[Elecraft] K3 + P3

2010-09-27 Thread John Lyon
  Hi all,

Can someone please enlighten me about how MKR A
and MKR B work in the P3? My software in both
units is current.

I've just turned on the K3 and P3. VFO A is on
20m, and VFO B is on 40m. On page 6 of the manual,
it says that MKR A controls VFO A, and MKR B
controls VFO B. But I haven't turned MKR A on yet,
so the display shows the center freq display for
20m without a marker.

Now I tap the MKR A button, and the cyan marker
comes on. Fine so far, and MKR A allows me to QSY
by tuning and tapping the rotary knob.

Then I tap the A/B button on the K3. The rig
shifts to 40m display, and the marker remains
cyan. What I expected was, since MKR B controls
VFO B, there would be no marker because I haven't
activated MKR B. And I didn't expect to see MKR A
at all because this is VFO B.

Sometimes when I have changed bands, and moved the
marker to QSY, it takes two taps of the rotary
knob before the frequency is changed, other times
only once. And sometimes the marker frequency
changes to the new band freq and sometimes not.

What I'm saying is I am continually surprised at
how the markers work, but I can't figure out the
pattern. To me, any function should be consistent
and repeatable, so I'm missing something very
basic. When I asked support how the markers are
supposed to work, all they said was read the
manual. That's what got me in trouble in the first
place.

So enlighten me, ye Marker Gods who have figured
this out. I can't figger the logic.

John W9LHG

[Elecraft] K3 Complexity

2009-05-07 Thread John Lyon
Hi Elecrafters,

I am the proud owner (are as opposed to the unproud owners) of K3 #647.
And a K2 and K1 before it. I strongly believe in the Elecraft business
model, with its closeness to the customer and excellent service in
support of world class equipment made here in our country (well, some of
it), yet relatively affordable. Not an easy task, but the Aptodians have
done it.

But I, too, have become concerned that the K3 is becoming just another
menu driven radio - with so many parameters that the result is brain
paralysis. How many AGC parameters does one person need, even with
different modes and band conditions? How many angels really can dance on
the head of a pin? When is enough enough?

I'd rather see Elecraft complete the original feature list. What ever
happened to synchronous detection? The hope of a keyboard connection?
Or for that manner, a tightly integrated panadapter? An up-to-date,
complete owner's manual?

In my view, we've done a year of beta testing, and it is time to move on.

[Elecraft] K3 N1MM -- KDVR3

2009-01-16 Thread John Lyon
Hi Elecrafters,

How does one connect N1MM Logger to the K3 so you can execute a
pre-recorded memory in the DVR from Logger, and still have the normal
rig mic override the DVR when necessary?

Anyone care to share?

[Elecraft] K3 Thoughts

2008-05-31 Thread John Lyon

Hi Elecrafters,

Elecraft has specialized in ham rigs (yes, I'm old enough to have earned
the right to call them rigs)
that have two main characteristics: high ham band performance and
cost-effective design. That
they also provide the best support and customer service in this
nitch-market is icing on the cake.

The two principals in this small company have bet the farm on bringing
out a high-performance,
relatively affordable rig to a more mainstream ham market - at an age
when most would be
seeking safety and security in the background. Their business model of
contained growth, without
being driven by marketers and bean counters, is smart and common-sense.

Some people don't like the way the K3 was designed or operates. The ME
ME ME generation is
free to trade in their cars on a kilobuck Yeawoodcom rig of their
choice. Then, when it doesn't meet
your particular preferences, you can address your needs to those
manufacturers - and they will have

you fixed up in a jiffy.

Or try Ten Tec. They are currently trying to change our perception of
them the old fashioned way,
with advertising rather than excellent customer service. And while
you're there, ask them when

they are going to get the Orion software straightened out.

Meanwhile, we K3 owners are going to take this little high-performance
box that one can lift with
a pinky, sling it over our shoulder in Rose's case, and take it anywhere
we want to operate. Try

that with your 7800.

Bravo, Elecraft.

[Elecraft] K2 with MicroHam CW Keyer

2007-12-24 Thread John Lyon
Hi All and Merry Holidays.

I am using the MicroHam CW Keyer between my HP laptop and my K2.

I use three logging programs, and until recently all were working fine. Now

I have lost the rig control function on COM4. COM5 works fine for keying

with a logging program, paddles, or a keyboard.

Looking at the Port tab of the CW Keyer, it shows that the logging program,

through COM4, is polling the K2 - but the K2 is not responding.

I checked the Port parm in the menu, and it is set to 'ON'.

Any ideas?

[Elecraft] K2 DSP vs. Audio Filter

2006-06-01 Thread John Lyon
I am considering these two filters for a K2 that I'm about to buy. I'm
mainly a cw guy.

I've had experience with audio filters, but not DSP. Actually now that I
think about it, my TS-570DG has an audio DSP filter of sorts. I strongly
dislike the audio coming out of it as harsh and grainy.

I've listened to the demos for ssb and cw on the Elecraft site for the DSP
filter. The noise reduction is dramatic, but the audio sounds, well,
digital. If the K2 is as quiet a receiver as I've read, does the DSP trash
up the received audio? And how does it do with power line noise?

I would be interested in anyone's comments and impressions of these two
filters in real world operating situations, even though they are apples
and oranges. Is DSP worth three times the money in your opinion, and why?
