I've got a K3, a hand me down Ameritron AL-811 amp, an LDG AT-600 Pro tuner, and often use somewhat strange antennas. (See picture at www.ha19.no/la4rt/ ). I'm considering replacing the LDG tuner with a KAT500. The LDG unit isn't bad, but it's got a confusing user interface, and it's so noisy that I can't let it run a full tuning cycle while people are sleeping next door. It also doesn't match quite as well as the built in tuner in the K3. Can the field testers comment on what the KAT500 sounds like. Has anybody had the opportunity to compare both tuners? The el cheapo amp will stay for the foreseeable future, so I'm interested in if and how the combination will work. Will the cable from the K3 be useful even with a dumb amp? .. The two RCA connectors labeled PTT RLY are not needed for the KPA500 as the amp key line interrupt is in the 15-pin ACC cable (along with band change lines and AUXBUS). If you're using another amplifier, you'll want to put the KAT500 in the keying/PTT line between the transceiver and amplifier. The KAT500 wants to hot-switch relays at exciter power, not QRO. I guess this means that the PTT line goes [ K3 ]---[ KAT500 ]---[ AL-811 ] And that the K3 tune button will tune the KAT500 when it's inline, and the KAT500 won't let the amp key up unless the tuner is ready. The main antenna is simply disconnected while transmitting. Why isn't the sub-rx antenna? You're absolutely right, as long as I can't use diversity, dual watch would help me just as much as having a sub-rx does. Jon LA4RT After you set the rf gain on the subreceiver to get a decent balance between the two receivers, you will find that the second receiver often allows you to hear a station in the second rx that is temporarily unreadable in the main receiver due to qsb. Also, in crowded band conditions the different stations within the receiver passband will arrive with varying polarizations, and you can hear them spatially separated like orchestra instruments on a stereo sound stage. This is helpful both for ssb and cw. Sometimes it can even help with multiple cw signals on the exact same frequency. 73, Erik K7TV Your second antenna does NOT need to be resonant to receive, either by itself or with another in diversity mode. My receive antenna is seasonal so I have employed antennas for other bands for receive when it is not up. If you want to work the locals (within 500 miles) a low (less than 100 ft high) 160M loop is a great sky warmer. If you are more interested in working DX on the Topband then give an Inverted-L a try. Up to a point, this is true. Given that a loop is possible, you can also make an inverted L, and it would work better for DX. A double L may also be a good choice. See http://www.surriel.com/radio/160-meter-double-l-antenna. But sky warmers can do very well, too. I don't have trees taller than 4m (13'). My lot is abt 600 sq m (0.15 acres). This is actually considered large in Europe. There is almost, but not quite, room for a dipole for 80m. To get on the lower bands, I started out with an inv vee, slightly shortened, 15m (45') at the apex and 4-5m (15') up at the ends. I built it for a local sweepstakes like contest, but worked 80m DXCC with it. (Easier from Europe than from the USA.) Last winter, I wanted to play with 160m, and ran low wire to the ends of the inv vee. Seen from above, the antenna looks rather like a 'Z'. Result after one season: 61 countries, including Canada, USA and Tajikistan. It helps that outside my local area of abt 200k inhabitants, population is pretty sparse for 3-400 km or so. There is also no AM broadcasting. This makes QRM arriving from high angles less of a problem than it would be in much of the USA. I'm not arguing that you should build a skywarmer where a low angle antenna is feasible. But it would be a shame not to try *something*, if you can't put up an ideal antenna. 73 Jon LA4RT I've had very good luck with two that I've built. The one that favors Europe, Africa, the Caribbean and So. America has only 30 feet of the 135 feet of wire vertical. The rest of it is horizontal, ending up around 50 feet high in a tree. This Inverted-L is fed with 50 Ohm coax with a 500pf capacitor in series at the base of the antenna. Presently there are 16 short (1/8 wavelength, 65 ft) radials. The second Inverted-L has 60 ft. of vertical with the rest horizontal, sloping down to 30 feet. This antenna favors the west and northwest. It has 8 quarter wave, 130 feet, radials. Running the K3 barefoot with these Inverted-L antennas, since I've moved to my new VA QTH, I've increased my Topband DXCC total from 201 to 222 countries confirmed running 100 Watts or less. Some of the best DX to the east includes 4X, S0, 5N, D4 and UA6. To the south CE, CX, VP8/F and to the west FO, FO/A,T30,T2,KH6,ZL a number of KL7's to the NW. So, as you can see the Inverted-L, even without a lot of the wire being vertical, can perform well as a DX antenna. It certainly will outperform a 160M loop. So, if you are interested in making longer haul QSOs on 160M, I would ditch the loop and go with an Inverted-L. If you have a tower, I would shunt feed it, but that's another story. 73, Rich - K1HTV = = = -Original Message- From: gold...@charter.net [mailto:gold...@charter.net] Sent: Saturday, October 15, 2011 12:15 PM To: Elecraft Subject: [Elecraft] 160m loop experiment a big failure I set up a 160m loop in the yard to try one out from all the great reading I did regarding the antenna. Re: [Elecraft] Panadapters - need for bandmap capability
On 11/08/2010 03:10 PM, Barry N1EU wrote: I'm offering this as food for thought. It seems that one important feature that panadapters (SDR, LP-PAN, P3, etc) lack is the inability to tag a spectral trace with a callsign to mark its identity. For example, check this mockup: http://n1eu.com/bndmp_spec.jpg If I qsy to a trace I see on a busy band, I want to be able to ID that trace so I don't keep coming back to it. And those ID'd callsigns by trace frequency would constitute a bandmap. Ultimately, this bandmap could have the same functionality as the bandmap in a contest logger (e.g., N1MM). It's just rotated 90 degrees and has freq interval spacing aligned with the panadapter waterfall display. This ID'd panadapter functionality would be immensely useful in both unassisted and assisted contesting. I realize that development of this capability might require unique collaboration between several software/hardware vendors but it would fundamentally enhance panadapter-centric operating. (CW Skimmer provides some of this capability, but it's totally limited to callsigns decoded by Skimmer, not by the operator, etc.) Me too! For the unassisted operator, it could be used to show stations worked, and stations identified but skipped over. The assisted operator might want to include dx spots and skimmer spots. Different operators would have different preferences for timing out marks, etc. So the panadapter should provide a mechanism, and software on the computer implement the policy. 73 Jon LA4RT, Trondheim, Norway __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

If you want to let multiple programs access the same serial port, this can be done with software like LP-PAN. But there's no addressing in serial port comms, so PC pull works better than device push. Is it OK to use the DL1 and this formula at this power level? The formula assumes a constant 150 mV voltage drop across the diode, i.e. that it is conducting during a half cycle. At the level you are measuring, things are more complicated. So I wouldn't rely on the formula. Things you could do: 1. Make an amplifier, and calibrate it. 2. Borrow a scope to make the measurement. You probably have to do this in order to do (1), as well. 3. Make a computer model in spice, and tweak until you get the the measured voltage. When experimenting with diversity receive (antenna #2 connected to the BNC socket), on some bands I've heard clicks, which I've taken to be the carrier operated relays. However there are those who have grown accustomed to the M.CH knob on Kenwood rigs that allow for 1Khz movement but it *does* clear the LSB's and allows you to tune the band in a channelized fashion. Personally I kinda wish that we'd use the band in a more random fashion and less like CBer's but thats just me... ;) Oh yes, I remember the M.CH. knob. There must have been some function on that knob that I actually used. I know because I got a number of half QSOs on my TS-570 by turning that knob by mistake. You can buy 1N34A diodes here: http://www.mtechnologies.com/ohr/parts.htm I did, but I haven't built my RF probe yet :-) But for now, your best bet may be to try to find a local ham who can help you. I'm sure you are frustrated, and you probably didn't intend it that way. But you did come across as pretty aggressive in your message. It's probably better to try to adjust your tone to fit your audience. 73 LA4RT Jon Jon Perelstein wrote: I ordered a K1 based that “They all … have built-in test equipment to simplify alignment and testing” (from the Elecraft web site). Now -- according to Elecraft support -- I have to source obsolete parts from China, buy drill equipment and copper bathroom pipe, and rip apart my television (or my computer) to cannibalize printed circuit boards. Either that or buy an oscilloscope that would cost me more than the K1. I’m building a 2 band K1 -- 40 meters (band 1) and 20 meters (band 2). During receiver alignment, Band 1 (40 meters) seems to be working fine. Band 2 (20 meters) however, does nothing. The support guys are telling me that I have to build an RF probe for further testing, and they’ve pointed me to a schematic in the K1 user manual and told me to go build the probe from scratch. That's about as useful to me as pointing me to the schematic of the K1 and telling me to go build the K1 from scratch. I'm a new ham (March, 2008). I'm not a home electronic hobbyist. I don't have test equipment. I have no experience at homebrew, nor do I have the knowledge to do so. I bought the K1 as a starter to get my feet wet in working electronics. After a number of emails with support about how to build an RF probe (a question that was repeatedly ignored), I was finally referred to a couple of different web sites: - The first site starts out with “… using an old piece of double-sided printed circuit board that you have in your junk bin …”. Where exactly do I have double-sided printed circuit board sitting around? Do I hacksaw off a hunk from my television or from my computer? Radio Shack doesn’t sell it, nor does Mouser. - The next site also wants me to use double-sided printed circuit board, plus they want me to insert it into a copper pipe and drill holes through the pipe. Rght … so in other words I have to go out and buy a drill that’s capable of drilling through copper. And I have to buy the copper pipe and end caps. Will I have to get the pipe threaded in order to mount the end caps? - Then there’s the site that built the RF probe inside a ball-point pen. The author of that site admitted that it took him a number of tries before he was able to build it without breaking the diode, and that this is a project for the more advanced hobbyist. It also turns out that nobody carries the diode specified by the schematic (1N34A). According to Mouser, it’s obsolete and out of stock, but if I want to pay a couple of hundred bucks, they’ll gladly source it from China. Mouser will sell me something that they claim is a replacement for the 1N34A, but all of the web sites I've been referred to tell me not to use that specific replacement. I bought a kit because it comes with all the parts, has a pre-built chassis, has pre-drilled holes, and includes complete and well-thought out instructions on how to mount everything -- as well as a commitment to provide support during the construction process. Maybe in two or three years I'll have the experience to build my own RF probe, but in the meantime I'm stuck with a K1 that I can't finish without an RF probe, and there's no way that I can build an RF probe without a trip to China. Anybody want a mostly complete K1? Make me an offer -- I'll even throw in shipping. Geoffrey Mackenzie-Kennedy wrote: A type of antenna that I keep packed for use at short notice is a halfwave centre fed dipole for use as a vertical, where part of the coax feeder forms the bottom half of the dipole. How do you terminate the radiating part of the coax? I've tried antennas based on this principle both on HF and 2m. On HF, I tried the no counterpoise antenna by M3KXZ with very disappointing results. On VHF, I've had good results with the coax antenna by LA1IC described (in Norwegian!) at http://la2t.org/teknikk/vertikal2m.html. Choking off the radiating part of the coax is challenging, because we're trying to choke a voltage node. I was told that the coil which terminates the radiating part of the coax on the 2m antenna is chosen to resonate as a parallell trap at 2m with its stray capcitance. On the HF antenna, I just wrapped the feeder around a large toroid 10-15 times, and that did not work well. My 2m antenna needs are modest, so take this with a grain of salt. 73 LA4RT Jon ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. If you really want to go high end, include an optical Ethernet interface. Wired ethernet tends to give problems with RFI. If you hear a steady signal around 14030, that's Ethernet. Cost? Probably too high for comfort for most of us. But you may come across something surplus. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
