Re: [Elecraft] Mac utility with K3S Puts K3S in TX mode!

2015-07-24 Thread K1GQ
Correct, the driver did it. Apple provides a driver for FTDI-based USB-serial
devices. That driver unconditionally asserts DTR and ignores attempts by
applications to turn DTR off. When you install the FTDI-provided driver, it
takes precedence over the Apple driver and behaves more responsibly.

I filled a bug report about this; Apple marked it as a “duplicate” and closed
it.

Re: [Elecraft] P3 forgets set ranges in Fixed Track mode (WARC)

2014-03-15 Thread K1GQ
My P3 routinely forgets the per-band SPAN when I set it using software commands
instead of P3 buttons. Doesn’t matter which band, and the SPAN is remembered
properly if I press the corresponding FN button for the computer-set SPAN
before I change bands.

My P3 also forgets the per-band REF LVL setting, but not always and only on
160m.

this issue. I can't pinpoint exactly how this happens but I am usually
operating on 10 meters when I change bands and discover 12 and 17 have had
the fixed track frequency I set disappear.

I have never complained before as the reset has been infrequent. Now, with
10 open, I find this problem occurs daily, sometimes two or three times a
day. Not an earth shattering problem as the P3 works fine and I change the
setting back, just an irritant. I'm wondering if it is just my station or
have others experienced this, remedy anyone?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT500 producing S4-5-birdie on 28004.5

2013-06-29 Thread K1GQ
Aire,

Yes, that spurious signal on 28.004.5 is real and generated within the KAT500.
Recent KAT500 beta firmware optionally shuts off an oscillator inside the
KAT500 to suppress the spur. The oscillator is automatically turned back on by
a number of events, such as pressing a button or transmitting.

The oscillator is also turned on by activity on the KAT500 serial port, which
means that software like mine that polls the KAT500 to keep track of antenna
port selection also keeps that spur alive. Sigh.

 KPA500 off (AC cord disconnected)

 Results:
KAT500 switched on, Mode = auto, ANT = 1, no antenna connected: *S4 birdie on
 28004.5 kHz* measured by K3

 test 1:
 - Changing ANT connector on K3: birdie gone.
 - Change antennaconnected on K3 back: birdie S4 again
 - Change to other antennaconnectors on KAT500 makes very little difference:
0.3dB Measured on dBV meter of K3 with AGC off
 - Disconnecting the elecraft interface cables makes NO difference. Keep them
 disconnected for further tests.

 test 2:
 - Switch off KAT500 (hold mode switch): birdie drops 0.5dB
 - Disconnect DC from KAT500: birdie is gone. (proof that is has to do with
 the KAT500)

 test 3:
 - KAT500 switched on again
 - Connect dummyload on ANT 1 of KAT500 with KAT500 on: birdielevel goes UP
+2dB (as compared to no dummyload connected in tests 1 and 2). S-meter now
now has gone up to S5.
 - then switch off KAT500: birdielevel drops DOWN -10.5dB
 - switch off KAT500: birdie gone

 Can anyone reproduce this?

I have not checked all other frequencies, so this might be the only one.
Still this is a birdie that I cannot ignore.

Not true in my case. The only way to completely suppress my spur is to remove
12VDC power to my KAT500 by disconnecting the power cable. Turning the KAT500
“off” isn’t enough because the internal electronics are still alive.

Re: [Elecraft] [KAT500] 10m Spur

2013-02-21 Thread K1GQ
I’m using Elecraft cables for both connections; those cables have beads on each
end. I added two more beads to each cable while watching the spur level with
the K3 dBV meter; no effect.

FWIW, I’ve heard from two others KAT500 owners that hear the spur but didn’t
post to the reflector. The spur is obvious on my P3.

I'm the author of the post that Bill (W4ZV) quoted. My experiments
with the PowerMate are recent and on-going. I'm considering modifying
my software to support more than one PowerMate :-)

It's rather handy to be able to change the *receive* frequency while
transmitting, without disrupting the transmit frequency or the
formation of Morse characters. Some radios severely hose CW if you
fiddle with front panel controls while transmitting. The K3 is pretty
good about this, but not yet perfect.

W4NL noted that the TenTec 315 soft-rubber trim rings fit the K3 VFOA
knob nicely. They also fit the PowerMate knob, although not quite as
snugly; no comment on color choices.
