I have done some research to see if this feature has been discussed /
requested before... After getting back into hobby in the spring of April
2009, I dusted off my old 1000MP and started operating on a regular basis.
It had been in the box for almost 9 years of non use. Anyway, many on
the list had or still have the 1000MP, a great radio. It's fun to be back
active again on HF. I'm trying to catch up for all the lost time by
spending a lot of $$$ now. ;)

Well, this spring I decided to pull the trigger on a K3 after really
getting to kick the tires on several at a couple of N3RS ARRL CW efforts
over the last 3 years. It was time for a new radio and I loved the
portability of the K3 and what I was hearing / using at the N3RS CW contest
operations.

So I put a kit together a pretty loaded up kit version in April and I'm
really loving the K3 and there is certainly no going back to the 1000MP.
It was perfect on a county line expedition I did for 7QP.

Back to the real reason for this email to the list... There is one thing I
really miss from the 1000MP (the only thing really) and it's the auto
memory of the last frequency you used per mode / band. I'm sure this
wouldn't be fore everyone so it should be optional. I really like how if
you were operating on 14008.5 CW for example and you pushed the Mode for
SSB, you will change to SSB (obviously) and the frequency would jump to the
last frequency you had used SSB on for 20 meters in this case, 14220 for
example... if you popped back to the CW mode, you would jump right back to
14008.5 in this example. I find it really clunky to change the step or
manually enter a frequency. It was so nice to get you into the band area
for the mode automatically and then just tun around from there.

Have I missed something obvious for the K3? Is there a way to creatively
do this now? With a macro maybe? I tried to hunt around and see if
someone had the same question or suggestion, but maybe I'm searching for
the wrong terms.

Re: [Elecraft] Will a casual SSB operator enjoy the K3?

2013-04-04 Thread J.K. Hooper
Tom,

I am a mostly casual SSB operator and I am loving my K3. It took a little bit
of fiddling with to set up it up - I made adjustments to AGC threshold and
slope. I enjoyed learning about these settings and was surprised by how
much they allowed me to adjust the audio for my listening pleasure. If you
search the archives here, you will see messages about the K3 being a "noisy
receiver." And I thought mine was, too, but those afore-mentioned controls
do amazing things.

I am not a EE by background, but I do enjoy learning. I used Fred Cady's
(KE7X) book to great advantage in making adjustments … not hard, and something
to learn. I followed his step-by-step instructions, and experienced how the
radio would respond.

Also, I definitely enjoy reports from listeners that I have "great audio" using
either my Elecraft MH2 mic or my Yamaha CM500 headset with boom microphone.
These are unsolicited reports, and I certainly enjoy getting them.

I bought the K3 last October, and I built it myself - great fun doing that,
too. No EE experience required. And I have made additions to it over time …
new filters, and the P3.

I'm operating my K3 with the P3 pan adapter, and wow, is that a fun addition.
The P3 has totally changed how I tune in stations, and made it LOTS more fun.
Words can barely describe how much fun it is.

I spend a fair amount of time working at my computer, with the K3 on in the
background, and I am listening to stations. I may glance over at the P3 and
see, on the waterfall display, a new station pop up.I'll spin the dial, and
tune them in, and have sometimes been the first to work the DX before a pile up
developed. That's fun. I want to operate my K3 at field day this June …
and the P3 will be right there next to it.

The P3 helped me see where a DX station was working split, 5 to 10 up, and I
was able to see which frequency he appeared to be listening on.I went to
that frequency and worked the DX.The way I did this was to see where he was
transmitting, and when he was not calling QRZ but speaking to an individual
whom I could also hear, the water fall display clearly showed the second
frequency.

I'm still a casual operator, and my experience has been fantastic with the K3
and with the P3.Wouldn't have it any other way. Now, all I need is more
antennas.

Re: [Elecraft] A Rob Sherwood's talk in Dayton

2013-06-07 Thread J.K. Hooper
Keith,

I, too, think I see your point. That point is that one strategy a company
could take is to continuously introduce newer, better products, ones which
might cannibalize sales of previous products with each new product
introduction. I worked at HP, and I think that was the strategy for the
printer division. I think this is a good strategy for a consumer market
place. This worked well when sales were reasonably high volume.

Arguably, the best aspect about the Elecraft statement which you quote is that
it exists and guides the company investments.

That statement appeals to me.I like knowing that my radio will continue to
be supported by my vendor and that its re-sale value, when I kick the bucket,
will be higher than otherwise.

So, to Elecraft, one benefit is that the strategy appeals to what-I-think is
one of their target market segments - customers who want to be loyal customers.

I see a cost reduction benefit to Elecraft as well. Elecraft is less likely
to need to be supporting multiple products. They can keep inventory down, and
won't have the costs of dealing with "end of support life" issues. And design
costs might be lower, as the company is not introducing as many new designs and
the new designs that are introduced are primarily for completely
new-to-Elecraft functionality. Cost reduction is a big deal for any company.

So Elecraft's strategy totally works for me.

Why would you not make improvements to the K3 just because they can not be
applied to older units? I'm not sure what is to gain by holding back
improvements. As a early K3 owner I would love to see a better K3 offered.
I would have a choice to keep my early K3 or replace it with a improved
unit. Radios evolve all the time. It is disappointing to know a better K3
could exist but doesn't because a new K3 may be better than the an older K3.

That's just wrong. IMHO.

[Elecraft] K3 Macros for mic switching ?

2012-11-18 Thread J.K. Hooper
I want to write two K3 macros, one for selecting the front panel Mic (MH2) and
setting Mic gain and speech compression, and one for selecting the back panel
mic (Yamaha CM500) and setting mic gain and speech compression.

>From my reading of the K3 programmer's reference, I know the following:

- Mic gain command is MG010(000 to 060)
- Speech compression is CP016 (000 to 040)
- Mic select is MN053
- changing VFO AUP or DN

… but I am not sure how to more discretely select front panel mic or back panel
mic, and not sure about whether I need to use the MN255 to exit the MN command
series.

A potential command sequence is MN053;UP;MN255;MG010;CP016…if currently
set on the front panel mic to change to the back panel mic, I think. Though
avoiding use of UP and DN would be preferable.

I have entered two macros that I got from the Programmer's Reference, the
SPLIT+2 and the CLEANUP, and they work just fine.

Advice is appreciated.

[Elecraft] K3 - More reasons I like Elecraft

2012-11-20 Thread J.K. Hooper
I really like the K3 Utility that runs on the Mac.It works. I don't have
to mess around with a manufacturer's Window's based application to do firmware
upgrades by running it under Parallels. These recent rounds of
much-appreciated firmware upgrades remind me how much I value the decision that
Elecraft made to support the Mac version of the utility as well as other
platforms.

I like the K3-available USB/Serial cable with firmware … it works without my
having to pull out my hair the way I did on my previous XCVR with my
made-in-China cable. Then again I don't have much more hair to pull out.

The 58 beta that improves text decode works very well. I'm new to the K3 and
don't know what it was like with a previous firmware version.I am working
on learning CW, and the text decode feature brings another degree of enjoyment
as I continue on my learning path.

I like the serial number decision … to not camouflage serial numbers the way
many manufacturers do but rather to use sequentially assigned serial numbers in
the build order.I am perfectly OK associating my Ham identity with my
serial numbered K3.

I had fun this past weekend casually participating in the Sweeps. I worked
some states and provinces that I had not worked previously because it was
easier for me to hear the stations that were not in the sweet spot for my
dipoles direction.

observation. I really don’t need to know when I am in split (bare with me),
I need to know that I am not in split when I should be. Wayne - I’m not sure
how you would code for this one.

Only once was I in split when I should not have been, and nobody complained.

Re: [Elecraft] Hooking 2 headsets to K3S

2016-05-26 Thread J.K. Hooper
I bought a Behringer Microamp HA400 that I use at Field Day. No, a stereo Y
cable did not do the trick. Having separate audio controls for the two
listeners is important - without it, someone is always complaining of too loud
or too soft.

[Elecraft] K3 - "Birdies" on P3 that tracks VFO A

2016-09-05 Thread J.K. Hooper
Folks,

I’m just seeing, today, that there are “birdies” for lack of a better term that
appear on my P3 and which track my VFO and which are up 50 to 65 Khz up from
where VFO A is located. This wasn’t happening yesterday. There are four
lines about 5 Khz apart.

What factors might be at work that result in this phenomenon? The second
question would be, what to do to remove them?

Re: [Elecraft] Independent Headphone & Speaker Volume

2016-09-12 Thread J.K. Hooper
Russ,

There is a input A and input B switch on the SP3. I only use input A to the
speaker, so when on headphones I push the A/B switch on the SP3 to mute the
speaker.

I have a Behringer MicroAmp HA400 4 channel stereo headphone amplifier I use
for field day, when we might have multiple folks on headphones listening to the
radio. That could be used as a separate volume control for your headphones.

Hi:

I currently feed a powered speaker with the constant line output of my K3. I
can individually adjust that speaker's volume locally and the HP volume on the
K3.

I'm contemplating the purchase of an SP-3. As this speaker is unpowered, I
will have to use the K3 power amp and am afraid that I will lose the individual
volume control versatility I have.

If this is the case - would it be possible to repurpose the sub-rx (I don't
have one) AF gain "ring" to control the speaker amp level. My understanding is
that the speaker out and HP out's are fed by separate DAC's.

Thanks, Russ KD4JO
