[Elecraft] SSB shift frequency

2016-02-02 Thread Paul VanOveren
Somehow, I have evidently changed something on my K3. When I change from CW
to SSB, the FC is 1.75 instead of 1.50, so I have to move it to the left to
get it back to 1.50. How do I get it set to 1.50 and stay there on all
bands. I cant tell if it is band specific or not.

[Elecraft] Love me K3 line

2016-01-31 Thread Paul VanOveren
I have worked both S Sandwich and S. Georgia Islands on 4 bands and CW and
SSB for ATNOs, # 343 and 344 for my DXCC credits. When I sold my Alpha 374
3 holer amp and purchased the KPA 500 I was somewhat concerned about the
pwr output difference. However I have worked probably 15 ATNOs since the
switch and have NOT missed working any station that I have wanted to work.
The P3 w/SVGA added is a great tool, particulary on CW, looking for a hole
to call in when the DX is listening 5 to 20 Kcs up...

Re: [Elecraft] Phonema Speaker for K3

2014-09-05 Thread Paul VanOveren
I use the Yeasu Vertex mobile speakers (2) with my K-line, and my K3 has
the sub receiver and they seem to work very well. I wear hearing aids and
have tinnitus and when in CW mode, no problems. I use the Yamaha c-500
headset/boom mike when I operate SSB. The speakers are hooked to the back
panel of the K3, thru a splitter from Radio Shack. And the price is right,
$49.00 each.

I just checked Universal Radio pricing on speakers from the big 3 JA
factories and it appears they sell speakers ranging from 100 to 290

Looking at the list of matching speakers from YaeComWood at HRO shows
all of them, except the Kenwood SP-23, to include audio filtering at an
approximately $190 price point. The SP-23 is $85. The Yaesu SP-9000
is an interesting outlier ($325) but it contains *two* speakers and
filter sets (main and second receivers).

To be competitive, the Phonema product would need to add selectable
low/high cut filtering at the current price point. Without filtering,
the SP-23 is a more appropriate benchmark (65EUR at current exchange
 rates).

I checked the link sent to me from Joe and will give a pair a try.
After all, for $18.60 a pair it won't break the bank and I cannot
imagine they are as a bad as the one in my K3.

For the benefit of others - that link is the Pyle 3.5 cube speakers
on Amazon. Their specs are 90 - 18000 Hz (comparable to the Phonema).
I've had them on my K3 for a week now and although they are a bit
light on the low end compared to two way bookshelf speakers, they
are an excellent performer. I give them about 6dB of boost in the
200/400 Hz RX EQ and set 50/100 Hz to -16 dB (prevents DAC clipping
at high volume levels) and they even sound acceptable when SWLing on
 the broadcast band.

Re: [Elecraft] WRTC-2014 fun

2014-07-14 Thread Paul VanOveren
Jan, I had fun also, with my K3, operated about 7 hours total, 74 yrs young
is too many to stay up all nite, Made 314 cw qsos, and worked 54 of the 59
stations, a total of 98 times on 3 bands, 20, 40 80. Missed 5 for a
clean sweep of all 59. Those ops were unbelievable, pulling one call out of
the pileups and very few times having to ask for a repeat. I guess that is
why they are the cream of the crop, of the contestors from around the
world. Just curious, I know the last one in 2010 in Russia, I heard that
40+ K3s were on the operator tables. Wonder if someone from Elecraft will
share with us how many were used this time.

The static PA temps compare. Is this a normal range for the K3 with a

 Hi Mike,

Your question is interesting. If you're in a contest you must be using a
contest program. Do you want another program running on the PC that would
require you to leave the confines of your contest program? I think not.

You would probably want the contest program to have a direct tie-in to the
P3 over the existing K3/P3 serial link. Something like holding the shift
 key
causes the mouse to talk to the P3. Releasing the shift key returns control
to the contest program. That could be interesting but would involve the
 contest program developer(s).

I suppose the alternative is a corded or wireless USB mouse connected
directly to the back of the P3. Then you would have two mice on your desk
which is probably even less desirable during the heat of a contest (unless
 you're ambidextrous).

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Speakers for K3

2013-04-23 Thread Paul VanOveren
I use 2 of the Yeasu MLS100 speakers thru a stereo adapter into the back
speaker jack of the K3. They are small, black and I think nice looking in
the K Line equipped shack, Main receiver on the left, sub receiver on the
right or both on with sub receiver off. Work very well in my opinion, and
only $49.00 each at AES...

desirable for a lot of folks where you could install your preferred speaker.
Look at how many $200 speakers with filters have been sold by the big3 to
 match their radios.

I've used small ones, a kenwood one and currently using an old classroom
public address speaker. It seems the large ones are hard to find around
 here.

I've also finally got rid of my hiss/roar/frying bacon with the addition
of a external equalizer and mainly pushing the 3.5 slider of the unit to -4

RFI was a bit of a problem for my close antenna.

[Elecraft] P3 Question ?

2013-03-10 Thread Paul VanOveren
Installed the SVGA board in my year old P3 a couple of days ago and when it
is first turned on for the day, there is a blip on the spectrum window and
a considerable trace in the waterfall window on the extreme left side of
the large monitor...it starts to move immediately, very slowly from left to
right, with the waterfall trace trailing from right to left of course and
then within a couple of minutes (guessing at the time) exits off the
screen, not to be seen again. Is this normal, anybody else seeing this??
Noticed it on 17 and 20 meters, have not checked the other bands yet...

[Elecraft] Meteor explosion in Chelyabinsk, Russia

2013-02-18 Thread Paul VanOveren
Many on this reflector may know Willy, UA9BA, (UK9AAN) (UP2L) He is
probably one of the most well known Russian hams..He and I have been
friends since 1977. Here is the return email I received from him regarding
his
Vladimir Umanets
Feb 16 (2 days ago)
to Paul
Hey buddy!!!

Yes we're ALL fine!

I was at my office with window jalousie closed. The windows are looking
North.
The meteor exploded about 20km South of Chelyabinsk and 50 km high. So the
explosion couldn't
be seen from my windows. Nevertheless it was like this - it started getting
brighter and brighter in my office
for about 1,5 second then it got very bright for maybe ,5 second, so
bright that I almost got blind for a moment and then
the light quickly disappeard. I was asking myself what could that be and
thought of a nuclear explosion and waited for two minutes
if anything else would follow, but nothing happened. But in one more minute
this horroble very long and loud crashing sound came!
The whole building was quaking with this sound and I clearly felt that the
sound and the force came from the above. We all were
ordered to leave the building and when we came out we saw this two line
trace turning into one line trace with junction point just
above our heads and little bit to the South. This cloud was very big and it
seemed in very close proximity even though it turned out
to be over 50 km away. I looked around and found out that lots and lots of
windows were broken. The ambulances started coming in
and I saw many people were injured and bleeding some couldn't walk by
themselves. It was a very frustrating expirience and many
people are still under shock. Even I go over and over those moments and
don't feel normal, still kind of excited or something.
I don't know what frightened me more the spectacular light, or the hit
wave, or those bleeding people. All this happened on Friday
morning at the plant I work for. The plant loss is estimated at 85 000 000
R which is en equivl. of 1.5 month salory of our 1900
employees. The plant lost about 25000 sq.m of windows, over 50 doors, lots
of equipment (measuring, PCs and so on).
This was the day I will remember till my last day. My family is OK. My
house (42 km South of Chelyabinsk) lost its windows and that was
the only damage to my family. By the way, this explosion woke up my 81 year
old mother with its spectacular light. She lives in Troitsk
136 km South of Chelyabinsk. The hit wave came 6+ minutes later and was
very strong as mother said.

That's how it was. I now feel like I trust in God more and more...

Re: [Elecraft] KX3 in the ARRL International DX contest

2013-02-18 Thread Paul VanOveren
Jim, fantastic results with the KX3. Have not had the chance to use one
yet, but had a great time with my K3(758) the KPA 500 and the P3 in the
contest. Age is 73 so can't sit in the op chair very long anymore, but did
manage 600 qs, 190 multipliers and 342,000 pts in about 14 hrs of S P
only. TH11DX was the antenna. Cut the bandwith down with the 250 Hz cw
filter and backed off on the RF gain and that really helped on 10 meters,
where the signals were rather weak, the solar flux being only 100 or so...
congrats, nice effort..

Gave the KX3 a workout in the ARRL International DX contest this past
weekend. I hooked it up to the KPA500 and with the KX3 set to 5 watts out,
I got between 130 and 138 watts out of the KPA500 which, naturally varied
between bands with 130 out on 10 and just shy of 140 on 160.

Bands were in pretty good condition and propagation from Kansas to most of
the rest of the world turned out to be almost great. The money bands
turned out to be 15 and 10 meters, but got a goodly number of contacts on
20 and 40 as well. I did make a few on 80 and 160 to boot. Total # of
contacts 444, total QSO points 1332, multipliers 211 for a total claimed
score of 285,052 points. Total operating time over the contest was 14
hours out of the 48 total. Entry was in the Single Op, Unassisted, Low
 Power category.

My friend and neighbor that runs an Alpha 9500 amp and used to overload
the front end of any rig I had before the K3 was absent from this contest
for some reason so I didn't get to run the KX3 under really extreme
conditions. It never exhibited a selectivity or overload problem that I
noticed. I operated in search and pounce mode most of the time, doing a
CQ run only on 10 meters during a time when it was just marginally open on
Saturday afternoon. Even running S P I got my QSO rate up over 65/hour
for several short periods on both 15 and 10 meters and the last few minutes
 of the contest on 40.

I had the iPad and iSDR running for the panadapter and it was really
nice to be able to view the weak stations in reference to the big guns
and with the roughly 150 watts out of the KX3/KPA500 combination, if the
station was over S5, I had no trouble working them. Amazing how much
better the op's ears get in a contest, even with good propagation. As I
was tuning up the band, I watched the panadapter rather than the radio and
could easily see if I passed over a station that wasn't transmitting when I
rolled over their frequency if I didn't tune too fast. Really helps when
working S P. The iPad/iSDR combo is nowhere near as good as the P3, but
since the P3 doesn't work with the KX3, it had to do. I've gotten so used
to the K3/P3 combination in a contest (or even general operating for that
matter) that if my P3 died for any reason, I'd stay out of a contest until
I got it fixed, it's that valuable to me!

40 opened early, or maybe it had been open all along and the EU stations
just moved there for the last hour of the contest, I don't know.
Regardless, I switched to 40 during the last 45 minutes I operated (shut
down about 5:45 p.m. local - 23:45 UTC), started right at the bottom of the
band and worked every EU station I heard calling CQ. Funny, the US big
gun stations were all calling CQ and getting nothing. I got there first
and grabbed 'em while things were quiet and I didn't have to try and bust
many pileups (which didn't seem to be much of a problem either) so during
that last 45 minutes, I picked up 40 of the 46 stations worked on 40.

 Managed 10 on 80 and 7 on 160. Worked on all 6 bands were KH7X and HK1NA.

Logging was with N3FJP's latest ARRLDX program (version 3.0) and I used a
Griffin PowerMate set next to the keyboard to control the KX3's frequency,
sharing the com port via a commercial port sharing program.

Overall, the KX3 performed very well, it's RX sensitivity is outstanding,
the NR isn't perfect, but it did help some, especially on 80 and 160. It
wasn't really needed on the other bands as signals were so far above any
noise for the most part that it was easy to work them.

[Elecraft] Am I missing something?

I saw a couple of references here on the reflector about the 4.51 Beta firmware
now being a production release. I do not see it on the Elecraft website under
firmware category and I checked in the K3 Utility 1.12.3.28 ver.Mine reads

  MCU Installed 4.48available
4.39
  FPF 1.15
 1.14
  DSP 1 2.73
   2.73
  DSP 2 2.73
   2.73
  DVR 1.03

If I check versions available, it does not change. The K3 is communicating

There is no mechanism in the K3 Utility to change the FTP source URL. Copy
new files from Elecraft always goes there.

But your local Wininet cache may be stale. Use Internet Explorer (not
another browser that may not use Wininet) to navigate to that URL and

MCU Installed 4.48
 available 4.39
FPF 1.15 1.14
DSP 1 2.73 2.73
DSP 2 2.73 2.73

Re: [Elecraft] Happy But Very Sad

2012-06-22 Thread Paul VanOveren
You read one bad review on Eham and make that kind of statement.. .Out in
the real world the K3 has a bad rep for splatter and imd3 pro I have K3
# 758, now over 4 yrs old, and have run it at 100 watts (as recommended)
barefoot, into a Alpha 76 PA @ 50 watts and now into a Elecraft KPA 500 with
25-30 watts. After more than 5500 qsos over the 4 yrs, ragchewing, chasing
dx and contesting, I have had the following numbers of bad audio,
splattering or key clicks reports, 0 , zero, nata, none, zlich.
IMHO, to make a statement like that (without any documentation) is
reckless and unwarranted. I have heard many reports from owners and others,
about the FT5000 re: key clicks, splattering, etc, but certainly would not
go on the Yeasu reflector and spread such stuff around.

K3 a superior transmitter in imd product results? Your kidding right?

http://www.eham.net/ehamforum/smf/index.php/topic,75182.0.html

Those of us with K3's running 15v PS with heavy cable inputs, driving clean
amps escape the wrath of the imd police.
The 5000 is way better esp in class A operation.

A fully-loaded K3 is about $4900, and that assumes 8 pole filters in all
slots in both receivers. A fully loaded FT-5000 is $5600. The FT-5000
exceeds the K3's receiver performance in one category, and trails the K3 in
every other RX performance category. The K3 also has a superior transmitter,
as evidenced by the IMD numbers in ARRL test results and elsewhere.

[Elecraft] P 3 COCKPIT ERROR I AM SURE.

2012-06-20 Thread Paul VanOveren
I must have changed something in the configuration of my P3... With the cursor
type set as “bar” and in the the “finest” rate, 3 # to the right of the
decimal, everything is fine. In the next coarser rate, 2 # to the right of
decimal, I get a line, like the B marker is on, on the left edge of the curser.
In the coarsest rate, 1 # to the right of the decimal, if I tune the A VFO
rather rapidly, I get flashing B marker lines, above and below the center
frequency curser..
Maybe what I am asking is how to shut the Purple VFO cursor off, it moves
with either the A VFO or the B VFO..

[Elecraft] Ham Radio Apps for Android Phones

My good friend, W8DA has written several apps for Android phones and
Android Tablets, including, Morse Trainer, Morse Decoder, DTMF, DX Cluster,
NCDXF Beacon, Droid PSK, Droid RTTY and now Droid SSTV. These allow you to
simply place your Android Phone or Tablet by the speaker of your Transceiver
and receive any of them and with a simple interface also transmit, PSK, RTTY
and SSTV. I have NO financial interest in Wolfgangs enterprise, he is simply a
good friend and innovative programmer.

This is interesting,
It begs the question:
Where can one get such BT (blue tooth) devices itself to interface the
phone with the radio?
Also, the author noted that BT is still in experimental stage due to
noise during transmit.

I wud love to get my K2 on PSK.

Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net cancellation

2012-02-20 Thread Paul VanOveren
Does it really matter if the report is 559 or 599, the important part is
that you get the call sign CORRECT and the zone, country, serial # or
power. That is what the contest managers require, that you can copy all the
information correctly. As mentioned earlier, the 599 is more or less a
preamble to getting the power, country, or serial number, which is the
important part of the exchange in addition to the call sign. I could care
less, even during a non-contest qso what report the other station gives me
for a report, if he gets my call sign correct and maybe my name and qth, I
don't give a rip what his S meter reads.. What I do not understand is the
stations that run at 50+ wpm. Many of us that run at 25-30 wpm simply bypass
them and go on to someone we can copy on the first time. I guess that there
are the top notch ops that can copy at 50+ but eventually they are going
to have worked all/most of them and my thinking is that perhaps they might
work more stations by slowing down a bit..YOMV.

Paul NF8J

Why be upset with a 599? Because of that very same variability; it is highly
unlikely that you will have exactly the same propagation to different parts
of the world at the same time, so why should you accept the same report from
all contacts without question?

had to set the menu AUXBUS to ON. (the default is OFF) And the 2 power

[Elecraft] This is weird. K3

2011-02-27 Thread Paul VanOveren
All of a sudden my K3 # 758 is acting weird. It recognizes the ATU in that
the little ATU is present on the display, but no signals are received in the
radio, only a hiss. If I try to adjust the power setting it will read
from 0.10mw and - 10.0 db to 1.5 mw and 1.8 db on the display, it stays
there for only a second or two and then the display return s to normal.

Altho the atu is showing on the display and I tap the tune button, the
display changes to NO ATU and the normal clicking sounds is not there.

When I hold the XMT button to perform the Tune function, the display changes
to 1.8 db and 1.5 mw rather than the swr and power, it does change to the cw
mode however.
This all happened after I unhooked the rs232 cable from the back of the K3
so I could plug in my Yamaha CM-500 headset, which I removed for a day. Just
for grins I went to the K3 Utility and did the resore K3 configuration
button. Presto, signals back, power control normal, ATU clicking again, Tune
fuction reading swr and power...I am so glad, but can anyone tell me why
removing the cable from the laptop to the K3 evidently corrupted something?

Sincerly,

[Elecraft] Glitch with N1MM and K3

2010-06-24 Thread Paul VanOveren
BlankThis question should be asked on the N1MM reflector on Yahoo Groups but I
can not register for some reason. I am setting up N1MM for FD, and everything
works fine except for the second macro.

F1 - CQ FD K8DAA K8DAA
F2 - ! 4a 4a mi mi
F3 - tu K8DAA

PROBLEM, when I hit the enter key after typing in the call of the other
station, the ESM sends K8DAA without interruption and then the call of the
other station and then the report...I have the ! to begin the F2 macro report,
but it sends my call first The other function keys work fine, from F4 to
F12, with the macros set up as I request. . Also, after entering the call of the
other station and hit the F2 key rather than the enter key, it works fine, just
the call of the other station and the report...can not figure out what I have
done incorrectly. Hitting the enter key after typing in the report from the
other station, sends tu and K8DAA (my call). Obviously, I have the ESM mode
checked in the CONFIG window, and the RUNNING box checked. If I uncheck the
RUNNING box then of course, the program changes to Search and Pounch and then
after typing in the call of the other station, hitting enter sends the reply
correctly, the call of the other station and the report..but F2 and F3 do not
function.

Sincerely,

[Elecraft] Email address change

2009-12-26 Thread Paul VanOveren
To the gang:

Finally upgraded to a high speed internet provider and consequently,
my email address is changing... n...@wolphi.com is the new one. So, please
use this one. The n...@iserv.net will be active for a few more days but then
be gone. Would like to remain in contact with you, so if you would make that
change, I would appreciate it, MERRY XMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL !!!

[Elecraft] I screwed up.

2009-11-09 Thread PAUL VANOVEREN
Playing around with my K3 serial # 756 and the setting for N1MM and changed
the DTR-RTS, or PTT settings and now the radio is in transmit always on the 60
meter band and when I push the MENU, COFIG button, the firmware version comes
up, but if I rotate the B VFO to try and get to some other menu item, it locks
up, turning to the right bet to FL1 and locks and turing to the right byp
kat3 and locks up. Is there some way to do a soft or hard reset and bring
everything back to the default settings ??? Can't find it in the owners
manual...sorry..

2009-07-29 Thread PAUL VANOVEREN
Had the two knobs split on the AF shaft of my K3- serial # 758 last Friday.
Sent a note to Elecraft Parts, had an email back Saturday and the two new knobs
arrived in Michigan today, Wednesday the 29th.

[Elecraft] K3 - Cockpit erro

2009-07-22 Thread PAUL VANOVEREN
Yesterday, when fooling around in the Config:Menu, and experimenting with
the TX-EQ, I must have hit some buttons by mistake. My CW memories, set up in
the Elecraft Utility, no longer work as before. Now the TX EQl info shows up
when I push on the the M1-M4 message buttons... Can someone tell me how to
clear the preferences that I seem to have set up inadvertantly. Do I have to do
some sort of soft reset ?? I can not find the information in the manual.
Running 3.11 firmware, K3 is serial no. 758...
The CW memories in the Utility have not changed, they just will not run.

[Elecraft] K3, Cannot key amplifier

2009-07-09 Thread PAUL VANOVEREN
My K3, serial number 758, firmware 3.11, 215, will not key my Alpha 76
amplifier. There is no voltage present at the Key Out jack, with the K3 in SSB
and the Vox on, or in CW mode, with the Vox on. The only way to key the amp is
to use the PTT button on the Heil Gold Line mic. With the PTT pushed there is
keying and output from the amp, both in SSB and CW. I suspect that it is a
firmware problem but have gone thru the Config Menu and cannot figure out what
settings may be wrong and perhaps need to be changed. I have taken the Bencher
paddle out of the Winkeyer and inserted directly into the K3, but this does not
make any difference.

I used it on Field Day, without the amp of course and it performed
flawlessly. The K3 has the 100 watt module, the ATU, KXVC module.

Sincerely,

NF8J

[Elecraft] K3 wierd action.

2009-06-12 Thread PAUL VANOVEREN
The last couple of days, on 20 meters, 14.070 in data mode for psk31, the TX
led lights up intermittently, and the audio make clicking sounds. Of course,
while watching the waterfall, the traces are interupted by the radio going into
transmit, and I can not print the data on the screen. I am using HRD and DM 780
and have been operating for the last yr and a half with no problems. I powered
the radio off and the power supply off and when turning on the ps and the K3, I
get an error message on the B vfo line. ERR-Key, and then the banner scrolls
and the error message goes away. I cannot find in the owners manual any
reference to ERR KEY. When I switch the K3 to the Test Mode, the TX led
does not light of course, but the traces continue to be interrupted by the
radio going into transmit.. As far as I can tell, this behavior does not happen
in any other mode. The K3 is serial # 758 and the firmware is 3.11 and the DSP
is 2.15. Anyone have a suggestion of something I might ch
 eck.

[Elecraft] K3 Wierd action

2009-06-12 Thread PAUL VANOVEREN
To all of those who replied to my problem, Thanks. I unplugged everything
connected to the radio. Turned down the Vox gain and powered down the K3 a
couple of times and I no longer get the ERR-KEY message. The scrolling banner
is the first to appear and the K3 is no longer transmitting intermittently
while in the data mode. Again thanks to all those who helped..

[Elecraft] K3- problem with no text on psk31, 30 meters

2008-10-18 Thread PAUL VANOVEREN
My local friend put up a new 30 meter dipole and we had made contact on 20
meters psk, no problem. When I changed the K3 to 30 meters and called him, he
said I had only sent a carrier, he could hear the psk signal, but NO TEXT.. I
noticed on the the display a T in the lower right corner of the display. The
manual says on page 12, T indicates FM /tone, or CW/data text decode.. I have
never seen this when operating on 20 meter psk.. but changing bands it does
appear on every band when the mode is set to Data. On 20 meters is does not
appear... I have made over 700 qsos on 20 psk since May.. what am I doing
wrong.. I am using HRD and DM780 for psk software...

[Elecraft] K3 - no rf in data mode (psk) after download of firmware.

2008-06-20 Thread PAUL VANOVEREN
I did my first download of the firmware tonite and now have no rf output, (1
bar) when transmitting on psk. If I hit the tune button, the mode changes to CW
and the meter shows the 25 watts of rf. Can someone tell me how to undo the new
firmware, I was perfectly happy with how the radio (#758) worked before I
screwed it up.

Tnx,
