[Elecraft] PTT keying a KXPA100 with a K2

2020-12-13 Thread Luc Favre

Hi,
I own a QRP-K2 with the KIO2 installed.
I want to PTT key a KXPA100 (not KPA100).
May I connect Pin9 from KIO2 (8V in receive mode and 0V in transmit
mode) directly with the PTT-IN connector on the KXPA100 (5V receive, 0 V
transmit) ? Maybe with a diode (cathode KIO2, anode KXPA100) ?

Thank you for advice

[Elecraft] Feeding 2 transverters XV144

2018-06-29 Thread Luc Favre

Hi,

I want to  realize a 144 contest setup with 2 PA, 2 antennas and 2
transverters tuned on the same frequency with therefore a unique K3
switched back and forth only during receive.

To do so, I want to feed two XV144 transverters in parallel at 28 MHz
from the KXV3 TX path interface (dual port interface) (For receiving, I
switch back and forth between the two transverters RX path). In the TX
path, I intend to use a BNC-Tee with the common port attached to the 28
MHz KVV3 port and the each transverter connected to the other Tee-Ports.

Is this OK or do I need a Wilkinson divider to feed each transverter
with the assumed 50 ohm resistance ? I didn't find any impedance figure
to be seen from the KXV3 nor from the XV144.
Tu for helping me with advice.

[Elecraft] K3 event macros

2014-04-14 Thread Luc Favre

Hello,

In VHF weak signal traffic it's often very useful to end the
transmission by a bip sound (the QSO partner knows you are now
listening). To do this, I try to write a K3 macro launched by the
release of the microphone transmit button. This macro could activate a
voice recorder memory place with the bip recorded inside (sure, they are
better solutions). Writing the macro itself is probably not a big deal
but I didn't found in the K3 programmer manual how to launch the macro
as the microphone transmit buton is released - a kind event driven
programmation !

Any idea ?

[Elecraft] KXPA100 et Smarttuner SG230

2014-04-09 Thread Luc Favre

Hello,

My configuration : KX3, KXPA100 (with KXAT100, not used in normal
operation), coax line, SG230 (Smartuner), doublet.

My question :
In way to tune the Smarttuner, I must send some RF into the Smartuner
via the coax line. Before the tuning process begins, the SWR in the coax
line to the Smartuner may be very high. In this case, the KXPA100 goes
into Fault Condition (Err Ant) ; no RF more, the tuning process stops.

Roundabouts :
1. PA off (via menu), tuning with KX3 barefoot.
2. KXAT100 on, KXAT100 tuning, Smartuner tuning, KXAT100 off.

Doing so (1. or 2 above), I can get the Smartuner tuned, but it's a bit
cumbersome.

Any idea ?

[Elecraft] K2 and X144

2014-03-24 Thread Luc Favre

Hello, I have and odd and maybe difficult question :

Is it possible to have one (and only one) K3 transmitting into two XV144
on the same frequency, but swaping between them on receive?

The idea is to have a contest configuration with two antennas and two
PA. The two PA are transmitting together but the receiving signal ist
picked up from one or the other receiving chain.

Thanks for any idea !

Re: [Elecraft] K2 LCD Issue

I had the same issue and resoldering the LCD did the job.

Don,

That normally is the symptom of a solder connection that did not
receive adequate heat during soldering. After a time, enough
oxidation has developed to cause a problem.

If you are fortunate, that bad solder connection will be at the LCD.
Re-flow the solder for the LCD leads (I suggest soldering from the
side the LCD is mounted on), and see if that cures the problem. If it
does not, then the problem is with the soldering of Front Panel U1.
Tell me which segment is not working and I can tell you which U1 pin
that needs to be soldered better. Since the pins of FP U1 are covered
by the LCD, the technique for resoldering is to carve away a bit of
the plastic from the U1 socket and soldering the pin from the socket
side of the board.

[Elecraft] K2 : 8T rise and fall

2009-02-02 Thread Luc Favre
I have an heavy trouble with my K2/100. During last french contest in SO2R
setup, I made a mistake and keyed the K3 with the K2 still on the same band. I
heard a strong noise in the K2, saw smoke and the TX was dead. RX OK. I've just
replaced the 2 low level PA transistors : they were broken, both electrically
and physically.
Now the K2 has following behaviour : pressing TUNE, the PA collectors current
rise very shortly, then fall. After 1 or 2 seconds, depressing TUNE has the
same behaviour. I measured the 8 T line and the 8T voltage follows the same
law. Suspecting any processor error, I made a reset (456POWER). No change.

Any idea ? Where sould I focalise my efforts ?

I would say : signal tracing, as explained in the owner manual. The K2 ist the
perfect rig to do this kind of job : its design and construction are simple and
access to the components is easy. Have a look to the dirty signal tracing on

 Hello everyone.

Things are going really well with the build of s/n 1591 (I had the power
on tonight for the initial power-up test - so exciting!!!) but tonight
when I went to put the TCXO module on the KREF board, I discovered that
the leads on the module are too long to allow its bottom to rest
against the socket as described on p.46 of the assembly manual. Is this
a problem? Do I need to trim the leads?
FYI the leads are 1/4 long and a gap of 1/16 is left between the
bottom of the TCXO module and its socket when it is fully engaged.

BTW for those of you keeping track of delivery times:

 K3 kit ordered May 9
 Katiegram August 27
 Delivery on Sept. 5

I really appreciated receiving this info. when I was awaiting my K3 - my
thanks to everyone who shared this info. on the reflector!

 Thanks for looking 73

[Elecraft] KX1 : poor sensitivity on 30/20 m with KBX3080

2008-06-28 Thread Luc Favre
Good morning,
I installed the KBX3080 module and all seems to run OK. Tx power juste fine
on all bands. Great sensivity on 40/80 (0.2 µV), but poor sensivity on 30
and 20 (0.8 and 1.0 µV).
Transmit low pass filter is OK.
KBX3080 module tensions (versus freq.) are OK too and adj. condenser are
right installed.
I tried to inject RF along the RX chain : at point A still poor sensitivity,
at pot R1 side L6 end, full sensivity (0.2 µB or even better). I then
changed L6, still poor sensitivity. The problem seems to be in the module
itself, but no idea where.
Any help and/or idea welcome !

[Elecraft] KX1 : low power

Hi all,
I got a problem building my KX1: receive is OK, but transmit power is far
too low (40 m 2W, 20 m 0,5 W with 13,5 V).
Of course, I checked and double checked solders, solder bridges, components
and values. BPF and LPF are OK as measured with RF generator and
oscilloscope. Output waveform good. Frequency right.
Transmit voltages are all OK, but Q7's transmit base voltage is minus 1,1 V
(minus) instead of the requested plus 0,7 V. Resistances and other
components Q7 circuit are OK? 6V_2T is + 5,5 V. Q7 replaced Q7 without.
Any idea will be welcome !

Don,

Thanks for your quick reply. Following values are Vrms made with Elecraft RF
Probe and DDM.
(7 MHz value/14 MHz value)
Q1 gate : 0.17 / 0.16
Q1 Source : 0.11 / 0.18
Q4 base : 0.10 / 0.18
Q5 base : 0.9 / 1.1
Q5 collector : 4.7 / 6.0
Q6 base : 1.3 / 1.2
 Q6 collector : 8.9 / 10.7

I suppose these values are quite consistent.
Q5 collector values and Q6 base values seem to have the same relation
betwenn them as the impedances (1:3). Am I right ?

Thanks for your help.

[Elecraft] Trouble with K2 PLL reference oscillator

2006-03-28 Thread Luc Favre
Hello YLs and OMs,
I have an annoying trouble with the PLL reference oscillator in my K2
(1028):
I use the K2, ever for hours, without any trouble. I switch it off.
I switch it on within minutes : the PLL reference oscillator does'nt
oscillate anymore
I switch the K2 off and wait for 10 to 20 minutes : the PLL reference
oscillator starts then like a charm.
Of course, I've inspected and redone all the solder joints, looked for
solder bridges, defect or unsoldered parts, and even more. I've tested the
oscillator transistor Q19 and the diodes D18 and D16, looked for defect
resistors or chokes (L31) and other discontinuities without detecting
anything false or suspect.
I tried to reproduce the trouble by heating the board with an hair dryer,
without any success.
Has anyone verified such a annoying behaviour ?
Any idea ?
Thanks for help and suggestion.

[Elecraft] Where can I find it in Europ ?

2006-02-13 Thread Luc Favre
Hello,
My K2 # 1028.
I have a more or less often appearing problem. The pots for RIT/XIT, RF
gain, power are all the sames and become tired as trhe time went go : the
beomes too much play. I had this trouble at the XIT/RIT pot with following
effect : the frequency moves down or up as the play in the shaft becomes
more or less. Elecraft shipped me one new pot and I change it. OK. But now
the same problem occurs with the RF-Gain-Pot giving large voltage peaks to
the the processor. Effect : RF desensibilisation during the peaks and mute
during AGC recovery (recovery time varies according to the position
Fast/Slow). Brand of these pots seems to be ALPHA, but I can't locate even a
substitute, in France of course not, but even not in Germany nor in the UK.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA100 Spur on 160m ?

2004-12-02 Thread Luc Favre
Interesting, interesting...
I had a similar problem on 80 CW only : my note was T8 and garbling. I used
a K2/100 and a SB220-PA. I attributed this behaviour to the weakness of the
220 V supply (engine driven generator). By why only on 80 ?
More on this subject ?

During a recent 80m QSO with Ron, ZL1TW, he reported that I had some
kind of FM-ing on 80m cw.
Did some fooling-around yesterday found the problem only existed on
80m only on powers of 80w or more. It was VERY noticeable on a second
Rx I was surprised nobody had mentioned it before - however, it was a
kind of revenge for Ron, as it was me who told him about the problem on
his K2 a few weeks ago.
Anyway, I installed a 12pF capacitor from the junction of D12/D14 to
ground, on the KPA-100 all now seems clean. Not sure if the problem
had always existed with my unit, or whether it appeared 'along the
way'. This quick easy mod DOES work though, but it would be good to
 get some official Elecraft comments!

Subject: [Elecraft] USB to Serial converter

 Hi,

Anyone know of a good, inexpensive USB to Serial Converter preferably that
does RTS/DTR for PTT and CW keying? I need one for a second port for my
Lap Top which has only one serial port.

I've never had such a problem, even after 36 hours contesting. Have a look
to the diodes and the connections !

 Vic:

I do it all the time and have (so far) seen nothing to indicate such a
problem.

[Elecraft] KCR2 with 2 radios, some questions

2004-09-20 Thread Luc Favre
I'm considering the acquisition of a KRC2-unit, but I'm not sure it will
fill my needs in my specific contest configuration.
I want to use the KRC2 with a K2 with a KPA100, a KAT100 and a linear
(SB220) as first radio, another transceiver as second radio, a
PC-contest-program (TR-log or similar), antennas swiching-relais (to switch
antennas back and forth beetween the two radios) and other switching devices
for keyer and headphones.
My question : is the KRC2 the unit I need ?
Another question : the KRC2 manual mentions a daisy-chain to couple the
KTA100 to the KRC2. What is this ? Another word to say parallel connecting ?
Thank for your help
