Yes, I forgot the KPA500 powers up in Operate. It is the only Amp I own

I will mention it to Elecraft when I chat with them later today and suggest
the default should be the other way around.

I suspect this is a very common mistake for ops who sometimes use the amp
and sometimes operate barefoot. I thought the KPA500 was designed to
protect against that user error. Seems I was wrong.

Suggest you contact support for schematics. Unless their policy has

Thanks for the tip Ken. Unfortunately that was already set to PH.R SW-.
Changing it to + definitely didn't mute the speakers!

The issue we're seeing is the speakers are not completely muted. You can
still hear audio coming out of the speakers, nowhere near as loud, but it's
still there. Unlike the built in speaker which is completely muted under the
same circumstances.

You did prompt me to try a regular speaker in the SPKRS jack
(non-amplified). Interestingly there is NO audio heard when SPKR+PH = YES.
This leads me to believe there is 'some' audio at the jack, enough to be
amplified. Why, that I can't answer, maybe something to do with input
impedance of the amplified speakers?

Anyway, just another data point in something that's not a big issue but
makes for good discussion.

My question is has anyone who owns an old K3 experienced any other tin

the RX and TX pass through the amp as expected.

It seems to me that it thinks PA Key is enabled all of the time, so
when I switch to operate it is in TX mode immediately. I do not see a

Any idea of what is going on?

may cause damage to the transformers windings. The head of the screw closest

the transformer is up against the bumpers equally and installed per the

My plan was to take this amp on DXpeditions but it appears it would not last
one trip before the winding breaks through and touches the screw.

Would anyone know if there is some preventative measures to keep the
transformer safe? It would be a shame to find the transformer/amp damage
only to have it explode as you plug it in upon arrival to some rare DX place.

At the very least these two screws should be flat head screws and have
 countersunk holes.

 Suggestions?

appears to be a power spike on the wattmeter on the KPA500 from 500 to
700 watts for one or two dits, then drop back down to 500 watts. The
fault light does not flicker or come on when this happens. This never
happens when switching to 250Hz. It consistently happens when going from
2.8 to 1.8 and from 1.8 to 400. All filters are from Elecraft and are 8

Have others seen this and is it normal?
Is there a problem with this?
Is it an actual spike in power from the K3 resulting in a spike from the

Apparently orders are not being filled starting 4/15 as stated on the

The momentary dropout that bugs me is the one that occurs when you turn on
Sub. As everybody knows, listening to the DX on VFO A and the pileup on VFO
B is the key to working a lot of DX with modest power and a wire. The K3 is
the best at this in many ways, but it has the unfortunate habit of
observing a moment of silence when the Sub button is pushed. I like to turn
Sub off at times to get rid of the 3db splitter loss, and every time I turn
it back on to check the pile the radio exhibits this annoying trait. Can
this be fixed in firmware someday?

make a purchase decision before getting at least some warm fuzzies about the
 KPA-500 pricing and availability.

 Been looking at a lot of new and used tube based amplifiers and 1KW tuners;
getting the sense that I could spend upwards of $1500 for anything decent.
If the KPA-500 is going to sell for close to that figure, or less of course,
I can probably keep my money stashed and wait a few more months. It sure
would look nice next to the K3 P3.

If, however, the KPA-500 is going to cost much more than $1500, I will
 probably go the tube route.

So, what I'm hoping to get from someone in the know is a ballpark figure
on the KPA-500. I assume the antenna tuner is built in, and not an
additional cost. If that isn't the case, then knowing the ATU cost would
 also be helpful.

All one has to do is go to the CONFIG menus, select the parameter, and

That's pretty short.

While the advice is official, there is not much point in posting set
to factory defaults unless you include what those numbers are in your
 text.

Otherwise the reader has to do the research (Google, site search,
thumb manual looking for numbers...) to determine what the factory
 defaults are.

Digging around on the web site, etc, will defeat a lot of readers. Not
because your site is trashy (it's not), or the manual is bad (it's
not), or K3 users are stupid (they're not), but because in human
evolution web-searching was never the reason why one did or didn't
live long enough to pass on one's genes to one's children. That and
such things as RTFM were not Darwinian criteria. More than that...

Human behavior studies in information assimilation on all kinds of us
regular folks show over and over that on average humans don't do well
at drilling down in information, become quickly bored, tired,
irritated, frustrated, confused just to name a few. And while they may
doggedly stay with such tasks to keep a job to feed and house the
family, teeth-grinding information drilling to find the default
numbers does not cut it in our pastime activities. Moreover, even
relating to work, studies with competent well-thought-of clerical
personnel showed that errors, misreads, no-finds, and nasty remarks
increased dramatically with the number of steps to fetch, or with any
uncertainty as to the source, appearance or presentation of the needed
 information.

Given the amount of attention, confusion and complaints related to
noise and AGC, wouldn't it make sense to identify your default
CONFIG:AGCxxx setting numbers with a dEF to the left of the number
when VFO A rolls over it, so that when the folks from Mount Aptos say
to use the default AGC, that can be easily set and/or confirmed and/or
returned to without needing to dig up the numbers somewhere?

I believe that the boot up detection is only to determine whether the
jumper is installed, not whether it has been activated by a strong
signal. I really don't see a need to report that the jumper is installed
on the display since one would surely remember if the jumper has been

It does work, by the way. I put my K2 on a nearby antenna and keyed it
with power at about 1 watt while the K3 was listening on a nearby

G'morning, Gents:

An interesting problem reared its head this morning when I turned on the
K3 with 3.25/2.21 installed.

When I switched mode to SSB (either USB or LSB) this morning there was
no audio output. S-meter action continued to indicate input and all
other modes produced normal audio output. It has worked fine in this
mode because I was checking the Auto-Notch feature using SSB modes
before this. I disconnected everything from the backplane except the
power cord and the antenna. Still no audio on SSB modes. I went through
all the CONFIG menu items and everything was as before. I particularly
looked at the Squelch items and squelch was set to FM Only with level as
00. When I checked CONFIG:PB CTRL, even though I had set it for
Shift=.05 while in CW mode, it indicates Shift=.01 when in SSB mode. I
am unable to change that so it is .05 in SSB mode. Not sure if that is
pertinent or not but it doesn't seem right.

I did a complete reload of all the 3.25 firmware files and still no SSB
audio. The problem presents itself on both the main and the sub Rx. I
checked the filter setup using the K3 Utility and there have been no
changes, i.e., appropriate filters are still set up for SSB. SSB
Transmission is normal when monitored in my K2.

I decided to regress to 3.23/2.19 and see what happened. No change...
still no audio in SSB modes.

I regressed to 3.19/2.17 and the SSB mode audio is normal.

I removed the bottom front panel and inspected the resistor/diode
components and the jumper for Rx Front End Protection that I installed
per the Application notes for 3.25 changes. Everything looks and
measures correctly.

I have made all mods not excluded by serial number on this K3 (#202).

I just re-loaded 3.25/2.21 and still no SSB Rx audio.

I just remembered that I had done a backup of the configuration 3 days
ago using the K3 Utility, after installing 3.25. After running the
Restore program in the K3 Utility just now to restore that backup, I
have audio on both SSB modes. And... the CONFIG: PB CTRL now indicates
Shift=.05 in SSB mode and .01 in CW and Data modes.

So whatever happened overnight was corrected by restoring the last
backup. Of course, I haven't a clue as to what was wrong and what in the
restore fixed it, but K3 #202 is back to normal ops now.

since this is a DXpedition that plans to operate split almost 100% of

As best I can tell, the only way for him to accomplish that on the K3 is

 Subject: [Elecraft] K3 external speakers

The following may well be obvious to most, but I know of at least three K3
owners who've been caught by plugging mono plugs into the (stereo) speaker
 jack.

There is a gotcha involved in the use of external speakers with the K3.
It's addressed indirectly on page 20 of the D2 version of the manual in the
2nd paragraph under PHONES when it reads ... if you use a stereo plug at
the external speaker jack but is easily glossed over by the reader.

Many / most monaural external speakers have a MONAURAL plug on their cords.
DON'T plug one of these (monaural) plugs into the speaker jack. It's
configured for stereo and the sleeve of the mono plug will short the ring
portion of the stereo jack and thereby short one channel of audio. I ...
along with several others ... have experienced a failure of the audio
amplifier IC on the front panel board due to one channel being shorted by
the sleeve of a monaural plug. It seems to take many hours of operation
under this condition to cause the IC to fail ... over a year in mine and
another's case. The IC is -NOT- an easy change!

Just remember that one audio channel is on the tip and the other is on the
ring of the plug and connect speakers in this manner using -only- a stereo
plug. My particular trap was forgetting that using a stereo Y merely
moved the trap six inches away from the jack. (;-)

As others have pointed out, speakers from the two-radio field are good
choices, and the CB isle at truck stops usually sell nice speakers. Mine
are Barjan 320-701's. Radio Scrap 21-549B's are OK, too.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 PTT in SSB with CW-Key?

2008-04-28 Thread Ken Wagner K3IU
I would like to add my opinion to this issue... just in case anyone is
keeping score :-) .

I would recommend that this NOT be incorporated into the K3. There are
at least 4 places that I'm aware of on the existing K3 where PTT can be
manually asserted while in SSB mode. On the Front Panel one may tap the
XMIT button; the MIC connector has a PTT pin for access; on the back
panel there is an input jack for an external switch for asserting PTT;
and the Accessory port on the back has a pin dedicated to PTT. It would
seem to me that 4 different input locations are enough and that the
paddle/key inputs should NOT be used for a PTT function. Even though
we've been assured that there is plenty of memory available in the K3
for doing wonderful things, it is finite.

Has anyone ever felt the need to ground their K2, and if so, where did you
connect the ground wire to the K2?
Thanks

I wanted to look at the help file and instructions of v1.1.4.1. (no K3
attached)

Clicking on the ICON doesn't open a screen. It does start a process
according to task manager.
Click on the ICON again and the utility screen does open.

This results in two instances of K3UTIL.EXE running.

Closing the screen kills one. The other never goes away. If you try to
close WIN-XP, XP tells you the K3UTIL needs time to close You have to
kill it at that level.

Should this be happening?

Re: [Elecraft] KAT3 question

2008-04-02 Thread Ken Wagner K3IU
Wayne published something a while back that if you push the tune
button very quickly after the first tuning stops, it will try again with
another algorithm that might result in a lower tuned SWR. This from the
release notes for firmware 1.75.

 * ATU MATCHING Improved: If you tap ATU TUNE a second time on the same
band/antenna within 5 seconds, a more extensive search is used that
may result in a
lower SWR. The original (fast) algorithm is unchanged. Further
improvements are planned.

2.5 with my K2 ATU. The K2 is using ALT tune to get there taking a
long time. I can understand that this could be a matter of chance,
since the tuners use discrete components, rather than adjustable
ones. I don't find much info on the KAT3 in the Installation
Instructions or the K3 Owner's Manual. Sheet 3 of the KAT3
Installation Manual, Introduction, says Complete details for using
the KAT3 are included in the KXV3 Owner's manual. I can't find a
KXV3 Owner's Manual on the Elecraft site, only the Installation
Instructions and I don't have a KXV3. Do I need a KXV3 to use my
KAT3? Does the KAT3 have the equivalent of ALT tune on the K2? The
KAT3 seems to give up after a few seconds, while the K2 tries real
hard to get a good match. I can prune my end fed antenna but I may be
missing something here and would like to know.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 power supply question

They are probably not providing assembled for the same reason that they
don't provide it with the K2/100... it's a kit. It is NOT necessary to
buy the expensive crimping tool. There are instructions contained in
each KIT describing how the connectors can be assembled without using a
crimp. They can be soldered and if the directions are followed, it is
perfectly useful and reliable.

With the factory assembled K3, I believe that the APP connector is
attached to the power cable.

future firmware revision to further reduce rise time via a menu entry.

But the schematics of the RF Board Rev. A4 (Sheet 3 of 4), dated
9/19/07, show C222 as being 0.1 already. The instructions recommend
removing the existing 0.1 and replacing it with another 0.1 !! Surely
to reduce the rise time the existing capacitor should be shunted with
another one.

Or do Rev A RF boards have a lower value for C222 than that shown on
the schematic?

low (half the peak power or less) SSB transmit gain. It takes 28 watts in tune
to develop 1 Kw on my Alpha 99 (which has a peak reading meter), and it takes
70 watts to develop this same output on SSB. I am well aware of the difference
between average and peak readings and how they are derived. The solution to
this problem does not lie there. My Omni VII does not require additional power

I hope this can be corrected in a future firmware upgrade. Roy Morris W4WFB

I’ve somehow managed to set up my K3, so that when I tune the main tuning

Not sure how I’ve done this, but would like to stop it?? I’ve looked in the
manual but can’t find anything on this..

Unless I misunderstand what is published, the firmware for the 1 ppm
TCXO is only to allow it to be tightened up to 0.5 ppm, and does not
affect the basic 1 ppm TCXO. I have the 1 ppm TCXO and even though I
haven't done any scientific calibrations, I'd say it has a 1 ppm
capability... or pretty darn close to that.

Re: [Elecraft] High Accuracy TCXO

2008-03-04 Thread Ken Wagner

Sorry you feel that way, Steve.

The K3TCXO-1 that came with my K3 has a calibration/test sheet that
clearly indicates that it is accurate to within 1 ppm. This has nothing
to do with firmware. The setup procedure in the manual that is currently
not usable is the procedure that will make the TCXO-1 accurate to within
0.5 ppm by use of firmware. Of course, I could be 100% wrong, but I
don't think so.

From the K3 Order page...

KTCXO3-1 TCXO +/-1ppm (f/w corr. to 0.5ppm)

Ken K3IU

S Sacco wrote:

The setup for the 1 ppm TCXO is not enabled; I'm not sure what that
means vis-a-vis the stability. I've only had my K3 for a short time,
and haven't attempted to monitor the stability.

Bottom line: a product is being actively advertised and sold, but the
buyer is not told that they will not be able to use it as advertised.

Glad you're seeing excellent stability. Perhaps I'll play with that,
and montor WWV over an evening

received K3/10 kit on Feb 28, Ser#501.

Assembly went well. I have assembled two K2's and a K1 with no
problems. I used an anti static mat and wrist band throughout assembly.

Problem#1

Upon power up, the K3 will not recognize the KAT3. I receive the ERR
IO1 msg. I removed the KAT3, powered up and did not get the ERR IO1
msg. Reinstalled the KAT3, power up, get the ERR IO1 msg. I went
through the configuration steps, no help. I tried switching between
ant 12, and received a ATU not installed msg. Assume a faulty KAT3?

Problem#2

This one is a booger. I have a horrible S8 to S9 plus noise (sounds
like line noise), at various places throughout the 1.8 to at least 25
mhz. It shows up on the 160 thru 40 hams bands, misses 30M, shows up
again on 20M and 17M, misses 15M, shows up on 12M, clean on 10 6M.
Using a non metallic tuning tool, if I put pressure on the little
mixer board I can cause it to go away or change. The sensitive area is
the component, looks like a transistor, three leads, that looks like a
pop rivet in the center. lower left on the board when looking in from
the front. I can't read a component number on the board. If I put
pressure on this component I can cause the noise to go away, or shift
off the freq I'm listening to. I removed, inspected, and reinstalled
the mixer board a couple of times, no change. The noise must be being
generated prior to the roofing filters because changing the filters
has effect on the noise, DSP does too.

There are no external antenna connections, the only connection to the
K3 is the power. The PS is a Astron and it powers my K2's and K1, so
it's not PS noise.

If you want, I can phone you and let you listen to the noise.

Did I get the lemon?

You seem to be correct on your price assessment. It is a shame that
such a great radio goes so cheap. I have built several and I enjoy
building but just am not willing to lose 20- 30% per kit. There was a
time when it was easy to get the kit price for a newly built kit. Just

Re: [Elecraft] K60XV Builder Alert: TUNE mode issues with KAT2

2004-06-09 Thread Ken Wagner

wayne burdick wrote:

If you have a K60XV (60 m/XVTR interface) installed in your K2, *and*
a KAT2 (internal ATU), you may notice two problems in TUNE mode. These
only occur if you're using the low-power (0 dBm) transverter interface
on the K60XV. Both have simple work-arounds:

1. If the KAT2 is in either of its autotune modes (AUTO or ALT), the
holding the TUNE button drops power output to 0.2 milliwatts maximum
in low-power (LP) mode. You can override this behavior by simply
holding DISPLAY along with TUNE. You can also use the menu to change
configure the KAT2 for any mode other than AUTO or ALT, but this is
less convenient.

Same thing happens if there is a KAT100 attached. Power our says .20 LP
when Tune is pressed and ATU in Auto.

2. In some cases the LM358 op-amp on the KAT2 can load down the
K60XV's RF detector (at the emitter of Q2), preventing the K60XV from
developing a full 0 dBm (1 milliwatt) signal at the low-level
transverter OUT jack. To correct this, change R6 on the KAT2 from 47
ohms to 470 ohms. This will have a negligible effect on normal use of
the KAT2.

With the KAT100, I was able to initially get full 1 mw out as
indicated on the K2 (ATU in CAL). Over a period of about 15 seconds the
power out dropped to about 0.95 LP indicated.
