I have a recent factory assembled serial number #621 LP Pan for sale. The
box and Power SDR (point and click) software works great but I am not using
it as much as I thought I would. LP Pan is $180.00 shipped in the US. If
any one is interested I also have a Personus Firebox for sale that is a
great companion to the LP Pan if you need a high end sound card. Price on
this is $175.00 shipped. Both items have original boxes. Contact me off

Lisa,

I received the K3 - Thanks.

I did not receive the 400hz filter. Is this backordered? When can I
expect it?

[Elecraft] 274 is QRV

2008-01-26 Thread Jay Schwisow
Well#274 ordered May 10th is built and on the air. A friend of mine
and I built it in just under 4 hours. It was quite the assembly line!

I have to say that I was impressed with the kit. Everything was
included and it went together perfectly. Form and fit was fantastic!
The instruction manual is VERY well written and includes some of those
"watch out" type comments that tend to be missing in other technical
manuals. Operationally, it is everything I expected it to be.

For all of you that are waiting for the rig -it is worth the wait.

I saw a note from Lyle that indicated that the TX audio passband was

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Glitch on Field Day

2007-06-27 Thread Jay Schwisow

Larry,

Seems strange that this came up after your rig was sitting but I will
tell you about my experiences with a toasty PA

I have not ever seen the message PA Hot but I certainly have noticed the
PA getting hot and in a couple of instances cause the rig to shut
down/reboot. I operate alot of CW during contests and am constantly
cqing and working stations. I have a simple cure. Using just a touch
of double back tape I mounted a DC muffin fan on top of the PA (blowing
air on to the PA). Instead of wiring it directly to the K2 I just put
it on a powerpole strip.

We had a 100 degree field day this year and the rig ran flawlessly. All
indications are that the this is cured on the K3. It will have 2 nice
size variable fans.

I've seen a couple of posts about folks having some interesting

After operating most of Saturday afternoon, I turned off my K2/100
around 6 to break for supper. Since my wife had invited her brothers and
sisters for a picnic, it was around 8 when I turned my radio on again.
When I transmitted to answer a CQ FD, I saw the display show "PA HOT"
and no apparent output power. I cycled the radio off and on again, but
got the same message when I tried to transmit. The correct antenna input
was selected, but the KAT100 wouldn't tune. When I pressed the Tune
button it just displayed 20 and 1:1. I tried both CW and SSB with the
same result. I tried switching from 20 m to 40 m with the same result. I
turned off the radio again and went to visit with my cousin and her
husband for another hour or so. When I came back, I even tried
connecting my ac power supply to see if the battery voltage was dropping
too low for some reason. The PA HOT message came on each time I tried to
transmit. Finally I tried reducing power to below 10 W. Now the tuner
would work, and I could transmit, but going above 10 W gave the PA HOT
message again. I finally brought the radio and tuner inside for the
night and gave up.

Sunday morning I set the radio up again, and this time everything was
fine. No problems, full power, CW and SSB, everything worked fine for
the rest of Field Day!

Any ideas on what may have been going on? There were no storms, the air
was dry, the temperature was a bit cool, dropping into the low 60s. For
anyone who worked WB3IOS 1B EPA, thanks for the contact!

[Elecraft] Disconnecting, grounding, lightning, etc..

2007-07-30 Thread Jay Schwisow
Here is an eham posting from a friend and RF engineer with Sprint - Mike
Higgins K6AER. Mike has helped me with my station and taught classes to
many. There is lots more to protecting your house, family and belongings
than just disconnecting coax...read on.

From Mike Higgins on Eham 3/2006:

Well it is that time of the year when postings turn to grounding and
lighting protection.

So much information has been posted on lightning protection in this
fourm you could spend hours going through all the information listed and
I would recommend doing so. Use the search engine in eHam and by all
means forget the naysayers of grounding. Go to the PolyPhaser site and
read their tutorials on lightning protection. Go to Lyncole, Hagar and
ICE (Industrial Communications Engineers) and read their tutorials on
grounding. There is no short cut to lighting protection. Your whole
station and home needs to be addressed as a complete solution. Now if
you live in the Northwest you can skip the rest of this article for your
chances are very slim you would even see a thunderstorm. For the rest of
the county this is an aspect of the hobby we have to deal with. This
article is a reader's digest version of what must be done for surge
protection and I hope it start you thinking about your home and station.

Every other year on average my station gets hit by lightning. This was
not a problem when I lived in LA; I had a greater chance of being hit by
stray bullets. I live in a very high lightning prone area called the
Palmer divide in Colorado. June through August we have thunder storms
every day with up to 40,000 strikes a day on average during those
months. I am on my 3rd GP-9 antenna at the top of the tower. When a
storm has gone by and I find what's left of a GP-9 in toasted shards all
over the ranch, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to know what
happened. I have lost no base station equipment to a lightning strikes
but I have spent considerable time putting in proper grounding and surge
protection on my station. As for the tower top fiberglass omni sticks,
they're sacrificial and that just the cost of doing business where I live.

Proper grounding and surge protection works and works very well. The key
is setting up low resistance grounding and the proper installation of
grounding material. Disconnecting you equipment and putting it into a
Faraday Shield box will work well but if you live in an area like my QTH
you would be off the air for 3-4 months every year. Some hams like my
self have more than one radio and going this route would mean my hobby
is station assembly. I can't speak for most hams but after doing that a
few times it looses its novelty.

The cell phone industry looses less then 20 sites a year to lightning.
There are approximately 500,000 sites between Verizon, Nextel, Cingular,
Sprint and others. Generally it is because the DSL line is struck and
not the radio equipment. In the cell phone industry we ground at the top
of the tower, base of the tower and where the cable goes into the
facility. The facility has a ground halo inside and the all equipment is
grounded to NEC code. Surge protectors are connected for all incoming
and outgoing lines at the ground demarcation point. Site ground
resistance is generally below 3 ohms. Four 20 foot deep ground rods is a
grounding minimum. The AC entry panel has surge protectors (95% of all
lightning damage comes in through the AC panel) and most importantly all
the facility grounding is bonded together.

Power lines take by far the greatest hits and the pole flash-over-rods
pass any surges below 10,000 volts. That still leaves a lot voltage
coming down the power line. The primary and secondary portion of the
pole transformer can arc over and your home is next in line. Your home
AC panel should have a surge protectors connected to the panel. You
worry about your ham equipment but what about your expensive
entertainment and appliances not to mention the possibility of fire. You
can protect your home and panel for under $100. Intermatic makes the
Panel Gard model number IG1240RC surge protector for $60 not including
the two additional circuit breakers. This unit has LED's to indicate the
units status and wither you have taken a power surge. Installation is
just three wires into the panel.

Did I mention lightning rods for the roof? Lightning is fickle and might
miss your gorgeous tower and strike through the roof to the electrical
wiring in the ceiling. The ground return in your home wiring connects to
the master ground in your AC panel. Remember a lighting discharge is
looking for the lowest impedance path to ground, i.e. earth. If your
live in a highly lightning prone areas like Colorado, Florida and much
of the mid west, lighting rods are a good investment. National Lightning
Protection in Denver makes all the necessary material to install your
lightning rod system. Their web site is a wealth of informat

[Elecraft] Cw warble transmit and receive K2

2006-04-09 Thread Jay Schwisow

Good evening all,

I have my K2 (no. 5037) for a number of months and it has been working
great. However, after a month of non-use I now have a warble on both CW
receive and transmit carrier. I have this on both 40m and 20m and have not
checked other bands.

A friend of mine and I have gone through the rig and do not see any obvious
solder or component problems.

Using a oscilloscope at R30 we found .7v dc and 20 mv peak to peak 80-100hz
AC.

Could this be a problem with U4 or U5? Any ideas where I should be looking
?

Thanks,

Re: [Elecraft] QSL cards + A Question

2006-06-05 Thread Jay Schwisow

Tom,

It is ok to send cards and expect a reply. The class contesters will
return a QSL. It may take a few weeks to a month or so but your
response rate should be high. Yes - there are a few that will not
respond but this is also true of the rest of ham population.

eqsl and LOTW are both great. However, it is unfortunate that the ARRL
will not recognize eqsl for its awards. CQ Magazine, Japan and some of
the other foreign countries should be fine with eqsl. In addition, eqsl
has some of its own rewards.

Welcome back from being inactive and happy Qsling.

In the past, exchanging QSL cards was considered part of the hobby - sort of
a polite way to "end" the QSO. I know representative costs are probably the
same now as they were "then", but in terms of actual dollars an active ham
could spend a whole bunch of money on paper.

Is it "OK" to send QSL cards (and expect a reply) to stations we work in
contests? Seems like that would be a huge expense for the contester - given
the cost of the QSL and current postage rates.

How about this eQSL thing, is it a worthwhile venture? LoTW? Do contesters
usually post their logs on these services? eQSL and LoTW seem kinda
sterile, but are they accepted as part of our computer-world?

I highly recommend a Begali paddle as seen as www.i2rtf.com. This is

Stephen W. Kercel wrote:

Jeff:

It is a perfectly reasonable topic, and one I've been wondering about
myself.

Since Thanksgiving, we've had astoundingly bad conditions with lots of
flares and storms.

There are three mechanisms of disruption indicated on the NOAA Web
site, radio blackouts due to X-rays which are mostly felt on the
sunlit side of the Earth and dissipate in a matter of hours, "solar
storms" which are bursts of heavy particles (protons, as I recall),
and the solar wind (a stream of electrons).

As I understand the numbers, K is a "near real time" (reported every 3
hours) indication of disruption of propagation due to the geomagnetic
fluctuations caused by fluctuations in the solar wind. With each value
of K there is an associated value of a, with a pseudo logarithmic
relationship between K and a, such that k=1 => a=3, and k=9 => a=400.
A is the average of the last 8 a values, and thus is an indication of
the cumulative effect of the solar wind on the geomagnetic field over
the past 24 hours.

It is important to realize that A and K are statistical measures that
correctly describe propagation most of the time, but not always.

A=9 is not low. It is usually an indication of "marginal but somewhat
useful" conditions.

My guess is that when the atmosphere takes a series of severe hits, as
has happened over the past week, it takes much more than 24 hours
(suggested by formula for the A index) for the atmosphere to "heal"
itself, irrespective of the low A and K values currently being reported.

It is my observation over recent months that once we've had a
geomagnetic storm it requires two continuous days of both K and A <= 2
before one sees the return of good conditions.

The problem is aggravated by the low sunspot numbers, and consequent
low MUFs. I've noticed that most nights lately from New England, one
hears practically nothing from Europe on 40 m (although one can hear
Caribbean stations running European pileups). The reason is that the
MUF between NE and EU most nights is about 6 MHz. 40 is dead but 80
(in between storms) can be very lively.

Anyway, given the low MUFs, most HF bands are dead much of the time,
and 80 is only usable when the noise (partly induced by geomagnetic
activity) dies down.

I'd be curious what other list members know about this.

The features of the K3 and the approach that Elecraft is using to bring
this to market (input from dxers, contestors, field testers, pre-built

Right now at sunspot minimum I would say 20or 17meters. 40m at night
but operating split. 80m and 160m follow if antennas allow. Once the

meters.

Have a look at the SSB dx contests. October is one of the busiest
months of the year. The big one is CQWW DX 10/27 (all weekend).
Contest weekends tend to open up the bands when they seem closed. He
could probably earn DXCC in one weekend of CQWW. If his station is
modest encourage him to wait until Sunday to work the more exotic DX.
The pileups will be down and it will be easier for him to get through -
assuming propagation.

One more note...small antennas including a simple dipole at 20feet can
and will work. If this is all Bob can put up then fine. Sure I
recommend a big yagi but for many this cannot be done.Note that in
many cases the guy on the other end will do the heavy lifting..

Here is a complete calendar of contests:

2007-10-06 Thread Jay Schwisow

Any news regarding Writelog?

Jay - KT5E

I have full faith in John's abilities however.

I'm hoping to try N1MM Logger a bit later today in the Cal QSO Party
and then again next weekend in another 'activity' as well. Will report
if I find ANY show stoppers.

Re: [Elecraft] Improving the station while waiting for the K3

2007-11-25 Thread Jay Schwisow

Josh,

There has been basic shack reorganization and I am staying involved in
the contests with the K2. However, my big project was the construction
of a 3 element 30 meter beam on a 34 foot boom. I used parts
acquired from an estate and modeled it with Yagi W. I just finished
the testing today (at 40 feet) and the mono bander is 1.3 to 1 or less
in the band. A friend of mine and I nick named it the "droopy 30"
since the 600" reflector droops about 4 feet from center.

Next step is to complete the tower for this one. This project, the 160m
and 10m contest still in play while waiting for the K3.

Hello all,

While waiting for my K3, I am making general improvements to my station. I am
in the process of building 20m and 6m Yagis and getting them installed. I'm
also working on getting a functional 160m vertical on the air. Also checking
out the other antennas before winter sets in too hard ( might be too late in
some areas) and getting the shack a little cleaned up. A KRC2 is on the way to
handle switching the antennas with some real nice coaxial relays from Motorola
MTR2000 stations.
Anyone else making improvements and preparations for the arrival of their K3 so
it has the best conditions in which to live?

Re: [Elecraft] Heil mic question

2007-11-26 Thread Jay Schwisow
Is there any difference between the K2 proset and the regular Heil
proset (with either the HC4 or HC5)?

I have 2 Heil Prosets, the Elecraft version and the ICOM/Yaesu /5 version.
Later today I'll check them side by side for comparison on the K3. I can make
both work equally well on the K-2 using the UN-PCB Universal Mic Interface to
switch the bias in or out.

I use the Heil/Elecraft Proset mono(mic) and stereo(headphones) 3.5mm jacks
on back and I can switch the speaker in or out at will with or without the
headset turned on.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Temp/Fan

2007-12-12 Thread Jay Schwisow

Jim,

I run alot of CW contests and with constant CQing/exchanges you could
fry an egg on the heatsink. The existing cooling cannot keep up with
the heat generated. It looks a bit Frankenstein but I mounted (with
double back tape) a 12 volt 2.5" muffin fan on top of the heat sink. It
runs cool as a cucumber now. This is now standard operating procedure
for contests I run at 100w.

Jim Stoneback wrote:
I searched the archives and didn't find anything on this, but from
what I've read, I think I may have a problem with my KPA100. When
operating CW the fan turns on high during every transmission and the
heat sink gets hot to the touch. I'm a ragchewer so my transmissions
do run to several minutes and, regardless of power setting, the fan
will kick on high after several minutes of transmitting. Fan is set
to 'nor'. Sending speed ranges from 15-20 wpm. Ambient temperature
in the shack is around 74F. The fan has never kicked up to high when
on SSB but I don't operate fone much, and generally don't talk for
very long when I do. The K2/100 (recent build, sn 6194, KPA100
Version F1.10) operates well in all other respects. Does anyone have
an idea what may be wrong?

Bose has the Bose Aviation-X - $995.00

I always use my Bose noise cancelling cans for CW operating but I am
not sure I want to shell out $995.00 to get the microphone too!

Just try and work multi-2 SSB using Heil with the other OP less than 6
feet away "shouting", "NEGATIVE my call is delta delta five foxtrot
zulu denmark denmark one two three four five florida zanzibar ..." I
find it almost impossible. Most of the serious contesters here in
southern and eastern Bavaria use passive suppression pilot headsets,
so I'm not the only one who prefers them. I can see that the pressure
on the ears might be a reason not to want to use this kind of headset.
They are a fairly tight fit, but I still prefer them to every Heil
Headset I have come across, because of the 25dB suppression. I would
not call them a vise though.

PS: Panzerkopfhörer (e.g. for camera operators at rock concerts) are
much less comfortable but have even more passive suppression of the
surroundings. They are also very heavy.
