also pretty neat to have my first QSO be
someone from the group here. Cookie was really great
on the air, and I really started to get comfortable
with the code as the QSO progressed. Oh, and I didn't
cheat too often with the K3's decoder. Only a little
bit in the beginning, then I felt more at ease, and
copied better.

Thank you all so much for the advice (get on the air
and call CQ) and encouragement. I will be checking out
the SKCC and the resources there.

[Elecraft] OT - Looking for a "code buddy"

2008-05-06 Thread J. Heide
I have decided it is time to learn morse code! I have
been using the computer for practice, both sending and
receiving. The K3 in test mode makes a great practice
oscillator. I made my first, very slow, CW contact
today on 20 meters to a very patient ham in Texas. It
was probably the most nervous I have ever been on ham
radio. I would like very much to have a kind, patient,
but honest (brutally so, if necessary) local ham to
work with me on the air a little while each week.
Please contact me off list to set something up if you
are willing to assist me in my learning.

[Elecraft] K3 - Latest firmware (last nite) FM test results, not good for U.S.

2008-05-05 Thread J. Heide
I brought the K3 (#722) to work today once again, this
time to check the FM operation of the radio. I had
calibrated the oscillator a couple of weeks ago, and
it has only drifted 16Hz since then! Measurements
taken on the same equipment, same freq standard
Motorola 2670, Spectracom 8195A.
My FM measurements were as follows:
Frequency was 52.525, did not check 10 meters.
12Db SINAD .47uV -113.4dBm
Looses squelch (13) takes .79uV -109.0dBm to break
Squelch closes at .33uV -116.5dBm
Max modulation acceptance 4.90kHz
TX CTCSS deviation .3kHz (at 114.8Hz)
Maximum mic deviation 2.0kHz (at 1000 Hz mod
frequency)
Max overall deviation 2.29kHz (above two tones)

Here are the issues. The TX deviation and RX mod
acceptance are for narrowband operations. We need the
CTCSS to be around .6kHz deviation and mic audio
around 4.2kHz or so. Maximum overall deviation should
not exceed 5kHz. In the US we are still "wideband" on
these frequencies, in both commercial and amateur
service, emission designator 20KOF3E. We need more
deviation to sound good here in the US. That said, the
recovered TX audio waveform looks great! With mic gain
turned up all the way with the Elecraft mic, there was
no distortion at all on the mod scope. Looked really
nice, better than a $14k Motorola Quantar. Very nice
modulation.
It also simply takes too much signal to break squelch.
Loose squelch should be able to break below the 12dB
SINAD point.

So, please more TX audio, or a way to select
wide/narrow if narrow is needed elsewhere in the
world, and better squelch action.

So, for now, still on the MASTR II for 6 meters...

Subject: K3- TX off frequency

I have the K3 put together, went well, but I am having a problem. I did the
reference oscillator calibration using an Agilent frequency counter with a GPS
reference (I use this setup to set my 100Mhz reference on 6GHz digital
microwave equipment). I was testing tonight with my friend and he was having
trouble hearing me, stating I was off frequency on TX. Our dials matched for me
to hear him fine, and he never had issues when I had the K2 running, our dials
matched. I checked my TX on my IFR1900 and found I was low in freq by 900 Hz.
XIT is off. Filters are FM in FL1, AM in FL2, 2.7 in FL3, and 500Hz in FL4.
Data was entered from the crystal filters properly (I think, looks fine). Where
should I look to find the trouble? I'm stuck on AM right now since it is more
forgiving frequency wise.

[Elecraft] K3 - Band Decoder

2008-04-08 Thread J. Heide

OK, now that the Katiegram has arrived, I need to think about antenna
switching. I have the following antennas that I want to use with the K3
Windom for most all bands
Yagi for 20 meters
Yagi for 6 meters (goes to the XV50)
Vertical for 160 meters
Vertical for 6m FM (which is not used with the K2)

Right now, I have a KRC2 that switches the 20m yagi and 160 vertical on antenna
port 2 on the radio. Since the K3 has 4 band decoder (TTL?) lines coming out of
it, it is easy enough to build logic to pull in the right relay. Can the
"DIGOUT" line be used (with proper buffering, of course) to switch a relay for
changing from horizontal to vertical on 6m? Basically, windom and 6 meter
antennas to antenna port 1 (with the band decoder switching from windom to 6
meters, and digout selecting wither the vert or horiz) and the 20m beam and 160
vert switched on antenna port 2?

I have several RelComm RDL-SR002 relays, one of which I am using with the KRC2
now, so quality relays are not a problem here.

Sorry if this is a bit long, but without equipment in front of me, I have a
hard time visualizing things.

[Elecraft] K3- Katiegram today

Received my Katiegram today for my K3 ordered at Pacificon on October 24th.
Everything I ordered is coming except for the second receiver (AM and FM

I'mnot a CW man, so do I need the 500hz 5 pole filter, or should I changethat
one to something different? I run SSB and digital modes.

Thanks,

P.S. Now I am REALLY motivated to get my antennas checked out and build a band

[Elecraft] Improving the station while waiting for the K3

2007-11-25 Thread J. Heide
Hello all,

While waiting for my K3, I am making general improvements to my station. I am
in the process of building 20m and 6m Yagis and getting them installed. I'm
also working on getting a functional 160m vertical on the air. Also checking
out the other antennas before winter sets in too hard ( might be too late in
some areas) and getting the shack a little cleaned up. A KRC2 is on the way to
handle switching the antennas with some real nice coaxial relays from Motorola
MTR2000 stations.
Anyone else making improvements and preparations for the arrival of their K3 so
it has the best conditions in which to live?

Re: [Elecraft] Help me buy a DMM

2007-09-23 Thread J. Heide
Doug,

My first post here is my DMM advice. When I was younger, i bought cheap meters.
They worked but not for long, just wouldn't hold up to field work. I got smart
and spent the $175 for a Fluke and have never regretted it.
Here's some advice, no matter what brand you buy... Look at the sample rate.
The better meters take more samples per second, so the display is updated more
often. Some cheap meters only update the display every second or so. You will
miss peaks and dips when tuning circuits because of this. My Fluke is pretty
fast sampling, but I still use an old Motorola analog meter for some tuning
applications.

Hope this helps in your purchasing decision.
