I have been unsuccessful in finding an active K4D discussion group. The
ones listed on Groups.io have 20 members and are not accepting new members
or are inactive. So my questions are two:

1) Is there an active K4D discussion group and if so, where?

2). I'm getting a K4D next week and I already have an external display to
use with it. Now my question is, what use would a mouse or keyboard be in
operating the radio?

Thanks,

Dave, K4TO

Re: [Elecraft] TL-922

2023-03-29 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
Josep,

Be sure to install a soft-key interface in the TL-922 before hooking it up to
the K3.

https://harbachelectronics.com/shop/kenwood-tl-922/sk-922-soft-key-keying-interface/

The newer rigs were not meant to handle the voltages on the older amplifier's
keying circuits.

I modified mine with the soft-key board and added the new capacitor block.

Hi guys,

Have a couple of Kenwood TL-922’s around and was thinking to connect one to a

Has anybody done so.? And if so, how have you done the wiring.?
Got 2 K3’s (in fact I have 3 of ‘em, but one not physically at now now) and
maybe one day I can use the spare one with a TL-922 from another QTH.

Re: [Elecraft] Running high power

2022-11-23 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
Al,

I saw your question and saved it, as I knew you would be getting much better
responses than I can give. I have five amplifiers, as I tend to like building
stations.

You received the responses I expected. Grounding and bonding are indeed
important and great information is found on K9YC's page as well as the ARRL
publication "Grounding and Bonding for the Radio Amateur". Yes, mix 31
ferrites are your friend. There are many sources; I bought mine from Pro
Audio. Sadly, many consumer devices are very poorly designed for RF
environments. Some problems can be mitigated, some not.

I do not know if anyone has talked about using a well-tuned antenna system,
keeping SWR low and RF out of the shack.

I am fortunate that the only interference to devices in my home occur on 160,
but I'm sure most of that is because I'm using an antenna similar to a G5RV fed
with 450 ohm twin lead, I short the twin lead and then use an UNUN and antenna
tuner to achieve resonance. (?Marconi "T"?) I do have a counterpoise.

I know many do not talk about amplifiers as they are shamed for using high
power. Whatever. I saw someone at the 2019 Dayton Hamvention with a shirt
that said "1500 watts - 1 watt = QRP!" No shame there.

The one thing I do know, the problems that you can get from a high-power home
installation do not even come close to running high power mobile. That WAS a
nightmare.

The one universal thing about amplifiers is that when the doorbell rings, the
amp gets turned off!

Good luck-this is an interesting journey!

Thank you for all your responses. I did not mean my question to solicit the
thousands of ways of solving this problem, but merely a poll of hams'
experiences running high power. Based on all of the private and public
responses I received, it's about 50% who've had problems with consumer
equipment and high power.

If the problems are caused by simple RF overload of the piece of equipment,
I've never understood why balanced or unbalanced antenna systems make any
difference. If your 1500 W signal induces a large interferer on the circuitry
of your internet modem or garage door opener, the device has no idea whether
you're using a Yagi or a dipole or a vertical or whatever. It's just being
overloaded because it's in the near field of the antenna and has very poor
rejection and filtering. You could have the best-balanced antenna system in the
world and still get into a poorly-shielded modem, couldn't you? The
interference isn't coming in through the wires, it's coming in through the air!

I tend to resonate with K9YC's assertion that there are a whole lot of devices
out there that are designed badly, susceptible to the slightest overload. When
I look at my own situation I notice that I have tons of devices that were
completely unaffected. My telephones, lights, garage doors, overhead fans,
smart thermostat, and many others-- all of which have RF circuitry to one
degree or another-- were never bothered.

Taking the FM radio in the kitchen as an example, you could make the argument
that since its whole purpose in life is to receive weak signals, that it's
particularly vulnerable to a large HF signal. But not a single person mentioned
that they've ever heard themselves coming through their FM radio. I must have
the only cheap table radio in America!

Anyway, I envy those of you who told me, "I haven't the slightest idea what
you're talking about."

I'm sorry you had so much trouble with your KWM-380. My experience is quite

Hi Ed,

I don't recall ever telling you this but your 380 also had horrible TX phase
noise. In the early 80s, we were located within 5 miles of each other in CO,
both running amps. Whenever you transmitted on 80 or 160, the phase noise
would cover the entire CW bands. I don't recall what you replaced the
380 with but I was a very happy camper when you did!

I take pride that my KSYN3A-updated K3 is still one of the cleanest CW
signals on the bands.

[Elecraft] OT: KWM-380

2022-03-30 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
OK,

I know this is the Elecraft list, but since the topic of the Rockwell-Collins
KWM-380 seems to be of interest, I have one (serial number 14), and yes, it is
no comparison to the rigs of today, especially the K4. It was introduced at
the 1979 ARRL Midwest Division Convention in Cedar Rapids, IA with a price tag
of $2,995 without options. Using an inflation calculator would put it at
$11,704 in today's dollars, fairly close to the cost of an ICOM IC-7851. It
really is a sweet radio, and VERY fun for non-competitive operating. It truly
was ahead of its time. Only 3000 of these units and the HF-380 (its commercial
cousin) were made. Production ended in 1986, and was the last amateur radio
unit made by the company.

I don't want to continue an OT discussion here, but if you have an interest,
please look at my QRZ.com page for a few pictures.

Re: [Elecraft] Plug on KPA-1500

2021-08-05 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
David, I was hoping someone from Elecraft would have stepped in to answer your
question.

I assume you are in the USA.

My KPA-1500 came with a 6-20P 240V plug like here:
https://shop.worldcordsets.com/shop/categories/NEMA-620P-Power-Cords . Your
picture did not come through, so if your plug is different, I would contact
Elecraft.

I was not aware that Elecraft has ever meant the amplifier to be operated on
120V, at least from what the specs say. Elecraft would know if your amp was
wired for 120V.

If your plug is similar to the ones on the link, I'm concerned why the
electrician would have said that it was a 120V cord. The 6-20P is definitely a
240V (USA) plug.

If all else fails, ask him to install a 240V 6-20P outlet for you. Again, do
contact Elecraft if your plug is different from the link above.

I have a high-resolution picture of the K3s and P3 that I use for wallpaper
at my Elecraft station. It is available in the photo section of the

is here:

elecraft...@groups.io | Photo

This file is 1.04 MB with image dimensions of 1920 x 1080 with horizontal
and vertical resolutions of 300 dpi

The k3s wallpaper file above has stunning resolution and quality.

The picture on the Elecraft website (K4front-headon splitscreen) is an 80
kb file with image dimensions of 1060 x 497, with horizontal and vertical
resolution of 72 dpi.

Is a higher resolution picture of the K4 available anywhere?

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 power reading?

2021-02-07 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
When I received my KPA-1500, I noticed I had to drive the LEDS into the
"red" zone to indicate 1500 Watts into my Bird 43 wattmeter with a 2500W
slug, and Palstar DL2K dummy load.

There also was a comprehensive part of the KPA-1500 manual that details how
to readjust the power indicating LED's, so I was wondering - what gives?

The Bird 43 specs have a tolerance of 5% of full scale, which for a 2500
watt slug is 125 watts.

I asked Wayne (or was it Eric?) at a show as to what was used by Elecraft to
calibrate the amp's power meter and was told they used the LP-100A.

So, that is the standard that was used in the Calibration of the KPA-1500's.

The meter itself can be off too. Using more slugs does help things,
but to be really sure, test equipment needs to be periodically
calibrated, which Hams never do. Dummy loads should be measured with a
VNA. So, what you did is a big help, but still can't provide 100%
assurance that it is accurate. I understand that is the best most Hams
can do and probably better than most.

An LP-100A does come with a NIST traceable calibration from the
factory and it can be recalibrated, again something Hams never do. I
have one fancy scope / spectrum analyzer that I do get calibrated
yearly and I use that for a reference. I have a VNA with a set of
calibration standards and use that to measure attenuators / taps that
I put between my transmitter and the analyzer. I admit I do not
calibrate anything else, but I use the calibrated stuff as transfer
standards. I also have a couple GPSDOs as frequency standards to
compare to.

Re: [Elecraft] Difference between a K3 and a K3S

2021-01-25 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
I had the unfortunate timing of ordering a K3 about 2 months before the K3s
came out. My serial is 8964 and I have the new synthesizers which were
factory installed. I believe the K3s started at serial number 10,000.

[Elecraft] Separate Elecraft K3 and K4 Reflectors on Groups.IO

2020-08-30 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
To all,

This thread could go on forever. Some want a separate group, some do not.

The fact is it is up to the individual as to whether they want to
participate in a separate group, the main group (this one) or both.

The good part is that when Wayne and/or Eric have a special announcement,
they do make an effort to post on the Groups.IO reflectors. I believe they
monitor the separate groups (elecraft...@groups.io and elecraft...@groups.io
, but I do not have confirmation on that.

The bad part is if you just participate in the separate group, you may miss
something. If you participate in the main group, there are voluminous
e-mails that do not deal with your radio that you have to go through and
delete.

I have moderated the Elecraft-K3 list for over 10 years, and just signed on
to moderate the Elecraft-K4 list. They do serve a purpose, and all are
welcome to join.

The lists are there, and should you wish to participate, you are certainly
welcome to do so. The traffic on those lists will not be as voluminous as
this reflector, so joining both shouldn't max out your e-mail box.

I don't. I filter each Elecraft gear item in separate subfolders under a
main folder called Elecraft.

The real problem with this is the shear lack of users of this list to
mention the type of Elecraft gear they want to talk about.

Many users of the K3 for example, probably the most used gear, think:
"If I ask something about a setting of something everyone should know
I'm talking about my K3", so they end up in the main folder and I have a
hard time to get rid of these messages...

Messages from users of the digest that do not change the subject line:
Those messages are filtered straight to the trash... When I close
Tunderbird the trash is emptied automaically.

If only we could stick to the RULE that one starts an item with the type
of gear I would be very happy because the filter can take good care of this.

Please use the reflector and do not divert to yahoo/google/groups.io
etc. Share information at one place, do not split it up.

Joe, just a note on SPE amplifier interfacing, is that not all rigs are
supported for cat frequency read interfacing or even band switching.

This is essential for the SPE atu (if fitted and active), to set its tune
setting before first keyup on band preventing a possible swr alarm and
switch to strandby.
Without CAT freq read the ATU had then used SPE internal RF sense freq
counter during that keyup, but not fast enough to prevent that initial
alarm,
so the amp still needs to be switched back to 'Operate' to continue, so CAT
freq tracking is very convenient for the ATU to function before first keyup
on band.

I found DXLab Commander an excellent program in between SPE and transceiver
to solve these situations

For the Elecraft KX3 SPE with freq/band follow ;

https://youtu.be/k87_lkO4mmY

I also use it with my FTDX101MP to follow the SUB freq as well (does not
work direct connected), The FT991 profile in SPE, and secondary Commander
CAT
works fine with either the MP and KX3 as primary Commander CAT connection.
The amp has two inputs and 2 cat connections as you know.
The Commander program is easily switched between the two, or a start profile
setup for each transceiver.

The CAT connection from SPE to PC has DB9 2&3 reversed or a nullmodem patch
cable inserted in series with usual rig cat cable for rs-232 setups.

I'm glad Dave added that to the end of his message, because each time the topic
of multiband antennas comes up, we are told, "That's too lofty a goal for one
antenna. Just put up a resonant antenna and all your troubles will be gone."
All except for the problem of operating on all bands without having to put up 9
resonant HF antennas, that is. I think we do a disservice to the hundreds of
hams reading this by discouraging them from multiband operation just because we
deem it too "noisy" or "lossy" or "inconvenient" or whatever.

If a man or woman, knowing full well the consequences of his or her actions,
chooses to utilize a single, horizontal antenna of no particular length,
ultra-low-loss feedline long enough to reach the shack, and a low-loss homebrew
or commercial manual antenna tuner to operate on all bands, then who are we to
tell him or her that they shouldn't? To do so has always struck me as
presumptuous.

Incidentally, can we do two things? Can we all get over the gross assumption
that we continue to make, that when someone mentions feeding an antenna with
"balanced line" that must mean Wireman #553? There are better alternatives. If
our beef is with Wireman #553, then let's be on with it without condemning
*all* forms of balanced line.

Secondly, antenna tuners are not necessarily lossier than the aggregate of
cables, connectors, wattmeters, filters, switches, elbows, lightning arrestors,
baluns, autotuners, &c., &c., that many folks use. Everything has loss, but in
effect we trade that loss for some other valuable function... like being able
to QSY anwhere, easily. To give you a data point, on 12 meters my station has a
max loss (from transmitter to the antenna feedpoint) of 1.6 dB. I'll put that
worst-case number up against anybody's long run of coax through all the other
junk from their transmitter to their antenna.

Folks, you should not feel inferior for having chosen to operate on many bands
with an antenna tuner. I think the case could be made that the *resonant*
antenna is the compromise, giving up all band operation for some other desired
function. And sadly, sometimes that compromise is made just so they can say
that they're not using a tuner!

Hi Dave,

The K4's internal LCD has a resolution 1024x600, which is very sharp.

We also demonstrate the K4 with a large external 1920x1080 HDMI compatible
monitor. Our h/w should support up to 4K external monitors.

Note that rather than just mirroring the internal color LCD of the K4 on the

external monitor, we can display data independently from the LCD at the same

I wanted to thank Petr, as I did win the auction and received the Elecraft

Does anyone have any history on this key? What were the years it was
available and did Elecraft or Bencher sell/market the key?

What was the story behind Elecraft's licensing of its name, reasons for
discontinuing the product, etc.?

I have performed searches and saw EHam reviews, but I did not much
information other than that.

Perhaps Eric or Wayne have some information to share.

[Elecraft] Will there be a K4

2019-03-24 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
Hmm..

This is amazingly a very similar question once asked as to what we would like
to see in a legal limit Elecraft amplifier

And then suddenly, there was a KPA-1500!

We'll all stay tuned!

[Elecraft] Remote Operating-OT

2019-03-24 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
This topic has already been closed, but let me make a suggestion.

If you have strong feelings about remote operation and you are an ARRL
member, contact your ARRL Director, as they set policy for the ARRL.

Their phone numbers and e-mail addresses are on page 15 of this month's QST.
Find your Division, and contact your Elected Director. They need their
member's viewpoints in order to properly represent their Division.

[Elecraft] Who's your favorite Elecraft Elmer?

2019-03-12 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
I wholeheartedly agree!

Don has helped so many with his vast knowledge and patience.

I have seen him at many Hamfests teaching the masses about Elecraft products.

His comments and answers to questions on this list go unmatched anywhere.

Those who have sent radios in to him to repair over the ages know his
commitment to Elecraft and Amateur Radio in general.

I would like to add my support to Don as my favorite Elecraft Elmer!

Don Wilhelm - I enjoy his down to earth advice that doesn't require
more than a tenth grade education to understand. Note, however, there
are many others well worth listening to also.

I belong to a couple of groups (for other equipment and OS) and I can
assure everyone - the Elecraft reflector is unique. Ask a question and
you will get an answer - without snide responses.

[Elecraft] Coax Switches

2019-02-17 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
I use the Alpha Delta Series. They have SO-239 and "N" connector models, two
position or four position. For the price difference, I always get four
position.

They are not only well built switches, but they do have surge protection (gas)
with a replaceable pill. Their best feature is the very high isolation they
offer:

30 MHz >60 dB
150 MHz >50 dB
450 MHz 50 dB

And dB Loss:

30 MHz 0.1 dB
150 MHz 0.15 dB
450 MHz 0.5 dB

So, I wish these could be remotable. However, they are the best switches I've
found for a reasonable price, and I have many of them in my station.

Oh yes, on the outside of my house, I have polyphasers.

I do use a number of Daiwa 2-position coax switches for various

Actually, if you look at the NEC (National Electrical Code), they have
factors for ambient temp and wire temp ratings. Other codes around the
world are similar.

For example, if you use AWG 12 Type UF cable, the base rating is 20 Amps.
With the temperatures we have in Arizona, where it can get above 140F in an
attic, they have a correction factor of 0.71 if the wire is rated to 90C.
So it should only be used up to 14.2 Amps. If you are installing from
scratch, I would go to AWG 10 just for a safety factor. Of course, you may
not be here in Arizona. It actually may get hotter than that here in some
attics.

You can read the NEC for free by going here and signing up. It will tell
you more than you want to know, in excruciating detail. A copy will cost
ya, but I have found the online interface good enough to find things.

Could someone please let me know the type of plug (mm) on the 12v cable?
I can't find this is the remote manual, but I know it is thicker than

Hi Eric and all,

The kh7z.net link doesn't work for me. It seems to reach the site, but then
times out trying to connect. Anyway, the message you quoted is also present
on the Facebook site. I don't like Facebook but unfortunately that seems to
be the choice of current DXpeditions.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 Fan Noise

2018-06-02 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
I would ask someone from Elecraft to respond to the VGA extension cable
question. It seems everywhere I read within Elecraft Documentation is that
standard VGA cables should NOT be used. In regards to extensions, I do not
know if they all work pin to pin, or that they are meant to just extend
standard VGA cables.

It certainly would be a way to extend the distance between the K3/K3S and
the KPA1500, but still retain the functionality between the two. When the
new firmware comes out, and the amp can be controlled by the function
buttons on the K3 (PF1-operate/stby and PF2-antenna switch), it would be a
sure winner.

Jim I agree with your personal observations. I run some high duty cycle
modes so I notice the fans kicking into speed 3 a lot when the PA temp gets
to 68-70 degrees. That setting does a good job of reducing the temp and
keeping it from climbing past 73 degrees. I've changed my min fan speed
threshold from 0 to 1 to also help. As you have pointed out 1 is barely
perceptible and this helps to reduce the amount of time that fan speeds are
on 2+.

I'd like to have more separation between the K3S and the KPA1500 RF deck to
further distance any noise but the KPAK3AUX cable is only about five feet
long, it would be great if that were more like ten feet. Since the cable
pin out is straight thru I would imagine a DB15 VGA M-F extension cable
would suffice? That would put the potential fan noise even further away but
have the RF deck still plenty close enough to view.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500 Fan Noise

2018-06-01 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
Just thought I would add a few thoughts as far as the fan noise.

I'm not certain a YouTube piece would help, but perhaps personal observations
might.

First, via the menu, you can select the minimum fan speed, 0-5. Of course, the
fan speed will go up with the Amp temperature.

These are my personal observations:

0-Nothing
1-Barely perceptible
2-Acceptable fan noise, even for SSB operating. Low pitched whine
3-The noise and the pitch of the whine is past the acceptable point. Even a
very directional mic will probably pick up the noise. This is where Noise
Cancelling headphones would start to help.
4-Louder and higher pitched whine
5-Very loud and higher pitched whine

So, the fan noise becomes particularly bothersome on level 3 and above. If you
are doing CW and/or Digital, the noise will only be a factor with the operator.
On SSB, the noise will probably be noticeable on the air. However, the SSB
duty cycle may not require higher fan speeds. Those who have been active in
contests will probably know that answer.

Rich, if fan noise is going to be that strong a factor, perhaps you should be
looking at tube amps instead. Personally, if I found the KPA-1500 fan noise
excessive in the future, I would plan on moving it off my desk or remoting it
rather than replacing it. It's integration with the K3 would be very hard to
give up.

So just a bit of thermodynamics... if the input to any amplifier is 1500 watts
and it is 50% efficient, since energy is conserved, 750 watts will come out in
another form.. and in this case it's heat. Doesn't matter what the converter
is (transistor, tube, resistor, etc.). It all behaves the same. Need to get
rid of 750 watts of heat. The only difference may be the way the heat is taken
away of the converter... convection (heat sink), forced convection (heat skin
plus fan), liquid convection (water cooled heat sink). The poison is the heat
removal device not the converter.

 Rich

You pretty much hit the nail on the head about solid state amps. As they say
there's no free lunch. Solid state has made great strides in high power
ampsbut its still solid state and a p/n junction or some form thereof. 1500
watts of heat in those junctions has to be cooled down or it won't be long
before it needsnew parts.
Depending on your operating habits (contesting, casual, or whatever) there will
be varying degrees of fan noise. The higher the duty cycle the higher thefan
requirements. Pick your poison, a small light weight amp easy to move around
or one you need a fork lift to pick up. I prefer tube amps for a few
reasonsand have the Acom 2000a (and an Alpha 89 that now sits in the living
room temporarily) but I'm still glad I got the kpa1500 at least so far.
The kpa sits nicely on top of the Acom without causing the table they sit on to
crash to the floor in pieces, hi. I'm surprised nobody has made a you tube
ofthe amp in operation actually. But there are only just over 200 of the new
amps out there. Good luck with your investigation, Rich.

Is there anyone out there that has a KPA-1500 willing to post a YouTube video

From the research I’ve done it appears that if you want a solid state amp,

Elecraft will charge the Balance to your card to total the amplifier's cost,
$5995. Those that put down full price as a deposit had free shipping (cost
approximately $95 for me).

I don't think the new orders have the same process, but as far as I know, the
introductory price still applies. I would assume they will charge for new
orders just prior to shipment. I hope someone from Elecraft will post and
give the actual process for new orders, as I do not know that for a fact.

[Elecraft] Factory Power Calibration of the KPA-1500 - question

2018-05-06 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
This may have been discussed already, but just wanted to confirm.

I had a number of questions, but I'll condense them into a few:

How are the KPA-1500 power LEDs/display calibrated at the factory, and what
equipment is used to do the calibration?

Second, in the case of using the amp with K3 and the KPAK3AUX cable, is there a
point where ALC kicks in and decreases power output?

Thank you!

[Elecraft] KPA 1500 #106

2018-04-26 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
Someone mentioned that new KPA 1500 owners were not posting to the list.

KPA-1500 Serial 106 was received today, installed and on the air! Purchased
25-Aug-2017 12:54:30 PDT by phone.

Yes, it is as awesome as we have been told. Thank you, Elecraft!

One question-the status of the KPA 1500 is listed on the K3 screen as KPA
500. Is there a way to change that now, or will that be in another K3
firmware release?

[Elecraft] Resistor and capacitor installation techniques: trim before or after soldering?

2018-03-25 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
Tony,

Thanks for the very detailed explanation. I know we are stressing the
moderators with these somewhat OT postings, but I have learned something
today.

Your note about lead in solder is very apropos. I know that NASA is not
wanting to have solder "whiskers" in any of their critical space equipment:

https://nepp.nasa.gov/Whisker/background/index.htm

I usually hunt down tin/lead solder at Hamfests. When I'm asked why I'm
risking lead exposure when soldering, I quote a line from one of our former
Presidents: "I don't inhale"!

Thanks for the great discussion!

Hi Jim,
Doug is correct about military and space work. All parts are precut or have
spacers installed prior to board mounting. Between flux, solder/flux and
mechanical means the parts are held in place until the reflow oven. For some
programs, boards are not allowed to be reworked. Some programs allow rework.
There is a very detailed procedure for reworking a board - MIL-PRF-38535 and
MIL-STD-883.

But, our applications and most commercial applications do not see the
stress, temperature range or vibration that some of these mil and space
boards see. So, for most of us bending the leads to hold the part, solder
and cut is fine. You can re-solder after cutting to be sure.

Years ago at a NASA meeting, they were told you do not need a tool meeting
MIL-STD and MIL-PRF to make a board that meets those specs. So, have the
right solder and right temp on the soldering tool and the right tip and make
a nice flowing shiny solder connection.
By the way, military space solder is not RoHS compliant. There will be lead
in the solder.

N2TK, Tony

Heathkit recommended the "bad practice" saying "solder the leads to the foil

this is insane.

Jerome,

Now this is interesting. This is totally opposite of the way most of us
were taught to solder. Among the kits I used to put together were Heathkit
and Ramsey, both of whom recommended securing the parts in place by
spreading the leads, soldering, and then cutting the wires close to the
solder blob, checking for shorts. I assume that goes for Elecraft also, but
I have not built any of their radios as kits, so not sure.

So how did NASA handle the potential difficulties? Did they have precut
parts? Did the tech have to place the part in the board and cut the leads
first? If the part was loose, how was it held close to the board, owing to
the fact that holding the solder and the iron took two hands? What if the
lead length was overestimated and potentially could cause a short? Could
the wire be cut and the joint reheated, or did the part have to be removed,
recut and reinserted?

Just trying to picture the operation.

Sorry but cutting wires after soldering is "bad practice"; NASA wanted the
soldered connection left undisturbed.

If I ever saw an assembler or tech doing that "bad practice", they'd get a
verbal warning that first time and a written warning if it ever happened
again; but I had good, conscientious people and never had to do that.

So, tin the wires if needed; position the part and then trim wires before
doing the final soldering.

Follow the instructions and solder as directed. There are components on both
sides as I recall with the majority on the top. The leads need be spread to
hold the components in place on the board. Once done soldering use a flush
cut wirecutter to remove the excess. Not a good idea to trim them before
soldering.

The picture of back of the RF deck on the KPA1500 FAQ shows a female DE-15

picture correct or just a pre-production mock-up with the wrong gender?

I ask because I'm inserting a switch box and am making the associated cables
to be able to flip back and forth between the two amps (when the KPA1500
arrives).

[Elecraft] 630 meter band open for use

2017-09-15 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
Well,

This is getting off topic for this reflector, but information is that there
have been experimental (amateur radio) stations on the (new) bands for some
time, with higher power limits than have currently been authorized for
general amateur radio use going forward. There have been no interference
reports.

The ARRL was very conservative suggesting a 1 Kilometer standard for
separation between an amateur radio station and transmission lines carrying
PLC data in regards to non-interference. The truth is, shorter distances
would still likely not produce interference. The FCC did adopt the 1
kilometer distance as a standard, however.

'73 de JIM N2ZZ

Aha! So PLC and amateur radio DO interfere with each other after all.

In the end, amateur radio operators have been vindicated on this point.

[Elecraft] Norton and P3 Utility

2017-07-04 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
The answer is yes. Norton does flag that file as a threat, and once you
download it and attempt to install the .exe file, your computer will say that
it cannot be found, and you will see Norton giving you a notice in the lower
right of your screen, saying that it is analyzing the file. It then turns from
yellow to red, with a big "X" saying that the file was deleted and the threat
is resolved.

This is where we all blurt out a colorful metaphor.

It is at this point that trust is involved, that is, that Elecraft would not
put a malware file on their server. I think we can all feel safe here!

In the box in the lower right of your screen that I mentioned above, there is a
link that says "details". Click on this.

In the next box, the details of the threat are listed, and there are links at
the bottom of the box. Click on "Restore" or "Restore File".

You are then asked if you are sure that you wish to restore the threat, and
that you want Norton to ignore that file in the future. Click on "yes".

The file will be restored, then double click on it and install the P3 utility.
Norton will then leave it alone.

Norton has become a bit more aggressive over the last several years. I really
cannot say that is a bad thing. I'd rather deal with the hassle above than
deal with a virus that trashes my computer and files. YMMV.

I'm not certain if there is anything that a developer can do to prevent Norton
or other anti-virus programs from attacking their files, whether it is a
digital signature, or something else. None of Elecraft's other utilities are
considered a threat by Norton in my experience.

[Elecraft] KPA-1500: Gain Mod when FCC Lifts 15db Rule

2017-04-21 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
Kevin,

The current FCC rules for certificating a linear amplifier in the US (in
order for a manufacturer to sell them in the US) is described in Part 97:
http://www.arrl.org/part-97-text . Go down to 97.315 and 97.317. The 15 dB
rule is 97.317 (2). The history of this rule comes from preventing the use
of amateur radio amplifiers to be used in the class D Citizens Radio
Service.

Prior to the rule change in 2006, amps could not be sold in the US that
would amplify frequencies between 24-30 MHz. The individual ham would have
to do the modification themselves (or have someone do it for them), and
could only receive this modification information if they could prove that
they had a valid FCC Amateur Radio license. For example, my Alpha had a
numerical code sequence tied to the serial number that was given to me after
proof of licensure, one of my MFJ mobile amps had a modification kit, and
another required wiring changes. So, two conditions had to be met - no
amplification above 24 MHz, and the amp could not have a gain of more than
15 dB. Again, this prevented, or attempted to prevent, those in the Class D
Citizens radio service from amplifying their 5 watt transceivers to the full
amateur radio legal limit.

Blocking 24-30 MHz from amplification was a bit of a hardship and an
unnecessary rule for the amateur radio service. To simplify, the FCC
instituted a rule change in 2006, ruling that amateur radio amplifiers just
must have zero gain from 26-28 MHz. However, the FCC did not remove the 15
dB rule at the time of that rule change, which most agree is also totally
unnecessary.

Expert Linears and the ARRL have both petitioned the FCC to remove the 15 dB
rule. These petitions are still currently pending FCC review and action.

Should the FCC delete the 15 dB rule, amplifier manufacturers will be able
to build amps that will only require QRP power to obtain full legal limit
power, and be able to obtain FCC type certification to sell them in the US.
The question posed was whether Elecraft will offer a modification program, a
kit or modification instructions should the 15 dB rule be deleted. The
answer, of course, was TBD.

For Elecraft, this means a KX3 or a KX2 could be amplified to full legal
limit.

So, this is the history as I know it. I'm sure if I have anything wrong,
There will be more reply posts on this subject than Wayne received after his
KPA1500 announcement last evening!

I sent this a little earlier today:

Oliver,

I have Windows 7, so hopefully this will apply to your OS.

Go to the lower right of your screen. If you have the standard
configuration, there will be a system tray. Left click on the "up arrow" to
bring up the hidden icons. Right click on the Norton Icon, which is a
yellow check mark with a green one within. Click on "Disable Auto Protect".
It will give you a protection warning pop-up, and lets you select the
duration of disabling the Auto Protect. 15 minutes is generally enough
time. Download the file, and install as usual.

Norton is a bit aggressive these days.

Well,

I have seen a lot of Norton-bashing, but not one single helpful suggestion.

Here goes.

Oliver,

Norton, as well as many other anti-malware programs use different techniques
to try to protect you. Some are known anti-virus definitions, or heuristic
analysis, or looking to see how many other users of their software have
downloaded the particular file you are downloading.

Norton will err on the side of caution, and quarantine a file if it does not
have a known "reputation" as safe.

When you try to open the file, you will get a small warning box in the
bottom right of the screen that says it has been removed by Norton.

Click on "View Details" within this box. This will bring up another window
that shows that it has been quarantined. Within this box, you will see a
button that says "More Options"- From here, you can tell Norton to Restore
the file. It will then be flagged as OK, and this action will be submitted
to Norton. This helps them keep their Reputation checks updated.

You can also open Norton directly, and click on "History". In the list that
appears, you should see where the file was quarantined. You can also restore
it by clicking on that entry in the log.

I hope this helps.

I would assume that the SPE amps all integrate with the K3 in a similar

hummed along all weekend.

I think that the ship has sailed with respect to Elecraft bringing a legal
limit SS amp to market.

There are a growing number of lightweight legal limit amps already on the
market. The FlexRadio Power Genius looks especially promising:
http://www.flexradio.com/amateur-products/powergenius-xl/

It only weighs 33 pounds. I saw it in operation at the Orlando HamCation and
it looked very impressive operating all weekend into a dummy load at a
conservative 1.5 kw output.

SPE also just announced a 1.5 kw amp..something I'm surprised they did given
that they already have a 1 kw, 1.3 kw, and a 2kw amp on the market. I know of
several people that have the 1 kw amp and use it with their K3 radios and they
love them. I've used the big SPE amp in CQWW CW and it worked flawlessly all
weekend without a hiccup.

Is there a way to determine the prices of parts available from Elecraft and
then to order them? I am aware of the ³Parts and Mod Kits² page, but that
doesn¹t begin to list everything. For example - and there are many other
examples - I need to buy a couple of DB9 backshells. Simple, yes?
To my dismay, the Radio Shack stores across the 100 mile stretch between my
city home and my operating QTH don¹t carry them any more. I can find them
at other sellers online but the handling and delivery charges for quantities
under 1,000 are severe. Ham Radio Outlet doesn¹t carry much by way of DIY
parts either. In this case I just ordered them from Elecraft as an add-on
to a kit order, without knowing the cost. Maybe Elecraft doesn¹t want to be
in the small parts business, and that would be a sensible business judgment.
But there are lots of parts used in their kits for which some klutz who
stepped on one would like to buy a replacement. So, is there a way to
access a parts price list without bothering Richard every time . . . ?

[Elecraft] Logging Programs

2016-02-27 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
Terry,

I use a freeware program called Logger32: www.logger32.net . I became
aware of the program as someone close to me did tech support prior to
becoming an SK. It does have a healthy yahoogroup for questions. They make
no bones about it NOT being a contest software program. Otherwise, it does
virtually everything a logging software needs to do.

For contesting, I use the W3FJP software, as it is easy to use. My goal is
to learn N1MM, as that is what I believe to be the de facto contest program.
I then export the contest log as an ADIF file, and import it into logger 32
which has my main log. Both will do Cabrillo format which is the format in
which contest files are generally submitted.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 integration with SPE Expert 2K-FA

2015-12-23 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
Bill,

I do have the same setup that you have (K-Line), but have been looking at
the Expert amps. The user manuals
http://www.expertlinears.com/products.html do have the information to wire a
cable to interface the K3(S) with the amp. They apparently have someone
that will wire a cable up for you, as noted on their home page. It seems
like a very simple build, though.

Here is a YouTube video I found interfacing the 1.3K-FA with the K3S and a
computer. Interesting that you need to select "Kenwood" in order for the
amp to read the correct frequency from the K3S:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rEKUbMuVKc However, they may have updated
the amplifier firmware since this video.

I saw the last post on SO2R, with the requirement of a receive only antenna.
That seems a bit problematic.

I have noted a similar Cracking in the speaker when listing to AM broadcast
station KFI (640 KHz). At first I assumed it was just overload as I was
using a 160 meter dipole and the signal strength meter was maxed: however
moving to steppir antenna tuned to 40 meters gave the same result with and
smeter reading of only S9.

I have a local AM station on 1450 KHz that produces a -10 dBm into a
spectrum analyzer and -30 dBm on the P3. I had assumed from this, without
making any further checks, that the receiver was just overloaded.

The cracking sound does not sound like any dynamic range problem I have
heard before but I have not taken the time to make any serious tests.

I make these comments because I am not convinced this is any form of
overload and wonder if it could be related to your problem.

[Elecraft] Microphone Setup

2015-11-04 Thread James F. Boehner, MD via Elecraft
Don,

Thanks to you, Richard, Gene, Charlie, Bob and Mitch for your constructive
and educational responses on this topic.

Don, I am happy to say that the settings you mention below were the ones
that I settled on after some experimentation prior to my post. I appreciate
the validation and the background on the reasons why those settings are the
desired ones.

Not all information is in the manual, certainly not specifics. The
collective experience on this list is greatly appreciated, especially from
those of us that are new to the Elecraft line.

Thanks again!

Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Microphone Setup

Dr. Jim,

There is no FAQ that I am aware of.
Actually the information is pretty basic. Microphone elements come in two
basic types - Electret and Dynamic.
The Electret types need a DC bias applied to the AF line.
The Dynamic elements should *not* have bias applied or they will be
distorted.

The other thing that often causes confusion is the mic plug pinout. The mic
plug wiring must match the pin arrangement used in the transceiver, and that
information is shown in the transceiver manual. In the case of the Elecraft
K3 and K3S, the 8 pin mic pinout differs only from that used by Kenwood in
that the use of pins 5 and 6 are reversed. Since most Kenwood unamplified
dynamic microphones do not use pins 5 and 6, most all Kenwood dynamic
microphones will work directly with the K3 and K3S.

Heil microphones normally use a 4 pin XLR as a generalized connector
*and* use an adapter or special cable to change that XLR connection to that
required for the transceiver. The adapter to be used with the K3 and K3S is
the one for the Kenwood (which has a red band).

Heil microphones come in both the dynamic and the electret types, although
most are dynamic. If the microphone is designated with a "-iC"
or "-K2" it is an electret type.

A lot of information on microphones and transceiver connections can be found
at http://homepage.ntlworld.com/rg4wpw/date.html. G4WPW has done an
excellent job of collecting information about microphones, mic pinouts and
even schematics.

In your particular case with the Heil PR-781, use the Kenwood cable (Heil
CC-1XLR-K) with that microphone and make certain the bias is turned off.
I believe that microphone has a rather low output, so you may have to use
the high range for the mic gain.
So - the K3(S) MIC SEL menu should be set to "FP H".
Set the mic gain as described in the K3 manual - first set compression to
zero, then adjust the MIC GAIN until you see 5 to 7 bars illuminated on the
ALC meter (that can be done in TX TEST so no RF is produced).
Then bring the compression up to your tastes, usually in the 3 to 6 dB
range.

73,
Don W3FPR

David sent me the K3-K3S Remote FAQ which has a lot of good information on

[Elecraft] K3/0 Forum?

2015-10-11 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
To All,

I know the main advantage of having one central list (this one) is that it is
monitored by Elecraft, and answers are provided by them, as well as other
knowledgeable individuals on the forum.

I have moderated the elecraft...@yahoogroups.com for some time (Waaay before
having a K3), and fortunately, Elecraft monitors that list as well.

Since there appears to be a need, I have created elecraft_k...@yahoogroups.com
for anyone who would like to have a separate forum. I would certainly welcome
Elecraft to participate, as well as RemoteRig and Remote hams.

I want to make it clear that I do not want to divide this forum, just provide a
space where those who have a particular interest in Remote operating can gather.

I am currently borrowing a K3/0 in anticipation of one I have on order, and
purchased RemoteRig when I purchased my K3. All I can say is that it was
indeed fortunate that I had someone who has set up a number of remote stations
with RemoteRig to guide me through the process. It is not "a walk in the park"
for someone who has not done it before. Hopefully this new forum can help.

David from Elecraft did send me a separate communication dated June 2015 (K3
and K3S Remote System FAQ) on remote operating, and I've found it very helpful.

If anyone cares to join the list, elecraft_k3-0-subscr...@yahoogroups.com
should do it, but going to http://groups.yahoo.com and searching for
Elecraft_K3-0 would be best. It will be moderated. Please place your callsign
in the "why you want to join this group" for quick approval.

The lack of a good manual and no diagram for the K3/0 is way..below the

you sometimes want to use the USB cable and remote hams.
There just is no documentation as to what is going on!

[Elecraft] I wonder how many folks have had buyer's remorse on a K3/K3S purchase?

2015-08-03 Thread James F. Boehner MD via Elecraft
My only remorse was deciding to buy a loaded K3 two months before the K3S
came out...

But, such is life.

The true advantage is that Elecraft keeps their current users in mind when
they design new equipment. Upgrades are indeed possible for older units.

I say that as I bid my K3 farewell on its 5 week voyage (1 week each way,
with approximately 3 wks of turn-around time) to the left coast for
upgrades.

I was asked about 10 years ago to moderate the Elecraft_K3 list, even though
I didn't own one. So, I've at least been a part of the community for some
time. I finally decided to become a participant-but my timing was two
months off :-( !

During that time, I have never seen a company that is not only USA based,
but has customer service that is better than I've seen anywhere. That, and
the desire to keep their radio on the top of the heap while respecting their
longtime customers by offering upgrades.

Elecraft deserves our business!

Jerry,

I don't regret for one minute any of my Elecraft purchases. I bought my
K3/P3 used several years ago, then added the KAT500 and KPA500 later as
resources allowed. I also had a W2 wattmeter for several years, which I sold
after it became extraneous to my needs. I also use the T1 QRP tuner with my

I've been very happy with all the Elecraft gear I own.
