[Elecraft] K3 tuner
If you are using the KAT3 tuner, then you are too close to the 8215khz IF Trap mounted on the KAT3 tuner. Years ago the original traps were burning up and Elecraft replaced them with a new trap that could be tuned. That did not completely solve the problem, so Elecraft suggested shorting out the trap or removing it completely and jumper the board. [Elecraft] KPA1500 LOW GAIN FAULT
Tightening inside PL259's with pliers is not desirable, because each Hams definition of "SNUG" occurs at different Torque levels. I want to use my hands to screw them on and off. Also, when you have SO239 chassis mounted "Round" connectors (using one large lock washer), then pliers will loosen them every time. What I do is, treat each connector center pin and threads with Caig DeOxit. I do this on all connectors. Now I can put them on and off by hand and there is no Oxidation causing High Impedance RF connections. I do the same on my outside connectors BUT I do also apply 2 inch lbs. of torque. This keeps them from working loose with vibration and prevents oxidation. [Elecraft] KPA1500 v. 2.10
I am seeing the same thing with the DIGITAL power metering. My LED bar graphs are working perfectly. It seems like the digital metering is not triggering correctly or not delaying correctly. The digital metering is acting very erratically on SSB and CW. It works perfectly on a Tune Carrier. My new KPA-1500 serial number 00259 arrived UPS about 2pm. It was ordered on February 29. I disassembled it and put Caig DeOxit on all the cable connector pins. It tested excellent on the service bench. It is in line now on my K3S and working well. It is beautifully built. Same size box as the KPA500, with the internal switching supply. It could actually weigh less than the KPA500. This would be an achievement that would be unique to Elecraft and desirable. The tuner would be in an external box, same width and depth as the amp. If it could be done for twice the price ($4200) of the KPA500, it would have some market. PROBLEM SOLVED. Received from Elecraft today a new front panel board; installed it and all is working normal again. The new board arrive just under 48 hrs. from when it was requested, traveling from CA to Waxhaw NC. Unbelievable service from Elecraft and USPS. I will send the bad board back to Elecraft Monday. After talking with Elecraft technical support, I learned that common causes for this problem are poor solder connections on the LCD Driver IC or the LCD itself. Elecraft is sending me a new Display board under Warranty Exchange. At times like these it is reassuring to have such good technical support from Elecraft. Has been working perfectly for almost 3 months. The backlight is working ok but no display digits at all. The rest to of the radio is all working normally. Parameter Initialization made no change. Tomorrow I plan to remove the front panel and check all the connector pins. Has anyone had this same problem? [Elecraft] 10 MHz Reference Oscillator
These OCXOs are less than 2" cube in size and available on e-Bay from several dealers. They cost about $30. Search for: MORION MV89A. My date is 08/18. This is a 2008 year unit. My unit is hermetically sealed with NO adjustment available. It is a double oven model, made in St Petersburg. It is very accurate up to 10 to the -9 or better. More than enough accuracy for a K3. I AM USING A MORION MV89A directly into my K3. It runs on 12v and has fantastic accuracy for the K3. It is basically on Frequency from cold start to as warm as you use it. You never have to adjust your reference oscillator in the K3 again. My MV89A runs on 12v continuously. It is not practical, or advisable to turn it off and on with the K3. From a cold turn on the MV89A will take up to 40 minutes to get up on, or close to, frequency. The Trimble Thunderbolt is the best option and the most accurate, for a service bench environment. I have one running on my service bench. [Elecraft] P3TXMON Bug?
My P3TXMON scope display is not performing as it should, while I am talking in SSB mode. Frequently the display will go to a straight line with vertical signals that are very narrow. It looks almost like it is switching to a very wide span or the time base is changing frequency. This will continue until I stop transmitting, then it will be ok for a while, then does it again. A friend is also experiencing this same bug on his P3TXMON. Anyone experiencing this same thing? [Elecraft] New K3 Synthesizer
I have installed two new KSYN3AUPG boards in my K3. They are working perfectly. This Synthesizer is an excellent re-design and is a welcome upgrade to the K3. No Tuning or Calibration is now needed for the new Synthesizers. The Noise Floor is lower and the Receiver sounds quieter and cleaner. The Receiver Dynamic range has been improved. The close in performance numbers have improved for the 2kHz spacing. Thanks for a good new upgrade Wayne and Eric. [Elecraft] [K3] need help with hiss on ssb receive
You have (built into the K3), a Receive only, 8 band equalizer. It will allow you to customize the receiver so that it will sound the way you like it. Works great for me. Don't forget that hiss you hear is the normal part of the Excellent Dynamic Range of the K3 Receiver. [Elecraft] KPA500 Heat when powered off
I noticed when I covered my KPA500 with a towel, the next morning It feels slightly warm on the bottom and top over the Transformer. I thought that was curious since it had been off all night. I turned the power switch off on the rear panel and the heat went totally away. I wondered if there are circuits running even with the front panel power switch off. I checked the schematics and T3; BRIDGE; U2; U1; U4; and other circuits are live with the front panel power switch off. This is normal and to be expected given the design. I have concluded that the switch on the rear panel is important for removing power totally from the KPA500. The K3 # 3430 build went well and the K3 is on the air tonight. This is the 3rd K3 I have assembled and It was again a pleasure to build. The fit of all the hardware is still impressive. The ERR messages are very helpful and always point to the correct action needed. The K3 is still a pleasure to use. I can't wait for the P3. [Elecraft] K3 drift
After 9 months of ageing my K3 # 604, I ran a cold to hot Reference Oscillator Test. My Reference Oscillator is the Optional 1ppm Temp Compensated Crystal Oscillator (KTCXO3-1). This TCXO came with a Factory calibration data sheet which shows frequency verses temperature over a wide range. My Ambient Room Temperature was 72 deg F up to 74 deg F. At turn on (cold) the Reference was adjusted to WWV (15Mhz) and it measured: 49,379,924 Mhz. After 5 min it measured: 49,379,925 Mhz. After 10 min it measured: 49,379,925 Mhz. After 15 min it measured: 49,379,926 Mhz. After 20 min it measured 49,379,928 Mhz. That is an 4Hz shift up in Reference frequency. For the next 14 hours it measured: 49,379,928 Mhz. It looks like it will stay there as long as the Ambient Room Temperature remains near 74 deg F. This is Very impressive and will (can you believe it) get even better when Elecraft enables the 1ppm TCXO Option in Firm Ware. This will (for all practical purposes) eliminate the errors due to temperature changes. The more I use my K3 and the more I learn about it the more I like it. Thanks for your excellent trouble shooting and solution Roy. I installed a rubber grommet in each speaker mounting hole. This isolates the speaker from its mounting hardware and the top panel. Now it is a pleasure listening to the internal speaker with NR on or OFF. [Elecraft] K3 Band switch
I have programmed the keypad as band switches and programmed M1-M4 on each band. I have also programmed frequencies into my memory locations. This works well but takes some getting used to. The keypad and keys around it are now the most "Busy" area on my front panel. I don't know what to think about The Band Switch nor how to use it. Maybe I should think of it not as a Band Switch but as a frequency Stacking register. Any frequency can be put into any stacked position. Maybe I should put my commercial broadcast and short wave frequencies in these stacks. This would free up more memory locations. I am sure Elecraft is re-thinking the total frequency management scheme to see if it can be made more intuitive for us all. I really like my K3. It is neat to have the flexibility that downloaded firmware provides. [Elecraft] K3, assembly, use of DeoxIT Gold
I highly recommend Caig Products. I built my K3 #604 using Caig DeoxIT ProGold. I used the small plastic tube and slid it over each male pin, completely coating each pin. This provides some lubrication for each pin allowing easier insertion and removal. This eliminates oxidation of the pins. This keeps the contact resistance low. It's a good thing. [Elecraft] power troubles
Todd, I had the exact same problem when I tried to use my K3 with my amplifier. I did not have a ground on the K3. This was a test in a high RF environment. When I grounded the K3 the problem disappeared. When I grounded the power supply the problem disappeared. I now have both grounded.
