[Elecraft] KX1, ATU, and output power
Hi folks, Should the ATU affect output power from the KX1? If not, here's my conundrum: After finishing the 80-30 mod, the power output seemed a bit low. As per the instructions, I adjusted turn spacing on one of the two toroids on the new filter board and achieved 4 watts out on 80m and 30m, and 3 watts out on 40 and 20 at 14 vdc. I reinstalled the ATU, buttoned up the case. With the radio running into a 50-ohm dummy load, and with ATU engaged, I got about 1.5 watts on 80m, around 3 watts on 40m, 4 watts on 30m, and about 2.5 on 20m. These readings came from the internal watt meter, as well as an outboard NorCal wattmeter. I opened the case again, pulled the ATU, tweaked winding spacing, left the ATU out of the package, and the power levels returned to the original 4/3/4/3. I plugged the ATU back in and the same reduction in power out resulted. On inspecting the boards, it didn't look as though the ATU was physically impinging on the new filter board. And with the ATU attached, but with both boards out of the case, I was able to tweak windings to get the 4/3/4/3 output again...until the boards went back into the case. Then it was back to 1.5/3/4/2.5ish. What could be altering the output? The only thing I could think of was that the toroids might be wound a bit tight, so that when tweaking the spacing between windings, the windings basically slide back into more or less the original positions in about the time it takes to close the case. Yeah, it's a reach, but it's all I've got at the moment. Any thoughts/suggestions? I can try operating without the ATU and use my outboard tuner. But I figured as long as I've got the tuner, I'd like to use it. With best regards, Pete -- Peter N. [Elecraft] Reality check on final KXB3080 current test
Hi folks, I'm ba-a-ck. Before I button up the case, I wanted to check in for a final reality check on current readings after installing the 3080 filter board, to wit: 80m - 60 ma 40m - 40 ma 30m - 40 ma 20m - 38 ma The first three all seem to be in the ballpark, given our previous discussion. Twenty meters looks a bit lower, but still in the ballpark? The good news: Nothing exceeds the maximum in the instructions! Thanks in advance for a final bit of hand-holding! [Elecraft] OK, KX1 nervous Nellie question testing the 80-30 board
Hi Folks, I've just installed the 80-30 board (filter left to go), and in making the final current and voltage checks, I was unsure if one reading was too high. If the current draw after the LED times out is between 34 and 37 ma, good. If it's much higher than that, it could indicate a short. How much higher? I got a reading of about 38.9 ma. The various voltage checks all were fine, between 4.8 and 5 vdc. So I presume those are OK. It's the current measurement that I'm a bit concerned about. Any thoughts, other than I need to chill? ;-) With best regards, Pete -- Peter N. [Elecraft] Odd question regarding the K1
I'm contemplating a K1 as my next QRP project. In thinking about the band combinations, if one goes for the full six bands on two boards, I wonder if it's possible to set the four-band board up for 80-40-20-15, rather than 40-30-20-15/17. This assumes one buys all the boards at the same time and has all the parts on hand. For casual contest purposes, that would yield four bands instead of three without having to open the case to swap boards. Can 80-meter parts live on the four-band board? Or are they restricted to the two-band board? Yeah, I know...too much time on my hands! ;-) With best regards, Pete -- Peter N. And while a single-lever paddle may not provide the full feel of a bug (although spacing on the finger pieces aside, one can in fact adjust the gaps on a single-lever to come close), it's the habit of sending individual dahs and "automatic" dits that gets preserved. [Elecraft] Question on the BL2 with the KX-1
Hi Folks, Odd question as I get ready to take my KX-1 into the field: Can the BL2 in effect replace the BNC-to-binding-post connectors for a random-wire antenna? As I looked at the BL2's circuit diagram, it appeared as though hooking the antenna to the A screw terminal, any radials to GND, and setting the switch to 1:1 might do the trick. But I wonder what the inductance present in that side's transformer windings might do to wreck this idea. Is this out to lunch, or can I leave the binding posts behind and take the balun assembly for more versatility in antenna choices? I'm also thinking of whipping up a version of the Norcal doublet. [Elecraft] I need some grounding-strap guidance, if'n you please
Good morning, folks, I'm eagerly awaiting Wednesday's arrival of my KX-1 kit, tricked out for four bands plus the auto tuner. The last two kits I built (back in the day) were Heathkit's HW-8 and 2036A synthesized 2-meter transceiver. That was largely before static-sensitive ICs. I will be building the kit in my workshop, which occupies one corner of our garage (unfinished interior walls, unpainted cement floor). I'm not clear where I should hook up the other end of a wrist strap or mat. One thought that occurred to me involved any bolts holding down the wall framing to the cement foundation.
