Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 -Second floor- no RF ground ??
Chuck, I operate a K3/100 from a 2nd story shack and have significant RF ground problems. I do have a good powerline ground, but that is irrelevant. My antenna is a 100 ft sloper, centerfed with over 100 ft of 450 ohm window line (perpendicular to the antenna for 75 ft). It will "load up" on all bands 160M through 6M, with varying degrees of effectiveness. I cannot run my amplifier (Alpha 78) at more than 200-300 watts on most bands without significant RF problems, including tripping GFIs. I intend to try to alleviate the problems with a tuned ground, using a series-tuned resonant circuit in a counterpoise system hanging out the window, an arrangement similar to the MFJ 931. (If you look inside one of those, you will see that it is very cheaply made. You can do much better with your own coil, capacitor, and RF ammeter.) By the way, I can operate the K3/100 barefoot without apparent adverse effects due to the bad RF grounding. Another issue only distantly related to grounding is that the K3, like the K2, is extremely susceptible to ESD strikes. That is a huge problem for me in the dry, high desert of Nevada. You cannot touch anything here without drawing a significant spark, any time of year. I quickly caused expensive major damage (destruction of firmware, etc) to my K2/100 by touching it, even though it was carefully grounded to power system ground. The K3 is upset by such strikes also. I try to avoid damage by using an operating table with conductive paint (Walmart) and a good (DC) ground system, so that I can continuously discharge myself before and while operating. The reason for the ESD susceptibility of the K3 and K2 is flawed shielding design and (apparently) lack of ESD mitigation in the circuitry/layout. Hello guys, I'm planning on purchasing a K3/100 but am concerned about my second floor shack and RF problems. First of all: 1) I don't have an RF ground (don't really want to drill thru the house and siding for the ground strap) and 2) my antenna is a semi-indoor/attic dipole (HOA). I'm running a coax from the second floor radio to the attic where i attach to a dipole (no balun) and the dipole runs the length of the house each way and out the eaves where both wires run out about 35 yards to the trees. I'm using my K2/15 and don't have problems but previously with my old Knwd TS 830 at about 100 watts the vibroplex bug would 'bite' me. I'd also get some RFI on the TV (didn't try any filters to prevent it). I know both of the above arrangements are potential sources for RF problems. What I don't know is whether RF problems (both the 'burn' and RFI) are radio related; i.e. are some radios more prone cause issues and how is the K3/100 in this regard as compared to the TS 830? (this may be a non-question-- i just don't have enough experience with different radios to know). So I'm wonder if any of you operate a K3/100 from a second floor shack, with no RF ground, (guess it's too much to ask about a semi-indoor antenna) and if you're experiencing RF problems? Also, if I experience RF problems with the K3 do any you have any experience with an "Artificial RF Ground" such as the MFJ-931? Sorry about being long winded. Hope I'm not 'destined' to order a K3/10 instead. thanks again. chuck af4xk -- View this message in context: http://n2.nabble.com/K3-100-Second-floor-no-RF-ground-tp4628979p4628979.html Sent from the [K3] mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3/100 -Second floor- no RF ground ??
Steve, I have tried the "barefoot" approach here, nothing seems to work. One draws sparks in our rooms with wood flooring also. NV is an extreme environment! I have had "RF ground" problems here while using various antennas, some fed with coax, some with balanced feed, baluns, etc. One problem, of course, is having the rig connected to the power line ground, which is on the opposite side of the house, and you know how big the ground leads are that are run through the house. RF pickup on the ground system is substantial. Jerry AI6L -Original Message- From: Steve Ellington [mailto:n...@carolina.rr.com] Sent: Thursday, February 25, 2010 11:46 AM To: Jerry T. Socks are not allowed! This also lets you run "barefoot" while running the amp. Replacing carpet with wood flooring helps too but a bit more expensive. Your RFI problems sound like common mode current on your feeder. I would try changing the length. My final solution here was to put the MFJ-998 1.5kw auto tuner out at the antenna "130' inverted L" and run coax into the house. [Elecraft] [K3] Filter prices
The high prices of the roofing filters for the K3 and optional filters for other rigs reminds me of a little history. In the very early '80s, I desired to purchase a CW filter for an Astro 200, long after CIR went out of business. I happened to be visiting Phoenix, AZ for a few days, so I dropped by Network Sciences, the company that had made the Astro filters and had also been the filter supplier for Drake, Atlas and other manufacturers. It was still there, but obviously about to fold. I met with Howard Falk, the owner, who said he could supply me with an 8-pole CW filter for the Astro. We chatted a bit while a technician, apparently the only other person around, checked out my filter. Howard said that he had essentially been driven out of business by the Japanese filter manufacturers. Drake and others had switched to Japanese suppliers since they could get the filters for a little over $1 each, whereas his cost was over $2 each. Note that there were no middlemen. Drake was selling their filters for $40 or $50 each, I forget which. A tidy profit. Howard charged me $40 for that CW filter, by the way. Since Howard's tale was only one data point for me, it would be interesting to verify it through other sources. Inflation since that time has been about a factor of 2.6, according to official US Government figures: http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl Some of us would disagree with the official numbers, putting it closer to a factor of 10, but the official factor is close to the actual increase in retail prices for the filters. If the costs have gone up in that proportion, the profits are huge. Especially if one figures in the interim advances in manufacturing, such as monolithic structures, etc. Of course, there is at least one middleman involved with the Inrad filters, increasing the cost to Elecraft. No doubt high markups are necessary along the line somewhere because of the low volumes involved. Nevertheless, I find it especially disturbing having to pay these modern prices considering that the filters have apparently not been designed or chosen for good IMD performance or advantageous group delay characteristics. Also, some filters are reputed to have been defective. Of course, the filters may not be totally to blame for the mediocre front end performance of the K3 (compared with the professional-level performance that some of us had hoped for.) RE: [Elecraft] ESD Damage Question
I suspect that the K3 does not have any design features for minimizing susceptibility to ESD. The K2 apparently does not. When I moved to NV from CA I had a rude awakening. The humidity here is low, often in single digits. I always draw sparks to every piece of metal, e.g., light switch plate screws. I found that the K2 would go into hyperspace and require an off/on reset whenever I reached for it and drew a spark to the case. One day I sparked to the case containing the KPA100 and KAT100 and the amp stopped working properly. The firmware probably got zapped. I restored function by putting in a new firmware chip and bringing all the mods up to date. Since then, I have grounded everything to power ground and have an operating table with conducting paint (Walmart). It is now easy for me to keep discharged to the table. Nonetheless, the K2 still burps if I happen to spark to the case, even though it is well grounded. My K3 was set up with great care and attention to grounding, but I expect that it may also respond to case discharges. I sure am going to try to avoid testing that surmise! [Elecraft] K3 Mojo
I am happy to report that the K3 is not lacking in the traditional mojo. My first QSO with the K3 was TX5C, followed by working them all bands 160M through 15M CW and SSB, excepting 160M SSB and 40M SSB. This was barefoot with one antenna, a dipole at 15 ft. For 160, I had to load just the center conductor of the coax, disconnecting the shield. The mojo approaches that of the K2/100, with which I worked VP6DX CW and SSB 160M-15M excepting 160 SSB. It took much less time with the K2, but that may have been due to different operating procedures between the two DXpeditions. My first RTTY QSO with the K3, by the way, was with VK9NS on 17M. For that I used MTTY with the AFSK A mode. It is interesting to note that the K3 itself seemed to do a better job decoding than MTTY. Perhaps the difference would disappear with optimum setup. [Elecraft] K3: Output power on PSK31 and AFSK
I am running beta 2.63/1.95 firmware. This is the case whether I use LINE IN or FP/RP MIC connections for the input. It seems to me that I was able to comfortably get at least 50W out in these modes when I first tried them several months ago, although I am not sure of that. Thanks to everyone for the information on setting up the K3 for digital modes. My low power problem was solved by running TX gain calibration and by setting the LINE IN gain for a couple of bars on the ALC indicator. Re: [Elecraft] EMP radio
Oh yes! Most critical military equipment is designed to minimize the effects of EMP and nuclear radiation. I spent several years of my career determining susceptibilities and designing circumventions. It is not difficult. One good solar emp and only the old timers will be on the air with their tube rigs. Wonder if the military thinks about these things. I received shipping confirmation for my kit yesterday. Have patience! I really wish Elecraft would give a realistic ship date instead of stringing us along. Elecraft is a small company -- they are my neighbors, including some of their employees. They have always had the top priority of doing it right. From what I can see by watching this reflector, they're currently making sure that the building instructions make sense by having a few folks close to them build a kit from the instructions and re-writing as needed. I'm waiting for a kit, and I'm happy to know that it will be "right" when I get it. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I ordered about 2 hours after the window opened online also. No tracking number was given with my confirmation, and my debit card has not been billed, so perhaps the fat lady has not sung yet! [Elecraft] KPA500 kits
Just found out that my kit has not shipped. False alarm. I added an item to the order and was sent a copy of the revised invoice, which showed a shipping date of yesterday. Indeed, no kits have shipped yet. Sorry for raising false hopes! FW: [Elecraft] CW: Best low cost iambic key?
""You never know until you try them. The K8RA keys at: http://www.k8ra.com/ I have one(P-4) and love it. Different sizes for different people. Dick, NJ9K "" I bought a K8RA P-1 many years ago when they were somewhat cheaper. It seems to work OK, but the workmanship left much to be desired. I now use a Begali magnetic, which is a whole lot more expensive and a whole lot better key. Perhaps the best bet for low cost would be a used Bencher. I got mine for $20 at a swap meet, and it served well for many years. Jerry AI6L ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Maxwell's Equations.
The two volumes of Maxwell's "A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism" were reprinted by Dover, bound as one (very thick) volume. It does make for interesting reading! Now it gathers dust on my shelves next to another fabulous classic "The Theory of Sound", by Lord Raleigh (also two volumes bound as one by Dover), a great source for solutions of eigenvalue problems. Another huge volume by Dover is "The Scientific Papers of James Clerk Maxwell". These books are probably still available in one form or another. [Elecraft] Re: IC-7800
Looking at the QST review of the IC-7800, a couple of things leap out. The first is the keying waveform. It looks to me like this rig will have key clicks. ICOM will probably have the same attitude as Yaesu in cleaning up their act. Secondly, the transmit IMD is nothing to write home about. Third order only 23 dB down from a single tone, really marginal in my opinion. Especially for a $10,000 radio. I will stick with my K2, thank you.
