Unfortunately that was already set to PH.R SW-. Changing it to + definitely didn't mute the speakers! The issue we're seeing is the speakers are not completely muted. You can still hear audio coming out of the speakers, nowhere near as loud, but it's still there. Unlike the built in speaker which is completely muted under the same circumstances. You did prompt me to try a regular speaker in the SPKRS jack (non-amplified). Interestingly there is NO audio heard when SPKR+PH = YES. This leads me to believe there is 'some' audio at the jack, enough to be amplified. Why, that I can't answer, maybe something to do with input impedance of the amplified speakers? Anyway, just another data point in something that's not a big issue but makes for good discussion. The head of the screw closest to the transformer, is directly under the transformer and when the transformer is torqued down it rides on the screw. The thin clear plastic wrap is the only thing keeping the wire from contacting the screw head. Yes the transformer is up against the bumpers equally and installed per the manual rev d. My plan was to take this amp on DXpeditions but it appears it would not last one trip before the winding breaks through and touches the screw. Would anyone know if there is some preventative measures to keep the transformer safe? It would be a shame to find the transformer/amp damage only to have it explode as you plug it in upon arrival to some rare DX place. At the very least these two screws should be flat head screws and have countersunk holes. Suggestions? Re: [Elecraft] K3 Receiver Noise Level -- Evaluation and Adjustment
All one has to do is go to the CONFIG menus, select the parameter, and tap Display and be told what the Default value is for that parameter. It's easy. That's pretty short. 73, Ken K3IU On 12/19/2009 12:02 PM, Guy Olinger K2AV wrote: Short version: put a way to reset to default AGC in the K3 itself. Do this ASAP. Otherwise the reader has to do the research (Google, site search, thumb manual looking for numbers...) to determine what the factory defaults are. Digging around on the web site, etc, will defeat a lot of readers. Not because your site is trashy (it's not), or the manual is bad (it's not), or K3 users are stupid (they're not), but because in human evolution web-searching was never the reason why one did or didn't live long enough to pass on one's genes to one's children. That and such things as RTFM were not Darwinian criteria. More than that... Human behavior studies in information assimilation on all kinds of us regular folks show over and over that on average humans don't do well at drilling down in information, become quickly bored, tired, irritated, frustrated, confused just to name a few. And while they may doggedly stay with such tasks to keep a job to feed and house the family, teeth-grinding information drilling to find the default numbers does not cut it in our pastime activities. Moreover, even relating to work, studies with competent well-thought-of clerical personnel showed that errors, misreads, no-finds, and nasty remarks increased dramatically with the number of steps to fetch, or with any uncertainty as to the source, appearance or presentation of the needed information. Given the amount of attention, confusion and complaints related to noise and AGC, wouldn't it make sense to identify your default CONFIG:AGCxxx setting numbers with a dEF to the left of the number when VFO A rolls over it, so that when the folks from Mount Aptos say to use the default AGC, that can be easily set and/or confirmed and/or returned to without needing to dig up the numbers somewhere? 73, Guy. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I believe that the boot up detection is only to determine whether the jumper is installed, not whether it has been activated by a strong signal. I really don't see a need to report that the jumper is installed on the display since one would surely remember if the jumper has been installed. It does work, by the way. I put my K2 on a nearby antenna and keyed it with power at about 1 watt while the K3 was listening on a nearby frequency with the preamp ON. [Elecraft] [Fwd: K3 #202 - Firmware 3.23, 3.25 Problem and Solution]
G'morning, all: This is an email that I just sent to K3 Support. If you haven't backed up your K3 using the K3 Utility program, this may provide you motivation to do so. I don't know precisely what was wrong with my K3 or what in the backed up configuration corrected the problem, but restoring the backup fixed the problem. 73, Ken K3IU ~ Original Message Subject:K3 #202 - Firmware 3.23, 3.25 Problem and Solution Date: Mon, 17 Aug 2009 08:51:24 -0400 From: Ken K3IU kenk...@cox.net To: K3 Support k3supp...@elecraft.com G'morning, Gents: An interesting problem reared its head this morning when I turned on the K3 with 3.25/2.21 installed. When I switched mode to SSB (either USB or LSB) this morning there was no audio output. S-meter action continued to indicate input and all other modes produced normal audio output. It has worked fine in this mode because I was checking the Auto-Notch feature using SSB modes before this. I disconnected everything from the backplane except the power cord and the antenna. Still no audio on SSB modes. I went through all the CONFIG menu items and everything was as before. I particularly looked at the Squelch items and squelch was set to FM Only with level as 00. When I checked CONFIG:PB CTRL, even though I had set it for Shift=.05 while in CW mode, it indicates Shift=.01 when in SSB mode. I am unable to change that so it is .05 in SSB mode. Not sure if that is pertinent or not but it doesn't seem right. I did a complete reload of all the 3.25 firmware files and still no SSB audio. The problem presents itself on both the main and the sub Rx. I checked the filter setup using the K3 Utility and there have been no changes, i.e., appropriate filters are still set up for SSB. SSB Transmission is normal when monitored in my K2. I decided to regress to 3.23/2.19 and see what happened. No change... still no audio in SSB modes. I regressed to 3.19/2.17 and the SSB mode audio is normal. I removed the bottom front panel and inspected the resistor/diode components and the jumper for Rx Front End Protection that I installed per the Application notes for 3.25 changes. Everything looks and measures correctly. I have made all mods not excluded by serial number on this K3 (#202). I just re-loaded 3.25/2.21 and still no SSB Rx audio. I just remembered that I had done a backup of the configuration 3 days ago using the K3 Utility, after installing 3.25. After running the Restore program in the K3 Utility just now to restore that backup, I have audio on both SSB modes. And... the CONFIG: PB CTRL now indicates Shift=.05 in SSB mode and .01 in CW and Data modes. So whatever happened overnight was corrected by restoring the last backup. Of course, I haven't a clue as to what was wrong and what in the restore fixed it, but K3 #202 is back to normal ops now. 73. There is a gotcha involved in the use of external speakers with the K3. It's addressed indirectly on page 20 of the D2 version of the manual in the 2nd paragraph under PHONES when it reads ... if you use a stereo plug at the external speaker jack but is easily glossed over by the reader. Many / most monaural external speakers have a MONAURAL plug on their cords. DON'T plug one of these (monaural) plugs into the speaker jack. It's configured for stereo and the sleeve of the mono plug will short the ring portion of the stereo jack and thereby short one channel of audio. I ... along with several others ... have experienced a failure of the audio amplifier IC on the front panel board due to one channel being shorted by the sleeve of a monaural plug. It seems to take many hours of operation under this condition to cause the IC to fail ... over a year in mine and another's case. The IC is -NOT- an easy change! Just remember that one audio channel is on the tip and the other is on the ring of the plug and connect speakers in this manner using -only- a stereo plug. My particular trap was forgetting that using a stereo Y merely moved the trap six inches away from the jack. (;-) As others have pointed out, speakers from the two-radio field are good choices, and the CB isle at truck stops usually sell nice speakers. Mine are Barjan 320-701's. Re: [Elecraft] K3 PTT in SSB with CW-Key?
I would like to add my opinion to this issue... just in case anyone is keeping score :-) . I would recommend that this NOT be incorporated into the K3. There are at least 4 places that I'm aware of on the existing K3 where PTT can be manually asserted while in SSB mode. On the Front Panel one may tap the XMIT button; the MIC connector has a PTT pin for access; on the back panel there is an input jack for an external switch for asserting PTT; and the Accessory port on the back has a pin dedicated to PTT. It would seem to me that 4 different input locations are enough and that the paddle/key inputs should NOT be used for a PTT function. Even though we've been assured that there is plenty of memory available in the K3 for doing wonderful things, it is finite. 73, Ken K3IU ~ Dr. Werner Furlan wrote: hi all, On 27 Apr 2008 at 8:45, mark roz wrote: It would be nice to be able to use CW paddle plugged into paddle jack. Re: [Elecraft] High Accuracy TCXO
Sorry you feel that way, Steve. The K3TCXO-1 that came with my K3 has a calibration/test sheet that clearly indicates that it is accurate to within 1 ppm. This has nothing to do with firmware. The setup procedure in the manual that is currently not usable is the procedure that will make the TCXO-1 accurate to within 0.5 ppm by use of firmware. Of course, I could be 100% wrong, but I don't think so. From the K3 Order page... Re: [Elecraft] K60XV Builder Alert: TUNE mode issues with KAT2
wayne burdick wrote: If you have a K60XV (60 m/XVTR interface) installed in your K2, *and* a KAT2 (internal ATU), you may notice two problems in TUNE mode. These only occur if you're using the low-power (0 dBm) transverter interface on the K60XV. Both have simple work-arounds: 1. If the KAT2 is in either of its autotune modes (AUTO or ALT), the holding the TUNE button drops power output to 0.2 milliwatts maximum in low-power (LP) mode. You can override this behavior by simply holding DISPLAY along with TUNE. You can also use the menu to change configure the KAT2 for any mode other than AUTO or ALT, but this is less convenient. Same thing happens if there is a KAT100 attached. Power our says .20 LP when Tune is pressed and ATU in Auto. 2. In some cases the LM358 op-amp on the KAT2 can load down the K60XV's RF detector (at the emitter of Q2), preventing the K60XV from developing a full 0 dBm (1 milliwatt) signal at the low-level transverter OUT jack. To correct this, change R6 on the KAT2 from 47 ohms to 470 ohms. This will have a negligible effect on normal use of the KAT2. With the KAT100, I was able to initially get full 1 mw out as indicated on the K2 (ATU in CAL). Over a period of about 15 seconds the power out dropped to about 0.95 LP indicated. 73, Ken Wagner K3IU ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft You must subscribe to post.
