[Elecraft] How to run linux utilities (K3, KPA etc.) on 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04
1. Launch synaptic and goto “settings > Repositories” 2. click “other software > add” 3. insert this line in the box "deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ raring main restricted universe multiverse" 4. click ok and close synaptic 5. in terminal “sudo apt-get update” 6. in terminal “sudo apt-get install ia32-libs” Now, all utilities working on my 64 bit Ubuntu 14.04. I hope this helps. Anyway, there is a need of 64bit utilities, they should be released as soon as possible. I have been playing with various distros and have pretty much settled on Linux Mint 13 Maya. It does everything I routinely need except: It will not run HRD under Wine. I get the program to load, however I cannot get Wine to recognize the USB port serial converter. Linux says it is there - Wine knows nothing of it. Hence, HRD has no means to communicate with the K3. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - second receiver for split ?
I use a macro based on ZL2IFB's suggestions: RT0;XT0;FR0;DV0;BW0040;SWT13;SWT13;UP4;SB1;BW0100;MN111;MP002;MN255; It is assigned to PF1 (RIT button), you can do the job with K3 utils. It copies the actual frequency to VFO B, moves the VFO 1 UP, sets on the corresponding filters. Now you listen the DX on your KRX3 while the main RX/TX is on the calling frequency. You can use QSK/QRQ while operating split. I operate almost exclusively CW. For SSB you should modify the filter bandwidth and the UP shift (up 5 probably...). 73, Martin, OK1RR Dne 18.4.2014 16:46, Jim Miller napsal(a): I had just noticed those lines but didn't think they were necessarily the transmit freq as I was in CW and the line wasn't at 600 as I would have expected. [Elecraft] Homebrew power supply
This one http://ludens.cl/Electron/Ps20/Ps20.html I tried it, it is almost perfect and very simple construction, rugged enough. If you use a high quality toroidal transformer you will probably need a soft start circuit (limiting the inrush current when switching on). This one http://www.warc.org.uk/proj_psu.php is more sophisticated construction with all types of protection you need. I use now very similar design (mnufactured here by OK2EZ) which runs now its 8th year without any problem. There are some notes (presumed the above mentioned design used as reference): - no need of 50R/50W resistor. Use a MOV surge protector (varistor) instead (similar type to varistors used in PC switching PS), they withstand much more inrush current and won't became very hot in the case of faulty RL-1. - I made very good experience with "smoothing" capacitors 20x 3300uF 105C Nippon Chemicon, Low ESR, 35 Volts (at least) instead of two big 33000uF units. This solution is also sometimes cheaper as two bigger units. 3000uF per ampere is not bad... - for usual 100 W radio rate your PS not for 20 Amperes but for 25-30 A instead. The four 2N3055 are good enough for 40 A with sufficient cooling, alu heatsink block + fan recommended. If fan used, its RPM should be controlled. A suitable circuit is here: http://www.ok2kkw.com/3016/komparator/pwm_ventilator/pwm_ventilace.htm This article is in Czech, a link to Google translator is provided. The thermal sensor can be located on the output transistors heatsink block. The cooling is a bit tricky. The cooling air path starts at the mains toroidal transformer followed by the bridge (a heavy heatsink should be used, preferably precisely milled to the bridge shape) and the 2N3055 on a heatsink should be located near the air open hole (with a grill). There are some poor constructions where the hot air warmed by the 2N3055 output set warms up the trasformer... - the output current metering can be done at the primary of the mains transformer (clamp ammeter principle). No need of any 0.01 ohm resistor in the output path. The measured values must be corrected. This circuit is still planned, no schematic available for now. 73 Martin, OK1RR Dne 16.1.2014 22:40, John Cooper napsal(a): Anyone have schematic or plans or know a site that has one for min 20amp power supply to run a k2 at 100watts. [Elecraft] Problems with CW sidetone
I have some problems with my CW sidetone. When a strong (enormous) noise or QRM occurs then my sidetone through QSK sounds too soft, rounded, which complicates CW operation > 40 wpm. Re: [Elecraft] help needed with Linux utils for K3, P3, KAT500 and XG3
Sam, I created an Elecraft folder in my directory and copied there the utilities. Good idea is to use a file manager, I prefer Krusader because it is a twin panel manager similar to Total Commander for Windows or Norton Commander for DOS. This allows you to work with archives in the same way as with directories. A hassle around command line things like tar -xvf is an unnecessary obstacle. You find there the directories k3util_1_13_6_17 (in K3UtilityLINUX_1_13_6_17.tgz) kpautil (in KPAUtilityLINUX_1_13_1_29.tgz) kat500util_1_13_6_17 (in KAT500UtilityLINUX_1_13_6_17.tgz) p3util (in P3UtilityLINUX_1_13_2_3.tgz) copy these directories to you Elecraft folder. The executables (k3util, kpautil, kat500util, p3util) are inside your new directories. After first start they created its own folders for firmware and other files. If something does not work, try the ldd command in your terminal, ie. ldd k3util it will tell you what component is possibly missed. My experience - all works at first trial, you don't need to add anything. It works like a champ, thanks Elecraft! 73, Martin, OK1RR K3 #7554 KPA500 #1565 KAT500 #849 P3 #2752 Dne 4.9.2013 19:57, Sam Morgan napsal(a): I have just installed Linux Mint 15. Fred, ~90% of the "really good ham apps" initially written for Windoze runs in Linux, sometimes much faster than in its native environment. The only problem is to know HOW... This list isn't a good place to advocate Linux (or any other OS), however there is a general rule: 1. Try 2. If does not work, ask 3. If nobody knows, it does not mean that this app definitely can't work... I want to remind that the OS is an environment only! In my experience, it is worth to investigate the internal mechanics, it is also good chance to learn something new. No bad surprises in the future! [Elecraft] K2 ultimate rejection
Looking at the Rob Sherwood's receiver data table http://www.sherweng.com/table.html I discovered a remarkable fact: the K2's weakest point is the FILTER ULTIMATE REJECTION. Sherwood says it is 80 dB only (and there are two K2s) and it was confirmed by one of our top grade contesters and DXpeditioners. A closer look onto schematic awake an idea to reuse KSB2 crystal filter for receiving on both CW and SSB. No doubt the additional 7 crystals will improve this figure significantly. I had no opportunity to track the rather complex diode switching scheme but Sherwood's figures saying it clearly – there are 5+2 crystals in CW receive path only. So my question: is there any mod to improve the ultimate rejection using KSB2 crystal filter? (of course, G3RXQ's filter mods are here but I don't plan to destroy a KSB2 board and I am not interested in SSB). Would any experienced K2 builder willing to play around this? And a QSK improvement to listen between elements up to 40 wpm would made from the K2 a dream radio :-) I don't own my K2 yet but a 100 dB ultimate rejection would ensure me that I should't lose my time with thinking if to buy or not :-) 73, Martin, OK1RR ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2 / KIO2 RS-232 Control Software
It should be mentioned (also on the Elecraft web site) that there is Hamlib - an universal radio control software with full support of the K2. It is Hamlib (a project of Frank Singleton, VK3FCS/KM5WS and Stéphane Fillod, F8CFE) which can be found at http://hamlib.sourceforge.net/ It can be used with(in) Linux and Windows software, however this software must be projected to work with Hamlib. As far as I know it is employed by TLF by Rein, PA0R, a very promising TR-log like contesting software pack (very powerful and free, of course). Other projects using Hamlib are Xlog by Joop, PG4I, a fast developing station logger for Linux (X11) and Xdx, also by PG4I, which is an excellent Telnet DX Cluster client. Re: [Elecraft] Spam bounce?
It seems that the general settings of spam filtering is the culprit. Some ISP blocking mass freemail providers (yahoo.com, aol.com etc.). An email address change is the solution. 73 Martin OK1RR F5UL napsal(a): May be out of order on this reflector, but yesterday I had a mssage to post concerning a big trouble with my K2 SN 4498 and the following was all what I got in return...!!! So what can I do to post an e-mail from Europe? Thank you very much for the pass band ! But this morning turning it on, I just got a vigorous howl ( very low freq nois !). I turn it off, and on after a few second. The Rx start normaly and the noise start again after a few second. Re-turn off and tunr on and no howl and Rx is working correctly! The set was in CW mode so I turn down power (to abt 2/3 watts) and close the key... The result is correct on 1.8, 3.5, 7.0 but nil on the rest of the bands. Closing the key a little longer on 7.0 the rig goes to curent overange in abt 10/12 second and power fall down to zero. So power off, open the rig, remove the bottom cover and before removing the heat sink just check the resistance of driver and PAOn Q6 (driver) E to Gnd 1.3 ohm, B to Gnd 76/80 ohms, and C to Gnd > 500 ohms. On Pa C to Gnd > 600 ohms, B to Gnd 120/130 ohm E to Gnd 0 (it's normal!)They seems to be normals but any time I close the key I get High Cur and power out ZERO !! I do n,ot know what to do so I will wait till tomorow and hope to get some indications from the list ! Thanks in advance guy, BCNU 72 Bob/F5UL ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K2 with 144Mhz transverter - phase noise
it would be quite interesting to know where is the culprit - if K2 or the transverter 73 Martin OK1RR Fraser Robertson napsal(a): Adi, I've compared two latest spec. K2/100's with a FT1KMP, TS870, and a home brew VFO/Xtal mixer rig, and the close in TX phase noise (unkeyed carrier) of the K2's is worse than the other rigs. I think the figure you quote is probably typical. If there is a way to improve on this I'd love to know as in many respects the K2 is a great rig and I'd like to use it for QRO contesting. (I have not used a transverter). 73 Fraser G4BJM NF 6dB, IP3 -26 dBm and TX noise at least 10dB greater than FT1KMP. For those who r not familiar with this data I can only say that are badbut how??? I suppose the transverter was always the same. Why? How? TNX for answers... S55M-Adi _ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! [Elecraft] K2 vs. TT OMNI VI+
I don't have a K2 yet but considering to obtain it very soon. I would be interested to know if some reflectees compared receiver performace of the TT Omni VI+ and K2 (DR for 2 kHz spacing and phase noise, birdies etc). Another point of interest is the QSK - I know that the QSK of K2 is good but not astonishing, I am interested on QSK at 40+ wpm. What is the upper QSK limit?
