Hi,Several years ago Elecraft explained the firmware numbers. Lets use 2.86. The 2 is a major upgrade from 1. The point 86 is a minor or a bug fix. If the point 86 jumps to point 89 it means multiple improvements/bug fixes. Reading the latest fwnotes for an Elecraft product might explain the changes. Re: [Elecraft] Tuning Random-Length Wire Antenna with K3 Internal Tuner??
I agree on the overthinking. How about the Elecraft AX1 ant? All you need extra is coax and a tripod. It takes me 10-15 min max to get on the air. The only limitation is no 80, 60 and 10 meters Sorta works on these bands if you play with the whip and use the ATU. YMMV 73Jim Hk7sss. I have a large OCFD and a 40’ fiberglass’s mast to get it up, but frankly, for quickie portable, getting the center pole staked and up and guyed is more trouble than its worth. If it was for a weekend or a week, maybe. But I’d rather spend the time operating. I’ve used the simple wire with both a K3 and KX3 with internal ATUs. Works fine. Nothing has ever cooked. The internal ATUs typically get SWR to 1.2:1 or better. Feedline is 25 feet of RG-58 choked off a foot before the radio termination. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Opposite Sideband Null -- Follow Up
Hi,I got several error codes on my KX3 about a year ago. I sent it back for repairs and upgrades as it is 0250+ s/n. Most error codes were cause by the defective ribbon cable between the front and rear boards. One code was a cracked resistor on the KXFL3. Repairs were done quick and got a complete retest and upgrades. Sure works better now. 73Jim H K7SSS In a message dated 7/18/2020 9:24:19 PM Pacific Standard Time, ghyoung...@gmail.com writes: Six weeks or so ago, I put up a couple of posts asking if anyone had had an issue with opposite sideband null on their KX3. I was having a problem getting a good null when FL3 was selected, although I had very deep nulls with FL2 or FL1. I wasn’t motivated to check because of a perceived problem. I had simply decided to rerun the null procedure on a “just because” basis, for the same reason any radio I own ends up on the bench periodically for a checkup and alignment. I didn’t get any response from the list, so I presume this isn’t something most have rechecked. In any case, Elecraft support suggested my results indicated a defective KXFL3. After receiving and very carefully installing a new one, sure ’nuf. All is fine now. My subjective impression is that tuning around with narrow CW sounds “cleaner” since I have a good null on all bands and all filter settings. I don’t really know if the original KXFL3 was DOA (although it was no doubt checked by Elecraft prior to shipment), if it suffered a random or infant failure, or if I was careless with the KXFL3 board while doing the initial kit build a few years ago. Could certainly and perhaps most likely have been the latter. Calibration is probably worth doing once in a while anyway. Components age and drift, and, no matter what, things just happen. And I did get excellent support from Elecraft while working through the problem. Re: [Elecraft] Which Paddle?
Hi,My suggestions on options. Get the ATU, it tunes anything. If you are going to do SOTA, you need a battery and a charger. The KX2 internal battery is not cheap but it is inside the radio so you won't forget it and it is light weight. Mine lasts many hours. I'm not a CW operator so I can't say much but the KXPD2 is slightly lighter and the adjustment tool is part of the paddle. Jim HK7SSS In a message dated 5/4/2020 6:44:32 PM Pacific Standard Time, elecraft@mailman.qth.net writes: Well, gotta make up my mind on which paddle to order along with the radio. Just checked and my CU deposited what I thought the cost of a complete station should be into my account. These isolate in place options are dangerous, it was to easy to do this on-line. Not sure I want to spend it now though - preliminary buyer’s remorse? Think I’ll go over everything again, maybe have forgotten something. Let's see, antenna and feed line, check; inverted V support pole, check; and radio, check (except what paddle). Haven’t nailed down exactly what all other options might as well be purchased along with the radio either. That’s ok, got about a week before moving out to a nice country hill side a handful of miles out of the city limits. Been looking forward to this for a long time and want to savor it for a while. __Elecraft mailing listHome: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraftHelp: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htmPost: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.netPlease help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.htmlMessage delivered to k7...@aol.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] OT: The Colpitts mystery
Hi all,This brings back old memories. In 1962, I was in Vocational School in St Paul, MN studying Electronics. My instructors told me to get a 1st Phone w radar endorsement as it would make it easier to get a job. So I did at the FCC office in St Paul, and since then every job I had, required a 1st or 2nd class and some jobs a radar endorsement.I had to renewed it by getting 5 endorsements from officials in charge of the stations. I did not like it when it was converted to General Radio Telephone and life time.I got my ham license in 2011 as I could not do CW. I tried but always failed. 73Jim HK7SSS In a message dated 4/29/2020 4:10:24 PM Pacific Standard Time, jasimm...@pinewooddata.com writes: I took my Extra at the FCC in St Paul somewhere 1985-1987. Re: [Elecraft] KX2 Safe Operating PA Temperature
Hi,I have a KX3 in the 600 s/n range. There was a enlarged heatsink kit for radio's under 7500 s/n which doubled the time for the PA's to cut back. It's still listed on Elecraft's web site. Easy to install, no soldering. 73Jim HK7sss In a message dated 3/27/2020 8:39:00 AM Pacific Standard Time, st...@kj5t.net writes: It does sound like the KX2/KX3 are pretty tough little radios. For the record the time that it got that hot running 10 watts was SSB and I was doing a continual (recorded) CQ. I only run digital modes at 5 watts or less. Again I appreciate all the feedback, I have KX2 number 617, bought it in June 2016 but it sadly it gets neglected at times, doing a bit more FT8/FT4 though now, especially since i am stuck at my apartment. 73 de KJ5T __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

Hi Jonathan,I suspect when you did the factory reset you erased the factory configuration. Contact support@elecraft and ask for a copy of the original configuration. None of the other manuals have photo's. 73 Jim H K7SSS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] Blinking amber Light
Hi The led is part of the battery charger/RTC circuits. It tells you the clock is running. The was a more complete explanation a long time ago on the Reflector when the charger/RTC was started to be shipped. 73 Jim H K7SSS In a message dated 4/9/2016 7:51:41 P.M. Re: [Elecraft] SWR indicator
Hi Dana, I would check the coax you are using. Or try another coax. Looks like you checked the dummy load. My KX3 did the same thing several months, had a bad fitting on the coax jumper. 73 Jim H K7SSS In a message dated 12/27/2015 4:54:57 P.M. Pacific Standard Time, elecraft@mailman.qth.net writes: I have noticed on my KX3 that the SWR indicator gets progressively less accurate on the higher bands. I have the antenna tuner installed, but when I put it on bypass, I see into a 50 ohm dummy load 15m 1.2 12m 1.4 10m 1.5 several, 6m 2.1 I have used two homemade dummy loads and one commercial one, and the readings are repeatable. I have checked all three loads against my antenna analyzer, and all of them show 1.1 or less on all those bands, 6m having the largest SWR of 1.1. Should I be concerned about operating on 6m, given the faulty indicator? Is there some testing I can do, such as removing the antenna tuner and repeating the test? Thanks in advance. -- Dana Browne, AD5VC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to k7...@aol.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] KX3 Encoder Upgrade
Hi Richard, The Allen wrench is a 5/64, which you could get at a local hardware/tool store. The encoder upgrade does not come with an Allen wrench, my upgrade kit did not. [Elecraft] [KX3] Seapac Options
Hi all, For those who didn't go to Sea Pac and see the new options here is a visual report. The 2/4m option is the credit card size mounted on the ATU module. It's not much over 1/8 in thickness. I don't know if it was the 2m or 4m option. Suspect it was a 2m. The PX3 looks like shrunken P3. The front looks the same just smaller. The I/O is on the left side with lots of ports. The cabling needs to have right angle plugs on both ends as the units will be spaced out quite a bit. I was able to get Dick to open the PX3 to check out the internals. NO batteries external power only. There is some room inside, but who knows what other options will go inside? Like the P3 when first introduced maybe in the future Ext monitor card. There was two boards inside one next to the screen and another smaller card for power and I/O. The power uses the similar plug and cable used on the KX3. The display wasn't bright, it was in a bright building. 73 Jim H K7SSS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
