[Elecraft] For Sale: K2 / 100 S/N:6959

2012-03-10 Thread NQ3RP
Hi everyone- Well the time has come to sell my station. I'm living in an RV
and the wife says it goes. Some I'm going to do 2M/440 until we are off the
road in 5-7 years. I have a K2/100 with the SSB, I/O, the Elecraft
microphone. Also included are an Astron 25A power supply with Anderson
Power plugs. The antenna is a KJ7U 6-160 screwdriver antenna with the whip.
I've used this radio on QRO, QRP and PSK31 to make hundreds of contacts.
But alas, I can't work mobile while driving the RV. My loss - your gain.
I'm asking $1750 (plus shipping) for the whole station set up. I'm at -

Re: [Elecraft] OT Carrying radios on commercial flight

2010-07-23 Thread NQ3RP

Alan -

Like any electronic device, you must be prepared to turn it on and
demonstrate that it works. This applies to computers, ipods, radios, etc.
I travel with my 2M/440 and just turn it on and pick up a local repeater,
bong it and get an answer. They usually say wow. I'm sure that if you can
turn them on and receive something it will suffice.

Re: [Elecraft] OT Carrying radios on commercial flight

2010-07-23 Thread NQ3RP

I never said that you would have a problem, never said I have had a problem.
I've never have had one, never been wiped and swiped, just my handheld is
only asked to be turned on. What I was saying is exactly what is said on:

http://www.tsa.gov/press/releases/2004/press_release_0401.shtm

That it will be subjected to more scrutiny which could be as simple as
turning it on. Or maybe as complicated as show me the insides or the wipe
and swipe. It IS UP TO the TSA official you deal with.

[Elecraft] K2 - KPA100 works but Tpa won't budge from 0 c. ??

2010-07-17 Thread NQ3RP

I've checked out the KPA100, have it operating on the hi Amp power supply and
it works great except for these two items:

 1. In Fan Menu, going to LoHi setting - the fan doesn't run. If I go
to the high it kicks in and runs.
When I first turned on the K2 (back when I was using the normal
12v supply it ran but after
  awhile it quit.
 2. In the TPA for the temperature will not change from 0 c. turning
the encoder.

Can't for the life of me figure out what might be causing this. Is it some
other parameter I have to change before doing these. Anyone experience
this?

[Elecraft] List Rule change, PLEASE!

2010-07-15 Thread NQ3RP

Eric, Wayne and Don -

I have read approximately 1500 of the post on this list. I have found some
of them very informative, while others are almost useless. Why?

Because there needs to be a basic rule change. I appreciate the fact that
you guys get back SO quickly when someone post a problem (ME). But 99 times
out of 100 all the resolution and responses are done OFF LIST. So those of
us who are doing research find NO resolution to the problem posted unless
the poster comes back and says what they found.

Could we PLEASE post all responses on list? This gives all of us a history
of what has transpired to resolve all the postings about perceived or actual
problems. In fact, don't answer any response that isn't done on the list.
I know, you are going to say that some posters don't read the list but
respond directly to the email posting. If we make it a rule that all
postings MUST be through the list or they are not responded to, everyone
will get used to doing it that way.

Thank you for listening and appreciate your comments.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 10W PA problem

2010-07-12 Thread NQ3RP

You say the power output stays the same. Is this into a dummy load and
measured with a good RF watt meter (like Bird)? If that is the case then
due to power staying the same, the resistance the PA sees must be
decreasing. Is this happening on all bands or just one or two? This could
be related to the LPF causing it if only one or two, need to check those
items in the LPF causing it. If it is all bands, I would check the items on
the output side of T2 for correct value and soldering.

Re: [Elecraft] K2 Tilt Bale Installation

2010-07-01 Thread NQ3RP

Mount the plastic holders to the bottom first thing. Next take a loop of
strong twine and tie it tight around the legs of of the bail so the loop is
about tight but not quit. Take a short screwdriver and place it in between
the twine loops between the legs. Start twisting the the loop by turning
the screwdriver in a circle. In a short time the tightening of the twine
loop will pull the legs in enough to insert them in the mounting. Be VERY
careful on releasing the screw driver by untwisting so that it doesn't get
away from you.

[Elecraft] 1st contact on my new K2

2010-06-22 Thread NQ3RP

Well I finished 6959 a week ago and had been busy building a SWR/power meter
to see actual output going into the antenna. Sitting at my bench during a
null in kit building activity, I figured the time had come to test this
puppy out. I was listening on 20m so I tuned a little off of the
conversation I had been eaves dropping on and heard a strong signal -
VY1/DL1FDH working all kinds of 8's,7's, 6's and an occasional 4 5. He
said he was on Prince Edward Island in Nova Scotia. So I waited for all the
others to give their call sign after a QRZ and threw mine out at about 5
watts SSB - NQ3RP November Quebec Three Romeo Papa with the nervousness of
my very first QSO some twenty years ago. NQ3RP came the replay - I was in!!
Tom, it turns out, was in Canada for a holiday from Germany and working some
North American stations. I gave him a 59 and he likewise gave me a 59, I
don't believe it but I will take it. He said I was very strong into P.E.I.
with my 5 watts. As we signed off, my wife was standing behind me and she
asked why I was shaking so much. I guess it was just the excitement of this
first contact and knowing that this little radio I built had just made it's
first of many contacts. Just thought I'd share this story and hope to see
you on the air soon!

Re: [Elecraft] K2 not able to receive WWV other signal problems

2010-06-11 Thread NQ3RP

Just a post to tell you about the resolution of my K2 not hearing WWV and
other receiver problems. I was in e-mail contact with Don and after going
through what was going on with the BFO and VFO, he suggested checking the
voltages on U5 pin 7 and there was no voltage there when doing PLL. Which
was strange because I did get a Band plus reading and a - Band reading on
the PLL span test. So we went back to check U5 pins 1,2,3 to U6 on CB. No
continuity from U6 pin 24 to U5 pin 2. I checked the soldering then pulled
U6. Pin 24 was bent over and not making contact.

I then used Spectrogram to set C22 on WWV, did the PLL linearization in
about 4.5 minutes, and set the filters with Spectrogram also. I think this
K2 is the hottest of the 3 I've built.

So I just want to thank Don for sticking in there, giving insight into how
the circuitry works and suggesting the simple things I over looked (like
checking signal continuity!). Now on to the SSB and noise blanker.

Don, you're da MAN!!

[Elecraft] K2 not able to receive WWV other signal problems

2010-06-10 Thread NQ3RP

Well after finishing the set up of my K2 I thought I'd give it a work out. I
put it on 40 meters and started listening to some code-great. Or so I
thought until I switched filters - nothing on FL2-4. Then I got to checking
more. Seems like the CW was present on some parts of the band and not on
other parts. Also a CW signal is over a 5Khz area and NEVER changes tone -
just there and then later just gone. That just doesn't sound right.

So maybe I should check calibrations again. Hmm.. Back to the 4 mhz
oscillator and let's try WWV at 10 Mz. This is when I noticed something
else really strange. No WWV signal or it is very low even with audio and rf
gain all the way up but couldn't be sure . I just notice some
bumm-bumm-bumm, like nothing at all, not the normal tones. Set C22 back to
the default location get out a signal generator and set it at 10 Mhz -
nothing heard. Set it to 10.06 and tune the K2 - hey I can zero beat it
there. The minute I try to go below 10.05 on the K2 to zero beat a
generator signal set somewhere below 10.05 - it's like the K2 is on some
other band or part of the 30M band. If I come up from the bottom it does
the same thing at 9995.0 is ok to zero beat but anything between 9995 and
10.05 is out in la-la land. Appears it's happening on all the bands at
various places.

I'm at a loss as to what is going on and what might be wrong. I've checked
the receive circuits and tuned them and they seem to work. Parts of each
band work on CW and SSB (no ssb module at this time but can hear
conversions). But parts of each band seem to do this act of going to some
other place and it usually happens around a 5Khz display (like 7105-7115,
9995-1005, etc.) Any ideas on what is screwed up or where to look??

[Elecraft] K2 S/N 6959 is alive!

2010-06-09 Thread NQ3RP

That's the good news, now for the rest of the story.

I received the K2 about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I started putting it together
(without inventorying - hey the other two had all the parts so why not this
one). Went all the way to Part 1 alignment. Ut -ow, I had two right side
panels. No problem, emailed parts and they sent the side along via Priority
Mail. So let's keep going. Ow no, I put an MV209 in backwards, removing it
I broke a lead off. Ok, parts will send one along. Two weeks later, I'm
still waiting. Good thing I found one at a friends house in his diode
parts. So let's continue the building. Need to put the four 1-30pf caps
in. Lets see, they should be here in the pan with the 50's right. No, none
there, not even one. Ok, lets call parts. Oh, we're out of the 1-30's so
we'll send some 1-40's along. OK, WHY WEREN'T THOSE INCLUDED IN MY KIT?
Well guess what, they sent them along first class mail, 5 days with nothing
to do but wait so I could finish this radio. Well they got here today. Now
it's finished and on the air. Now I have to build the SSB, noise blanker
100A mods.

Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking Elecraft. But sometimes you only
hear the good stories. This one is not so good, I'm afraid.

Re: [Elecraft] Would you be interested in a K2 PSK31 digital interface card?

2010-06-07 Thread NQ3RP

Guy -

The boards as designed by EA3BLQ did not provide a line out audio signal,
so using one of his boards would not provide the type audio you are seeking.
While Tom's (N0SS) board does provide a fixed audio, it also requires that
you make solder connections to the Control Board of your K2. If you are
comfortable with doing that, then I suggest you ask Tom for his files and
have a couple of boards made. Please contact Tom @ N0SS (at) arrl.net for
any more discussion about your needs. I'm trying to keep this discussion
only about those that are interested in the K2DI PCI boards, thank you.

[Elecraft] Would you be interested in a K2 PSK31 digital interface card?

2010-06-06 Thread NQ3RP

I've tried to find one of EA3BLQ's interface cards for the K2 but have not
been successful. So I thought I would design a replacement since I've done
PCB designs before. The problem is that if I do it, to keep the cost down,
I would have to make a couple of dozen boards. So I wondered if there was
any interest out there in obtaining one of his boards. My main interest is
in making the K2DI VIII board on this page
http://www.qsl.net/ea3blq/k2di_pci_tec_ang.htm . If you would like one
please post a reply here. If I get enough responses I'll see about doing
the run. If you want the K2DI PCI card also please state that also. If I
get two dozen the cost should be about $20 per board ($40 for the two).
If you would like a complete kit state that also. I could do the kit for
around $49.50 for both boards and the electronic parts.

I had a similar problem on one of my older K2s. It would jump frequency
when I started to transmit. I pulled the Control CPU, cleaned the socket

corrosion. Wouldn't hurt removing it, would it? Might fix it.

2010-06-01 Thread NQ3RP

Steve -

Great work. I have 6959 that I got a day or two later than you. I have
finished the Part 1 test with no problem. This is my 3rd K2 (406 3638
done before). All I can add to what has been suggested is this Check
every component before you soldered it in. Sometimes I even turn the board
around (front to rear) just to get a better perspective and ensure that I'm
doing it correct. But since you have it finished you can't do that now.
Also I ALWAYS inspect the board after finished with a magnifier to make sure
all pads are soldered and not shorted or left open.

I would suggest that you pull the front panel and reheat every connection.
On the switches you can heat them on the front side and add some solder (the
pins don't always go through the board). That way they will make contact
through the plated through hole. Good luck finding the problem.
