Elecraft CW Net Report for September 11th & 12, 2011 Good Evening, The nets went very well today. Although twenty was not as long as normal forty meters more than made up for it. I just noticed the number of check ins on each is pretty balanced. After counting I find it is exactly balanced :) It was nice to hear so well on forty meters again. The normal noise did not show up until very late in the net. Now that the sun has become more active and the season is beginning to change the bands are changing. The new time for the second net helped a great deal but soon the sun will be down for the it. When that happens I'll move the net forward again. The weather seems to be getting milder in the Midwest. Temperatures were in the 80s today. Here it was hotter than the stations checking in from California until Brian came along. I wonder what Steve would have mentioned from Georgia. I got his call sign but the QSB got him before I could work him again. Maybe he got some rain from the Gulf storm system. Last I heard they needed rain. Well the same is true here after a week of hot weather and about a month since the last rain. Only the foggy mornings are providing precipitation. Good Evening, A long hot day. Today was the hottest day of the year at 88 degrees. I am not sure what it got to in the valleys this is warm enough. Fire danger is rising quickly. In the Cascades there are a number of large fires with more being added each week. Lightning strikes are causing them and they are fairly remote so it is not easy to get to them. Luckily that also means there are few houses or structures around. Just miles of forest, dry forest, with a lot of fuel ready to keep the fire going. Wind gusts are high enough so the fire breaks need to be made very wide. It is helpful to have a river or highway to help but the fire locations are too remote for that. I am glad the deer hunters here are mostly loggers so they know how to deal with any cigarette butts to make sure they are out. One good thing is that the temperatures will get back into the low 60s and high 50s in only a few days. One more day of 80 degree weather followed by a day of 70 degree temperatures and then into the lower temperatures again. I'll be burning a fire to stay warm in only a few days. All the talk about Heathkit manuals has gotten me thinking. Many of the things I have learned about procedural methods were influenced by them. Written procedures for chemistry and physics classes. Log journals for engineering and scientific notebooks I have kept over the years. And the biggest one is the decomposition of modular structures down to discrete, stepwise methods of construction. I can thank Heathkit manuals and the Forth language for the way I write software. Ten years of writing code in Forth from the late '70s onward followed by many more years of C and other languages are all influenced by those manuals I used as a kid. The Forth language only reinforced the good habits I had learned early on. The stepwise deconstruction allowed me to factor the code into modules, or words in Forth, and then examine them. Once I saw general patterns I could refactor my code into reusable chunks which made writing the next application easier. In Forth once you have written the first code for a project in a certain regime you are extending the language such that it is simpler to write the second app in that environment. By the time you write the third it is just a matter of reusing the words you have already written while only creating a few news ones which are application specific. Fun way to work. Writing working code almost as fast as you can think. Testing the new words is simple too. No test harness just type in the inputs and then the word (function) and out pops the answer. Propagation was good this week but, then, I have not tested them today. The CMEs started striking last night so I will assume the bands are pretty noisy right now. But once the string of CMEs stop whacking the ionosphere we will have much better propagation for a week or so. Maybe forty meters will support longer distance connections of more than one hop in radius. Or twenty will go for three hops instead of just two. We can always hope. When my dad got out of school after the war engineers were required to work on the factory floor until they got a promotion. Then a while at foreman until the other engineers thought their training period was up. My father was a metallurgical engineer (MetE 49) who graduated from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology on the GI Bill. He always told me his time on the foundry floor trained him more as an engineer than did all his class room experience. The theory was great but without the practical aspects of working with materials it was hard to put into practice. My father was a green sand molding expert and later worked developing plasma coating tools, foamed metals, and a variety of non-ferrous alloys. 73, Kevin. I think Heathkits' greatest contribution to amateur electronics builders were their fine manuals. I built my first Heathkit at age 9 and made it through OK. However, they should have added a first aid section in the back of the manual for those of us just getting started with hot soldering irons :) But I eventually learned how not to burn myself. Their manuals influenced the way I viewed kit building and step by step procedures from then on. When I started reading the manual for my K2 I realized I had run into another Heathkit builder just by following the procedures. Thanks Heathkit for all the fine gear and for the memories, Kevin. Eleven more contacts in my hour of effort this morning. 40, 20, and 15 meters each gave me contacts. 15 was noisy but I got one Ohio station through just fine. I will try 7030 or 7040 today to see if that area elicits more contacts than does 7060 kHz. 14060 kHz seems to provide 90% or more of my contacts so I will spend more time there. Bands were not as good today. Weaker signals, lots of QSB, and QRN was high. The sun acted up and now things are noisy. But I worked four bands: forty, thirty, twenty, and fifteen meters alternating through them for an hour. Got six stations all on twenty meters. Good Evening, I have a fitting bit of video queued on the other computer waiting for me to finish this. Dr. Who is lying in a boat shaped rather like a small Viking craft. Quite apt because they are lighting him on fire and pushing him into the lake. He is dead. But Time Lords don't die; they regenerate. So I must wait to find out what is going on. Maybe Wayne has finally designed a TARDIS into one of his creations. I keep asking but he keeps putting me off. Is now the time? The twenty meter net was filled with decent signals but also a lot of QRN and fading. Then, about 3/4 of the way through the net, the propagation changed. N0AR called a CQ from Minnesota but had no luck. His first bounce must not have landed in North America. Thanks for the attempt Scott. However, I did get a relay from Mike of a much closer station: K6PJV. I could hear him but only at ESP levels. Thanks Mike! While conversing with Dale a contest started right on top of us. A very unusual contest because they appeared not to be able to hear me at all. Either during my response to them or in response to my CQ. Oh well, it did make life much tougher. I did think N6MA was responding. His message fit with my question as did his timing but then he went away. However, since he did get his call copied and he made even a partial effort he is logged QNI to the net. I have run my K3 from batteries for many years. Since I first got it in fact. I do have a power supply just in case but 4 Trojan T-105s keep its fire lit. I do not experience any thumping, whooshing, ringing, or other noises. Except one: the relay clicking in. But, I expect that. It would be nice if I could get it to sound like the TARDIS whizzing about. Kevin. Good Evening, A fairly chilly week requiring a continuous fire to stay warm. Luckily the temperature has risen again so I get an extension to my two week long summer season. The forecast is for another week of sunny weather with temperatures reaching as high as 81 degrees. In Portland it is much warmer. Luckily I have not been to Portland in a few years. But even west of the West Hills it is warmer than here. I try to keep my visits to the lowlands short and during the morning hours. That way I won't melt. Propagation was good the few times I got on twenty meters but that was early in the week. Hopefully all is well with both 20 and 40 meters. Tomorrow we get to test that hypothesis. Before dinner I was out behind the house eating a few thimbleberries. Emphasis on few :( The cold weather prevented many of the blossoms from being pollinated. Now that it is dry the few which did get pollinated are not growing well. I have watered them but they don't respond like domestic species do. I'll try more watering over the next week and hope for the best. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. Good Evening, Both nets were not too bad. QRN was bad on 20 meters but less bad on 40 meters. I was very surprised to hear Dave check in. He told us there was not much damage and he was OK. He was weaker than normal but considering a hurricane had just passed it is good he was on the air at all. The second net started OK when I got Brian. Then I got a CQer from Arkansas who could not hear my calling on frequency, KR4RA. Since no one was answering his CQ (that he could hear that is) I waited. But when he did not quit I moved the net to 7045.5 kHz. I explained what I was doing and where I was going so when I called my first CQ there were immediate responses. The QRN was less but Dave made it through from CT again. He gave me a 339 so it was short but it was good to know he was OK from the center of the path. Good Evening, Another week of summer weather. It is nice to finally have warm days and not so cool nights. Almost a month since I last needed to heat the house too. Looks like next week will have some rain and cold days but mostly it will be high 60s and sunny. Summer was late in arriving but it feels nice. Now the fire danger is rising until the rain. An inch of rain would be nice right now. Fire danger would go down and the berry crops would enjoy a shower. The later start time for the forty meter net worked well. This week the time for it will remain at 0100z. Remember the frequencies are just guidelines. The actual frequency depends upon whether I can hear anyone on the main frequency when I get started. If I did then I will move up or down by 0.5 kHz until I find an open frequency. My normal order for alternates is up 0.5 kHzz then down 0.5 kHz. If neither of those works then it is up 1 kHz and followed by down 1 kHz all from the original starting point. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for August 21st & 22nd, 2011
Good Evening, I am glad I moved the forty meter net to one hour later. It worked out very well. All the way into CT and TX and MN. Much better than just CA and OR. I did get a TX to TX relay though. Probably ground wave to Dave but I was hearing John at 559 so I could copy him along with Dave so there was little to relay except my responses. Poor Dave, K1THP, in Connecticut. He tried checking in during this relay but when I finally was able to call him QSB had taken him away. He will be surprised to find his name on the 40 m list too :) The twenty meter net was much like last week. I seem to have gained some local noise which has not changed much in two weeks. I wonder if they are working on the radio towers above me and that is causing the noise? Other than that there is little equipment close enough to bother me. Unless it is some grounding issue with my well's pump. Doesn't sound like any computer generated trash. Or I could simply blame the sun and be done with it :) If these conditions hold on both bands I will be actively beating the bushes for a more permanent relay station. Maybe that guy in Minnesota could be convinced to call a CQ or two :) But ad hoc relays are always welcome if you had not figured that out yet. Don, W3FPR, wants me to send mountain lions to North Carolina. I wonder what UPS or USPS would think of one crated and shipped? Have to sedate the poor kitty and warn Don about one very annoyed and large cat in a crate. But being an engineer I am sure he would figure out a way to free it without losing more than a couple fingers. I have boxes of those 5 1/4 diskettes plus a few 8 inchers. Everything I wrote in the '70s and most of what I wrote in the '80s is now unavailable to me. Just the musty printouts give me a trail of provenance. Some of the algorithms I created back then would still be of value but I cannot get to them. An acoustic analysis program I wrote to simulate the noise pollution around a surface phosphate mine would be nice to have. It was fun to write within the confines we had then but the transition to C and Pascal made life much simpler. Variables with actual descriptive names were a boon to getting the work done faster and the debugging went more quickly in the new modular forms. To this day I am influenced by the integer variables in Fortran: i, j, k. Forth forced me to think in functional decomposition. I do not miss the confines of 65 kB but it was nice to know the wiring of the entire computer and how each bit of the rudimentary OSes of the day fit together. Getting to the I/O lines was much easier then too. Now to dig out my CP/M box and see if it still boots from those 8 inch floppies :) 73, Kevin. Good Evening, Unbelievable weather today; 77 degrees and more warm weather coming. A few sunny days with 68 degrees followed by a few more days at 70 or better. Maybe summer is starting. A little late but that's OK. The nighttime lows will also rise, up into the mid and high 50s. That will be nice. I can open the windows and not worry about it getting so cold I cannot sleep. I went for a hike a few days ago to check the berries. No luck. I found one but the rest had gone to fill the bellies of some very happy bears and coyotes. The meter reader stopped by yesterday and told me of some more mountain lions. Seems he can't find many deer in his normal hunting area. The lions appear to have eaten them. No wonder I am not seeing very many of them here. We are in a high cycle for those cats and the deer population is dropping off in response. The bears have also cycled upward so any berries I thought of eating will have to be next year. But they are shy so I can still find a few on my land. Propagation was decent yesterday. Some local noise but not a problem for decent copy. Some QSB but then the sun has been actively tossing stuff at us. While it does improve propagation it creates some noise and a little flutter too. Makes a contact an interesting roller coaster ride. Since 40 meters has not elicited many check ins over the last month or so I am changing the time for it. I announced it during the net last week but that does not help much for those of you who could not hear me. So, the forty meter net will be held one hour later until the time change this fall. Monday 0100z or Sunday 6 PM PDT. That gives me a lot of time between nets for dinner and chores. The net report will also come out later too. Hopefully by 9 PM instead of 8 PM. I hope this helps gather a few more people. I have been told the band opens up about half an hour before this net will begin so maybe we can work further to the east. We shall see. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. I will turn the net over to you for a few minutes so you can call areas in my skip zone. It sure would prove helpful to those I cannot reach directly. Good Evening, There was a little noise but the stations I heard were quite loud. Except for Fred. Then he tuned and blasted in. I missed the explanation since my ears were still ringing but found out he was running 500 watts from his K3. Once again weather reports were of much warmer weather than I am having. I read about a year without a summer but now I have lived one. While the rest of the US and Canada have had a heat wave I have had chilly to down right cold weather. So I built a greenhouse to get some vegetables to eat during the fall. Even though the season is short it is normally good enough for peas, beans, and lettuce. For peppers and corn I need the hothouse. Propagation was not great on 40 meters once again. While trying to hear Phil, who should have been a fair contact from Oregon, I decided to move the forty meter net later in the day by one hour. So next week it will be at 0100z instead of z. Hopefully the band will wake up to a wider area before that time. I'll post it again next week during my announcement but I wanted folks to know beforehand that they may have a much better chance of checking in rather than the bust it has been the last few months. The net times will change again when we go through the Daylight Savings time change again later in the year. I remember listening to shortwave as the sun was sliding off its peak in 1959. I was reading about IGY which had happened only a couple years before and found out much about the geophysical properties of earth. A lot more exciting than reading my dad's metallurgy textbooks :) I was probably the only kid in first grade who could spell molybdenum and manganese. The history of the metals were fun but then you got into the crystallography of them which put me to sleep. It took a few years to develop a taste for those parts of his texts. Good Evening, Another very chilly week with one more on the way. Folks are already talking about how much it feels like Fall. Next week some days won't get into the 60s so it is cooling off. Not that it ever got hot. 77 was the hottest day all year. But only five days in the 70s is not a summer. Oh well, there is always next year. There have been more bear around and there were signs of at least one mountain lion. That may be why I have not heard many coyotes around :) The grouse and quail populations were very low this year due to the cold and wet hatching season. I wonder if that means the rodent populations will be low too since there will be little prey for the coyotes and bobcats and mountain lions to eat? As far as my backyard, crawlspace and house are concerned there are a ton of rodents out there. Propagation was strongly effected by the sun this week. There were so many flares and CMEs that I was having a hard time hearing for the background noise. QRN was strong from Tuesday onward. Hopefully the ionosphere has regenerated and the influx of ions has slowed to a dull roar. That will help on twenty meters but I think only the onset of Autumn will help on forty meters. I did make one contact beyond the Cascades and Sierras last week so that is a good sign. Maybe I'll reach back into the plains again soon. The sun is rising later and setting earlier so that helps. I'll start checking 80 meters again soon. It is a good band for working up and down the Coast from Northern California and up into British Columbia. I get to meet my neighbors that way. Good Evening, Two decent nets today. Twenty meters was fairly open and I could hear most folks really well. One guy from the Northwest Territories was booming in while only running 10 watts, VE8RT. Two were ESP but I dug them out: K0DTJ and WB3AAL. Ron was much worse than Brian but I got his call twice and a few other words. Other than that it was just a slight tone under the noise level. Forty meters was noisier than it normally is on 40 but I got N0TA in Colorado well enough to copy most of what he sent. That has not happened in quite a while. Lately 40 meters has been an Oregon California only band for me. Maybe as we slide to the late part of summer it will grow stronger. I have noticed lately the sun is rising later. I awaken in the grey of dawn instead of to the sun peaking over the mountain. It is also setting earlier. Weather has been monotonous lately. Pretty much the same high temperatures each day and the same lows at night. Not quite 70 and right around 50. For once I did not have the coldest daytime temperature. Brian came in with a 53 and foggy report. Even the folks in Canada have been warmer than it is here. So I took them for a walk. I showed them the wind damage and all the trees yet to be cut. We ate a lot of berries along the way and kicked up a couple of deer. The deer only flushed a little way because it was around noon. They wanted to sleep so as we walked along we kicked them up again. I think they may be a little grumpy at me for awakening them :) It was a nice hike on a mild day. Then they left to scout a few other places on the mountain. Good Evening, On July 27, 2003 I worked the twelfth operator to check in to my little net. I was very green at the job, this being only the sixth time I had run them and was basically playing it by ear. Then Tom Hammond arrived. He helped me organize the nets a little differently and then called them for me as a relay station and then as an alternate net control. He worried in his emails to me that he was taking over. I told him not to pay attention to that thought and keep helping me get better. For many years he did so; assisting me in my skills at NCS and in CW. I had heard about the OzarkCon QRP get together and thought I could travel there. I told Tom and he was happy to find a way to get there. I flew to Oklahoma City to meet my mentor KL7V, Sam Binkley (now N4SAM). He had been helping me with CW since I could barely spell 'cat'. He had taken me from a very shaky 5 wpm to over 20 wpm in daily hour long skeds which made my hands shake and my brain weary. He graciously welcomed me into his home for the night and then we (Sam, his wife Marijo, and I) drove to Joplin, Missouri the next day. I had just taken my gear to the room after checking in and saw a strangely familiar silhouette which gave me a clue that Tom was there. I walked up to him and started a conversation like we had known each other for years; well, because we had. Then Jeri gave me a hug in greeting and we were off. She was about to tell me something when Tom shushed her. He wrote a quick email to Wayne who gave his permission. That is when Tom told me about the K3. The first person to know about it at OzarkCon. He gave me many of the design details on a flash drive. I still have those somewhere and most of the details came true. For the next couple days I tagged along behind him and watched and listened. I sat down for a few presentations and was accosted by folks happy to meet me. ECN does open doors for me. I also got to listen to a group of banjo pickers, fiddlers, and story tellers which made it hard to leave. Sam found me almost asleep sitting in a chair leaned against the wall as the folks played on to tell me he was off to bed. He knew right where to find me. I had a great weekend there at OzarkCon with the two most important mentors I have had in amateur radio. I got to know Tom face to face as well as I had known him on the air and via email or phone conversations. He was just as great in person as he was via the other mediums. Listening to him teach was also enlightening and I have used those lessons while doing my own teaching for the local ECOM group. Thank you Tom Hammond for all the good times, for all the lessons, and for all the fine memories. Thank you for helping me with ECN for so many years. Telling you that you will be missed does not plumb the depth to which you have touched my life. Thank you old friend. -30? What about the really cold temperatures you get in late January and early February? I am from Wisconsin and it hit -65 one night. It was rather brisk out to say the least. You may want to bring the T1 inside at that point and keep it warm. I doubt the T1 is built to milspec standards nor does it use milspec parts. Below -20F you may experience some thermal contraction issues which are different for each material in the gadget. That 'could' break a few connections. But I will wait until the empiricists arrive for some stories of how the T1 survived a real winter. VY 73, Kevin. Good Evening, Neither band was as good as it was last week. That is not saying I did not get checkins but they were not as strong. I also got odd weather reports from the South. Triple digit temperatures? Hmmm... must be something in the water. I awoke to a very crisp bedroom since I had left my window open all night. I put on a sweatshirt which I am still wearing. When I walked outside it smelled nice but was not warm. However, propagation was decent if not spectacular. DX award goes to Dave in Connecticut who had some QSB and a 339 signal. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Announcement
A very late Good Evening to you, It has finally happened, I have gone a full week without having to start a fire to stay warm. It was chilly many times but I found another way to keep the house warm until the sun heated the roof enough. Today the temperature rose above 70 again and I think for the next couple of days it was stay in the low 70s before creeping back down. It dried out enough for me to get into the forest and start cutting firewood. I have enough wood remaining to get me half way through the winter unless I have to start more fires this summer. What a strange year it has been. I hear stories about how hot it is but I have yet to experience any day I would call hot. Last week's 77 on Sunday was the hottest I have gotten all year and that would be cool for most of you. Even though I have not had any rain this week I did get precipitation yesterday morning when the fog was so thick it caused the trees to rain on me. The roads were completely dry unless there was a tree directly overhead. The fog was so thick I could not get a connection to the tower where I get my Internet feed until 9 AM when the sun started to burn off the fog. Propagation yesterday was great at times and during the rest of the week it was good. I finally got the firmware upgrade zip file moved over to the K3 so now I can access the menu command which allows me to run APF. In fact I needed to do nothing to get it other than the firmware flash. When I checked the menu I found APF had already been chosen. I tested it and found it does work rather well if you can handle the ringing it adds to the signal. Sounds much like closing the DSP filters down extremely tight which I assume is what it does with one button hold. But when the signals fall below the noise floor even a ringing signal is better than none at all. I expect it will come in handy during the fox hunts. I found it was unnecessary during my regular skeds this week because the signals had improved markedly from last week. Now that the sun is waning into autumn I expect propagation will keep improving. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. I will turn the net over to you for a few minutes so you can call areas in my skip zone. It sure would prove helpful to those I cannot reach directly. I think 160m to 2m is asking a little much from a fractal patch antenna. But from 20m to 2m should be within the ballpark of a dedicated antenna designer. I don't think there is enough space on the rig for those lower bands. But some of the grad students at the U of New Mexico were working on just such things during my time there. Hi Dave, Is it going to be warm there? Today I have to start a fire because it is getting too cold to type. Ft. Tuthill sounds like fun. I have been to Flagstaff a few times. Once for the observatory and another time just to go camping. When I lived in Albuquerque Flagstaff was the place to go when it got hot. The smell of pine was very nice. Here in Oregon, well on the coast side anyway, we do not have pines. Just fir and cedar which smell quite different. The lodgepole pine don't begin until east of the Cascades. Have fun and remember there is a nice observatory nearby. Percival Lowell created the Flagstaff Observatory because of the very transparent skies in the area. Even though Pluto is no longer considered a planet :( Clyde Tombaugh used the Flagstaff Observatory's Clarke refractor to find it. http://www.bobspixels.com/kaibab.org/other/gc_oa_lo.htm The pine trees around the campground allow one to toss an antenna up with no problem. I used a home brew dipole from there with my K2. The batteries were recharged each day with the ever present, intense SW sunshine. I wish solar cells worked as well here! [Elecraft] I had a dream
I was musing today about my K3. I like the receive equalization feature. It allows me to boost the sidetone frequency and attenuate all the others. I thought further. Why can't the equalizer attenuate everything except my sidetone? Say your sidetone is 600 Hz. Do you really need to hear 700 Hz or 500 Hz? By killing all the highs I can get rid of the ever present hiss. What would happen if I could only hear 600 +/- some epsilon Hz? Just a thought for a feature to put on the back burner and simmer a while, like chicken stock. 73, Kevin. Good Evening, Propagation was better this weekend. There was a contest to avoid on twenty meters but I got a number of folks checked in there. Some QSB to fight but mostly lots of rabid contesters. On forty meters I had one op with a new 500 watt amp from Elecraft. Woo it was loud! I kept copying his call as AE6II but Dale disabused me of this notion. Must have been an artifact of my eardrums touching :) Phil was quite loud too. He gave a report of 85 degrees at the beach. Up here it was a little cooler at 77 but even now it feels sticky. I had a towel under my arm while running both nets and need another one here to type. But the sticky weather will not last long. Tomorrow we are due for another spate of 50 degree temperatures and rain. We are getting summer in short day or two doses this year. Good Evening, The weather has gotten warmer. After tomorrow I will have had 5 days above 70 degrees. The forecast was for 80 degrees but that has been revised downward to 76. It got all the way up to 75 today with a lot of sun. Very warm now. However, on Monday the temperature goes down to the new Oregon summer normal of 52. Lots more rain for what should normally be the dry season. I did enjoy the day though and put this warm spell to good use. I now have a clean truck :) Not sure how long it is going to stay that way with the mud coming back but for today it is shiny. Propagation on twenty meters this week was good at times and weaker at others. Had to cut a few skeds short but got in at least 30 minutes each time. I ran an experiment on Wednesday testing every set of headphones and ear buds in the house. Instead of running the RF gain at maximum I could turn it down on one pair of ear buds to a setting around 12 o'clock. Much nicer. I rarely, if ever, touch the AF gain control. It is always set at max. A habit I picked up in the late '50s which has served me well ever since. By riding the RF gain I can eliminate a lot of the noise on the band. Then fiddling with NR and NB I can get a decent signal out of what was hard to copy. I had heard that the sunspot cycle was going up. What changed? I think it was easier to set up a sked during the solar doldrums than it is currently. Hmmm... Even though the weather is not showing it the flowers around me tell me it is past mid summer. The Turk's cap lilies are just now starting to bud at my elevation. The foxgloves have another six to ten inches to bloom until they are done. When they are finished blooming I better have a nice stack of wood because they presage cold weather. Hopefully the rain will stop soon so I can safely get out with my chainsaw and cut another six or seven cords. Using a chainsaw in the mud is not good but I may have to do it or freeze this winter. Good Evening, Twenty meters was very nice today. Twelve checkins over a period of about 40 minutes. Much nicer than last week's skunk :) Most of the signals were quite strong while a few of the eastern stations had some QSB. Some of the southern stations had fast and slow QSB which made life a little interesting. But hearing folks is much nicer than calling CQ while reading a magazine! Weather reports for the most part were much warmer. Only Brian down in California came close to my 55 degrees. I just went for a short walk and there was a warm breeze off the coast. Not warm enough to put out the fire but it is better than the rain and 45 degree nights I have had lately. Last night I had a mosquito flying around the keyboard but it was not very aggressive so it is warm enough for them. Good Evening, I keep hearing about warm weather and sunny skies but it is so rare here I can count the days over 70 degrees on the fingers on one hand with some left over. Most days this week I have had to start a fire to stay warm. Today it got all the way up to 56 degrees. Luckily the nightly lows are getting warmer too. Last night it was only 50 degrees instead of in the mid 40s. It has been raining for the better part of the last three days. I wish the dry season would get here and summer would start. However, not all is gloomy and cold. The propagation has become incrementally better. Enough so I could have a few longer skeds on 20 meters. The wish is for continued improvement. Maybe the sun will break with predictions and become more active. It would be best if the solar wind would kick into high gear and create numerous auroral displays. It is easier to deal with auroral flutter than it is to listen to a sparsely populated band. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for July 10th & 11th, 2011
Good Evening, What in the world has happened to propagation lately? On twenty meters before the net I scanned the band and found a number of folks on the air. But when I called the net I heard nothing for the entire time. First skunk for me in nine years. I guess it had to happen sometime but why did it not occur during the depth of the solar cycle? According to SpaceWeather.com there are many spots on the sun but they are not improving propagation. During the last few months I keep checking to see if my antenna has fallen down. Luckily forty meters was not as bad. It is still limited to the West Coast but at least I could hear a few folks. Only the first two on the following list however. The next two were relayed to me by Dale. I heard just a peep from Phil but nothing at all from Don. Guess San Diego is out of my range! I wonder where my twenty meter signal was landing? It sure seems to have missed North America. On to the lists => On 14050.5 kHz at 2200z: No stations heard. On 7045.5 kHz at z: K6PJV - Dale - CA - K3 - 1183 NK6A - Don - CA - K3 - 4569 NS7P - Phil - OR - K3 - 1826 AE6II - Don - CA I can only hope twenty meters improves over the week. I know the weather is going back to wet and chilly again. For the next week the highs will be in the 50s. I am glad I still have wood left for the stove! We had a few days of warm weather and sun. That was nice. 74 degrees one day felt hot. I am glad the thimbleberries were in full bloom for the warm days. The bees have been very active with them right outside my radio shack window. Hopefully a lot of berries will be set since these are my favorites. Year by year my patch of them grows larger. Good Evening, The weather has been quite changeable this week. High temperatures in the mid 70s, then the mid 50s, and now back in the mid 60s. Cloudy and cold with some rain to sunny and rather warm (apologies to those in warmer climes) in the mid 70s. But the changeable nature with the sun and warmth at times is a sign of the commencement of the dry season. Summer is starting very late this year; I hope it lasts until October. The sun brought out a large number of critters. Two days ago I saw a doe with two tiny fawns. A mile later another doe with a fawn. Then I saw a coyote and a covey of California quail. I have only seen one grouse thus far and it was a female ruffed grouse. No spruce grouse lately. I have one Steller's Jay which likes the sound of a fork on a plate. She enjoys leftover rice and the ends to my loaves of bread. Propagation on twenty meters was spotty this week. To the east it was poor but to California twenty meters worked rather well. Why has it become a local band? I heard a noise on my roof on Wednesday that sounded like a falling branch. The wind was high so I thought the tree was simply sloughing off dead limbs. When I went out for a look I saw the balun to my spare G5RV hung in a branch with the feedline lying on the roof. I have soldered that joint three times thus far and it looks like I get to practice soldering in the wind one more time. Luckily it is much warmer than the last time when there was snow on the roof. I should have used a torch that time but used my Weller soldering gun instead. I may need to drop that antenna for a more thorough refit. I was at a Red Cross EOC during a training drill as an ECOM operator. The stack of radios were on a folding leg table with an aisle for people to pass on the back side of all of those radios. When I walked into the radio room the first thing I saw were all the low voltage lines exposed to touch. I kept telling the folks in control how very dangerous this was. They all wore wedding bands and watches which would have welded themselves to the power lines. They did not seem to understand. "It is only 12 volts", they said. "But at how many amps?", I responded. They did not understand the welding concept. I searched the place and found a bunch of tape which I used to cover all the exposed cables. Even the other radio ops did not seem concerned. I wonder what they would have done if I had shorted a screwdriver across one of the rigs? Sometimes it is very difficult to tell folks they are in danger and have them understand it. 73, Kevin. Instead of a full blown computer at the remote site why not just design an app for an Ethernut board? If you have IP access to the site then the Ethernut board can run the K3 from firmware. Set the watchdog timer so if there are any glitches it times out and resets the board. Send the commands to the IP address and the Ethernut board parses them and sends them to the K3. Or you could do what I did: shatter my right wrist in so many places they had to pin it together. For eight weeks I was in a cast that held my hand immobile; thus necessitating my entry into the world of left handedness. I learned to do every thing with my left hand, most especially how to write. Made me ambidextrous in many of the things I do. I could even throw a baseball with my non-dominant hand. Could not throw it fast but I could hit the target. This accident interrupted my entry into amateur radio for many years. The theory was simple but my right hand would not send CW. By the time I thought to try my left hand other interested had taken over. Oh well, it would have been nice to have gotten my ticket in 1966 or so. I was learning how to send on a bug at the same time. The point being I can still write with my left hand if necessary but I have found it simple to send and write with the same hand. There is plenty of time as long as you copy in your head for a few seconds (words). Now to learn how to send left handed to ease the pain in my right wrist. 73, Kevin. I once had an op check into ECN who I knew but his fist sounded rather odd. Spacing was good but the keying sounded flaky. He was also slower than his normal speed. After the nets he emailed me and told me his story. He had been using two pieces of stranded wire to send code. I think solid wire works much better ;) Once you know code you can use any manner of instrument to send it. 73, Kevin. The decoder on the K3 can be used to monitor one's sending. Getting the word spaces correct can be checked with it. However, thinking, copying, and sending simultaneously with the slight delay inherent in the decoder is like juggling five balls at once. It can be done but it makes life more interesting :) Kevin. I agree. I started on paddles and used them for four years before I ever tried a straight key. By then the rhythm of the code was built in so using the key was simple. But I could only send for ten minutes or so before noticing how hard it was. I think I could run a key for a few hours but why when I can use paddles instead? Kevin. I know a guy in Minnesota with a ton of hard line on a very tall tower. I think his 6m antenna is attached part way up the side at about 1000 feet. I think you may want to convince him to add an XG3 beacon on that hardline during his off hours. Or raise the 6m loop up a bit and put it at 2000 feet. I never use the speaker and I ride the RF gain. When I hear the signal rising I can catch it in time to avoid limiting. However, I only use this method when the QSB is a fast flutter which causes me problems. When the QSB is simply a slow up and down wave I'll use AGC-F which is fine. This morning I had both rapid and slow QSB. The rapid QSB was the problem while the slow QSB was easily dealt with by riding the RF gain. Kevin. I was playing with NECwin+ and found an interesting antenna. Later I found it had already been invented but it was fascinating to see how the numbers worked. It was an off center fed doublet with the feed point at the 3/8 - 5/8 point. It worked well without a tuner for almost all bands. I was running fast AGC and thought maybe slowing it down may help. It did - a little. So I took the next logical step and turn AGC off entirely. The characters popped right out at me. I just rode the RF gain as the signal went through its slower QSB while the fast flutter QSB did little to bother me. AF gain was cranked to high as I normally run it while RF gain was set to where the background QRN was minimized. Turning off the AGC helped eliminate the fast flutter problems which were causing me difficulties copying. This is most likely old news to many of you but I have been running AF gain at max and controlling volume with the RF (or IF) gain since 1960 when I first started SWLing on my brother's Lafayette receiver. Good Evening, Twenty meters worked wonderfully this afternoon. Many more contacts than recent weeks have provided. There was QSB and a number of storms across the country but turning up the RF gain helped dig out the weaker stations. Forty meters has become quite the local net over the last two months. I rarely reach over the Rockies let alone the Cascades or Sierras. Today I got two Californians with very different weather reports. Dale mentioned 90 while Brian gave me one in the 70s. Both reports were warmer than mine. I got to 55 degrees today with rain and clouds. One spot of blue was all I saw. Good Evening, I just checked my weather forecast and was shocked! On Tuesday the thermometer will peak at 70 degrees! Such heat is just not normal. Another spate of summer-like heat for a short period then back to more normal 50 degree temperatures. I shall need to stock up on ice and sunblock for this spell of sweltering heat. Lately it has been in the high 50s and wet. Today the fire in my wood stove is perking along after I spent the morning splitting more kindling. I hiked the property yesterday and planned my next season's wood cutting schedule. I have about five acres of downed timber to clear with a number of deadfalls to negotiate. After I clear the working area I can plan how to drop those hanging trees. Without a place to run I am in the path of a few large fir trees. I doubt whether they would attempt to dodge me during their fall to earth. Propagation was good this week. Good enough for a few skeds on twenty meters. Some QSB and some QRM from stations who could not hear either one of us working. But with the Elecraft gear I just move the filters off to the side a bit to weaken the QRM and all is well. I keep reading about the sun going back to sleep but that's OK; we did just fine during the low part of the solar cycle. Maybe one day we shall get the large numbers of sunspots with the requisite ionization where propagation will be fantastic. I have yet to be skunked any time I have run the nets so why worry about the sun and its foibles? If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. On Mt. Hood we just laid the antenna down on the talus and it worked fine. I've done the same thing in New Mexico and in Oklahoma. In OK it was not talus but sand on Black Butte. Kevin. Good Evening, Last week I was unable to get home in time to run either net. Errands kept me in town much too late. I am sorry I was unable to run them. However, this week I shall not leave my property the entire weekend so I will be on tomorrow. After two days of heat in the low 70s the weather has turned back to chilly again. This week the highs have been in the high 50s. Not since last Sunday has the thermometer broken 60 degrees. The 70 degree heat wave did feel good even though it brought out the biting flies. It was nice to walk around without a jacket. Luckily I still have a lot of wood for the stove. Some neighbors have run out of wood because they were not planning for such a long heating season. I read stories about folks having 80 degree weather or hotter but it is hard to imagine when I am still hauling wood to heat the house. The sun has been very active lately but only the higher bands have seen propagation improvements. Anything lower than 15 meters seems to be tough going. I need to hook my 6 meter loop back to the rig and go play there. The openings have been popping up daily. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. Good Afternoon, The weather is balmy and the wind is gentle. It is amazing what 72 degrees F feels like after months of cold and wet. Very sunny and bright today. As I was driving in my truck it got hot in the cab. I am just not prepared for the heat of a 70 degree day :) For my examination of a weather satellite image it appears the Oregon weather has moved southward into California. I am sure they will enjoy having full reservoirs later in the season. I saw Mt Hood today for the first time in a very long time. It is snow covered down to where I can no longer see it. Our reservoirs will be full too. I just read an email about good propagation on the bands. I hope they will stay that way for tomorrow's nets. I plan to be back home in time for the first net tomorrow but I may be detained. A very rare Sunday errand may take longer than I plan; but I will do my best to get home before 3 PM. I was hiking yesterday during the first hint of warmth. It was fun to see the ferns unrolling and how very green it is now. Then the biting flies descended and drove me inside. Good Evening, The snow of yesterday has turned into the hail of today. Still cold; high of only 47 degrees F but there were actual minutes of sun (if one adds up the spots here and there). My forecast does have a few 50 degree days later in the week but not much in the way of steady sun and no promise of any warm days. The wood pile should hold up until late July at this point so I better get busy cutting firewood for the rest of the summer. Maybe twenty cords is a good number for this year too. According to the word on the street (aka the 'test results) propagation has not been the best. This same thing has been effecting ECN for quite some time. Forty meters only lands two to five folks a week. Twenty meters does get a few more but I am still not logging very many folks. I wish I could find an alternate NCS in the Midwest. That would help to see if any one is interested and I cannot hear them. It could be that interest in ECN has waned to the point where I should consider ceasing activity. Who can tell? Good Afternoon, I hope you are experiencing a warmer day than I am having. 47 degrees F for the high is not what I would expect for late May. Yesterday it snowed for a few minutes before it turned into pellets. There were a few seconds of sun today so all is not bad. I am also gradually getting over my cold. It was a nasty one. Last week while running the nets there was competition with the 'operators' in my own head. Luckily the tones were not the same and the rhythms were different so I could pick up the outside operators and get them logged. After a few days of fever and chills it finally broke. I have not tested the propagation once since last week's nets. I have been too busy with this cold. If there are pauses tomorrow it just means I am coughing and cannot send. It is difficult to sneeze or cough and send code at the same time. Propagation during last Sunday's nets was not great. Ken, W0CZ, normally is between S8 and S9 and is easy copy. This time he was hard to hear with deep QSB peaking at S3. To his east, in Minnesota, N0AR could not hear me at all. But further east in Michigan and again in Connecticut I was easy copy. The only other op east of the Mississippi who I worked was Steve down in Georgia who gave me a 97 degree temperature report. Good Evening, There were three sunny days this week. Yippee! Temperature spiked at 65 degree yesterday, the warmest it has been since last year. It was nice to be able to open the windows and let the air flow through. Looks like more sunny days will be coming next week so maybe the wet season is due to end soon. Now that I know where the leaks are I can fix them around my skylight. Seems water can flow uphill because these leaks are nowhere near any seam in the roofing. Propagation was good the few days I was on the air. Unfortunately I grew ill during the latter part of the week and was not able to get on again. Even though CW allows one to work with a very sore throat I thought it better that I slept instead of getting up early for my skeds. I think I have shortened my cold by a few days by doing so. Hopefully tomorrow my ears will not be plugged up so I can hear better. I know yesterday's streaming feed from Dayton was tough to hear. But I was able to get most of what Wayne had to say about his new rig. Looks like a fun gadget. I would like to see the innards though. Seems the K3 got shrunk into a TFR for those of us who like to work from the boonies. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. Good Evening, The two nets were plagued with QRM. Mostly tuners with one tester. I sometimes wonder about people. Twenty meters was clear and I was able to land two stations in Connecticut. One of them was Bill, K1EV. I asked him to call the net and he got Dave, W8OV, who had just awoken. Must have been busy contesting this weekend :) Forty meters had its normal loud noise level but I was able to work a few stations. I need to determine when 40 opens up because z is not the best time for it. I am happy I got a relay station on twenty meters so maybe I'll cease operations on forty until autumn and concentrate on twenty meters with until then. Good Evening, Today was very nice. Quite warm though; it got to 62 degrees under a sunny sky. It felt hot out. First time in a long time I walked around outside in a t-shirt. Luckily the biting flies have not yet appeared. Once it gets warm they show up for two weeks. Then they are gone for a full year. I must be thankful for that. Compared to the Midwest where I got eaten alive by mosquitoes this is OK with me. On my walk I found out I have some spies. There was elk sign only ten feet from the house. I wonder what they think? If I would have been on my radio they would have blocked my view! Propagation was decent this week. Reports of openings on 6 meters mean the E season is getting underway. I started looking into activating a SOTA summit and find I could almost do it from home. The mountain I live on is listed. Now do I walk downhill a bit until I get to where I can walk upward again for 25 meters in elevation change? I am just shy of the 30 meter from the summit working area for a SOTA activation site. But, if I walk to the top of the mountain I'll have three large towers to contend with. I think I'll find a site below the summit which had not been clearcut and use the numerous fir trees as antennas supports of an easily mounted sloper or end fed half wave. It is nice to know I don't have to use any vehicle at all to activate my first peak. If anyone is interested in acting as a relay station on either net please email me. I am running two 27" monitors from one video card. There is an adaptor on one cable to allow it to work with either input to the monitor. These monitors: Asus VE278 Q, have VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs. I am using DVI on one and HDMI on the other because I don't want to run two video cards on this box. The adaptors came with the monitors. 73, Kevin. Good Evening, A pleasant day today. Chilly, with rain, but there were openings in the clouds which let light blink through every so often. About one minute of sun for every hour today. I received reports of temperatures ranging from 96 degrees down to 60 degrees; none of which matched my low 50 degree day. I am glad it has stopped snowing for a week and hope that condition continues until November :) Conditions on twenty meters were good for all contacts. The lowest RST report I gave was 569. Only slight QSB with very little noise. Forty meters had its normal amount of noise but conditions favored only West Coast stations. I was able to land the NCS of the Elecraft SSB net but totally forgot I had never logged him on his K3 thus missing the opportunity to get his serial number. Sorry Phil. Good Evening, The weather has been cool this week but I have seen a few minutes of sun. More flowers are blooming and I think most of the frost danger has passed. Logging season is in full swing. After a full month of gravel trucks driving by starting before dawn I saw my first truck load of trees bound for St. Helens. Each of the gravel trucks has a trailer behind it so my road is getting flattened by the sheer weight of each load. Propagation has been decent each morning on twenty meters with just a little noise and some QSB. It is good to be able to hear all of a contact with strong signals. Only last year it was hard to do so. I read yesterday in Sky & Telescope that the peak of this solar cycle is due in 2013. They also mentioned it will be one of the weaker cycles recorded. Oh well, I'll have to wait until the next one I guess :) I do remember the 1958-59 period when I started listening to shortwave. It was fun. IGY was only a year in the past so there was a lot of attention being paid to the newly found Van Allen belts and the satellites going into orbit. Echo 1 and 2 were fun to watch from the backyard. It is hard to imagine it has been 50 years since Alan Shepard took that first sub-orbital flight. It is also hard to imagine how very little progress we have made in space since 1969. Good Evening, The twenty meter net went fairly well with some QSB but little noise. Check ins were from the Middle West, Texas, Alaska, Colorado, and California. Forty meters was noisy with not much activity. I hit my recorded CQ a few times when the stations grew quite sparse but only got four check ins, all from the West. I did have some help on the first net with a relay into California from N0AR. Thanks Scott! Weather was pleasant today if a little chilly. Spring is very slowly coming to the PNW. I have heard it was nice in the valleys but up here it got to 62 degrees which felt pretty good. There is still snow on the surrounding mountains. Maybe in the next few weeks that will disappear. More flowers were open when I went on my walk but in the next week or two they will explode into bloom all over the mountain. Red currants are just getting started. Good Evening, I hope your weather is warmer than mine. A few more days of snow this week was not pleasant. An inch on the ground one day with a little more the next. Supposedly spring is at hand but only a few signs of it are showing. Flowers are very confused. I have trilliums blooming before daffodils and lower down there is a flowering dogwood getting started. There is a grouse drumming very close to the house. Each time I walk outside I hear him. I don't think I can sneak up on him because he is in a large open bowl. The sound of my creeping up on him would be so magnified I would not even get a glimpse of him. Propagation was good the few times I got on this week. Today the balloon was an easy signal to copy for most of its flight. Only the lower elevations were not easily heard here in Oregon. A solar stream hit the earth early today causing a few aurora. Hopefully this will have calmed down by tomorrow while activating the ionosphere. We shall see if the East and Southeast are heard once again. Luckily there are no major holidays this weekend.
