[Elecraft] KPA500 single input and output
I suspect that many of us have separate antennas for different bands, most likely for HF and 6m. The two antenna inputs on the K3 work very well for that purpose and switch automatically when I switch bands. That is why I am curious why the KPA500 does not at least have two switched outputs with band memory like the K3. This is one feature I am going to loose when I start to use the KPA500, which I have ordered. It does make sense to leave it out. I tried looking at the schematic to see if the KXV3A had the RXA mod but I could not find the appropriate schematic. Re: [Elecraft] K3 with 1000 Hz filter
I am using the 1Khz filter. It is my most used filter for CW, my primary mode of operation on HF. My whole filter complement is 2.8KHz, 1Khz, 400Hz and 250Hz. So for all width settings between 1Khz and 400Hz, I use this filter. Regarding efficacy, I only recently got the 1KHz filter. Before getting this filter, I would be using the 2.8Khz filter when I set the width to 500Hz. There was a larger difference in noise level between 400 and 500Hz, more that just the change in bandwidth would indicate. I attributed this to having a wide roofing filter. Now that is much less the case. This is purely subjective, with no electrical measurements. YMMV. Turn the rig on and wait at least 15 minutes for he reference oscillator to stabilize. Waiting is important. My reference oscillator moved by 19KHz in the first 15 minutes. Greg, You are right about the bold faced caution on Page 47 and indeed I waited long before doing the REF CAL, which I did using Method 2 with the cover closed. However, I am still surprised by the frequency excursion measured on start up. I did wait a lot longer and calibrated it using method 2, zero beating it with WWV. This was at ref cal value of 49,379,611, which is a lot closer to the frequency noted on the sheet that came with the TCXO - 49,379,964. With the ref cal set, I have re done VCO CAL and other calibrations. For now all seems to be as it should be. I have my fingers crossed. Thanks for your help, Raj Greg wrote: Raj, You have to read the manual when doing thisPlease note this BOLD FACED caution on page 47. Re: [Elecraft] K3
A significant portion of the functionality of K3 is software defined. Elecraft has already indicated this will be 'one-click' updateable using WinXP. These kinds of modern radios can really be modified significantly by software alone. Consider the improvements in Ten-Tec's Orion and Flex-Radio's SDR-100o over their 2/3 three year lifespan. Both of them are significantly better than when they were introduced. Now throw in the super customer responsive culture of Elecraft and we can safely predict that the K3 will be steadily and significantly upgraded on a continual basis. Re: [Elecraft] Yaesu FT-2000 v K-3?
There is a basic difference in the choice of IF frequencies. The Y2K main receiver has first IF at 69.45MHz, second at 450khz, and last at 30Khz for the DSP. The Elecraft has the first IF at 8.215Mhz and the second at 15Khz for DSP. This choice reveals a lot. There are many more choices (bandwidth, skirt, etc) for crystal filters at reasonable cost for a MF frequency such as 8.215 than for a VHF frequency of 69.45Mhz. Not surprising that Y offers only 15, 6, and 3Khz bandwidth filters for the first filter (roofing filter) at 69.45Mhz. Elecraft already has many more choices and still more to come. My guess is that with so many options available for the first filter in the rig, Elecraft will handily beat the Y2K in most receiver measurement numbers. Re: [Elecraft] KAT100: Strange K2/100 Behavior During Tune
Here is another simple explanation. Perhaps it is voltage drop on your power supply. You probably have the best match and most power output on the 40m band, Is your power supply up to it? A simple way to test this is to turn the power out down by 30W or so. Not enough db wise to make a difference if it is an rf interefence issue but will considerably reduce the demand on your power supply. I also noticed that other accessories on the same power supply re-set themselves when it happens, supporting the foldback limiting theory and the work-around that Tom posted and Mark pointed out. An easy way to check it is to cut a quarterwave wire for each band that is troublesome - attach one end of the wires to the ground terminal on your tuner and the other end just stretches out and attaches to nothing excpet an insulator. There will be high RF Voltage on the open end of the wires, so keep them clear of human and pet contact and keep them far enough away from objects to prevent arc-overs (treat the far ends sort-of-like the end af an antenna). If these wires correct the problem, then you do have work to do on the antenna system. If they do not help, then you can look further for a K2/100 or KAT100 problem. From your description, I would think something is causing a very high current draw (even for a very short time) - your power supply may be going into foldback limiting and the K2 powers off momentarily. The other possibility is that the resettable fuse in th ebase K2 is tripping and causing the power off condition (yes - it is powering off since you see the ELECrAFt on the display). Is this by any chance happening most frequently on 40 meters? 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- I have a K2/100 with a KAT100. For the most part, all works well as expected. Intermittently, though, when I press the TUNE button, the KAT100 will chatter briefly as if finding a match, and then it suddenly stops and the K2 acts as if its CPU has been re-set; the bargraph and the LCD go blank briefly, then the ELECrAFt sign-on message appears briefly and finally the frequency is re-displayed. During this time, however, the power supply indications are normal and the LCD backlight remains on. This problem seems to be frequency-dependent and seems to happen more often at high power, which leads me to think it is an RF feedback issue. However, I've noticed that turning the power down to bottom end of the high-power range (approx 12 W) usually doesn't help, yet turning it slightly lower than that, to get into the low-power range (approx 10 W), does. One of the characteristics I look for is response time / refresh time / time to read. It is much easier to make adjustments that depend on measured voltage or resistance if the meter quicks refreshes the readings. [Elecraft] QSK revisited
After my last email on comparing QSK implementations in the K2 and the Yaesu FT-1000MP and the comments from knowledgeable people on this forum, I decided to measure carefully and to make more careful notes on what I heard. I setup a K2 and an MP to transmit at the same frequency into dummy loads. To test the K2, I transmitted continuously on the MP at a level where the K2 showed a steady S9 signal. While this was being received by the K2, I set up my keyer to transmit the letter v at different speeds on the K2. I listened to the K2 and analyzed the sound using Spectrogram. I then did the whole thing with the MP as the device under test. The details of the test, the results, and images of the Spectrogram screenshots can be found at http://rajiv.dewan.info/qsk/ My subjective opinion is that the K2 is great if all one is interested in is inter-character or inter-word reception. In fact, the hang time is so well calibrated that it is very silent and easy on the ears. This is especially important for long contests. Inter-element reception is very demanding. For this purpose, I prefer the Elecraft K2 while transmitting up to 20wpm. At 25wpm or greater, the K2 essentially does not receive between elements. At 30 wpm Yaesu still has a usable QSK implementation but the extra noise is tiring. I do not think I could stand the noise from 30wpm or faster for long during a long contest. Hang time can be increased (Menu item 7-4 increased from 5 to 7 or 10ms) to where the QSK would be essentially be useless between elements but would serve some purpose to detect signals between words. With the increased hang time, where inter-element QSK is essentially disabled, I prefer the K2 as the Yaesu remains noisier. I will have to try even larger hang times and compare the sound. [Elecraft] K2 Vs FT1000MP QSK
I will have to redo my tests. As I think about it, it may have been between letters that I was hearing rather than between elements. The thumping on the Yaesu with the delay setting of 0 certainly put me off the Yaesu as it got really tiring really fast. I will try to optimize the timing for the Yaes and use Spectrogram to hear instead of my ears and see what I come up with. Thanks for all the input. I have gone back and checked out the past discussion on improving K2 QSK by modifying R17. Neither the MP nor the K2 have fast QSK. Both can no longer hear between elements after about 22 wpm at best, though you can hear between leters. But you must set the MP QSK timing slower, which will not slow down the QSK, only disappear the audio clicks and thumps. How slow? Well... a dit or an element space at 60 wpm is 20 ms long. Certainly no need to set it any shorter than that! Experiment, but I know you will be surprised and pleased how nice the Mp sounds when set to 20 ms, and the reality of the QSK is that it will not be slowed by increasing the audio delay so that you don't hear the actual switching of stages. The received audio on the Yaesu was horrible compared to the K2. While the K2 was smooth, almost as if I did not have breakin turned on, the Yaesu audio was full of low frequency thumps and distortion so much so that it made it hard to copy well between morse elements. I was transmitting at around 35wpm. I was using cascaded 500Hz filters on the Yaesu and the K2 filter was at the 400Hz setting. I also have the INRAD roofing filter installed on the Yaesu. Yaesu: fully loaded with all crystal filers and the roofing filter K2: Stock with KDSP2 But, I guess that the people on this list already know this! I bought the K2 to use primarily as an IF rig for VHF and up. I was planning to use the Yaesu for all HF contesting. I am now changing my mind. I just ordered the KPA100/KAT100 combo. I mostly do LP, CW contesting. The K2 seems ideal. Raj, N2RD ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Antenna Nut: It can't be this hard
I had exactly the same problem. I tried for a long time and gave up. I got a nut from another BNC connector in the junk box and it went on right away. Something is not right with those nuts. A recommendation for all new builders: try it before you install the antenna jack. It is probably not a bad idea to try out all the nuts for connectors / jacks before installing them. [Elecraft] K2/XV with Writelog
I tried to use my K2/KIO2/XV combination with Writelog for last weekend's CQWW VHF competition and failed. I hooked up the K2 to a serial port and set it up on Writelog. While Writelog recognized the rig and could set the frequency, it went crazy while polling the rig for frequency. It would keep cycling through all the bands and show random frequency that seemed to change with each poll. (BTW, the combination worked just fine with N1MM logger.) Has any one else noticed this? [Elecraft] K2 with XV144: TX offset without RIT/XIT
Problem was: SSB transmit offset by 540Hz. In reply to Steve's question: No, I did not have the RIT or XIT engaged. Easy enough mistake to make despite the flashing indicator. :( Just to dot the i's and cross the t's, I recalled that I had not set not set BF2-4 in CAL-FIL for SSB when I installed the unit. I re-did the CAL FIL calibration yesterday after diagnosing the problem. I transmitted into a dummy load and listened on a nearby receiver and found that now I seem to be on frequency, at least on the HF bands. I dunno if this makes any sense. Perhaps I was on Fil2 with the factory BFO setting for the filter. In any case, listening on HF I now seem to be spot on. I noticed the problem yesterday while having a 2m qso using the XV144. [Elecraft] LO Power for XV transverters

Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)
Great suggestions Don. I will do as you suggest: read the options' literature and prepare myself for them while still preserving the incremental approach as far as possible. Headers and push on jumpers instead of wire jumpers are a sure bet. Thanks for the other suggestions. I am sure I will need the group's wisdom to tackle some problem before long. Thanks, Raj Don Wilhelm wrote: Raj, Since you appear to be relatively skilled based on your list of successful projects, you could decipher the installation instructions for each of the options and as a minimum, install the headers and use jumpers pushed into the header pins instead of soldering the jumpers onto the K2 boards. I do it that way most of the time during construction. The KNB2 requires changing resistors on the RF board, but the K2 will work just fine if you install the resistor and jumper as instructed in the KNB2 manual (just don't do IP3 measurements without the 6dB pad in the KNB2 installed). C167 can be inserted into the KSB2 header, and C6 can be inserted into the K60XV 3 pin header. I recommend that you not install D19 and D20 nor change C71 to the 120 pf value until after you have completed the K2 without the K60XV option - that will leave you with one capacitor (C71) to desolder. One caveat - if you do not understand completely what to do and how to do this, then build it step by step as instructed in the manual. There is not really a lot of desoldering to be done when installing these options. Your other possible path is to buy the 'Rework Eliminators' and follow their instructions. 73, Don W3FPR -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Rajiv Dewan, N2RD Sent: Monday, June 26, 2006 4:17 PM To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] (no subject) Just arrived: K2 #5613 with KSB2, K160RX, K60XV, KNB2, KIO2, and KDSP2 for use as IF rig for the four XVs (50, 144, 222, 432) that I have already built. Re: [Elecraft] (no subject)
Great note Mark. I am looking forward to the project. I will check out the rework eliminators. I think that an incremental approach is the best and will follow your advice about building the basic K2 and testing it first. The XVs are all Elecraft ones. I ordered the XV432 right after coming back from Dayton. They had them in Dayton but I saw no reason to contribute to the OH treasury. When I got that built, I decided to go the K2 route. I like the idea of automating the whole thing right from the K2 front panel and so I opted for and bullt the XV50 even though I have a very nice SSB tranverter for that band. So now I have a stack of 4 XVs, just waiting for the K2 to be ready! The KK7B binaural receiver is neat. I had built that a while ago but never really played with it much. Last year I built the IQ-PRO DDS symthesizer that puts out two RF signals in quadrature. Used that to feed the binaural receiver. I put that near my bed so that I listen to the HF bands as I fall asleep. The binaural receiver is neat. Definitely recommeded. Thanks again for your note, All the best, Raj, N2RD Mark Schreiner wrote: Hi Raj, Sounds like you have a fun project coming up. I built my K2 with all those options as well as the KAT2 about just over one year ago. We used it for Field Day both last year and this year and worked great, as well as some amazing DXing on the lowbands during last winter. As far as the options go I'm not sure if you also got the rework eliminators, which some folk have been using to more easily do the upgrades later (as well as unplugging the options without having to solder/resolder/unsolder a few caps and resistors). You might consider those. I recall that there was some disassembly of the main RF board to install the K160RX and/or K60XV, while all other options were fairly painless to install otherwise. I would recommend getting the basic K2 built and tested first before going forward too far with the other options. Test it out on the air to make sure things all seem okay before proceeding further. Then, install one option at a time and test it out again to make sure that both the rig and the option works as it should. The testing period should slow down the building process because once they are all built that is it until you build something else, so enjoy it while you can! I loved building mine, along with all the options, but now that it is done (and I'm out of dollars for a while) all I can do is operate, which is fine as well. Did you get the Elecraft XVs or do you have Down East Microwave or some other XVs? All of my DEM XVs have been in storage for over 5 to 6 years now since I moved but I'm starting to get the itch to pull them out to interface them with the K2 for a portable/rover VHF/UHF setup. I just built the 4-bay 432 MHz loop as shown in July QST and plan to build a 2-bay loop for 220 MHz and another for 2m, all with male threads on the top of the 5' section of 3/4 pipe and female threads on the bottom so that they can be screwed into each other depending on if I want to use all, one or only two select antennas (and to make them shorter for transporting). I still have to build the 4-way splitter/combiner yet for 432 as well. I know of another ham that uses the DEM XVTRs with a K2 and he said it has been working well for him. I hope to find out in time for the August UHF contest! Oh, I have questions for you also about the IQ-VFO and the Binaural Rx. I have the IQ-VFO built and working but still need to finish it off into a nice project box. I had planned to use it with an R2/T2 combination, but am also interested in trying it with a binaural Rx. How do you like the Binaural Rx? Re: [Elecraft] Re: SMD-based kits and retirement [not!]
I built a couple of Elecraft transverters which use a mix of SMD and conventional parts. They came with the SMD components soldered in. For higher frequencies, some parts like chip capacitors are in fact better because they has less stray/component inductance. Yes, SMD are daunting but they can be done at home. There are plenty of advantages: - newer ics, and other devices, better designs - much much smaller finished products, a real plus for portable QRP gear The other are ways of mitigating the problems with size: 1. Throw in a few extra capacitors/resistors. This will only increase the cost by a buck or two and take the anxiety away. 2. Solder in the really fine pitch parts. 3. Change/reeducate the homebrewers to install parts by variety/type/value rather than component number. I have built a number of SMD / part SMD based projects (dsp10, iq-vfo, AA908) and actually find installing some parts, like 1206 resistors easier and faster with SMD rather than the leaded parts. Kit parts inventory would be easier, opportunity for builder error would be greatly reduced, most importantly the kit could be completed much more quickly, etc. The builder would still get familiar with the circuit design and get to align the unit (i.e., all the higher-level skills part of the kit-building experience would still be present). The use on pre-mounted SMD components is the one outstanding design feature of MFJ's otherwise unremarkable Cub series of QRP rigs. It would be great to see something similar in an Elecraft rig, even before the scarcity of through-hole components forces it. I'd buy one, whether I needed it or not. 73, Mike / KK5F ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] Transverters
The transverters are excellent. Easy to build and awesome performance. I ordered my first Elecraft product, a XV144 - the 2m transverter, a week ago. Took just a few hours to assemble it, and it was easy to align and setup. I have done a fair bit of kit building and home brewing (DSP10, Tandem Match, KK7B R1 and R2, and others). This is smoothest kit yet. And in Elecraft tradition, the outcome is world class. Just see the review of the transverter in October's QST Product Review. It beats the Down East Transverter hands down and measures up to the gold standard - the SSB LT2S which cost $900 (and is not available any more.) The closest commercial competitor today is DB6NT's TR144H that costs a $1,000 Euro - about $1,200 and its still incomplete (needs special options/parts to work with low power transverter outputs like that from Yaesu 1KMP, provide IF swithcing, etc). I am so impressed with Elecraft's transverter that just after building the XV144, I ordered the XV222. Can't wait for the XV432. If only I could rig up a pan adapter for the K2, I'd use that as an IF rig instead of the Kenwood 850. I guess I've joined the family of Elecraft fans. They are high performance - and they look so good with the K2. Thank you Paul K8QT #3479 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
