I don't use a desk mic, I prefer a headset, but pretty much any mic will sound

Spend your bux on antennas.

[Elecraft] Software testing

2016-04-15 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
I've written a settings saver for the K3. It should work on the K3S, but I
don't have one to test it on. The program reads every Menu and Config setting
that's readable, and stores it in a file. You can read a second radio and
compare the settings side-by-side. The program puts the radio into Tech Mode,
and switches between SSB and CW. The program DOES NOT load settings back into
the radio, and I have no plans to have it do so.

I'm looking for some hardy testers. If interested contact me off list, using
[K3Config] in the subject.

Please let me know your operating system(Windows XP thru Win10), your MCU
version, and whether you have the sub receiver. I need both K3 and K3S users.

[Elecraft] [K3] & fldigi

2016-01-22 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
I'm using a Mac, iMic and fldigi V3.23.00. It appears everything is set
correctly, but I'm not making RF.

I can't set the ALC to 4 solid with the 5th bar flickering. The minimum number
of bars is a solid 5, the line in at that point is 4. It makes no difference if
the iMic is set to Line or Mic. The audio cables are stereo.

Data sub-mode is AFSK A.

Re: [Elecraft] Microphone/Headset for K3S

2015-12-18 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
Hi Juliean -

Welcome to the hobby. You're starting off with the best. Yes, you can use your
computer headset. The K3s has an 8-band equalizer for both receive and
transmit, so with a bit of tinkering, you can get excellent sound.

My headset came with 1/8 plugs for both mic and phones. I plug them into the
jacks on the back panel. No adapters needed. And I'm not continually bumping
them. A foot switch plugs into the 1/4" jack labeled "PTT In" on the back panel.

Re: [Elecraft] Crackling in Headphones

2015-12-01 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
Has anyone contacted Elecraft support? This one seems to sorta fall into the
same category as the harsh/noisy receiver issue a few years back. AFAIR, that
one never was solved officially.

The issue is that nothing talks to the K3 at any rate other than 38400. The

[Elecraft] K3 KIO3

2015-11-24 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
I'm writing a Windows program for the K3. It connects at 38400 only. In trying
to figure out what's wrong, I set my P3 and K3 to 9600 and used the K3 Utility.
It will not connect.

If I set the K3 to 38400 and leave the P3 at 9600, the utility connects, but
reports it's connected at 9600.

Puzzlement is rampant.

To me, span and scale are different. Span is the number of units between two
points, scale is the physical size those end points cover.

Consider a map of the U.S. The span is 4000 miles. It's printed on a piece of
paper the size of a postage stamp. You don't see much detail. Now consider that
the same map is printed on a piece of paper 8.5 by 11. The span is still 4000
miles but the scale has changed dramatically, and now you can see some detail.

I'm rarely if ever interested in what's happening on both sides of a given
frequency, just usually up the band, less often down. If the paradigm was edge
to edge rather than center to edge..

Thanks for the discussion, Alan. I've deduced that the answer is no.

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Can I?

2015-11-20 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
I'm not doing a a good job of explaining I think.

The rig is at 3.524. I double-tap the Split button to equalize the VFOs, then
hold Split.
The P3 is set to a span of 10, i.e. -5 appears to the left, +5 appears to the
right.
I set the P3 to tracking mode and move the green cursor to the left edge of the
screen.

What I'm looking for is that when I tune either the B VFO or the B marker up
band, it reaches the far right edge of the screen when I get to 3.529, instead
of reaching 3.529 when it gets just to the right of the screen center.

In this set-up moving the B marker moves the A & B cursor and the marker and
changes the center freq. displayed on the screen. That isn't desirable.

I don't want to change the span, just the amount of real estate it covers.

Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Can I?

2015-11-19 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
Thanks Alan -

I'm still at sea about the span. With the A cursor at the left edge of the
screen reading 14.022.5 the span icon on the right shows a +5. If I tune higher
with B or B marker, I hit 14.027.5 a little to the right of the physical center
of the screen.

So is there a way to have that almost full screen from the A cursor on the left
edge to the right side of the screen cover 5 KHz? It sure would make it easier
to find the sweet spot in the pileup.

[Elecraft] [P3] Can I?

2015-11-18 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
Span is set at 10. When chasing DX split, is it possible to position the VFO A
cursor at the left edge of the display and have the right 5 kHz expanded over
the (almost) full screen?

In trying to achieve this, I got it so that when in tracking mode the A VFO
moves the magenta cursor as well as the A & B markers. The B VFO also moves the
magenta cursor. The green cursor doesn't move. Is this working as intended?

The filters you guys are discussing are roofing filters. The filtering you're

Re: [Elecraft] MacOSX Logging Software

After trying several Mac logging programs when switching from Windoze, RUMLog
is the clear winner for me. Focus on what meets your logging needs, they all
support Th K-series as far as control goes.

RUMLog ties in well with fldigi for digital modes, has a really good interface
to LoTW and cluster. It does not have built in rotor control, but I wrote a
program that talks to it via Apple script. http://nf4l.com and some fldigi
config notes.

Since you mention LoTW, I assume you are interested in DX. Tom DL2RUM is an
active DXer and it shows in his program. And RUMLog is free.

[Elecraft] KRC2

2015-06-11 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
My Ameritron RCS-12 automagic antenna switch is sulking, and not switching the
remote RCS-10.

I'm thinking of replacing it with a KRC2 pre-built. Is anyone using it with a
K3 and the Ameritron remote box? How difficult to configure it to work from the
K3 ACC with the RCS-10?

The manual has the line "The ACC menu entry can be used to directly control the
KRC2's accessory outputs.". I don't find any other reference. Whatsit mean?

Ken -

I agree that you'll most likely relegate the Eagle to second status. If you
hook the K3 up to the Centurion, be sure to follow the instructions for the K3.
It's different.

Fred Cady's (KE7X) book on the K3 is well worth having also. I bought it on CD
so I can search it, and I took the CD to Office Depot and had it printed. I
like to nap with it in the recliner..

[Elecraft] K3 no power

2015-04-04 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
My K3 puts out no power in any mode, either on the SteppIR or into a dummy
load. It's not in test or split. TX INH is off. Holding tune results in the LCD
displaying 0 W, and the VFO A area changes to 2 dashes on the right, no digits.
Tune power is set to 50W, Power to 100W.

A 50W TX Gain calibration passed, but still no joy.

It seems to be hearing OK.

What have I fat fingered?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 DATA A vs USB for JT65/JT9

2015-03-17 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
Per page 31 of the K3 owners manual sez

DATA A can be used for all audio-shift transmission modes, including AFSK and
PSK-31. VFO A shows the transmit suppressed carrier frequency and USB is normal
for DATA A. Compression is automatically set to 0 to reduce transmitted signal
distortion.

AFSK A is also an audio-shift transmission but is optimized for RTTY. VFO A
displays the RTTY mark frequency and LSB is normal. The built-in text decoder
and the dual-passband RTTY filter can be used.

I agree Bill, it's a real nuisance. Maybe Wayne can tack this onto his main

inconsistent behavior by mode.

[Elecraft] K3 logging, digital software

2015-03-01 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
My favorite logger (for Mac) has a new version, RUMLogNG. It has a control
screen for the K3/KX3 and one for the P3/PX3. Tom DL2RUM is still working on

It uses Fldigi for digital modes, and transfers data using an Applescript.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 and FLDigi

2015-02-25 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
With a lot of help from people here, it's working.

I'm using an iMic USB sound card. Sound setup in a Mac is tedious. Adjust the
level to 3 or 4 bars on the K3 ALC meter. I was unable to get the flickering
bar. My slider took me from 3 bars to 7 with the least I could move the slider.

In fldigi, select the Configure menu item, then Rig Control. On the dialog that
appears select the Rig tab, then the Hamlib tab.
For Rig, choose Elecraft K3/KX5 (Beta).
Device, choose the serial port that connects the 'puter to the K3.
Baud Rate to 38400(must match what the K3 is set to), 1 stop bit.
Sideband is Rig Mode
Check Use Hamlib and PTT via Hamlib command. Click Initialize, and Save.

I don't like this arrangement, because I want my logging program to connect to
the K3, but if this isn't set, then fldigi doesn't generate any tones. There
has to a way to key using VOX.

Select the Audio tab and set your sound IO. Click Save.

Operator info was filled in. Click Save and Close.

Click Op Mode and choose RTTY, then your RTTY flavor. That sets the box in the
lower left corner of the screen to RTTY. Don't click on that box and change
anything there.

There is a box and down arrow just under the frequency display. Set that and it
changes the mode on the K3, so I choose RTTY. The DATA sub-mode on the K3 is
AFSK A.

Any further info welcome!

Re: [Elecraft] A way to show both "SPLIT" and "NON-SPLIT" warnings

2015-02-18 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
If I forget to put on a belt or suspenders, maybe there could be a sensor at
the door that would staple my pants to my waist. I'm just not a fan of trying
to make up for someones lack of attention to the job at hand. A car ad I saw on
TV recently concluded with the statement that by virtue of all the safety
devices on board, it wasn't necessary to devote as much attention to driving. I
find that kind of thinking truly frightening.

Have I transmitted on the wrong VFO? Of course, and I take full blame for that.
It's not the radio's fault.

It is of course your company, and your decision. I'm not going to stop
vigorously supporting Elecraft.

Re: [Elecraft] A way to show both "SPLIT" and "NON-SPLIT" warnings

2015-02-18 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
If it's an option, OK, but I am convinced that if an op misses the existing two
indicators on the LCD display, and the Δf yellow LED, then more indicators
aren't gonna help. And I am unanimous in my opinion.

I'd much rather see the effort go into separating VOX for data from VOX for SSB.

Re: [Elecraft] Split operation - display of Transmit frequency on keydown

2015-02-18 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
G! No!

If someone, looking at the display, doesn't notice the SPLT, or the down arrow,
then I don't think another indicator is gonna do any good. I think the problem
lies in NOT looking at the radio in the passion of the chase.

If the radio is in split, and the VFO's are equal, then put a KV on the mic or
keyer.

[Elecraft] K3 Odd behavior

2015-02-02 Thread Mike Reublin NF4L
This morning I noticed something strange with #3539. On 80 & 160, tune only put
out 10W. The level is set for 44W. Full output is 44W, power set to 100W. SWR
with the AT in bypass is 1.3 on 80M, 1.2 on 160M. All this on ANT1. Power out
on 40M & up is as expected.

I connected a dummy load to ANT2, and while screwing the connector on, there
was a huge jump in the volume level on the 2nd receiver. The selected antenna
is still ANT1. This condition is for all bands. The main receiver performs as
expected, when ANT2 is selected, noise goes down.

For those of you with a Mac, there is now a working version of WSJT-X, thanks
to John G4KLA and some unknown behind-the-scenes elves. Their dedication and
determination to resolve the problems is... well..Elecraft like!
