[Elecraft] Intermittent KPA-1500 SWR problem

2024-04-18 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Readers may recall that I had been asking for help with an intermittent
problem causing my KPA-1500 to trip due to high SWR.  It would happen
3-4 times in 10 minutes and then not happen again for hours.

A couple of weeks ago, a local KPA-1500 owner suggested that the problem
was due to a timing error in the T/R switching of the 1500, and
suggested I address this by reverting to version 2.58 firmware instead
of the latest release.  I did so, and since then I have had not a single
recurrence.

If this is a known issue, I wonder why it hasn't been fixed in the later
releases?

since the lone "report" can not be peer reviewed it is impossible

Re: [Elecraft] Weird K-3 Power Behavior

2024-04-06 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Yes - although there have also been some analysis done that seems to
show that, in FT8,  with any ALC bars visible, signals begin to widen
out, and at 4 bars there is a lot of junk between signals.  Just
repeating what I've been told -  I don't have the ability to check this
myself.

I was running FT8 just below 1 bar, and found the driving power to my
amp took 7 or 8 transmit periods to get to full power each time I
adjusted my power, even by a tenth of a watt.  I'm now running 3 bars
(third flickering) and power-up behavior is much better.

To keep the audio drive for digital modes correct set so the 5th bar
just flickers.  Less than that the audio drive will ramp up and
produce "power hunting" at the output.  More than that, you will go
into distortion (ALC Compression) which will not produce the cleanest
signal.

The Fred Cady books also agree on that.

Yes, after any power adjustment, the audio system does start at
lower gain, quickly ramping to the desired level.  This is done to
prevent any potential power overshoot.  After the initial
transmission at the new power setting, the remainder of
transmissions are at the proper power level setting.

[Elecraft] Mysterious K3 Symptoms - RFI? : Important addendum

2024-03-13 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Operating in this morning's CWT, and saw a recurrence of strange
RFI-like symptoms.  After transmitting, RX gain sometimes was severely
reduced, but simply moving the K-3's AF gain a little would cause
recovery to normal.  Sometimes, this was accompanied by a HI CURR
warning on the K3's display, often occurring several seconds after
switching back to receive.

My working theory has been RFI, but my station is pretty thoroughly
fitted with toroids. Still, there seems to be a correlation between
running my KPA-1500 at about 1100 watts and this set of symptoms, which
I have not been able to trigger running 100 watts   To further confuse
things, I just had another episode of this occurring *several minutes*
after the last transmission.

[Elecraft] K3 Fault 6 and loss of power control

2024-03-06 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Today I started seeing this in my K3 driving a KPA-1500.  It only needs
around 30-34 watts to drive it to full power on CW, but when I set the
K3's power to that, and everything looks fine, occasionally the K3
displays Fault 6 on its panel and causes the KPA-1500 to fault,
displaying 65 watts input on the amp's display and well over 1500 watts
on the power bargraph.

I can't find any reference to Fault 6 in the manual for the K3 - can
anyone clue me in?  Is something dying in the K3?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Sub-RX Deaf on One Band

Yep - I tried to check that sort of thing, which I have been known to
do.  The sub-RX , on this one band, acts like it is disconnected from
the antenna.

This afternoon I worked TX5S split on 10 and 15.  Tonight, I was hearing
him very well on 80, but to my surprise my SubRX seems to have gone deaf
on that band.  I've verified that it's still working fine on all other
HF bands, including 160, but for some reason no 80.  The main RX and the
transmitter are still fine on 80, which might help track it down if I
knew what I was doing.  Any ideas?

[Elecraft] WSJT-X Interface with K-3 with IO3B USB interface

2024-01-03 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR

I just moved everything to a new Windows 10 computer, and seem to have scrambled the USB
connection between the computer and my K3. The receive bargraph is pinned at 85 dB, but
the wide graph display shows only a relatively few, weak signals, and when I enable
transmit, WSJT-X throws an error message "Error in Sound Input." I suspect the
latter probably means that the settings for the USB port connecting to the K3 are messed
up, but don't know how to correct this. Can anyone help?

Sorry, Adrian - I hear you but I am not willing to accept that location
trumps everything.  Sure it costs money to train new techs, and I'm sure

I can understand your frustrations. However I think your sentiment that “the

As background, I lived in Monterey, just down the road from Watsonville, for
three years (2013-2016) and I know the area well. Watsonville has a population
of about 50,000 and the primary industry (about 80% of the business in the
area) is agriculture. People won’t move to small/medium sized agricultural
communities because there isn’t a lot there for them, so importing skilled
staff isn’t feasible. Domestically there aren’t skilled persons around who
could be hired to work on the radios because again it’s primarily an
agricultural community.

The company itself isn’t large, I understand, and they’re going as fast as they
can all the time. With the current global labor shortage it’s close to
impossible to hire people in ANY industry, and electronics fabrication and
repair is no exception.

So basically what you’re saying is the company should buck the global trend and
import or train staff who are willing to move to a small agricultural community
in north central California to work on skilled electronics repair. It just
won’t happen. There IS no way to “address the situation”. This is the global
reality in a post COVID world and it behooves us to be patient since it can’t
be changed.

And FYI, uplifting an entire company and moving elsewhere is simply
impractical. And it still won’t address the labor shortage.

They clearly aren't interested in setting up a third party repair
center.

Given the cost of setting up and running a second "factory
warranty/repair center" it just doesn't make sense. Notice
that none of the other radio manufacturers offer duplicate
facilities on the east/west coast ... even those that did so
at one time have pulled back.

The cost of facilities, duplicate test equipment, duplicate
spare/repair parts, etc. simply can not be amortized economically
across one or two technicians. It's far more efficient to simply
add another technician or two (*IF* one can find a qualified tech)

[Elecraft] In-shack RFI Precautions was: Re: Elecraft Digest, Vol 236, Issue 2

2023-12-03 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
For whatever it is worth, I use 1" copper tubing, running down the back
of my desktop, then connecting by about 8 feet of #8 copper to an 8-foot
ground stake.  Everything in my shack handling significant power or RF
is bonded to the tubing.  My house system ground is on the diametrically
opposite side of the house, over 100 feet, so I have settled for what I
have, plus *lot* of ferrite on various leads in my shack.  It's quite
quiet unless my local power company contributes with badly maintained
power lines, in which case I harass my power company's RFI guy

Yes, but that's a VERY oversimplistic description. Study N0AX's ARRL

The VERY short answer is that everything that's connected to the rig
must be bonded together by short fat copper AT the operating desk.
That common point must be bonded to every other ground in our home,
also by the shortest practical fat copper. In the shack, I mostly use
#10 stranded; outside, I use #6 stranded.

my K-3's receivers.  Will these filters fit in the K4D?  If not, who
currently sells such filters for the K4D?

My 2400-serial number K3 has begun to have a sporadic receive problem,
which has gotten much worse recently.  It's really weird.

What happens is this - the receiver sporadically loses most of its audio
output level, until I move the AF pot a couple of degrees either way, at
which point it immediately restores the audio.  Often, but not always,
this occurs right after a transmission (on CW), so I was initially
suspecting a failing relay, but the way it responds to a minute change
in the AF level setting makes me think something subtler. Any ideas?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA-1500 on 160

2023-11-18 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Bingo.  Into my Cantenna no problem all the way up to 1500W.  I also
noticed during the antenna tests that my amp heated up very rapidly to
levels not seen before (over 70C).  I had expected lower efficiency on
160, so I'll need to watch it.  I was temporarily driving my Carolina
Windom, and of course it's not intended for use on 160.  My 160M
inverted-L, with a nice low SWR,  is not yet hooked up, pending the last

I have a KPA-1500, and followed the manual's instruction to run an Aux
cable between my K-3's ACC jack (on the KIO3B) and the KPA-1500.  I
prefer to have the band changing already accomplished before I go key
down, even for just a dit.

By default, the KPA500, KPA1500, and KAT500 all have
near-instantaneous frequency-detection. They switch very quickly to
the right band, and the tuners will recall previous antenna tunings
for the detected frequency. All it takes is a dit or a tap on the mic.
That's in addition to the front panel band switches. I own all three,
and have never used an AUX cable with any of them.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 low temperature VFO tuning oddity - clicking relay

2023-11-12 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
I'll be interested to hear what you learn, Mike.  I don't have an ATU in
my K-3, but I feed a KPA-1500, and when I QSY quickly (for example when
pouncing on spots), I hear relays click in the amp's ATU.  I assume this
is a function of QSYing from one ATU zone to another, every 10 or 20 KHZ
(except on 10M, where it's 100).  It does this whether I'm transmitting
or not.

I wonder if the firmware update you installed added this behavior to
your K-3. I can see where it might be a good thing to adjust the ATU
before you transmit, even if just a few milliseconds before.

73, Pete N4ZR

On 11/12/2023 2:59 PM, Michael Carter via Elecraft wrote:

I've been getting reacquainted with my K3 (S/N 67XX)
since adding the 100 watt PA module (KPA3A) last
weekend. I also updated the firmware to the latest
versions and ran the TX Gain Calibration successfully
at all three power levels. The K3/10 had been sitting
disconnected from everything since maybe 2019 when
I used it to test the XV432 transverter I built.

In operating in the early mornings this past week
I observed an odd clicking of a relay as I tuned
VFO A. Additional experimentation revealed that
VFO B would also produce the sporadic relay
clicking while tuning that control. There was no
apparent pattern to the clicking, i.e. no regular
frequency interval at which clicks occurred.

In both instances the relay clicking disappeared after
a brief warm-up period. I confirmed this behavior
again by leaving the shack heat off and the rig off
for a couple hours. The Front Panel temperature and
PA Temperature both registered 12C on a cold start
(yes, it is New Hampshire on a fall day), and the
anomalous relay clicking on tuning either VFO A
or VFO B ceased once the Front Panel temperature
rose above 17C. This behavior was never observed
in many years of operating the K3/10 in contests
and general DXing, and the shack was plenty cold
through those fall and winter mornings until the
heat kicked up.

I'll open the top cover and determine which relay
is being activated during the cold start-up. Both VFO
encoders go directly to the Front Panel MCU
with no intervening circuitry save for connectors
and printed wiring.

At first I thought the relay clicking might be from
the internal KAT3 ATU, but this behavior occurs in
RX mode with no effort to transmit or activate
ATU TUNE. It occurs with the ATU bypassed as
well as in-circuit. I'm now wondering if the
MCU developed a low temperature sensitivity
during its long hiatus from daily use?

Has anyone seen this kind of low temperature
relay clicking when tuning the receiver right after
a cold start?

Thanks in advance, and 73,
Mike, K8CN

[Elecraft] Duty Cycle of FT8 #Elecraft

2023-11-10 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
I started operating FT8 while my KPA-1500amp was out for repair.  Now
it's back and raising a question:

Operating with just my K-3, set at 100 watts, I would see 100 watts
indicated on its meter through the whole 15-second FT8 transmission..
When I drive my amp, it only needs 30 watts for full CW power (on 24
MHz),  but the amp indicates 1200 watts input for the whole FT8 transmit
cycle.  I'm wondering if I should back off to protect the
amp, considering the duty cycle is so high - on the other hand, the
temperature reading profile of the amp seems to be pretty much the same
as on CW.

Re: [Elecraft] HI CUR warning on K3

2023-11-08 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Hi John - I've fairly well established that the problem is not at the
antenna, but arising somewhere in the grounding/RFI protection in my
station, since it occurs only on one band and (more importantly) because
it stopped totally after I re-tightened all the connections in my
grounding system yesterday .

The Carolina Windom incorporates a line isolator 22 feet down from the
feedpoint, but technical questions have been raised about exactly what
you describe, and I'm not technical enough either to question the
analysis or to experimentally measure the common mode current on the
feedline.  Further complicating the issue, the feedline to my CW is very
long - on the order of 250 feet, a mix of RG8-X and Buryflex.  This
arose because I put the antenna switch at the base of my tower, and the
feedpoint of the CW is at one extreme of what amounts to a triangle with
the antenna switch and the shack.

into my dummy load, nor does it happen on the same antenna on 80M, or on

I've read the HI CUR warning discussion on page 65 of the manual, but it
doesn't seem relevant, because I don't have external speakers. The fact
that it only happens when feeding an actual antenna on one band
suggests RFI, but the fact that the HI CUR warning and gain reduction
recur again and again long after any RF has me puzzled. Any suggestions

Re: [Elecraft] Yamaha CM500 Headset

2023-10-11 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
My older one could have the mic on either side, but the new one I just
got appears to have stops to prevent over-rotating the pivot on the
earphone and eventually breaking the mike cable (definitely a problem
with the older one, and you can guess how I know.)

[Elecraft] KI03B equipped K3 with N1MM and MMTTY

2023-09-22 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
For the first time in maybe 6 years I thought I'd spend a little time in
the CQWW RTTY  contest this weekend.  I selected the contest, and to my
surprise N1MM and MMTY came up and I was receiving RTTY.

Alas, when I tried to transmit in AFSK, it appears that no audio is
making it to the K-3.  I think that this is probably because since the
last time I did RTTY, I installed a KIO3B in my K-3,  I'm guessing that
MM wants to see the AFSK audio passed through the KIO3B's sound card,
but I don't know what has to be done to get this to happen.  Anyone out
there with advice?  I have gone into the N1MM manual but failed to find
anything.

[Elecraft] HI RFI and HI CUR messages

2023-09-17 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Suddenly I've begun getting these messages after transmitting,
especial;ly on 10 MHz.  Only change in my station is that I added a
borrowed KAT-500 tuner to my K-3 while my KPA-1500 was back at
Watsonville.   I surmised that the problem might be due to defective
cables, so I've been changing then out one by one, but no joy.  The
manual isn't much help - any other suggestions?

Well, half fixed. Discovered that I had routed my recorded audio in

Before I do anything else I'm going to check for a physical connection

Re: [Elecraft] K4 and Yamaha CM-500 Mic?

My CM-500 is about 4 years old, and shedding ear-pads, but it works fine

level - I could talk at normal loudness to get 5 on the ALC.

I also use the CM-500 on my laptop to record a radio show.  I had to
turn up the gain close to max on the computer as well.  I think
late-production CM-500s just tend to have low microphone sensitivity.

like it had in the K3.

I attempted to get 3-5 bars of ALC by turning up the mic gain
control.  Even

with the gain up to 80, I’d have to speak *very* loudly to just get a
flicker on the ALC meter.

I then went back into the mic configuration and turned on the preamp
(14dB).
After that I could get  some ALC bars with the mic gain around 65 or
more.  But
I still  had to talk much louder than I had to with the same mic on
the K3.

(note:  mic level on the K3 was set around 7).

Question:  Is it reasonable to expect that I’d have to have the mic
gain at

such a high level - and still have to talk louder than my normal (K3)
level?

BTW, I can hook up the MH-4, switch to front mic, and all works
smooth with

mic gain around 12.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Power-hunting on FT8

2023-07-20 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
OK guys - rather than reply individually, let me try to pull everything
together in one message.

In a previous effort at FT8 I followed the standard advice to set the
power slider in WSJT-X (on the lower RIGHT side) so that my K-3 showed 4
bars on the ALC meter, just below the threshold for ALC starting, and
that seemed to work fine.  Then a technically-qualified local ham showed
me spectrum analyzer images of a K-3 at 4 bars versus at no bars, and
the difference was startling - the no bars signal was clean and narrow,
while the 4-bars signal looked like some of those SSB sigs we hear
during contests, wide and with many artifacts.  I am not going to
identify my source here, but I'm fairly sure he reads this reflector, so
maybe he'll join the discussion

Anyway, I'm kind of at sea - WSJT-X works fine with no bars - I've
finished 12 and 17M, as well as digital DXCC in the last few weeks,
following his advice.  But the hunting typically takes almost 20 seconds
of transmitting - roughly 1 1/2 FT-8 cycles - to reach full power - and
happens every time I change bands, which puts me behind the curve if I
switch bands, see someone I need, and have to spend 1 1/2 transmit
cycles getting up to full power before I can call him effectively.

[Elecraft] K3 Power-hunting on FT8

2023-07-20 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
I've recently started operating FT8, and on advice from other K3 users,
have been adjusting the power slider in WSJT-X to a level just short of
or just into the first flickers of ALC.  I did this because I was
advised that setting the slider for 4 or 5 bars of ALC generated junk in
the FT8 passband.  I am running the K3 in Data A mode

Since I did this, I've noticed strange (to me, anyway) behavior from my
K3.  When WSJT-X starts an FT8 transmit cycle, after I have just
switched to the current band or changed the power slider in WSJT-X or
the PWR control on my K-3, the K3's power output starts essentially at
zero and slowly ramps up through 1- 1 1/2 FT8 transmit cycles.  Once it
reaches the expected level, subsequent transmissions stay at that level.

I've been told (not by Elecraft) that this behavior is a result of the
K3's firmware "hunting" for the right power level, but such a slow and
repetitious behavior doesn't fit with the rest of what I've come to
expect from my K3.  It doesn't happen on CW or SSB either. So what's
going on?

[Elecraft] Odd K-3 Symptom

During the WPX CW contest, I was having some trouble with RF getting

[Elecraft] Serial port woes with KIO3B

2023-05-02 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Yesterday, I installed a KIO3B update kit in my K-3.  Everything appears
to work OK except for the USB serial port.  At first, this morning,
everything seemed to be working OK - the K3 was controlling my amp and
reading out frequency to DXLab Commander.  I started trying to configure
N1MM to read radio frequency, and things went steadily downhill from
there.  At this point, I have no frequency readout on either program,
and cannot send F-key messages from N1MM.  I have tried every available
COM port under Windows 10, and checked for hidden ports (none).  I have
restarted the computer several times with no change.

Can anyone suggest something to try, or a test that might reveal what's
going on?

2023-03-14 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
So, after many hours of fiddling around, I had to give up on the KIO3B
for the time being.  I made repeated efforts, being exquisitely careful
to make sure all the board-edge connectors were properly meshed, and
every time I came up with ERRIO3.  So at that point I pulled the KIO3B
parts, replaced them with the original KIO3A parts, and the radio
started up without any errors. I think I may have gotten a
dead-on-arrival KIO3BUPKT, and have written to Elecraft. Transmit side
seems to be fine - tested on a number of bands - as does the interface
with my KPA1500.

One remaining crazy problem - the receivers, both the main and the
sub-RX, are VERY dead.  Band noise doesn't move the S-meter on any band,
and *almost* nothing can be heard.  It sounds to me as if what I'm
hearing on either RX is probably the result of incidental coupling, and
that it's likely that some shared RX signal connections is open.  Can
anyone who is intimately familiar with the K-3 suggest which ones I
might scrutinize?  I have the schematics but have not been able to
relate them to the physical reality.

Thanks in advance

[Elecraft] Help - K-3 TMP cables

2023-03-11 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
I'm in a bit of a mess.  I took my K-3 (S/N 4275) with the sub-RX apart
in order to replace Q3, the MOSFET that switches the Key Out jack, which
is buried under the sub-RX and the I/O subassemblies.  In the process, I
managed to pop loose the cable that goes from VCO Out (J84 of the *main*
synthesizer board), connecting  presumably to somewhere on the big main
RX board.  But I can't, for the life of me, find an empty TMP jack
anywhere on the RF board. Judging by the length and curvature of the
orphan cable, it should go somewhere on the left side of the main board,
toward the left \, but there's nothing there.

The problem is that the updated KSYN3A synthesizers in my K3 were
installed at the factory, so I don't have the usual documentation and
the units look very different from the originals  (my assembly manual
only covers the original synthesizers, and also looks much different in
the section dealing with the cabling of the synthesizers)

Can anyone tell me where that cable is supposed to go?

Some good news now as we are beginning to ship K3 & K3S Option orders! I
apologize for the dearth of updates over the weeks since our last update -
We've had our heads down solving production issues and unexpected parts
shortages with the K3 & K3S options and our main products while managing
our regular product production flow.

On top of that, the large number of last time buy K3 & K3S option orders
now shipping is putting a heavy load on our sales department as we confirm
order info and work through the shipping process, which is on top of their
daily work managing all our our regular K4, KX products and Amplifier order
& shipping flow. (Madelyn and Michelle are amazing..)

*KIO3B & KSYN3A* - Now Shipping (finally!):
We received *100%* of both items late last week from our Calif. PCB
assembly subcontractor and we are testing, packaging and shipping them now.
This quantity will cover *all* of our deposit orders and most of our wait
list orders.

Please be patient with us as both the KIO3B and KSYN3A were extremely
popular and had a very large order response - they are at the very top of
our order list in quantity. Due to the large quantity of individual orders,
it shouldn't be a surprise that we will not ship all the orders instantly.
It will require a number of weeks as we step through the process of
contacting everyone to confirm shipping info, collect their shipping costs
(and additional funds for 1/2 deposit orders) and to ship their orders. You
will know you are getting close to shipping when we contact you to confirm
everything.

Once we finish the prepaid deposit orders, we'll be contacting our waitlist
orders and going through the same process to confirm shipping info, collect
funds etc. We will post here and via our newsletter much more often as we
work through the pile of orders. (% of deposit orders, and then the same
for waitlist orders. )

*The above process will repeat as we work throughout our other option
orders.*

*K144XV and K144RFLK:*
We have shipped 100% of our deposit orders for the K144XV and K144RFLK
options along with the majority of the waitlist orders who responded to our
emails. We have a few of these left. If you are on the waitlist for these
items and have not heard from us, please check your spam folder or contact
sa...@elecraft.com

*P3TXMON: *
We are contacting customers and shipping the first batch of these now. We
also expect a second assembled circuit board delivery in 3-4 weeks that
will cover the remaining order backlog.

*KAT3A:*
We have started shipping KAT3As and expect a second batch later this month
to complete shipping the backlog.

*KBPF3A:*
In process and should arrive here and start shipping by the end of this
month.

*KXV3B: *
In process and should arrive here and start shipping by the end of this
month.

*K3EXREF:* In process. We have the raw circuit boards in house and are
sourcing a few remaining parts for this board. If all goes well, these will
ship near the end of this month.

*KDVR3:* In process. Currently sourcing the DVR flash memory.

*KPA3A:* In process. One delay is a sheet metal order delivery for the rear
fan panels used with this option. We are expediting this.

More updates soon (definitely sooner than this update) as we get closer to
the assembled circuit board and sheet metal delivery dates and get more
info on these and the other options.

Re: [Elecraft] K3: Headphone Jack hardware?

Hi Martin - My K3 is on its second headphone jack, due to symptoms like
yours.  Recently it started doing this again, but I was inside the radio
for another issue and reseated some boards (including KIO3 if I remember
correctly) and it stopped happening.  You might look into that before
you replace hardware.

There is no part number for the headphone jack in the assembly manual.
IIRC the front pcb came with the jack already installed.

Any hint how to try a repair prior to fire up the soldering iron is

What to do if a repair fails?

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 opinions

2023-02-09 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
There is an excellent kpa1...@ghroups.io reflector where there has been
a lot of discussion about maintenance history.  See particularly a post
by W3IP on replacing the final transistors - there have been a fair
number of such failures.  I'm glad that Jim had a good experience - my
fairly early KPA-1500 is at Watsonville now after I started experiencing
RX insensitivity when in Standby or when my radio switched it back to
receive.  I suspect a relay issue, but am looking forward to seeing the
repair report, and trust that Elecraft will have made any mods needed
while the amp was there.

I'm a near neighbor of Elecraft and people who work there. The KPA1600
never went into production. My KPA1500 arrived 6/29/19, and has never
given me the slightest trouble. It sees heavy use in HF CW, RTTY, and
some SSB contesting, always legal limit. It also sees heavy use during
6M E-skip season on WSJT modes, where I run it at about 1,200W. It's a
very nice amp, and has replaced one the 87As in my SO2R station.

My KPA500 made two expensive trips to the factory. The KPA500 mostly
got used on 6M in the same way as the KPA1500, at 600W, and a lot in
W6GJB's contesting trailer for HF county expeditions (CQP and 7QP). I
still own it for those reasons. Several contesting friends also own
them. I don't have a record of when I bought it.

As we all have seen on the news and felt personally, inflation pressures
have pushed up prices for everyone over the past year. In our case the

I apologize for the delay getting this info out to everyone. (See my final

First - The current K3 & K3S option status. The following boards are now in
process, and should ship close to these dates ranges if there are no new
parts issues or surprise manufacturing delays.

P3TXMON 6-8 weeks
K3EXREF 8 weeks
KAT3A: 8 weeks
KDVR3 8 weeks
KPA3A6-8 weeks
KIO3B8-9 weeks
KSYN3A8 weeks
KBPF3A8 weeks
KXV3B 6-8 weeks

K144XV and K144RFLK 7-10 days
We've completed building an additional batch of K144XV 2M options and
we're finishing up the matching K144RFLK lock boards, which lock the
K144XV's frequency to the K3's reference oscillator.
We'll be contacting the remaining customers for these two items in order to
confirm shipping information (and collect the other half of the funds due
for shipping and those who made a half deposit.)

---

Remaining 3 Last time Buy items:

P3: Still seeing long parts delays from Analog devices and Microchip.

P3SVGA: Still seeing long parts delays from Intel (FPGA) and Microchip (uC).

K3/0 Mini: Microchip (uC) delays plus qualifying second sources on several
other parts. We are also evaluating our demo stock of K3/0 Minis to see if
that can help with regular orders or our wait-list orders.

We will update everyone on these last three items as we get new information.

General comments:
We've been navigating a wide range of parts and manufacturing issues these
past months. The K3 Options suffered in focus as we first had to keep our
primary product lines rolling out the door to you. (K4s, KX-Line, Amps
(100, 500 and 1500W) etc.) We've been successful sourcing parts for these
primary products and keeping them shipping :-) , but its taken way more
focus and effort that anyone expected..

We've also had to contend with one of our key circuit board assembly
subcontractors becoming unavailable after being sold to another company.
(All of our boards are built in the U.S.) That resulted in our other
assembly subcontractors becoming overloaded. Fortunately we have now
qualified and brought on-line several new U.S. circuit board assembly
companies with excellent results. In addition to smoothing our regular
production, this has made it possible to get our focus back on the K3
Options.

We will be posting updates for these products as they each get closer to
shipping.

Thank you again for your patience.

Re: [Elecraft] Running high power

2022-11-22 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Al, you really should take this question to the r...@contesting.com
reflector - there is a huge amount of experience--based information
there from a number of RFI mavens. One of the most energetic and
prolific is K9YC, who has written a number of very detailed papers on
various aspects of RFI that are available on the web.  Google will find
them for you - a good place to start is
http://www.audiosystemsgroup.com/RFI-Ham.pdf

In answer to your question, most everyone has these issues to a larger
or smaller degree. It probably makes best sense to start by making sure
your station itself has proper bonding, grounding, and filtering as
required.  Then go on and look at each of the devices being interfered
with, and apply similar methods.

Thanks, Kent - that's what I thought, but it doesn't seem to be working.  I
generally use the internal tuner, and I was hopping around a lot within bands,
but unfortunately I didn't collect data on which hops produced warnings -
either excessive current warnings or over-power readings on the LED scale.

keep a couple spares as the foam covers do wear out.

If you need to block of lot of shack noise, there are other options, most

[Elecraft] K3 PTT vs QSK

2022-09-24 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
I'm working with a piece of accessory equipment that relies on the "Key
Out" (PTT) signal to switch my transmitting antenna from my K3/KPA-1500
to an SDR.  Am I right to assume, as appears to be the case, that when
the K3 is in VOX/QSK mode, the Key Out jack continues to behave as if it
was in PTT mode - that is, switching on before first RF and switching
off after the PTT delay has passed.  I may have missed it, but can't
find this in the K3 manual.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 ATU question

2022-09-13 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
IMO, the really critical thing to do is to follow the table in the
manual and "train" the ATU at the recommended intervals on each band.
Once you have done this it effectively becomes a 1500-watt transceiver
(unless, of course, you have more than two antennas per band).

Some of my HF antennas have good SWR at one end of the band but need more
ATU assistance at other frequencies. I don’t turn the ATU on and off, my
ATU relay settings are “bypassed” on some frequencies.

You can choose the “really good” SWR threshold, by band, in a menu or the
KPA1500 Utility. I think it defaults to 1.2 to 1.

Subject: [Elecraft] K3/K3S Options Last time buy update

Hi Everyone,

I apologize for not posting this update last week. It was quite busy
at Elecraft HQ, plus I had two unexpected visits to the dentist. (Lots of
fun :-)

As you know by now, the logistics and parts production shortage problems
caused by the COVID pandemic have caused huge production problems for us
and the rest of the electronics industry, car manufacturers etc. The delay
getting the K3/K3S Options status out has primarily been due to the fact
that our Elecraft production, purchasing and engineering teams, in addition
to their normal day to day tasks, they have also been heavily focused on
working together to find production quantities of parts (and alternate
parts) for our primary product lines (K4, K4D, KX2, KX3, KPA500, KPA1500,
KXPA100 etc.) This is a herculean task, with new shortages popping up
every week. Even 'confirmed' scheduled parts ordered 12 months in advance
from major distributors can suddenly not show up on time. So far we have
been successful dodging these issues, finding alternate suppliers, locating
alternate parts, buying larger quantities of hard-to-get parts for
inventory etc. This has kept our primary products moving out the door in
steadily increasing quantities each month, (Feb. and March were record
months) but it also has slowed us from working on finding and purchasing
all the parts for the last run of K3/K3S options. That said, we are now
focusing more directly on this and have been successful getting many of the
critical K3/K3S option parts in house. Below is our current Status.

I've initially broken the options into 5 groups with estimated shipping
dates, depending on which options we are currently focused on, parts we
already have in stock, expected parts delivery times, certainty of
acquiring parts, manufacturing time and how close we are to having all
parts for each option in house. Dates will get firmer in general as we
move forward.

We will contact customers with currently booked orders (and wait list
customers in some cases) as each option gets close to shipping. (Please
try to resist calling sales for new updates as they are heavily loaded and
will not have new K3/K3sOption information until the next update comes out.)

Group 1:
a.) K144XV will be ready to ship within the next week. (We will start
contacting customers this week).
b.) K144RFLK: 6-8 weeks if everything goes ok. This board can be
installed after the K144XV is installed. (We're working to get this one
faster, if possible.)

Group 2: (These two options received the highest quantity of orders)
a.) KSYN3A: 7-12 weeks if there are no last minute surprises. We have been
successful locating and purchasing the primary problem parts, including the
SI570, Pic processor etc.

b.)KIO3BUPKIT: 8-12 weeks

Group 3:
KXV3B, KBPF3A, P3TX Monitor, KAT3A:, KPA3A, 10-14 weeks

Group 4:
K3/0-Mini, K3EXREF, KDVR3. 14-16 weeks est. This may change +/- depending
on parts deliveries and availability.

Group 5:
P3, P3SVGA: After Group 4. Working on locating several hard to get
parts. Will update with estimated ship dates in following status updates
as this becomes better defined.

I will work to post updates every 2-3 weeks as we move forward. As parts
come in we hope some items in groups 2-4 will move to shorter times.

Eric WA6HHQ

Re: [Elecraft] Any progress on K3 modules?

2022-08-18 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
That's fine, Wayne.  I understand the problem, but for a while it looked
like I might be in need of a KIO3 after a lightning hit.  Fortunately,
that was resolved, but given the known sensitivity of this board (which
would have been my third replacement) I was praying for a positive answer.

It turned out to be a Windows registry or Device Manager issue (whew)
which I was able to resolve (though I will never know exactly how hi).

Hi Pete,

I just rechecked status on these boards. It looks like the KSYN3 will be the

these modules (like everything from toasters to Teslas) are subject to supply
chain issues, and in most cases just one or two parts are holding things up.

As each board comes out of the queue we'll post updated status right away.

Has there been any progress on the planned final production run of the KIO3 Upgrade Kit?
I ordered one just before everything stopped in 2020, and put my name on the "last

[Elecraft] K3 serial port

2022-08-17 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
Thanks to everyone who offered educated thoughts on my problem.  I just
discovered that the problem apparently lay in my USB hub, perhaps as
simple as a loose connector.  I plugged the USB cable into a computer
port directly and voila!  So I now have frequency control communications
again.  All I'm lacking now is to clean up the Windows registry and,
hopefully, be offered a good port again for my CW/Other function, so
that I'll be able to send CW from the keyboard.

[Elecraft] Diagnosing Serial Port Issue

2022-08-16 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
My station took a lightning hit a couple of weeks ago, and I have just
finished configuring a new computer with my old C drive.  That all works
fine, but for some reason I'm not able to get COM port communication
between N1MM Logger and my K3.  I'm using a USB-to-serial cable.  When I
open the Config menu, I see COM 11 with an asterisk indicating that it
doesn't exist, and COM1 as another option. This seems odd because my
setup used COM3 for radio and COM6 for CW keying before the event.

I'm at a loss about how to diagnose the problem.  It could be the IO
board in the K3, I suppose (shudder) or the RS232 to USB adapter cable.
I can just buy another cable, to rule that out, but is there a way to
run a self-test on the K3 IO to see if it is damaged?

As an aside, I have had a KIO3B on order for +/- 2 years, but I don't
know when or if that's going to happen. The radio seems otherwise to be
fine; I've tested its sensitivity and power output on several bands. I
just want to try to dig myself out of this before CQWW and SS.

Re: [Elecraft] KPA1500 finals replaced...

2022-08-12 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
It would be useful to know more about the circumstances of these final
transistor failures.  I have been running my KPA-1500 for almost three
years, contesting, almost always at 1400+ watts, and, fingers crossed,
so far it continues to run with my K3 like a 1500-watt transceiver.  I
often (more frequently than I would like) trigger SWR faults due to
having the wrong antenna connected, but it always recovers easily.

The second was just before the two year mark (finals + LPF PCB assy).

In addition, the power supply failed once at about 1.5 years due to a
manufacturing defect.

A bit of my operation is NOT at the most efficient power levels (200-700 watts)
for the
KPA1500 and I have been reassured (a couple of times) by Elecraft that the
KPA1500 is
designed to operate at ANY power level and that is not the reason for the
failures. I would go
higher in power if a P5 and/or BS7 would ever appear.

I bought the KPA1500 knowing that I would not be operating at super high power.
 I wanted a
reliable amplifier and having units that I could lift as I have been licensed
for 58 years. My
previous amplifier was 58 pounds and the shipping cost (69 pounds) to replace a
blown T/R
switch was heart breaking!

Yes, it took a long time sitting on the Elecraft shelf waiting for repair (each
time), but all
repairs were done properly.

I do have a variety of antennas (12 coaxial inverted Ls in various phasing
configurations),
steppir beam, inverted Vee and keeping them all operating (get some high winds
here) is a
bit. Hopefully, the SWR faults should protect the amplifier if something
happens while
operating.

Re: [Elecraft] Systematic error in spots as heard by K3

2022-07-29 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
I agree, Rich - I had used the Elecraft calibration procedure with WWV
to make sure it's dead zero-beat, when I first noticed this phenomenon.
Done at 10 MHz before, this time at 15 MHz,  which seemed to be slightly
different, so now we'll see how the spots sound.  Could be all it was -
more precise calibration at the higher frequency.  I hope so.

Wish I didn't have such a tin ear hi.

I don't think so. Most modern CW rigs that I am aware of, including the K3,
display the actual transmitted frequency on the dial, not the SSB
suppressed carrier frequency.

That is why the spotted frequency should not depend on the choice of
sidetone if the rig is tuned to the signal correctly. If the displayed
frequency on the dial was the suppressed carrier frequency, then spotted
frequencies would depend on the sidetone, but that is fortunately not the
case with most modern radios. The microprocessor in the radio takes care of
the offset calculation.

If someone has a rig without adjustable sidetone and they prefer to listen
to a different tone than their rig's sidetone, they need to be aware that
when they listen this way they will be transmitting on a different
frequency than the signal they are receiving, and also that frequencies
they spot will be incorrect.

If spots seem to be consistently to one side or the other of your sidetone,
though, my first thought would be that there could be a frequency
calibration error in your rig. An easy way to check would be to tune to the
WWV carrier with the rig in CW mode. With the dial on exactly 10.000 MHz,
the carrier tone you hear in the receiver should be the same as your
sidetone. In SSB, on the other hand, the WWV carrier should not be audible
(it should be at 0 Hz) with the dial on exactly 10.000 MHz.

[Elecraft] Systematic error in spots as heard by K3

2022-07-28 Thread Pete Smith N4ZR
My K3 is set up to zero-beat at 520 Hz, and its calibration has been
checked against WWV and adjusted to with 2 Hz.  That said, I'm surprised
when operating assisted to note that most spotted stations, when clicked
on, sound significantly higher in pitch than my sidetone.  It seems
logical, given that the cluster network rounds up or down to the nearest
0.1 KHz, that spotted signals should be about evenly distributed  (half
higher than my sidetone, half lower).  But that's not the case.

Any suggestions?
