Re: [Elecraft] The use of a doublet
I use the K3 internal tuner then to a BL2. Most bands are good with the 1:1 ratio. That little switch is handy to go to 4:1 for some bands. I have a 85 m loop and have worked 160 to 6 meters with good results. On 160 I do have to tie the 450 Ohm line wires together and feed it against ground. A DPDT knife switch does that for me. 73, Ty, W1TF, K3 #696 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3 not transmitting anymore
I am using an Alinco DM-330M power supply. Across the output of the power supply I have a 26 AH battery. If the AC power quits I have many hours to shut down the K3. I have the output of the power supply set to 13.8 V. Should it be slightly higher? How much? Sometimes I do not even turn on the power supply when I get on the air. I keep looking for a power outage, less QRM, QRN. 73, Ty, W1TF (GA), K3 # 696 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] W2ENY HEADSET
I put in an order and the headset arrived two weeks ago. It has two 1/8" stereo plugs and both mike and headphones were plugged into the back of the K3. Now the AFX works! Reports of on air quality have been favorable. I have not done any TX EQ. The boom that holds the mike can be moved 180°, thus the boom may come from either ear. When I am on CW I just swing the boom up toward my ear, now it is no longer in front of my face. The cord goes to one earpiece, same one that holds the mike boom. There is a volume control on the cord. Helpful for adjusting volume. I am not using the adapters that came with the headset. They are used on the front panel. W2ENY does offer a PTT and foot switch. I made my own that plugs into the back of the K3. I am very satisfied with this purchase. 73, Ty, W1TF, GA, K3 # 696 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 ATU readout
Wayne gave us a way to read out what the ATU settings. Does anyone have the formula or formulae for using "CT or CA and the L and C values to determine the impedance presented to the ATU? Thanks, Ty, W1TF, K3 #696 -- Wayne wrote: Most of the time you'll let the KAT3 automatic antenna tuner do its thing and ignore it. It has a wide matching range and saves L-C information per-band and per-antenna, so you'll rarely need to re-tune. (We do plan to add multiple stored segments per band, too.) If you're ever curious about the actual L and C values used in the matching network, you can check them using a special setting of the KAT3 menu entry (in the CONFIG menu). Just set KAT3 to LCSET, then exit the menu. Next, tap "ATU TUNE". This will display the present L and C values. For example, I just matched my K3 on a random wire antenna on 40 meters, went into LCSET mode, and saw this when I tapped ATU TUNE: CA 0.08 nF L 0.25 uH The "CA" means that the capacitance ended up on the antenna side of the L-network. The other possibility is "CT", or capacitance on the transmitter side. The capacitance is shown in nF (nanofarads) so it can fit into three digits on the VFO A display even when the value is over 999 pF. The value shown, 0.08 nF, could also be expressed as 80 pF. Now, suppose you'd like to see what the effect of changing the L and C values would be on the match. (Or you're troubleshooting the KAT3.) You can simply rotate VFO A to change the C value, and rotate VFO B to change the L value. Tapping "ANT" alternates between "CA" and "Ct". Having made a change, tap ATU TUNE again to exit the L-C display. Then hold TUNE to go into transmit mode and see the new SWR value. Manual view/change of LC settings is certainly fun and educational. But it could also be used to give me (your overworked firmware guy) feedback about a difficult matching situation. I'm always open to fine-tuning the KAT3's algorithm. So if you discover -- using LCSET -- that you're able to do better than the KAT3 in auto-tune mode, just let me know. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

If it rains then I re tune again. Auto tune, select table, might even be better. 73, Ty, W1TF, K3 #696 --- On Wed, 2/11/09, Greg - AB7R wrote: > From: Greg - AB7R > Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KAT3 auto select by high SWR? > To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net, "Dan Atchison" > Date: Wednesday, February 11, 2009, 2:56 PM > This has been on the list for some time. [Elecraft] CW
In the last two months I have had many CW QSOs with Extra Class Amateurs where I have had to slow down, somtimes to 5 WPM. Listen from 7113 to 7120 kHz also 3550 to 3555 kHz. It has given me a thirll to work these new to CW hams. They remind me of how my CW must have sounded 60 years ago. There is no more code test, but the interest in CW seems to be increasing. Last month I joined SKCC and am using a straight key much of the time again. Feels good. Worked a few stations on 160 yesterday, that felt good also. I am not strickly CW, I also get into several voice nets each week. 73, Ty, W1TF, ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Elecraft QSO party
A few years ago in March there was an Elecraft QSO party. With my K1 I contacted many other Elecraft owners at that time. I also contacted N6KR and WA6HHQ at that time. I believe that the result was a boost to the K1's Mojo. I now have a K3 which is jealous of the Mojo that the K1 has and #696 is requesting a chance to QSO N6KR and WA6HHQ to obtain an improved Mojo status. It would be nice to have an Elecraft QSO party again. 73 Ty, W1TF, GA, K1 #1423, K3 #696. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Steve: I use Afreet Software, Inc. Software created by Alex Shovkoplyas, VE3NEA DX Atlas 2.25 http://www.dxatlas.com/ The less frequently heard DX callsigns are a problem for me also. Many times they are a special call sign for an event or DX expedition. There are lists out there that tell what prefixes belong to what country. Sometimes that does not work either. DX Atlas does a great job with maps, direction, distance, and gray line info. It gets frequent use here. The use of battery power HF rigs for wilderness travel is a good idea. I had a TenTec PM2 ?? it was a 40 and 20 M rig and had all sides. Maybe some one can identify the real model number. I first used this rig when I was OX5BT. (1970-1972) I was there for 2 1/2 years. Later back in the states I got into wilderness canoe camping in the late 1970's and 80's. I led several two week trips in ME and one in northern Ontario. Having that rig with me gave me and the people with me great comfort. The QSOs that I made on these trips was part of the fun. 73, Ty, W1TF, K1 #1423, K3 #696 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Got into ECN on both 40 and 20 almost every time I tried. Very pleased with the K1. Then moved and have to start all over again. I have the 4 band board. Built it for 40, 30, 20, 17M. RE: Re: [Elecraft] Elecraft Antennas in trees
The ARRL Antenna Book suggests using a pulley and counter weight to allow for the varying distances between trees caused by wind. At my former QTH, Ellijay GA, I noticed that in very gusty conditions sometimes the support trees moved in opposite directions at the same time. I decided to make my counterweight out of an eight foot length of 5/16" chain. Put about a third of the length of the chain on the ground during no wind conditions. Now as the wind moves the trees more of less of the chain gets lifted off the ground. This gives a gradual increment in the weight of the counterweight. The antenna that I had up was 88' of #18 insulatd wire up 40', center fed with 450 Ohm line. With this antenna I got into ECN on 40 and 20 using the K1 just about every time I tried. (Kevin, wish I could find a place for this type of antenna where I now live.) I was concerned about the sudden change of weight caused by a solid one piece weight hitting the ground or lifted off the ground. With one third of the chain on the ground the weight does not swing in the breeze. 73, Ty, W1TF, K1 #1423, K3 #696 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] OT: K3 and antenna questions
Dave, W8FGU: Your questions are most appropriate, Elecraft and Amamteur Radio related. Dave wrote: Now my questions: 1 - with my antenna setup tuned with the KAT3, knowing that we were both at 5 watts, is it possible for the antenna to be more efficient at receiving than transmitting? If there are transmission losses in the balun, would there not be reciprocated losses on the receive side? - I doubt that 5 watts would heat it much, was it in the sun? That could heat it also. I have been getting interested in NVIS antennas and propagaton. This make me realize that low angles are not always the best for the desired communicatin. Both our our antennas on those frequencies should have max raidation at 90°. >From the ARRL antenna book and other sources I made a chart of radiation angle >and distance covered. angle miles 80 50 72 100 63 150 56 200 49 250 42 350 29 500 Of course this also depends on the height of the refracting layer. You never said how far the other station was. I just made (noon here) a QSO from near Atlanta GA to a station near Miami FL. 600 miles. On 30 M, we gave each other 339 reports. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Elecraft K1 as my first HF rig??
Jeremy wrote: I've been looking around for a few weeks now for my first HF radio (just recently newly licensed as a General) - and am looking at either something like a Yaesu FT-101, or a Kenwood TS-820S or an Elecraft K1 (probably just the 2-band 20m/40m version). Jeremy: I was not active for may years. To get back on HF I bought the K1 4 band version with ATU, in 2003. I also bought the noise blanker. I first set up the VFO for 75 KHz Later I changed to to 150 KHz to get more coverage on 40 M. I enjoyed the greater coverage but the VFO tuned too fast. I changed it back to 75 KHz. The Noise blanker is not very good, I seldom use it. The ATU works very well. On the 4 band K1 you have a choice of setting up for 17M or 15M. I put in the 17M parts and had several QSOs on that band. Lately I changed to 15 M. Have not had a QSO on that band yet. Get up a good antenna. I had an 88' dipole up about 35'. I was amazed at the ease of making QSOs on 40, 30, 20 meters with that antenna. I also have the BL-2. I fed the antenna with ladder line. It took me about 20 hours to build the K1. Just follow the instructions and do the build over a few days. I just got a K3. I still plan to use the K1 to completed WAS. Some info on my K1 at http://tyrrell.us/amateur/ Good luck. 73, Ty, W1TF K1 # 1423, K3 #696 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] Recommendations for VFO Range on K-1
Jon: I used my K1 using 80 KHz for a few years and then wanted to work higher in the bands so I changed it to 150 KHz. I enjoyed a few QSOs between 7100 and 7145 KHz. After a few weeks I went back to 80 KHz. It just tunes too fast. Most of my QSOs were made between 7025 and 7065 on 40M 30M is a good band also. 20M is also good between 14025 and 14065 KHz I made a few QSOs on 17M. Since I have changed the 17M to 15M I have heard a few sigs there but not QSO. I have K1 # 1423 since 2003. I had it set up for 40, 30, 20 and 17 M. With a 88' dipole at 35' , fed with ladder line. This is a great rig, I will continue to use and enjoy it. I am waiting for my K3. I want more bands and SSB. IMO, there is some degree of owner responsibility if you want to keep your radio "up to date." Elecraft does provide some hints. You can always just randomly stop by the UPDATE page and check. http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_software.htm You can set up your K3 Utility to check automatically (every six hours!) You can visit the Application Notes page: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_app_notes.htm You can visit the Operating Tips page: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/k3_operating_tips.htm Beyond what is provided by Elecraft, you can filter the reflector for only memos from Eric, Wayne, Lyle, etc. Or...you can simply be happy with "your version" and never check again (as is the case with nearly all non-USA radios out there). [Elecraft] MOJO
The readers of this reflector, at least the Elecraft owners, have observed and felt the Mojo feeling. This has been documented many times on this reflector. Where is the Mojo in these radios? Hardware is hardware. The careful selection of hardware and how it is put together, at least for me does not explain the Mojo. I have a K1, #1423, and have felt the Mojo many times. From my Georgia QTH to Oregon to get into ECN, Kevin once remarked that he heard me by ESP and that Wayne was working on a better ESP filter. That to me comfirms that Mojo it tweakable. 300 MW to work VP6DX shows that the K3 Mojo it still there. My theory is that Mojo it must be in the software. The K1, KX1 and K2 have "fixed" Mojo, not easy to upgrade. I am waiting for a K3, ordered in October. I am begining to worry about the K3 Mojo. So many wish lists and changes to the software. Is the file length of K3 upgrades getting longer and longer? Will the K3 memory hold all these wish list items? At some point will the upgrades overwrite the original Mojo that is hidden in the memory and then some of it will be lost? Concerned in the waiting queue. 73, Ty, W1TF Looking for last minute shopping deals? Find them fast with Yahoo! [Elecraft] 40 M interference
7040 KHz is one place for me to find new states or rag chews. Have noticed racket there sometimes. Tuned across the band and found this racket about every 10.66 KHz across all I can tune of 40 M (6998 - 7084) with my K1. 7040.6 KHz is the center of one signal. Seems to be about 1 KHz wide. Not there all the time. I do not hear it on 30 M. Does anyone know where this comes from and what it might be for and how often it is on? [Elecraft] Anetnna Analyzer
I have had an Autek Research RF1 for many years and been pleased with it. I do wish the on/off switch was such that it could not be turned on by accident. I solved that by cutting a thin piece of wood with holes for the switches and attached it to the unit with a rubber band. Fits in pocket and easy on batteries. I have been thinking of getting the VA1. Seems that there have not been very many comments about Autek Research units on this thread. 73, Ty, W1TF K1 # 1423, BL2 Need Mail bonding? Go to the Yahoo! When I built my K1 I built it for 150 KHz tuning. I wanted more band coverage. It tuned too fast. So I changed it to about 100 KHz. And now I have it set to the "STRONGLY ADVISED" setting. Re: [Elecraft] Problems aligning my K1 with ATU - help.
Keith: With in the past week I also did the re-alighment in my K1. I also found the following: K1 errata F-2.pdf (in part says) § A small jumper block has been added for selecting the source voltage for the RF detector (RF board or KAT1 antenna tuner). This will make it easier to install or remove the KAT1 option and align new Filter boards. Previously, R36 on the RF board had to be desoldered whenever the tuner was installed. So I solderd R36 in place, and left it that way. I did not fully mount the filter board during alignment and had no problems. 73, Ty, W1TF, K1 # 1423 --- "Darwin, Keith" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > I tried to align my K1-4 last night. Rick: I have K1 #1423 which I build 3 years ago. I first went with the 150 KHz tuning, it was way to touchy and I changed it to 80 KHz. Lately I have wanted to work just above 7.1 MHz and I opened up the K1 and put a silver mica 22 pfd in parallel with C2. I put it on top of the board. I now get up to 7118 KHz and an finding quite a bit of CW above 7.1. The K1 is my only HF rig. A K2 sure would be nice. 73, Ty, W1TF Rick wrote . . . [Elecraft] Open Wire Feed Line Arrestor Conclusion
Thanks to AC7AC, F5LCI, GM4ESD, K5VH, N2WN, W6FB, WB1DOG. For their comments on and off the reflector. I have changed my antenna from about 6 m of wire draped inside over a window frame and ground being the ground in an AC outlet, to an 26.8 m wire at 12 m high, center fed with 450 Ohm line. What a difference! Eznec says I have picked up about 12 dBi to the northwest. I usually now contact WD5ONS directly instead of having someone check me into ECN. The antenna is supported between two trees, with pully and weight for windy day allowance. The center is about 12 m above ground. The feedline comes to ground and then to a spark gap lightining arrestor mounted on an 8' ground rod. Then the feedline goes arond the cornor of the house to the ICE arrestor mountd on another ground rod, then into the outside junction box. Inside I have a knife switch that takes the feedline to the K1 or to ground. All ground rods have been connected together with nr 6 wire and also connected to the power company ground rod. The wife even let me put some holes in the wall for the feed lines. Junction box outside and another one inside so that future ideas of antennas can be implemented easily. With the new antenna I have worked W0CZ for ND and a random QSO with UT. AK and HI should not be to far away and I will make WAS, as soon as the QSL cards arrive. Getting on the air is so much more enjoyable with a good antenna. I even call CQ and get replies now (sometimes). Thanks Elecraft and the reflector for bringing me all the ideas that I could put together to make this work. 73, Ty, W1TF, GA K1 (4 band) - 1423 and BL2 __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [Elecraft] Open Wire Feed Line Arrestor
Still running my K1 (#1423) on inefficient low antennas. I have some trees that will give me good height 50-60' and orient the main lobe of a double extended zepp (14MHz) toward Oregon, take notice ECN. I have come across a device that will keep the antenna at near DC ground at all times. http://www.arraysolutions.com/Products/ice/impulse1.html go down to "Open Wire Arrestor", Model 309 "All units use torroidal inductors and present near dead DC short on antenna side of arrestor, constantly draining feedline wires of static and any developed voltage potential feedthrough breakdown voltage from input ports to output ports 4,000 to 6,000 volts. Arrestor units may be placed anywhere in the feedline at ground level without serious change in tuning, but small change may be detectable due "to small" increase in total feedline length caused by size of arrestor case & circuit." Just wondering if anyone else has used this or a similar item and what comments might be made. Just trying to be save from lightning. I would also put a DPDT knife switch between the feed line and the K1 with BL2 to ground the feed line when not in use. Thanks all. 73, W1TF, Ty in GA __ Yahoo! DSL Something to write home about. [Elecraft] K1 and antenna
I had been using a 24' piece of wire inside and connecting what should be the counterpoise to the ground in an ac outlet. Of course not the best way to do it. But in two years I have worked 44 states and a few VE stations. Gotten into Europe several times. Eznec tells me that my piece of wire provides mostly high angle radiation on all bands (40,30,20,17 M). I have come up with an antenna idea (thanks K5RP) a one turn loop, 7.6 M horizontal and 2 M vertical fed at the center of a vertical side. Eznec shows low angle (~20°) radiation on all bands. Top wire is 3 M high. It is getting out well on all bands but the KAT1 matching range is limited, SWR on 40 is 3.4:1, other bands are just fine. I want to try some other versions of this antenna. Looking for a Z-match tuner (maybe HFPACKER) to help out. Is Elecraft coming out with something like this? For now the K1 is my only on the air rig. I do not want a QRP only tuner, maybe some day I will get a K2-100. Any Ideas? Ty, W1TF, GA, K1 #1423, 4 W __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! [Elecraft] CW in Emergencies?
reflection on Rons comments. I was OX5BT for 2 1/2 years. Mostly used CW due to the frequent arctic flutter making SSB unintelligible. I remember a CW qso that I was having on 20M, we were going along about 20 WPM when the flutter started. I slowed down, he slowed down, we finished the QSO at less than 10 WPM. The easily variable data rate of CW allowed us to adjust for conditions and complete a very pleasant QSO. I made WAS from Thule, I wanted it to be all CW but the CW ops in KH6 that I did work did not send me a QSL card. Thanks to the SSB QSO with a KH6 I got my 50th QSL card and obtained a mixed mode WAS . Thanks to Kevin, KD5ONS and the ECN for CW activity. I also get into the QPR sprints, http://www.arsqrp.com/ and http://www.arm-tek.net/~yoel/sprint200509.html and others. There is CW out there but sometimes the activity does seem sparse. 73, TY. I enjoy the wide pass band of the K1 for most QSOs but the narrow xtal filter does come in handy often. My antenna? piece of wire, 15', in the room on the ground floor. Ground is the AC outlet ground. Gut on the air in October and now have 43 states worked 36 states QSLed. The K1 ATU is great. Have some tall trees on this lot that I hope to put up a double extended Zepp for 20M and use it on the lower bands also.
