Re: [Elecraft] OT Good Source for Stainless Fasteners and Connectors?
When using stainless hardware there is very little strength compared to a steel fastener. So the minimum strength needs to be confirmed. You don't want the bolts to shear and topple over. I started out with the settings outlined on the Heil All things Elecraft page - it's at http://www.heilsound.com/amateur/dsp-settings/125-all-things-elecraft and with the help of another operator finally came up with the following :- -16, -16, -06, +00, +06, +12, +12 and +09 for TXEQ. Compression is at 25 and mic gain is high enough to have the fifth, and occasionally the sixth, ALC bar flickering. With those settings I often get unsolicited reports of very good audio. I just posted a similar question on the Topband and Ham Antenna reflectors. I am considering the same antennas for my QTH and adding a second receiver to the K3. So for me this will be a significant investment with the receive system and extra receiver so I only want to do it once and want to be sure that I make the best choice I can. Re: [Elecraft] ESSB
I had the fortunate experience to work Jim during the contest and yes he had a nice clean signal. With the settings on my K3, Heil IC mic and SGC power cube I had multiple comments on my signal and how nice it sounded. It felt good to have busy contesters make such a statement. If you heard Jim's signal during the SS this weekend then you got to hear what the shaping he is describing sounded like. His audio was very piercing but clean. It's not what I would want to hear during a long ragchew with him, but his purpose was to project his intelligibility across 40 meters for the purpose of a 30-second contact. Another way to look at this is that our ear is most sensitive to frequencies around 2 kHz (roughly) and so you really want to put as much of your power in that region as you can. In this way, you're using the response of the other op's ear to your advantage. To further paraphrase what Jim said, when it comes to compression, "A little is good, but more is not better," as evidenced by so many shockingly bad signals this weekend. I wish someone would undertake a project to send contesters recordings of themselves. I happened to be listening when a station with especially egregious audio called K9YC, who gave the op a quick but honest report at the end of his exchange. Who knows if that station will heed the advice for the next contest. After looking it over I decided it was a 36-MHz quarter wave vertical with decoupling section at the base and fed with a gamma-match. The gamma has a 7/16 coax connector with N-female adapter, so apparently commercial band. My friend also recently acquired an 80-foot crank-up tower for $100 (Yes, you read that correctly). Some guys are really lucky! He lives on disability so has few funds for ham radio, but asks me what antennas he can put on top of his tower. He does not want a directional antenna like a yagi...sooo First we considered he could lengthen the 72-inch commercial vertical to operate on 10m and mount it on top of the tower. But that would only give him one band.He could also shorten it to 6m but there is little local activity on that band so 10m probably would provide him better use. For HF bands I thought about a dipole with auto-tuner. Finally thought maybe running sloping dipoles might work well. Base load that tower as grounded vertical? 160-40m? Re: [Elecraft] K3 - use of a Clear Speech unit
I really like mine for mobile operations. Removes hiss and other disturbances in the audio. I never tried it with the K3 as it is a mono speaker. I rarely use Cans anymore to listen to the K3 as I added external speakers and I find that easier to listen that way. When I used Cans lightning was happening I tired quickly. If you do go that route I would first get good external speakers the if still needed get the external DSP units as the speakers in the units are good for mobile I am not sure I would be satisfied with them in the shack. The K3's ergonomics are different, but pretty easy to learn unless one needs hundreds of buttons and knobs. Monty K2DLJ Joe, W4TV and Ian, GM3SEK; I found both of your posts to be spot on with me and very insightful. I own K3 #371 and have been disappointed with the lack of its further development in the past 18 months or the "finishing" of some features as mentioned by Ian.. And as much as I have tried, really tried, for SIX years to adapt to the "tap and hold" button feature...it's not for me. When new, the K3 was a blast to own, to use and to participate in the development of it for about the first four years. But my attitude towards it has changed in the past two years or so. It's not the the K3 is "bad", far from it, but it could be refined into an even better rig rather than into an apparent development stepping stone for the KX3 which holds no interest here for me. To me, one of the shortcomings of SDR is that the promise of on-going support and upgrades is usually not fulfilled in the long run, for myriad business and technology related reasons. I view promises from any manufacturer (TT, ICOM, Kenwood, Flex etc.) concerning future, long-term firmware development with great skepticism. It never continues past a certain time-frame which is usually ends much sooner than one initially expects. As for updated/redeveloped K3 boards to be forthcoming, I hope ... but expect not. So I am not holding out hope for any further meaningful development for the K3. Elecraft has been far better with it than most but it appears that the K3 with 8000+ units sold is now a mature product which will see refinements and enhancements as rarer and rarer occurrences if at all. I have found myself contemplating parting ways with the K3 and Elecraft of late being drawn back to using my TT Corsair II and Omni V.9 more and more. Highly modified by me, they compete very favorably with the K3 for my op style and expectations. (IMO TT has gone in a very strange business direction of late which causes me to wonder what they are doing). Everyone is entitled to their personal opinions and for most the K3 seems to still be the epitome of HF rig evolution. That's fine. I mean you no bad will nor is my intention to convince you otherwise. But after six years I still miss my dedicated band switching (with stacking registers) and I still don't like Kool-Aid regardless of flavor. ;-) 73 de N1LQ-Dave __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to mon...@mindspring.com __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to gold...@charter.net __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

I suspect that that something has arced and now there is a shorting path that shows up as you go up in power and the KAT500 finds it. Note I do not use a KPA500 but a different type of amp. I also was able to watch the swr climb slowly with my W2 as it was slowly starting the destruction cycle but with lower power the swr was steady. However after the damage was complete even my antenna analyzer showed the problem. It took me a bit of time to find the damage before I finally had it nailed down. So even though stuff visually looks good and is fine at lower power the coax could be damaged internally and you are not finding it with the dummy load as it does not react the same as the antenna because the swr is good. Just a thought. ~73 Don KD8NNU -.- -.. ---.. -. -. ..- -Original Message- From: Ray Coles Sent: Monday, December 30, 2013 2:13 PM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 SWR problem Forgot to mention that I hauled my MFJ wattmeter/dummy load out to the bush and pushed up 100 watts into it down the feeder with 1:1 SWR, which convinced me that at least my UR8 feeder is OK. Does anyone know how to convert the VFWD readings from the KAT500 software to actual watts out? If I knew this reference calculation then I could eliminate my W2 from the system. I have noticed since the last update of software I am getting more retuning also. I had been running a test version prior to that and it did not exhibit the same retune as often. In fact I did a tune or train check prior to the contest yesterday by going thru the bands and pressing tune to make sure everything was good so I could go and point and shoot. However, the tripping of the retuning process was a distraction. I do switch antennas a lot as I have 4 choices to pick. I do understand that the KAT500 only has 3 inputs and am aware if I do the switch for the 4th antenna. If I were to describe the problem I think that something is getting lost in the memories. Butwhile fiddling around trying to find out why the [3] button wasn't doing what it was supposed to do, I more or less accidentally tapped the [7] button, and the magic apostrophe appeared after the H. And most importantly, I now have enough amplification for the Kenwood mic to be functional. It would seem that there are only two explanations for this: 1. The manual is wrong. 2. Bad firmware. Anybody know which answer is correct? I have no way to tell. [Elecraft] KAT500 fine tune question
I just picked up a KAT500 tuner and connected it up and have been able to figure almost everything out. The only thing I can not get to work is a fine tune. The manual says start a tune cycle within 5 seconds to get this to work. However, I can not find the magic combination with proper timing to get it to fire off. I am wanting to make sure I know how to use all the tools in the toolbox, but I can not figure this one out. So I am sure that it is operator error. Otherwise, its operation is just as described and its rock solid. Now my W2 matches SWR with the radio and KAT500, this is a comforting feeling. In theory yes. But there can be a lot of signals in the IF and if you struggling to get a weak one out then the RX is better with a narrow filter. I don’t know the math behind this or the electronic design details but I can tell its better by my decodes after I added the filter. Put VFO A on the DX frequency. 2. Tap A>B *twice* in succession. First tap will put the VFO A frequency in VFO B. Second tap will put all the other VFO A parameters [like mode] into VFO B. The K3 won't go into SPLIT mode if the two VFO's are in different modes. 3. Hold SPLIT. The little TX indicator on the right end of the display will now point down to "B". 4. Select your TX frequency with VFO B. It takes way longer to describe it than to do it. You can listen on your transmit frequency by either holding REV [#2 on the keypad], or tapping A/B. Holding REV will swap A and B for as long as you hold it, when you release it, you're back to RX on A and TX on B. Tapping A/B will reverse the VFO's, tapping A/B again will put them back in normal split mode. If you have a P3, both VFO cursors will show up. VFO A is usually on the left because we almost always split "UP." I use it everyday and have purchased the the 6.0 version and have been waiting for a long time for it. However going thru the progression of the free versions of how they have fixed bugs that I see signficant improvement. Right now they have released a beta version of software similar to how Elecraft does as they need to get a larger test base to improve the product. I will be installing the beta version after I read more info on the HRD forum and reflector as I tend to wait a few days for dust to settle for any beta release. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Audio/IF filtering definitions
I have multiple macros for setting filter width for digital modes. I use the HRD suite of software with the DM780. Basically I center the selected signal with one mouse click and then pick the filter I want with another mouse click and center point at 1.5 where I centered the RX transmission. I can take PSK signals that are being masked by other other signals in a wide waterfall to 599 copy. So I don’t have to care about strong signals drowning out a weak signal I am trying to copy. This is one of the great strong points of the K3 from my perspective with the multiple filter options for different operating conditions. ~73 Don KD8NNU -.- -.. ---.. -. -. ..- -Original Message- From: Bill Frantz Sent: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 6:25 PM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Audio/IF filtering definitions In addition to the SSB examples several people have posted, the Hi and Lo Cut controls are quite useful in soundcard digital modes. For example, when I use my computer for PSK, I scan the band with the bandwidth set to a low of 300 Hz and a high of 2.6KHz. I have a macro to set this bandwith (IS 1450;BW0230;). When I start a QSO, I narrow the Hi and Lo Cut controls to eliminate most of the other signals on my waterfall. The audio frequency marks on the computer's waterfall make this adjustment straight forward if a bit fiddly. The resulting bandwidth is between 50Hz and 150Hz and makes use of the 250Hz crystal filter in the K3. (Someday I have to reprogram the computer to send the narrow bandwidth details to the K3.) With this narrow bandwidth I find it easier to pull weak signals out of the noise floor and avoid overload from nearby strong signals. [Elecraft] K3 with HRD using CW modes
I use my K3 with HRD software and have the PTT working with all the digital modes except CW. There are four different drop down types in HRD and I have tried them all with the PTT. The only way I get CW to work is using VOX. This makes no difference if I use DATA Mode, USB or LSB, or CW for the settings on the K3. So the question is what setting am I missing as I can not send CW without VOX on. Its just computer generated dits and dahs thru a sound card no different that any other computer digital mode which works fine for me. I can live with VOX but then if I forget to turn it off it creates other potential problems. I will post my observations herewith. It took a bit of work to find the "sweet spot" setting for my noise environment. Once found, it has proven to be quite satisfactory. Having worked with a number of SDR type of radios (Flex, Yaesu, and now K3 and for that matter K2) I can say that, in my opinion, the K3 is as good as it gets. I sense a number of users may not be entirely familiar with noise reduction as it pertains to a software defined radio. In some cases, it seems one is trying to use noise reduction where one should be using noise blanking, a common mistake in attempting to reduce impulse noise from power lines. Another common mistake would be to solicit the settings from another user in a different noise environment. [Elecraft] KAT500
After reading the manual that was scanned in I noticed that when the unit is turned off that the antenna ports are not shorted together. For my qth I like to shut down my station with my antenna switch the off position shorting my antennas to ground. This in my mind is a good thing as it helps drain static from the system. So I am thinking that if I get a KAT500 then I would have to add more switches one for each antenna. Am I correct in my thinking or are there better ideas how to get this accomplished. Extra switches need extra coax which is more cost and a wee bit more loss. Any thoughts, comments. Re: [Elecraft] Capicator Size for filtering across battery power
Gents, Thanks for all the information regarding my request for how to size a capacitor across my batteries to fix my perceived problem of RF. >From what I understand is that this is just the normal current flow during voice peaks or digital peaks when transmitting and not RF. So my options as I understand them are to put a large cap like the car stereo guys do across the batteries. These are large cap's and since I have both the amp and radio on the same batteries I will need two cap's one at each device. If I have this wrong then please correct me. Again as always thanks for the replies on the topic as there was more behind a simple question than I realized. On point 2) I would rather power the accessories on the battery end of the rig power cord as the voltage regulation will not have the rig IR losses. 2. On point 4) I have used a 5 Farad cap with 3 inch leads to the rig. It does the best of trying to cancel out the IR losses on voice pikes and does a great job. This is the one used by the car monster audio amps. Cost is around $50 direct and less on eBay. NOT electromagnetic fields, just simple Ohm's Law. There's IR drop on the power cable between the battery (or power supply) and the rig, and if the rig is running full power, peaks of at least 20A, with an envelope that follows SSB modulation. If you are powering accessories from that same battery and have audio connections between those accessories and the rig, the IR drop (modulated SSB envelope) will appear between the chassis of the accessory and the chassis of the K3, and will be added to the audio. That will SOUND like RF feedback, but it is NOT. W8JI told me about this several years ago. There are at least four good fixes for this issue. I've set up and tested all of these, and all of them work. 1) Don't power accessories from the same supply that feeds your rig. Instead use a separate wall wart for them. 2) Power accessories from the same supply, but use a simple power splitter (Y-cord) at the RIG end of the power cable to get the accessory power. 3) Power the accessories from the battery or big power supply, but bond from chassis to chassis of all interconnected equipment with short, fat copper. 4) Power the accessories from the battery or big supply, but use a monster capacitor across the terminals right at the rig. When I say monster cap, I'm talking at least 10,000 uF. That's big, and it ain't cheap. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
