[Elecraft] K3S RF/SQL Adjustment
I'll admit I just don't know how best to adjust my K3S RK/SQL knob. I have AGC-S on, filters wide open at 2.8, and have set: AGC DCY nor AGC HLD 0.00 AGC PLS nor AGC SLP 012 AGC THR 008 AGC-F 120 AGC-S 020 On 14MHz CW Mode, where I see/hear CW no signal on my P3, with RF/SQL rotated full ClockWise, S-Meter is solid 3 flashing 4-5. Rotating AF clockwise, from full Counter-ClockWise off, it's pretty noisy at about 9 o'clock. I'd appreciate some advice and learning! How I got this far without figuring this out [shaking head]... Follow-up to this old thread: When I set my filters 200-500Hz, with CWT on, and tune to strong signal, I can touch SPOT and see the frequency jump a bit. On my P3, I don't see the vertical green line jump to the peak of the signal. How is that? Has anyone looked at the ICOM LC-192 backpack for compatibility with the KX2? The KX2 is smaller than the IC-705. It seems, with the extra space, cable routing could work even if connectors are in different locations. Any luck with that Bob? I've been using Winlink on Packet VHF from a Kenwood TM-D710G but wanted to try 80m with my K3S. I'm to the point where Ardop is trying to connect to a local gateway about 5mi away from a 43ft vertical with remote ATU at base at 50W. No connection yet... I'm able to RX/TX on WSJT-X so figure my configuration should work, but perhaps I need to tweak it for Ardop? [Elecraft] K3S/P3/KPS500/KAT500 Restart Woes
Our downstairs, including my shack, was being remodeled and I just put my system back together. The good news: 1. K3S runs and I can RX FT8 on WSJT-X 2.1.2 - CAT works fine 2. Remote ATU works when I hit TUNE on the K3S - SWR read goes to 1.0 (I have a Directional Coupler/Panadapter TX Sensor 1.8-5.4MHz 2KW installed too). 3. KAT500 works The stuff to work on: 1. P3 does not power on by front Power Button push 2. KPA500 does not power on by front ON button push 3. WSJT-X Tune or TX and I hear signal emitting from my PC monitor (which has an integrated speaker, I guess) - USB Audio Codec selected for both Input and Output in WSJT-X Audio settings The power-on issues I cannot figure - cables look OK but maybe not...or a K3S setting? WSJT-X sound output issues - maybe Win10 updates and WSJT-X changes to sort? I ran mine with a WSPRlite on 40m at 200mW with 2 counterpoise for a day, then added a 3rd counterpoise with no improvement observed. Spots out to 2400km from 300ft elevation. Mount was atop a 4ft tripod with counterpoise arrayed on grass. I’m finding it very useful to use a miniVNA to arrange 2 counterpoise wires for 20m for low SWR *before* engaging the ATU on my KX2. A random toss of wires might yield SWR > 9 and better arrangement < 2 SWR. I’ll try the same for 40m but may have trouble getting those wires to fit inside a hotel room! When the window doesn’t open I use the AX1 inside suction-cupped to the window. I can stick it outside if the window opens but counterpoise wires dangling straight down seems suboptimal. I see note to attach the radials to the transceiver near the antenna jack. If using a short coax to mount the antenna on THE Elecraft tripod base, is connecting radials to that base preferred or is connecting them to the transceiver still advised? I use the Elecraft AX1 radial and a separate radial cut for 20m now, connected to the antenna base rather than KX2 chassis. I'll probably make another 40m radial and mark it to roll for 20m. I brought along a NanoVNA this trip and used it to array the two counterpoise attached to my AX1 antenna - adjustments of counterpoise brought SWR down from 9+ to <2. SNRs in the low ‘teens with a 200mW WSPRlite vs upper 20s - *inside* a hotel room with sealed windows. As Wayne said, the AX1 is particular wrt configuration. When it’s good, it’s very, very good, but when it’s bad, it’s terrible. The NanoVNA is pretty cheap/light kit to add if you’re not bringing an ATU-enabled rig. Good to operate with KX2/3 or WSPRlite as I’m doing now. This particular hotel has windows with metal trim and the antenna touches the trim to muck up TX. Next trip I’ll have some silicone rubber tubing to insulate such contact. Uber-light with AX1, 3 suction cups, tripod mount and 2 counterpoise, 10ft RG174 coax with Mix31 ferrite bead, WSPRlite, USB cable and wall wart to AC mains. [Elecraft] [KX2] WSJT-X Split - Rig or Fake It?
I'm using a KX2/KXPA100 at 40W on a Win10 laptop with WSJT-X 2.1.0 for FT8. Antenna is a G5RV at 40ft with base ATU 150ft away. I've been advised elsewhere that "Fake It" is a better choice than "Rig" for Split Mode: "it depends on what filter the radio has. Most are 2.4Khz (300-2700). If so you would most likely need to be between around 600 to 2300. It also depends on the skirts of the filter on where power will drop off and you can maybe have harmonics. If you want to limit your transmit audio to 1500-2000 you may not be able to find a clear place to transmit. If you have CAT control then fake it automatically will adjust your transmit audio frequency to be in the sweet spot of the filter." I understand the KX2 filter is DSP Filtering: 50-4000 Hz, so am not sure about using "Fake It" or "Rig" and would appreciate comment. Thanks! While I had quite a few Mix31 beads on antenna coax and the various other power, CAT and audio cables connecting my rig, it seems adding a few more helped. I think it was a ferrite bead on the special cable set that connects the KXPA100 and KX2 that did the trick. RF leaking in somehow! While my base shack is all bonded to my AC panel ground, I'm running "portable" with KX2/KPA100 on my deck and portable antennas in my back yard while we're renovating. So I don't have a good bonding/ground configuration. Virtually none! [Elecraft] KX2 TX "Sticks On" in FT8?
While running FT8 on my KX2/KXPA100, the TX red LED will sometimes stay on and the FT8 waterfall shows blank (like when TXing). ALC is stuck on 1 Bar when I've got it set 4-5 Bars. If I click Tune in WSJT-X once or twice I see the 4-5 Bars ALC and then all returns to normal. Is TX being "Stuck On" my KX2 or WSJT-X acting up? Using Win 10 and a Soundblaster Play! 3 USB audio adaptor. It comes to mind I have an Elecraft T1 ATU I might try attaching directly to the base of the AX1 rather than relying on the KX2 ATU 25-40ft from the antenna. I try to operate closer but sometimes have to run that RG58 to clear obstructions. Thoughts? [Elecraft] KX2/KXPA100 WSJT-X Setup?
I’ve got my KX2 working with WSJT-X FT8 and am just inserting a KXPA100/KXAT100 into the system. WSJT-X seems unhappy with CAT control - the KXUSB cable used to connect my PC to the ACC jack on KX2 but that’s now occupied by the KXPACBL/KX2ACBL cable combination that runs from the KXPA100 Control jack to the ACC jack. There is a RS232 jack on the KXPA100 to connect to a PC for use of the KXPA100 Utility. Is there a way to sort this out? [Elecraft] KX2/AX1 WSPR vs FT8
I'm running my KX2 on 5W with a AX1 vertical loaded whip on 20m with two counterpoise cut for 1/4 wave. I'm able to RX/TX WSPR with my spots heard in minus single digits - some positive single digits. I'm also able to RX FT8 but unable to QSO - nobody apparently hears me on HamSpots. It seems I have my answer but was hoping that if I could get my signal spotted on WSPR I should get *some* spots on FT8. Perhaps FT8 has gone well out of low power and I'm in the weeds. That and I'm using vertical polarization with most horizontal. I'll add I'm operating inside hotel rooms while traveling but I figured walls stop WSPR and FT8 equivalently, but the 2min vs 15sec cycle times come into play as well. Thanks Bill, but I wasn't clear the options I was looking for were how to use he T1 with the EndFed antenna I have with the WSPRlite, given that the T1 requires 0.5W and the WSPRlite outputs only 0.2W. Odd as it sounds, I'm looking for an "amplifier" to switch in to bump 10-25 fold to 2-5W as the T1 likes 2-5W for initial tune cycle and 0.5W thereafter. The T1 has latching relays so it seems I *could* tune with a KX2 and then swap in the WSPRlite - so that's the backup plan. [Elecraft] T1 ATU for 200mW WSPRlite
I'm planning to do some camping and will bring along a KX3Helper EndFed 40-6m antenna with 9:1 Unan, T1 ATU and SOTAbeams WSPRlite to run on 30m from a USB battery bank. The T1 requires 0.5W to tune but the WSPRlite output is 0.2W. Any thoughts on options other than tuning up with another radio (like KX2 w/o ATU)? [Elecraft] AX1 Tripod Mount - Thread Dimensions?
My AX1 came with a nut embedded in the plate opposite of the BCN connectors. It seems the right place to add a knurled-head screw to affix the counterpoise(s) during use. I went to the hardware store and the clerk and I tried every screw that looked like it might fir but no-go. Does anyone know the thread dimensions? The latest drawing just show three holes now so the new model may not have the embedded nut. I'll add that, with Win10 volume mixer sliders set at 50%, WSJT-X slider set to 50%, MIC GAIN is at 3-4 to get 4 bars with 5th flashing. Running Win10 volume mixer slider to 100% does not allow 4-5 bars on the KX2 TX even with MIC GAIN on 1 and WSJT-X slider near zero. [Elecraft] [KX2] WSJT-X & Win10 Volume Mixer
I’m setting up WSJT-X 2.01 on a Win10 Surface Pro 6 laptop, using a Sabrent USB Sound card and GPS USB receiver to sync time. I’m running 5W indoors on a Elecraft AX1 antenna with supplied counterpoise on 20m. ALC flashes on TX between 4-5 bars with sliders on Windows sound at 50%, WSJT-X 50% and adjusting MIC GAIN. RX is certainly down indoors with the little whip antenna but I’m receiving 5-10 stations each cycle. But nobody seems to hear me. That might be my low power indoors on a whip, but also see that WSJT-X on the Win10 Volume Mixer just barely shows a blue bar when TXing. Does this suggest too little volume output from Win10? [Elecraft] [K3S] WSJT-X MSK144
So I'm trying WSJT-X MSK144 first time on my K3S - running 150W into a PAR AO-50 vertical loop at 30ft in Southern NH. Settings Rx 1500, F Tol 200, T/R 15s on Fast Decode (older 8 core CPU won't do Deep). By doing it wrong my local HAMs have kindly let me know to TX Odd on East Coast. I also had the K3S set on split for a while and got that fixed (off). Tx was at 50.313 in RED (how I didn't notice is beyond me). Now, set Tx 50.260.00, I got a QSO immediately during the Perseids meteor shower. Yesterday, despite wrong settings, I managed 3 QSOs from a 43ft vertical, which is a good bit less efficient than the loop, to GA, MO & IA from NH. Dunno how! Does a 6m loop or vertical, dipole tuned to 6m via base rATU) cause much havoc with nearby HAMS on MSK144 if we're all TXing Odd? [Elecraft] K3S Delta Freq LED and Split Mode in WSJT-X
I have WSJT-X 1.9.1 running in Split Mode - Rig. I see the boxed SPLIT indication on the right of my K3S display, and sometimes the delta Freq (triangle f) LED is illuminated and sometimes not. Got you on 3) JTAlerts is set to Soundcard (0) Windows Default Sound Card I should clarify my statement on TX when the BT RXr is plugged into the from Headphone jack - when WSJT-X is set to TX Enable and the K3S TX Red LED illuminates, but ALC bars are absent (0 bars). The Headphones jack is set as default and appears as Location 0 in High Def Audio Properties, so it seems I have the BTRxr in the Headphone jack as the (0) default device. In JTAlert, the soundcard Test works and I hear audio alerts in the BT earbud paired with the BT RXr. But no ALC bars. Pull the BT RXr out of the Headphone jack and ALC bars 4-5 the next cycle. Worth trying the rear PC soundcard jack? I have WSJT-X 1.9.1 running fine with my K3S and Win10 on my PC. I'd like to enable JTAlerts audio alerts using a TaoTronics TT-BA01 BT transmitter plugged into my PC headphone jack but it seems any soundcard choice from JTAlerts stops TX from my RIG. When I plug in the BT TXr I see a new soundcard choice HEADPHONES (High Definition Audio), which is separate from the one used in WSJT-X (SPEAKERS (USB Audio CODEC). How do I get JTAlerts audio working without messing up WSJT-X TX? Yep - got that set with PC at ~30%, WSJT-X slider at ~60% and MIC (Line Gain) at 18 so 4 bars solid and 5th just flickers. Running my K3S with KPA500 to a Par OA-50 6m antenna with KAT500 and K3S ATU on bypass as the antenna is tuned to ~1.1 SWR. I'll be doing an FT8 QSO and power will read 100W on one TX and then a few watts next. If I budge the K3S knob up/down a hair, it will jump back to 100W. When a few watts, I get no LEDs lit on the KPA500. What's happening? I’m using VE3NEA’s Faros NCDXF beacon software to monitor the 5 bands using my K3S on bypass with a KAT500 on bypass, as my two antennas have rATUs at the bases. When I set the KAT500 to ANT2 it keeps switching back to ANT1 so I figure it must be remembering a prior band/ANT setting. How do I make it use just ANT2 for all 5 bands? My Heil ProSet K2 headset works great with my K3S, of course. I just got a used kenwood TH-D72a HT for some satellite fun and wonder if the Heil headset will work with the HT? The TH-D72a lists: Microphone Impedance2 kΩ Audio Output (at 8 Ω, 10 % distortion) More than 300 mW (at 7.4 V) But I don’t know the Heil specs or if I can get an adaptor. Any help appreciated. [Elecraft] K3S/P3-SVGA CW Decode - P3 Power Cycle
I have always had problems using the K3 Utility to change configurations from another mode to CW, as I could see text decode on the K3S VFO B display area after a restore to my CW configuration but not on the P3-SVGA external display without a lot of fiddling. I see now that simply turning the P3 on/off is required after a configuration restore to get that text decode to display. I would make a note of that but would just forget where I put it. [Elecraft] KXPD2 - Iambic B
Just starting to use my KPXD2 paddles on my KX2. I have them set to Iambic B. The left paddle will give only dits if pressed and held any length of time. The right paddle when pressed will give either dahs or fits and dahs, depending on length of press. I can do a R or K by pressing the right paddle alone. My other dual paddles don't do that. Am I missing something? I've removed and replaced a few times. [Elecraft] [KAT500] Only ANT1
I have a K3S/KPA500/KAT500 setup configured with AUX cables in the Enhanced configuration. Two antennas are connected to ANT1 and ANT2. The ANT LED is Green on 1 and when the ANT button is pressed will not select the antenna connected to ANT2. I can connect each antenna to ANT1 and each works but I cannot select other than ANT1 with the ANT button. I'm turning on the KAT500 before K3S as indicated but perhaps am missing some configuation option? That seemed to do the trick Don. Edging the WSJT-X Power Slider down to mid-scale and K3S MIC LINE IN to ~30 gave me the wiggle room to get the 5th bar flashing. In fact, flashing just a bit was less effective than flashing a lot, but still short of solid 5th bar ON. But I guess the 5th bar flash density is a matter of the interactive balance of the other settings. But now the K3S Power Knob give relatively smooth and linear power change with rotation. Thanks! At present, I have my PC's USB Audio Codec Playback Level set at 35%, and am adjusting ALC with the MIC knob. With the WSTJ-X Tune ON, I'm slowly increasing MIC until the 3rd bar shows. Further increase jumps directly to the 5th bar, with no 4th bar appearing or flashing 5th bar. I could swear I used to be able to get that flickering 5th bar. Must be I have something else set incorrectly? But either way, I must have nudged the MIC button as now things seem OK. Any way to lock that? As such, when pressing the K3S TUNE button ON, the POWER knob on the K3S adjusts power smoothly up on the K3S (as seen on the P3TXMON and K3S display) with KPA500 off. With KPA500 ON, increasing K3S power knob increases KPA500 display power, with the P3TXMON going up too. I'll have to add "check ALC/MIC setting to my WSJT-X Cheat Sheet. Thanks for the help guys. Adjusting power still has me stymied. Oddly, once set and TXing WSJT-X FT8 15sec cycles, it creeps up from 180-200W on the KPA500 readout towards 270W. The P3TXMON reads lower but creeps up over 200W on successive TX cycles as well. I moved my components around as suggested so the TX feed is now K3S to KPA500 to KAT500 (on BYPASS if SWR is already low from remote ATU at antenna base) to Common Mode Choke to P3TXMON to Bias-T (for rATU DC over coax) and out of the house. From there it goes through a Lightning Protector GDT, another toroid choke, a long stretch of buried RG213 to base of 43ft Vertical Antenna, through another GDT and choke, to SG-235 rATU and finally to antenna mast. I'm learning about a new KPA500/KAT500 installed with my K3S. When I have the K3S power knob set, in this case, to show 420-440W peak-hold as read on the KPA500 LED screen, I see the KPA500 SWR showing 1-3 LEDs lit (it may stay at 1 LED or climb from 1 to 3 LEDs over 15sec TX, always below 1.5), the KAT500 with SWR 1.2 LED lit, and P3TXMON indicating SWR 1.00 (it might start at 1.15 and settle back to 1.00 over 15sec TX). But PEP on the P3TXMON can range from 10-15W up to ~400W on successive 15sec periods of TX using WSJT-X FT8 (going for very distant CQs). Adjusting the K3S power knob down may bring P3TXMON displayed power up if its 10-15W. If the P3TXMON shows 200W adjusting the K3S power knob up may bring the P3TXMON power shown down. Is that how it's supposed to work? I have a P3TXMON 2000W 1.8-54MHz unit installed on my feedline at the rig as follows: KAT500 to Common Mode Choke to P3TXMON to Bias-T to SG-235 remote ATU at antenna base to 43ft Vertical antenna, with some Lightning GDTs between at antenna base and home feedline entrance. My tuning practice is to change Frequency, turn KAT500 to BYP, tune the remote ATU, then set KAT500 to AUTO and let it adjust on 1st TX. I'm using a GPSDO to set my PC Clock uisng ToyNTP http://www.dxatlas.com/ToyNtp/ It keep time +/- 50 microseconds, which works great for digital work like WSJT-X. I have Network Time Protocol disabled in Administrative Services and I run ToyNPT as Administrator. It has worked fine for a year. Sometimes I get "SNTP Server: Unable to listen on Port 123" and reboot and it works OK. Just recently, something is grabbing that port, and won't let go. No new apps installed around the time the problem cropped up. Is there any way to find out what app is using Port 123? [Elecraft] Wattage Draw - K3S/100 vs KPA500/KAT500 - for UPS
As mentioned in another thread, I'm running my shack on a UPS that is rated 1500va/900w. With my K3S/100 and other hardware plugged in on the same input the UPS often max's out at 900W at < 100W on the K3S. Typically, the baseline with K3S on RX is ~350W and it spikes over 900W with TX at 100W and the UPS limits output. So it seems 100W isn't 100W. I'm looking to switch in another UPS rated 2200VA/1320W, or 420W higher, for use with the KPA500/KAT500 I just acquired from another forum member. so from a 100W station to a 500W station. Might this work or is the increase in watt TX not equal to the watt drawn? Yep - LOAD to Antenna. That's what I thought should be correct. So why I installed it backwards last August, I'll never know! I just reversed it. Numbers look spot on now. *And* I see the UPS I'm using appears to limit output if I exceed the power draw specification. I just installed the software for that UPS and see nowhere in the documentation that it doesn't just limit to maximum wattage but sharply cuts wattage output if I hit the limit. So many of my FT8 TX cycles have been dropped from 100W to 20-25W by the UPS circuit when I exceed the limit. I'll switch in another higher capacity UPS this week. On my K3S/100 using WSJT-X set up as per http://tiny.cc/K3S-WSJT-X with v1.80rc1 on FT8 I adjust my RF knob to a 30dB noise level. I often see ~10dB difference between even/odd 15sec cycles with no visible difference in background noise on the waterfall. That is, at 28-32dB on even I might see ~40db on odd. Is this just faint signals on one 15sec cycle not apparent on the waterfall on the other 15sec cycle? But if I hunt around for open waterfall areas I seem to always see that ~10dB difference. Hmmm... Yep. Elecraft is great for people who have less knowledge and less understanding as it take real effort to bust the hardware. But the same hardware and software can enable advanced users to get amazing results. The Company support is excellent, if you have to resort to it. But the Forum usually gets folks past any hurdles encountered other than pure hardware failure. I have the K3S/100 with trimmings and P3, and just added a KPA500/KAT500 and SP3 speakers. Misc wattmeters, directional couplers, P3SVGA, etc., await my learning. I know I won't easily smoke the hardware and will get sage guidance from the Elecraft Community. I know I'll figure out why I need a KPA1500 down the road, and know there will be an integration path. Other vendors dead-end hardware year after year, but Elecraft has a design philosophy that works for us and them. Glad I drank the KoolAid! [Elecraft] Remote ATU with KPA500/KAT500?
I have a used KPA500/KAT500 set arriving next week and plan to integrate into my shack which has a K3S/100 with Internal Tuner, and three antennas on 2 coax feed lines: 1. RG213 coax 1 runs to a 43ft Vertical with a D.C.-over-coax powered SG-235 remote ATU. I'm putting a MFJ-2910 80/160 Matching Coil on that soon. 2. RG213 coax 2 runs to a remote switch selecting a Par OA-50 6m horizontal loop 50ft up on a mast or a G5RV 102ft 40ft up with a LDG RT-600 remote ATU at base powered D.C.-over-coax. Both rATUs specify 100W max for tuning and to tune bypassing any amplifier. At present, I change bands and bypass the K3S internal ATU, transmit default 10W to activate the rATUs, then enable the internal K3S ATU and hit the ATU button to tune if the rATUs were much above 1:1. A lot on the integrated K3S/KPA500/KAT500 system seems defaulted to safeguards that prevent mistakes, which is great. How should I be thinking about using my rATUs with the addition of the KPA500/KAT500? I know I'll be bypassing the K3S internal ATU forever more. Is there a way to always bypass the KPA500 on band switch so as to not tune up with it enabled (assuming I should do so)? [Elecraft] [P3] P3TXMon Wattage/SWR
K3S100/KAT100 rig with P3, P3SVGA and P3TXMON Directional Coupler 200W. When TX at 100W, on 80m for example, the PEP on the P3 shows 2.4W PEP on the 120W scale and SWR is full scale at 99.0. I have put a Bird43 at my antenna base and verified 64W just before the SG-235 remote ATU on my 43ft Vertical (it's far away on RG213). SWR on KAT100 Bypass is 1.2 by remote ATU and down to 1.0 with KAT100 enabled. Must be I have things set up wrong on the TXMON? That alarm turned out to be my USP - the sound was hard to track down as it's on the floor. The USP is a CyberPower CP1500PFCLCD which is giving an Overload alarm on typically the last TX of a QSO at 100W. The specs are Output 1500VA 900W. I'm curious why power consumption increases with each 15sec FT8 TX, when I have a SWR 1:1 with a SG-235 antenna coupler at the base of my 43ft Vertical. PA Temperature runs about 40-42C when the overload alarm goes off.
