I'm not sure what you're asking but I'll give you an answer anyway. It may not have been entirely clear what Gene and I saw on our P3 that turned out to be a problem fixed by a different BNC cable. On my P3 the BNC connector problem caused signals to be presented on the P3 display that could not have been present at the antenna. The P3 showed two bands of increased noise floor that were each roughly 38 kHz wide. One was 62 kHz above center freq and the other was 62 kHz below center freq. These noise bands were always present, regardless of operating band or center freq, with the same width and at the same distance from the center freq. If you're seeing signals invariant of the center freq then try a different BNC cable. If that doesn't help take a close look at the BNC receptacle on the P3 to see if it is damaged. I had the same problem. Replacing the BNC coax cable (between the P3 and K3) with one I had lying around fixed it. Howard at Elecraft tech support then sent a new cable that arrived 36 hours after I talked to him. This new cable from Elecraft worked fine, for a while, but then started having the same kinds of problems. I put my old cable that I had lying around back on and it's worked for several months now. I haven't pursued getting a second replacement from Elecraft because it hardly seems worthwhile. In addition, it's not 100% clear to me that the problem is the cable. With the 2 Elecraft cables I've noticed some difficulty in connecting the BNC plug to the BNC receptacle on the back of the P3. Not so with my old cable. The supposition being that the physical dimensions of BNC receptacle on the P3 aren't quite right. Whereas the new cables have a problem fitting, my old cable may be worn enough that it fits anyway. I took a close look and the BNC on the P3 and the center conductor either was faulty to begin with or was damaged by the male BNC being misaligned. My old cable still fits without any difficulty. I'm supposing that, although it's not certain, it's likely that this caused the hash seen on the P3. Anyway, Howard at Elecraft is sending a replacement board that has the damaged BNC receptacle. I also had the problem with DM780 freezing the machine. Actually, the problem was traced to the serial/USB interface that I was using. Specifically, the Proset chip set was used in that interface, which is known to have problems. I switched to a serial/USB interface based on the FTDI chip set and haven't had a problem since. While working peacekeeping forces in the Army i watched a friend of mine become a rare one. with a very limited time frame he worked over 95 POLITE contact's and totally ignored 12 USA power station's who just knew with their power they had the right to jump ahead. [Elecraft] K3 ERR TXG
I have installed my Xmas present the KPA3 into K3 36 All seems to be OK apart from an error message, ERR TXG on the 30m band only. Other bands seem OK and acting as should. When trying to transmit into a dummy load 50Ohm I get no power out and hear a 200Hz or so whine coming from the rig. The manual says that usually indicates a problem with band-pass foilter alignment or one of the low pass filters. See Service manual. Anyone any ideas please. Thanks to those people who replied to me off list with regard to the ERR TXG problem Having checked out my dummy load and all connections to the K3 I could find no problem. Trying to set the TX config for the PA was OK on all bands apart from 10MHz When going back to receive the 10Mhz band sounded odd, no cw sations heard that were there prior to testing, changing bands down to 7Mhz and then back to 10Mhz restorednormal recieve with CW staions audible. Again trying to check for 50W out the rig would then show a varying output and the SWR varying. Recieve again was odd. The main tuning seemed to vary the frequency but what that frequency was I dont know. I should have checked with the signal generator in retrospect. I decided to re do Cal Syn and since doing this the rig seems to be working as described with no problems on 10Mhz receive or transmit. Thanks to those who replied to my request for help. Hi Ron . No I did not have any synthesiser error messages at any stage. I thought that may have gone out of lock as tuning the main dial alterd the background noises but not that much ie tuning seemed slower than expected. [Elecraft] softrock with K3
Hi Dave. There is a Softrock kit specific for the K3 which includes a xtal at 32.7680Mhz, approx 4 times the K3 IF. The Kit is not expensive around $15 US. I have one here but with so many jobs I have not yet the time to get it up and running. Hi Roy The filter placement looks fine . However you do not bypass the filter slots per se Go to page 44 in the owners manual Revision A3, yours may be a different version Follow the Filter bandwidth Setup and subsequent paragraphs to ENABLE the filters you have installed for both receive and transmit. [Elecraft] K3 Scan not allowed on this band
I tried last night to set up scanning on the 50Mhz band on the K3. However when holding FREQ ENT to start the scan I get the message SCAN NOT ALLOWED ON THIS BAND. Scanning on 28Mhz seems enabled and works well. I wonder if this is due to U.S. regulations for some reason? Or am I doing something wrong , I dont think so, 28Mhz seems fine. Do any of the other K3 users on the list know if this is correct? [Elecraft] K3 #36 Up and Running
Well I managed to get the K3 up and running last night. Passesd all tests first time. The build took me around 8 hours but I did not hurry. I think its a must to sort out the hardware into containers, not only does this aid assembly time it reduces the risk of errors. I invested in an ESD mat for this build I thought it was about time... Im sure I destroyed an ADC when building my K2 some years ago Im sure this was due to static. I was a little concerned after installation of the Noise blanker board as it did not sit level to the RF board. I thought that the standoff I had installed was a little short. Measuring it it was correct as per the manual . Removing the board got me a little worried as there appeared to be a pin missing from J77and the hole in the socket was filled! I thought that somehow the pin had broken off. Phone call to Elecraft Tech Help releived my worries here. Not all the pins are present and used on a lot of the connectors of the boards in the kit. The reason it was not sitting as it should non the sscoket was that the unused pin had been cut and left a little long. Filing this down cured the problem. The siting of the front panel board on the panel itself took me 45 mins I think I was a little timid it did not seem to want to go all the way at the mic socket end. the LEDS were lining up OK but after a while it just slipped into place everything looking perfect. It is a tight fit but then it has to be. Be patient here! The three TMP cables connecting the KREF3/RF BOARD/ KSYN3 boards were diffficult to insert in their respective sockets mine were a very tight fit 1 cable had been crimped over the plug end itself but I managed to reshape this using pliers and insert it without damage to the cable or the socket. you have to get them perpendicular to get them in easily and applyiny an even pressure It was an enjoyable build to see those boards coming together but I have to admit not nearly as enjoyable as the K2/ K1. Anderson POWERPOLE CONNECTORS SOLDERED The smell of flux, that brings back memories. Power up! This worried me hiss from the speakers. Antenna connected. No signals. Dont be alarmed you have to get into the menu system and set the filters per mode this brought things to life. The audio sounds suberb... CW and SSB. I have the 2.7Khz SSB and 400Hz CW filters. Updated the software today using a serial cable. Took a few minutes, no problems. Im not going to get much time if any to play today but from impressions so far this rig oozes quality from the received audio point of view. A quick play with the DSP on SSB signals last night was impressive you will see what I mean when yours arrives. Thats it so far. Worth the wait? Certainly looks like it. I have now opened the box and I have to admit I can not get the numerous antistatic/ ESD bags the way they were. The packing technique must have taken some time to perfect! With all the talk of serial numbers I would willing topay a little extra to have the K3 Serial number show up on the displayat start up. I could identify my other Elecraft rigs easily on opening them up but in the case of the K3 I think the inners will all look the same. Thanks for the comments guys regarding the 808 (China) I have decided to give it a go and have ordered direct from China!!! It will be interesting to see what the quality is likeand how well it performs I have some PCB boards here to reclaim components from. I will report back to the list when it arrives. The type I have ordered does look similar to the Circuit Specialist desoldering tool on their site. there appears to be a number of versions on the market all coming from China. I have been looking around for a desoldering tool for some time. The Hakko 808 would be ideal but the prices over here in the UK are around £200.
